Museums
The Decorative Arts Museum Francois Duesberg is a remarkable collection of 18th and 19th-century decorative arts, featuring an array of exquisite timepieces, statues, jewelry, silverware, porcelain, and other rare objects. The museum is privately run by Baron Francois Duesberg and his wife. It houses a stunning assortment of ornamental clocks from the Napoleonic era, Neoclassical sculptures, and a fantastic display of cameos.
Absolutely fantastic experience! parking in the surrounding streets, if you want to enter you have to knock because the door is closed, a very kind English speaking man opened the door for us and we entered, the entrance fee was higher and you have to pay in cash, but it is definitely worthly, beautifully clean toilets are available, the exhibits are absolutely bombastic, gorgeous, breathtaking, the gentleman will explain to you the history of some special pieces, even though it is only 1 large and a couple of smaller rooms, we spent almost 2 hours there, this is one of the most beautiful museums in Belgium, we felt like we were in a golden kingdom, I highly recommend it, even the children were excited and looked at every smallest piece of this beauty
Marek S — Google review
Worth to visit definitely! Private collection in three rooms, plan at least 1h30 to visit. You will guided by pleasant host who can tell everything about each piece of art! And of course you will meet baron itself, wish him health!
Stasya T — Google review
The Francois Duesberg, is a fantastic museum dedicated to 18th and 19th century decorative arts, with a fine collection of clocks, sculptures and porcelain, ceramics, pottery and jewellery. Some of the most outstanding pieces include rare ornamental clocks from Napoleonic times, fantastic collection of cameos, Neoclassical inspired sculptures, and lots more beautiful things to see. Inside, it’s almost like a palace that even without all the exhibits would be fit for a king to stay in. Myself and several other had to wait 45 minutes over the advertised opening time before being let in, which was a little annoying. The place was opened by an elderly gentleman, I think the owner of the museum. The dude is quite eccentric, tells us no photos, but taking photos seem to be fine if they include him. Normally, I’d deduct a star for this kind of thing, but the museum is awesome.

Military Museums
The Mons Memorial Museum is a modern and spacious museum that delves into the military history of Mons, particularly during the two world wars. It offers a thought-provoking experience for visitors of all ages, encouraging them to explore the complex realities of war. The museum strikes a balance between showcasing military history and presenting personal testimonies from civilians and soldiers. With compelling visuals and an animated 3D film, it brings to life the experiences of those who lived through World War I.
Very nice and informative exposition about the local wars through history and the world war. Very nice staff as well. Absolutely suggested if you're interested in history and military history specifically
雷聲 — Google review
Very informative and interesting. Runs along a time line from the 18th century but is mostly WW1 and WW2. Well worth watching the documentary in the room on the right past the ticket office. This explains a lot about the Belgian resistance. The low lighting, probably to protect the exhibits, does make some plaques difficult to read. Easy enough to spend 3 hours reading. Toilets clean. Friendly staff.
Miles F — Google review
Interesting museum of local war history. Museum is well laid out and presented very well Take in the video at the start. I usually bypass these but glad I watched this one as it led me on an extended tour of the area. After viewing I decided I had to visit the grave of Marguerite Bervoets a local hero. Interred in the nearby cemetery Cimeterie de Mons where I paid my respects.😔 Staff in the museum were very helpful. Small gift shop with souvenirs and restrooms downstairs
William W — Google review
Extremely interesting war museum that focuses on Mons, but gives a lot of more general insights generally on the two world wars. When we visited they had a very nice temporary exhibition on rumours and war propaganda (the famous story of St George the angels at the battle of Mons).
Alessandro H — Google review
I went to the museum with a work group and we were taken on a guided tour, the exhibits were good and the tour guide was very knowledgeable. I would recommend the museum to anyone who is interested in finding out about the military history of the area.

Lots of collections but really poor presentations...dark with small font... Is it a good idea to place the display boards in these ways?! It's not a art museum.

The Van Gogh House, located in the village of Cuesmes near Mons, Belgium, is a preserved dwelling where Vincent Van Gogh lived and worked for a period of time. Although visitors were unable to enter the house due to COVID-19 restrictions or ongoing work during some visits, there are informative signs and stone steps outside that provide insight into his life there. The adjacent museum offers a deeper understanding of Van Gogh's time in Belgium through a lengthy but helpful film.
There's no work of art there but there's an atmosphere for sure. You can easily imagine Vincent emerging from this house. It's Belgian black country, it's dark, industrial and ugly but the light around this place is enigmatic and it seems to have inspired anyway the future painter.
Laurent C — Google review
It’s very small but I think if you like Van Gogh and if you’re near to the city, you should go. There’s some books that he read and some drawings that he did.
Luciana C — Google review
If you are a Van Gogh fan like me, then you will be interested in visiting this museum. There are only two exhibition halls and a few graphic arts by Van Gogh. There is also a hall where they show a thematic film. Souvenir shop with not much choice. The area around is well maintained and it's a pleasure to spend time here. There is a bus stop not far away.
YEVHENIIA R — Google review
A small museum of the house where the famous painter spent a few years of his life. If you find yourself in the city of Mons, it's worth it to pay a visit to this museum.
Marios T — Google review
It's a simple house but they made it a nice experience. The movie is a bit long but it helps so much to understand how his life in Belgium was and to understand him better and hour his life in Belgium really affected the outcome of his work. People were very friendly and I was lucky to go on a event day so the entrance was free but it's very cheap anyway. If you're around Mons, take a trip to it. Dive in his past and experience an old time Belgium... The VR experience they had for the event was very simple but lovely and fun. Well done Belgium and specially mons that is always creating gets experiences.
Alessandra D — Google review
The home, turned museum, is part of the larger Van Gogh trail, running between Belgium and the Netherlands. They do an excellent job of connecting the house to his story and the impacts the area made on his life.

