Arbeia, South Shields Roman Fort is a historical site featuring the remains of a large Roman fort. Visitors can explore reconstructed gatehouses and living quarters, as well as a small museum on the premises. The fort offers an immersive experience into the ancient Roman era and provides insights into their military presence in the area. It's a great destination for history enthusiasts and those interested in archaeological sites.
What an interesting place! Free to enter. Museum exhibits to see and fully reconstructed life size Roman buildings to explore. I enjoyed being able to read all of the information around the site about the history. I love that the community is so proud of its history and cared enough to preserve an archaeological site of such importance for the public to see. The lovely ladies working there were very helpful and friendly.
Jessica P — Google review
Even way up in the north of England the Romans occupied the South Shields area. Building a fort to house soldiers and create a supply chain to try and defeat the Scots. But no dice there... This is a wonderful place for families to enjoy. There's a small museum and then signs for a self guided tour are very informative. Great for locals and tourists.
JASON R — Google review
It’s truly fascinating to step back into the Stone Age, preserved for over 10,000 years. The Arbeia Roman Fort is absolutely worth visiting and the best part is, entry is free! The centre provides maps and signs that bring the stories to life. One big question remains, though: how did people manage to build such incredibly thick stone walls?
Tamunotonye T — Google review
A little tricky to find but worth the effort. This is something of a gem surrounded by a school and housing - the story of the community is well told and it's worth taking time to explore the replica barracks and west tower. A venue that should be much better known, established to protect the mouth of the Tyne and, although not part of Hadrian's Wall, very much associated with that era. If you're in the vicinity, do visit! Oh, and it's free too!
Roger W — Google review
Little Roman gem found in South Shields. Two reconstructed buildings are very well done. Large area, smallish museum and shop. Be sure to donate something as its all free
B T — Google review
5 stars for the reconstruction if the Roman gate and barracks. Museum not the biggest but some interesting bits. Plenty of places to picnic. We locked the bikes inside the attraction. Tip the site closes end of September so check it's open when you plan to visit.
Andy001z — Google review
Free entry, free street parking and friendly staff. Educational and interesting displays. Can easily spend a few hours wondering around... 😊
Guy M — Google review
Amazing site to visit, please definitely stop by! The site is free to enter but donations are welcome. Before we entered, I actually told my partner that it could be a short stop because “how interesting can stone ruins be” AND BOY I WAS WRONG. The site has components that were reproduced using common building techniques at the time and were pieced together based on what was found while excavating the ruins. Additionally, they had descriptive information and insights about life in Arbeia. We even visited another Roman Fort site because Arbeia pleased us a lot, but it was not the same and I was disappointed 🥲

The Customs House is a historic arts center located in South Shields, overlooking the River Tyne. Originally built in the 1860s as a customs post for shipping, it has been beautifully renovated and now houses a cinema, theatre, art gallery, and bistro/bar. This Neoclassical building also features a 437-seater main auditorium, a smaller studio theatre, restaurant, exhibition space, offices, rehearsal room and community room.
Visited here today with a friend to watch a play. The staff were so kind, friendly, helpful and professional. So knowledgeable. A small but perfectly formed theatre. Very well run (some larger theatres could learn from them) food and drinks prices were very reasonable. Toilets were clean and well maintained.
Angela L — Google review
Visited the customs house with my children for a performance of "Taylormania". The venue was great, plenty of staff on hand directing people to seats. The seating was comfortable and facilities couldn't be faulted, the bar did get busy but queue moved quickly thanks to the staff.

Great restaurant breakfast is amazing you just can’t fault it!! !parking is absolutely great. Best parking in South Shields actually get yourselves to the Customs House in South Shields and enjoy it because me my friends family all enjoy the custom house five star. 👏🏼👏🏼 ❤️

Lovely place to visit with some cracking shows. Negatives are that the reception and cafe gets ridiculously busy whilst waiting for the shows to start. There's actually a quieter place upstairs to sit and relax but no information to let people know this.
Lisa F — Google review
Fantastic theatre.. went to see, thank abba for the music.. they were brilliant from start to finish.. a must see show.. the staff at the theatre were all lovely, a big thanks to the security team who ejected 4 drunken women, they didn't get the chance to spoil the show for everyone else.. well done lads.. swift action as well..

