Nara Park is a picturesque public park featuring ancient temples and the Nara National Museum of art, as well as friendly deer roaming freely. The park offers a variety of attractions including Todaiji, Kasuga Grand Shrine, Kohfukuji, Mt. Wakakusa, Nigatsu-do Temple, Toshodaiji Temple, and more.
🦌 If you're looking for a park where hundreds of wild deer roam free and live harmoniously alongside people, this is the place you absolutely must visit! The experience is incredibly unique. You can purchase special deer crackers (shika senbei) to feed them along the paths. The deer are so integrated into the environment that they often cross the streets right alongside the pedestrians! The most charming part? Some of the clever deer have even learned to bow their heads (a low bow!) as a way to ask for a treat. It's truly heartwarming and hilarious. Be alert and watch your back! These deer are extremely food-motivated and can be a bit cheeky. Make sure you don't keep crackers visible in your pocket, or you might just get a nip on the butt/hip as they try to grab the food from you!
Chanaporn Y — Google review
Magical, Must-Visit Experience (Just Mind the Bucks!) Nara Park is an absolute gem, blending stunning natural beauty with ancient temples. Walking among the 1,200 free-roaming Sika deer is truly magical—they’ll even bow politely for a shika senbei (deer cracker)! Feeding and petting these gentle creatures is the highlight of any trip. A crucial tip: visit on a weekday to take advantage of significantly smaller crowds. This makes the whole experience more serene and enjoyable. Be aware, however, that the male deer (especially in autumn) can be aggressive; always observe warning signs and avoid teasing them with food. Most definately do not be a terrible tourist and let your children climb on deer, they are still wild animals. It's a magical place, let's do our part and keep it that way for many generations. There are plenty of delightful restaurants and street food vendors nearby for a refueling break. This is a five-star, unique Japanese adventure!
Phong ( — Google review
Visiting Nara Park was such a wonderful experience! Interacting with the friendly deer was so much fun. They’re adorable and surprisingly gentle. Just be careful when feeding them, they really like those snacks! The park itself is beautiful, with lots of scenic spots, temples, and peaceful walking paths. It’s the perfect place to relax, take photos, and enjoy nature. Definitely a must-visit if you’re in Nara!
Aaron F — Google review
This was definitely an experience. Deer and deer droppings everywhere haha. Closer to the main road the deer walk real close looking for treats, and if you have them be prepared to get pestered. They do bow as advertised hoping for something in return. If you just want to sit and relax while calmly watching the deer I suggest you go further into the park away from the main area. There are a lot of benches and greenery to enjoy a peaceful rest.
Jonathan L — Google review
Nara was an amazing experience! Feeding the deer and having them walk around me was incredible — truly unforgettable. Don’t miss this opportunity. The park is also beautiful, especially with the temple nearby.
P A — Google review
The park is actually extremely big - of course there are deers everywhere but the nicest parts are the ones far from the deer park and more towards the temples and beyonds. If you just want to see a few deers, it’s feasible in half a day. If you have more time, do take a walk towards and around the popular temples
Bao N — Google review
Beautiful place, but very crowded. Be prepared to walk through the crowd and wait for the best spot for photos. Tip: buy food for the animals to increase your chances of getting good pictures!
Élito S — Google review
Nara Deer Park at sunset is pure magic! The gentle deer roam freely, and interacting with them is a delight. Feeding them biscuits is a must – just be cautious when they don't get their treats, as they can get a bit feisty and might just stump your butts. Worth the visit, but come prepared with snacks for these adorable critters.

Tōdai-ji is a Buddhist temple in Nara, Japan, originally constructed in the mid-700s. It is home to one of Japan's largest bronze Buddha statues. The temple town of Tōdai-ji and Kasuga-Taisha Shrine contributed to the growth of Naramachi, which became a bustling area during the Edo period.
We were an Indian family visiting Japan in hot August. What a blessed beautiful Buddha temple! We visited Nara for just this and the deers. I loved the way the sanctity of the temple is maintained with silence & respect. We purchased tickets at the main entrance to visit the temple. There's a hot centre pathway towards the temple. Do drink the holy water provided outside the temple, very clean & refreshing. The massive Buddha statue will put you in awe. Right outside the temple is a occult figure, whose part you touch & then you touch your own body, your ailments are relieved, as written. There's lot of souvenir shopping, got few Todaiji folders & fans. Near exit had a popsicle stick & then when feeding the deers enjoyed a matcha ice cream. Total time to visit is about an hour. We went at Noon!

⸻ We visited Todaji Temple today, and it was a wonderful experience. We took a train to get here, which was very convenient. The surrounding park is huge and lively, with many school kids on day trips, creating a pleasant vibe. The temple itself is beautiful, and deer are everywhere, making the walk even more enjoyable. Don’t miss the delicious ice cream, and make sure to shop at the nearby metro station—especially the French bakery for some great food. Overall, it was a fantastic day!
Anshu S — Google review
An impressive construction of both the hall housing the great statue itself and the additional comparatively smaller artworks. The sheer scale of the architecture is impressive. Despite a constant flow of visiting school classes access is good and the crowding is manageable. Please stay respectful to preserve this site for the future and also allow others to see and capture the view for themselves.

Tōdai-ji Temple (東大寺) is an absolute must-see when visiting Nara, and it perfectly complements your visit to Nara Park. It is an incredibly beautiful, large, and awe-inspiring temple with an undeniable sense of majesty and sanctity. Despite the crowds, the size of the temple and the quiet corners of the surrounding grounds still manage to convey a deep sense of sacredness. One of the best things about Tōdai-ji is its convenient location. You can easily walk to the temple directly from Nara Park. The path leading up to the temple gate is part of the park, which means your journey will be accompanied by plenty of deer who are often wandering right up to the entrance. It makes the walk to this sacred site an adventurous and charming experience!
Chanaporn Y — Google review
It was an awesome experience visiting this temple, home of the world's largest bronze Buddha statue. The surrounding park is huge, 🦌 deers everywhere, many school kids on day trips creating a pleasant vibe. I recommend to visit this place if you are in Nara.
Giannina L — Google review
Went on a cloudy day with a little drizzle. Amazing views and very impressive architecture. The huge Buddha statue looks amazing up close, with the entire temple looking very majestic. Deers were friendly and cute. It was mating season for deers, so male deers were a little hostile, but I did not encounter any hostility. You can buy crackers for 200 yen, and feed the deers. Amazing experience. All in all amazing place to visit no matter the weather. It can be quite crowded though.
Damian G — Google review
Visited on sunday, early morning. Very quite, almost no crowd. I really soaked and enjoyed the tranquility. Inside you can see the magnificent statue with brief explanation and a little history. I recommend to visit this temple should you come to Nara. A few deer can be seen along the route to this temple and to outside of the temple. The deer add the authenticity of the ancient nara vibe.
Mario K — Google review
Absolutely loved this temple. It is close to Kyoto so I had limited time and did it in half a day. We arrived at 12:30 and left at 4pm. There were cute deer I was able to pet one. The females seem cuter than the male deer and you could pet them. I found the statues of Buddha in Todaiji grand. Read the history if you are interested and you can learn about how Buddhism influenced Japan and ultimately is practiced alongside Shintoism.

Nara National Museum, established in 1889, is a prominent national art museum showcasing an extensive collection of Japanese Buddhist art. Situated east of Kofuku-ji Temple within Nara-koen Park, the museum comprises two buildings. The older structure houses the Nara Butsuzo-kan (Hall of Buddhist Images), exhibiting the permanent collection of exquisite Buddhist images. On the other hand, the newer building hosts special temporary exhibits.
The Nara National Museum (奈良国立博物館, Nara Kokuritsu Hakubutsukan), located in Nara Park, is an art museum which primarily displays Japanese Buddhist art. Saw the National Treasures exhibition. As per the advice of other reviewers I went late and queues weren’t too bad. Still busy inside. Buddhist sculpture hall is impressive.

I love visiting the museum today. There are many items from old Japan of interest there. It certainly expanded my knowledge of Japan. It's only roughly $7 Australian dollars to get in and if you are over 70 it's free. You'll need to provide proof!

We only saw the building during our visit to Nara Park. It is a landmark in the park that can't be missed. We didn't have time to enter the museum to have a look but the building looks pretty nice from outside.

Lots of national treasures and well preserved artifacts on display. Easily spend 1-2 hours looking over everything.

This place is huge and rich in history. Love the outside, full of deer and fountains, trees. You can feel the peace. There are not too many people around, most are walking in Nara Park.