Cultural landmark
The Belfry of Mons, a Baroque bell tower dating back to 1672, is nestled in a serene garden and designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can explore the Castle Gardens and Saint Calixte chapel before reaching this iconic landmark. Climbing its 87-meter height rewards with breathtaking city views. The belfry stands as an important example of Baroque architecture and offers panoramic vistas of Mons.
Beautiful and pleasant place. But undoubtedly, if you visit the city of Mons...immediately visit the clock tower - Belfry of Mons. Amazing experience, the music from the tower is wonderful. I couldn't believe it was being performed live...at the top of the tower there is a man playing these dozens of bells. Incredible ! I didn't want to go down, I could stay there for hours ...
Stanislav I — Google review
No way to see outside in. Clear way weil the windows are very dirty & 9€ is to much for seeing nothing ! Just seeing the facade is better 👍
Zana S — Google review
Obviously tickets couldn't be bought from the Belfry itself so we had to walk a little way and buy the ticket, written out by hand, from the UNESCO house and then walk up the winding path to the castle park and enter that way. Once inside you take the lift to the fifth floor and then climb a further three floors on a metal staircase to see the clock operating mechanism. And that's it, no balcony to see the views. Climbing down one floor you can look through windows to see a panorama of the city but they were so filthy it spoiled the experience. I walked a circuit of the small castle park and then we walked back through the town.
Marcus H — Google review
A central feature of Mons and well worth a visit. There is an elevator you can get a card for if walking the stairs is too much for you. The bells at the top are visible through a plexiglass screen, with limited space but fit fun to see and hear, each 15 minutes it plays a tune
Graham S — Google review
It's the main landmark in the city of Mons. Towering above everywhere its good to orient yourself to. I didn't go inside but you dont really need to. Its impressive most from the distance or some side streets.
Paul H — Google review
I enjoyed to see the town from the top of this magnificient old tower
Andrew W — Google review
Very nice experience. The elevator takes you to the 5th floor, then 2 more staircases to the carillon. Descending is all by staircase and the last one is the tightest. People with disabilities and take the elevator down again by request. Beautiful views, well restored and maintained bellfroi. The grounds are also nice to stroll.

The Saint Waltrude Collegiate Church, located in Mons, Belgium, is a Catholic church dedicated to Saint Waltrude of Mons. Dating back to 1450, this protected monument houses the car d'Or and features Brabant-Gothic architecture. The church's grandeur is evident from its Gothic design and towering interior with straight lines and solid stone construction.
Oh my word! What an absolutely stunning building both inside and out! We visited in June 2023,while on our first holiday to Belgium, all the way from Scotland. Peaceful, calming, so,so,spiritual, when we entered. Only thing I'd say is,(me being religious)- (other people may not think its a big deal), the toilet signs, could be on a better place, other than right beside the c Cross of Jesus Christ. That's only my opinion, anyway,we loved everything about the Chapel. Thanks, and 🙌 blessings.
Norma M — Google review
A beautiful Gothic interior, with a multitude of stained glass windows, a real feature of Mons. The exterior is impressive too. Inside houses a large carriage used in the pageants like the ducasse of Mons.
Graham S — Google review
It it a very beautiful church. You can feel all the history. Both the joy and the sorrows that have been felt in this place. There’s so much to see and especially enjoyed all the handcarved pieces. You’ll not regret visiting this beautiful church.
Jannick K — Google review
Beautiful gothic church with a lot of art, espescially the marble cursus are beautiful, marvelous Windows with stained glass and a small but interesting treasure room.
Kees W — Google review
Very prominent church in Mons. Ongoing renovations and retrofitting. A lovely church indeed and the paintings inside and some interesting informations could be accessed through their partnered downloadable audio guide via IziTravel.
Vic C — Google review
The Saint Waltrude Collegiate Church is the magnificent building of Mons. Even from the outside, one can see the church is of Gothic design, although the southern section is covered in scaffolding due to restoration work. The Gothic design is much more obvious from the inside with straight lines of incredible height. Part of that is down to the hardness of the stone used and even now looks so solid. As you can guess from the name, the church is named in honour of Saint Waltrude, whose shrine and reliquary can also be found inside. Her head can be found in the chapel dedicated to her and the reliquary containing her body is held above the high altar for all to see. The church also has some chapels with important sculptures and paintings such as those by Jacques du Broeucq and Peter Paul Rubens. The chapel of Saint Peter is unexpected as it has a wooden sculpture of death to symbolically represent the passage of time, as well as an alabaster sculpture of Jesus symbolically handing over the keys of heaven to Peter. There's also a free downloadable audio guide, which is good enough to help you understand the history of the church as well as giving good commenter on all the chapels.
Macedonboy — Google review
Although missing a clock tower, it is worth a visit. It is huge church containing the relequis of St Waltrude. You can download a free tour guide giving you more background info.
Bart E — Google review
One of Belgium's most beautiful churches if you ask me. It's very big and the relics and organ are just amazing. The story behind the beautiful carriage is also very interesting! Don't miss this on your visit to Mons.

The Mundaneum, founded by Belgian humanists Paul Otlet and Nobel Prize winner Henri La Fontaine, is a captivating early 20th-century attempt to capture all human knowledge. Housed in a former Art Deco department store, this exhibition showcases an enormous index card system developed by Otlet to catalog and summarize all of human knowledge before the internet existed. The system utilized cards and cabinets to store information, with each piece of knowledge summarized on an index card and stored in various pigeonholes.
The museum itself was very interesting, it's one of those niche things you cannot find anywhere else. I went with a blind friend and the staff was extremely nice and went out of their way so that my friend could enjoy the visit more and "see" better where he was walking and what was in front of him.
雷聲 — Google review
Fun to visit. A lot of reading, but interesting building and interesting concept. But if you are in Mons, would be a shame to skip it. It's a remnant of a few people with big ideas that wanted to index almost all the literature that existed at that time.
Tom V — Google review
Great museum. Well mantained and well manged. I learned a lot. It brought me to the past through the collection.
Labibah Z — Google review
The Mundaneum is an enormous index card system created by Paul Otlet in the early 20th century. He tried to catalogue and summarize all the human knowledge. And the only tools available to him were cards and cabinets. Each piece of information, eg a journal article or a book, is summarized on one index card. And three copies of this same card are stored in three pigeonholes — variously sorted according to names and theme, for example. The public could write a letter to “search for” a topic by a certain author. And the information on the “retrieved” cards are sent back to them in a letter. This small museum now houses three floors of cabinets containing his cards. At the entrance, an interactive device shows how his system worked.