Great place to be. Love lunch me and the wife will definitely be back. The staff members Maisey and Sky are absolutely fantastic they totally go above and beyond. Thanks girls and thanks the customs house chefs 10-10

Staff are great. Venue is comfortable with plenty of parking. Went last night to see Roy Orbison and Travelling Wilburys after seeing them last year. Have to say this year's show was a big disappointment. Out of a two hour show over 30 minutes was spent on talkng about raffle tickets, who was married to Roy Orbison, merchandise sales, then having the raffle and telling us how far each band member had travelled to the show. The whole show had a very amateurish feel about it and the music not as tight as last year. At £31.50 a ticket I expected better. Will not go next year.

What a magnificent place we went to a surprise 70th birthday party. This venue was a perfect choice for the event. There should be many more of these venues around the country as this one is a huge asset to the area.

Ocean Beach Pleasure Park is a sprawling amusement park located in South Shields, Tyne and Wear. It offers a wide array of attractions suitable for visitors of all ages. From thrilling rollercoasters to family-friendly rides like carousels and dodgems, the park has something for everyone. Additionally, there are indoor activities such as laser tag, arcades, and bowling available for those seeking a break from the outdoor fun.
Went on a Friday (after 5pm) to get rides at 50% off! Very worth it! As someone who suffers from motion sickness, the rides definitely aren’t for the weak. Do take caution and ride at your own risks as my soul left my body after just 2 rides. I bought 115 credits for 100 pounds and shared it among 10 people. It was more than enough!
Jun C — Google review
We have been here many times. Always when the sun is shining. It's a lovely spot. Old fashioned rides that most people can enjoy. Having been on The Waltzers dozens of times I bribed my wife to go on with me. We are both over 50. My closing argument before we got on was 'no one is ever sick on The Waltzers'. How wrong i was! Due to very few people waiting to go on, the operator left the ride running for at least twice as long as normal. It spun and it spun, and it spun some more! We both just managed to keep our breakfast to ourselves. It took us several hours to get over it. Really. Great fun though, and very memorable.
Richard B — Google review
It's a nice place where people can enjoy and have fun. We went to this amusement park and we rode on the roller coaster twice.

First time visiting this museum and I've lived in the area all my life. Great place with a fantastic little tea room. Definitely recommending visiting. Plus it's free entry.
Dawn T — Google review
Went here for something to eat as Morrisons only had 1 member of staff in kitchen and was asked to wait 30 minutes for not only fish and chips but also a tuna and cheese toastie. Anyway, went here, waited 5 minutes before ordering, no quiche so another toastie, pot of tea, not boiling hot and another 10 minute wait. While waiting took a picture 😕
Arthur D — Google review
Absolutely brilliant museum! Really enjoyed my first visit here. The exhibits were local themed which I loved, good array of different subjects and eras and for once not all aimed souly for a family audience, yay! The art gallery was a pleasant surprise, some really beautiful works in a calm environment. On day of visit there was a good local photography group exhibition too. Entry to the museum and gallery is free, friendly staff and although I didn't get a chance to try it there looked a good cafe too! Highly recommend.

Marsden Beach, located just outside of South Shields, is a picturesque hidden gem with stunning cliffs and a beautiful stretch of golden sand. The beach is famous for its unique rock formations, including the impressive Marsden Rock sea stack. Visitors can also explore the historic Marsden Grotto pub-hotel, which was built into the cliffside in the 1780s. Access to the beach is convenient with nearby parking and dog-friendly areas.
I went early in the morning in October. The cliffs are stunning! The beach has a beautiful rugged charm to it. Lots of people walking their dogs around. The walk back up was steep.
Toni S — Google review
Beautiful small strip of beach and Cliff side walks. I have a special love for this place as its where I met my partner. I do recommend to anyone who likes to go for walks and loves the coast.
Andrew B — Google review
Tonight me and Star had a lovely walk along Marsden Beach, it was quite rocky but great for both us to get some exercise. Really nice Friday evening for the walk and will definitely come again. Star loved getting to go in the sea that now she's soaked!
Matthew T — Google review
Amazing place that you don't want to leave. Spectacular view! You can get here by bus X34 from Newcastle. Definitely worth visiting!
Олена С — Google review
Very beautiful. You can see a lot of birds nesting and impressive cliffs.
Max S — Google review
First visit here and rate it 👍 Parking is easy and right by the beach, £5 for all day - up to 2200hrs. This beach is dog friendly and no restrictions. Location is easy to find and right on the coastal footpath. Access to the beach is via steps at two locations and both are fairly steep, but doable. The beach itself is a mix of sand and areas of rock, so plenty of pools and formations to explore.
Marcus W — Google review
Really loved walking here with my mother and family gorgeous place for a walk
Calvyn K — Google review
The top part of the beach is very pebbley but when the tide is out you get a golden, sandy beach, backed by tall cliffs and is best known for its breathtaking rock formations, which include a number of sea-stacks and rock arches. Most notable among these is Marsden Rock a 30 metre (100ft) tall sea stack which once featured a stunning arch before it sadly collapsed into the sea . A number of legends and ghost stories surround the cliffs, caves and the pub itself, all of which were once the haunt of smugglers. The views of the cliffs and the craggy coastline will take your breath away. A seabird sanctuary is close to the beach and this is a good place to see gulls, cormorants, kittiwakes and fulmars. Access is either a lift with a donation at Marsden grotto, or steep stairs at the side of Marsden grotto.

