1Waterloo

Mentioned on

Waterloo, located in Belgium, is famous for being the place where Emperor Napoleon I suffered his final defeat in 1815. The town is home to the iconic Lion's Mound, an artificial hill with a cast-iron lion at its peak, offering panoramic views of the battlefield. Visitors can explore the Panorama of the Battle housed in a rotunda at the foot of the mound and delve into the historic significance of the battle at Memorial 1815, an underground center nearby.

Waterloo Battlefield in Belgium is a must-visit for military enthusiasts and tourists alike. The underground museum and visitor center offer immersive multimedia exhibits on the 1815 Battle of Waterloo, one of the bloodiest battles in history. While there are few remains of the battlefield today, it serves as a place for reflection and contemplation. The new museum presents updated historical findings, debunking myths and reevaluating the roles of different parties involved.
Immersive and unforgettable! A fantastic experience from start to finish. The 3D movie was a real highlight—so well done and emotional. The museum is super interactive, with creative displays, sound effects, and hands-on elements that make the history feel alive. The outdoor reenactment camp and Lion’s Mound added to the atmosphere, and everything is really well organized and accessible. Perfect for history lovers and curious visitors alike!
Rania Y — Google review
The museum is interactive and tells a very well thought out story. The details are everywhere from fun little Lego characters to computer screens that either tell cool stories or morph between images from what's on the screen to what's behind it. Very cool displays throughout the museum. I was also loving the presentation of the battlefield by the use of telescopes to find the moving soldiers on the battlefields throughout different dates. Everything was engaging and creative and had multiple languages. Definitely recommend a visit. We took our 12 year old and she was engaged in parts and not so much on others.
Ashlee M — Google review
Visiting the Battle of Waterloo remembrance site is a fascinating journey into one of the most pivotal moments in European history. The museum does an excellent job of bringing the past to life, showcasing the events that marked both the rise and fall of Napoleon Bonaparte. Through immersive exhibits and detailed displays, it offers a deep understanding of how this single battle reshaped the political landscape of Europe for decades to come. A highlight of the visit is climbing the 41-meter-high Lion’s Mound, the impressive monument built by King William I of the Netherlands to commemorate the battle. From the top, you can enjoy a panoramic view over the former battlefields—an awe-inspiring sight that helps you imagine the scale and intensity of the conflict that unfolded there in 1815. Overall, the Waterloo remembrance site and museum provide a meaningful and educational experience for anyone interested in European history, military strategy, or the legacy of Napoleon’s empire. It’s a place where history truly comes alive.
Hans M — Google review
The Waterloo Battlefield experience is truly fantastic and incredibly well-organized. You begin your journey in a superb museum that expertly guides you through the intricate history of the Battle of Waterloo and Napoleon's significant role. The exhibits are exceptionally well-made, enhanced by an engaging audio guide accessible via your phone, providing rich details that truly bring the era to life. I was particularly impressed by the captivating paintings and their accompanying in-depth explanations. From the museum, you can ascend to the iconic Lion's Mound (the "pyramid"). The panoramic view from the top is absolutely breathtaking, offering a clear perspective of the battlefield. There's also a detailed plan indicating the real positions of the warring factions, which is incredibly helpful for visualizing the conflict. A real highlight for me was the immersive acting experience, where you handle a wooden musket and learn to march like the troops before battle. Furthermore, the shooting simulation is beautifully crafted, brilliantly capturing the essence and intensity of what it must have been like to be amidst a real fight. This entire site is stunning and comes highly recommended for a visit with both kids and friends.
Antoine M — Google review
Had a great experience at the Waterloo battlefield, Lion’s Mound and the museum. Surreal to walk around the grounds and learn even more about the place and battle that ultimately ended Napoleon’s reign. The staff are all friendly and welcoming, the experience is value for money and it’s worth a trip!
Mathew L — Google review
Napoleon’s final defeat happened here, and the museum very closely captures what took place. Basic tour was great, with visit to the top. A lot of stairs, so if you are used to less walking those please consider. Additional extra there is also a Lego-exhibition for children or lego-enthusiasts. Reserve around 1,5h to check all.
Eerik H — Google review
If you love history this is a must see. Located a few miles outside the town if Waterloo, the battered is well preserved (except for the fact that they dug up a portion of it to build the Lion Mound). There's a nice modern museum and on-site restaurant (with bathrooms). A huge and detailed 3D model of the battlefield is in the museum and it is worth studying. Also, it's a good idea to read up on the battle and how it progressed before coming because they don't do a very through review of that. The battle was fought over a large area, so climbing the Lion mound is a good idea if you want to see the area in its entirety. The climb, however, is 225 steps at a fairly steep angle so if you're not in good shape or are afraid of heights be sure you're up to it.
Gerald Y — Google review
Very informative. Loved the Lego exhibition of Napoleon's life. The Lions butte is a bit of a climb; 226 steps but the views at the top of the battlefield site are well worth it.

