Yayo Daporta is a renowned restaurant located in Cambados, housed in a historic stone townhouse. The establishment offers creative set menus that showcase modern interpretations of traditional regional dishes. It has gained recognition, being included in the Michelin Guide for its exceptional Galician cuisine. The restaurant is run by siblings Yayo and Esther Daporta and has been serving exquisite seafood dishes since 2005.
Excellent presentation of seafood around the area. Good value in context of one Michelin star. Also excellent Albariño wine recommendation by the sommelier. Service is unlike London but we go for the food not the service.
Ming C — Google review
Its a nice restaurant, but if you go with such a huge expectation of being a michelin restaurant, you wont be satisfied. It would have been nice if every dish had more texture, flavour and temperature variety. Again, if you dont have expectation, its a nice restaurant.

Beautiful food and service - creative preparation and exceptional ingredients. If you want to experience the Galician food culture in a refined environment with great wine Yayo Daporta is highly recommended.

We loved every morsel and sip. Creative delicious and so friendly. It’s a journey of discovery and taste.

Hands down the best food and wine I had in Cambados! The food was so good I forgot to take any pictures until I was half way through dessert 😁 The grilled asparagus salad is excellent as is the Galician style cannelloni. 2 star dishes stood out though - the gorgeous little pot of egg, chorizo and potato cream was outstanding and the apple empañada for dessert was one of the best desserts I've had for a long time..
Mike P — Google review
Lovely dining experience. We ate from the"August" degustation menu. Food was artistically prepared and tasted amazing.
Diane E — Google review
Our reservation was for 830pm but I think they only really open at 9pm so it was a bit of a slow start. After that, though, everything was flawless - the food was creative but delicious (not just for the sake of being different) whilst the wine pairing was the best I have had in maybe forever

Update- I had a food poisoning right after eating in this place - I could not leave the hotel for two days and my vacation was ruined

A Fonte Do Viño is a highly recommended restaurant located in the heart of Cambados, offering a menu focused on quality ingredients and modern cooking techniques. The establishment is known for its exceptional service and top-notch products. Dishes not to be missed include the berberechos, percebes, pate de centollo, and raya a la gallega. The restaurant also offers the option of ordering half portions to sample more dishes.
What a great find!! This restaurant is so nice. The setting, we sat in the terrace in this beautiful quaint square and they made our dog feel very welcome (he even got a bowl of water with ice in it!!) The food was stunning, super fresh and delicious. If you want a traditional Galician meal this is your place! The staff were also really friendly and the food was served with a smile and in a timely manner. We will definitely come back!! Thank you for an incredible meal experience.

A must go place for seafood lovers when you are in Cambados and Galicia. Great price-quality, fresh seafood and a good wine list that you can try typical Albariño wines even from the restaurant. Highly recommended!
Murat M — Google review
Found this gem on a sunny afternoon in Spain and didn’t want to leave. Charred pimientos de Padrón with sea salt, clams in garlicky broth perfect for bread-dipping, smoky paprika skewers with crispy fries, and a seafood stew that tasted like the coast. Cold beer, warm service, and licor café over ice to finish. Exactly how an afternoon here should taste.
Emily T — Google review
This was the best meal we had in Galicia! Not only was the seafood 10/10 but the service also made the experience! Super friendly people. Will definitely go back.
Anna T — Google review
A local gem serving traditional Galician dishes and excellent seafood. We weren’t super hungry and tried just a few of their tapas which were very delicious. The local wine was very nice and an excellent pairing to the seafood. Great service and welcoming waiters. Would definitely recommend coming here if you’re after an authentic local restaurant with excellent value for money.
Katja B — Google review
Fantastic seafood restaurant. Excellent choice of superb products from the expensive to more basic shellfish, I tried their homemade spider crab pate which they served with gluten free dried bread and it was so tasty. The fresh salad as well was great, It was washed down with a decent house white albariño wine. Service was attentive & professional. I enjoyed eating on the square side terrace in front of the restaurant watching the locals passing by and where they have live music too.
Mark A — Google review
We have been looking forward to coming back to this restaurant and it did not disappoint. We shared razor clams, mussels, croquettes and the braised octopus for starters and they were excellent. The hake and cod for mains with garlic and paprika oil were lovely. Great Albariño wine and friendly service. Spent E38 each. Will definitely go again.