Nature & Parks
North Marine Park is a delightful destination that has recently been revitalized, offering visitors an upgraded fitness area and a brand-new playground for children. A gentle incline leads you to the top of Lawe Top, where breathtaking views of the River Tyne and North Sea await. This park complements its sibling, South Marine Park, which features a serene lake perfect for hiring swan pedalos and enjoying rides on a charming miniature steam train.
It looks like a small park at first, I've seen a squirrel everytime. Great place to walk your dog, with pathways through woodland, a big field with pic nic tables, a children's playground. The park originally built in the 18th century has a bowling green, I think it is 5£ for a family or 2£ a person. The park can lead you to the beach, a lovely beach, no dogs allowed May to September, bring a pop up tent, what a great day, not a penny spent.
Yvonne D — Google review
Great park on the beach lovely little train lots to do.
Lisa D — Google review
Whilst the North & South Marine parks complement each other by providing a different experience, this is my favourite of the two. It is bigger than the South Park but it's outstanding feature is the magnificent views from the hill at the North end which has lots of seating on the benches provided. Whilst it doesn't have the tourist facilities of the South Park, it does have several children's play areas and several bowling greens. Also a community garden and meeting point.
Miles M — Google review
Lovely park, checkout the recent names of the local soldiers put on the walkway.
Syed A — Google review
Beautiful park and usually very clean. Good for tranquil walks and very nice views of sea. Play area for the kids and plenty of benches.
Anisur M — Google review
Very peaceful and a lovely sea view as you walk up, seats are situated along the winding pathway so no problems here for push chairs and wheel chairs as you walk to the top. Great views of the North and South Pier's.
Dennis T — Google review
Although it lacks the amenities of the South Marine Park, it has been recently renovated to include a comprehensive children's play area and has stunning views of the Harbour from the hilltop.Plus lots of flowers providing colour during spring through to autumn.
Jim M — Google review
The new steps and walkway are a nice improvement. It will be interesting to see the finished refurbishment in 2021. Its about time that the North Marine Park was shown some TLC.

Souter Lighthouse and The Leas, located in Whitburn, SR6 7NH, is a picturesque destination with a stunning view on clear days. Visitors can enjoy picnics at the picnic benches near the lighthouse or find a grassy spot along the clifftops. There are also children's play areas and a cafe available.
This lighthouse is a lovely place to visit on a clear day. One can climb the stairs to the top of the lighthouse and enjoy a wonderful view of the coastline scenery. There are rocks just off the coastline, easily visible from the top, with hundreds of birds, such as Black-legged Kittiwakes, Great Cormorants and Guillemots. The coastal paths in the area makes for some wonderful walking options with views north towards Whitley Bay. The small café has the usual National Trust meals and snacks with can be a welcome stop after a walk.

We went here yesterday for a family day out, first time here and we all absolutely loved it. Beautiful location and lots of lovely walks. The lighthouse was amazing and my kids loved it especially at top looking out. We had food in the cafe and the service was great and the staff were friendly. The toilets were clean and tidy. They had kids toys out on the lawn next to the lighthouse which my kids and niece loved.
Jamie-lee B — Google review
A great visit & beautiful scenic walking location. Impacted slightly negatively by OAPs and people bringing small children. It is of course a lighthouse, the stairs are of course very steep / ladder like and at the top it is OF COURSE very high. Baffling that less able bodied people who are clearly terrified of heights would climb to the top but here we are! Guides were great, beautiful scenery - would recommend 👌
Dani C — Google review
Explore a lighthouse, why not 😅. Absolutely loved it here. Sea air and sand. Really pretty National Trust. My twins enjoyed playing football ⚽️ Could have stayed all day to be honest with that view. I will be visiting again in near future. We loved there new pin badge. Fingers crossed they release a new one 🙏🏻 🙂 disabled parking was easy, members get free parking if you scan your members card. Cafe available and outside seating.