The Nara National Museum, located in Nara, Japan, is a prominent cultural institution dedicated to preserving and showcasing Japanese art and Buddhist heritage. Established in 1889, the museum is situated in Nara Park, a historic area renowned for its ancient temples, friendly deer, and serene atmosphere. The museum plays a vital role in highlighting Nara’s significance as Japan’s first permanent capital and a cradle of Japanese culture. The museum’s collections are particularly rich in Buddhist art, reflecting the deep spiritual history of the region. Its holdings include statues, paintings, ritual objects, and sacred texts spanning various periods, from the Asuka and Nara periods (6th-8th centuries) to later eras. Among its most notable artifacts are the exquisite sculptures and ceremonial relics that offer a glimpse into the craftsmanship and religious devotion of early Japanese artisans. The Nara National Museum comprises two main buildings: the original Main Hall, a designated Important Cultural Property, and the East Wing, which features a more contemporary design. The museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions alongside its permanent displays, drawing visitors from across the globe. A highlight of the museum’s calendar is its annual exhibition of treasures from Tōdai-ji Temple, showcasing priceless artifacts usually kept within the temple’s Great Buddha Hall. This exhibition underscores the museum’s mission to connect the public with the profound cultural and spiritual legacy of Japan. Visiting the Nara National Museum is a deeply enriching experience, offering insights into Japan’s artistic, historical, and spiritual traditions.

Kasuga Taisha is a Shinto shrine located in Nara, Japan, known for its bright vermillion columns supporting the roof. Established in 768 A.D., it offers plenty of photo opportunities both inside and outside the pay area. The shrine's surroundings also provide numerous great spots for photography. The transfer of the national capital to Nagaoka-kyo led to the development of Naramachi as a temple town, with Kasuga Taisha becoming a prominent attraction.
There’s a bit of a walk through the forest to get here but it’s well worth it. Keep following the path of stone lanterns to get here, admiring the hundreds of deer you’ll see along the way. Once you arrive at the shrine, you’ll be greeted by some of the most stunning architecture imaginable. This shrine’s unique feature is that it has tons of lanterns. The dark room with the lit lanterns was very cool! There is also a tree within the shrine that is said to be over a thousand years old. There’s a lot to see and do, so I highly recommend a visit to this shrine.
Cody P — Google review
Enormous shrine and a beautiful one. Since I only had a few minutes because I had to go back to my hotel to check-out, I had to be rather quick and I regret not having visited the shrine the day before when I arrived at Nara with more time to spare because it totally deserves a more thorough visit. Also, very photogenic. This coming from a tourist with no particular knowledge about the shrine (again, I would have liked to have more free time here to learn about the place had I known it was this amazing).
André M — Google review
Amazing shrine. Filled with lantern offerings me and old. The walk up is also filled with stone lanterns. The walk through the park is magical with the ancient forest surrounding the park, filled with deer and large overgrown lanterns is cooler than the broiled park below. When you stone at the shrine there is a lovely cooling spot as well as the usual offering places and offerings for prayers. On entry to the paid section you find many lanterns. Most be amazing when they light these for festivals. As with all Shinto temples is an amazing blend of ritual and offering. Was fairly quiet and could wander in peace apart from the room filled with Karen’s and mirrors which got a bit selfie crazed. Mostly bustling Europeans.

Feel the zen in the middle of the forest. All the rain, moss, trees and deer bring me more close to nature. The wwalk to the temple is amazing.

When I visited Kasuga-taisha Shrine in Nara, I was struck by the mysterious atmosphere, where the elegance of the nobility and the bustle of the common people merged in a single air. The corridors of the shrine are graceful... At the same time, the approaches to the shrine are decorated with lanterns, deer roam the area. Note: This is a sacred place, so be polite and quiet 🤫
Haru K — Google review
The temple is a bit of a hike from the train station, up hill with a few steps as well. But it is very beautiful and worth it. I came during a rainy day, so I didn't travel deeper. Will come back again for sure.

It’s a little bit far to walk to Kasugataisha temple but it’s worth the to just walk through the amazing way surrounded by the religious symbols and all the deer 🦌 walking around and asking to feed them 😍👍❤️

Toshodai-ji is a Buddhist temple complex in Nara, Japan, renowned for its 8th-century Golden Hall, considered a national treasure. Established in 759 by the Chinese priest Ganjin, it was pivotal in the introduction and development of Buddhism in Japan. The main hall underwent extensive renovation and reconstruction over nearly ten years before reopening in late 2009.
It’s a bit out of the way but reachable by train. Love this old Nara temple. Don’t miss the moss garden, it’s magical. The atmosphere is calming, spend the time to soak in the serene environment and walk around the gardens. UNESCO Heritafe site that’s not inundated with crowds, one of the highlights of my Japanese trip.

An incredibly ancient temple where you can see the traces of history etched into the wooden beams. Inside the main hall stands a magnificent and awe-inspiring Great Buddha that truly moves the heart. There’s a small trail at the back leading to a memorial site for the Sixth Patriarch. It’s not the easiest place to reach, but absolutely worth the trip.

A masterpiece well introduced in Google. I learnt about this historic site, a Unesco heritage site of Japan, before I was there. My holiday itinerary was not planned for this. I encouraged my son's and daughter to accommodate this temple while on that day in Nara visiting Daitoji temple. All of us were really having an immersion architecture of Tang Dynasty. This place received little tourists attention. My tourist guide experience vouches for its outstanding features in all aspects.

Cherry Blossom season is quiet compared to other crowded sites, it’s relaxing & zen. The Tang Dynasty Chinese Buddhist Master 鉴真大和上 tried to cross the ocean 6 times & finally successfully reached Japan after so many years of failed attempts & loss of his closest friends, his determination & bravery to spread architectural, medicine etc knowledges & wisdoms & peace beyond borders was selfless & significant even after 1300 years… Truly a master of pure heart & kindness!
Karen L — Google review
A serene and sacred oasis, completely different from the many temples so crowded that have effectively reduced themselves to tourist traps. The historic walkway outside also beats Gion.

Beautiful Buddhist temple. Incredibly well taken care of. The Garden surroundings the temples were very nice well worth the visit. A very piecefull place. Yakushi-ji, a significant Buddhist temple in Nara, was originally constructed in 680 and was once among the Seven Great Temples of the area. The site is known for its two pagodas, each representing different periods of Japanese history. The East Pagoda, built in 1285, is admired for its asymmetrical design and has been likened to 'frozen music' by an early Western specialist in Japanese art.
One of the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara”, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this place seems off by design. It pretty much feels like I am in ancient China. Well anyway, it is inspired by ancient China. You’ll see two pagoda standing tall from the main gate. One is original, the other is reconstructed. This place is really beautiful. The statues of all wood-carved Buddha offer a sense of spiritual feeling of enlightenment. You should visit here when you are in Nara, Japan.

Yakushiji Temple (薬師寺), located in Nara, Japan, is one of the most significant and ancient Buddhist temples in the country. Originally constructed in 680 CE during the Asuka period by Emperor Tenmu, the temple was built to pray for the recovery of his wife, Empress Jitō. Dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of Medicine and Healing, the temple symbolizes hope and spiritual healing. Yakushiji is renowned for its symmetrical layout and stunning architecture, epitomizing the classical style of early Japanese Buddhism. The temple complex includes several iconic structures, most notably the East Pagoda (東塔, Tōtō), a three-story pagoda dating back to the 8th century. This is the only original structure that survived multiple fires and is celebrated for its elegant design and intricate details. The West Pagoda (西塔, Saitō) and the Kondō (金堂, Main Hall) have been meticulously reconstructed to preserve their historical and spiritual significance. Inside the Kondō, visitors can find an extraordinary bronze triad statue of Yakushi Nyorai flanked by two Bodhisattvas, exemplifying artistic mastery from the Hakuho period. These statues are considered national treasures and reflect the deep devotion to Buddhist teachings. In addition to its architectural and artistic treasures, Yakushiji Temple serves as an active center for Buddhist worship and meditation. The temple’s tranquil atmosphere and rich history make it a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-visit destination for those seeking to explore Japan’s cultural and spiritual heritage.

This is a peaceful temple belonging to the Yogācāra school of Buddhism. It features a beautiful pagoda and murals depicting scenes from the Great Tang Dynasty’s journeys to the Western Regions. It’s a great place for those interested in Buddhist teachings and history. Legend has it that relics of Xuanzang are enshrined here.

July 5th 2025 I attended a group tour organised by Nara International Citizen centre, along with students from NAIST and Nara University. We went to three places, Yakushi-Ji is our first stop. We were just in time to see the buddhist monks performing their prayers (as you can see from the video). This place temple specifically feels oddly calming, reminding me of Todai-ji. As you walk around, enjoying the lotus flowers and ancient architectures. Hopefully, you'll feel as peaceful and relaxed as I did!

Isuien Garden and Neiraku Museum is a must-visit destination in Nara, Japan. The garden, established centuries ago, is divided into two sections: the front garden from the 17th century and the rear garden from 1899. It features a Shakkei-style landscape design that incorporates the surrounding scenery into its beauty. The small yet fascinating Neiraku Art Museum within the garden showcases ancient Chinese bronze wares, mirrors, seals, and Korean pottery.
A well manicured collection of Japanese gardens maintained to perfection! The entrance fee is 1200 Yen, thereby explaining the low numbers of visitors. It’s pricey, but worth your while. There is a path for you to follow. You can spend about half hour here to take lots of pictures. The mix of ponds, streams, hills, huts and flora make this place a photographer’s dream. The adjoining museum was a let down. There weren’t many exhibits and most of the words were in Japanese. You have to remove your shoes and wear slippers to enter. It is includes in the entrance fee. In all, I would highly recommend a visit! Thumbs up!

