Bodies of Water
Lake Towada, the largest crater lake in Honshu, is a picturesque destination nestled in Aomori Prefecture. Visitors can enjoy a day hike through the lush Oirase Gorge and explore the serene shores of Lake Towada with a licensed guide. The area offers stunning natural landscapes, including vibrant fall foliage and a famous sculpture on display. Excursion boats provide an opportunity to admire the colorful autumn leaves from the water.
Lovely lake. It’s so huge I thought it’s part of the sea 😂 Nice views! I took the cruise!

Lovely spot, with really big waves on the day of my visit🌊🌊🌊

Really worth the trip. We’re glad we had a rental car to make quick pit stops along the meanders and parking points. Really a life saver and worth the trip. Just ensure you start with a full tank of petrol. Have enough water in hand. Some insect repellent might help if you choose to use it. And a good camera !
Sakthi B — Google review
Beautiful lake and surroundings, a few hikes. Very natural and great. The one thing we didn't like is that it looked half abandoned and it was very inactive, all restaurants were closed and a lot of hotels/visitor centres were closed. That was in early July, we learnt afterwards that the high season there is autumn, but we would have liked to have more options for dinner close by.
Marie-Laure S — Google review
A fairly large lake in Honshu. Boats are available to explore the lake, and the lakeshore is a suitable location for camping and outdoor activities.

Great visit. though Towada lake is famous for its depth in Japan, I don't know how beautiful its water and view is.you need to drive and get there before sunset.I also went there at night and shady darky lake was also great.you can also go fishing there although I don't know what you can get there.anyway, you have to get there!

Thanks to my Japanese sister again for driving us from Hachinohe to Lake Towada each time my relatives and my colleagues visited Hachinohe. We were there April 2016, July 2017 and May 2019. Lake Towada is the biggest crater lake situated in Japan main island, Honshu. Along the way up to Lake Towada, we will pass the Oirase stream trail and Towada City. We will stopped at Oirase stream to take pictures of the waterfalls such as Kumoi waterfall, Choshi Otaki, Ashura Current, and Kujukushima, these are just a few of the many popular waterfalls and scenes in Oirase Gorge. Many visitors and photographers try their hand at taking the best picturesque shot. If you come in Autumn, you would see all the trees that lined the Oirase stream turn into golden colors which I miss so far. Will go there in Autumn, the next trip...

Oirase Stream is a 14km long waterway that offers a serene and picturesque setting with its lush greenery, dynamic flow of water, and various streams and waterfalls. The stream originates from Lake Towada, creating a calming yet powerful ambiance as it splashes against the rocks. Visitors can enjoy the negative ions in the air while walking along wooden paths that have been installed along the stream.
A mesmerizing bouquet of spectacular natural beauty !! I went in November and the gorgeous gorge & vibrant neon Fall colors were simply incredible. The road thru the gorge follows a lovely river (with hiking trail alongside) with exceptionally exquisite scenery and wonderful waterfalls aplenty. Lots of small pullouts to park and take pics. I went on the weekend during peak Fall color season and it was pretty busy with lots of cars, hikers, bikers, people and tour buses. Still had an amazing time, my tip for you would be try to hit it early during a weekday if possible :)
Shane R — Google review
You have to come early to ensure there is parking available. It takes about an hour to walk from this store to the first falls. Better to wear walking shoes instead of sandals. Very nice place. 7/5/25
Sake S — Google review
A gorgeous natural path with a crystal-clear stream. During my October 2025 visit, the autumn colors were beginning, and the rushing water made the view magnificent. Wear sneaker (hiking or athletic shoes) for an easy walk. Parking is available, and on quieter days, you can sometimes park in the marked areas along the road.
Chatchamon I — Google review
Visited by car in mid October 2025. Chose to park at ishigedo and walking to lake towada, before taking the shuttle bus back. Took about 4 hours as we often stopped to take in the amazing scenery and calming surround sound of running (and often gushing water). Having visited Gembeiki and geibiki gorge earlier in my northern Japan trip, I must say this is my favourite by a large margin. The videos speak for themselves. I particularly liked the kumoi no taki waterfalls where u could get really close to the waterfall. The crowd was also manageable - though im aware it’s not quite peak autumn season yet, with the leaves only yellow not red. The only parts I didn’t quite enjoy was some sections especially closer to lake towada where u have to walk along the road near cars. Also, some fellow tourists attach bells on their bags (probably to ward off bears) which could break the serenity of the nature reserve, but overall it was still a great experience. The shuttle bus was also very convenient - could pay via Suica.
Shihao F — Google review
This is a must-visit tourist attraction for anyone looking to fully immerse themselves in nature. It's fantastic that visitors can drive their cars along the route during the visiting season. However, I strongly advise checking the seasonal road closure periods in advance to plan your trip wisely. The scenery is breathtaking, offering a wonderfully calm, fresh, and beautiful atmosphere. Note that while some spots draw crowds, other areas remain beautifully tranquil. Finally, be sure to arrive early, as the sun sets surprisingly fast here!
NNchan — Google review
Amazing autumn view. Nice and easy walking trails , you can spot waterfalls along the river. Very crowded bus during autumn season with chinese tourist which is very annoying and talk loudly
Jovie J — Google review
It's 14km if you wish to walk the entire route. Most tourist get off the shuttle at Ishigedo stop to start walking and it gets crowded. Having done this, I would get off at Kumoi no Falls and walk back to Nonekuchi final stop. More peaceful and scenic. And get there early, to park at Nonekuchi.
T N — Google review
This is a stunning gorge with a beautiful stream flowing through it which has many rapids and waterfalls. There is a nice easy walking path along a lot of it and plenty of places to stop and park so you can just walk parts of it!

