The 39 best breakfast and brunch in Nara

Dear Lord. This place is such a rare find. It hits so good, the coffee is a coffee lover's paradise. Please try the set. The cake hits different! Edit: I came back again on 08 May 2025, 2 years after my first trip on 12 Apr 2023. Still hits the spot. It now a pilgrimage every time i come back to Japan.

I stopped by Rokumei Coffee during my trip and it was such a pleasant surprise. The atmosphere is calm, modern, and perfect for relaxing and preparing before visiting Nara Park.

So far this is one of the best coffee in Nara based on my personal reference. Pretty near to Kintetsu-Nara Station, before heading to Nara Park you might want to grab an Iced Latte. ☺️😊

Cannot believe we can find such a gem so close to Nara deer park. The coffee was smooth and taste great, accompanied by a unique taste of croissant. The place also offers some beautiful souvenirs options as well coffee beans for takeaway.

Came here for brunch. Atmosphere is alright. Not a coffee person but the coffee tasted average. Wanted a cup of milk but had to order separately, it's not in the set. Pastry tasted normal too. Scone is pretty bad, they ran out of chocolate scone so I ordered plain scone. But it didn't come with butter/jam, just plain scone???. Croissant is average, not amazing, not worth it for it's price. Brownie is alright. Pastry and drinks is expensive for it's quality.

Best place to start your journey in Nara! Getting breakfast here was the best decision I made when planning our Nara trip. Great coffee paired with amazing flaky buttery croissants! I enjoyed both their french toast croissant & seasonal avocado tomato croissant. Staff was really friendly and you wouldn't have too much issues with ordering in English either. I would definitely come back

I visited Nara and was looking for a coffee shop in the morning. I ordered a hot latte, and my husband had an iced latte. The coffee tasted really good. I also ordered a French toast croissant and a seasonal croissant, both of which were just as delicious as the coffee. The staff gave great recommendations about both the coffee and the pastries. Overall, I was impressed with everything—the coffee, the pastries, and the service. It really made for a great start to the day.

Absolutely incredible food! We chose 4 items, but were so blown away that we went for 3 more. The savoury selection is ABSOLUTELY PERFECT. Plus the prices are surprisingly low. Can't wait to come back!

Vie de France at Nara Station is a convenient bakery serving lots of baked goods, light meals, coffee and desserts. Their baked goods are made just right and perfect for a quick bite. There is limited space inside and tables are small, so this isn't the best place for large groups. If you're taking out, it's perfect. You can grab a tray and select all your baked goods, and they'll either bag them at the counter or put them on a plate depending whether you're eating in or taking out. All major payment methods accepted. The staff are friendly and speak English.

Coffee, smoothies, croisant or bread is awaited for you once you passed the gate at Nara JR STA... Take your time as it takes sometimes to reach the cashier when it is crowded. If you come in a big crowd and eat in, be prepared to sit separately. Coffee and bread taste is ok but not too special too esp considering we can find better one with same price.

Basic chain with pastries and coffee. Big winning point is that it's open at 9am before the local cafes. 10% tax for eating in, 8% for takeaway. 💳 Takes credit card.

Nice bakery located inside the station once you exit your train. They have a lot of pastries to choose from as well as smoothies and coffee. They have little Brazilian cheese breads so definitely get some of those. Staff is friendly and there's lots of seating available and some of the seating areas have USB charging. If you get your pastries to go they'll bag them separately based on the type which was a nice little touch.

I wouldn’t rank this place in the top 20 best breakfast in Japan so I am not sure where the folks who say this place is the best are eating, McDonald’s? The food is nice. I can’t deny that, but it’s not amazing.We both got hot chocolate and the complete crepe which comes with ham eggs and cheese and a salad. It’s the #1 dish, according to the menu. The first hot chocolate came in and then 15 minutes later the second one arrived. We were the only customers in the store. Around 1100. Two new customers arrived while we were waiting for their food and they were not attended to for at least 10 minutes. The crepes themselves also arrived extremely staggered so one of us enjoyed a lukewarm meal. I am attaching a picture of presentation. Last comment the “chef” was sick and coughing all over the restaurant along with sniffles without wearing a mask. We would have left but had already ordered.

Had such a lovely experience here! We’ve been travelling for a while and had a little too much fun with the availability of sweet treats- this savoury crepe was the absolute perfect start to our day, and on recommendation by the owner visited a temple in Nara Park with the most beautiful view over the city. The cafe was very peaceful and we were greatly entertained by the messages left by other travellers on the wall next to us. 100% recommend!