It is beautiful Japanese garden located in Nara, the old capital of Japan near Kyōto. It has been preserved since its creation in the Meiji era, and is the only walking garden in Nara. The gardens cover roughly 145,000 square feet (13,500 m2). In the central pond of the gardens, there are two islands with sculptures of a crane and tortoise. In Japanese culture these animals represent longevity. Beautiful place. Lots to see. Uneven terrain, lot of walking. Wear comfy shoes, take water, wear hat, sunscreen. Toilets available. Great place for photography.

It is a peaceful and well designed Japanese garden. Some parts of it are currently under constructions but you are still able to visit it. The entrance fee is 1200 yen per adult and it's totally worth it. Autumn has just begun so there wasn't a lot of red leaves, but still the mix of green/ yellow/ red leaves compose a pretty and peaceful picture. Recommended to make a stop before going to the temples.

Go check this out!!! Stumbled upon this lookn to get out of the crowds of the bamboo forest. Paid entry but definitely worth it. Garden is pristine. Historical tea houses have placards that explain in detail. Friendly staff.

Beautiful gardens blending together water and land features. Quite pricey but we were offered a tour for free; our tour guide was super knowledgeable and friendly, talking about the history of the garden and Japanese garden structure, an experience I would definitely recommend if in the area.

Nakatanidou is a well-known store near Nara Park that specializes in traditional Japanese mochi rice cakes. The shop offers making demonstrations where visitors can witness the high-speed process of mochi-pounding, adding to the experience of enjoying this beloved dessert. Despite its unassuming appearance, Nakatanidou draws crowds with its efficient and friendly service, offering warm and fragrant mochi with red bean filling.
Although very touristy, this place is worth a stop, or even a trip to visit. I usually don’t like super “touristy” places, but the mochi show actually was fun to watch. Crowds build up fairly quickly, but the mochi pounding happens fairly regularly, so we were able to watch two. Finally, the mochi itself is a 10/10. It’s so fresh and still warm. Again, we got seconds. Worth a stop and even a side trip to visit!
Scott P — Google review
The place is Groovy Cafe and located immediately above Nakatanidou. The happiest time is between 1400 till 1700 because it's Shaved Ice Time, Baby! Groovy serves unique, Nara-themed shaved ice and jelly desserts. They're a perfect escape from the > 32°C temps outside. And the best part is no need to feel guilty since these aren't overly sweet, served with fruit and fibre plus they're mostly water (shaved ice). Why fibre? Red bean, kudzu jelly and local fruits are the preferred sweet elements in the dessert. You gotta stay hydrated!
Elliza A — Google review
A must-try when in Nara! The mochi was soft with perfect texture, matching with the red bean paste with just-nice sweetness. What attracts the tourists most was the live mochi pounding that happens every 10-15mins before 3pm (if i'm not mistaken). It gets crowded pretty fast but clears very fast at the same time and there's crowd control in-charge.
Bea G — Google review
To my awareness they only serve Mochi with red bean filling, or maybe I just didn’t look around. My husband and I initially got 1 each but it was so good that we went back for a second round. A good thing too since we were able to witness the matcha pounding by the shop owner and staff. This was around 10:40am. There were no lines since service was fast, even though it was crowded. Recommend to try when you visit Nara!
Danielle C — Google review
I tried Nakatanidou mochi for the first time because it went viral — I just had to see what the hype was about. They start pounding the mochi around 1 PM, and it’s really fun to watch! The mochi itself is super soft, filled with sweet red bean paste, and covered in some kind of brown powder (not sure what it is, but it tastes good). They also sell grilled mochi, which has a nice crispy texture.
Nataliana S — Google review
It was so fun watching how they made the mochi — super entertaining and skillful! The mochi itself was soft, chewy, and absolutely delicious. The street was packed with people stopping to watch and record the whole process. Totally worth checking out!
MND — Google review
If you’re strolling around Nara, you have to make a quick stop at Nakatanidou. It’s a small mochi shop that’s super famous for its mochi-making performance—yes, you can actually watch the staff pound the mochi live with impressive speed and coordination. It’s fun and kind of a mini-show on its own! I tried their signature yomogi mochi with red bean filling, which is the only flavor available. The mochi is soft, fresh, slightly warm, and has a rich, earthy aroma from the yomogi. The red bean paste is smooth and not overly sweet—really well done. I’d give it a solid 8/10. That said, personally, I usually prefer more flavor variety like peanut or matcha. So while it was a great experience, I’m not sure I’d go out of my way to buy it again unless I’m nearby. But that’s just my own taste. 📍How to get there: Nakatanidou is located in Nara-machi, about a 5–10 minute walk from Kintetsu-Nara Station. Super easy to find on foot, and it’s near other main tourist spots like Nara Park and Todai-ji. Worth checking out at least once, especially for the live mochi-making!
Mario S — Google review
Absolutely delicious mochi with red bean filling served at this shop near to Nara park. It is super touristy and gets very crowded to the point that they even have a guy hired to control the crowds from the traffic. Definitely worth a visit, the mochi is served fresh and tastes really good, not too sweet and it has a really nice soft and chewy texture. Mochis sell at 200¥ a piece. If you're lucky and patient, wait around to get a glimpse of the mochi pounding process ✌️

Mount Wakakusa is a 1,122-foot tall hill in Nara, Japan. It hosts the annual festival called Yamayaki, during which dead grass is burned. The hill offers stunning views and is a popular attraction among visitors to Nara Park. The area is also known for its wild deer population, with two types of deer residing in the region: "park deer" and "Mount Wakakusa deer." Both types primarily feed on various grasses found in the area.
Beautiful view and a peaceful hike! The scenery from the top was stunning, especially overlooking Nara. A lovely place to enjoy nature and spot some deer along the way.

Beautiful views of the city from atop the hill. Not a difficult climb, but will take a bit to get to the very top. Deer are present all the way up the hill.

The deer is very cute and not afraid of people. The entrance ticket to the mountain is very cheap, only 150 yen. The scenery at the top of the mountain is very beautiful, making it an excellent place to overlook Nara.

Mount Wakakusa – A Scenic and Refreshing Hike in Nara Park Mount Wakakusa is a highly recommended spot within Nara Park. The entire hill is covered with lush green grass, offering a serene and picturesque landscape. Although the mountain stands at 342 meters above sea level, my step-counting app showed an elevation gain equivalent to climbing 48 floors, which likely reflects the actual ascent from the base to the summit. There are two common hiking trails leading up the mountain. Both are well-maintained and easy to follow, with smooth paths and no major difficulty. For someone with moderate fitness, it takes about 40 to 60 minutes to reach the top without rushing. From the summit, you can enjoy a stunning bird’s-eye view of Nara City — definitely worth the effort! Mount Wakakusa is only about a 5–10 minute walk from Tōdai-ji Temple, making it very convenient to visit both in the same day.
Sweet K — Google review
Ticket is 150 yen per person. It's a very beautiful and calming place. We didn't go to the peak of the mountain and only stayed around the hill area, but the views are already very beautiful. Definitely much more worth visiting compared to the very crowded Nara Park. You can find deers around these areas too.
Patricia A — Google review
We were just sitting in the lawn at the foothills, where we noticed people going up from the sideways. We decided to go upto the rest stop, but ended up climbing up this mini trek! Beautiful view point of Nara from up here. Some historical stone also seems to be kept up here.

Amazing views with the deer in the foreground. Quite a strenuous climb, that keeps on going. Limited drinks at top.

Nice view and windy if you managed to climb up to the first peak. There are 3 peaks, see how high you want to go. Entrance fee is ¥150 per pax. There are two entrance gate, one east side and one west side. You can climb up one side and come down the other. No toilet along the hike (toilet only at the entrance area), deers only a handful around.

The Irie Taikichi Memorial Museum of Photography in Nara City, Japan is a must-visit for photography enthusiasts. The museum, previously known as the Nara City Museum of Photography, showcases an impressive collection of Japanese photography in a beautifully designed glass-walled space that blends seamlessly with its surroundings. This memorial museum was opened to honor the works of native photographer Irie Taikichi, who captured the essence of Nara through his compelling photographs depicting local culture, events, and Buddhist statues.
After visiting the former residence of Irie Taikichi, I continued my journey on knowing more on the photographer by paying a visit to his name sake photography gallery. The architecture itself is very special, with a large open pond and terrace field-like slopes. And the permanent exhibition is a powerful tool to display the great photographer’s love for the Yamato Road, or, simpler, Nara.

Train station
Nara Station is a bustling hub for travelers, offering convenient access to the city's main attractions. Visitors can witness the spectacular Hanaougi Hono Gyoretsu parade, which kicks off at 17:00 and features traditional Nara-era attire and impressive imperial carriages. For those seeking relaxation, a nearby hotel provides spacious rooms and access to natural hot spring baths.
Nara Station is a key gateway to the historic city of Nara, located in Nara Prefecture, Japan. As a major transportation hub, it connects visitors to the city’s rich cultural heritage, famous attractions, and natural beauty. Operated by both JR West and the Kintetsu Railway, Nara Station provides convenient access to destinations like Nara Park, Todaiji Temple, Kasuga Taisha Shrine, and Kofukuji Temple. The JR Nara Station is a modern facility with a blend of traditional and contemporary design elements, reflecting the city’s ancient history while catering to modern travel needs. Its spacious layout features ticket counters, automated machines, and a tourist information center, where visitors can find maps, brochures, and guidance in multiple languages. The station also houses shops and restaurants offering local specialties, such as kakinoha sushi (persimmon leaf sushi) and Nara’s famous sake. The Kintetsu Nara Station, located nearby, is closer to key attractions like Nara Park and serves as another convenient point of entry. Both stations are well-connected by local buses and taxis, making it easy for travelers to explore the city. Nara Station also serves as a cultural introduction to the city, with artistic displays and decorations inspired by Nara’s deer and historic sites. Its strategic location and comprehensive amenities make it a starting point for unforgettable journeys through one of Japan’s most historically rich and spiritually significant cities.