Art Museums
The Towada Art Center is an avant-garde museum showcasing contemporary art and featuring quirky outdoor installations, as well as a complex of galleries. It's a great family-friendly destination in the area, with impressive blue LED light displays during winter that need to be seen in person for full appreciation. The museum hosts diverse artists from around the globe, offering amusing works for those who enjoy humorous art pieces. However, public transportation may not be very convenient or time-efficient; driving oneself would be more ideal.
The sculpture out there are amazing, and the indoor exhibitions are brilliant as well. They provide audio tour guide without extra charge. They also got a brochure to introduce the artworks and map briefly.
Hahaha T — Google review
I really like this museum. The aunty jump scared me a little. There are plenty of art pieces outside the museum and also around the area but pleas don’t hesitate to pay to see what’s inside. The experience is not the same as only seeing the photo reviewed. It was an amazing art center!!!!!!!
Julin L — Google review
A highly recommend place to visit. The exhibits inside are great and is detailed annotated with multi language hearing aim. Definitely needed to bring along with the map that recommending the route of your tour. The excellence of this art center is it's exhibits extended to the outdoor and to the park at the opposite street. A large free carpark also convenience for the visitor.
Chuen — Google review
The museum offers a lovely experience, with both impressive indoor and outdoor collections that can easily take over two hours to explore. While the city itself is small and has limited attractions, driving there is recommended as it’s more convenient than using public transportation.
Uno L — Google review
A bunch of large-scale installation art pieces by internationally known artists. Really unique space. Larger collection than I thought before entering the museum. Some artworks are also outdoors. Spent a few hours here. Majority of the gallery spaces and the cafe were ground-level. I noticed a wheel-chair user visiting the museum.
Shae I — Google review
Do make a trip here if you are in Aomori. Worth 2hrs of your time. Be amazed.
Vince C — Google review
I had checked a few months in advance and noted that the museum is closed only on Mondays, so I planned my itinerary accordingly. We visited on a Tuesday and were disappointed to find that it was closed, and several other visitors were let down as well. I checked the website again on the spot and saw that it had been updated to show it was closed that day. I have since learned to reconfirm key information closer to the travel date to avoid similar situations. The whimsical sculptures surrounding the museum were still fun to explore, nonetheless.

Hakkōda Mountains, a group of stratovolcanoes and lava domes, offer a range of activities such as skiing, hiking, and hot springs. Visitors can also enjoy an aerial cable car ride to take in the breathtaking views. The area is home to a Scandinavian-style resort hotel nestled amidst primeval Japanese beech forests. The scenic beauty of Hakkoda changes with the seasons, offering stunning autumn colors and starry night skies that soothe both body and mind.
I used to travel to Hakkoda every winter when I lived in Japan. Probably here you can find the smoothest snow powder in the world. Really fun to go down in the wild of Hakkoda. You need to know there was once severe training session by Japanese military having left a lot of dead bodies. The beautiful great wild is not only attractive but also dangerous to those who love being in nature.
Kara A — Google review
We only went around at the lower part of the Hakkoda mountain and yet it was already really beautiful. Luckily this part has already had some autumn colours while the rest of Aomori is still very green. Would love to spend more time here without the kids.

This is my ultimate zen spot! Whenever I'm in Aomori, you can bet I'll be heading straight there. The powder for snowboarding is simply unbeatable, and the mountains themselves are breathtaking. Just a heads up though, keep an eye out for the occasional wild black bears and the unpredictable blizzards. Other than that, it's pure bliss up there!

Towada Shrine is a serene Shinto shrine located on the Nakayama Peninsula near Lake Towada. It was founded in 807 and is known for its tranquil, wooded surroundings. The shrine's main buildings, set amidst a cedar grove, exude a sense of majesty and create a peaceful atmosphere. Visitors often describe it as one of the most serene shrines they have ever visited.
This shrine is gorgeous and peaceful. There's free parking on the street and then a paid parking lot nearby. It's an easy walk. And the woods are peaceful.
Dani D — Google review
5-10 mins walk direct from the parking lot to visit the shrine and another 10-15 mina on the way back via lake side walking route with photo taking. Great view. Nice and peaceful shrine.
Antonio O — Google review
It was a tiny & wonderful shrine dedicated to the dragon god. The design of the goshuin (temple seal) was also lovely. I recommend stopping by on your way to the Maiden Statue.
Yuriko H — Google review
Paid parking lot is 500 yen. If you can find a street parking you should try. From the paid parking lot the shrine is 4-500 meters away. After visiting the shrine, walk to the left of the shrine. There is an obvious footpath to the wood which leads to the lake and a statue. After the lake, you don’t have to walk back there is a footpath along the lake back to the shop/parking lot area. Walking along the lake is quite nice too. It was freezing cold when I visit the shrine. I didn’t bother taking my hands out of my pocket to take the photo.
Julin L — Google review
Easy to reach, both by stairs in front and small path in the back.
Samvel K — Google review
Small but beautiful shrine set on a peninsula in the lake. In January it was mostly deserted. Which suited us. Needed good shoes for the short walk through the snow and climb a short set of steps. The shrine is manned and the resident had a nice outdoor fire going. We prayed and purchased a goshuin and omimore. Nearby is a beautiful little island with shrines and the famous maiden statue. Several of the tourist shops/restaurants we're surprisingly still open, including food. Apple and dango mostly. We saw a wild Kitsune (fox) nearby that made the visit feel auspicious.
Douglas A — Google review
Great day trip. Visit the forest and the shrines and then walk along the lake to soft server ice cream

Visited Towada Lake with Akita Inaka School! Sayaka showed us around the Towada Lake and the Towada shrine. Really like the environment the shrine is in! There are prayer instructions in English and I heard that throwing in 5 yen is lucky!