Fascinating site. Very knowledgeable local guides with lots of details about the lighthouse and the people who lived at and staffed it. Do not miss climbing the lighthouse where you may be invited to rotate the 4 ton lantern! If you children love "The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch" this is the place to take them! Occasionally the foghorn is sounded, the dates for that are worth looking out for.
Marc T — Google review
Great views from the top and scenic local walks that make this a lovely afternoon. Perfect if you like seabirds and you might even spot a dolphin. We spent about an hour in the lighthouse itself and John who was up by the lamp at the top definitely knew his stuff. One of the last lighthouses of it's kind, hearing about the technology and history was really interesting and the kids loved getting to turn the 4.5 tonne lamp. They sound the fog horns twice a week when the birds aren't nesting so check their Facebook page if you want to time your visit to hear those too.
Hayley T — Google review
Great place for a bit of history and in a beautiful setting . Bare in mind it's only accessable low tide ( same as holy island ) . We also were lucky to see seals which one of the national trust workers had set up a binocular for visitors 👍🏻

Nestled in South Shields, South Marine Park is a delightful Victorian-era gem that offers a perfect blend of relaxation and recreation. One of the best parks of the northeast England. It has everything from green spaces to kids' play area, cafeteria to public toilets, a lake, a brandstand and an unbelievable kids' mini train which goes all around the park. Truly a clean and well maintained park.

Great, fun-filled place for a day out There is a lake with lots of ducks, also swan boats to ride around in, Minchella's ice cream place directly next to it with delicious food, a playground less than a minute away for the kids to play on and a train that often circles the park which is a great time for young ones. The park is also filled with lots of trees and plants, is wheelchair accessible with very few steps and is directly next to the fair and arcade, overall a great place to go on a day out with the family

Brilliant place to take the kids so many interesting facts dotted around displayed in a fun way and artifacts for them to learn about! Plenty of interactive displays we especially loved trying to build a roman bridge it got the whole group involved! The house is fantastic to explore my son really took everything in! From the warm welcome, to the lovely and reasonably-priced cafe, and the shop with an amazing array of tasteful items, this venue is worth visiting any time, being open also on Sundays. Exhibitions are always well-curated. Staff are attentive and helpful. Re the recent FREE day-time disco; it was fab! Can we have another? However, (bearing in mind the age of attendees) I was dismayed to see that feedback we were invited to give on leaving, was via a QCode. I am not being ageist but many acquaintances don't have smart 'phone and/or the internet. Please consider an alternative means of feedback next time.

This was a great place to sit quietly and get some work done. Canny little cafe on site too for drinks and snacks. A great view to look out onto.

Finally got to visit despite watching it being built and it's a beautiful building, very modern. Walking around I love how despite appearing open plan it has been designed with specific zones in mind. The area that really stood out was the library itself and browsing the stacks it was easy to forget you were in such a huge building, kudos to the staff to for keeping the display books relevant, it's obvious they are refreshed daily with current affairs in mind. I loved the Ridley Scott exhibition which was a nice surprise but it would have been nice to have seen a bit more on Tony Scott, another local lad with an equally incredible portfolio. Can't wait to see what the future holds for The word.

Lovely building, great open and light space. Shame about the cycling parking. There was no signage showing where it was, when we did find it, it was really good. Had a pirate exhibition in which was presented very well. Good cake.

Jarrow Hall: Anglo-Saxon Farm, Village, and Bede Museum is a captivating destination that transports visitors back to the 7th century. Located just a short drive or quick metro ride from South Shields, this expansive site spans 11 acres and celebrates the life of Venerable Bede, often referred to as the Father of English History.
What a wonderful place. Visited when the dragons were on display, great little museum with stories of Anglo Saxon life, a farm and a replica village. My son loved it. The cafe was excellent as well, great service and nice food. Only thing I would say is it took a while to enter as only one person was on the till.
Jonathan D — Google review
Attended for the dragon parade and had a blast! The farm, village, and museum were enough to keep an 11 and 13 year old interested from 12-4, and they didn't want to leave. It was quite busy just after the parade, but we all enjoyed it!

This place has so much potential, But no animal feed, staff looked stressed. Lady on front desk was lovley. Museum we ok. Building works going on. But lots of children doing activities in the halls/ classroom
Lou — Google review
Disappointing although inexpensive visit. Everything appeared more shabby than last year. Access to various areas was limited. The cafe is ok but we sat outside & had a relatively long wait for 3 cups of coffee. Toilet facilities are adequate but not particularly pleasant. Staff were polite & helpful. There is access to a very nice public park.