The deer bow gently; temple bells drift across the park. Nara breathes peace and patience, its history alive in every stone lantern. The train halts beneath wide skies, where time feels circular and kind. This is not an ending — only arrival into timelessness. Tourist Tip: Final stop. Visit Todai-ji, Kasuga Taisha, and Nara Park. Connect to Yamatoji Line for Osaka. Arrive early morning for serene walks with deer. Stay overnight to see lanterns glow at dusk.
Stray L — Google review

Always delayed, super unreliable The JR Nara Line is honestly one of the worst when it comes to being on time. It feels like almost every week there’s some kind of delay—signal trouble, construction, or just “for some reason.” If you’re commuting, it’s super stressful because you can’t count on it to actually arrive on schedule. Compared to other JR lines, the Nara Line is way behind. They really need to improve punctuality and communication, because right now it’s just frustrating.
Hiro H — Google review
JR Nara Station is one of two main railway stations serving the city of Nara, the other being Kintetsu Nara Station. If you have a Japan Rail Pass then this is the station that you will use when visiting Nara. Though JR Nara Station is not as centrally located as Kintetsu Nara Station, it is still within walking distance of the city’s main attractions and is also very well connected with bus links and taxis. Fortunately, JR Nara Station is quite compact and easy to navigate, with just five platforms and one set of ticket gates. Despite its small size, the station has plenty of useful amenities and there is also a lot of information available to help you find your way around. In this article we will explain the general layout of the station and introduce some of the useful facilities that are available.

Nara has a history of more than 1,200 years, and here and there you can see the earthen walls of temples and shrines that have remained exactly as they were back then, as well as tiles and pillars that give you a sense of the passage of time. It's lined with cafes, galleries, second-hand bookstores, and miscellaneous goods stores built in repurposed old houses, making it perfect for a stroll for adults. There seem to be many residents, so it seems like a good place to enjoy the town quietly. It's a good walking course. The intersections may be straight or intricate, and the walls may be earthen walls or blocks. There are wooden doors and aluminum doors. There are mansions and modern houses, and it's a mix of things, but it's full of flavor and a sense of life, and you can enjoy it. Of course, there is no trash left, and the alleys and gardens have been sprinkled with water, and even the small potted plants have been taken care of, making them look lively. Nara has a history of over 1200 years. Looking at the earthen walls of the temples and shrines, which still have their original divisions, as well as the aged tiles and pillars, it has a character that sets it apart not only from Edo, but also from Kamakura and Kyoto. For some reason, Nara has an overwhelming dignity. This place exceeded my expectations. Every single staff member I encountered was exceptionally friendly. Even though I don't know much Japanese, they still made me feel welcomed and were so helpful. They provide you with so many helpful resources, including maps, and give you so many helpful recommendations. They also let you make origami! The room was beautiful, and the view was incredible. What makes this place even more special is the opportunity to join free cultural experiences like origami folding and Japanese calligraphy. We were warmly introduced to both, and it was not only fun but also meaningful—we even got to take home a handmade souvenir! Thank you so much to the entire team. This is, without a doubt, one of the best visitor centers we've encountered in all of Japan. Highly recommended!

We got the West facing Japanese superior room with en-suite bathroom. The room is spotless clean and well maintained. The only down side is that they have central AC so the room cannot adjust temperature, and it could get a little warm in the room even in late Oct. Luckily the hotel provides a fan. We open the window and kept the fan on all night without turning on the central AC because they already had the heat on. Next time I would try to request an East facing room which a view to the pond. They have a public bathroom in the hotel, we used it and it was great! The overall experience was great. Very good location with a convenient store downstairs. It is not 24 hrs but Lawson is few mins walk away.

Himuro Shrine is a serene Shinto shrine located in Nara, known for its beautiful gardens featuring a pond and spring cherry blossoms. The shrine is home to the impressive shidare-zakura cherry tree, which signals the arrival of spring in Nara with its early bloom. Visitors can also admire other species of sakura contrasting with the crimson red torii gate at the entrance.
Generally peaceful. I consider it to be a good stop before you head to the Todaiji Temple. I've come here on Sunday and it can get really busy but it's May so it's not crazy busy. Goshuin costs 600 yen. It's known for its ice offerings and you can buy an ice fortune that is relieved when placed on the ice.
Gabby P — Google review
Himuro Shrine (氷室神社), located near Nara Park in Nara City, is a charming Shinto shrine with a unique historical significance tied to ice preservation. The shrine, whose name translates to “Ice Room Shrine,” is dedicated to the deity of ice, honoring the role of ice in ancient rituals and daily life. Established during the Heian period (794–1185), Himuro Shrine was built to venerate the gods responsible for the natural formation and preservation of ice. In a time before refrigeration, ice was a rare and valuable commodity, used in imperial ceremonies and for preserving food. Himuro Shrine’s spiritual significance grew as it became associated with the protection of ice and cold weather. The shrine is modest in size but rich in cultural charm. Its serene atmosphere is enhanced by traditional wooden architecture and seasonal beauty, including cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves later in the year. A notable feature is the annual Himuro Shrine Ice Festival (Himuro Taisai), held every May. During this event, large blocks of ice are offered to the deities, symbolizing gratitude and the importance of ice in daily life. Visitors often stop at the shrine to seek blessings for health, prosperity, and relief from summer heat. Himuro Shrine also offers a quieter alternative to Nara’s larger and more crowded attractions, making it an ideal destination for those seeking tranquility and a deeper connection to Japan’s cultural traditions.

🧊 Himuro Shrine (氷室神社) is a beautiful, peaceful sanctuary that offers a welcome moment of quiet reflection amidst the hustle of Nara Park. It holds a special charm and a deep sense of serenity and spirituality (khlang). The shrine is conveniently located right next to Nara Park and is along the path leading to the much larger and famous Tōdai-ji Temple. It’s an easy and worthwhile stop on your walking tour. Atmosphere: Compared to the main attractions, Himuro Shrine is quiet and tranquil. It is dedicated to the God of Ice, which gives it a unique history, particularly with regard to ice making and refrigeration. The Unique Experience: Ice Fortune Teller! The most memorable part of a visit here is their special fortune telling ritual: * The Ritual: For JPY 200, you can try their unique omikuji (fortune slip) where you place the paper slip onto a block of ice to reveal your fortune. * A Novel Experience: This is a truly new and unusual experience that you likely won't find at many other Japanese shrines. It’s a fun, inexpensive, and interactive way to get a glimpse into your future!
Chanaporn Y — Google review
Himuro Shrine is hardly one of the more popular attractions in Nara, but it’s still worth a visit. It’s on the way if one is walking from the train station to Todai-ji, so one doesn’t even need to go out of one’s way to visit. A short visit is enough, perhaps on the way to or way back from other attractions. This shrine is also quieter than the other more popular sites, which is a bonus if one is all touristed out.

This ancient garden is famous for its inclusion in the Manyo-shu collection of poems and features over 150 varieties of flowering plants. With approximately 300 different plant species from Japan's ancient times, it stands as the country's oldest botanical garden.
Very nice botanical garden. I think in spring would be better, but was also very nice in winter time. Entrance fee: 500¥ per person
Tecla V — Google review
Beautiful little garden but I think we visited in the wrong season. I imagine there’s a lot more to see in the spring. Much of it is getting remodeled but for $3 I was okay with the visit. Also, no crowds which was refreshing!
Megan B — Google review
I came here to see many different kinds of wisteria, and you can also enjoy other beautiful plants. ✅ No appointment is needed; you can buy tickets at the reception. ⚠️ There is only one entrance and exit, and it is not possible to walk to Kasuga Taisha from here. ⚠️ The use of camera tripods is not allowed.
Bertha L — Google review
It may not be as magical as other gardens i have seen in Japan but it is still good. They also have a really nice pond where you can feed the fish. It is quite interesting to see that they almost walk on ground to catch the food :) You can certainly see some indications of evolutionary transition.