Hakkōda Ropeway Sanroku Station is the starting point for a gondola ride that ascends a forested peak, offering stunning views of the Hakkoda Mountain Range. The 2.5km journey climbs 650m up Mount Tamoyachi, providing panoramic vistas of Aomori city, Mutsu Bay, Tsugaru Peninsula, Shimokita Peninsula and Mount Iwaki on clear days.
This is an introduction to the ski trails that descend from the top of the mountain via the Hakkoda cable car (gondla). There are two trails from the summit on the ropeway: the Forest Trail and the Direct Trail. The boundaries of both trails are marked with banboo poles, so you don't need avalanche gear as long as you ski through them. However, if you cannot resist the temptation to ski outside the poles, should have them and do so at your own risk. Superb views, fantastic snow quality, exhilaration and openness. The best ski runs you won't experience anywhere else. One of the best snow resorts, except for the windy days and frequent gondola cancellations.
Shige S — Google review
Lots of tourists arriving in buses, and the queue to use the Ropeway is long. I arrived in the morning and had to wait 1 hour to use the Ropeway after buying the ticket. The views on the way up are amazing as the gondola slowly goes up. The views from the top are amazing, especially the autumn colours when I visited. There are multiple hiking trails at the top that range from 30 mins to hours. Each trail will offer stunning views.
Neo C — Google review
Came expecting vibrant autumn leaves and left with beautiful snow-capped memories The Ropeway in Aomori is an absolute must-do. It boasts an awesome and unforgettable view and runs with a highly efficient management system, handling the large volume of tourists with ease. The staff were very active and helpful, ensuring a great atmosphere. The most surprising part of my visit (on October 24, 2025) was expecting autumn leaves but being treated to a beautiful, unexpected blanket of early season snow! It made for a very unique and memorable experience.
NNchan — Google review
Visited on end Oct 2025. Suggest to go to other places instead. price is 2200yen per person and since it is almost end of autumn, the top of the mountain is pretty chilly and windy. We cannot walk around the top of mountain as it is covered with ice and snow. So, basically only stay there for less than 5 minutes to take a quick snapshot and then return back to the base station. I would suggest for those coming during these time (end Oct 2025-early Nov 2025), to go to the nearby attraction - famous bridge instead. That bridge is free and view is spectacular. Many people went up and spent 5-10 mins. One very small shop and no food up there at this time.

6/Apr/2025: Though the team down the city is around 10c; snows up on the mountains still there and several people still comes to snowboarding. A nice view up there after get off from the ropeway station.

Just beautiful. The chairlift is nice with great views.. Bur the walk up to see the mountain are better. Nice and easy walkway.. there is no way of getting lost.. Just chexk the weather that its not raining befor you go... If its muddy - there are grealy good boots to borrow- for free.
Michal A — Google review
Visited 25th October during autumn colours, and it was really pretty! The gondola ran every 15 mins when I visited, and the ride was pretty packed on both ways. Once you're up there's 2 routes you can hike, 30 min route and an hour route. When I went the route was already covered by thin cover of ice making it slippery at points so it took us longer. Best to have proper clothing and shoes if hiking, but also saw other groups just taking pictures close to the ropeway then taking the next one down. The round trip cost 2000 yen pp, and there's free parking on site.

Towada City has long been a thriving hub for Nanbu horse production, and in the Meiji era, it even housed a warhorse supplement division. The park features Shotoku-kan, a museum dedicated to showcasing the rich culture and history associated with Nanbu horses. Visitors can also enjoy feeding and riding these magnificent creatures in the pastures, as well as indulge in free play at the expansive playgrounds and exhilarating roller slides.
Great for the children and family. The play equipment is fun for children from 2-4 year olds. Also children able to pet and feed the horses.

Looking for another family friendly activity while traveling through Aomori, make sure that you make a stop right here. Your kids and yourself can enjoy interacting with local horses. It doesn’t matter if you just want to do a little ride or feeding carrots 🥕 You can also visit their stables. I am sure your kids wouldn’t want to miss sliding down from a very long slider from the top of the hill here. It looks super fun!

About a 30 minute drive from Misawa AB and totally worth it! It was soooo fun and the kids LOVED it! They have one very Long one and a shorter covered one perfect for the very little ones. You can pay 100 yen and get carrots to feed the horses. (Translated by Google) 4/27 I went to see the cherry blossoms. They were starting to fall, but they were still in full bloom. The wind was strong, and it was a tremendous cherry blossom storm. Apparently the cherry trees were planted over a period of 10 years, starting in 1985, but the branches were quite impressive. Unfortunately, the cherry trees were planted on the outside of the sidewalk (the building side), but the pine trees were planted on the inside of the sidewalk (the road side), so it's difficult to take good photos. I wonder how wonderful it would be if cherry trees were planted on the inside of the sidewalk (the road side). I walked about 1.1km from the front of the joint government building to Michinoku Bank, but the cherry blossoms in front of the joint government building are the best. There aren't many restaurants on this street, and it's not that prosperous, but it seems to be the main street of Towada City. The atmosphere is nice, and I personally like this street very much. You can park your car around there, so it's very convenient (probably). I parked at the joint government building.

