Authentic Japanese restaurant
Otaru Masazushi Main is a renowned sushi restaurant that has been serving customers for over 80 years, contributing to Otaru's reputation as a sushi town. The restaurant features a long counter on the first floor where up to 30 people can watch the skilled chefs prepare sushi while engaging in friendly conversations. Additionally, private rooms and halls are available on the upper floors.
We went to the store at 10.45 a.m. on Friday and there was no queue, yet, so we got a chance to dine in a private room on the second floor. The atmosphere there was awesome. Their sushi tasted AMAZING from fresh ingredients and great taste of the rice. Definitely worth coming. Reservation online is available, but you have to order and pay beforehand. So I recommend visit the restaurant a bit early and wait patiently in queue.

The seafood is very fresh and sweet. Their good quality speaks all. They are delicately prepared and the sushi are amazing. The sea urchins are rich and full of taste of the ocean, they are very good. The steamed egg and the tempura are also made to perfection. The staff are nice and welcoming. However, given the extremmmeeely long waiting, the high prices and unparalleled small portions, I doubt if it is worthwhile.
Anne P — Google review
Tried the sushi platter. Really authentic method of preparation, wasabi in between rice and fish. Tasted really fresh and the portion of the fish it's on par with other sushi shops. Tried their specialty fish sperm sac (shirako) as apparantly it's a seasonal cuisine. Tasted really creamy and umami. It's not as fishy as umi (sea urchin). Service from them is top notch. No issues with that. Only downside is you might need to wait, we waited around 30mins as we visited around 1pm. But they have a comfortable area for waiting. Overall will definitely visit again but might do a reservation first before hand.

Came to have lunch and it was quite the experience. We were greeted and seated very quickly. The staff confirmed our reservation and walked us through the meal course. They were very attentive and helped refill our drinks consistently. Food was very well presented and tasted very delicious.
Shawn G — Google review
We traveled a long way to visit this renowned restaurant, only to experience differential treatment. I’m not being overly critical—we were among the first group seated, with five people in total (three of us and two Japanese guests). We all ordered the omakase course for 15,180 yen. Since we were seated close to the young, bespectacled chef preparing the fish, we could clearly observe from the sashimi course onward that he intentionally reserved the two best and largest portions, while the rest of us received inferior cuts of fish with smaller servings. At first, I thought the chef was distributing randomly, but with each dish, those two larger portions consistently went to the Japanese guests—too coincidental to be unintentional. For example, when it came to shellfish, the three of us shared one piece cut into three portions, while the neighboring guests each received a half-piece of the same ingredient. This happened with every dish, including tuna and sea urchin. It was truly baffling. I won’t be returning.
Benson S — Google review
We were told that there is a waiting time of 15 to 30min for a table when we walked in, however we got it less than 15 min. We enjoyed the experience and the quality of food. The sashimi is awesome and fresh.
Adeline K — Google review
My first visit to this Sushi house was in May 2008. I returned in November 2025, because of my 2008 impressions. Physically, the exterior looked familiar enough to be instantly recognizable from a nearly 18 year old memory. Internally, the decor and layout is far more modern and refined than it was in 2008. Service was attentive, skilled, (naturally polite at Japanese service levels,) pleasantly timed tea refills - no asking, the staff just knew about when to refresh the tea cup, and friendly. The staff even attempted to interact in English & supplied English-language menus before they accommodated my desire for Japanese-language interactions. The Sushi chef, also, attempted some English before joining me using Japanese. The chef was personable & not at all aloof. He was open to questions regarding the varieties of seafood and rice used in the meal. The food was great. The Hokkaido rice used with the sushi & deconstructed nigiri (uni & ikura) was particularly delicious with near creamy outer texture. Each seafood item was noticeably fresh and crossed several mouth feels from melt in your mouth to hearty-bite-down maguro. I am looking forward to returning before 2042.
T. I — Google review
It was my first time trying omakase, and it was an amazing experience! The sushi was fresh and beautifully prepared. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, and they tried their best to explain each dish in English, which really helped me enjoy it even more. I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Otaru. I’ll definitely come back again!

Ramen restaurant
Nestled in the charming city of Otaru, Ramen Shodai is a delightful eatery that invites you to savor traditional ramen in a cozy and inviting atmosphere. While ramen might not be the first dish that springs to mind when exploring this picturesque destination, it certainly deserves your attention. The restaurant takes advantage of Hokkaido's rich culinary resources, crafting its broth from local ingredients like Rausu kombu and bonito flakes, resulting in a subtly exquisite flavor profile.
We stumbled upon Shodai Ramen in Otaru and it turned out to be one of the best meals of our trip! If you’re planning to try their white soy soup base ramen, make sure to come early around 11am—it’s popular and sells out fast. We had the dark soy base ramen and the salt base ramen, and both were absolutely fantastic. The pork was incredibly tender, melting in our mouths with every bite, and the broth was rich and full of flavor. Prices are very reasonable, especially compared to the more touristy spots about 1km away in Otaru. Do note that they close after lunch and reopen at 4pm, so plan your visit accordingly. If you’re looking for an authentic, satisfying ramen experience away from the crowds, Shodai Ramen is a must-visit!

Tried the white soy Ramen that limit to 20 per day. Shop opens at 11am sharp n if you wanna try they limited Ramen, you need to be at 11am Texture of noodles is firm and bouncy. Broth is rich and flavourful soup, i believed its prepared for a long time Free parking is available Refer to pic first

First time visiting Otaru on a sunny lunch hour. I did my research and found Saidai Ramen — parking is right off the main road, super easy to access. This time of year the street looks pretty empty, but the shop had a few customers and I got seated right away. I ordered the salt flavor ramen with added chashu and egg — very tasty and satisfying (though might lean a bit salty for some). Portion and quality hit the spot. No ramen vending machine here — you order directly from the waitress, who speaks English and is very friendly. The shop overall felt welcoming and easy for travelers. Another great lunch, I’ll recommend this spot to anyone visiting Otaru.

nice piping hot bowl of noodles. best for winter time. the broth is thick and u can add extra condiments like ginger or chili spices
Min Y — Google review
Didn't get the white soy sauce because they ran out of it but the regular soy sauce and soybean paste were bomb. Chashu was amazing and the noodles were firm and chewy. Update: got the white soy sauce ramen and it was AMAZING. Worth getting here when they open to have it. They have an even better chashu that goes with it
Marion Q — Google review
One of my top picks for ramen restaurants I have ever been to is this Japanese one. Ramen with a unique taste. The portions of meat and ramen are substantial and delicious. Not only is the broth reasonably priced, but it tastes really different. The building itself is fascinating, so it is definitely something you should try when you visit Otaru, the interior made of wood and having a high ceiling. You can take your time enjoying your meal because it is a little-known hidden gem that not many tourists see.
DevoWorks — Google review
A very humble restaurant that serves authentic traditional ramen in every way. Every slurp of the ramen was a delight. It was our first experience with the white soya sauce ramen which is their popular one that has only 20 servings each day. Indeed it was exceptionally delicious. Highly recommend this ramen restaurant if you are in Otaru.
Jen C — Google review
Had a small wait when we arrived. Moved rather quickly. The ramen was all delicious, but their real winner had to be their limited white miso ramen which has a set number of bowls. When it’s out, it’s out! Also had their staff lunch item which is a tuna Mayo over rice. Simple, delicious.

Soba noodle shop
Store
Nestled in a historic merchant house just a short stroll from Otaru Station, Yabuhan Soba is a beloved traditional soba noodle restaurant that has been delighting patrons since 1954. This charming eatery offers both table and tatami seating, creating an inviting atmosphere for diners.
Very good soba place in Otaru. The broth specifically was amazing, it os balanced well and has an amazing umami flavor. The service was really good, and everyone was super nice. I had the hot soba with the egg and shrimp tempura which was great and pretty affordable (1320¥). I liked the soba hot water they served in the end, it felt like an accurate, neutral ending for the meal. The menu is really interesting and they have a great English one, and I enjoyed reading about Soba and discovering more about it. Really recommended!
Stav N — Google review
Wonderful, traditional feeling Soba restaurant. Staggered seating (so as not to overwhelm the kitchen I would assume) but attentive staff made the wait pleasant. Food was excellent and very reasonably priced for the quality.
Charles C — Google review
One of the best Soba restaurants with amazing Tempura and Uni (sea urchin) The cold soba was chewy and the hot soba smooth The Uni (sea urchin) tasted great and fresh All pieces of Tempura tasted amazing Go for the Hokkaido noodles as they tasted better than imported noodles
Que — Google review
23.10.25 (Dinner) We waited approximately 30 minutes for a table, which was understandable given how busy the restaurant was. The crowd comprised a good mix of locals and tourists, a sign of the restaurant’s popularity. Our group ordered three tempura sets and one pork bowl set, along with two side dishes – squid and pork belly. We chosen the Jimono-ko (local) over Nami-ko (imported). The soba quality was commendable, and the hot broth stood out with its rich, well-balanced flavor. The pork bowl was satisfying, with tender meat and a pleasant savory balance that wasn’t overly salty. The pork belly side dish was particularly memorable — tender, flavorful, and reminiscent of dong po rou, a Chinese-style braised pork. It was an unexpected highlight of the meal. However, the tempura was less impressive. The batter lacked the crispiness we anticipated and turned rather soft, especially after being dipped into the broth. As for the squid, is not worth it. The texture lacked the chewy and freshness. Service was another strong point. The staff were friendly, attentive, and able to communicate effectively in English, making the dining experience smooth and welcoming. Overall, it was an enjoyable dinner with quality soba and excellent side dishes. While the tempura and squid fell short of expectations, the overall experience was pleasant and still worth a visit for soba lovers. I would had given a 5 star if not for the tempura and squid. Total bill: ¥9,250.
FRan — Google review
We went during off-peak hours and did not have to wait in line. My parents and I ordered: Chicken donburi, zen-tori(?), 5-dish soba, udon and hot soba. Absolutely loved everything. Interior is very well done. Soba noodle is not the typical, retail soba you’d find in foreign countries or supermarkets. Some may not like the texture like my mother, but you can tell that the food is very clean and authentic. Im the one who wants to experience the most authentic food in respective countries so I was very happy with the food. Try to come during off peak hours to avoid lines.
Youn — Google review
Perfectly done top quality soba from Hokkaido Soup is unique, not salty, leaves that tasty after feel You are given the water that was used to boil the soba, drink it, lots of vitamins as they say

Seafood restaurant
Ajidokoro Takeda is a popular stall in Otaru Market, Hokkaido, known for its seasonal seafood specialties served over rice. The market operates on a queue number system, allowing visitors to explore other stores while waiting. Despite some feedback about the temperature of the ootoro and freshness of uni and hotate, the reasonable prices and generous portions make it an attractive choice.
The food here was really good and fresh. It was easy to secure a table since I was in the market quite early in the morning. It was also easy to order as there were tablets on each booth or table. Orders arrived quite quickly with my grilled scallop reaching my table last. For payment, you have to take your receipt and pay next door. I paid in cash, as credit cards are not accepted. This was a yummy start to one's day.
Chelle B — Google review
This appears to be the second most popular place in the market. We had 45 minute wait for 12 parties ahead of us in line, for a party of 2 during lunch. Although the donburi rice bowl portion seemed small, it was very tasty. Actually my favorite portions of the meals were actually the grilled fish! The shrimp and sable fish were the stars of our meals IMHO. Ultra affordable for the large portions, I'd come back for this alone!
Eric — Google review
We came here at 12.30pm and waited for an hour, but i think it's worth the wait! The staffs were friendly and polite even though the place is crowded and busy. The sable fish is really awesome! Donburi bowl with crab, roe and sea urchin were fresh. Overall, it's a wonderful food experience.
Karen Y — Google review
Chose this restaurant due to its high rating on Google map, and relatively less long queue. Waited for around 30-45mins before getting a seat. Order made by iPad; before entering, staff already informed it may take up to 35-40 mins before food was ready. The restaurant was packed but spacious, making waiting not too torturing. I ordered assorted Maguro sashimi, and crab soup. The otoro was really surprising that the fat and meat were in great balance, it melted once being chewed and the fish taste spread in mouth. The read tuna meat was lean and chewy, no fishy smell, but could not say it was very fabulous. The crab soup came with 3-4 crab legs and half a crab. While I expected the soup would be strongly flavored as the extract of crab, the seasoning onion had a flavor that was too strong and masked the crab flavor. The crab was kind of fresh, but could not rate it as having very high standard. Total ¥2900. While expecting more from the sashimi and crab soup, I was a bit disappointed.
Crystal L — Google review
The best seafood bowl I've ever had. The wait was about 15 minutes. I came on a Wed and there was no line at all. As soon as I sit, the food came out quickly. The seasonal sashimi fish is excellent. Strongly recommend!
Hannah F — Google review
Arrived on a weekday around 11AM and came across this shop with a smaller queue. We were seated in about 15mins. A long queue started around 11:30AM. We’re traveling with our baby and the staff have been so sweet, offering toys and engaging with our baby. The rice bowls and hairy crab are so fresh! Highly recommend the hairy crab! So soft and sweet! Would definitely come back!
Sarah T — Google review
Great value seafood spot! Huge portions - especially the seafood don. Also offers grilled fish, oysters & sashimi. Popular with tourists, so expect a wait. Worth it if you want quantity over quality! 🐟🍣

Ramen restaurant
Ramen Tokaiya is a charming little ramen shop that captures the essence of traditional Japanese dining. Nestled on a quiet street, this eatery features counter seating where you can watch the skilled chefs craft your meal right before your eyes. The menu is refreshingly simple, offering three delicious options: soy sauce ramen, miso ramen, and their standout dish—barbecued garlic pork miso ramen.
Ramen like we have never tasted before! Aussie couple lined up in the cold to try a highly recommended Ramen shop & we were not disappointed. Chef & his aide delivered some mouth watering ramen & gyoza along with a couple of beers. Delicious, filling & super satisfying! Worth the wait, but get before / as soon as they open or you may miss out… oishikata!!