Located on Monte de la Pastora in Cambados, the Ruinas de Santa Mariña is a romantic and peaceful site. These ruins are the remains of a Gothic church built in the 15th century over an older Romanesque church from the 12th century. The structure includes a single nave with transverse arches, side chapels, and a sacristy. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk from the town center to reach this historic monument.
Great place! Lovely cemetery with beautiful ruins and trees around, quiet and respectful. Really deserves a visit. I think is always open

The ruins of the Church Santa Mariña Dozo are located on one of the side of Mount A Pastora, in the outskirts of Cambados, and constituate one of the most emblematic monuments in the Salnés region. Its construction began at the beginning of the 15th century. The Church of Santa Mariña, patron saint of Cambados was abandoned in the middle of the 19century and its remains, it has no roof or facade. The Church is an example of maritime gothic
Paul D — Google review
Lovely ruins and cemetery. But, for Elden Rings fan, try to roll near a wall as it may open to a catacomb. Also, don’t forget to pick up the sacred tear from underneath Marika’s statue. 😉 Just kidding. Go and enjoy the resemblance.
Iliya P — Google review
Cool ruins, but remember it's still a funcional cemetery so retain some decency and keep your inner instagrammer at bay. Free entry.
Federico C — Google review
An interesting architectural relic, but please be considerate, it's an active cemetery.

What an amazing place to visit, so peaceful, you could just sit up here for hours in peace worth the visit ans the bonus is the town is also lovely, wish could spend more time here. Its a simple walk from town centre up the road approx 10 to 15min walk. Go and explore the hill behind up to the cross amazing views

San Sadurniño tower, located in Cambados, is a historic watchtower dating back to the times of Viking raids. It is situated on a small island and can be reached by taking a scenic 10-minute walk along the waterfront from the town center. The tower holds fascinating history, having been repurposed as both a fort and a church before falling into ruins. Despite its dilapidated state, nearby homes still stand, adding to the charm of the area.
We like this view point, better to visit in the weekend - least tourists, you can get a nice photo. Visiting in the afternoon having a good sun light direction for photography:)
JD — Google review
Interesting walk to the remnants of a church. Originally a lookout point for invading Vikings. Be respectful of its condition and heritage. Saw tourists climbing over it for their selfies.
Raj B — Google review
Went during low tide. Tower is a historical monument. Many years ago the tower was not accessible, except via boat. The walkway path makes it now possible for visitors to enjoy it by walking to it.
Rosario R — Google review
this little island accessible via a small stone bridge is really lovely. Walk through the gorgeous streets to get there. Were there at low tide and there were loads of people looking for crustaceans in the estuary mud or for shrimps with small nets.
Jean-François K — Google review
Beautiful. Nice beach
Eva U — Google review
This was an interesting visit to see this unique island. The history is fascinating with the attempts to make this a fort then a church. Nature had other ideas so just ruins exist today. This is definitely a worthwhile visit as the nearby homes still exist.

Tower San Sandurniño in Cambados is an ancient fortification built between the 8th and 9th centuries for defensive purposes and as a lighthouse.Located on an islet, it was used to warn of Viking invasion and other threats and to guide ship to the port. The Tower was damaged during the Irmandina revolut and an earthquake in 1755,and today only ruins remain, but it remains an important symbol of the city Cambados

Fefiñáns Palace, a Baroque-style mansion dating back to the 16th century, is a must-visit in Cambados. Originally built by Don Juan Sarmiento Valladares, advisor to King Felipe II, the palace boasts splendid interiors and beautiful gardens. Attached to the palace is Bodegas del Palacio de Fefiñáns, one of the oldest wineries in Galicia known for its Albariño wine.
Did the self guided audio tour, easy to use very, very informative! Good gift shop with good prices and variety. The whole thing was well organised and very interesting
Teddy M — Google review
A nice area to wander around & have a drink or a meal - we didn’t go in, not sure if you can. Lots of lovely shaded areas with places selling the local wines & cheeses. Car free & very peaceful on a Tuesday lunchtime.
Dorothy M — Google review
We went for the self guided tour of the palace and gardens. The guide comes online and there are numbers for each part. As there was a tour going on we started with the gardens and did the interiors later. We actually had to come back after lunch to complete the tour as we took so long exploring the gardens but the staff were very friendly and helpful. It is worth taking the time in the vineyard to go and see the fountain and tower at the far end of the vineyard. We actually went up the tower although I am not sure that you are supposed to and it was full of cobwebs as well as a little overgrown. The views are worth it. It is a bit confined and steep as all medieval stairs. The gardens are accessed by a beautiful bridge and there are also more vines. The forest is a place of tranquility before coming back to the distillery. The inside of the palace has done interesting features such as the painted wall paper and an 1800s board game. Then I would recommend trying some of the liqueurs. The orange and Albariño flavours are particularly good. The blue Marine flavour is very unusual with a touch of salt as well as floral tastes
Andrew D — Google review
Lovely house and gardens to visit. If you book the English audio tour it is self guided with numbers to press for each room. There is the opportunity to buy wine and liqueur at the end too.
Jo W — Google review
Beautiful palace, birth place of Albariño. Pedestrianised streets to walk in the old town
Maciej G — Google review
My wife and I spent an enjoyable 45 minutes wandering through the palace plus it's vineyard and orchard. The self-paced tour uses an app. Numbered signs along the way tell you which recording to listen to. It works. I didn't find the history of the families associated with the palace very interesting and was disappointed that the grounds weren't better maintained.
Rod T — Google review
We had an excellent tour and tasting of this palace converted to a city winery. Grapes are grown and used from the gardens. There is limited cask and vats on site as well. The tastings are done in one of the cask storerooms. It is a unique experience. The wines are all whites, including a very special limited edition sold only in magnum bottles. The tour was in Spanish and fortunately translated by our teacher who was leading the tour. Be sure to make a booking for a tour. Very limited WC facilities.
Rhicke J — Google review
Lovely self guided tour of the palace, didn't see much of the palace, a lot of info was for the garden and forest