The Oirase Field Museum, located on the Towada Highway, is more of an adventure center than a traditional museum. It offers a coffee shop, snack area, and souvenir shop where visitors can learn about the natural beauty of Towada Hachimantai. The facility also provides electric bikes for rent to explore the surrounding area. Accessible via JR Bus from Shin-Aomori Station and Hachinohe Station, it's a convenient stop for those visiting Oirase Gorge.
You can buy many kinds of souvenirs here, observe mosses with microscopes and magnifying glasses, and rent bicycles... This is definitely a recommended starting point or resting place when touring the Oirase!

End Oct 2025. Nice surroundings and near the start of Oirase river where u can see two rivers merging. The shop itself is small and limited seats for in-house snacks. I walked to the bridge where I can see two rivers merging. Free parking and spacious.

This location conveniently serves as both a Tourist Information Center and a fascinating small museum. The museum section is excellent for curious minds, particularly children, offering detailed illustrations on nature—from basic microscope use to in-depth visuals of plants and animals. It's a highly educational and practical stop for visitors.

When I drive to Lake Towada, I always stop here! There is a gift shop, limited menu snack bar. Soft serve ice cream with chocolate glaze and covered in Matcha green tea! Awesome! Please stop in. A local artist, wooden bowls, cups, utensils! Naturally I buy! Lol

I always love vising the museum! There are a lot of fun activities such as moss ball and terrarium making classes, information about local wildlife and history of the gorge. There is also an A La Ringo store to stock up on yummy apple goodies and treats!

Came here to start my Oirase gorge walk. Dropped my luggage in the coin locker (it was empty). The cafe sells apple pies, which is just okay for me because it’s very tart and the crust is very thin. Toilets are clean and modern with bidet. Ample parking. Took the JR bus from Aomori to get here and then back to Towada city. There’s some apple souvenirs sold inside as well.

Ishigedo Kyuukeijo Rest Area is a fantastic starting point for your adventure in Oirase Gorge. With convenient bicycle rental options available, you can easily explore the area by cycling one way and returning via another route. While electric bikes are offered, many prefer the standard city bikes for a more traditional experience. The scenic trails alongside the stream provide breathtaking views of various waterfalls, making it an ideal escape from summer heat.
This place is great to get access to the oirase gorge. The place has a clean toilet. Parking was difficult even on a week day. The momiji colors were spectacular

There is a nice visitor center and a large clean toilet at this location. Visitors can park their car here and take the trail towards Lake Towada which is up slope. There are some 50 parking spaces on both side of the road. The other direction starting from Lake Towada is probably easier. There are buses from Aomori and Hachinohe I believe so you can take the bus here, walk for 4 hours and then go back. I have included some photo of the local bus timetable. Do note that the timetables were at a bus stop about 2 km from here. There is a shop selling snacks, drinks and Ramen at this visitor center which is super convenient. Price is quite reasonable. But I will suggest you bring your own snack and packet lunch just in case. There is a small exhibit area inside the visitor center displaying the avifauna of this region. Good to have a good but you'll need google translate to understand

Visitors rave about the stunning views surrounded by vibrant foliage, making it a picturesque setting for exploration. Even when weather conditions aren't ideal, Guriland's beauty shines through.
Very special way to explore the lake lead by experienced guide, the whole trip was really exciting! And it was really kids friendly, even my young boys did enjoy so much. Will come back again in October to see maple bloom!

We did a combination rib boat then paddled canoes around part of the protected part of the lake, which is only accessible from the water. It is an area sacred to the Ainu people. The guides were lovely, one spoke English and had just been to Australia! Note that you will climb into the canoes on the water from the rib boat, but the guides are great at making it easy to clamber between them.

Towada-Hachimantai National Park is a hidden gem in the northern reaches of Honshu, easily accessible from Tokyo via Shinkansen. This stunning park is characterized by its majestic volcanoes, serene crater lake, and rejuvenating hot springs. The centerpiece, Lake Towada, is Japan's third deepest crater lake, encircled by lush mountains and serving as the source for the picturesque Oirase Mountain Stream.
Lived in Aomori before and recently visited to do this hike again! It's a nice trail, not too challenging (there are stairs though) and there isn't many people. There is also an onsen nearby. Beware of bears as there is a sign at the beginning to proceed with caution. Perhaps bringing a bear bell is playing it safe. Otherwise, nice little hike!

Hoshino Resort Aomoriya Motoyu is a popular onsen hotel conveniently located near JR Hachinohe Station and Misawa Airport. The irori lounge area seamlessly blends traditional Japanese and modern decor, providing a cozy space for guests to relax. The onsen itself offers a serene atmosphere with its stone bath overlooking a tranquil garden adorned with lanterns. While the facility may be compact, it tends to be less crowded, especially during weekdays.
Great Japanese onsen experience. No additional charge for hotel guests.

My favorite onsen in the Misawa area. It's a little small, but isn't usually very busy, especially on week days. ¥450 gets you access to the onsen and it includes shampoo, soap, and hair dryers. You can bring your own towels, or rent them for an additional fee. It's one large stone bath that looks out to a garden with some lanterns.

450yen, you can tell this is more of a luxury onsen. They provide shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. The set up is very clean and very nice and relaxing. Just one big bath but it’s very nice. Only thing that could make it a little better is some other options for baths. Overall great experience

The entrance and bath windows remain the same, but the interior has been tastefully renovated. The water is alkaline, with a slippery, warm texture. The atmosphere was very relaxing. The adult fee of 450 yen is cheap! I was surprised that amenities such as shampoo were provided. visited 睡莲沼suirennuma on 29.10.2023 very beautiful thermal pond now austere beauty lol! wish it was peak autumn
Chefquak — Google review
It's okay. It's not a must see location. Just a small pond with a walkway and deck overlooking it. It's usually very busy, especially in autumn. So that takes away from any peacefulness. There is a bathroom here. The road is slightly wider so cars can park, but when it's busy it's common for people to keep parking along the narrow part of the road and it becomes hard to drive past. One good thing, in the winter after the Gold Route is open, you can go up the stairs and stand on top of the snow wall here. That's what made me give it 4 stars rather than 3.