Bart B — Google review
You immediately understand why this is part of UNESCO heritage. It's simply beautiful and impressive. Don't forget to use the screen on your left-hand side as you've entered. It gives you a clear explanation of the classification system they use on all of the information cards.
Juljan D — Google review
Fascinating early 20th century attempt to capture all human knowledge by two humanists (Henri de la Fontaine - Nobel Peace prize winner & co-founder of the League of Nations - and Paul Otlet, an imaginative visual thinker who foresaw the internet & Zoom and developed a universal classification system. Like an early search engine before computrs existed. Exhibition housed in an old Art Deco department store, only a short walk from the Mons Grand Place. Go!
Cheryl C — Google review
Just down the street from the Grand-Place is the Mundaneum museum. It documents how a group of researchers wanted to keep a record of all written knowledge... by writing out library card catalog entries for each book! A reminder of times before Google was available!

Cemeteries
St Symphorien military cemetery, established by the Germans in 1916, is a poignant site where German and British soldiers rest together. It holds the graves of soldiers who perished during the liberation of Mons in 1918. Notably, it is the final resting place of Private John Parr, the first British soldier killed in WWI, and George Ellison, believed to be the last combat fatality.
We arrived here by bike to visit this unesco site. Established by the Germans in 1914, it uniquely honors both Allied and German soldiers, including the first and last British soldiers killed in the war. The peaceful setting, surrounded by trees and thoughtfully arranged graves, adds to its poignant atmosphere.
Anthony C — Google review
A truly beautiful cemetery. It was quiet and peaceful during our visit. We were able to find the two graves we were looking for. A very moving cemetery as well as it had German graves as well.
Seb O — Google review
This is quite a small military cemetery in an area that has many cemeteries for the fallen of the Great War. This one is slightly different. The land was originally farm land and was given over on the understanding that soldiers from both the German and Commonwealth forces are buried there. Graves are arranged in small groups with soldiers mixed in both. In its own way this emphasizes the whole futility of war. Another feature here is the grave of the first Commonwealth soldiers to die in the conflict and, right opposite, the grave of the last Commonwealth soldiers to die. Owing to the close proximity of the SHAPE NATO base in Mons there is a joint forces service held here on Armistice Day. The overwhelming atmosphere here is different to the likes of Tyne Cot, more an air of peace and solitude. Not the easiest place to find but worth the effort.
Ian S — Google review
As usual, very well kept by CWGC and I presume German organizations. Roadworks still a minor problem as of 18/09/25 so approach from the West on Av de la Shangri for access to parking. As well as the first and last Commonwealth casualties, Maurice Dease is also buried here, technically the first VC recipient of the Great War.
Safetyhat — Google review
One of the nicest military cemetery I have ever seen (and there is lot of them in Belgium, believe me). It is interesting fact that here lay both Commonwealth and German soldiers from the Battle of Mons. Such a peaceful and dignify place for final rest.
Krunoslava G — Google review
Very moving cemetery, would advise that as of 16/09/2025 there are road works outside entrance. Cemetery is still accessible, unsure about how easy wheelchair access is.
That G — Google review
I have been to this cemetary numerous times in my role as a battlefield guide. It never fails to impress visitors, particularly because the grave of Private John Parr, Mddx Regt, the first British soldier killed in the war on 21st Aug 1914 lies a yard or two, across the path, from the grave of George Ellison of the Royal Irish Lancers, believed to be the last British combat fatality, killed on 11 November 1918. The cemetary was in German hands throughout the war. They buried men of The Cheshire Regiment here who were killed in the defence of Mons. The Cheshires had so impressed the Germans with their bravery that the memorial stone they erected acknowledges 'The Royal Cheshire Regiment'. In fact the Cheshire were not a 'Royal' regiment and maintained proudly that they 'didn't have to be Royal to be loyal'. I attach a photo of a Gunner of 'E' Battery, Royal Horse Artillery, laying a wreath at the grave of Private Parr on the day after the battery had commemorated the centenary of having fired the first artillery rounds by the British Army. This action took place on Aug 22nd 1914 on N27, Avenue Leopold III some 300m from the junction with N90.

Musée du Doudou is a local history museum in Mons, dedicated to the Ducasse celebration. The museum features interactive exhibitions for both children and adults, telling the tale of local saints such as Saint Waudru and the combat of Saint George with the dragon. It celebrates the history of an annual event where people gather to watch St-Georges fight a dragon in Grand-place.
Very nice staff, the museum was nice and it wasn't expensive, especially with our student card.
Zaina A — Google review
Quite small, but ok, it is impressive for one short visit, wc, lockers available, parking at nearby streets, first month's Sunday is for free! There are some information about Christianity and the fight between good (citizens) and evil (dragon) supplemented by several interactive stops, so kids had fun, but overally you can do it for less than 1 hour, for short Sunday walk it is good enought and you can admire the very nice surroundings
Marek S — Google review
A very specific museum all about the dragon Doudou that seems it has a huge following and has an enactment once a year and from the movies playing in the museum, it looks akin to a soccer match with crowds of rowdy men charging around town.
Graham S — Google review
Museum dedicated to the spectacle in Mons that is the Doudou. A huge festival of St George & Dragon and St Waudru. The museum does a fantastic job of describing a truly bonkers local festival and really makes me want to see the event in person one day.
Nicholas S — Google review
The museum celebrates the history of an event held once a year where it seems everyone in the city of Mons gathers in the Grand-place to watch St-Georges on his horse fight a dragon. It is said to be good luck to obtain a piece of the dragon's tail which teams of mostly well-behaved patrons try to get close enough to grab. From these photos, you can see it is nearly impossible to get around during the event, so if possible, try to book a table at one of the restaurants which overlook the area.
Lise G — Google review
A bit small, hopefully they manage to expand it in the future. Staff was very good though. It's inexpensive so I would still recommend it if you're in the area.