I miss this! The food was delicious! The owner was super cool and very welcoming 🥹 I asked for a song that was played but ofc I asked after it was done … so he didn’t stop looking for it until we found it😭 then he shared his playlist on Spotify🫶 then we vibed! Ate here for lunch on 6/21/25 after visiting Nara Park. We were greeted by the owner, Hiro, and he was truly a nice guy who spoke very good english. Our family ordered the pizza crepe, ham and egg crepe, cinnamon banana crepe w/matcha ice cream, iced matcha lattes, and the Japanese matcha parfait. All of the items were very delicious and reasonably priced. Covid took a toll on Hiro's cafe and he's still trying to recover. Please come and support this wonderful small business.

Excellent crepes, both sweet and salty. We also ordered lattes (chocolate cookie) and it was very tasteful and delicious too! The staff was very polite and welcoming! The worker wearing glasses there was especially nice and accommodating. Upstairs (coffee section) the seats were very comfortable. The place was clean and the mood was pleasant, with a chill atmosphere thanks to a gentle music playing in background. It was also quite calm. Thank you for the food!

Cannot agree with the positive reviews. I had a berry banana and chocolate crepe. The berries were frozen and the crepe cold, so I had to eat them frozen. There was a lot of syrup from a tube (very artificial taste) and the whipped cream was not fresh either. Bad cappuccino. All over bad experience, sorry!

It was a good restaurant. It was good in terms of cleanliness. In terms of variety of food and dessert, very good and you could see an item for every taste. I think pizza was one of the best items. It had a variety of desserts, but you could choose a custom dessert and they would make it for you right there, and you could even use this option for the faza, and they would cook the steak for you, which of course was the only pork option. The strange thing for me was that even though it was a buffet restaurant, you had to pay separately for the soft drink to be able to use it, which was the first time I saw something like this. I had a buffet lunch with my family there on 12-3-2024.After finishing a glass of water, I tried to return the empty glass and get some food. I was stopped at the hot food serving area by a staff member. She noticed I had an empty glass on my tray and misunderstood that I was trying to get their soft drinks, even though I was far away from the drinking machine. I tried to explain to her repeatly that I was not trying to get any drink and only wanted to have something to eat, but they just didn't care and insisted that I had to go to the free drink area and stop me getting any food. When I gave up the glass to them, I was allowed to proceed back to the food serving area. But there was a staff member who kept following me and watching me whenever I picked up anything from the food bench. That made me feel very unpleasant and humiliated. I thought they had assumed that I was trying to steal their drinks because I have an empty glass on my tray. I felt so bad that I could not continue my lunch and just left after my family finished their lunch. Japan's customer service is generally pretty good, so I was pretty shocked and disappointed at this terrible service .

Yummy set meals at reasonable prices. I took my family there on a Monday evening. We ordered from a touch screen (English is provided as an option) and paid, added our name to a waiting list, and shortly we're seated. Food came fast and was very good. Water and hot liquids (soup? I didn't explore it) are self serve. We were all very pleased and hope to eat there again, next time we are visiting Japan.

Great combo meal at an affordable price! The meat were all flavorful and delicious, the burger steak was so juicy. Serving portion was so huge can last the whole day and price was reasonable. Place was packed with locals so it was a great sign. Conveniently located just outside the Nara station.

Very affordable and delicious set meal that’s available early in the morning for breakfast. Added croquette which was really yummy as well. Nothing too fancy but absolutely heartwarming for a soupy rice kind of breakfast set.

3pth August 2025 Came yo Yayoiken Nara Station right after finishing the Pro-wrestling match. The food was quite affordable at around 800 to 1300 yen range for a fulfilling meal. The karaage and tsukemono was very delicious albeit a bit salty ! You can choose the type of rice you'd like, either white or whole grain, like I did. You can refil your rice for free too !! Do come by and try it when you are nearby !

I love McDonald’s it has to be said and because we travel so much I do like to try them in different countries. The Big Mac and chips I had here would beat most of the British ones I have had. The staff as always in Japan are friendly and efficient.

We grabbed a quick lunch at McDonald’s before heading to Nara Park. I ordered the Shrimp Burger, Nuggets, and an Iced Latte—a combination you can never go wrong with! In the Philippines, the Ebi Burger is only available seasonally, so I was thrilled to enjoy it here in Nara, Japan.

Got the tsukimi pie and tsukimi burger. The pie had a nice mix of textures, but it wasn't enough for me to enjoy it. The burger was pretty bland and forgettable. Idk where people are coming from when they say Japan McDonalds is good: honestly maybe I should start going to Lotteria instead now.