Hakkoda Ski Area is a popular winter sports resort in Aomori Prefecture, offering intermediate slopes and off-piste routes with stunning views of Aomori and Mt. Iwaki. The resort is renowned for its unique natural phenomenon known as snow monsters or juhyo, where trees are covered with heavy snow and ice, creating a beautiful and eerie spectacle during the winter season.
Very nice place and a really beautiful winter with deep, soft snow. But you should be prepared for some things: 1) Road can be closed due to weather conditions 2) Upper lift often can be closed to weather conditions, and the upper slope on the top of the mountain is only applicable to experienced people 3) Your credit cards are useless here 4) No shops/restaurants in this area. Only one restaurant is working near the chair lift till 17:00 5)

Winter Beware: the climate changes really quickly. Under blizzard/heavy snowfall or strong winds the ropeway is closed. The ropeway tickets are about 2200yen for a 2 way ticket, and expert skiers and snowboarders can purchase a one way ticket and ski down. However most of the paths down are off piste with large trees and surrounding tree wells. Wouldn’t recommend beginner skiers from coming down the top of the rope way. The ropeway ride is 20 mins and under poor conditions it’s a complete white out. There’s only a small stall with few souvenirs at the top, under poor conditions or visibility I do not recommend purchasing a ticket to go up.
Desmond — Google review
Nice place if you want to ski here, becarefull of strong wind tough
Suwondo L — Google review
Powder snow here is so perfect!! The ticket might seem a bit pricey for the gondola, BUT it’s worth it. The runs are super long. The forest run is really amazing. Bought a pass good for six runs but I only got through three! 😅 This was my first time powder skiing and there is a bit of a learning curve, it’s different than normal snow skiing.
Reagan B — Google review
Important: the Hakkoda Ski Area is NOT related to the Hakkoda Ropeway. The Ski Area is a small bunny hill with an antiquated two-seat chairlift. The Ropeway is a tourist sight-seeing gondola primarily that happens to allow skis and snowboards onboard in the winter. The terrain it gives access to is NOT a ski resort, it is "at your own risk" unmanaged wild mountain forest (with two hiking trails that provide a somewhat skiable path down in the winter). Do NOT attempt to ski or snowboard here if you are not above intermediate in skill and physically fit, especially on storm days. There are annual fatalities and regular next-day rescues. There is no "resort" here either. It is just this small ski station and the sight-seeing gondola.
Boris A — Google review
The gondola is very efficient and the view is absolutely gorgeous once you get to the top. They have some rentals near the ski school and the regular chairlifts. The chairlifts are nice and provide good access to the easier shorter routes. There are only 2 routes other than the slalom course they offer. The routes are really nice to help warmup before going up the gondola of you need to. There was plenty of snow and even some fresh snow falling when I went. Definitely a good place if you want to do some backcountry skiing/snowboarding. The direct route is very well marked with orange poles and numbered signs. I'm slightly above the beginner level and enjoyed the direct route. It is doable as a beginner but it is definitely going to be a bit difficult and I'd recommend taking it slow. I will definitely be back to do some more snowboarding!!
Alex B — Google review
This is a tiny ski area and the snow isn't that good (mid February). In the early morning it's icy and in the afternoon it's heavy and slushy. There's only a very slow, very old two seater. There are also no beginner or advanced slopes, it's all intermediate. The lift and rental price are high considering what you're getting. The gondola is completely separate. The local slopes offer a much better deal. Alternatively, Ani Ski Resort is cheaper, much bigger, and the full day pass includes the gondola. Sometimes the JSDF practice here. There were around 50 of them across all three runs. So there's actually a good amount of traffic on the slopes. To top it off, most of the staff also weren't friendly and treated customers coldly.

(Translated by Google) I've been there about three times because I can play even on rainy days, but because of bureaucratic work, I was not allowed to enter even though I arrived a little earlier than the scheduled time. Even so, when it was time to leave, they started turning off the lights, tidying up if there were people there, and kicking them out. Since we are dealing with small children, of course they will be fussy, tell them to go to the toilet, and I honestly would prefer that they not be staff who have never raised children before. The staff who are watching over them play games while looking at their smartphones. Also, I don't mind that the rooms are divided into two, but why do I have to go to the reception desk to get a new card? Even if I say I want to go over there, the reception desk is far away, so it's just a hassle. Why not make it possible to use both with one card? Perhaps because it's a facility designed by Kengo Kuma, it has a very stylish atmosphere, but most of the room where crawling children are is a hill full of steps. This building certainly does not have the dignity or intimidating feeling of a public building. deliberately excluded. There is a fee for parking, but 30 minutes are free, which is helpful if you want to tour Kengo Kuma's architecture. Personally, I'm not a big fan of Kengo Kuma's architecture, but I was impressed by the way the space was used inside the building. However, there were miscellaneous items placed in the spaces inside the building, making it feel cluttered. I think this is an example of how the lack of awareness and sense on the part of managers, which is sometimes seen, ruins precious architectural spaces. Towada City has been building buildings designed by popular and famous architects one after another, attracting attention from architecture students and architecture fans from all over the country. Citizen Plaza Toilet is also visited by visitors who come to see the building itself. Of course, this building is not just for display, but for practical purposes. However, I think managers need to recognize that they are required to be aware of things other than practical use. Towadakohan Sakura is a newly reopened hotel located near Toda and Lake Winter Story venue. The rooms are spacious and new, offering self-service check-in and check-out. Guests can enjoy dinner, late-night snacks, breakfast, and hot spring baths. The hotel boasts a premium youth concept with comfortable amenities and good quality ingredients. It's conveniently close to the JR bus stop in winter.
Check in was done online which they emailed the link in advance. The room rate was on the higher side but then it was in peak autumn colours period and also the place was pleasantly renovated vs other accommodation in the area. Love that you can open the window wide to let in fresh air and enjoy the autumn colours. Dislike but bearable with the tiny toilet and bathtub/shower.