So beautiful!! Absolutely worth seeing. My favorite thing we've done in Mons easily. Thank you to the staff for being so welcoming and helpful as well. I was blown away by some of the pieces- pictures can't do it justice, you've gotta go see it for yourself.

Perfect! Family friendly and kind welcoming! Little price (3€/person) and an amazing service. We came with a toddler and a 3 weeks old baby: the staff was so nice all along, we had a staff showing us the way and showing us the way for our stroller, they gave us access to a private room for breastfeeding ( that was also convenient for my toddler to play while waiting), the lockers are huge and free and the museum had interactive activities such as a game on the phone with QR codes that kept our toddler busy and a little escape game at the end of the exhibition. Thank you, BAM, for letting families have access to museums, to introduce art to kids and to allow parents to not have to give up on museums for a decade.

The Neolithic Flint Mines of Spiennes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest concentration of ancient flint mines in Europe. Visits are limited to 5,500 people annually and must be arranged in advance. The site offers informative panels but is best experienced with a guide for a deeper understanding. It's also an ideal starting point for scenic walks and provides a tranquil and relaxing atmosphere.
Visit to the mine should be booked in advanced, then 14 EUR. Only the exhibition 6 EUR. Exhibition was fine for me. As with all UNESCO sights it is interesting. Didn't know, flintstones could be so big, were so rare AND widely traded 6000. years ago.
Marcel M — Google review
Dating back to around 4000 BC, these flint mines are among the oldest in Europe and showcase the advanced techniques used by Neolithic people to extract stone for tools. The underground galleries and open pits reveal the scale and complexity of their work Learned a lot about the mines. We didn’t go down because u need to book but it is a very small area to go anyways.
Anthony C — Google review
6000 years ago Neolithic age humans mined Flintstones at this site during the Stone Age . Probably the first thing mined by human beings. An important part of human history. Very few such sites exist in the world so definitely worth a visit. Booking needs to be done beforehand if you want to go down the cave. It seems a bit deep but the crew ensures full safety. The whole tour takes more than an hour with around 20 min in the cave.
Divya P — Google review
Amazing site, one of only 4 publicly open flint mines in the world. To buy tickets in advance you have to call them directly, since there is no option on their website. I would highly recommend this visit, for adults and children alike!

Few indications to find the place, we find ourselves in the middle of nowhere, only a few km from Mons. The place is superb and green. Without a guide, few things to see, a few explanatory panels outside and inside, and that's about it. On the other hand, the place is a starting point for magnificent walks, including a Ravel. It's calm, flowery and relaxing. (Original) Passés à 2 un peu par hasard un dimanche milieu d'après midi, sans réservation de guide. The tunnels are only a few meters long, but here you can see where the flints were mined in the Neolithic period and where the archaeologists made the discoveries upstairs in the museum. During the tour, you can also learn much more about the excavations than what's on display in the museum. The Grand Hornu is a UNESCO heritage site located in the town of Hornu, near Mons, Belgium. It features an impressive neoclassical building complex dating back to the 19th century, built atop an old coal mine by industrialist Henri De Gorge. The site now houses the Museum of Contemporary Arts of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (MACS), which opened in 2002 and offers multidisciplinary arts exhibitions with a rich collection of over 450 works.
A journey out of town but well worth it. The site of the mine and the collective of workers housing. A very interesting history lesson about the man and his vision. The interior is used as a design museum in one section and some fine art in other. The structure of the building itself is fascinating and the oval shape of the building.
Graham S — Google review
Fantastic place. Disappointing that they didn't keep a "permanent exhibition" or something like that. The complete museum was dismantled. The temporary exhibition was very nice though...
Juan G — Google review
We were impressed by the combination of various attractions on same site (exhibition in MAC's museum, supernatural design exhibition, world heritage building/site and Rizom restaurant). Fascinating site, do make sure to explore it entirely (without any rush) and do wander around (especially on a sunny day). Story of the site itself is unique (factory owner offered school education to kids below 12 years around 1820) almost 100years before Belgian government introduced this principle. Informative 10' movie on site neatly tells the whole story.
Kestens T — Google review
The building of coal mine is quite interesting. There are also some picturesque ruins and some staff from the former mine on the territory around. The art they exhibit there is far from my understanding, but may be some people like such kind of art. The one thing which I didn't like was that one of the museum exhibition hall supervisor was behaving strange and was completely impolite. That was really not pleasant. And on the contrary the girl at the entrance desk was very polite and understanding.
Dasha P — Google review
What an amazing space, so tastefully restored! The contemporary art exhibition wasn't great, the curators need to rethink it and show the work of Bernd and Hilla Becher, for example, instead of chasing the poorly made contemporary stuff. We did enjoy the live Sunday concert though, the bookshop was great, the live goats, the wild meadow field and the lunch at Rezom, it was simply superb.

Maison Losseau, located in rue de Nimy, is a splendid example of Art Nouveau architecture. This ambitious project by former owner Leon Losseau celebrates sensual ornamentation and curves typical of the Jugendstil style. The well-preserved building can be visited for a nominal fee and offers a glimpse into the original equipment and beautiful rooms of the house. Its neoclassical facade hides lush ornamental metal doors that hint at the exquisite taste in architecture and decoration.
One of the most interesting places I've seen recently, you have to park somewhere within the center streets, the entrance fee is only symbolic, very kind English-speaking guide explained all things to us and introduced the house to us, the first part is only a small museum, but then there is a authentic house with original equipment, beautiful rooms and household, even the children were interested, the house has a very beautiful garden right in the center of the city! short but impressive visit, I recommend! Of course, wc and small souvenirs shop is available

Hôtel de Ville, situated in the heart of the city on the main square, is a historic town hall that serves as the focal point of the old town's architectural charm. This iconic building is located at Grand Place 22 and adds to the cultural significance of Mons, Belgium.
The Hotel de ville is the Town Hall of Mons, and the most important building of the Grand Place. Built in the 15th century, the town hall it dominates the Grand Place public square. The building itself looks like it could do with a clean, but otherwise it’s a nice example of Late and Northern European Gothic architecture. Especially noteworthy are the foliage decorations and highly regular and symmetric mullions on the windows of the front facade. The keystones of the ribbed vaults of the interiors are unusual, ending in scenes from everyday life. Definitely worth visiting this building when in Mons.