This charming museum is surrounded by lush greenery and vibrant flowers, especially enchanting during summer months. Beautiful museum, in the heart of the city, worth to be visited. Price is 10€/adult but with the extra Playmobil exhibition is 15€/adult.

Interesting small museum showing the history of Wellington and the battle of Waterloo. Great to visit in addition to the battlefield sites a few KMs away

The Musée Wellington in Waterloo served as the Allied command center during the pivotal 1815 battle, where the Duke of Wellington directed strategy and issued the victory dispatch that ended Napoleonic dominance in Europe. Today, it preserves authentic artifacts and documents, providing direct insight into the defeat of Napoleon and the reconfiguration of the European order

Absolutely beautiful and spacious with full of flowers and greenery in the summer. It is a museum dedicated to the Battle of Waterloo around June 18 in 1815. The museum exhibits a collection of documents and artifacts that indicates the historical significance of the battle. This location is also a charming destination for visitors or history enthusiasts in learning about this European history.

Had a brilliant meal with new friends here. Food and beer were excellent. They brew their own beer. Great view over the Waterloo Battlefield

Very good food, good atmosphere and in a unique site. The food was very well presented, tasty and well cooked. Good amount of food. Good cocktails and interesting wine selection. Being a brewery, and Belgian, you can expect excellent beer and even their own whiskeys.
Rodrigo D — Google review
We were there with a group of 10. Even before everyone sat down, they made it very clear we could only take from the pre-arranged menu. A lot of our dishes weren't even warm when they got to the table. The waiters missed several times what we ordered for drinks. So we had to ask again and again to bring our drinks. It also wasn't busy at all. This made us feel like they didn't care at all. I would not come back here .... ever
Joeri I — Google review
We went there as a group, but unfortunately, the service did not meet our expectations. One of the children with us has a food intolerance, and despite mentioning it several times, his dishes still had to be sent back to the kitchen to be remade. We also often had to re-ask for menus, water, etc. Food was okay but nothing out of the ordinary.
Gauthier V — Google review
Really nice spot, hours on google are incorrect, we arrived to have lunch at 13:45 and were told the kitchen closes at 13:30 so we couldn't have food. The food smelt great, nice atmosphere and it was quite busy for term time weekday. Comfy chairs. Disappointed we couldn't taste the food. Nice playground outside for the kids.
Duane B — Google review
It's a perfect place to have a drink in nice weather, it's great for the parent time that we rarely get to find :) We will come with our child, we liked it.

Been there with friends last night for the first time, blown away with the modern touch of the place, specious inside and outside, nice wooden interior details, fast and professional service, and above all the food: ee had vol-au-vent with so tender and tasty chicken, tartar with and without fois gras that's literally melting in the mouth, and some burgers and pasta. Phenomenal experience, looking forward repeating it very soon.

Really easy experience, drove away in a brand new car within 5 mins of arriving and return was really quick and hassle free. Very happy and would definitely use again!

Team in Waterloo is service minded and no blame on them. However had already twice issues with their mother firm, Europcar Belgium, around payments. First time they had noted down my wrong email, so I couldn’t pay and immediately got charged 150 Euros administrative costs. They claim that it is the client duty to make sure that they note down right email. Second time, I got invoice for admin costs related to a fine. Invoice received it at 5.30PM and payable same day. This is not a serious company and I will not use them anymore

The staff are approachable, patient, and offer very good advice, especially Basile, with whom I was lucky enough to close the sale. He also came for the delivery and planting as planned when I bought it. Along with one of his colleagues, who is also very professional, all the steps during planting were respected while protecting the condition of my lawn. The work was impeccable. Lion's Mound, located near Brussels in Belgium, is a man-made mound topped with a lion statue offering panoramic views of the Waterloo battlefield. The site also features a visitor center with extracts from movies and an underground Memorial 1815 showcasing dioramas and a film projection re-enacting the battle. Additionally, visitors can explore smaller monuments and memorials scattered throughout the battlefield, as well as farmhouses famous from the battle that are still in existence.
Nice place to visit. The museum is interesting to visit. 2 to 3 hours will be good. Parking is free. 4d movie showing history of battle was the best part to see. I will suggest going on a sunny day. Little expensive, but in my opinion, must visit place in Belgium.

There was a bit of a wait, but the ticket agent was helpful with the ticket purchase. The exhibition is impressive and monumental. You have to be in shape for the Lion Hill itself, but the panorama from the top is stunning.