A little gem in the town. Great room with lake view, spacious, neat and equipped with every tourist's necessity. The lobby is a chilling place, good ambience. Dinner is also a surprise. Beef are yummy with abundant vegetables. Front line staff are amiable and helpful. Special thanks to the male staff who made every effort to settle the pickup arrangement of my next hotel. Highly recommend this place.

After checking in, you can see a very beautiful lake view in the lobby. Whether in the room or in the lobby, sitting in front of the window and looking at the calm lake is very relaxing. Because it is a newly renovated hotel, the facilities are very good, but there is a pungent smell in the elevator. Breakfast and dinner are OK, but the taste is not as good as expected. I hope it will be better after the renovation!

Please don’t come here if you’re on vocation. My family feel like being deceived by the owner. The name of the accommodation sounded like an onsen ryokan but in fact everything is self service and there were only 4 staffs throughout this premise and no staff at all after 12:00 midnight. We have to cook our own meal, tidy up all the pots and utensils and even make our own beddings during our stay. The counter staff were very slow and unproductive. The dinner is fast food quality only and the breakfast is just unappetising. There were only plain bread, cheese and ham available. It is not a real onsen. They merely provide hot water treated with some chemical powder for the hot bath, why my father had very dry skin after the hot bath

I just wrapped up the coziest stay at Towadakohan Sakura—seriously, it feels like a home away from home! The lake view from my room was breathtaking, and I genuinely appreciated how they set up a little DIY breakfast station each morning. Whipping up my own sandwich while soaking in that lake scenery made morning time feel special. Huge thanks to the team at Sakura for thinking of all the little touches that turned this trip into something I’ll always remember—perfect way to recharge before diving back into the real world!

I have never stayed in such a bad hotel. I was unable to sleep due to the noise from a certain equipment all night long, and the response to the front desk staff did not improve it. In the middle of the night, I tried to contact the staff again and asked to change rooms, but the staff could not be found. My vacation was ruined. I didn’t sleep and didn‘t have the energy to drive and continue the trip because I was worried about crashing and hurting my family. I spent time and money to fly come to Japan, but the result was infuriating.

Choshi Falls is a natural wonder located along Oirase Gorge. At first glance, it may appear man-made due to a pillar-like rock at its center, but it's purely nature's creation. The area offers great opportunities for photography and hiking, with narrow walking paths that add to the adventure. Visitors are advised not to approach the falls closely as it is a no-entry zone.
What a beautiful river. Walk along the river side, enjoy the sound of nature. Life is so good. You should be here if you come to visit Japan. It's my first time come to Japan. I love it.

Won L — Google review
I visited Chosi Falls on Friday afternoon 31st October 2025. I accessed the falls by parking my car at Ouse parking area and catching the shuttle bus to the falls. During busy periods cars are not allowed to travel down the gorge road to Lake Towada. The shuttle bus ticket is 1500 yen per day for unlimited trips which is a good way to see the best areas without having to walk the entire gorge which is 14km. There were many people at the falls but there was still opportunity to get photos without people in them. The Autumn colours were at their peak as was the flow of the falls. Friday night it rained heavily, the shuttle bus was cancelled on Saturday 1st November and the gorge was closed at the top end. I decided to drive the road over the mountain to Lake Towada, which was spectacular in its own right, and hike the gorge track from the lake end. The weather had kept people away and I was completely by myself on the track for the 4 hour journey to Kumoi falls and back with ample time to stop with my camera and tripod to capture the beauty of the Autumn colours.

(Translated by Google) These are sister waterfalls. There is a big difference in the amount of water between the left and right sides, making them sisters. The right side is now wider than before, but the left side seems to have narrowed to the point where it is barely noticeable from a distance. It's possible that there wasn't that much of a difference in the past. Waterfalls use the power of water to carve rocks, so a waterfall with a large volume of water has a stronger ability to carve rocks. Although it may not be easy to say because of the strength of the rock, it is only natural that the flow of the waterfall will change after 50 years.

Tsutanuma Marsh is a stunning natural attraction in Aomori, Japan, known for its beautiful autumn reflections. The area is also famous for festivals like Aomori Nebuta Matsuri and Hirosaki Neputa Matsuri, offering a mix of natural beauty and cultural experiences.
The truth is I don't want to share information about this place, I want to keep it a secret. If I had to choose between the Oirase Stream and this swamp, I would choose this swamp without hesitation. The essence of this place is not the landscape that appears in the photographs. You actually enter this space to feel the full presence of plants, insects and birds that stimulate your senses. If possible, we recommend walking the 'swamp tour' trail alone, quietly, as if you were meditating. However, don't forget to wear a bear-proof bell!It can be a very dangerous place.