(Translated by Google) The town hall of Mons was built between 1458 and 1477 in Gothic style. It has only one floor and is striking for its - in 1717 / 1718 - added bell tower. On the front is ''the monkey of Mons'' which, according to legend, brings good luck. The town hall has various rooms; The wedding hall (Salle des Mariages) with its Italian-style ceiling (1682); The committee room (Salle des Commissions) with its chimney made of Rance marble; The bag room (Salle des Sacquiaux) with its impressive fireplace from the 16th century; The portrait room (Salle des Portraits) and the large rooms (Les Grands Salons). The mayor's state office (Cabinet d' Apparat) is one of the oldest parts of the building and dates from the 15th century. The Salle des Sacquiaux comes from the local dialect in which ''sacquiaux'' is a word for ''little pouches''. Originally this was the hall for the guards, where the city keys were kept in leather pouches. The town hall can only be visited after a prior reservation and only accompanied by an official guide. Inquire at the tourism office.

The Grand-Place de Mons is a historical center with narrow cobbled streets and well-preserved old buildings that showcase the city's rich history. The square also boasts an engraved circle displaying the names of the 19 townships comprising Greater Mons. Additionally, temporary art installations like the statues of Plensa add to the square's allure.
Visiting Grand-Place in Mons was one of the highlights of my trip. The square is full of charm, surrounded by beautiful historic buildings, and has such a warm, local vibe. I spent a few hours here just soaking in the atmosphere — it’s lively but not overwhelming, and the pedestrian-only layout makes it feel really relaxed and welcoming. What really stood out to me were the cafés and restaurants around the square. I enjoyed a delicious lunch at one of the terrace spots with a perfect view of the Town Hall — the food was great, and the service was friendly. Whether you’re in the mood for Belgian classics or something more modern, there’s something for everyone. Don’t forget to rub the little brass monkey on the Town Hall for good luck! The Strépy-Thieu Boat Lift is a remarkable feat of human engineering, towering at 102 meters high and dominating the valley between Strepy-Bracquegnies and Thieu. Completed in 2002, it is the world's tallest ship lift, capable of raising or lowering massive boats by 73 vertical meters. Visitors can explore the lift's efficient engine room and appreciate its construction through a multilingual video.
This boat lift is an example of magnificent engineering. It overcomes a height difference of 73m and until 2016, when the boat lift in the three georges dam in China took over, the tallest boat lift in the world. It was completed in 2002 together with the canal and aquaduct nearby. The lift has two counterweighted caissons (tanks) of 118m long, 16,5m wide, and 8 meter high. There are eight large counterweights connected via 144 steel cables to each tank. Four huge electric motors drive the vertical movement of each tank. You can visit the eight floor where you have a museum, a video presentation and where you can see the big machinery hall. On that level is also a cafetaria. On your way out, you can stop on level five for a panoramic look outside. When I was there (May 2025) there were no large ships lifted or lowered due to a collapsed bridge which blocked the canal north of the lift. Only small pleasure boats used the lift.
Seimen B — Google review
Impressive piece of civil engineering with views over the canal below. Viewing platform and tour available. I think you may need to be lucky to see the lift in action as it depends on canal boats turning up. Nonetheless, the boat lift dominates its surroundings.
Martin B — Google review
The lift is a beautiful site with its majestic piece of engineering and its beautiful landscaped surroundings. The issue is that the road going around the lift is used by racing motorbikes and cars making horrible reving noises throughout the day. How can this be allowed?
B J — Google review
What an amazing show of engineering! The museum inside was suprisingly well thought out and very up to date. Even including how covid influenced the shipping industry & the accident in the Seuz canal. Staff was friendly & welcoming. We even got to see the structure in motion when a boat arrived during our visit. Definitely learned a lot here. There’s ramps up to the windows, large and lowered elevator buttons for easy accessibility.
Ravennest 1 — Google review
The place was closed while we were there, but we were just passing by. Will have to come back when it's open as it's an impressive structure and appears to have a lot more inside.

Very impressive, lovely area. Didn't do the boat trip but looked interesting.
Richard H — Google review
A gigantic elevator for boats? Amazing and curious place to visit if you like to go off the beaten track. There is a visitor centre that offers information and an interactive and child friendly expo. If you plan ahead you can also arrange a boat trip that takes you in the elevator.
Kbkat B — Google review
Came by back. Exhibits were so so but the live boat lift was good experience. The Strépy-Thieu Boat Lift is a modern engineering marvel and a fascinating site to explore. Completed in 2002, it is one of the tallest boat lifts in the world, with a vertical rise of 73 meters. It was built to replace the historic canal lifts and improve navigation along the Canal du Centre. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views from the observation deck and learn about the area's rich industrial heritage in the exhibition space.

The MAC's museum in Belgium is considered one of the most stunning destinations in the country. Although getting there without a car may pose some challenges, the site itself and the exhibitions showcased at MAC's are definitely worth a visit. The museum features an impressive display of ceramic, glass, jewelry, and lamp creations by 18 skilled craftsmen. The staff members are exceptionally friendly and helpful.