Excellent gyoza here. The soup base is a bit salty but very flavorful, ramen is very nice texture. Very long waiting time to get a table. We waited 1.5 hours to get a table. Only have 10 seat counter!

I just had the best ramen in Otaru 🍜, and I'm still dreaming about it! The owner is a true superhuman 💪, handling everything from cooking to cleaning with amazing speed. The meat and ramen were superb 👌, making it an unforgettable meal. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area! Otaru is such a charming town 🏡, and this ramen experience made it even better.

Ramen Tokaiya in Otaru is a must-visit for ramen enthusiasts and families alike. Known for its rich, flavorful broth and springy noodles, the restaurant offers a satisfying, hearty meal perfect for the chilly Hokkaido weather. The miso-based ramen is a standout, boasting a deep umami taste, and the generous toppings, like tender chashu and perfectly cooked eggs, enhance the overall experience. The establishment is child-friendly, with a cozy and welcoming atmosphere that caters well to families. The staff are accommodating, and the menu offers options that can suit children’s palates. Coupled with its warm ambiance and delicious food, Ramen Tokaiya is an excellent choice for a family meal in Otaru. Visiting during off-peak hours is recommended as it can get busy.

I wandered into this store after seeing the absurd lines at Sankaku Market, and the heavy snow outside. This is a small ramen store, with counter seating for about 10-12 people, divided with a privacy barrier every 2 seats. They serve three types of ramen (soy sauce, miso, and a specialty BBQ pork miso), as well as rice and gyoza. I got the normal miso ramen, an order of gyoza, and a beer. The ramen came out w/ a small spoon of spicy miso, that you can add to your bowl, should you wish. The broth was flavorful, and filled with small chunks of flame-charred pork, which added a wonderful bitter and savory taste. The gyoza were crispy on the bottom and soft up top (pork and cabbage filled). Overall, a great meal, but just be prepared for a wait, due to the limited counter seating. There is only a singular chef, so it takes a bit of time for customers to cycle through. Total cost was 2,050 yen for me.
Alex — Google review
The miso ramen from Tokaiya with garlic barbecued pork was definitely one of best in Otaru. The broth of this ramen was flavourful, rich, and very savoury, along with perfectly cooked noodles. The gyoza on the other hand was a little average in comparison. This Japanese ramen place was pack during lunch hour, so be prepare to wait in line or come early!
Logan Y — Google review
Im not a ramen lover but the soup was rich, fried pork was crispy and yummy! Please note that the shop operates by one and only person - the owner. It takes a while to get the seat.
V — Google review
Of the many ramen shops in the area, I’m so happy to have spent my calories at Tokaiya, This shop is run by one chef and his assistant. Speciality is the miso pork, dumplings were made & cooked perfectly too. The ramen had the perfect amount of salt, fat and umami. Noticed that if you order the soy sauce ramen a different type of noodle is used. Queued up before the shop was opened, suggest to get there early as possible.

Located in Otaru, Hokkaido, the LeTAO Main Store is a must-visit for food enthusiasts. The store is part of a chain that includes six outlets in Otaru, with five along Sakaimachi street. The main store features a cafe on the second floor where you can savor their signature Double Fromage Cheesecake and other delectable treats.
The 1st floor is a store. On the 2nd floor, at a cafe, I ordered the Special Chocolate Cake set which came with tea. It was delicious with the feel of the main store advantage. After the cakes, I checked out the 3rd floor observation deck. It's only 3rd story high(it's a tower so actually higher than 3rd floor but the store says its on the 3rd so) but since other buildings are not tall, the place has a good vantage point. Don't forget to ring the bell. You will know what I mean.

This company had many locations in Otaru. I have to say their cheese cake (Camembert) and custard were amazing but can work on their coffee. Over all Otaru coffee place was not as good as Sapporo. In any case, people should try their cheese cake and custard in the little glass cup.
D和美 — Google review
LeTAO’s main store is one of Otaru’s most famous sweet spots. The ground floor is filled with cakes and souvenirs, while the second floor café serves their world-famous Double Fromage cheesecake with tea in a cozy space. There’s even an observation deck with views of the town. The café is very popular, so expect a long queue, especially on weekends. Good news for travelers, the store is foreign-friendly, and some staff speak English, Chinese and Thai making it easy to order and enjoy. A must-visit for dessert lovers.
Chalermchon S — Google review
A place filled with warmth, sweet and cream aroma! Cafe in the 2nd floor is always full, offers cake and drink set. We ordered a 3 cake set, Strawberry, chestnut and grape cream cakes, silky and flavorful. Regretted ordering Americano, which was too watery. Should have ordered its aromatic tea. The portions are quite small, if you are expecting a Americano Starbucks size, order triple!
Jess L — Google review
The taste was pretty average considering its reputation. It wasn’t bad, but I honestly don’t understand why this place is so popular. It’s definitely not worth waiting in a long line for — both the desserts and the coffee were just okay.
Johnny K — Google review
I tried the soft serve at the LeTAO main store in Otaru, but it was not as impressive as expected. Although the cone looked lovely and the texture was smooth, the flavour itself was disappointing. The ice cream had a noticeable milk-powder smell and taste, rather than the clean, fresh dairy richness you usually find in Hokkaido soft serve. It felt a little artificial, lacking depth and that true milky sweetness. Considering LeTAO’s reputation for high-quality cheesecakes and pastries, the soft serve fell short. A nice photo, perhaps, but the taste simply didn’t match the brand’s name.
Snail H — Google review
My family and I as first time foreign tourists in Otaru were excited to visit the LeTAO here as it originated from Otaru. So, we decided to have some of its desserts at its cafe that's located on the upper level of the store here. While we had to wait for our turn to be seated, it was well worth the wait as the desserts were not only pretty but also pretty yummy. Service here was friendly and attentive. The dining ambience was okay and could have been better if the air-conditioning here was cooler to cope with the dining crowd and warmish weather.

Sankaku Market is a charming marketplace in Otaru, Hokkaido, offering a down-to-earth experience with vendors selling an array of fresh produce, seafood, and prepared dishes. It's a popular stop for visitors looking to savor delicious seafood for lunch. The market is part of an itinerary that includes other attractions such as the Nikka Distillery factory tour and tasting, Otaru Canal, Sakaimachi Street with its music box and glass shops, and more.
Very narrow alley selling lots of seafood. Targeted at tourists. They sell huge crabs and other seafood, including dried seafood products. The alley is on a slope. There are also a few eating places, selling kaisendon. There is paid parking nearby at the top of the alley. Recommended if you are in the area, for the atmosphere and vibes!

Sankaku Market is amazing for seafood lovers! Everything is super fresh, and the seafood bowls are loaded with flavor. Most important price is reasonable. The live scallop was unforgettable — sweetness and freshness on another level. Definitely a must-try if you’re here. Fuiyoh

It's quite an easy destination from JR Otaru station, just use the left exit and walk aside. There're so many fresh seafood-donburi restaurant all around.

Must come if you're around the Otaru region! It is a very small seafood market. But it is an experience seeing so many live king crabs and snow crabs. Some of them are almost as big as a human arm! Note that most of the crabs are from Russia and if you want the ones caught in Japan, it will be a little more expensive. We also tried the oysters which were fresh delicious as well. The best way to eat fresh seafood is just to request for it to be steamed. You taste so much sweetness in the meat.
SL W — Google review
The place is not as big as Tsukiji market in Tokyo or Nishiki market in Kyoto, but I am satisfied with their fresh seafood. Their salmon and uni were sweet 😋 I ordered the hairy crab 🦀 and it was so meaty and delicious. Pricey though but was worth the experience. Oh just a reminder!! Be ready with your cash as they only accept cash and Pay Pay. Bring your mini fan also, although they provided us with mini fan while waiting. Weather was like 34 degrees when we visited.
Arlene L — Google review
Size-wise, Sankaku Market is much smaller than the one in Busan, Korea. But the big difference is the Japanese culinary treatment — after you pick your seafood and choose the shop, they prepare it so beautifully. And the best part? It’s only a 2-minute walk from Otaru Station.
Leslie W — Google review
A very narrow market, so it felt quite crowded when I visited. The location is super convenient as it’s very close to Otaru Station. Most of the shops sell seafood, and almost every stall displays huge king crabs right at the front. The prices I saw ranged from 10,000 to 12,000 yen per kg. I managed to get a 1.2 kg crab for 10,000 yen without even bargaining—though I heard you should bargain here, but I didn’t. There are actually two entrances to the market. I accidentally used the one farther from Otaru Station, not knowing there’s a much closer entrance right beside the station. So take note if you’re visiting!

Sansaku Market is a must-visit for fresh Hokkaido flavors, friendly vendors, and a lively, local experience. Highly recommended for both tourists and food enthusiasts!

Chicken restaurant
Japanese restaurant
Restaurant
Naruto Main Shop, originally named Wakadori Jidai Naruto, has been serving up its famous fried chicken since 1952. Located in Otaru, the restaurant is known for its well-marinated and juicy fried chicken with a crispy exterior. The half-chicken set lunch is a popular choice among locals and visitors alike. Despite the long lines, patrons eagerly wait to savor the tender and juicy fried chicken served hot from the fryer.
If you're a fan of authentic Japanese fried chicken, this place is a must-visit! Their deep-fried chicken parts and half-chicken are incredibly juicy and tender—an absolute must-order. The atmosphere is lively and full of charm, making the dining experience even better. While the serving speed is average, the quality of the food more than makes up for it. Don’t miss out on their fried rice—it’s a hidden gem that’s perfectly cooked and packed with flavor. Highly recommended!
Joon T — Google review
A must-visit for anyone craving delicious fried chicken in true form. Conveniently located near the Otaru Canal and shopping streets, it’s easy to find and perfect for a lunch stop. The restaurant has comfortable seating with a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. Their famous half-fried chicken is crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and seasoned just right—it truly lives up to its reputation. Portions are generous and great value for money. Some parkings for the shop available around the area as well.