This garden is a well maintained gem to visit in the Nara Park area. It’s a relief to escape from the madness of the deer and people, to a quiet and thought provoking space We loved that the plantings were highlighted by ancient poetry about the particular plant. If you love gardens you’ll enjoy this one with its bridges, wisteria features, small orchard and seating areas Feed the giant koi fish in the pond for 100Y Entry fee something like 700 Yen
Linda — Google review
Beautiful garden. Lots to explore. You can even feed the coy fish
Orion26 — Google review
Such a cool place to take a break from the deers and chill out at a peaceful garden
William X — Google review
Overall it's a nice looking garden, the island in the middle looks majestic, and you can feed koi fish. But a lot of the plants were pretty much dead, and a big part of the garden was closed off. If you're into botany, it's worth checking out, but if you just want some nice scenery, I wouldn't pay for this again

Situated at the peak of Mount Ikoma, this amusement park offers free entry for kindergarteners and special weekend events for children. Visitors can opt to pay separate fees for individual attractions or purchase a passport for unlimited rides.
Beautiful amusement park on top of a mountain. Great views!!! Several nice carnival rides! You can buy a booklet of tickets to use for the rides Bring cash to pay for the cable car fare ticket (no suica accepted at time of this post), also last trip to the top, or back down, is around 5 pm, so plan accordingly.

This retro amusement park locate 40 minutes from the center of Osaka. Please be sure to check tram timetable from Ikoma station up hill to the amusement park as tram operate not very often. There are not much rides and some are closed. And others some are not open all the time due to lack of staff. There is only 1 staff to control 2 rides and sometime you have to wait for the staff. Most of rides here are for young kid so adult may not much enjoy here. As a family traveler, I am satisfied of this space as long as my kid had fun. There is a restaurant inside the park with very good view and windy. The price is ok and the food is also fine.

Well, well, well, an outstanding minor local amusement park on top of a mountain. Reached by cable car, which is fun enough in itself. Rides and attractions have to be paid for separately, in the old school style. Best to visit when the place is closed, when you can still walk around inside and photograph the retro attractions. All the empty park is missing is an old man shaking his fist at kids and yelling “Don’t mess with forces you don’t understand!”
Timothy P — Google review
The park closes at 5pm and the last cable car down is 1710. We got there near closing so only got to try the cycling monorail. It was a short but sweet ride. 600 yen per person. The city views are nice from the top. Plenty of parking but we paid 2200 yen in parking fees.

The famous sunset on the self-paddle ride. Do check on the time of the sunset is taking place. The ride is less the a 8min depending on your needs of that particular picture that you are aiming for. If you are looking to spending more time taking an other rides, it is recommended to get the 3500 yen ticket booklet, allowing you to take on more rides as well. We get this for our sunset ride as we need to take 2 times of the same ride for taking sunset view.

Amusement park was closed on the day I visited. Already knew in adv but still came for the cute tram n temple on the same mountain. The amusement shld be fun for kids but maybe avoid hot sunny days.

Highly recommend - free entry Just pay for themed cable car 🚠 to get up there and back. Best views of osaka out to kansai airport and kyoto - restaurant is good and prices are fair. Best to buy 12pack of tickets for rides from vending machines 3500yen otherwise rides vary from 300-600 ea so tickets are best value, also loads of coin games and old school stuff- fun for kids and adults

Udon noodle restaurant
Restaurant
Mentouan is a delightful little udon shop located near the deer park in Nara. The soft-medium style udon, especially the original and curry purse udons, are highly recommended. The bean curd wrap around the udon absorbs the delicious broth, making it a perfect warm treat for a cold autumn day. Despite long queues, the experience is worth it. The rich broth and curry flavors make for an ideal winter meal.
Great meal, super filling. The curry option was thick and heavy but tasty- for lunch I think their main option is probably better. When we came you add your name to the written list rather than have to wait in a specific line, which was nice. Menu was big clear pictures, no English but we got by just fine and the server was very patient with our lack of Japanese.
Ken B — Google review
The lady who served us did not allow us to switch table even though my sis table had 2 empty seats by the side. She did give us ugly look throughout the service. Besides that, any additional request was not attended. Very poor service. It’s overpriced udon with nice design of kitsune only.
Vivian W — Google review
You have to go early and put your name on the list or you might miss it. When it went they were only open from 11am to 3pm, so it’s a pretty short time. If you don’t put your name on the list just forget it you’ll never get in. There was already quite a bit of names when I went but I only waited 45min since o was solo and a lot of people didn’t show up when their name was called (they wandered away and miss their window 🤷🏻‍♀️) I had the famous udon with the curry and it was one of the best Udon I had so far on my Japan trip ! This is one stop I’m happy I made.
Frederique M — Google review
Came here for lunch on 4 April 2025. There wasn’t a line when we first passed by at 1030 hrs (before opening hours) but when we came again at 1330 there was a very long waiting list. Luckily we managed to get in before their 1500 closing time and tried their famous udon. Easily accessible and located right next to Nara’s famous mochi shop Nakatanidou
Martin L — Google review
Udon noodles wrapped in a fried egg bag. The broth is very rich and is perfect for the winter season. The curry tastes great too, although it got a little more diluted from the noodles. There are only 20+ seats here and one wait staff so service may require patience. The queue took nearly an hour but was worth the experience. Toilets are available here, although you would be seated next to a large fish tank and the wall between you and the kitchen isn’t sound proof.
Hooke W — Google review
I found this place on Instagram and was hoping it wasn't a gimmick and after waiting almost two hours to sit down we discovered it wasn't. Unlike most restaurants that make you queue up when they are full, at Mentouan you write your name and number of people in your party on a list. This allows you to browse the shops close by rather than standing there the whole time. There are only a couple of soup options for the tofu skin "pouch". Beef curry, Dashi and Dashi with Mushrooms. I chose the Beef Curry and thoroughly enjoyed it! It was a well balanced curry with a fair amount of heat, but not too much. After I was done with the Udon noodles I finished off the tofu which was also good. As we were leaving the restaurant, the chef was in the entry way. I asked for a photo and he obliged.
Jason L — Google review
Waited approximately 40-45 minutes to be seated. Although there were open seats, they weren’t being used because staff shortage. Friendly staff, they’re just short on workers to serve a lot of people at once… so please understand while you wait! Waiting was well worth it! We ordered the curry udon and the regular udon. Broth was great for cold seasons, curry was fine too. I preferred the regular udon more because you can sip the broth and not so much for the curry. Shrimp tempura was decent, I recommend eating that first unless you want a not so crisp tempura. Had no issues bringing a large luggage to this restaurant, will visit again when in Nara!
Edward L — Google review
Enjoyed the udon noodles and the flavour of the broth and curry. It's worth trying for the experience and would recommend coming here early. I arrived at 10.55am on a Monday with about 15 people ahead and waited 30 minutes to be served. It is understandable the restaurant let's a few people in at a time as they appear to be understaffed.

Vegetarian cafe and deli
ONWA is a vegan cafe located near JR Nara Station in Japan, offering generous portions that even satisfy men. With a small seating area, the restaurant impresses visitors with exceptional food and friendly service. The menu features artisan vegan dishes made from scratch, including international and local cultural staples. Diners appreciate the quality ingredients and well-presented meals that are not overly greasy or sweet.
I was soooo excited to randomly find a gluten free cafe on our way to Nara Park. The chestnut cake was divine 😍😍 we had the Oriental vegan plate, while not a fan of vegan soy meats everything else was amazing. I loved the tea selections and gluten free cakes. They have an upstairs seating area (Japanese style on the floor) as well as a few seats downstairs. It was a little tricky to find the entrance as it seems like you’re walking through a gap at the end of the fence so it was a really fun find!

One of the best meal we had in Japan. A bit away from touristic Nara but definitely worth the short walk. Everything was so cute and beautifully presented, tasted amazingly delicious. On top of that the people working there were super friendly and welcoming. I’m recommending this place to anyone on a day trip to Nara! 😋

This vegan restaurant is simply amazing. Every dish is freshly prepared with so much care, you can really taste the quality and love that goes into the food. Everything was delicious, from the drinks (we had matcha and ginger ale) to the main dish (vegan delight) to the cakes. Actually, the cakes are some of the best vegan desserts we’ve ever had, hands down. The owner, and staff, are so friendly and welcoming, creating such a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere in this little restaurant. It’s the perfect place to enjoy delicious food and unwind. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Nara; vegan or not, you’ll love it!

Housed in a renovated old-style house near Mount Wakakusa, this quiche specialty shop was opened by an experienced chef with Italian cuisine background.
One of the best quiche I had. Moist and creamy. Usually not a fan of quiche cos those in cafes are usually very blah. We had the anago and the scallops lunch set. Portions look small but sufficient. Loved the veggies that comes w it. Cosy and quiet. It was perfect.

