Historical place
Château Comtal is a large 12th-century hilltop castle located in the medieval walled city of Carcassonne. It was the seat of the Trencavel family, Viscounts of Carcassonne, before being annexed by France in the 13th century. The castle now houses a museum where visitors can delve into the city's fascinating history.
It’s worth taking the tour of the chateaux and the walls - so rare to be able to get to see such a a structure fully intact. Be prepared because the walk around the walls is probably an hour in length and it’s quite a bit of climbing.
Cat C — Google review
Absolutely superb castle and linked walk around the ramparts of the medieval city. Worth paying a little extra for the headphones to give more details than the info boards which are in French, English and Spanish. There is a kiosk and toilets in the courtyard so we took a break halfway round after the various levels of the Castle but before the walls.

Visiting here was an experience with zero regrets, entering the city immerses you in a medieval setting. Came here during the 25th anniversary of the Carcassonne board game for a weekend and had the best time. Highly recommend visiting the city and exploring it for yourself, don’t forget to try cassoulet!
Shukh — Google review
This is the most extraordinary medieval world city. It has a UNESCO world heritage listing and has been restored to a very high level of quality. Your €13 entry fee gives you access into the Palace and also the ramparts. The construction of this protective wall and the buildings with in it is astounding. The walk on the ramp parts takes about an hour, and there are quite a few steps up and down to get to experience levels. There are also a few levels in the palace, but there are plenty of rest stops along the way. Be sure and have your camera and take your time as there is so many beautiful pictures to be had of the ancient city, but also Carcassonne and the surrounding countryside. On a beautiful day, the views are astonishing. This is a highly recommended to her to take. There are also audio guides and you can also get your own tour guide but wander around by yourself is wonderful.

New and improved features: 👉I highly recommend the new automated headset 4€, with lots of historical facts... remember to take your ID or driving licence as a security deposit. 👉You can walk 3km along the finished ramparts... the views are stunning. 👉Braille information 👉Kids Room with books & activities 👉Illuminated model of the city 👉Monitors with information 👉Refreshments in the courtyard Our students and our guests enjoy the Château Comptal with the history of the Cathars. Don't forget to visit the Cathedral and go and find the Medieval Trades & Crafts!

Wow! Takes your breath away just wandering around the place trying to imagine it several hundred years ago. It's spectacular, really. I'd have it on par with Windsor Castle in my list of top Castles to visit.

Go early for less crowds and heat. Can explore on your own and don’t need to purchase the tickets. Once on the grounds there are a number of shops and restaurant options for lunch.

The Canal du Midi is a 240-kilometer waterway that stretches from Toulouse to the Etang de Thau, featuring 63 locks and 350 engineering structures. Travelers can enjoy tranquil journeys by cycling along the old towpaths or leisurely cruising on a barge, taking in the picturesque French landscapes of lush fields and charming villages.
Great route for cycling, Bordeaux to Narbonne ( jumps about a bit in places but not difficult to get back on track). Shady for much of the route and flat throughout, taking in beautiful towns and countryside.
Gavin M — Google review
Canal Du Midi from Toulouse to Narbonne. By bike September 2019 This is a great experience and very physical intensive.but a lot of joy and a good way to strengthen your body. The first step from Toulouse to Castelnaudary it's quiet relaxed and the path on the side of Canal du Midi make it easy to get along. But you always hear the high way where the cars making there own sound but still you feel happy peddling along the old Allees beside the water. The following route to Carcassonne needed more Intension for the path it was paved with little stones, occasionally some roots and wholes make it difficult to bike fast. The third part till Narbonne was even more difficult and because of some tree disease they had to cut almost all the old trees and planted new once but this couldn't give you an enjoyable feeling. The good part was that the high way was to fare away to hear. Nevertheless the people you meet on the Canal Du Midi in Bike, Hiking or on a Boot are always very friendly and all in all take as much time you can to be able to explore the villages on the Canal try the good food and the great wine they produce in the area and look out that you have always enough water with you.
Friedbert R — Google review
The quiet tree shaded bicycle path along the canal is a dream for cyclists.
Seimen B — Google review
Picturesque, slow pace, towns adjoining, a very French experience. We enjoyed our stay, 10 days was too brief even with two days before and after in central Toulouse, 14 total.
Jim H — Google review
I preferred the section away from the road. The staircase lock we passed was interesting. The locks are big as the vessels passing through are also a fair size. The canal is perhaps a little over 10m wide.
Gary K — Google review
I expected some slightly better surfaces. Most of it was quite poor, with potholes, rough large gravels and tree roots. It's also badly signposted in places. Don't try it with normal road tyres. Most people were on electric bikes with fat tyres. I won't be back.
Boberto J — Google review
A bucket list exsperience and must do. Relaxing holiday by selfdriven boat while enjoying southern France's vinos and old villages.