Had a late snack at about 4.30pm. Could get a seat immediately. Food arrived after about 5 minutes. Ordered the half chicken and karaage. Both were excellent and freshly fried. Very juicy, crispy and simply seasoned well.
Xunliang L — Google review
A group of 9 people visited on a monday night for dinner at around 7pm. There is a small waiting room at the entrance and we had to wait for around 5 minutes to get a table. We actually got a private room. Once we went to the room and called out one of the staff to order, only to find out that we are supposed to order at the main reception (there's one each in each floor) showing our table number. After about 15 minutes we starte receiving our food. The food wasn't bad, but not sure what's all hype about it.
Bhanuka S — Google review
I heard it’s a restaurant with over 70 years of history, famous for its fried chicken. They also serve sashimi and sushi. The fried chicken and chicken skin are especially delicious. The waiting area has a charming, retro vibe — it feels like stepping back into the old days.
Annie Y — Google review
It was cool to finally experience the Naruto fried chicken here in Otaru. We got the half chicken set, fried chicken and gyoza. The chicken was crispy and well seasoned (I think it was brined). The gyoza was about standard and nothing special. All the fried food can get a bit heavy so a drink to chase/cut the grease and heaviness is recommended. We enjoyed the vibe of the interior and the price was very reasonable for the amount of food we received. If I was to do it again, I would not add the additional fried chicken as it felt a bit redundant. I would order something else instead. The menu has a variety of food to choose from aside from the chicken dishes.
Benjamin H — Google review
Was recommended to this place as it is famous and popular in the area. Was solely disappointed with their speciality fried chicken. We made the mistake of ordering a half chicken and a chicken set. Both were came with the same half chicken but the set came with rice, soup and pickles. The fried chicken was salty. That is about the only seasoning on the chicken. So it is better to order the set where you can mix the chicken with the rice to balance out the saltiness of the chicken. On the positive side the chicken skin is crispy. More impressively the chicken is not oily. The meat tenderness and juiciness is average. The price is very affordable. The restaurant is popular so be prepared to wait a while for your table and food.
Gooose — Google review
You queue up at the machine and there’s a separate room in the front where you can wait for your number on the screen. Once you sit, you have a table card and you order at the counter and wait for your food. The chicken was salty but that’s to be expected since we eat with rice. I liked the chicken set meal more than the kaarage and chicken skin skewer or fried rice. I didn’t like the fried rice too much.

French restaurant
Moliere is a renowned restaurant in Hokkaido, offering modern French cuisine using seasonal ingredients from the region. The elegant dining room provides a cozy and calming atmosphere where guests can savor authentic French dishes created by the father of French cuisine in Hokkaido. The restaurant's emphasis on using ingredients from the fertile land of Hokkaido results in rustic yet refined dishes that showcase the best of each element.
If you're in Sapporo, you have to visit Moliere. This was the best dining experience we had in Hokkaido-the food was outstanding and the service was impeccable. Our group had the Menu Terroir and every single dish from the tasting menu blew us away, especially the crab flan and the squid ink albalone. The portions were very generous for a fine dining restaurant. When we told staff it was our first time in Hokkaido, they suggested locally produced wine pairings and other must-try local restaurants and desserts. The staff were very knowledgeable, friendly, and made us feel completely at home. Moliere does magic with its delicate and refined take on French cuisine using Hokkaido's finest ingredients.

Definitely recommend coming to Moliere if in Sapporo city. The food was spectacular, just as good as my first visit 2 years ago. The beef is out of this world. Looking forward to return again soon. Regret I was in such a rush that I didn't have time to dress up appropriately for the occasion to enjoy the experience, next time definitely will be more aware. These days everyone so casual that visiting such beautiful places should be more respected. Yes I will be more aware next time. :) Thank you Hiro for looking after us so well. Truly enjoyed the evening.

We were lucky enough to walk-in and snag a table for two without a reservation - and it was a fantastic meal. Each course was absolutely delicious, brought out efficiently, executed precisely, with mostly local ingredients but with French techniques. Service was very attentive and impeccable. One of our favourite meals of our Japan trip
Kathleen O — Google review
food was truly one of a kind and the service was excellent!! the prix fixed menus included nearly 10+ unique dishes that were perfectly crafted and presented. every dish was executed beautifully with an origin story, how to eat it, and what ingredients were in it. all the ingredients were local to hokkaido and really felt farm to table. the corn soup and deer were my favorite! while the portions may appear small, by the end of the meal i was absolutely stuffed. highly recommend making a reservation to try this place out!

I had reserved the table earlier than one month(through the phone call). The restaurant is located nearby Hokkaido Shrine. I love their warm welcome and cozy atmosphere. The staff were extremely kind. I had the Hokkaido course menu for dinner. My favorite dish was venison, it was so juicy, tender, and aromatic. All the seafood dishes were also tasty. They were good at pastry too, their tart, butter, and bread were flavorful. After I finished my meal, The staff offered their help to book me a taxi. It was a wonderful dinner experience in Hokkaido.

Booked way in advance and happy to have enjoyed the experience. Very cozy and super attentive friendly environment. We had the 18,000 yen course and was delicious from beginning to the end. Staff will go out of their way to explain everything in detail (English if needed) Loved everything but the pine smoked beef was insanely tender and fragrant. One of the best ever I had! The wine selection is decent with local choices which was great. They only have 6-7 tables and dinner was super enjoyable. They make sure each table is attended to. Very nice touch and food came out on time and the flow was all well timed. Definitely highly recommend this cozy, unpretentious restaurant with delicious fresh local ingredients. Really enjoyed it. Thank you 🙏

Residing in a quaint spot out of the centre of Sapporo, this 3 star michelin restaurant that brings out arguably the best products of Hokkaido to the discerning guests. We ordered the 18000 yen dinner and I personally had the best time of my life. Staff were helpful in guiding us through the menu in English. The best dish had to be the medium rare steak. Fragrant, tender and perfectly cooked. The second best dish was the hairy crab served with rice and cream cheese. Perfectly seasoned and blended well with rice. Overall, I would give a score of 9 out of 10 for this restaurant.

This seafood restaurant is popular for its set meals and premium items. While the food is fresh, it can be a bit expensive. The service is friendly but pushy at times.
After a tiring half day at the aquarium, this place just hits the spot. Maybe a bit too much actually! We came there just before the noon time rush and were seated at the low seating area. I ordered the herring meal for myself and we had some for sharing. Boy was I surprised. The whole herring was a good 20-25cm long! I managed to defeat it but was really really stuffed. The seafood was very fresh and the restaurant was packed. They billed us for a dish we didn't order but after a while took it off our bill. Around 12000 for our fam of 5.
Jeff M — Google review
We really enjoyed our lunch here. The seafood was super fresh, well-seasoned, and perfectly cooked. Ordering a set per person along with some grilled seafood was more than enough to leave us full and satisfied. The sight and the smell of the grilled fish while waiting in line was a nice touch and kept us excited for the meal ahead. Sashimi is great. Parking is conveniently located just across from the restaurant, making it easy to access. Despite the popularity, we didn’t have to wait long for the food, and everything came out quickly. The atmosphere is casual yet lively, which makes the experience even more enjoyable. A wonderful place to enjoy delicious seafood in Japan—highly recommended for both travelers and locals.

Their food is superb! So fresh and very well cooked. Their grilled fish and scallop are really really on point. It’s worth going to though the restaurant is a bit far from Otaru canal and the center. Parking lot is available in front of the restaurant. The restaurant owner and staff are so nice and welcoming.

A local Japanese seafood restaurant. Hilighted in the grilled seafood and good qaulity ingredients. The food was delicious but quite slow service. Available both normal table and floor table. Parking lot in front of the restaurant. The price was cheap but unreasonable in some menus. Cash only.

Otaru Beer Otaru Warehouse No.1 is a German-style brew hall located along the picturesque Otaru Canal. This microbrewery offers educational tours and tastings of their unique Bavarian-style beer brewed using traditional methods. The brewery's heavy-stone exterior may not be appealing, but inside, visitors are transported into a craft beer paradise.
Visited on 24th July 2025 Highly recommend this place. I chose this for lunch but all 4 of us still felt full when we arrived, almost skip it. When my family looking at the menu at the outdoor entrance, we were thirsty because of the hot weather. Finally decided to have a light bite in the air-con. 😝 Once we stepped in, immediately love the vibe of this place!! The waitress told us we can choose any table to sit as long as not crush with the reservation timing stated on the table. Interesting. The ordering paper & menu are on the table, just put down item number. Go to the cashier to place order with table number, the robot waiter will serve to your table. Bill at the cashier when you decide to leave. Drinking water is self-service near the bar. Bathrooms are located near the stairs, both G/F & 2/F. They were clean. Food quality is excellent, so do those beers & drink. We order a non-alcohol beer & a normal black beer to try & compare, to our surprise, non-alcohol beer tastes great too. I bought beers from their shop as souvenir! There is a stamp next to the cashier if you are collecting around Japan like me, don’t forget that.

I went to Otaru with my brother! We had a great time! It had a scandanavian vibe with finger food, lot of pasta and beer from the tap! The staff is really friends as with all people in Japan! I was hoping for some Japanese food but didn't get there! So go there for the vibe and the view of the canal and of course the beer! There's also merchandise shopping! Food is good enough to get by
Gaurav R — Google review
In my opinion you go here for the German ambiance. The beer and food were ok. It's cool to sit there with a beer and enjoy the German hall feel with robots going around serving people. We had french fries and a corn pizza. Both were somewhat undercooked to our standards and tasted ok. I would go back in the future to grab a beer upstairs but that would be about it.

It might be reasonable to judge a brewery solely on the quality of its beer, but the seafood paella was a dish that shouldn't have been sold. All the food in Hokkaido was excellent during our five-night, six-day stay, so this is... Well, I guess that's part of the trip.

Restaurant
Masazushi Zenan is a sushi restaurant in Otaru that offers high-quality sushi at a fraction of the price of other restaurants. The restaurant is brightly lit and has a large glass window, making it easy to watch the chefs as they prepare your sushi. Aside from table seats, there is also a counter where you can dine in true Japanese style.
I had the pleasure of visiting Otaru for the third time, and finally, I experienced the incredible sushi at Otaru Masazushi Zenan. The online booking process was seamless, they arranged us a window seat with a stunning view of the iconic Otaru Canal. The sushi was not only delicious but also accompanied by a special treat – we were fortunate enough to witness a beautiful rainbow. It was truly an exceptional dining experience.

A sushi a-la-carte will help you call a night in Otaru. This time I have ordered “Tuna”, “Middle Fatty Tuna”, and “Fatty Tuna” for a full spectrum taste of Tuna, and they were equally in good taste but I will pick the Fatty one and the original tuna for a distinctive taste comparison; the “Big botan shrimp” was so fresh and you would be lured to call for another round.

I was fortunate to secure a seat offering a delightful view of Otaru's canal. Throughout my dining, I could hear the staff handling continuous reservations. The seafood and sushi served were exceptionally fresh, and the standout dish was definitely the flavorful squid.
TT T — Google review
I would like to give a better rating, but given my different sushi experiences while staying in Otaru, I cannot give more than 2 stars. Let's start with the good points. The shop atmosphere is nice and I was lucky enough to seat by the window with a view on the Otaru canal. Fish was fresh. Now let's move to the bad points... The food itself. This place felt a bit expensive. For this price, one could expect a better ratio between fish and rice. I mean by that more fish and less rice.
Jean-François B — Google review
For the price and quality of sushi we got, we will definitely go back if we ever visit Otaru again. We ordered a bunch of sushi and steak. The service was relatively good and the place is nice. It was a bit hard at first to find the restaurant because the sign is all in Japanese. There is no actual sign that says “ Masazushi Zenan”.

Despite its accolades, Kukizen offers reasonably priced fresh sushi and sashimi that will elevate your sushi dining experience. Situated in a port town abundant with seafood, Kukizen prides itself on serving the finest seasonal catches from the sea of Hokkaido.
We booked a 12 sushi set lunch course via JPNEAZY. The restaurant had been recently relocated to a new building as of October 2024. We felt like the sushi making and atmosphere was quite rushed, but the sushi was excellent in flavor and delightful to eat. I enjoyed eating the tuna and the uni. Definitely worth checking out if you are in Otaru for the price, would book ahead.

I could only reserve the omakase lunch online and it costed me around 3800 yen for 2 people to reserve the seats online. I came for the Michelin 2 Star recognition. We were the first batch of customers to walk in by 11:00, without reservation we were seated in the private room instead of the sushi bar that I would much preferred. A set menu with 12 sushi at chef’s selection were served. Fish and seafood were deliciously prepared, however I found sushi rice to be a bit tough for my liking. Miso soup was nice and in the lighter side of the miso taste. Overall nice and good value for a 2 star.