Beautiful autumn reflection view. But must be there BEFORE the sunrise as the platform gets very crowded and the vibrancy of the colors are mainly coming from angle of the rays during sunrise. If you go later, the colors will not be so vibrant. If you are using tripod, please be aware that the platform will vibrate from all the movement of the viewers. Although the scene may looks the same at first glance, watch for the shadow formation, the dynamics of the sky and the changes in the color vibrancy. Take your time to enjoy how this beautiful scene unfold. Good luck!

This place is protected and can only be accessed using boat from the Guriland tour. We choose canoe and boat riding tour package. The scenery is very beautiful in the autumn, the surrounding area is calm and the water is very clear. It was cloudy and the temperature is kinda chilly but not very cold so we can still enjoy it. Unfortunately we didn't meet any animals in the area, since maybe it's too cold for them, but I'd still recommend it! If you come when it's cold, I'd recommend you to wear warm clothes and wind breaker since the speed boat is very fast and the wind can get pretty cold. The staff can't speak English very well so it'd better if you bring someone who understands Japanese or at least use online translator. They are really nice and can drop you off in the Nenokuchi bus terminal after the tour.

It would for sure look much better on a clear day. It was fairly windy, cloudy, and raining a bit when we went. The building itself is very old and looks quite aged from the outside. Be prepared for a long, curvy road on the drive up. It took quite awhile to reach the top.

Great views of the lake. Road up to the viewpoint is normally closed from Nov to April. We went during early May and there is still a small section that is closed and we have to make a short detour. Can still see unmelted snow on both sides of the road although the temperature is already about 15-18 degrees.

It offers a wealth of information about the geological history of the lake, local flora and fauna, as well as typical rocks found in the area. Kumoi no taki Falls is a stunning natural attraction located along the Oirase Stream, known for its picturesque setting and accessibility. The waterfall is one of the tallest along the stream, with three tiers and water cascading from a height of 20 meters. Visitors can easily reach it by taking a leisurely hike from Kumoi no Taki to Choshi Otaki Waterfall, which takes about 1.5 hours including photo stops.
Very pretty but the trail is not opened as it is covered by snow. The view is worth the drive and would like to visit again in autumn.

Kumoi no taki is one of the main waterfalls along Oirase Stream. I think it is one of the tallest waterfalls located along the Oirase Stream. I was there with my relatives and colleagues in April 2016, July 2017 and lately April 2019. It is one of the waterfalls easily accessible by the roadside, usually tourist or locals will alighted from the buses or cars to take pictures or to pose for pictures. It is one of the popular waterfalls and I think you will not missed it as you travel from Choshi Otaki falls downstream to the Oirase Keiryu Museum.

Nestled in the heart of Towada City, the Nitobe Memorial Museum is a charming destination that showcases the rich local history tied to the Nitobe family and their significant contributions both locally and globally. This delightful museum operates with the help of dedicated volunteers who are eager to share their knowledge about each exhibit, making your visit even more enriching. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged to support its ongoing operations.
This fantastic little museum has a lot of local history packed into it. It’s main focus is the Nitobe family and their accomplishments for both the local area and the world. The place is run by volunteers and admission is free, but they do ask for a donation to help keep it running. The volunteer that was there today took the time to explain all of the exhibits to us and give us a detailed history or each thing we asked for specifics on. If you have the time and are in Towada this place is well worth a stop!

There is an original drawing that became the basis for the 5000 yen bill. There is A5000 yen bill B. A is the Bank of Japan. The biggest question is why the Nitobe Memorial Hall is located inside a torii gate since Nitobe Inazo was a Christian. Although the content is very deep, it may be difficult to understand unless you are aware of the meaning of the shrine. To explain this about Tokugawa Ieyasu, Nikko Toshogu Shrine was built to bury Ieyasu and serve as his guardian deity. Nitobe Inazo's grandfather also has this meaning. It was very educational and meaningful. This is the spirit of Nitobe Inazo's grandfather, the Nanbu domain. thank you very much. (Translated by Google) A tiered waterfall with a drop of 90m that flows into the Kise River. It has been selected as one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls. It has a three-tier structure, and the upper tier is impressively powerful and beautiful. It's a wonderful waterfall that gives you a sense of accomplishment. It's about 9.1km from the forest road entrance to the waterfall, and it takes 120 minutes to get there, but please expect it to take around 180 minutes. 4km from the start, go right at the fork and cross the bridge. If you continue along the forest road, you will arrive at the entrance to the waterfall on the left. The remaining 800m is a mountain road with some steep slopes. The trail is clear and there are many landmarks so you won't get lost. Although the trail is long, except for the final mountain road, the trail is easy to walk through the forest, so there are few dangerous spots. The technical difficulty was low, and I felt that as long as I had enough physical strength, I could do it. There is a slope for about 1km from the branch, but the road is generally flat. Climb from the left bank. I had intended to move to the right bank at the lower stage entrance, but the amount of water seemed to blow me away, so I ended up climbing the left bank as well. Be careful as it is very slimy and the top part is a little covered. The descent starts from the middle entrance, moves to the right bank, and then goes to the lower entrance. I moved horizontally along the rock wall for about 10 meters and descended from the rock wall where there were many footholds. This may be easier when climbing. I avoided the bushes on the right bank because there were several Asian giant hornets flying around. Wear clothing for light mountain climbing that does not expose your skin. Shoes suitable for light mountain climbing are also suitable. Sneakers are fine, but I think they'll hurt your feet, so it's best not to wear them. There is a parking lot and toilet near the entrance. About 6.5km from the start, we passed through the company land of Kobayashi Co., Ltd. I digress from here. At the entrance to the promenade, there is a building belonging to the owner of the private land along the way (Kobayashi Towada Office). The following is a story I heard from an employee who happened to come out of the building. ・The water bonus due to melting snow ends around June 20th, and the peak of autumn leaves is around October 20th. ・It seems that people sometimes drive in and pick up trash, and over the past 10 to 20 years, the number of visitors has decreased year by year, and the amount of trash has decreased, making it refreshing. - Don't trust these landmarks, as malicious people will remove the signs and ribbon tape and replace them elsewhere. Nestled near the Hotel Route Inn Towada, the Catholic Towada Church is a hidden gem that beautifully combines history and architecture. This stunning Romanesque church, designed by Swiss architect Max Hindel in 1932, features intricate wood carvings crafted by a dedicated priest. Its welcoming atmosphere invites visitors to experience lively Sunday masses, making it an ideal spot for both worship and reflection.
Most of the wood carvings in this Church was painstakingly carved by a priest. A church steeped in history, one of the first few Catholic churches, if not the first Church constructed in Aomori. It is a very lovely Church, unfortunately not very well-known and visitora are few. A very beautiful church to film a drama or hold a wedding in!