(Translated by Google) The place is worth the trip but on the other hand the exhibitions really leave something to be desired, especially the latest one by Daniel'Turner, it's a disaster, a large room with 2 beams on the floor, another room with door handles and 2 squeegees for the floor and a 3rd room with old mattresses and a bunch of pipes etc… where is the art? It's rubbish, I think it would be urgent to select better because the last 3 times, zero, zero. And pay to see that???

A very pleasant park for walking and relaxing! Cozy paths, well-maintained green areas, plenty of benches, and quiet corners. It’s a great place to escape the city’s hustle and bustle. Especially beautiful in spring and summer when everything is in bloom. There’s a playground for kids and a pond where you can sit and enjoy the view. Perfect for solo walks or family outings. Perfect place to unwind. A bit crowded over the weekends, but never the less, still tranquil and relaxing. Great for an hour with the family, whether picknic or just plain old "walk in the park". Couple of more benches would be welcomed, though. It has a small football pitch to shoot some footballs around. Free of charge parking and and a very nice pond with ducks and geese. Have fun, we sure did and will...Thank you

Nestled in the heart of a former coal mine, SPARKOH! is an extraordinary science adventure park that invites families to explore the wonders of science through engaging and interactive exhibits. This unique attraction offers a playful twist on learning, making it an ideal destination for curious minds of all ages. Located in Jemappes communal park in Hainaut, visitors can immerse themselves in hands-on experiences that spark creativity and curiosity while enjoying the beautiful surroundings.
SPARKOH! Specifically, the science and discovery activities were engaging and interactive, with both a huge indoor play area and a fun outdoor playground for kids to enjoy. We loved exploring the exhibits and easily spent almost three hours there without noticing the time. One area for improvement is the café, which could offer a wider range of options, especially vegan food, to cater to different dietary needs. Overall, I recommend SPARKOH! because it’s an inspiring, educational, and entertaining place that makes science come alive for visitors of all ages.
Thebintaryam T — Google review
It’s a nice museum about science, chemistry, history about the place where it is built and about the future jobs. There are almost only games to make the learning fun with a big place outside for kids, to play and a restaurant/cafeteria.
Checker A — Google review
A museum that combines cultural relics, history and scientific experience. The museum provides experiences in Dutch, French and English, which is eye-catching. The staff are friendly and welcoming. You can also climb the hill next to it to have a panoramic view of the rich local scenery. A full day activity suitable for the whole family and very meaningful.
Tomi W — Google review
We visited on a Tuesday and it was a fantastic experience. We purchased tickets online and were greeted by a kind young lady who offered a map. We spent a little over 3 hours at the museum and the kids wanted to keep going. Most things were labeled in three languages, so as primarily English speakers it was pleasant to be able to read the science behind the displays. I do think we missed an entire section somehow since some of the things we were looking forward to we didn’t encounter. The cafe food was delicious, but we did have a bit of trouble communicating our order- a small menu we could point to might be helpful for future guests (not expected in another country, but might be helpful!). None of the workshops were open, but I can understand why with how quiet it was. Overall it was a wonderful experience.
Angelica S — Google review
absolutely amazing place for a family with children, free parking in front of the entrance, great admission fee is definitely worthwhile, a realy huge complex full of amazing scientific experiments, certainly the most scientific attractions in one place I've ever seen, we were there for 4 hours but that's not enough to see everything, there is even the 4d cinema inside, large restaurant with English speaking personnel, they have very big outdoor playground for kids and a cute small garden, this is just a great and lovely place for whole family, we will definitely come back, cons: no English translations on some attractions...

SILEX'S is a unique site located about 6 kilometers from Bergen/Mons, featuring one of the oldest flint mines from the Neolithic era. Visitors can only access the flint mine with a guide by reservation and descend about 12 meters along a vertical ladder with 50 rungs to explore the chilly underground space. The small museum above ground provides historical context through information boards, photos, and videos, complemented by insights from knowledgeable guides.
Really amazing place. All in all some stones in the middle of large meadow, BUT being to enter mine which was used 4000-6000years ago, to touch the same stones and see the same as people thousands years ago is really great. Mandatory place for every pupil, every school to visit. And really open, knowlagable and friendly archeolog as the guide.
Bartek B — Google review
An interesting site. We visited with our two children and they learned quite a bit about flint mining in the Neolithic era. The wall display showing different events through the ages was well done. We did the "underground" tour. It seemed promising when they gave us helmets and clipped us into some gear, but all we did was climb down a ladder and stand in a 10ft by 10ft area. Not allowed to touch, can't explore... Just stand and listen to the guide recite the same info that was on the panel above ground. Don't waste your money on the "underground" tour. Very expensive for nothing...

Twenty Buns is a popular restaurant in Mons known for its wonderful Sunday morning hangover brunch. The 100% USA formula includes a choice of pastries, freshly squeezed juice, hot drinks, scrambled or Benedict eggs, famous mac and cheese, marinated pork ribs, and chicken wings. It's the perfect place to indulge and leave with a full belly ready for an afternoon nap.
I'd spent about an hour walking around the freezing cold streets of Mons until Twenty Buns opened, and it was worth the wait! Quite possibly the best cooked burger I've ever had, delicious, moist, tender, just superb. Every member of staff in the place was super helpful and made me feel at home even though I only speak a tiny amount of French. I had a fried cheese starter, then the Harlem burger with chips (fries), which were also perfectly cooked. If you're in Mons you have to go here. Absolutely delivers!

Twenty Buns is the perfect spot in Mons if you’re looking for delicious burgers and fried snacks. I would definitely recommend reserving in advance, as it gets quite busy especially on the weekends and can also be a bit loud given the smaller space. The staff were very kind and helped explain different dishes to us, which was very appreciated. I especially loved the Manhattan burger, the sweet potato fries, and the cheesecake with red berries. Will definitely come back!

The food is amazing. The starters are a great mix of ribs / wings and onion rings. The burger "Bronx" is packed with flavor, between the fried egg, bacon and tender meat. They also have homemade sauces that contribute to the overall dining experience. The staff is pleasant and the atmosphere is filled with an American vibe. I definitely recommend this restaurant and would come back for sure.