Very friendly staff and excellent nigiri omakase experience for 5000 yen (12 pieces) for lunch. Walked in at 1130 when the restaurant opened without a reservation on a Wed. Misono Ice Cream is a charming ice cream parlor with a rich history, dating back almost a century. The shop offers an authentic taste that evokes childhood memories, using fresh and organic ingredients. Visitors are drawn to its vintage atmosphere and the warm hospitality of the elderly owners. Despite the slightly higher prices, patrons find the unique flavors and friendly service well worth it. The English menu makes ordering easy for international visitors, adding to the appeal of this Hokkaido gem.
I recommending this place for a very warm atmosphere, good and affordable food. I love the ice cream (soft cream), it was amazing This place has an old grandma grandpa vibe

After walking around Otaru Canal, we wanted a little sweet treat and we found this ice cream place in this shopping street and we went up the stairs to the place and it felt like I just entered to someone grandparents house and it felt nice and cozy, the two older folks with not that much English were very nice and we appreciate how hard they were trying to communicate with us. We ordered two sundaes, they are kinda pricey but I overall enjoyed them and when we were ready to pay they were so sweet to us and thanked us and waved us goodbye. I would recommend this place if you’re interested in a retro style atmosphere since the store have been around for 100 years.

As everyone says, the vintage ambiance is the first thing you notice. I was saddened that there aren’t a variety of icecream flavors like the one at the Otaru Neon. Service wise, I felt slightly disrespected when I was seated first but they took a Japanese family’s order who came in after and sat later than us.

Vintage atmosphere, business ran by 2 lovely elders (thus we have to wait a while until the ice cream come to our table). The ice cream is not like the usual ice cream that you eat, I bet you never taste an ice cream like this. It has ginger&honey flavor inside (even though they don't use ginger). The price was a bit expensive though, but I think it was worth the experience.

(Tourist from Hong Kong, early March) I visited 美園 on a Monday afternoon. Otaru was not busy. Only few people on the street. We were attracted by the long history of this ice cream shop which established in 1919. The lady in the shop was very nice. Always with smile in her face. The shop has English menu. We ordered a pudding sundae and coffee sundae. The ice cream texture is between soft served and sand ice. The flavor including the taste of milk and yogurt (I actually mean Yakult), and there should be honey and some flavor like ginger and lemon peel by guess. I pretended to be the owner and joked to my boyfriend the ingredients are actually secret. After that we read a Chinese interview showing on the table mentioning exactly what i was saying. Lol. My sundae also with melon juice in it. Which melon flavor in Hokkaido is so popular and the taste is so good! (In fact the Yaburi melon is so famous and precious) The menu was written in Chinese characters which were probably the translation in the old days. In a very different way. If you know Chinese you could tell how interesting it is. Overall is a good place that I highly recommended. It is uneasy to run a business for so long. You should get to know about their history and the history of Otaru.

Went here as it was recommended by ‘Life in Japan’ article for its “great prices”, but found it to be a disappointment. My partner and I ordered 2 Kaisen Dons, 3000 yen and 2000 yen. For that price I was expecting the freshest seafood in good size portions but was disappointed to find the sashimi thinly sliced and tiny prawns (more like shrimp), and a few slithers of Uni. It didn’t look or taste as fresh as what we had in Nijo market in Sapporo. After eating the seafood my partner felt sick. Better off find a better place to eat.

I ordered the Poseidon bowl and it was delicious. I ordered the largest serving (850 yen before tax, 935 yen after) of Cana bowl. It comes with slices of fresh salmon, 2 pcs of scallop (I think), pickle, fish egg, and a soup. It was all great and worth the price.

Fantastic place for kaisendon and grilled seafood. Order the cheaper mixed kaisendon, you get all the types of seafood for a cheaper price. The grilled squid is very nicely done and the king prawns were good too. One of the cheaper dining options along this tourist trap street.

Great Donburi dishes (over rice), there is raw tuna (Maguro), raw salmon, and many other items. Service is quick and the food very good. There isn't a lot of space so you may need to wait to be seated.

Ordered the main recommendation multi sashimi rice bowl, the food is 3/5. Good price but you can get it at most places. The Ebi is not as sweet and the rice of the sashimi is a bit tough texture. If you are craving for food, go for the fried chicken instead.

We were on a day tour to Otaru under HIS travel via KKday. The tour guide mentioned to us that one of the must-eats include sea urchin (uni). We didn’t really have time and went in to this shop, in which you will notice the tourist population are slightly higher. Honestly, the uni bowl they served here are more expensive than the usual market rate else where around Hokkaido and the uni served not super fresh and slimy. Kinda disappointed. The bowl of rice super huge but you will notice some empty spots in the bowl, the rice were visible to your eye and the toppings were only surface. Customers usually don’t mind paying a more premium price if the seafood is fresh. Bad quality menu photos as I seldom take but I’m trying to stress that the price point not worth it at all.

It was my first time in the area so I can’t compare this restaurant to other restaurants. However, the food was reasonably well priced and quite tasty. They also accept multiple forms of payment such as alipay, catering to the Chinese market.

Sushi restaurant
Sushiden is a popular sushi restaurant located on the renowned Sushiya-dori street in Otaru, having been established for 15 years. Despite being relatively new, it attracts a steady stream of loyal customers seeking its expertly crafted sushi and professional service. The restaurant offers various seating options including counter seats, tables, and raised tatami-floored areas. Guests rave about the incredibly fresh and delicious seafood, with particular highlights being the sizable oysters and delectable sushi plates.
I was really disappointed with my experience here. The seafood, which I expected to be fresh and flavorful, was underwhelming and poorly prepared. The service was slow, and the staff seemed uninterested in assisting us. For the price, I expected much better quality and attention to detail. We ate total 21780 for this. Would not recommend. 👎🏻👎🏻

Never ever visit this restaurant! So expensive but no quality. We ordered two hot pots, but the food are nothing like the pictures, and the fish only few pieces with unfresh taste . (See the pictures, this two hot pots plus 1 roast fish cost me 12000 yen) Also, I don’t understand why the cook stared at me while he came out of the kitchen. The fee was not worth also, there’s no service at all. If there’s zero star to choose, I’ll give 0 or -1 star without hesitation. This restaurant really ruined my vacation.

Was my most terrible dining experience in Japan. It was snowing hard in otaru and the first restaurant we wanted to visit had a long queue. We walked back and camr across this place. The menu said their sukiyaki beef was A5 wagyu hokkaido beef (16.000 yen for 2 pax). It was nothing like A5 wagyu hokkaido beef. We tried to question the chef on the beef quality (with language limitations). The chef insisted it was hokkaido A5 wagyu. First of all, if it really were high quality beef, it would have marbling. It did not have any sort of marbling. What it had was hard fat around the edges. Secondly, they would not just dump high quality beef like meat scraps. They would display it to the customer. Beef quality was nothing like the photo or display. The sushi and sashimi was below par. We were a party of 5 (2 adults and 3 kids) and we paid close to 50.000 yen. 16.000 x 2 (sukiyaki) = 32.000 1800 for 6 tamagos 5000 for 8 slices of salmon sashimi 4000 for 4 slices of salmon belly sushi 600 for 2 rice. Not worth it. Please walk to another restaurant. I regret not reading the reviews first.
Kartika L — Google review
Dun ever come to here , the chef yelled at the client when I ask him why the sukiyaki beef is already cooked into the pot. The beef is basically all fat , quality worse than sukiya . 16000 yen per pot , a totally a rip off.

The food is meh. Just one bowl of food, you can taste not all the ingredient are prepare and cook right . Example: The mantis shrimp is a bit over cooked, The salmon roe served is a bit too warm, The abanlone slice is overcook and super tough, The crab meat taste bland like store cooked frozen meat, The squid a bit overcook and slimy , The tamago and uni is so so, Only the raw shrimp, tuna belly and scallop is sweet and nice. Lol.
Lim L — Google review
It’s a bit pricy in Hokkaido. The sea urchins was great but the salmon roe was on the average. If you cannot eat raw food, there were two choices of hotpot that only available in winter. I ordered the spicy one (あんこう鍋) but there was mostly veggies.

Seafood donburi restaurant
Sankakutei is a popular dining spot in Takinami known for its fresh and delicious seafood bowls. Despite being less crowded than other restaurants, it offers high-quality ingredients that shine through in its dishes. The colorful bowl, featuring a variety of items including Uni, prawn, ikura, salmon, and maguro, is highly recommended. The ikura and uni rice bowl is particularly delightful despite being slightly expensive.
Nice and Cozy restaurant in market. We waited around 20 mins to have a seat. Food is fresh and lovely. Smallest portion is suitable for less-eater like me. You should try Grilled Atka Mackerel, Donburi with crab and Uni. Super delicious with affordable price than Nijo Market or other markets in Sapporo.

The alaskan king crab we got for 16000yen for a big one. not bad price at all. the service was nice too. they let us take a picture with the crab first before they cut it up.
Marga N — Google review
We had the best king crab, uni, and shrimp of our lives at this spot. Do yourself a favor and start with their No.1 best-seller: the Sansaku-don—a perfect combo of all three in one bowl. It’s a great way to figure out which flavor hits you hardest… then go all in. For the crab, the staff will even walk you out to choose your own live crab. You get free samples and they’ll gladly snap a photo of you with your pick. They typically cook it half boiled, half grilled—both are amazing, but the boiled version won us over with its sweetness and tenderness. As for the uni and shrimp—whether as a side or a full bowl, just order them. Trust me. You won’t regret it. Friendly staff, clean for a wet market setting, and the whole experience has that lively, authentic market vibe. Highly recommend.

1.5h was worth the wait. Shortest queue of all 3 popular shops but it’s really delicious. I got the 10 toppings one and it’s really amazing. Uni & Crab is really sweet! Salmon was soft and delicious. Best donburi I ever had. The cod fish is a must order!!

Gor the popular 2400JPY 3 items set with shrimps, salmon roe and scallops with extra rice for 100JPY. Very good lunch and value for the money. The scallops were incredible. Recommended for a lunch in the fish market.

The wait is the shortest amongst the rest of the popular restaurants but the food is great. Seafood is fresh and rice is tasty. You write your name on the paper outside the shop and wait for your name to be called. We ordered the popular (かうつルどん)Kaosuru Don 2500 Yen and salmon Don 1600 Yen as well as the 1600 Yen set.

We went to takinami, ajidokoro and sankakutei just to determine which was the nicest and my goodness, SANKAKUTEI (with the least to no queue) WAS THE BEST (for us on that day)! Freshness, comfort of the restaurant, and the sashimi is still nice and chilled when served! We all enjoyed our bowls here the most! If you don’t know what to get, just go for the colourful bowl (1 of each item, total 10). I love the Uni and prawn and ikura and salmon and maguro.. ok almost everything was amazing! The portions are smaller than the other restaurants but the quality of the seafood is generally better. Bonus - there’s English menu!

Otaru Kita Tougarashi is a cozy restaurant in Hokkaido that offers a nostalgic Japanese atmosphere. Despite some initial concerns about the service, many visitors have found the lady owner to be friendly and attentive. The standout feature of this place is the delicious mutton, which is tender and juicy without any gamey smell. Guests have raved about the unique griller that allows for more concentrated lamb oil, making the meat even more flavorful.
I would absolutely agree with comment before about service, the owner-lady did fantastic job, she managed all on her own. Very polite and attentive. Price is surprisingly cheap when the quality of food is so delicious. Mutton is really tender and has no games-smelled. Love this place for everything, yum!!!

Cozy lamb grill barbeque shop opposite the Otaru canals run by a chatty charming lady. The lamb steak and Genghis Khan (which is the entire menu) were juicy and sizzled beautifully. You can roast and cut your own meat and vegetables. The shop is tiny and seats max 8, but 6 is comfortable, with the seats opening directly out to the doors. Service is quick and pricing reasonable at 1100-1800 JPY for meaty goodness.
Sam S — Google review
Good food, friendly owner. Recommend jingisukan (rice, and grilled mung bean srpouts and onion are included), grilled green onion, beer and shochu on the rock. You can only order full one portion if you order extra. I have tried several drinks including the ones mentioned above but I would not recommend the other alcoholic drinks on the menu. This place is cash only.

The lady handles all customer services by herself. We came for an early dinner and later it's full of people and waiting outside. It's not a big place but it's very comfortable. The food is just as nice.