Fudo Falls is a picturesque waterfall located at a Shinto shrine site, nestled in the midst of nature. The journey to the falls offers serene views and an opportunity to enjoy the negative ions as you approach one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls. A leisurely 10-minute walk from the free parking lot leads you to this natural wonder, where you can revel in the soothing sound of cascading water.
Beautiful waterfall. Be careful on your way down/up the Shrine to the falls as there is a creaking tree that looks like its about to fall near the stone toriis by the entrance.

Spectacular falls. Very peaceful. Amazing seeing the red bridge with the falls in the background. I went in early April so the snow was still on the path and you need hiking boots to fully walk on the loop track and get through the snow. In warmer weather though the track looks very easy.

There are lots of chestnut shells and chestnut burrs scattered around, and you can sense the presence of small animals. (Translated by Google) Unable to bear the sweltering midsummer heat, I drove in search of a cooler spot. I arrived at Fudo Falls in Hachimantai City, Iwate Prefecture. It's been selected as one of Japan's 100 best waterfalls and is a place I've been interested in for some time. A large red torii gate marks the road from the national highway to the waterfall. From there, I head down a slightly narrow road. It can be a bit tricky when oncoming vehicles approach, but there are plenty of spaces here and there for passing, so if you drive slowly, it's not a problem. The parking lot is spacious and can accommodate about 10 cars. As I got out of the car, the cool air immediately enveloped my skin. It's about a 10-minute walk from the parking lot to the waterfall, along a well-maintained slope. Along the way, there are trees and shrines said to be associated with marriage, creating a mystical and solemn atmosphere. As I continued walking, Fudo Falls suddenly appeared before me. I was overwhelmed by its power and was momentarily left speechless. There seemed to be plenty of water on the day we visited, and the force of the roaring water gushing down was incredible. The spray from the falls was dancing and refreshingly cool as it hit our faces. A red bridge spans the waterfall, and the powerful force of the waterfall, combined with the beauty of the bridge, created a spectacular sight. There is a walking path around the falls, but some areas are slippery, so it's wise to wear comfortable shoes. This waterfall is not just a tourist attraction; it's also a historic sacred site that has long been a training ground for ascetic monks. A statue of Acala is enshrined near the falls, and the mystical atmosphere there created a sense of cleansing. Rather than a power spot, it felt like a place to relieve daily fatigue and purify body and mind. Also, since we visited in the summer, the surrounding trees were lush and lush, creating a beautiful contrast between the deep green of the trees and the white of the waterfall and the red bridge. Apparently you can enjoy the scenery in all four seasons, so I'd like to visit again in winter to see the frozen waterfalls and during the autumn foliage season. It's the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and cleanse your mind in the great outdoors. I was able to soak up plenty of negative ions and refresh my mind and body. Even though I don't usually get much exercise, it was a wonderful place where I could enjoy nature while taking a leisurely walk.

Oirase Onsen is a serene ski area where visitors can enjoy various snow activities, such as snow tubing and sledding. The ski resort offers a competitive price and a friendly atmosphere with helpful staff. The landscape view from the cable car is stunning, and beginners have the opportunity to practice without worry. Additionally, during specific times of the year, visitors can witness beautiful natural phenomena like blooming moss phlox.
Working staff are very friendly and helpful. The price is competitive and cheaper than gala. But the snow is not as smooth as in Gala. There are not many people here. Beginners can practice without worry. Beginners are able to rent equipment and clothes but no ski helmet. The Aunty and uncle here are polite and helpful. They don’t speak English but the communication is no problem. Last cable car ends at 3.30pm. The landscape view is brilliant also. Overall, this is a great place for tourist who stay nearby.

Great price. Kind of a fun set up compared to other ski resorts. You take a lift up to an area where there is a restaurant and a beginner magic carpet. From this upper area you then take another lift to the easier runs. You are able to take the lift back down if you are not confident enough to take the harder run back to the base.

I heard that the courses have improved in many ways since the management changed. There is a practice range of about 200 yards and an approach practice range. There are some ups and downs, but there aren't many OB, so it didn't feel that difficult. The lawn was well maintained. The cart was equipped with a tablet, which was very convenient as it allowed us to see the course layout, the distance to the pin, the position of the previous group's cart, and input the scores of the members. The restaurant is small and lodge-like. They also took proper measures against the coronavirus. The Worcestershire sauce in the Ankake Seafood Yakisoba was exquisite and delicious. The locker room and bathroom are a bit shabby which is a shame.