Aquarium
Art museum
Nara Kingyo Museum is a unique attraction in Nara, offering a delightful experience for the whole family. The museum showcases over 3,000 goldfish in elaborate aquarium displays and features artistic exhibits designed for interactive and picturesque experiences. Visitors can enjoy the combination of traditional Japanese culture with modern creativity as they explore the various species of goldfish and goldfish-themed artworks. Additionally, there is a mini Trick Eye Museum within the premises, adding an extra element of fun to the visit.
The Nara Kingyo Museum is a hidden gem. It is an art display/gallery that just happens to feature goldfish. If you like art, and/or goldfish, you will enjoy this place. When I visited the Nara Kingyo Museum, I went in with little or low expectations. The description and ads for the place only caught my attention because it seemed "different". I went ahead and purchased my ticket since the price was affordable. Upon arriving and entering the museum, I was surprised to see there wasn't much people. The displays in the beginning were a bit...underwhelming. Kind of a cheapo "teamLabs" thing going on. But I mean, it wasn't expensive to get in, and it's in Nara, the damn deer are the most popular thing here. However, the further I went into the museum, the better it got. You don't have to proceed in the direction the museum points out to go, but it is highly recommended to do so. It gradually reveals better and more elaborate displays the further you go in. This place literally is all photo ops. Depending on how much you love taking photos and appreciating art will determine how much time to spend here. I gave myself a 2 hour time limit on my itinerary and I felt it wasn't enough time. It should have been at least 4 hours to really take my time and appreciate everything. Also best to go with someone, there are several areas where they set up a stand to put your phone for a selfie but there are many other places where you need someone to take a photo for you. I heard some other people/groups while I was in there but I never ran into anyone the whole time. *An important note: Although I didn't take any stars off, another reviewer did point out that there may be dead fishes in the displays. Yes, I did see some belly up fish. There are also some tanks that are clearly overcrowded or too small for the size of fish inside. I really hope these fish are rotated out frequently to avoid stress and cruelty. The actual fish displays seem high maintenance and I hope the staff are doing everything needed to keep them healthy. There was no information I could find about how the fish are cared for but they do provide information on the artists that helped designed the place.* I highly recommend stopping by the Nara Kingyo Museum. The experience goes from, "eh, it's alright" to "okay, this is pretty impressive". This place can be fun by yourself but is best to bring a friend. The displays can be funny and get intimate and moody. Also, to not spoil anything, I only added photos of the entrance. There is a surprising amount of displays here!
James A — Google review
Great place for photos and see goldfish presented in an artful way. I took off three stars because there was a fish that was a small bowl with too little space to swim and move. The space between and the top of the gravel to the top of the water was too small for the fish to swim freely and the fish struggled to swim. In a different tank there were 6 fish in a small cube tank and not enough for them. In another tank, a fish was barely hanging onto life and floating with its head down and tail up.
Pam D — Google review
The target audience is mostly kids. If you don’t have kids, you don’t need to go there. Most of the setups are just for taking photos. The entrance fee is, comparing with other tourist attractions, much higher. Though it is understandable that lots of fish need to be kept alive. But there are lack of descriptions about the fish. It’s hard to acknowledge this as a ‘museum’.
Shuotian C — Google review
What happens when someone mixes LSD, Ikea interior design, and a pet shop? You get the Nara Kingyo Museum. It’s modern art with actual fish swimming around in glass cubes lit like a Tokyo nightclub. Half the time you don’t know if you should clap, meditate, or call an electrician. Every corner screams “artistic vision” while your brain screams “why are the fish watching me?” It’s weirdly hypnotic though. The lights, reflections, and goldfish floating in designer bowls somehow look like an underwater dream, or a bad trip with very expensive lighting. Worth it? Yeah, if you enjoy feeling mildly confused but visually satisfied. Bring your camera, leave your logic. Final score: 4/5 — Beautiful nonsense done right.
Wade W — Google review
The goldfish museum is conveniently situated on the 4th floor of Mi Nara shopping mall in Nara prefecture, making it easily accessible for visitors. Upon purchasing an entrance ticket priced at approximately ¥1,200 per person, guests are treated to a captivating display of goldfish tanks housed within intricately decorated rooms. Each room features unique themes such as the crystal, traditional kimono patterns, flowers and seasonal motifs, providing ample opportunities for stunning photographs. While the goldfish themselves are certainly a sight to behold, what truly sets this museum apart is its attention to detail in creating visually stunning setups. Whether you're a goldfish enthusiast or simply appreciate beautiful aesthetics, this museum is sure to leave a lasting impression.
Asitha L — Google review

I did this art aquarium as well as the art aquarium in Ginza. I'd have to say I like this one more. If going to the park to see the deer this is well worth adding to the days itinerary. Bigger than expected. Had multiple themed areas that were very creative and fun to see. Good place to sit down and rest to just enjoy the environment as well. Interactive places for pictures. The disco room was great.

Travelers can also take a 35-minute limited rapid express train from Osaka-Namba to reach Kintetsu-Nara Station quickly.
There is tons of luggage storage and we went out a busy time and I can't imagine lockers running out! It was interesting that we could rent a 1500 yen locker. It was just big enough for two medium suitcases and 2 backpacks. Don't be worried if you see the storage filled within the station as you come up the stairs. There is tons of extra locker rental near exit number six. Please see pictures. There is also super modern section where you can pay by credit card (no need to play around with coins)

Nice café inside Nara station. Serving espresso based coffee. I went for a cold Matcha latte. The Matcha taste was bold, it was very milky and sweet (perhaps they use a type concentrated milk), fair taste of Matcha that you could feel. Definetly for someone who likes it sweet. That was okay for me and felt good after that long day hoping around Nara. They do accept credit card and you will be able to connect to wifi or recharge your phone as they have plenty of space to do so. I paid 580 yen for that iced Matcha latte.

After a nice stroll from visiting and feeding the deer, our group of 5 landed in this stunning restaurant. The beef sirloin was better than the wagyu, IMO. The set meal was plenty to eat. The thinly shredded cabbage was a nice touch to add veggies to our meat set.

We arrived around 11:30 and were seated after about 30 minutes. The staff who welcomed us were very friendly, and so were the waiters and waitresses. We were a group of six adults and one kid. They have a high chair available, which is definitely a plus! Because there were a lot of customers, we were seated separately. It wasn’t a problem for us, but it might be for those who prefer to sit all together. Set meal prices vary depending on the type of meat. We ordered both the cheapest and the most expensive sets. The meat was cooked just right and went really well with the onsen tamago. The cabbage dressing was delicious, and the dips were great too. The only downside was that the meat portions were a bit small compared to most katsu places we’ve tried. Overall, great service and friendly, approachable staff. Would still recommend for the food quality and warm atmosphere! Payment is CASH ONLY.

Live the authentic breaded steak japanese style. Good, nice and cheap! Super recommended, the atmosphere and te presentation of the dishes looks incredible. The customer service is amazing and super polite and friendly, (specially the boss!) who bring my passport to police when i lost it ;)

This restaurant is located on the second floor near Nara Park. The food is quite good — nothing disappointing here — and the waiting time is short. The only drawback is that it’s cash only, so make sure to bring enough cash before coming. There’s a restroom available just outside the restaurant on the second floor. Service quality is decent, about average overall.

Quick place to grab lunch once you are done with the Temple/deer area. Beef only so if your are looking for another cut of meat then pick another spot. Food is tasty, with directions on how to use the several dipping sauces. Beers are cold and tall. If you are here in summer the AC is device to cool down. Deer can be seen from the window if you just want the view but not be harassed by the deer.

Great place for lunch! CASH ONLY! I ordered a set meal and it hit the spot! It was good, but a chain restaurant. I thought this was the restaurant in which you can grill the katsu to your liking, but it's not the same restaurant. Plus there is an egg shortage so I couldn't try this meal with egg. 😢

Big Mountain Cafe&Farm in Nara is a gluten-free restaurant with a monthly Japanese-style plate that showcases careful cooking and gentle flavors. The cafe offers a variety of smoothies, including one with kale that's naturally sweet and delicious. The owner's commitment to quality is evident throughout the shop, even extending to the cute restroom. It's a perfect stop after exploring Nara, especially for those with allergies.
Lovely Gluten free burgers. Had a lovely lunch here today. Need to order a meal & a drink for each person (one of the conditions). Burgers & chips were great and hubby ordered chicken karaage type dish which was yummy too. Not super cheap - we paid 9240yen for 4 people - but it was very tasty & safe.
Danielle R — Google review
I wish to give gluten free places a high rating, and I would give a 3.5 if such a rating was possible, but unfortunately I don't think that my experience was worth 4 stars. 1. The food was pretty good. I got a bacon and cheese burger and it came with fries. Pretty decent, not the best I've had. Frozen fries (nothing bad, just not special) that could've used more salt (no salt shaker on the table), burger that was juicy (a plus) but well done (disappointing but maybe that's how the Japanese like it?), barely any ketchup to dip and no sauce in the other container. The bun was very good, the highlight of the burger. 2. If you don't get a drink you must add 400 yen, which drives the cost even higher. 3. The location is not bad, but still 10+ minutes from the train station, so plan to arrive before leaving Nara (do keep in mind that they close at 5). 4. I just am disappointed with the quantity based on the price - I understand gluten free food and western food cost more but if I'm paying a higher price tag I would've appreciated a more generous serving of fries and sauces. I wasn't even offered a napkin.... (EDIT: I did see they provide more salt and sauces next to the bathroom, it was hidden, not advertised or given by default like many restaurants).
Naomi D — Google review
I ordered the gluten free chicken plate. While it was delicious I've been very sick since, so i think they need to double check their ingredients. Maybe the sauce?
Chela R — Google review
So grateful they let us come in! Google said they were open 1.2.25 at 3:30 pm but when we walked in they said no. We left and they ran out and asked if we needed gluten free and I am gluten intolerant so they allowed us to come in. The food was great and I bought earrings and cacao from the store. It has a very aloha vibe. Hawaii is my favorite place on earth so it was a much needed restorative lunch. Everything was healthy and fresh!
Amanda S — Google review
This place is great for the Picky Japanese Vegan or refueling Texas triathlete. I ordered the unhealthiest thing I could find on the menu. A bacon egg (bigmouth) cheeseburger with fries and washed it down with a kale smoothie. Sorry not sorry!
Sam C — Google review
I'll start my review with the most important part. It is very expensive, and the vegan gluten free pizza doesn't exist (anymore).. Food seems to be priced like western countries rather than Japan. We have gone to many restaurants and cafes for vegan and gluten free food and this was just another place we visited. There are actually many vegan and gluten free options in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. So the pricing doesn't match well here. They add 400 JPY to each person's bill if they don't order an (expensive!) drink with their meal. We've never seen that before. Service was good, atmosphere is nice, food was decent, but overall we don't recommend going here. Especially considering we walked 30 minutes to this place.
Rick L — Google review
I made a reservation for a gluten free "beauty" set meal at lunch. It was one of the most satisfying meals I had in my entire trip, but didn't weigh me down either. The omelet and chicken wrap were the highlights of the meal. I'm not a very sensitive celiac, but I had no reaction.
Kellie R — Google review