Keep in mind the canal is not a single point on the map, the pin took me somewhere random that wasn’t that pretty

Cité de Carcassonne is a historic citadel with a rich history dating back to Gallo-Roman times. This UNESCO World Heritage site is renowned for its impressive double outer walls stretching over 3 kilometers and adorned with 52 defensive towers. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes from the inner ramparts.
Very beautiful Medieval Castle with very charming narrow roads. Highly recommend the guided audio tour which is super convenient to navigate as it starts automatically every time you enter a new area. Once you walk the ramparts I recommend to walk also the full round back to the main castle it is worth it.
Adrian R — Google review
An absolute highlight. The castle town is like in every childrenbook. Wouldn't be surprised, if a dragon arrives🙂. It is really like in a tale. All the towers with the roofs and the big large walls. A walk along the wall is more than 3km and take about 1 hour. Its included in the castle entrance. The cite can be freely visited all time. The castle is separate and has normal ooening hours. Entrance is 19€. But its worth it. You get a lot infos on boards with drawings about defense systems and reconstruction of the site. The cite is full of shops, bars and restaurants. An cathedral can also be visited. I recommand 2 visits. One fir castle and wall. Other in the evening for diner.

This is an amazing place to visit, lots to see. I would encourage anyone going to visit the castle and get the audio guide. So much information to listen to, both in the castle and and as you walk the walls. It really explains the history and development of the place. There's far less info on the few signs dotted about. Lots of places to eat and buy souveineers in the city and so many things to photograph.
Karl T — Google review
A really cool place to visit in the fall when the tourists are gone. I walked around at my leisure then took the Privilege tour which takes us in basements and other restricted areas to learn more about the history of the place. It was worth it. The only mild disappointment was the restaurants. I nearly cried when I realized that I can make a better cassoulet than what I had been served. I love cassoulet and was hoping to have an out of body experience in the birthplace of this dish. It was ok but not mind-blowing... If you like jogging, there's a nice trail around the walls where I enjoyed gorgeous views. In shoer, great place to visit but eat in town if you want to experience gastronomy.
Pascal B — Google review
Wonderful"village" inside the walls, free to enter, not too busy and very historic, full of food outlets, and seemed to be reasonably priced. Beware if cycling up and leaving bikes outside, we parked and there was a cut lock on the cycle stand, when we came back another couple returned and they had had their bikes stolen, seemingly a few minutes before we arrived, so ensure you have a very secure lock.
Tony K — Google review
A lovely medieval town surrounded by well preserved ramparts with a wonderful view of the city and countryside.a magnificent amphitheatre and beautiful manicured gardensz The castle is so interesting and the tour is well worth doing. Lots of restaurants, souvenir shops and cafes within the walls.
Frances R — Google review
The best medieval city ever. It's a must place to visit. You'll not be disappointed. Worth the entrance fee into the castle. There's plenty of parking too

Pont Vieux, also known as the Old Bridge, is a historic 210-meter-long structure dating back to 1359. It replaced an older feudal bridge and served as the sole connection between two parts of the city for centuries. Now strictly for pedestrians, it is considered one of the most romantic spots in Carcassonne. The bridge offers breathtaking views of landmarks such as the Barbie Palace and Sainte-Cecile Cathedral.
One of the best old bridges I’ve ever been on or seen. Amazing views from the bridge over the canal. Even better to view the bridge from the newer bridge a few meters away. Classic looking bridge.
Leaburn — Google review
A beautiful 14th-century structure, reserved for pedestrians, which spans the River Aude to bring walkers to the foot of the medieval city, in Rue Trivalle. It is a wonderful observation post on the city and the surrounding mountains, the Pic de Nore on one side, the Pyrenean foothills on the other. You can picnic on the lawns of the garden dedicated to Pierre and Maria Sire, two authors from Aude, and take the children to have fun in the fenced playground.