There was a big piano in the middle and it was nice to see a quite different menu than the McDonalds in Europe. The Shrimp burger was quite nice and was mostly made of shrimp, you can actually find a lot of complete shrimp pieces in the patty. An English menu is also available. Service was very fast and the staff were friendly but couldn't speak English.

It’s convenient to grab a cup of daily coffee and continue the journey to Kyoto! Not enough table for eating in, so if you need to spend sometime enjoying your coffee and snacks, you might need to reconsider.

So you have your regular Starbucks scattered all over the country, but this one in particular is quite cool due to its location. Located inside the tourist visitor center of Nara, not only can you stop by for a solid beverage of your choice, but you can learn a bit about the city and take a photo with the giant deer mascot the city is famous for. Back to the drinks, I ordered a classic Matcha latte with Oat Milk (LOVE that non-dairy milk is a thing in Japan now) and it just hits different from the ones back in the States. My drink was perfectly refreshing and fitting to boost my energy and travel date in this ancient city.

I only tried their coffee and Matcha latte for to go, it was good. The place looks cozy and the food looks delicious. Hard to find parking around here though, we had to walk a bit far and of course pay for parking.

Great morning breakfast sets to choose from. For only ¥630 you get sandwich, yoghurt, salad and a drink. I got the ham and egg sandwich and it was good. Not enough ham but still ok. The Earl Grey tea was nice. My partner got the same set but with Americano coffee and didn't seem to complain about it.

Comfortable seats and atmosphere that I wouldn't mind spending an hour to read and relax with a cup of coffee. Baskets available for your belongings to go into instead of placing them directly onto the floor. Clean bathroom. There's a little return tray area to return your tray and dishes when you are finished. Serve yourself ice water available also.

Saint Marc Cafe at Sanjo-dori is about 5 minutes walk from the JR Nara Station. The cafe was not crowded and there are plenty of seats in the cafe. The food and drink was good. Prices were reasonable.

+ Breakfast menu ended at 11:00 (just the set breakfast menu not breakfast as whole), and they allowed my partner to still order from the breakfast menu at 11:02. The cookies and cream croissants were delicious. They were sold out of cookies and cream croissants but told us if we waited 15 minutes they would restock, which we did, and it was worth the wait. - Sold out of a lot of things at 11am. My partner first tried to order one of the breakfast menus, and was told it was sold out. He instead ordered a different menu, and we also got 2 cookies and cream croissants, an apple juice, and a cookies and cream latte. This was charged, and after waiting for a while they came over and said the latte was actually also sold out, and refunded me. The apple juice was minuscule, genuinely half the glass had apple juice, it was also filled with ice so I suspect even less apple juice. Would not come back, but the cookies and cream croissants were worth us trying this place out.

Nice looking and clean establishment. Got an "Addictive Cheese Hotdog", a "BLT Sandwich" and an Ice Tea. Tasted great. For a decent price as well. Would absolutely recommend it!

We were excited to try the Japanese chain. Nice vibe, nice flavour, but the burgers were super messy to eat and came apart immediately, though we tried to keep them in the bag. Also bit disappointed with their 'premium' pork and beef mix patty, honestly recall the McDonald's samurai burger patty being thicker. Melon soda was too sweet. Maybe appeal to Japanese tastes.

Their gluten free options are good when you’re in a hurry. We ate the allergen menu burger and hot dog, plus also the French fries and didn’t have any issues.

As I understand, Mos burger is a Japanese burger restaurant chain. We visited the Nara train station branch. Staff was friendly. Plenty of seats inside. Food was more like mediocre. I would recommend to try it though.

The employee there spoke really good English. Had super fast service. I had the Yakiniku burger. They even have a plant based burger, though it's not as good as the plant based burgers back in Canada.

Always wanted to try Mos Burger because of anime. Had the shrimp burger and my boyfriend had the chicken burger. It was good. Service was good too. The place was clean and really liked their music choice :)

It is located on the 1F at JR Nara station. This restaurant has many delicious options in burger, fries, etc. Even they have vegetarian food options, so its good for the vegetarian people. The staff is very cooperative, so its a good experience overall.

Great stop. Introvert’s dream. A little cat robot brought me my food. If you’re traveling from out of the country, this place was absurdly cheap. I think I paid for $8 worth of food but totally filled up, and even had access to unlimited drinks.

Affordable food option in the main touristy area. Service is good, staff were friendly. You go here because you want reasonable food at a fair price so if you go in with that expectation, you'll be sweet. Has a (non alcoholic) drink bar option for around 500 yen which goes alright. You order via the tablet which has a few different language options.

A cosy place to have Japanese-styled, Western-styled breakfast and food.