Some say service is not good which I agreed until we visited again! The lady become much friendly! Lamb quality is not out of the world to be honest but 3 things made the restaurant awesome! 1. The griller, it’s deeper then what we usually see. When you put onion and bean spout in it, there is more space for them to cook and lamb oil is more concentrate! Thus more delicious! 2. The sauce! It’s not as salty and able to bring out the flavor of the meat! The taste is just right! Oh yes, it said it has veggie in it! 3. The charcoal. Finally, the not so friendly owner. Once you start talking to her, she is very nice indeed!!! Our daughter forgot where her hat was and the owner tried her best to help! Dealing with a lot of tourist sometime is pretty stressful, if you put yourself in her shoes, you will understand!

This place has so much character and really good price. Space is limited, but we were there at around 8 and we were seated immediately. Fresh lamb was the only option and you have to cook it yourself. The drink menu is great.

Best meal at Hokkaido during our Honeymoon! The place is quite rundown but gave a nostalgic Japanese atmosphere. The mutton is so tasty and juicy. Beansprout were so good and fresh. As first time foreign tourists in Otaru, my family and I were here today to try the local "Panju" dessert served at this cafe. We ordered quite a few "Panjus" among us along with some beverages. The "Panjus" were like a spongy bun with sweet filling therein and the flavours ranged from the local red bean paste to even camembert cheese. My family and I enjoyed our choice of pretty looking "Panjus" at this cafe. The service and the dining ambience here were also very good.

The food quality and portion are worth a lot more than its price tag. A pasta for ¥1000+ is a steal. With 3 adults, 1 child, we spent 10,000 including starter, pasta and dessert.i had the swimming crab pasta and it’s amazing. I wasn’t expecting a whole crab but it just came like this! A pleasant surprise.

Amazing food at great value with friendly service. Ordered the blue crab pasta in tomato cream sauce, and it came with juicy chunks of sweet crab cooked in its shell. The appetiser platter consisting of salmon, octopus, herring and pickled radish was a show stopper as well. Will definitely be back in the future. As other reviewers have pointed out, the restaurant only has 1 chef so please be patient.

Prepare for the wait as there is only one chef. But for us i think it wss worthed the wait. Best dish was the grilled pork. it was juicy and tender. Spaghetti nero was good but portion could be bigger. Pizza Caprissiosa was good and thin. Dinner was great, we don't speak much Japanese, but using our phones and the waitresses little bit of English we got there! The food is excellent, with their home made pasta (fresh style) being the perfect amount of chewy. I got the small dinner set, while my partner ordered Al la carte. The pear gellato! They must use some kind of magic. It's the most pear flavoured gellato or food I've had. Better than a real pear!

The takana mayonnaise offal rice was way too salty and the set of 5 skewers was relatively tasteless. The compulsory entrance fee of ¥500 will get you a cheese base starter which is quite rich and tasty for cheese lovers. The large colon taste good. And the egg yolk meatball was again too salty. The eatery is renowned for its delectable seafood bowls and offers a lunch menu priced at 500 yen. One of their specialties is the homemade soy sauce-marinated salmon roe, which boasts a unique flavor exclusive to the restaurant. We came during winter so waiting outside with heavy snow can be quite freezing. The food are made and serve by 2 people (presumably owners) and they are considered old so waiting time can be around 15-20 mins. But it worth the wait, very delicious warm food. Choose the set meal with grilled fish. They taste superb. Drinks are free. It has clean toilet inside too. We ordered 4 different set meals ✓ Pork ginger 7.5/10 ✓ Grilled fish soba type 8/10 ✓ Grilled fish mackerel type 9/10 ✓ Karaage chicken 7/10 Must come to Otaru to eat this. Small shop with a bar counter and 2 tables, so do note that it may take a while to be seated during peak hours. I had the kaisendon and my partner had the fried chicken set. An absolute gem of a traditional Japanese lunch restaurant in the middle of the touristy Otaru town. We had a delightful lunch at this place. A few small tables, older couple owners, and fabulous options. When you walk in, there is a machine to order from. Match the item numbers on the machine to the photos of food above. We zoomed into the fish options, and there were plenty: two kinds of mackerel fillet, cooked salmon fillet, and raw sashimi on rice bowl. We choose both kinds of grilled mackerel. The lunch set then includes rice, miso, pickles and a small salad of leek. Extra sides are available, and we tried the delightful silken tofu with Benito and leek topping, and ordered an extra mackerel fillet too (a neat protein boost if you have a bit appetite). Even so, the total cost was still very expensive. Every dish was lightly prepared, fresh ingredients, and extremely tasty. Check out this delightful establishment on your day trip to Otaru.

We had a reservation for lunch and they accommodated our request for a counter seat. They're also very accessible via the bus that leaves from Otaru station, and they have 2 nearby bus stops that also returns to the station. Despite us being foreigners, they were very accommodating, and the head chef even made casual talk with us despite the language barrier. Hands down the best meal we had in Hokkaido. We walked in without a reservation at around 1145am and were immediately seated at a table near the counter. Definitely not a touristy spot (unlike much of otaru), and the distance (around a 15 minute drive from the city) is definitely worth the travel for the quality of food you’re getting. We ordered the 14 and 12 piece nigiri sets, which featured mostly the same nigiri. The 14 piece set came with zuke (pickled tuna) and shako (mantis shrimp) which the 12 piece did not have. The set comes with miso soup. All of the seafood here was AMAZINGLY fresh. The sushi was constructed well and did not fall apart, with a tailored amount of wasabi placed inside each nigiri. Great textures with no unpleasant fishiness at all across every single nigiri. A stand out to us was the anago. We’ve previously had decent experiences with eel (both unagi and anago) in Japan, but nothing compares to what they served here. We have NEVER had anago as supple (almost melty) as this. The chef was friendly as well and was happy to have us there even if we were not Japanese.

We looked through google to find this shop, to our surprise the food here blew our mind. 🤯our objective is to find a good shop out of the city, its not along the river of Otaru so its not so touristy, the chefs and the waitress are certainly very welcoming although we are a foreigner. I will 💯 definitely recommend the sushi set, the seafood are very fresh, sauce is great too. Definitely order the boiled octupus too, it is out of this world, texture wise it is as soft as sweet potato, and tempura 🍤 is very crispy. Sake? Oh you dont need me to comment you knew it is good if you are in Japan. Toilet experience 👍🏻- good as well as they have a good heated toilet with Toto Neorest. I wanted to thank the chefs and waitress for showing their great hospitality and definitely will return.

Otarutakeno Sushi offers a serene dining experience with its wooden interiors and soft lighting. The restaurant prides itself on serving delectable sushi crafted from fresh seafood sourced from the nearby areas, including sea urchin, mantis shrimp, botan shrimp, and scallops. Despite the high quality of the dishes, the prices are quite reasonable. Otaru's rich history as a former herring fishing hub adds to the charm of visiting this eatery.
Super nice and warm staff. Came in late near the closing hours and chef welcomed us in with a smile. Food was great and reasonably priced.

🍣If you’re craving good sushi, this place won’t disappoint! The fish was fresh, well-made, and everything tasted great. I would probably just grill the sushi a bit more (but that is just how I personally like having it) Also, heads-up —if you’re not big on wasabi (like me), ask for little or none in the sushi because it felt quite overpowering/strong. 👤Service was good— they give you a hot towel and tea to start, which was a nice touch. The vibe was cozy too, with low, chill music in the background. 💲Price-wise, it’s ok I guess..around A$25 for 8 pieces of sushi and A$9 for chicken karaage. Not the cheapest, but the quality and experience make it worth it!

Before returning home I saw this nice sushi place. The Chef is very friendly but professional . I ordered the seafood bowl #15 and enjoyed it. It feels a little less touristy than some places so I liked it. I had fun chatting with the Takeno team and the Mountain Man. :)

Love the Ainori Don where I get to choose the ingredients I want in my don. The Uni was fresh and yummy!! Overall the sashimi is great! The tempura was very nice as well. The assorted tempura has crab leg tempura inside. Super yummy!! Definitely worth visiting!

Ordered salmon sushi, tempura mixed, grilled salmon, and few other dishes. The salmon sushi was good, and mixed tempura was fantastic. The tempura was lightly batter but still maintain the moist and crispiness to the dish. The salmon is the sushi was fresh. Overall, we were happy with the food.

(Translated by Google) I had heard that famous restaurants were full, but locals also go there. I went here on a weekday, so I was alone until the end, but the ingredients were good and I got to have two chefs all to myself, so it was great. I had something that is unique to Otaru. I also went to Shakotan, so I tried different sea urchins, and although they were different in size, they were sweet and delicious. I put sea urchin in the sauce for the sea urchin and squid somen, and ate them all together. Sea urchin tofu, raw oysters, herring, mantis shrimp, squid ears, The salmon in the soup that was served at the end was fatty and delicious, so I asked about it and was told it was seasonal salmon, which was also very tasty. The price was reasonable, which was good too.

(Translated by Google) I went to Shikama Sushi, a long-established sushi restaurant in Otaru, and tried the popular "Shikama Nigiri" menu item. It was a lovely, warm restaurant where I was able to enjoy fresh seafood. [Food] This time, I ordered the restaurant's most popular item, the "Shikama Nigiri." It was a luxurious meal packed with seasonal Hokkaido ingredients, including sea urchin, salmon roe, crab, scallops, herring roe, and sweet shrimp. The freshness of the ingredients was undeniable, and the sea urchin in particular was rich and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The chef's careful work was evident, and the combination of each ingredient and the rice was exquisite. I was captivated by every last bite. The accompanying shrimp-broth miso soup was also comforting, further enhancing my satisfaction. [Drinks] To accompany my meal, I ordered a bottle of beer. The ice-cold beer paired perfectly with the sushi—the perfect combination. They also have a wide selection of local sake, so I'd definitely like to try some next time. [Restaurant Ambience] This time, I enjoyed a relaxing meal at a table on the second floor. The calm atmosphere allowed for leisurely conversation while enjoying my meal. The impressive red noren curtain on the exterior gives the restaurant the air of a traditional sushi restaurant. The storefront was lined with elaborate food samples of sushi and seafood bowls, building my excitement even before entering. [Service] The staff were all warm and polite, making even first-time visitors feel at ease. The explanations and timing of the sushi were perfect, making for a pleasant experience. It's easy to see why this restaurant has been a long-time favorite with both tourists and local regulars alike. [Overall Review] The food, atmosphere, and service were all top-notch, making this a must-visit restaurant when visiting Otaru. I would confidently recommend it to tourists as well. It was a wonderful sushi restaurant that I'd like to return to in a different season. (Translated by Google) To be honest, the first bite of sushi didn't really have a Hokkaido feel to it. Eating sushi at the counter was, well, average. Well, it's Hokkaido after all. That's my impression. It's true that counter sushi offers great value for money. The best part was the zangi. The zangi here is the best fried chicken I've ever had. When I asked the chef about wine, he said he doesn't know anything about wine! The delicious sushi I had remembered had completely gone from my mind... The crab miso tofu was delicious! And then the bill... It seemed so expensive, I mustered up the courage to ask if there was anything strange about it, but he said, "No, no!" I reassured him, and when I checked the bill, the 5,000 yen bill was split into two. He apologized... It was a simple bill, so I felt a little uneasy about the sushi.

3 little Aunties in the kitchen giving friendly service to tourists. We each had the set price sashimi bowls just so yummy n fresh. The beer was great too. Besides the Sapporo we also tried the local pilsner. Very tiny place with 6 tiny tables. No one speaks english... dont worry just point to the pictures on the wall. Fish was fresh and the portion is huge. Definitely a good value option at the Sankaku Market. Only pity is that it isn't served with vinigeared rice. There is no English menu but you can point at the item that you want to order. We had salmon+scallopa+ikura, snow crab+botan ebi+scallops, and grilled hokke sets. Special mention to the grilled fish as it was fresh, flakey and perfectly seasoned. Excellent!

Cafe Bar & Hostel [石と鉄 STONE and IRON] is a unique spot in Otaru that offers a candlelit atmosphere, delicious homemade food, and wonderful music. The Western-style restaurant, opened in 2009 by a chef with extensive training, serves carefully prepared dishes using selected ingredients. This beautiful old grain warehouse has been transformed into a modern cafe and hostel that highlights the building's history.
I’m very impressed by these 4 young enthusiastic chefs/ staff/ boss. They cooperated really well and never paused for a second. Like the open kitchen and cozy vibes of this place! Love the sea urchin toast as well as seafood pasta! Strongly recommend everyone to this hidden gem in Otaru!