Great place for kids, there's animals and plenty of outdoor space. Cafe on sight and loads of room for picnics. Play park on sight for kids aswell. You pay once and get an annual ticket, not expensive at all.
Lauren G — Google review
I wanted to like this place I'd planned the visit for a couple of months while I was in the area , on entering there was workman and scaffolding, through the main entrance the fountain wasn't working and had some dirty water still in it , wasn't as historic as I imagined, a few long house styled thatched buildings , some ancient breeds of cow, sheep , goat , horse , pigs nothing much else I thought there would be reenactors explaining how it was to visitors , you've got to use your imagination it needs more information boards or interactive boards , discount for people on benefits and your ticket lasts a full year , I won't be rushing back
Mike A — Google review
We have been before but on Saturday the 13th it was an open day and free entry. There us an indoor museum and an outdoor one that represents how are ancestors would've lived during the Anglo-Saxon times. We took our grandson this time and he liked seeing the animals, the cats and goats in particular.
Fran R — Google review
The history of the venerable Bede was fascinating. His life, works and legacy. I was not aware of the "cult of Bede". Anglo Saxon village was fun, though I can see it a bigger hit with younger children. Liked the pigs! Experimental archaeologists explained about the chicken coop they were constructing. Not sure how often I would go but definitely worth it if you're fond of history and want to know what happened after the Romans.

Sandhaven Beach, located near South Tyne Pier, offers a stunning expanse of sandy shoreline flanked by dunes, providing a remote feel even during peak season. This Blue Flag-awarded beach is ideal for families in the summer, with clean waters for paddling and rockpools to explore at low tide. RNLI lifeguards are on duty from late May to early September, and surf lessons are available under suitable conditions.
A stunning spot for a walk in any season. The beach is incredibly wide, so even with plenty of visitors, it never feels crowded. The atmosphere is serene, and it’s the only place I’ve ever witnessed a double rainbow—a truly magical experience.

One of the best sandy beaches in the North East of England. Ideal for windsurfing with no rocks along it's full length. RNLI Lifeguards are present during the summer season. It's tidal with a long shallow sandy intertidal zone.

Lovely beach to visit on the weekend, not that busy and is a must visit. Would argue that its the best sandy beach in the north east, its great. Along the beach is different small businesses such as ice cream or slushies. The beach is dog friendly and the dogs had a whale of a time playing on the sand dunes :) Would 100% recommend a visit

Lovely pool to take children of any age. Kept very clean and tidy. Plenty of changing space and showers. Nice little family rooms with shower included in the space so helpful when there are little ones to keep close watch on them so they can't run off and get hurt. Pools are a good temperature. Nice variety of things for all ages to enjoy. All round good place to go. Close to the beach too if fancied a visit there.

The staff are really friendly and helpful. The staff explained the best package to pay for to get the best value. Being a Yorkshire man this is helpful. There is two pools one with a slide and a traditional swimming pool. The centre is spotless. The gym is well equipped with up to date equipment that are really easy to use. Staffing are on hand to help. I just used the gym and pool for the week whilst I was staying nearby whilst attending a training course. The cafe is nice and has a Costa as well. When I am up this way again I will be using the centre.

Lovely gym - clean and modern, has everything you need and can easily get parking as multiple car parks (if you get a membership with permit). However, not enough mats (two) in the gym, so I and others are always waiting around! There is also a staff member who always seems to be using the gym equipment or mats rather than actually working? It would be 5 stars if more mats available or another room for this type of workout. Could get rid of some treadmills as these are loads and never all been used at once…staff aren’t very helpful either

Great for my early Sunday morning swim. Staff have been helpful when ive asked for help with anything. Clean toilets and changing areas. Only gripe is the little cafe doesnt open till 10 on Sundays so doesnt cover the early birds which is a shame. The cafe at Hebburn seems to open earlier. Would have been 5⭐️ otherwise.
Diane P — Google review
I very often notice that people cut their nails and scrape off skin in the sauna, creating a mess and a lot of filth. I feel absolutely disgusted in such situations. This issue was reported to the management of the leisure centre, but no action was taken. It seems that the visitors care more about hygiene than the administration does. And since the pool is regularly visited by many children, it would be appropriate to escalate this to higher authorities in order to prompt the administration to take an interest.