Heijō Palace Site Historical Park is a reconstruction of the 8th-century imperial palace that served as the residence of the emperor during most of the Nara Period in Heijo-kyo, modern-day Nara. The palace was a large rectangular walled enclosure housing ceremonial and administrative buildings, modeled after Xian in China. Today, visitors can explore the foundations and reconstructions of this once significant site, gaining insight into Japan's ancient history and architectural heritage.
We rented a bike and rode around the entire compound and it was nice to learn the history at each excavation site.
Than S — Google review
Not much of an attraction for sightseeing. I recommend taking a bike and going around the site and spending 15 minutes here. The railroad actually cuts the site in 2, but it's otherwise just a vast expanse of gravel and grass that I assume the locals just use as a normal park. The information center has more going for it such as exhibitions and learning resources for children. On the plus side, there's no entrance tickets needed for anything.

Heijo Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Nara, offers a fascinating journey into Japan’s ancient capital during the Nara period. The reconstructed buildings, including the grand Daigokuden Hall, give you a sense of the scale and significance of this historic site. The park's open spaces and well-maintained paths are perfect for exploring, and the on-site museum provides fascinating insights into the history and significance of the palace. Seasonal events and cultural activities make each visit unique. The expansive grounds are peaceful and ideal for a leisurely stroll, with informative exhibits that provide insights into Nara’s history and culture. Visiting during special events or festivals adds even more charm. A must-visit for history buffs and anyone interested in Japan’s rich heritage!

Hiking area
Wakakusayama Hill is a popular spot in Nara, Japan, where visitors can enjoy a refreshing hike and stunning views of the city. The hilltop offers panoramic vistas of Nara and features a stone marker with Japanese inscription at the summit. Visitors can choose between two routes to reach the top: a mountain trail that takes about 1-1.30 hours or stairs that can be completed in approximately 30 minutes.
Hill is a great little secret at the back of Nara park. There is a lower section and upper section. We went in June to watch the sunset and the lower section was decently busy, but not packed out. Plenty of deer (and deer poop) about. Really great atmosphere and beautiful views over the city, especially with the deer just chilling in the golden hour light. Its only 150 yen to enter but the 2 entry gates on the sides close at 5pm which is an issue when in summer, the sunsets are at 7pm and you can see plenty of people still in the park. The central exit turnstyles aren't manned after the entry gate closes though and the deer do pass in and out freely so do with that info what you will. (They'd be better off with an honesty box post-gate hours)
Benjamin C — Google review
Wonderful scenic spot at the rear end of Nara park. You don't want to miss this if you've already come all the way to Nara. But be warned it's quite a steep climb up all the way to the top, so maybe not ideal for those traveling with elderly people or kids. The views are amazing, so definitely worth the climb, but we came during peak summer, so it was extremely hot under the scorching sun and no deer in sight as they wandered to cooler and shaded parts of the park. On the plus side, we were the only ones at the top, so we had the hilltop all to ourselves ✨ Take note that they open only after 9am and 150¥ entrance fee for adults.
Alexander A — Google review
I am sucker for deer and a nice view. So I give this place 5 stars :) How to get here: You go to „Mount Wakakusa base North Gate“ for entering and get a ticket for 150¥. It takes around 20-25 min to get up the hill and the way is quite self-explanatory.
Zomb P — Google review
How to get here ? Well pay ¥150 and then walk for about 35-40mins to the summit. There are so many deers along the way. Amazing views great place for picnic but washroom locate near the main entrance where you buy the ticket
P K — Google review
If you go into Nara Park getting up here is sort of a must. View is great as is the constant breeze. There are a few ways to get there, including by car from around the back...where in the parking lot you'll find lots of refreshing vending machines if you climbed the actual thing from the front and are scorched.
Samuel L — Google review
Great experience, very calm environment, very few tourists and a very nice view ! The deer were also a lot calmer than the ones in Nara Parc. All you need is a good pair of legs for the hike up the steps !

Family restaurant
Takeout Restaurant
Kura Sushi is a popular conveyor belt sushi restaurant located near Kintetsu Nara Station. The restaurant offers a unique dining experience where customers can order ala carte items on a tablet and watch as their dishes arrive quickly, usually within 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Every 5 plates returned through a slot at the table gives diners a chance to win a prize from the gachapon machine above.
Went with friends as wanted to experience a conveyor style sushi restaurant in Japan. Most things were ala carte as the conveyor belt was frequently out of plates. You order ala carte items on a tablet and they came quick... Sometimes 30s, often 1-2 minutes. You return the plates by inserting them into a slot at the table. After every 5 plates slotted, a cartoon plays on the tablet revealing if you've won a gachapon. If you have, the gachapon machine above the table releases one.

Naramachi Nigiwai-no-Ie, also known as the Koshino Le, is a well-preserved former merchant district in Nara. As you stroll through this area, you'll encounter traditional residential buildings and warehouses that offer a glimpse into the town's history. One particular highlight is an old townhouse where visitors are welcomed to explore for free.
Naramachi Nigiwai is a hidden gem for those interested in Japanese history and architecture. It is a traditional townhouse museum in Nara, Japan, offering visitors a glimpse into historical Japanese living. It’s a beautifully preserved space that showcases authentic architecture, cultural artifacts, and daily life from the Edo period. The setting is quiet and serene, providing a relaxing escape from the busier tourist spots. Unlike many historical sites, entry is completely free, making it an accessible attraction for all travelers. The staff are welcoming and knowledgeable who provide insights into the history of the townhouse.

Really nice traditional house. Free entrance. We did that one and the Naramachi Koshi-no-le. Personally we preferred this one, it was bigger and there was more information. The staff gave us a sheet with a few descriptions for some rooms plus there were posters in the rooms themselves. However, you can tell they used google translate as a lot of it doesn’t make sense, so you have to use contexte to understand them. It was a nice window into life in Japan at the time. The kitchen is less traditional as it was renovated more recently.

Azekuraya is a casual restaurant located in the middle of Nara near Todaji temple. It offers a variety of Japanese meals and provides an English menu for convenience. The menu includes options for vegans and vegetarians, with the possibility to customize dishes by choosing thicker udon noodles or soba noodles made from buckwheat. The service is reasonably fast, making it an ideal spot for a quick meal during a day trip in Nara.
Small cosy joint near the Todaiji temple. Greeted with smiles by the elderly owners here. Food is great and warms the body on a cold day despite the limited food choices. Had the yakitori don, hits the spot and tasty.

Nice restaurant in Nara national park! It’s away from the city center and you can conveniently continue your route after visiting the Todaiji temple. They seem to offer a lot of local sweets and desserts (we didn’t try) but they also serve food for lunch. The old lady that works here was really nice and they have air conditioning.

We had a pleasant meal here, served by some sweet older ladies! The shop caters to the tourist crowd and only takes cash, so be sure to carry plenty of cash. The food was good and hit the spot on a cold winter day. Nothing mindblowing, just solid, homemade flavors. Seating is limited, so stop in only if your group is fewer than 5 people. They do speak limited English, but offer an English menu for anyone who needs it.

What caught my attention was the curry with the deer shaped rice but I ended up ordering soba noodles with 2 shrimp tempuras, which was extra. The soup was a bit salty and the serving was a bit small. But, what saved the day was the dessert set I got. It was tasty and refreshing—just what I needed after a long walk in the park and salty foods.

Take this place for what it is, it’s a random restaurant in the middle of Nara by Todaji temple. Expect no frills but the price is decent and the food is decent. Service is reasonably fast. It’s basically everything I would want in the middle of my Nara day trip. I would not recommend the deer curry. I think it’s labeled as beef curry but there’s basically no beef in it. It makes for nice pictures though. Dessert was very nice and refreshing. We got the combo set with 3 desserts and matcha tea. Again nothing fancy but it was simple and clean. I would go again!