Perfect! Besides the amazing hamburgers accompanied by tasteful fries, you will be very well attended by the staff. People are very kind and proactive. Enjoy!
Josué C — Google review
Food quality acceptable considering the price. Weird policy of “no more than 5 choice of burger for a table of 8”, and the kitchen closes at 2PM, understandable but worth knowing. All of this is fine as the main problem is that the owner is grumpy and pushy, we felt him breathing in ournecks the whole time, it left a very bad taste. I Won’t come back.

old-fashioned payment method... Good burger considering there aren't many options in Mons. The only negative point is the payment method. If you're an expat or tourist who doesn't use Belgian bank cards, bring cash. In 2025, this is unacceptable! Please improve.

Absolutely fabulous restaurant. Incredible service with meticulous attention paid to dietary restrictions. Terrific wine pairings and the best desserts imaginable. The amuses were...amusing and both meat and fish entrees superlative. The staff was extremely considerate and patient with our attempts at communicating in French! Looking forward to return soon.

If you're on the lookout for a culinary gem, look no further than Osmose 🇫🇷. This charming restaurant is celebrated for its innovative approach to classic French cuisine, showcasing an array of dishes crafted from fresh and seasonal ingredients. Diners rave about the delightful flavors and expert preparation that make each meal a feast for both the eyes and palate. The lunch menu offers exceptional value, featuring a starter, main course, and dessert at an affordable price point.
We discovered this wonderful restaurant by chance while visiting Mons. The quality of food and its presentation was well above average. Service was very good too. The menu changes so check first. Should I return to Mons I will definitely be going back to this restaurant.

This was one of the best dining experiences my partner and I have ever had. We had a truly exceptional evening. We managed to get a table without a reservation at 8pm on a Thursday. The waiter, despite the language barrier, was so lovely and attentive - it was such brilliant service. We went for the 4 course menu for around €65 with paired wines for an additional €32 and it was simply outstanding. The food was some of the most beautifully plated I have ever had and tasted incredible. The menu is fish focussed and each piece was cooked to perfection. The chef came out to serve desert - he deserves huge recognition. And then the wine! The pairing choices were incredible, we took photos of each bottle, and our glass was never left empty - the '4' glasses was really 8/9 and after paying the bill we told the waiter how much we loved the desert wine and he poured us another! Overall, it is hard to write this review without using extensive superlatives - just go for yourself and have a wonderful evening!

(Translated by Google) We were pleasantly surprised by our experience at Osmose last night. A wonderful discovery! A special mention for the octopus: melting from the first bite, perfectly cooked. The crème brûlée rounded off the meal beautifully. A true delight from start to finish. The waitress was friendly and very pleasant, which made the experience even more memorable. My partner and I had a great time. Bravo to the chef and the entire team!

(Translated by Google) Very good restaurant! Delicious, original and beautifully prepared dishes. You can tell that the chef has a lot of love for his profession. The host did not speak English or Dutch and we did not speak French, which only made the experience more enjoyable. He paid a lot of attention to us and tried to explain as best as possible what we had on our plate. We had a lot of laughs about the communication back and forth. Highly recommended! Nestled in the charming town of Ghlin, just north of Mons, Belgium, Port de Plaisance de Mons—also known as Port de Plaisance du Grand-Large—is a delightful marina that offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. This picturesque spot is situated on the expansive Grand Large artificial lake, seamlessly integrated into the local canal system. With 157 berths available, it caters to both seasoned sailors and newcomers alike.
(Translated by Google) Beautiful harbour. Electricity, water and sanitary facilities available. Great harbor master, super friendly and helpful man. You can cycle to Mons, which is a wonderful and pleasant town. There is a go-kart track opposite the harbour. And there is a swimming pool with slides nearby. Restaurant and terrace in the harbour. (Was a downside, I'll write why at the bottom) It is a large lake where the youth sail with their motor boats, but that doesn't bother us much. What I found strange was the fact that the owner and/or managers of the restaurant and terrace turned on the music very loudly after closing time (around 11 p.m.). You hardly hear any music all day long and then (at night) all that "banging" music was turned on. If you don't like this, you better not moor your boat in front of the restaurant. I thought this was a downside.!!! (Original) Mooie haven. Elektriciteit, water en sanitaire voorzieningen aanwezig. Geweldige havenmeester, super vriendelijke en behulpzame man.

Eglise Sainte-Elisabeth de Mons is a stunning church located near the Grand Place of Mons. It is a blend of Gothic, Romanesque, and Baroque architecture, having stood since the early 16th century and undergone restoration after a fire in 1715. The interior showcases original Gothic structures that withstood the fire alongside rebuilt sections. The adjoining cemetery is the final resting place for several notable individuals.
Small yet beautiful old church just outside of the town plaza.

The Eglise Sainte-Elisabeth de Mons is a church not far from the Grand Place of Mons. The church is a mixture of Gothic, Romanesque and Baroque as you’d expect from a church that’s been standing since the early 16th century and no doubt undergone restoration. Especially as the church was gutted by a fire in the 1715 and inside, you can see where the original Gothic structures withstood the fire and what had to be rebuilt, which is the majority. Not much of the original building has been restored and there’s only a few stained glass windows, the rest are plain glass. The church reputedly has a reliquary holding the relics of Saint George, which is housed in one of the chapels. Unless you’re extremely pious with a need to see relics and reliquaries of saints, I’d only visit the church if you have time to spare. There’s also a statue of Leopold II outside the south west corner of the church.

If you're on the hunt for a culinary adventure, Gurkha Cuisine is a must-visit destination that beautifully marries Indian and Nepalese flavors. This charming restaurant offers an array of dishes bursting with spices that will tantalize your taste buds. From the flavorful Chicken Tikka Tandoori to the aromatic seafood biryani, each dish promises a delightful experience. Don't forget to order rice separately as it doesn't accompany all meat dishes!
The food was very good. The tandoori roti served here is the best I have had so far in Belgium. The owners were very friendly and caring. The tea served at the end was OUT OF THIS WORLD! I will visit it again and again!