This is a beautiful sandy beach and dog friendly all year round, however I think they should adopt the same policy as Whitley Bay where they have a section of the beach where dogs aren't allowed between May and September. A promenade & seawall runs along the top of the beach where there is a memorial to the men from Tyneside who died during the Gallipoli campaign.

Visited on Good Friday - was lovely and quiet! Staff on reception were friendly and welcoming. The staff on the trampolines were great fun - guy with cap and Manager black hoodie on entertaining my kids with his back flips etc and helped my autistic son with his socks. Lovelly experience! My five year old thoroughly enjoyed it! There's plenty of space and lots of staff Withholding one star only because the cafe was in a state of disarray and one very rushed staff on the till. Otherwise a great quick trip to consume the energy of an active kid!
Natalie K — Google review
It was a cold and rainy day so took the kids here to burn off some energy. Firstly, the pricing... strange... I booked online as I'd heard it was cheaper and it was, £9.85 per child so it isn't cheap, but if you don't book online its £12.55 per child. Not sure why they do it that way as you still have to queue, still get to a till but instead of them taking your money, they just tick your name off a list. Secondly, you can only wear their socks, so there's another few quid. Luckily, my 2 already had the socks from a party they'd been to some time before so I didn't have to buy their overpriced garments. It says get there 20 minutes early so you can watch the safety video, this didn't actually start until 1 minute before so by the time they'd watched it, they were in to their "jump" time. However, the safety video was very good. In the session before ours, the drops to the airbag was open, but during our session, they closed it. Not because anything was broken, but because the staff member watching it would rather spend time laughing and joking with his colleague and told people it was closed. When I questioned him about it, he didn't even bother to make up a reason, he just looked sheepish and walked off behind the other trampolines out of the way. The jump arena itself is actually very good, the place is clean and has a party like atmosphere and it's great to see kids and adults enjoying themselves. The cafe, whilst a little overpriced, was good with a great view over the arena. Screens would be nice so you could see the back of the arena and keep an eye on the kids. All in all, aside from a few niggles, the place is good fun.

During my recent visit, I was struck by Conversation Piece by Juan Muñoz. The installation showcases figures arranged in small groups, some standing apart, giving the impression of deep conversation, reminiscent of 18th-century paintings of informal gatherings. Locals endearingly refer to these figures as "Weebles" after the wobbling toys from the 70s and 80s. Muñoz's portrayal, with many figures having their eyes closed or gazing into the distance, evokes a sense of quiet mystery and eerie stillness, in line with his fascination with sound and radio.

Interesting group of art sculptures near to Littlehaven Beach. 'Conversation Piece' was created by Spanish artist Juan Muñoz in 1999. It comprises 22 bronze figures positioned around an open space in the dunes at Littlehaven, South Shields, each approximately 1.5 metres high and around a quarter of a ton in weight. Their position at the entrance to the River Tyne welcomes visitors from both the land and sea beyond. The figures are arranged in small groups, with occasional isolated ones, seemingly engaging in conversation with each other.

Trow Point is a picturesque area in South Shields, featuring a beautiful beach and the Trow Rock Disappearing Gun. The gun, originally designed in the late 19th century, was meant to be concealed underground for reloading before emerging for firing. Accessible from a nearby car park or via a leisurely walk along the promenade, Trow Point offers stunning views of the North Sea and coastline.
Beautiful beach with crystal-clear water and soft sand. It’s clean, peaceful, and perfect for a relaxing afternoon. Plenty of space even on weekends. Definitely recommend!

Great views from this part of the cliff tops. Lots of parking nearby.

Amazing view point to look over Sandhaven Beach from this uphill coastal cliff. walking along the cliff tops at south shields you come across the 'Trow point disappearing gun battery'. Its a historical point which marks the end of the cliffs before the south shields beach and represented by an old gun mounted on its concrete base. Trials of the 'Hiram disappearing gun. took place here in the 1880's. Wort the walk up just for the views. Owned by the national trust and free. Only spoilt by vandals putting graffiti on the gun. Still worth the walk and it won’t disappoint you after seeing the beautiful coastline

I am a frequent visitor to this beach. I love it! We park the car by the pleasure gardens and walk through, enjoying all the activity of the boating lake, playground, and ice-cream stalls. Then we walk through Ocean Beach Pleasure park, enjoying all the lights and sounds of the funfair. Then walk along the promenade until we get to Trow Point. It’s the loveliest walk! Perfect for a warm summers evening. The beach itself is clean and spacious. The water is clean and beautiful. And the cliffs are stunning with amazing views as far as Tynemouth Priory. Thoroughly recommend. Ps. There are also several public toilets on route, one in the park by the boating lake. One at the far side of the funfair and one at the far end of the raised, covered promenade half way up.