A stunning introduction to the medieval city is this bridge from the 14th century. Up until n the 19th century, it was the only access from the Bastide, these days pedestrian bridge giving a scenic entrance to the Medieval City.

Basilique Saint Nazaire is a stunning 12th-century church in Carcassonne, featuring a mix of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. The facade boasts a vibrant rose window, while the interior showcases exquisite stained glass and impressive stone carvings. The city of Carcassonne also includes other attractions like Le Musee International du Dessin Anime and Le Pont Vieux, offering breathtaking views of the illuminated citadel at night.
A must-see when visiting the medieval cité of Carcassonne! The Basilica Saint-Nazaire is an absolute gem, rich in history and stunning architecture. You can literally see the transition from Romanesque to Gothic styles as you walk through—especially in the roof and arches, where the heavy, rounded Romanesque stonework gives way to soaring Gothic vaults and stained glass windows. The light through the centuries-old glass is breathtaking, and the detail in the stone carvings is incredible. It’s peaceful, beautifully preserved, and full of character. Don’t skip this historic beauty!
Jordan L — Google review
Visited early in the morning, and it was the quietest moment of the day, which made the church feel especially solemn and sacred. The calm atmosphere truly allows you to appreciate its historical and spiritual presence. The stained-glass windows are exceptionally large and absolutely beautiful, casting soft light throughout the interior. The combination of Romanesque and Gothic elements gives the basilica a unique and striking character. A must-visit while in Carcassonne’s old city. Take your time to walk through and admire the details – it’s a peaceful and awe-inspiring experience.
The Y — Google review
A beautiful church in the medieval world city Carcassonne. As you enter, there are many signs in different languages requesting total silence, which is wonderful as many churches in Europe are cursed with chattering tourists, making a solemn visit difficult. As this is primarily a place of worship people were very respectful and there were quite a few people in solemn contemplation and prayer in the church. The architecture is beautiful the stained glass windows, amazing, and the spaces light and airy. A wonderful place to visit for some quiet contemplation and appreciation of this beautiful ancient structure.
G M — Google review
A beautiful basilica across from the Hôtel de la Cité Carcassonne. Gorgeous architecture and stained glass windows. Free entry. A wonderful, quiet place to stop in and enjoy.

The Gothic-Romanesque basilica of Saint Nazarius and Celsus has stunning stained-glass windows, one of which is one of the oldest in the south of France. Churches & Cathedrals
Église Saint-Vincent de Carcassonne is often mistaken for the town's cathedral due to its size and grandeur. The church features a 54-meter tall bell tower dating back to the 14th century, along with beautiful stained glass, a gilded ornamented organ, and restored gargoyle features adorning the outside of the nave. Visitors can climb a significant number of steps to reach the top of the tower, where they are rewarded with a panoramic view.
Beautiful church in Carcassonne! Entry is free, and you can pay a few euros extra to climb the tower for a view of the city. The staff are very friendly and helpful but they do close at lunchtime, so plan your visit accordingly!
April W — Google review
Single nave cathedral of Carcassonne doesn't look appealing from outside, maybe in restoration. Entered but didn't get up to the tower. Nice stain glass windows. But very similar to other churches, didn't find anything special about this one
Tomi V — Google review
Lovely church, well worth a visit. The climb to the top of the tower is definitely worth doing. 232 steps for an amazing view of Carcassonne
Michael W — Google review
The tower - I have a fear of heights but love the view when it feels safe. This tower is fine - 262 steps up a solid spiral, then a nice safe feeling viewing platform at the top. Fantastic views, well worthwhile- recommended
Roger P — Google review
Another beautiful cathedral in our tour of Southern France! The stained glass is stunning. There is also beautiful World War I memorial in pink marble. A must see if you like cathedrals and architecture.
Scott S — Google review
The church itself is impressive because of the width of the nave. The stairs to the tower are littered with feathers. The view you get at the top is nice but the viewpoint doesn't justify the price.
Charles V — Google review
A beautiful church, very serene and cool. Some excellent stained glass. The 232 steps up the tower is tough and quite narrow, but the view from the top is sensational
Simon B — Google review