We came for dinner visiting Otaru for the long weekend - so not sure about rooms (if there were any). The staff & room were both excellent, accommodating a vegetarian pizza option where requested as well. As a family of four, we did order a variety of things - the pastas , pizza, salad & potato gratin & parfait dessert was excellent - as was the hot wine! Just the right amount of sweet. The portions were generous & filling for our two teenagers. I would happily come back here, the English speaking staff also made communication easier. The signage is subtle , so use Google navigation.

Excelent restaurant! We had the beef curry, the napolitan & sea food pasta, and the smoked ham and salmon salad, and all the three dishes were amazing! Don't let the steel door fool you. It looks like a wall. Just put your shoulder into it and you will find yourself in a chic, industrial space with warm Edison bulbs overhead. The open kitchen allows patrons to watch the staff make their drinks and food. The four staff I saw were young, dedicated, and loved their work. They are passionate about their work, and I could taste that. The venison was perfect and juicy, and the seafood aquapazz was delightful. All ingredients were local from Hokkaido. A great experience. I recommend this restaurant as the best in Otaru.

Otaru Muse is a charming Western-style restaurant in Otaru, established in 2009 by a chef with extensive training and his candle artist wife. The cozy atmosphere, delicious homemade food made from carefully selected ingredients, and live music make it a unique dining experience. Guests praise the expertly prepared dishes, including aged meats cooked over a log fire and fresh pasta with delicate cream sauce.
Seafood pasta is yummy. The creamy sauce used the Hokkaido milk. The pasta is fresh and soft. Baked seafood and potatoes is must-try. The melted cheese is so crispy and tasty. The steak has a charcoal favor and perfectly cooked. Snow crab salad is fresh and delicious. I would like to know the recipe of the tasty salad sauce. Highly recommended and will certainly visit again. Btw, the building is a heritage and added a nice atmosphere. The dishes are not expensive, just 14,000 yen for 5 dishes. I just picked a relatively expensive local wine of 11,000 yen.

Soy butter pasta was absolutely amazing. The taste was something new I’ve nvr tried before and a definite umami treat. Noodles were very good although I have to doubt if they were pasta or actually ramen. Nevertheless, credit to the chef for such excellent delivery of noodles. Cream pasta was light infused with the taste of seafood. Noodles were light and springy that soaked up the cream well. Was here at about 12+ and the fried seafood curry was sold out

A family run small scale restaurant specialised in italian food. Visited for lunch intended to have a taste of something vary from Japanese food. There were different choices of pasta in the menu. We eventually chose sea urchin and white bait creamy spaghetti and clams and prawns spaghatti in tomato sauce. We chose the sets which came with a small salad, soup, dessert and drink at an additional cost. The spaghatti were extremely tasty, so as the soup and dessert. The price was reasonable to our standard, too. We enjoyed the meal a lot and would not hesitate to introduce the restaurant to others.

The background music in the restaurant is the best soul jazz to enjoy the food, and you can feel the owner's hospitality, which enhances the lunch atmosphere. For lunch, we recommend the set menu where you can choose a main dish (seasonal soup, salad, small dessert, coffee or tea) [Bitter hamburger steak with beef tongue] The texture of the hamburger is chewy, and unlike any other hamburger I've had before, you can feel the craftsmanship. The golden ratio of minced beef tongue, beef, and pork is a tribute to the owner's passion for food. ``Soup'' is a soup made with fresh onions and potatoes, which is subtly sweet and floats gently in your mouth, and ``Dessert'', honey ice cream, has a smooth texture, and the sweetness of the honey adds to the final aftertaste of the piece. The attitude is awwwwwwwweful! We never expected to be treated it like that. First, we wait for a long time to order, and I feel disrespectful cause I didn’t feel like we are welcoming. We ordered 3 hot pot and wait for it for 30minutes even tho we had made a reservation first. The last hot pot even wait 20minutes longer than the first one. So most of us are starving and the hot pot taste plain. You can’t taste any chicken soup flavor in it. The staff is rude when they introduced how to eat the hot pot. They poured soy sauce in our bowl and we don’t have an extra bowl having soup. Next dishes also wait for 10 minutes longer, we ordered only 4 dishes but we wait for 1.5 hours to get everything_….. It’s my worst dining experience that I’ve encountered in Japan.

However, the portion size was rather small for the price, and you'll likely need to supplement your meal with additional dishes if you have a decent appetite. Service was adequate, though the staff seemed a bit weary, likely due to the busy night and the heavy snowfall outside.

A cozy small restaurant, tucked behind a dark alley. We wanted to explore local restaurant experience. There is no English menu available. Google translation was of great help. Our 2 young waiters were trying their best to understand what our order was. We were happy with the food, this is a speciality restaurant in chicken dishes. We ordered the chicken fried rice, rich chicken soup broth with tofu with cabbage and mushroom. We also had fried chicken parts and cartilage of the chicken breast one. I find the chicken meat in Hokkaido is tender and soft, even is they were fried. We enjoyed the simplicity in local restaurant and the great customer service we got even without english speaking waiters. They served several alcoholic drinks, we had gin and also otaru beer. Overall very happy dining experience.

Sushi Takutsu is a popular sushi restaurant located in Otaru, Hokkaido, known for its authentic and delicious sushi experience. Situated near Otaru Station and Otaru Canal, this small eatery with only 6 counter seats offers a wide selection of fresh and delectable sushi. The chef's smooth and efficient movements while preparing the dishes reflect his passion for sushi, food, and alcohol.
Very small Japanese restaurant inside a small centre which closes its doors at 21:00. It has only 6 spots, so make sure to reserve yours in advance. The owners are extremely friendly and doing their best to make sure everything is top-notch. The sushi and sashimi are very good and have unique fresh flavours. There is also a set menu. Good wines to have, too. We had a great experience and ate a lot since we wanted to taste everything, that's why we paid above average. It was worth it!!! Thanks
URI G — Google review
A hidden gem next to Otaru JR station. The small 6 seater run by a lovely couple is the best counter nigiri sushi restaurant we have had in Hokkaido and rivals the top sushi joints in all of Japan. We have eaten plenty of top rated sushi restaurants around the world and this chef humbly puts many of them to shame. It could be the ready access to the fresh seasonal produce from Hokkaido but his techniques and pairing with the aromatics and toppings made each bite so delicious and balanced. Both lunch and dinner are priced very reasonably and we couldn't stop ordering more extras to try! Will definitely be back everything we are here in Otaru.

Excellent experience!!! Soooo lucky that I can reserve seats to try this boutique sushi restaurant with 6 seats only. Very satisfied with the lunch sushi set, 12 pcs with unusual delicate taste. Hidden gem in Otaru!!! Would definitely visit again when I go to otaru!!

I don’t usually write reviews but this place was amazing! I feel compelled to praise the owners, who were lovely. The food is excellent. It’s a very small restaurant with only 6 sushi counter seats. My friend and I had the omakase menu. The 3 starter dishes and 10-pieces of sushi that are part of the omakase menu that we had was slightly fusion, so only go to this place if you are open to slightly different flavours. Each dish was executed well and the taste combinations worked. In addition to a few sakes and beers, the restaurant also offers wine by the glass and bottles. Price is very reasonable for the quality.
Vic P — Google review
Absolutely delightful time here The omakase was prepared so beautifully and with the freshest ingredients! The chef, who honed his skills for about 10 years in Toyako Town, meticulously prepares each dish while his wife adds an artistic touch with her candles.
Delicious omurice and spaghetti, demi-glace sauce on the omelette was the quality you’d expect from a michellin star fine dining restaurant. For the price, this restaurant is the best of the best.

Very delish western-Japanese/wine bar. The restaurant has a modern feel and so do the dishes. Everything was delicious - especially the roast venison, omurice ketchup and fish carpaccio. The ambiance of the restaurant is warm and has a nice buzz to it. We managed to do a walk in and sat at the bar.

A previous random find. We were the last customers and the chef/owner/staff had made one of the best dinner we had in Hokkaido. The omu rice was really delicious. Everything was made perfectly.
Foong L — Google review
This hole-in-the-wall spot offers a variety of Omurice styles, from demi-glace and tomato sauce to a European-style curry. We had the chance to try all three, and the standout was easily the Tomato Omurice. The rich curry notes combined with the tangy acidity of the tomato created a perfect harmony in every bite. Before having the main course, you’re served a complimentary bowl of Vichyssoise—a cold potato soup that’s creamy, slightly sweet, and a surprisingly refreshing start to the meal. It’s not something you’d typically expect but sets the tone for a unique dining experience. To finish off, we couldn’t resist the Crème Brûlée. The caramelised top had the perfect crunch, and breaking through it to reveal the smooth vanilla custard beneath was simply amazing. It was a sweet and satisfying conclusion to the meal.

Amazing, best omurice and crème brulé that I can recall. The staff were very friendly and had a lot of patience for my poor Japanese. It opens quite late, and we were struggling to find somewhere. It is off the beaten path, I definitely will recommend it to my friends who go to Hokkaido.

Just hopped in this small bistro, a one man show by the chef from cleaning to cooking to serving. He tried to give you the best service though service is not his forte given he is not a chatty person. He was very serious with his cooking. You could hear all the egg mixing, utensil clanking sounds orchestrated from the small but well equipped kitchen. The food was beyond our expectation as they were all very very good. The Caesar salad was well sauced. The pasta was just right. The fish was skin-fried with the texture of the body preserved well with tenderness. The steak was just made to perfection. The omelette was fiddling with the juicy rice when cut through. We were still unsure about ordering dessert at this moment as we were all very full already. A restaurant decorated with an oldies vibe which is meticulously cared to the finest details of the chef. A dream restaurant of Chef Kinoshita!

We had our dinner here which was our first meal in Otaru. The fried rice with egg omelet is perfect. Also the meat ball and Crème brûlée are both delicious. There is only the owner working in the restaurant, but the service is very considerate. He will look after us and serve the dishes at the appropriate timing. The interior of the space is also very nice with its antique atmosphere. Very enjoyable night here.

Seafood donburi restaurant
Kaisenya Yoshidon is a restaurant located just a 9-minute walk from JR Otaru Station and serves high-quality seafood at more affordable prices compared to its main branch. Despite being underrated and not as well-known due to its location, the restaurant offers exceptional fresh and tasty seafood, with their Hokkai-don being the best-selling item on the menu. The small shop may be easily missed when passing by, but it is highly recommended for its friendly staff and brilliant food.
This place is underrated and I personally give them a 5 star. I researched this place before going to Hokkaido as it was one of the recommended places to eat in Otaru. Location wise it’s probably not anywhere near Sakaimachi street and that’s why not many people know of them, plus the shop is tiny it can easily be missed when walking past. The best selling item on their menu is the ‘Hokkai-don’, which consist of generous crab, salmon roe and sea urchin for ¥3800. We also tried the sea urchin set which mainly was just a box of sea urchin with rice on the side and miso soup for ¥5000. I did not think this was expensive compared to a few pieces or sea urchin at Hakodate morning markets for ¥1200. The seafood is amazing, it’s so delicious that it melts in your mouth and the most important thing is it’s fresh. The grilled squid was also prepared beautifully and delicious. If you plan to go Otaru, go here first for lunch then spend the rest of the afternoon strolling along Sakaimachi street.