The visit to the Waterloo Battle site is a unique experience. The Lion's Mound is impressive and from the top there is a great view of all the battle field. Thinking about the battle from the top of the mound is quite shocking. Very recommended !

You do not need to be a history buff to enjoy this famous landmark. One of the best displays I have seen inside. The panorama is amazing and if you can do the 234 stepps I recommend the splendid view over the battlefield of Waterloo from the top of the mound.
Matthys V — Google review
We visited just the museum. If you go after 17:30 you can get splitted tickets for cheaper prices. The whole tickets are very expensive. The museum was nice, more focused on teaching the history more than showing items from the battle. Worth the visit for the splitted ticket.
Luca R — Google review
The best vantage point to get into the bird eye view to let you imagine what and how this battle had happened! Imagining the hord of cavalry’s horses and the infantry as with cannon on the background trying to fight from both each sodes !
Arnaud V — Google review
Really good explanatory about the battle that took place at Waterloo. It explains the prelude to the battle. Who and what nations were involved. Tactics and troop placement. And aan audio guide on your phone. Is advisable to bring headphones or earbuds. Lots of interactive shows and a Lego exposition .
Rockitttt — Google review
Quite a walk up, however the view is well worth it, especially if you understand how to read ground (given the small size of the battlefield, you can see most of it from here). The museum is fantastic and I love that they've built it underground. There's some truly innovative ways of displaying history in there. Point to note, the soil that was used to make the mound does change the ground on Wellington's position quite significantly, so for the keen historians amongst you, it would be good to take that into consideration when looking over the battlefield.

Hougoumont Farm, also known as Chateau d'Hougoumont, is a classic fortified farm located around 20 minutes southwest of the Butte du Lion. The farm has been recently restored to its original appearance and offers a peaceful rural setting. Despite its unassuming exterior, the interior exudes a captivating atmosphere, with a great visual presentation housed in the Great Barn.
Visited in June 1815 as part of a group trip from England. Travel arrangements were smooth with a lively march through Belgium and a warm welcome at Hougoumont. The locals were extremely enthusiastic and put on a grand display of fireworks musket fire and even a few cannon. The grounds were excellent with high walls shady gardens and a sturdy farmhouse that offered plenty of opportunities for climbing running and defending narrow gateways. Activities included constant musket volleys hand to hand wrestling with very determined French guests and an especially memorable session when they tried to burn down the North Gate. Our hosts from the Coldstream Guards did a marvellous job keeping spirits high and ensuring none of the guests overstayed their welcome. Highlights included the orchard skirmishes the brave stand at the walls and the sheer number of cannonballs that arrived free of charge. Catering was somewhat limited to bread cheese and powder smoke but the atmosphere was unbeatable. Would recommend to anyone looking for an energetic Belgian getaway with plenty of action and a guaranteed story to tell the grandchildren. Five stars.

Battle of Waterloo Hougoumont Farm is one of the most remarkable and historically significant sites of the Battle of Waterloo. Located about a 20-minute walk from the Lion’s Mound, it’s highly recommended to go on foot — the walk itself takes you right across the former battlefield, offering a powerful sense of connection to the events of 1815. The farm was the scene of some of the fiercest fighting of the entire battle. British and Allied troops defended it against repeated French attacks throughout the day, and its successful defense proved crucial in determining the outcome of the battle and Napoleon’s ultimate defeat. Today, the beautifully restored buildings house an engaging multimedia exhibition that vividly tells the story of those who fought and died there. You can still see the original walls, courtyards, and gates that witnessed the brutal combat, making the experience both educational and deeply moving. A visit to Hougoumont Farm is an unforgettable step back in time and an essential part of understanding the history of Waterloo.

During our recent trip to the Waterloo battlefield from Dublin, Ireland, one of the absolute highlights for my wife, my son and me was our visit to Hougoumont Farm. As a key location in the Battle of Waterloo and a place rich with historical significance, it completely exceeded our expectations. The moment we stepped inside the gates, we were struck by the atmosphere of the place. It has been beautifully restored while preserving its authenticity, and you can truly feel the weight of history in the air. Knowing that this small, fortified farm was the scene of some of the fiercest fighting during the battle made our visit all the more powerful. The multimedia presentation in the barn was incredibly well done—immersive, emotional and informative. It helped us imagine what the soldiers endured here, especially the heroic defense by British and Allied troops against overwhelming French attacks. My son, who is passionate about the Napoleonic era, was completely captivated. He had read about Hougoumont before, but seeing it in person gave him a whole new appreciation for its importance. Walking through the courtyards, the chapel and the orchard gave us a clear sense of how the battle unfolded. We were particularly moved by the restored chapel and the story of the closing of the North Gate, which was a turning point in the fight. The original gate is still there, battered but standing, and it's one of those details that really connects you to the past. The staff at Hougoumont were friendly and welcoming, and the signage was informative without being overwhelming. Everything was clean, well-maintained and thoughtfully laid out. The farm also offers a quiet, reflective space amid the larger battlefield site—a perfect balance between education and emotion. In short, visiting Hougoumont Farm was a deeply memorable experience for our whole family. It is a must-see if you are exploring Waterloo or have even a passing interest in European history. For us, it was more than a site—it was a story, a symbol of resilience and a deeply human chapter of the battle. Absolutely worth it.