The Torture Museum, nestled within the historic walls of Carcassonne, offers a chilling glimpse into Europe's medieval past. While it may not be suitable for everyone—especially those with a weak stomach—this museum provides an educational experience about the grim realities of torture methods and instruments used during that era. Visitors can delve into the harrowing history of the Cathars, a Christian sect that faced severe persecution from the Catholic Church between the 12th and 14th centuries.

(Translated by Google) I've never been so disappointed with a museum. 12 euros to access the first section, which is on this site, and the other a few streets further. Honestly, saving your money is better. It's a walk for this one, where you can do the whole tour in 10 minutes... 10 minutes. Where you don't learn anything incredible that you don't already know. That the Inquisition tortured, etc., non-believers (or people with other beliefs) or those with "deviations" for the time. The attached images are literally what you'll see of the museum. 🙂 And the man at the reception was anything but pleasant! Honestly, don't do it! The Catholic Church of the Carmelite Order in the city of Agen has a very important historic value, as it was one of the first churches to be built in that region. It consists of a nave 12 meters wide and 17 meters long, with twelve chapels from the nineteenth century still remaining.

(Translated by Google) In restoration, it is damaged due to its great history, it is very interesting and work is being done to restore it. It is beautiful and has impressive stained glass windows. Too bad it has so much to restore. Located on one of the main and most commercial streets, it's worth taking a look when passing by. Free entry, you can help collect capital for its restoration.

When we visited it offered an interesting exhibition of nativity scenes (Original) Iglesia en la Bastida de Carcassone, muy céntrica, pendiente rehabilitación para mejorar su estado. (Translated by Google) Magnificent stained glass windows for this small church which shows the weight of the years, despite everything a note of cheerfulness and hope with the exhibition of the African nativity scene (Original) Des vitraux magnifiques pour cette petite église qui accuse le poids des ans, malgré tout une note de gaité et d'espoir avec l'exposition de la crèche africaine

(Translated by Google) It is under construction, despite which it does not lose its charm. On the door there is a sign asking for collaboration for its restoration. It is evident that he needs a hand to look everything he deserves. (Original) Está en obras, a pesar de lo cual no pierde encanto. En la puerta hay un cartel donde piden colaboración para su restauración. Es evidente que necesita una mano para lucir todo lo que se merece

Saint-Gimer Church is a small historic church located near the old town and the River Aude in Carcassonne. It holds significance as the center of annual May 15th celebrations and is a short walk from the old Cite walls. The church has an interesting history, with tales of Gimer's early entrepreneurial spirit and his miraculous ability to sell his mother's bread without depleting her supply.
Located at the base of the medieval city stands this church, in a very quiet part of town, it appears part of the wall were removed to build it.

Old small church right under the western walls of the Cite de Carcassonne. Very well visible from the Castle Comtal right above in the Cite. Didn't entered.
Tomi V — Google review
Église Saint-Gimer is a charming little church located near the Citadel of Carcassonne. While more modest than other landmarks in the city, it has a peaceful atmosphere and unique character. Built in the 19th century by the renowned architect Viollet-le-Duc — who also restored the medieval citadel — it’s a lovely spot for a quiet visit and a touch of local history.

A short walk from the walls of the old Cité and a stopping point between the old town and the River Aude. Well worth a visit and this used to be the centre of the annual May 15th celebrations. A small information board is situated outside the church. Both photos taken from inner walls of Carcassonne which can only be accessed if you purchase a tour of the citadel. Walking around the outer walls is free.

A small little church sited on the walk towards the castle. Worth a visit as you go past it.