(Translated by Google) It's on the same road as Sushi Shop Street, near the canal. The atmosphere is easy to enter. There were counters, but most of them were slightly raised. I thought the seafood bowl was cheap at 2500 yen. It was limited to 20 meals, but there were still some available at 1:30 p.m. I didn't feel like the rice was small, and it felt like a normal amount. Is the seafood okay? I was not impressed and thought it was relatively similar to what I would eat at home. I was carrying ingredients from a nearby affiliated sushi restaurant. It was nice to be able to use regional coupons. Teppanyaki restaurant Cocoro Grand Park Otaru offers a delightful dining experience that showcases the best of Hokkaido's culinary treasures. Nestled within the elegant Hotel Grand Park, this gem is conveniently located just a short stroll from Otaru Chikko Station. Guests can indulge in an exquisite course meal prepared right before their eyes on a large semi-circular iron plate, featuring fresh local ingredients like Kitayori shellfish and sweet shrimp.
(Translated by Google) The prestigious hotel has an authentic teppanyaki restaurant, and I have used it occasionally in Sapporo and Hakodate, but this was my first time enjoying teppanyaki in Otaru. Today's course uses Hokkaido ingredients. From appetizers. Composed of fresh and safe ingredients such as Kitayori shellfish, sweet shrimp, and local vegetables, the main dish is precious Ezo abalone steak and A5 rank Shiraoi beef sirloin! Based on my impressions of this day, I think the abalone is the best! The unique texture of abalone and the softness that cannot be enjoyed raw made the steak even more flavorful. This is a masterpiece that you should definitely try! The teppanyaki style has a lively feel, and you can enjoy the sounds and aromas of cooking even before you eat, which will whet your appetite! The chef's behavior was also great. After finishing the meal with garlic rice (it was fluffy and delicious), which is always a secret pleasure of Teppanyaki, We moved to a bar in the hotel with a nice atmosphere and had dessert, which is something that can only be done at a hotel! Isezushi is a renowned sushi restaurant located in Otaru, known for its minimalist decor and elevated sushi dishes. Since 1967, it has been a favorite among locals, offering an intimate dining experience where guests can sit at the counter and watch the skillful chefs at work. The head chef, Takahiro Koise, values friendly conversation with guests as part of the dining experience.
Loved the experience. Intimate and engaging. The chef made sure I understood everything in English. Super kind service. They even prepared a set up for when we arrive to the restaurant to find our names engraved on a piece of paper right on the table were you are meant to sit

Having omakase in Otaru is an absolute must—and this spot truly delivered. We are lucky to have made reservation here! The sushi and uni were incredibly fresh, with each piece showcasing the quality and simplicity of the ingredients. They don’t serve soy sauce here, as they want you to fully appreciate the natural flavors of the sushi—and it really makes a difference. For foreigners, they offer an English menu, which makes the experience even more accessible and enjoyable. The price point is also worth highlighting—it’s incredibly reasonable for the quality you’re getting. You’d be paying significantly more for something like this in Singapore. Even now, the taste still lingers in my mind. If I return to Otaru in the future, this will definitely be on my list again!

We booked the Omakases course for 3 pax months in advance. Arrived on a Saturday in mid oct during Autumn and the place is full. Service is okay but the food is really delicious. We love the grilled monk fish and sushi . Its great value as the course would have costs us twice as much at where we come from .

The reservation was moderately hard to get, but if I’m being honest, I’m not entirely sure why. The sushi was decent, nothing special. I particularly enjoyed the chawanmushi. If you are just looking for good fish/food, I am sure there are plenty of other spots in Otaru/Tokyo that would do at a more casual and affordable prices.

Blessed to have 2 of the only 6 counter seats in the entire restaurant. We really enjoyed the omakase experience by chef nakamura. The sake are of good quality. It ain’t cheap but it will be a memorable night if you can dine here. Good luck trying to get a reservation!

trekked here through snow and it was 100% worth it. they have a michelin star for a reason. their sushi was impeccably fresh and the most delicious i have ever had in my whole sushi-eating lifetime. we were a walk in and came in right at their opening time. thankfully they had seats for us and at the counter too. as i am gluten intolerant i asked if it was ok to use my own gluten free soy sauce that i had bought and they allowed me to do so. they were able to speak in english too. they were aware of gluten allergies so even though i also wanted the ise course they advised that i get their omakase course instead (as the ise course comes with soy sauce painted on the sushi). they also provided substitutes so i didnt feel like i was missing out. the photos uploaded are just a few of many including stuff that my companion had. truthfully words are not enough to describe how fantastic the food is here. their service is also very friendly and the courses are well worth the price (imo it's actually quite affordable for fine dining).

Waraku Kaiten Sushi is a popular conveyor belt sushi restaurant located in an old stone storehouse. The place offers a wide selection of sushi with a focus on seasonal ingredients, and it's known for its spacious and comfortable atmosphere. While some may not appreciate the unconventional combinations like mayonnaise aburi types, others find them interesting and delicious. Additionally, the restaurant is praised for its affordable prices and friendly staff.
Good place for sushi and at reasonable prices. Can either pick your choice off the conveyor belt or order directly with the server. Soba and udon are also available. Restaurant does not accept credit cards and only cash payment is accepted. Be prepared to wait during peak hours.

Incredible. We weren’t super hungry because of a late lunch and we walked past this place and found out it was a sushi train. The most delicious aburi salmon and tempura prawn. I loved every plate. Super fresh, high quality and cheap as well! Amazing!

It’s apparently a very local kaiten sushi establishment with shops only in Otaru and Sapporo. You can get a number to queue (but unable to check progress of queue) good thing the waiting area is quite massive as we ended up waiting around an hour. The sushi is fresh and delicious. But depending on your allergy to waiting, it might not be the place for you.

Tried sushi for the very first time in Japan at Waraku Kaiten Sushi in Otaru. Sushi was super fresh and tasty. The salmon just melted in my mouth, uni (sea urchin) had a rich creamy flavor, and that wasabi gave a proper surprise kick 😅. The best part was picking plates directly from the conveyor belt — such a fun and unique experience! Very different from our Indian spicy flavors, but a must-try food adventure.
Rochak S — Google review
This place isn’t bad at all. The nigiri, I felt like the rice-to-fish ratio was a bit off — there was a little too much rice compared to the sashimi portion. I hate to say it, but I didn’t really care for the tuna. The chu-toro was a bit disappointing, and the regular tuna didn’t stand out either. My favorite was actually the salmon — that one was great. The hotate (scallop) was surprisingly good too, not the usual kind I get but still enjoyable. I also tried the uni, and while it wasn’t bad, I feel like they kind of skimped a little on the portion. Personally, I still prefer Santa Barbara uni, but for what it was, it wasn’t terrible. Overall, if you’re on a bit of a budget and want a decent sushi experience with good variety, this place is worth trying.

If you're looking for a top-notch seafood dining experience, look no further than 海鮮食堂澤崎水産 3号店. Despite the cozy and traditional Japanese eatery ambiance, the food quality is exceptional. Although there might be a wait during peak times, the attentive staff ensures efficient service. The highlight is watching your meal being prepared right in front of you, guaranteeing freshness and transparency in ingredients.
This place is really small but cozy. We were there at around 1pm during lunch time. The wait was short. The seafood was really fresh. The crab was very tasty and so were the salmon, tuna and the sweet raw shrimps. We had sashimi rice at different locations in Sapporo and found that this place had the freshest and best tasting sashimi bowl. The price is higher if you order uni (sea urchin) or crab. Note that this place is not good for big groups as the space is very tight and there are around 10-12 spaces.

Good seafood rice bowls, it’s a small store but was quite empty when we visited for an early dinner around 5pm+ 👍 Portion wise, it’s not very big and the price is on the steeper side (9000YEN for the uni one) but it’s fresh so we like it still. If you don’t eat anything raw, the only option would be the crab bowl which is quite delicious!! Half of the meat is marinated in a special sauce while for the other half you get to enjoy the original flavours of the crab meat.
Dolce B — Google review
Got in as the first group of customers of the day, we ordered 4 sets of 特選ちらし丼 (¥5200). It was totally out of our expectations for the freshness and sweetness of all the seafood. It was really good and memorable for the trip! Tasty miso soup was also served together as a set. The chef was very friendly as well. Highly recommended to those who wish to try different kinds of Hokkaido seafood ✨

The seats are at the counter bar so you can see chef preparing don for us. The price is quite expensive compare to the size and taste.

Probably the worst and most expensive meal we had in Hokkaido. Expensive never mind, the quality and taste of food are at no match for the high price. For silly tourist like us, it just felt like we have fallen into this tourist trap with our both eyes opened. Stall too small. When we arrived there were 3 young Singaporeans girls sitting next to us. Plus three of us so total 6 silly Singaporeans were there quietly eating our expensive Donburi. Where were the locals??? None because they all probably known that this place is to cut tourists throats only 😅😂

It’s a tight squeeze in the shop, like a traditional Japanese eatery, but it’s worth it for the food quality. We had to wait for about 20 minutes when we arrived at about 1115 in Winter. The staff are very attentive, and the food is served very efficiently. The food is prepared right in front of you and you know exactly what goes into your bowl. Definitely worth the wait too.

Very strategic location, right across Otaru canal meeting point and information center. Cute blue small shophouse you can't miss. The food is, despite the rave and reviews, average for me. We had Uni/ikura bowl and Kaisenchirashi. Fish were fresh and creamy which is standard for Hokkaido. The rice doesnt really go well with fish, not good texture. Scallop was the best of all - fresh, crunchy and sweet. We spent 1 night in Otaru and shakotan and tried 3 shops for same types of bowl. This one was the highest in review score yet the least Favourite.

Takinami Donburi Restaurant, located in the Otaru Fish Market, is a bustling spot known for its delectable rice bowls topped with an array of fresh seafood, including raw fish and sea urchin. The restaurant operates on a unique system where patrons write down their name and party size before placing their order with the staff. Despite the popularity of this establishment, the queue moves swiftly and diners are typically seated within 30 to 50 minutes.
Yes, we went in to eat there knowing it was a tourist trap, BUT we were still happy to chopped with a bit pricier seafood; it was well worth every yen. The freshness and the selection were unbeatable and so satisfying. We picked the snow crab from the stall across then this place cooked it. All sashimi ordered were ultra fresh.
Mei S — Google review
It’s a bit of tourist trap, but still they serve fresh local sashimi / sushi. The seafood don and uni sashimi were great, the crab miso soup was amazing. The local fish market ambience gives authentic feels. It may not be for everyone though. Price is not cheap, but not crazy expensive either. Note: they have a nice queing system, take number, pre-order, and comeback when your number is getting closer (you can scan the ticket to check the queue).

Excellent kaisendon - the best I have tested. It’s fresh and well plated. This place is very popular. There is a queue system with chairs for those who are waiting. There are 2 eating areas - the main shop and an eating area opposite. The place is cramped. Service is very average, though. Very transactional. Thus explains the 4 star rating. Recommended if you can ignore their service. On the whole, the food was great!
Ron Y — Google review
I went to this Kaisendon place I found online, and honestly, it lived up to the hype! I got the donburi with 10 different types of seafood — not the most expensive one, but close — for ¥5,500, and it was totally worth it. Don’t be fooled by the photos; it might look small, but it’s actually packed with rice and loaded with seafood. You’ll be stuffed after finishing it — I’d say have it for brunch because it’ll probably keep you full the whole day (especially if you’ve got a regular metabolism). They really pack in the rice to balance all the seafood, which I actually liked. And if you’re not into sushi rice, you can even ask for regular rice instead. I also got the crab miso soup. It was delicious, but be ready to do a bit of work getting the crab meat out. Overall, it was so satisfying and definitely worth it. If you’re in Otaru or anywhere in Hokkaido, you’ve gotta try it!
Yoshie K — Google review
The freshest seafood you can get in Hokkaido. It is one of the restaurants in the seafood market. You can cut your own Mantis shrimp or let them cut it for you for an extra 40 yen each. We did it by ourselves after a little YouTube tutorial.
Jason L — Google review
There was already a queue when I arrived around 915am. You’ll need to get the waiting number from the machine first and then a staff will come and take your order. But they still will only make your food once you are seated. Seatings rather limited all were tables of four. So even if you are travelling in one pax / 2 you will end up using the table of 4 for yourself. Maybe that’s one of the reason the waiting time was so long. Perhaps the owner can consider smaller seatings / counter seats for solo or 2 pax traveler. Food wise - price point was high but fresh nonetheless. You can order the set meal donburi or customised your own toppings. I opted for the smaller portion bowl but even so it’s still big. Salmon was buttery. Fish roe was juicy and didn’t have that fishy smell. Uni was fresh and flavourful. Crab was fluffy. I also added on their local hakkaku sashimi - tasted a little firm and flavour profile more like flounder but it’s a good try. Scallop was big and juicy. Oyster was fresh but slightly more expensive compared to other stores. Overall a good store to try but waiting time can be very long. I waited for about 35 mins but some who came much later waited for hours.
Ky Y — Google review
If you plan to eat here, make sure you take a number first by the entrance. I got the pick 3 for 2970yen +550yen for urchin. I can't say I was impressed. Portions wasn't that big. I added 2 sides of scallops, both 440 yen each. The raw one was a little tough ( I didn't expect that), and the cook one was meh (soup in shell, super salty). I think the miso soup was the best thing in the table. In the future, I would order the grilled fish sets like the locals beside me.