Festa do Albariño is a popular event that takes place in a state-owned hotel, accessible via Rua Principe. The festival features dozens of stands set up by the best wineries in the area, offering their Albariño wines at affordable prices. Visitors can enjoy attractions, concerts, and orchestras throughout the week-long celebration. Nice experience on Friday. Busy but not over packed.
Ariadne N — Google review
(Translated by Google) This party is celebrated in Cambados, considered the capital of Albariño, for being part of the history and culture of this town. In recent decades, Cambados has become one of the main drivers of the area's economy, thanks to the development of wine tourism and the Albariño Festival itself. You can stay at the Parador de Turismo do Alvariño, built on the remains of Pazo Bazán, founded in the 17th century by one of the ancestors of Emilia Pardo Bazán, visit the Wine Museum, located next to the emblematic Ruínas de Santa Mariña Dozo, or take routes by the cellars Albariño is named after a type of vine grape that, according to tradition, was brought by the monks of Cluny in the twelfth century. In fact, these strains are indigenous and exclusive to Galicia and are mainly found in the Salnés valley, although they are also grown in other areas. Albariño white is grown by hand in small wineries, so there is a wide variety of flavors depending on the parishes and farmers who produce it: estimated at around 4,200 hectares, it is spread over more than 22,500 parcels. In general, it is a transparent and golden wine, of about 12.5 degrees that does not lead. In the Rías Baixas, there is an ancient winemaking tradition, which has been passed down from generation to generation, considered by experts, Alvariño, as one of the best white wines in Europe. In 1988, the Rías Baixas Denomination of Origin Regulatory Council was established, which covers five areas: Val do Salnés, O Rosal, Ribeira do Ulla, Condado do Tea and Soutomaior.

(Translated by Google) 🥳 Great party that takes place throughout the city but the nerve center is on this street. 🥲 A lot of people get together but the truth is that the atmosphere is very good and there is quite a good vibe. It is worth getting some wine with its "strung" glass. (Translated by Google) One of the best parties in Galicia. The truth is that Cambados fills up with people and you can have a super nice party with good weather. I recommend going the first few days since the weekend gets crowded and it becomes uncomfortable to be with so many people around. It can be a bit complicated to park but Cambados is big and there is always a place, especially along the coast. (Original) De las mejores fiestas de Galicia. (Translated by Google) The party is back. People were looking forward to it and it was also needed. There are too many people, some more passable than others, but if you're in the mood you have a great time, if not, not so much. You go from booth to booth drinking a drink or bottle, as far as you go, if you know how to stop. Some taste and others devour. You have to go at least once, but always in moderation and always keeping the city clean and without disturbing others.

We called and made a reservation, showed up a couple minutes early, waited about 10 minutes to be seated. We were given menus and then ignored for 20 minutes. We ate four dishes from the menu and all were average. The best thing about the meal was the bread. The waitress asked if we wanted dessert. In five years in Spain this was the first restaurant I did not feel welcome in. I would not recommend this restaurant because of the food and the service.
Karen K — Google review
Very much a place for locals. Not much competition. Absolutely overpriced given the fact that the food they serve is very mediocre. Surprising because the area is famous for its sea-food. Four of us were served food which was extremely bland and lacked any character. Service was somewhat indifferent. Irritating that they served us bread without asking and charged later for it. Waste of time and money.