Amazing weather and views today. Great parking location for a starting point on the coastal walk. Prices are cheap enough for parking and free disabled parking spaces.

Trow Point, South Shields, is home to a fascinating replica of a disappearing gun. Originally installed in 1877 as part of experiments into the use of disappearing gun mounts, it showcases the innovative concept developed by Captain CS Moncrief of the Edinburgh Militia Artillery. During the Crimean War, Captain Moncrief witnessed the vulnerability of British gunners during counter bombardment while loading their muzzle loading guns. In response, he conceived the idea of guns mounted in concealed emplacements that would only be exposed at the moment of firing. His concept gained approval from a Royal Commission in 1859, although initial designs were rejected. Finally, the carriage system was accepted in 1867 and began to be deployed on a larger scale from 1871. This replica at Trow Point stands as a testament to the ingenuity and advancements in military technology during that era. It provides a unique opportunity to learn about the history and development of disappearing gun mounts. A visit to this site is a must for history enthusiasts and those intrigued by the evolution of artillery tactics.j

Trow Point is a beautiful scenic area. Close by is a car park or it can be accessed by walking along the promenade at South Shields. On top of Trow Point is the Trow Rock Disappearing Gun. During the Crimean War (1854-56) the gun and also the gunners were vulnerable to counter bombardment as they reloaded, so Captain CS Moncrief devised the idea of having the gun lower down into its concrete turret during the reloading process. Then it would just pop up as it was ready to be fired. The original gun was designed and installed in 1877 and this version was mechanical meaning that the recoil would make it hide in the turret, but then the gunners would need to elevate it back once loaded. There was exploration into using both hydraulic and pneumatic solutions, but were unsuccessful and the gun was eventually discontinued without being used in action The gun you see today is actually a replica mounted by the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) in the 1990's.

Mindlock Escape Games is a unique and exciting attraction for families in York. With games that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, there is something for everyone to enjoy! From simple puzzles to more complex challenges, Mindlock has something for everyone. Whether you're looking for an activity to keep the kids entertained or a way to break the monotony of a visit to York, Mindlock is perfect!
Easily one of the best escape rooms I've ever done! Even though we got caught in traffic getting there the staff were very lovely and waited for us an extra few minutes, the setup was clear and understandable, Amelia, our game master was very kind and cheerful. The game itself (Viking Valhalla) was immaculate, perfectly organised and very engaging. Though it's their highest difficulty level room it was very forgiving and we still managed to get out in time. Overall great fun, very reasonable price and I can't recommend it enough!
Barbara B — Google review
Absolutely brilliant escape room! We did the V90, and the challenge was the perfect level of engagement for us. The staff were brilliant and extremely friendly/helpful, too. Highly recommend, I’ve done other rooms in York and these guys are definitely the best for any level!
George O — Google review
Clean, and well made with good puzzles however the room we did (Virus 90) was too small for a party of 6. Personally I'd recommend a maximum of 4 adults for this room as it was way too small a space for our party. (We have done another room with 5 which was fine and we enjoyed it more. )
Steve W — Google review
Up there as one of the best escape rooms we've played. Friendly staff, a good range of interesting puzzles and helpful clues when we needed them (not just a generic clue either). Our group ranged from 7-81 and everyone got involved and had fun.

Had a blast solving a crime at Mindlock today! I've played Dark Arts, Valhalla, and now Cludeo for my birthday and it was brilliant, tricky puzzles but not too hard, loads of fun solves! Jess was absolutely wonderful as well, making sure we weren't stuck on anything for too long and gave much needed clues when we asked for them. Will be back soon for V90. Thanks Jess!!
Niah T — Google review
It was our first ever escape room experience and what an experience it was! My wife and I found it tricky but very, very enjoyable and our game master was so lovely. Definitely will be going again to do another one! Thank you Mindlock York!
Matthew B — Google review
Just had yet another amazing escape at Mindlock York, having now played Cludeo, Valhalla and Dark Arts. The amazing team, and Jess our host, helped us throughout our experience with well-timed hints and made the experience very enjoyable. We will definitely be coming back to complete v90 and mad Alice rooms.
Ewan C — Google review
Really excellent and value for money, we did the Dark Arts room and with a bit of help from the very lovely staff managed to escape. The puzzles are just on the right side of challenging and there’s some real thought behind the layouts

This is part of the Cycle the Solar System Cycle Route, the first Cycle Route by Sustrans (who have gone on to build many major routes across the UK). The models are a little tired and grubby but its a great way to get out and active for the day!! The Voyager model is really easy to see and appears on the cycle path just after Pluto, when the path comes close to the A19 main road.