Uomasa is a must-visit place for eel lovers, known for their specially made live eel called Tokuchukatsuman. The restaurant offers a complete menu in both Japanese and English, making it accessible to non-Japanese speakers. Visitors praise the fresh ingredients and delicious sushi sets, with particular emphasis on the quality of sashimi. While some recommend making reservations to avoid time limits on dining, others note that the prices are reasonable for the great food quality.
Had lunch at this place twice. The first time was recommended by local friends from Otaru. 2nd time was with my other Japanese friend and Korean friend. We got there before they open at noon, but there were already a waiting line. It moved fairly quickly. Sushi is delicious, and the price is reasonable compared to other sushi restaurants in Otaru. I see that some reviews say they put extensive amounts of wasabi to Korean customers on purpose, but that is definitely not true. They asked if putting wasabi to sushi is okay when we ordered, and we said yes. It seems they put more wasabi for certain sushi generally. It was the same for everyone's dish (my Japanese friend ordered in Japanese).
Rachel N — Google review
We stumbled on this sushi place by chance. Initially we planned to go for another sushi place by searching on Google. Unfortunately the first sushi place was closed (but didn’t show on Google). As Uomasa was close by and was open, we went for it. Ordered two sets of sushi, a sushi bowl and a small grilled cheese potato (that had sea urchin, cheese and corn beef). Sushi and sushi bowl were good. Seafood was fresh and tasty. The grilled potato was unexpected delicious. Service was efficient. Note that last order was at 8pm.

Wanted to try sashimi with cooked menu so tried this restaurant after checking Google. Faced a bit of struggle with the menu as they were mostly in Japanese except for one page of English version. The Otaru Nigiri plate of 12 assorted sashimi were generally tasty but some items may not be ideal as you can specify the choice of seafood. Assorted tempura was good the batter tasted light and overall crispy not too heavy. Grilled salmon & salmon roe don is salty with most of the salmon probably due to the uneven salt seasoning. Service might not be easy if you are seated on the 2nd level as most activities are downstairs.

We made a reservation at my daughter's choice during a family trip. There were separate seating areas for locals and tourists, but we were able to enjoy sashimi platters, sushi, and sake.

I had it for dinner and the sushi set was very delicious. I didn't like crowded places, so he kindly welcomed me even though I went to eat at 4 p.m. early in the evening. The ingredients were very fresh and as soon as I ordered, they made sushi in front of me. I recommend it to those who are vulnerable to fishy taste. The staff are so kind. For your information, there is also a menu in English, so it's okay if you can't speak Japanese.

Otaru Bine is a charming restaurant located in a restored 19th-century bank building, offering a blend of German and Italian cuisine. Despite some references to a German vibe, the atmosphere feels more like a typical Japanese western bistro. The food portions are on the smaller side but are praised for their great taste. In addition to delicious food, the restaurant also boasts an impressive selection of wines and deli items.
the steak and potatoes especially were great. the crab pasta is also first class!
Bryan S — Google review
Love the building: 100 year old bank - rustic charm provided an antiquated, stout reassurance of security that our dining money was in good hands. The tables are spaced a pleasant three metres apart. The wine was a fruity delight. The fondue, I dare say, easily the smoothly cheesiest in all the vast wilderness of Hokkaido. I stake my life on recommending the avocado salad, afore mentioned fondue, and fifteen glasses of the red wine ginger ale cocktail. The night was a veritable feast for the senses.

I have never been treated as evil and cruel as I was by the young male who denied us services at this restaurant because of our race. We enjoyed our days touring Otaru until this moment. August 10 Reply to Owner: Dear Owner, I would be remiss not to respond by saying the restaurant was empty besides one table. We were there that day and we know what we experienced and witnessed. You are using the reservation response to cover up the racism used to deny us equal services. The employee did NOT ask us ONCE if we had a reservation. We were clearly denied services because of our race and you know it. You should be ashamed of your practices. I believe in God. God knows all. He sees all. A very nice dining experience here. We had the seafood sukiyaki which had king crab, abalone, mussels, clams and red snapper. The soup was sweet and filled with the flavours of the seafood. We also had the unagi tempura don and mixed tempura don, both were very tasty as well. Tempura was done very well. Overall good lunch and great service.

Proper, classic Japanese sushi with plenty of quality sushi being offered. Otaru being a sea port, rest assured that the quality of the seafood is legit. Moreover, if you are a lover of uni, do visit Fujisushi as well because their signature is actually their uni! Overall, expect everything classic and proper with no surprises. Fun fact, the seating is actually on tatami, but with short chairs so that's cool :) Arigatogozaimasu!

The best sashimi and tempura that I had on this trip to Japan. The fish slices were fresh, thick, and tasty. The wasabi is of good quality. The batter for the tempura is fresh and fluffy dipped in fresh oil. Chawanmushi is piping hot even when taken towards the end the meal. It would be better if it were savory rather than sweetish. I ended the meal with a miso soup with tofu. As pricey as in the better Jap restaurants in Singapore. But, it's worth the price. Bon appetit !

Japanese restaurant
Kaitenzushi Uoisshin Otaruten is a popular sushi restaurant known for its torched salmon with mayo and accommodating staff. It's a great place to enjoy affordable and delicious sushi, with many customers visiting multiple times a week. The restaurant offers high-quality dishes, including conveyor belt sushi that receives rave reviews. Visitors also appreciate the opportunity to eat local fresh fish, particularly enjoying the very good clams served at the restaurant.
Fabulous place! Good service, tasty, and easy.
Michael Y — Google review
The food was ok, however the uni and a few other things were overpriced and not fresh tasting. The people that work there (primarily the female servers) are shockingly rude and incredibly racist against foreigners. I went twice, and was gravely disappointed by the service and the way I was treated both times. Additionally, they stop serving drinks at 7:15 and food at 7:30 PM, when the restaurant is the most busy with dinner guests. They don’t just stop taking orders, but they promptly cut off service and kick you out of the restaurant quite rudely. Awful experience for a sushi establishment in Otaru, where there are many other fantastic options with better food and better service, who are happy to have customers.

Their torched samon with mayo is super good and staff are really accommodating. I eat here twice a week 😋 I recommend it if you're looking for affordable and delicious sushi.

eat local fresh fish ! very good clams!

The worst sushi I've eaten in my life. Sushi rice supposed to be warm but rice was totally cold. Chawan-mushi was almost sweet as custard pudding. Anyway I do not recommend this restaurant. There is a Hama zushi (100 ¥ sushi) outside of wingbay. This restaurant is 100% better than 魚一心.
Emiko Y — Google review
This is the cheapest conveyor belt sushi shop we’ve dine in our 10 days in Hokkaido. The sushi is all very cheap so just order and eat as much as we can, but of course with the price they we are paying, do not expect very extremely fresh and top quality sushi, but it is still above average on the freshness and quality.

The first time i ate uni sushi was here, and i will never forget my first bite of uni sushi.. so yummy and the uni melted in my mouth, love!!! 😍😍

小樽 日本橋 is a charming restaurant with a friendly staff and skilled chefs. The counter seats offer an engaging dining experience as you can watch the chefs expertly prepare your meal. They serve generous portions of fresh and delicious sushi, offering a variety of seafood options for you to explore. While it may not be the top choice for everyone, the prices are reasonable for the quality of food and service provided at this local gem.
Very nice restaurant, with friendly staffs and chefs✨The seats at the counter are great for show, you can see the chefs preparing your plate in front of you! They give generous size sushi, and the fish are very fresh ✨😋 Various seafoods and assortments, you have the choice, but you can try all the seafoods that you’ve never had!

It was really cold December evening and the kids didn’t want to walk too far from the car. This place is okay, I have had better sushi/sashimi but it was there and didn’t have to wait. If I am back to Otaru, I will likely venture to another sushi place

Chinese Restaurant Keien is a no-frills eatery with a nostalgic ambiance that serves up comforting Chinese and Japanese dishes. It's known for its famous ankake yakisoba, a soul food in Otaru filled with luxurious ingredients like shrimp, pork, and wood ears. The restaurant is located near Otaru Station in an arcade and is popular among both tourists and locals.
中華食堂 桂苑 Established in 1964. Best Ankake Yakisoba & Age soba & Ramen in Otaru. Restaurant was closed during the State of Emergency. So Happy it reopen on the 1st October. Worth the wait! Visited Keien on the 1st day of reopening it's Newly Renovated Chinese Restaurant. Very happy Onwers & repeating Customers. 😃

Ankake ekisoba 烩炒面 was out of this world. The noodle was well fried with wok hei, and the sauce was sticky and flavourful and not salty at all. Generous ingredients with pork slices, capsicum, prawns, bamboo shoot, carrot, and mushrooms. 870 yen per serving was value for money. WOW. 5 stars We were seated immediately on Monday 6pm. Serving within 10 minutes upon ordering. The shop provided english and chinese menu

Very delicious Chinese style yakisoba! You cannot miss it! MUST EAT!! 😬😬

Always enjoy the consistently good food here and reasonable prices. It's always busy with the local folks so that says alot. We just happened to walk in one day and have been going back ever since. The Ankake and Age Yakisoba and gyoza are favorites!

I ordered “yakisoba ankake”. It was super tasty. What I love most is the wok hei and balance of the taste. Good brake from all the seafood in Otaru. Recommend to go for lunch:)

I recently visited Sushidokoro Uoisshin Otarugobangaiten for the first time in years and was pleasantly surprised. The shop offers a variety of fresh sushi at reasonable prices, with a menu that caters to different preferences. I tried the "seafood leaflet" with a companion, and it was worth every yen - the freshness of the ingredients truly shone through in each bite.
(Translated by Google) The interior of the store is chic and calm. Since I was with children, I was shown to a spacious tatami room with a sunken kotatsu! It was for an early dinner, but what a surprise! You can order lunch until 5pm! ! I got a better deal than I expected♪ Fresh seafood and plenty of miso soup with seaweed, surprisingly! ? Delicious soba! I was happy that there was a children's menu as well. It was a long walk from Otaru-Chikko Station, but it was truly Hokkaido! ! I was surprised at how spacious the wing bay was! ! ! I ended up walking from one end to the other, which was a nice way to get my legs tired from skiing lol💦 (Original)

The worst Sushil I've ever eaten in my life. Aji no namerou was too fishy and couldn't eat it. And chawan mushi was sweet as pudding. But the price is not cheap. I definitely recommend Hama sushi where is just outside of wing bay. Don't waste your money here. Spend on something more meaningful.

Food was average. Atmosphere was bad and painfully quiet… the fridge was squeaking in the background.

(Translated by Google) I had the lunch menu and sanma sashimi! The sushi, soba, tempura, chawanmushi, and soup were all delicious! The seasonal sanma sashimi was beautifully presented and had no unpleasant odor. It melted in my mouth without even chewing. 😄 It was so delicious that I'll definitely come back next time I visit Otaru! Thank you for the meal.

(Translated by Google) I ordered a sushi, soba, and tempura lunch set. I wanted chawanmushi, so I ordered it separately. I was surprised when it arrived! ️ The bowl was only the size of my short index finger, and it only took three bites to finish... If it had been included in the set, I'd understand, but it was 400 yen. 😡 That's unbelievable...I feel like I've been ripped off. 💣 I think it's best not to order anything that doesn't have a picture.

(Translated by Google) I stopped by after watching a movie. The affordable lunch menu is sold out. I had the sushi tempura. My wife and Baba moved the soba noodles into my bowl, saying they couldn't eat it even though it was more than normal. It was delicious, but I decided to skip dinner. The movie was good, but so was the sushi.

(Translated by Google) I came here for the first time after 2pm, late for lunch. There was a customer in front of me, but when I looked inside, there were empty seats. After calling out to the staff and telling them that I was waiting but they didn't have any guidance, I finally guided the customer in front of me. Even though the seats were empty, I waited for another 5 minutes until I was called. There seemed to be a long wait at the store on the second floor, so I came here thinking it might be a hidden gem, but it took a surprisingly long time to be shown around. I ordered the special fish Isshin set meal, and it was delicious, and 1,580 yen for sushi, tempura, soba, and chawanmushi was probably a good deal. Although they were attentive and poured us refills of tea, I think it was a little disappointing that the service was so slow. 2024.8.21