A nice atmosphere, friendly people. Since we love Indian/Nepalese food in general, I can say this wasn't really my cup of tea, a little bit bland in my opinion. But my wife loved it, so even though we're a bit divided here, it's all a matter of taste.

The service and food were fabulous and it was a bargain price for a venue a few minutes from the Grand Place. The meal was very good value too.

Good menu and nice restaurant for Indian. Ordered the Chicken Tikka Tandoori which was very flavorful and the seafood biryani that was good as well. The rice doesn't come with some of the meat dishes so remember to order as well. Naan was good although they mixed paneer and cheddar inside the paneer naan which was a little bit like a grilled cheese. The appetizers were very good, love the pickled mango sauce. Will definitely return to try more of the menu!

Ordered the chicken sekuwa and regular naan bread (garlic is an option). It all came out relatively fast, nice presentation, and served sizzling like we were receiving the Indian equivalent to US fajitas. The chicken was mixed with green and red peppers, onions, and lemon. The portion size was about right. You'll be satisfied but not full. Overall good experience.

LAGO Mons Piscine du Grand Large offers a rewarding experience with its scenic surroundings and water sports activities. The facility has undergone improvements, including the addition of slides for both adults and older children, as well as a new kids' pool with water toys. The place is popular during school breaks due to these enhancements. It boasts clean facilities, warm water, and friendly lifeguards. While it may be a bit far from the city center, it is accessible by bus.
My daughter (2years old) always has fun there. And since they made new improvements and added 2 slides for grownups (or children 8 year and up i believe) and an extra kids/baby pool with water toys, the place is fully packed during school brake. It is fairly clean since they made all of the above improvements, they actually cleaned the place up. The only downside is that the changing booths are extremely small and people are "fighting" over the "family designated booths" (because there are only 2 or 3) due to the fact that they are a bit larger and you have 2 benches inside instead of one. Thank God for the Pull-up Diapers, because i got to one of the larger booths only once in 2 years i've been going there. LOL All in all, it is a fun place for kids when there is a typical rainy Belgian weather outside! I recommend it.
Anele E — Google review
They do not allow people with trunks, invoking there are hygiene concerns(lol). But there are a lot of people with shirts(who wears a shirt in the inside pool?!?). It's all a scheme to force you to buy "the right swimwear". Otherwise the place has decent clean pools, but the toboggans end with concrete walls, something I haven't seen anywhere else. The food court is very dirty as well as are the changing rooms and showers. Overall, I would avoid this place.

Lotto Mons Expo is part of the "golden triangle" complex in Mons, Belgium, which also includes the Congres Hotel Van der Valk de Mons and a Conference Centre. The 8,000m2 exhibition center hosts various events and is located near the city center. Visitors have found it suitable for large events but noted challenges with parking. It has been used as a COVID-19 vaccination center, praised for its organization and helpful staff.
I had to go there to be vaccinated. While there, people around me were extremely helpful to me, since I do not speak a single word in French.

Been here a few months ago at the Legendz indoor event where David Guetta was playing. Small location so people were kinda crammed up but really well organized, parking was awful though.
Gregory S — Google review
We were here for the beatledays 2018. It is reachable from the center of Mons (although the road is a bit sketchy and hard to find with all the works at the station of Mons). It is really big inside and I can imagine for certain events a good fit. For beatledays I preferred the location of last year (theater on the main square of Mons).
Michael F — Google review
Very well organised as a vaccination centre. Quick service and very helpful and polite staff!
Pavlos M — Google review
Huge area for displaying and presenting. Well equipped with toilets and facilities. Lots of free parking.
Graham L — Google review
Small venue for trade shows an hour outside of brussels. Located next to train station so don't get fooled by taxi drivers.

Exebition hall, parking not that easy, very hot in Sommer no Air-conditioned
Christian F — Google review
Waiting to visit inside of it. Apparently, it's the covid vaccination center for the moment..

Domaine du Chant d'Eole is a surprising find in Hainaut, known for its exceptional sparkling wine production. Despite Belgium's reputation for beer, this vineyard has been crafting sparkling wines since 2010. With carefully chosen grape varieties and an experienced Champagne winemaker, the estate has quickly gained recognition for its high-quality products. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing and picturesque experience by sitting outside amidst the vineyards.
Attended summer ball. Staff lovely and really helpful. Beautiful food and wine. Wine tour was interesting and staff knew their subject well!
Hannah G — Google review
Wonderful bubbly wines. A great story. Take the tour and stay for a tasting and a meal.
John R — Google review
A great champagne place with horrible road stop type of food served by untrained staff that tell you that anchovies are fish and don’t know what grape cépage is in the champagne of namesake. It’s in the countryside it would not be so difficult to find a real baker and serve proper bread with farm butter instead of supermarket bread with cheap motel plastic individual serving butter. The setting of the bistro is nice but go there for drinks outside on the terrace and eat the nibbles and tartes de Françoise. For food and service imagine it like at Ibis breakfast area.
Cindy Z — Google review
Super cosy place. Food is fine but a little pricy for what you get. Overall super. Wine in top end with a lot of Belgian top end wines. Staff are super.
Soren R — Google review
Someone recommended visiting to sit outside and have a drink in the surroundings of the vineyard. It is Very relaxing and picturesque. To do the tour - at least 10 people are needed. Was very popular place and all staff very welcoming and informative.
David M — Google review
We enjoyed a tour and tasting here. They were able to provide us with an English speaking guide, Catherine, You could clearly see that she was passionate about this place. The sparkling wine was terrific.
Jodee M — Google review
Highly recommended. A knowledgeable guide will explain you the process of wine making. Of course, the visit will finish with a wine tasting.

A very cool place with nice decorations and gorgeous drinks. Too bad the ice cream did not match the menu description at all and it is quite crowded and expensive. Still had a great time.