(Translated by Google) The area around the station is a business district lined with buildings housing government offices, corporate branches and sales offices. It is a lively station with many restaurants. In addition, the area is known as "Sahoji" and is home to many famous historical sites, such as the Heijo Palace ruins, Kairyuoji Temple, Hokkeji Temple, Futaiji Temple, Unatarizatakamitama Shrine, Kawaji Sakura on the Saho River, Uwanabe Tomb, Konabe Tomb, and Hishiage Tomb. It is also close to Nara City Hall, JR Nara Station, the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, and Nara Prefectural University. Kintetsu Railway had many problems. One of them was in Nara City, on the Nara Line, which could be said to be the company's main source of income. The shared track between Nara Station and the former Aburazaka Station. The road and the tracks ran on the same level. This hindered speed increases and caused congestion on the road. It was a major safety issue, but no major accidents had occurred. The underground construction was opened in 1969 (the year before the Osaka World Expo). This marked the end of more than half a century of operation on the shared track. Shin-Omiya Station was newly built in the underground section. The history leading up to the completion of this underground construction is an interesting case in considering how railways and cities can coexist. As proof of this, if you Google it, you will find many blogs and papers. This plan is also closely related to the improvement of Saidaiji Station and the above-ground section that runs through the Heijo-kyo ruins. There is still no prospect of a resolution. As of 2025, Shin-Omiya Station has been added to the list of stations where rapid express trains stop, and trains other than limited express trains stop there. Therefore, it is an above-ground station with two opposing platforms and two tracks that can accommodate 10-car trains.

(Translated by Google) This is the nearest station to Nara City Hall. There is a residential area to the north and a restaurant area to the south, with lots of delicious restaurants! It might be a good idea to live near here, as trains other than limited express trains stop here. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is that the station building is a little old, but everything else is perfect! The Nara-bound ticket gate is unmanned, and the stationmaster's office is located on the side of the Namba-bound platform. JR Nara Station is a 10-15 minute walk, and Nara City Hall is about a 10 minute walk. Come to think of it, where was the talk about making the Saidaiji-Kintetsu Nara section underground and moving this station to the City Hall side? There are also Heijo Palace ruins, but I don't think there are any. (This is my personal opinion) (Original)

If the station structure isn't going to be changed, wouldn't it be better to at least put up a warning sign in front of the ticket gates? (Original) 1番のりばと2番のりばで、改札が独立しているため、間違えて入場しても反対側のホームには入れないという初見殺しの駅。 駅の構造を変更しないなら、改札前で注意喚起の表示くらいは行った方が良いのでは??

(Translated by Google) I think it's a major station, but I feel like it's not as appealing as a station. If you are in a hurry, I think it is better for your mental stability to use the underground passage to get to the other side instead of waiting at the railroad crossing. I often have to wait quite a while. (Original) 主要駅だとは思うのですが、駅としての魅力は今一つの気がします。 急いでいる方は、踏み切りで待たずに、地下道を使って反対側に行く方が精神安定上いいと思います。結構待たされること多いので。

Kashiwagi Park is a picturesque green space with a variety of amenities. Visitors can enjoy the tree-lined paths, playground, ball field, and tennis courts. The park is popular among families and sports enthusiasts. On weekends, it tends to get crowded due to various activities like baseball practice and cherry blossom viewing. However, some visitors have raised concerns about the cleanliness of the park's facilities, particularly the restrooms.
(Translated by Google) It was a well-maintained park with a parking lot, restrooms, and vending machines. There are also large trees where you can take a break in the shade. The play equipment is new and large. I went with my 2-year-old child, and he seemed scared of many of the slides because they were steep. Children around 5 years old will probably enjoy it the most. There was also an indoor play area with time shifts, so it was a lecture where everyone from small children to kindergarteners could play. There is free parking and toilets available. There was a lot of play equipment such as slides, rope jungle gyms, sandboxes, slides, and swings, so you could relax. This is a park that I would like to visit again if I have the chance. I thought it would be more convenient if there was a convenience store or takeout store nearby. My grandson just turned 3 years old, so I decided to climb the slide with him (it's a bit expensive). Another child around 2 years old The child lost his balance on the wide slide, so we recommend that the child slide between the parents' legs. The wide slide is uneven. It bounces so it rolls easily. Higashimuki Shopping Street is a covered arcade filled with casual eateries and shops offering souvenirs, clothing, and housewares. Visitors can find unique souvenirs featuring deer or monks, as well as local items like calligraphy brushes and Nara Sarashi fabrics. The street is known for its local delicacies such as Narazuke pickles and kaki-no-hazushi sushi.
A covered shopping street that has food and shopping options. A good place to rest and recover if you are visiting Nara in the heat of summer. This street is located just next to the Kintetsu Nara train station. There are no restrooms here.

This covered shopping arcade is close to Nara Park, and directly beside the Kintetsu-Nara Station. It has a good selection of restaurants and souvenir shops, and is a good option on rainy days. Tends to get crowded in the early evenings, especially on weekends. Still a pleasant experience walking and browsing around here.

Nice area to look around, quite a few second hand shops - there is also a nice shop that repurposes old clothes by turning them into other garments. Lots of pottery bits and local crafts can be found here. Plenty of places to stop and eat. Was a little busy but not too bad, although we came later in the day as we were staying overnight at Nara. Lots of shops seem to start to shut at 6pm.

A great place to shop. I found some second-hand kimono for 1000 yen so I decided to take 4 with me. There are lots of handmade products. Highly recommend these to you.

Higashimuki Shopping Street is located right in front of the east entrance of Kintetsu Nara Station. It has an arcade that runs north-south from Omiya Street to Sanjo Street. Kofukuji Temple is to the east, and private houses were built on the west side of the street. Since all of the buildings were facing east, the town was named "Higashimuki (facing east).” Other than Kofukuji Temple, the street also directly connects to Sarusawa Pond, Naramachi, and Nara Park, where Todaiji Temple is located. This location is convenient to stop by both on your way to and from sightseeing in Nara.

Higashimusi Shopping Market in Osaka is a cozy and nostalgic local market that gives you a glimpse into everyday Japanese life. It’s lined with small family-run shops, snack stalls, and old-fashioned eateries where you can find everything from freshly made street food to daily essentials. The atmosphere feels warm and community-driven, with friendly vendors and a slower pace compared to Osaka’s busy downtown areas. It’s a nice spot to wander, snack, and experience the charm of a traditional neighborhood market away from the tourist crowds.

Good Fresh Food here. Sushi and Sashimi was great for the price, Great Arcade. Also Shout out to the store with the best, yes the best local roasted to perfection Kuromame cha. Follow the Photos and Video for the best Black Bean Tea samples and to buy. It is not on Google maps, it is located away from the train station end. Google should update to include this shop. Very friendly staff and gave free samples of Luxury Black Bean tea. I would buy more online if I could find the store. Arigatou gozaimasu – ありがとう ございます

Naramachi Karakuri Toy Museum, situated in central Naramachi, is a charming museum that showcases traditional Japanese toys. It's not just for kids; visitors of all ages can explore and play with the vintage toys. The friendly staff are available to provide insights into the history and mechanics of the toys. The museum offers a delightful opportunity to experience and learn about toys from an era before digital games and the internet.
10 min south of Kitentsu Nara station is a small toy museum. This is a museum with collection of traditional mechanical toys in Japan. There are a group of people explaining and showing how to play with different toys. One of the guide speak in English to help with detail explanation. He help to explain and demonstrate the toys. Booking is available for a toy making workshop on selected weekend. I have tried a few of the toys and it is fun and interactive. Entry is free. While donation to help the museum is recommended.

I’m 42 and I had so much fun at the Toy Museum. It helped that there were a bunch of friendly kids interested in talking and playing with me but the kind women who work there were so sweet and eager to make sure I enjoyed myself and understood how the very old toys work. All the toys were very clever and one of the women working even played a full game with me. I definitely recommend it if you have kids. It’s free and you can see everything in about 20 minutes.
Alex P — Google review
The kids had a blast! They have English explanations and instructions for each toy, making it easy for the kids to try them out. The staff was also very friendly and helpful. They change the displayed toys every now and then, so it's worth another visit if you're nearby.

An absolutely wonderful place to visit! So glad to have experienced such a fun and friendly place with a wonderfully enchanting cause of restoring 300 year old toys! Had so much fun playing with all the variety of toys and the elderly couple who set up the museum and the English translator were so friendly. So worth the visit. Absolutely free to visit, accepts donations to their cause - no mention or pressure to donate at all, just a little box at the reception area. Loved it so much, glad to have donated. Would definitely visit again.

Best place for trying the classic Japanese games. Even me as an adult enjoyed it so much! This is a must visit place for children and adults alike.

Amazing Place and Staff. There multiple of old Japanese toys you can try and the staffs are so helpful and friendly, one of them even gave us like a private tour around and taught us how all the toys and games work. The best part is the museum is completely free. You can always donate them at the fornt door.

A free exhibit to showcase old Japanese toys, this is a must visit. Hidden in a typical Japanese home, Experience the old era childhood while living in a standard Japanese home. Oh btw Did I forget to say it is free?
Andrew L — Google review
Had so much fun! Probably my favorite place I visited in Nara. It is English friendly and good for both adults and kids! You can interact and play with all the toys they have there. However, there is no gift shop and you can only purchase one toy to take home, which was a little sad. Small place but you could easily spend a half hour or hour at the house.