What a cool place! The place are silent and a little cold, the rooms were a little small and there's not water, and some guys with grey skin and worn clothes tried to eat me, but, afortunely, i had my musket! don't go if there are no good players!

There's a real atmosphere here. Around 6000 were killed here, both sides. Don't forget to come here after the Waterloo museum. You can walk about 1k.

Awesome place, though I found out that when 2:00 AM hits on June 18th, some gray-skinned guys start to dig out of the ground, so watch out. Also, respect to the guy who always sets some buildings on fire when this date occurs to then put it off and rebuild them back. Here's how the farm looks at the day and at night. Hope you will do something with the gray-skinned guys, they already scare tourists away in San Sebastian, Tyrol, Paris, The Berezina River, Roscoff, Saint Peterburg, Copenhagen, Kaub, and Leipzig since 1812.

Amazing to see and learn about the history and bravery of both sides during the battle of Waterloo. The video show was very impressive too. You can still see the damage from musket balls in the walls and on the few trees that are left.

Great Experience, But a lot of people just kept being Sleepy around since it was dark, they stopped breathing…. Anyways, we have tons of people who were Prussian, British, and French, they keep on saying that “Cannibals” were there. Which they were right, on wave 1 there was a lot. And I survived until wave 36!! I would recommend VC Servers for that Old Guard!! 🤑🤑🔥🔥🗣️🗣️

Acte 3 is an exceptional venue where the privilege of being in the VIP area is offset by the inconvenience of having to descend to the lower section, known as the pegans, in order to obtain drinks before returning back to safety. This establishment presents itself as an ideal location for hosting various events such as concerts or parties. With its stylish ambiance and vibrant atmosphere, Acte 3 offers a superb setting for any occasion.
Fine club although drinks arent delivered in VIP so you have to descend to the pegans and then go back up to safety

Everything is wrong about this place. They want to host crowded events but they have tiny toilets at the entrance so people a queuing and the whole place is stuck because of that, worst of all, you have to pay for it. Also, they only sell overpriced 20cl bottles of water, this should be a crime! You can buy a big bottle of alcohol but not of water, it does not make any sense! It should be actually mandatory by law for them to provide free water. Beside this, their choices in non alcoholic beverage is close to zero.

Very RACIST at the door. Came from America on vacation with family and the doorsmen denied entry to us due to our skin color (Black) & joked about us as they did it. HORRIBLE experience, NEVER again will they have my support. If you don't support racism, then please don't give them your time & money.

Small park with a small lake full of ducks and other birds, very nice for a stroll. A Tea house in one side and a covered swimming pool on the other.

Paradise Park is like an oasis in a residential area, it is peaceful, has a nice albeit small lake with a nice walk around it. Nice place for jogging (terre battue in the alley and grass on the sides), however a bit small for people who want to do a long walk. Only small drawbacks: relatively few shaded areas to rest when it is very sunny and it is apparently under an air traffic lane and there was a bit of noise from a few planes flying at middle altitude. I happened to be in the area. Not sure I would travel from far away to go there as not exceptional but if I nearby would definitely go for a jogging or read a book.
Michael D — Google review
Improving each time we go there. The outdoor playground for children is open and quite well thought out (ie. small children can reach the slope without being carried). The main remaining issue is the various car parks are way too small to accommodate people cars.

Just two ponds with ducks. Traffic noise around it and nothing to see or do

(Translated by Google) Nice passing place to linger for two or three minutes in good weather, to have a bite to eat if you have the opportunity or to wait for your train for example because the station is not too far away, it's always better than stay planted on a platform. Otherwise, yes, unfortunately poorly attended at times... Too bad. (Original) Bel endroit de passage où s'attarder deux trois minutes par beau temps, pour y casser la croûte si on en a l'occasion ou attendre son train par exemple car la gare n'est pas trop loin, c'est toujours mieux que de rester planté sur un quai.