Very poor management, we waited 1 hour for our food to come! Staff seemed swamped and played came with huge time difference, also for was way below an acceptable standard. If management wasn't too safe cost should look for another way as hiring very few staff is a sure way to lose customers as they have lost us. Don't come here!

We got two steaks, with extra chicken and a drink and it was 4,000 yen. Wasn’t expecting the best steak ever but it wasn’t great and I left a lot of it as was too grissly.

This tonkatsu restaurant is fantastic!!! A great place to grab a good, cheap meal. Only a 2 minute walk from the JR Nara Station. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. The tonkatsu is crispy, flaky and flavourful. Each meal is served with rice, cabbage and miso soup. There are different sauces available for your meal. The restaurant is spacious and very clean. Hand sanitizers are readily available at each table. Take out available. I will definitely be back soon - enjoy 😊!!!

Fresh Bakery made on site that you can actually watch come out of the oven. No, Japanese pastry isn't Dunkin Donuts sweet but this place does offer a cheesecake that can even satisfy an American sweet tooth. Car parking is available but limited.

I frequently go there. Today I tried the new menu Sichuan at Nara Branch. It still a good one as always.

I got the curry rice with beef. It was super weird and oily, did not taste good at all. There were also two hairs inside. The table was also disgusting, there was some rice on the table, likely from a previous customer. DO NOT COME HERE

Matsuya is a restaurant where good tasting food meets great value. This chained restaurant offers a wide variety of dishes. What I like about this restaurant are the monthly specials - each month they offer an unique or seasonal dish from Hamburg with cheese in tomato sauce to chicken curry. The service here is fantastic - the servers are friendly and your order is prepared quickly. Each table has an array of sauces and spices for your meal. As well, there are hand sanitizers at each table and the entrance. There is a lot of parking available and is only a 5 min walk from the Nara JR Station. Open 24 hours a day and take out is available. No English menu but it’s easy to order food from the pictures.

REALLY GOOD DEALS! there are set menu for breakfast that are really cheap and the food is really good, the food came quickly! although you should know that it is a self-service type of place!

My personal favourite go-to place for Cheese Gyudon compared to Yoshinoya and Sukiya. The cheese and meat have magical synergy that makes me go "Mmmmmm" everytime.

Great little gem not far from the station. We ordered the roast beef and chicken and they were delicious. You can feel the care and dedication from the chef. Well done team Cafe Tanne.

Sad to say, but it's a tourist trap! Way overpriced, slow service. "Cheese cake" was a small sliver of gelatin pudding and it took five minutes to receive a cup of lukewarm coffee although I was the only customer. The sign outside read "11:30–17:00 Lunch & cafe", but they had stopped serving lunch by 15:45. It's my fault I didn't check the reviews before entering. I felt like they didn't even try. Quiet cafe in a quiet town. I visited around 6pm on a weekday and the customers who were there just before me ordered the last 2 buttermilk pancakes. The pancakes are the specialties in this cafe. The master brought it to backyards, and a few mins later he offered me new pieces of bun that was perfectly cooked. In addition that, he asked me if he should recook everything all over again, but said it's ok for me with just new buns. Not only that he awaited me outside the restaurant and gave me some gratitude for giving him opportunity to improve the shop operation. I've never seen such a sincere employee in any restaurants. Above information is for hoping as many customers as possible would be able to know that the shop was very serious on improving service and had very honest attitude toward customers. 5 stars for anyone who wants to know good hospitality of a Japanese restaurant.

If you like pancakes or toasted sandwiches for breakfast then this is the place to go. It's delicious and well priced. Plus my tea cup was gorgeous. Our food was delicious, the service was great and the location is on the way to the deer park. I highly recommend you have breakfast 🥞 there.

A well balanced coffee blend and perfectly frothed milk made the flat white I ordered so good that I came back again on my way back to buy their in house coffee blend and order another cup of coffee which was equally good. They were also very helpful when I showed the Halal card and asked about the ingredients of their desserts and for that I also got to try their delightful Orange Madeline and Pecan Financier. Many coffee places in Japan, especially in touristic areas, are pushing it with the tag (often more expensive than London)

Exceptional service here at Chomi, and aesthetically stunning. It doesn’t get better in terms of atmosphere and the details that they put into their craft. Their coffees, matcha, and assortment of gorgeous canapés and confections are all delicious. I wish I could try them all!

We were just looking at the map and this place popped up close to our hotel and I am so glad we went! It is a lovely shop and a great selection of coffees and treats. We enjoyed some of their selection coffees and a wonderful cheese cake.