The Sustran path is a wonderful amenity but it needs a lot of repairs to it because of tree roots damage. PEOPLE SHOULD RESPECT THE QUITE PATH AND LEARN TO TAKE THEIR RUBBISH HOME BECAUSE THERE ARE NO BINS. THEY NEED TO RESPECT THE WILD AND MAKE PLASTIC ALWAYS GOES HOME WITH THEM

Park
Temple Memorial Park is a highly enjoyable location for badminton enthusiasts, offering friendly and helpful staff, clean courts, and well-maintained equipment. The spacing between the courts ensures a pleasant playing experience without interfering with neighboring games. Additionally, this park is surrounded by a lovely green area that serves as a delightful spot for walks or as a shortcut to nearby shopping areas.
Lovely sea of manicured grass, an amazing place for me and my dog Ziggy to enjoy. Just a fabulous setting to be outside enjoying the "benefits" of having a Cocker Spaniel. I would urge anyone to go and experience themselves.
Michael N — Google review
Great park, mostly left to grow wild in many places which is really good for the wildlife. Unfortunately many people litter here which is sad to see. Disrespecting where you live especially when it offers such a great place to come to enjoy nature never ceases to confuse me… why people would defecate on and pollute their own doorstep is beyond me but some people are ignorant and uneducated. They do not realise the importance of it and the fact that we need nature to survive. Maybe more parents need to teach that to the children they bring here. Despite that I was able to enjoy carrying out the RSPB bird survey before the kids on motorbikes and quad bikes moved in. Perhaps a dedicated area for this within the park is needed so others can enjoy the space and peace too. Dog walkers need to clean up after their dogs more too. During regular observations I often think …. Is that a bird or a plastic bag- in the tree there…not how we want to view nature is it! Birds and wildlife deserve better. Grateful to have this on my doorstep nonetheless 💚🦜 I’ve included photos here of the bits cutting the rubbish out to show how beautiful it looks without plastic bottles, cans wrappers and more that get carelessly discarded here. Some bins might help but doesn’t take much to keep it in you and dispose of it yourself. It’s not as if you’re carrying a ton of bricks is it. Come on people! Do better!

A nice little walk to spend some time whilst waiting for family to finish at the gym. Winding paths and lovely scenery and wildlife. Shame about the EBikes that disturb the peace but I doubt they care about their impact. Didn't put us off getting our steps in
Aprils G — Google review
Amazing place for walking with a dog. Friendly for children and disabled. I recommend
Cilka M — Google review
Terrible place for antisocial behaviour, balaclavad individuals are running around on ebikes, escooters, trail bikes, just so dangerous if you are walking on any of the paths, these idiots have no concept of danger or causing harm, don't bother phoning Northumberland Police as they are as much use as a chocolate fireguard here.
Colin B — Google review
My local green area is always a pleasure to visit, whether for a walk or short-cut to the local shopping area. It has grown in popularity due to the pandemic and family groups picnic and play and exercise there. The changing seasons are a delight to see and photograph.
Ann S — Google review
The Council have allowed this once beautiful Memorial Park to be destroyed by motorbikes, quad bikes and some sort of 4x4 this is a prequel to the council allowing a private sports complex being built on 38 acres of land with a 2 metre high fence around it. After a very concentrated effort by members of the Friends of Temple Memorial Park on a massive cleaning operating the park is becoming a beautiful place to walk, take your children and walk your pets. Over 500 bags of litter and rubbish have been removed. Burnt out motorcycles, carpets, settees, chairs, tables, plastic swimming pool, rabbit hutch you name it we have cleared it. Plastic bags on lampposts for litter all of this done by a dedicated small group of people who want this park to be beautiful for all the people of South Shields.

The building started life as an old seaside shelter and it was converted into a small community theatre in 1948.  It was used by a number of societies until the Westovian Theatre Society took over the building in 1977. Lovely little theatre ideal for panto. Very helpful with my disabled Wife, couldn't do enough for us. This year's panto was the best ever in over 20 years. Update 20th November 2024 still has the same friendly staff and the Panto was great and hilarious.