Traditional food, perfektly cooked. Very fresh seafood and a solide house wine (Albariño).

The fact that it's a local place owned and run by local people does not excuse the rude service, the excess of oil and the lack of attention whenever they know you are not coming back tomorrow! Terrible! Don't make the effort to come here in August!

Worth venturing to this real gem of a seafood restaurant in the heart of the fisherman's village. Local vibe. Scallops were outstanding. We were looked after very well by the genuine and friendly owner. Excellent produce and good value for money. Highly recommended.

Located near Taberna do Trasno, between plaza das Rodas and rua Principe, Vago Viños is a top spot in Cambados known for its grilled dishes. The restaurant maintains the essence of an old tavern with a modern decor and atmosphere. Their diverse menu offers urban-inspired dishes. Visitors praise the Angus steak and recommend trying the vegetable wok as an appetizer. The restaurant also offers a good wine selection.
Incredible place with perfect food and curated wine selection. Must visit in Galicia.

Without doubt the best restaurant in Cambados, in a very pretty square (albeit a very busy one), with a warm welcome and service, an impressive wine list and an exceptional entrecot de vaca vieja!

Heuvos really good and the Angus steak excellent. Vegetable wok as a entradada was good. Experience a bit spoiled by children in a large party of diners, but it was Friday evening and we had not booked. Good wine selection

Decent food and friendly service. But for sure not 4.6 unfortunately. At 3 pm half the menu was not available anymore. Plates where dirty. And the waiter while friendly didn't know well their menu, availability and the wines they were serving. The wines where 'ok' but nothing more. The food was good, pulpo a little chewy but otherwise great. A decent place, somewhere between traditional Spanish restaurant and gastro bar.

Nestled in the heart of Cambados, Restaurante Divinas Palabras offers a delightful culinary experience for those looking to savor local flavors. This charming eatery specializes in a variety of dishes, including their standout beef burger and an enticing daily menu that features traditional Spanish fare like empanadas and grilled prawns. While the seafood platter may not impress everyone, many patrons rave about the generous portions and quality of food.
Friendly welcoming staff good wine

There have been some negative reviews and I don't think that they understand the issues. Cambados is a tourist "trap". It is the home of the Albariño wine and it is a town that lives from tourism and charges tourist prices for everything. Divinas Palabras is one of the restaurants owned by the same proprietor on the corner close to the central plaza. We had the menu del dia which is usually the cheapest way to eat in Spain. Here is was €18.50 which is on the expensive side but this is a tourist area. Usually this will also include wine or water but in this case it didn't and drinks were extra. My wife had the langostinos and I had the ensalada de salmon, these were both pretty good. Not exceptional but not bad. I then had the octopus and my wife had the sea bass. My octopus was Galician style with a lot of paprika but this was surprisingly mild flavoured paprika. The octopus was also good but not great. The sea bass was good. I had tarta de Santiago for pudding and my wife substituted dessert for a coffee. The tarta was very good and moist. All in all no problems. Given that other menus del dia in the same street were over €30 or even €50 you get what you pay for. Those were all based around expensive shellfish as that is the specialty of the area but again this is tourist targeting in the pricing. If you get the lasagna or burger in a fish region you are going to get something that feels like it came from the supermarket because to keep the menu prices low it probably did. If you stick to what the locals do well it is hard for them to go wrong and you will get something much better. If not you will have to pay the higher prices.

¡Caution! Guests from abroad are being ripped off! At first we only wanted to have a wine in the restaurant DIVINAS PALABRAS. After we saw that other guests were having dinner here, we asked for the menu. We quickly decided to order "Arroz con Bogavante" (rice with lobster), which was explicitly listed on the menu at €51. When we later received the bill, we were very surprised that the meal was charged at 56,-€. When we objected, we were told that we had received an outdated menu! When we did not want to accept this, a man (manager?) pointed to a price list of another(!) restaurant (EI EXPRESS). ¡HELLO! We were in the restaurant DIVINAS PALABRAS and NOT in EI EXPRESS! The man unfortunately remained stubborn and would not accommodate us. That is a BAD SERVICE! Because of this experience we can ¡NOT RECOMMEND this DIVINAS PALABRAS in Cambados!

(Translated by Google) I was there in July of this year, and the service was terrible and completely unsympathetic. I stopped ordering a second drink so as not to upset the staff (they seemed unenthusiastic). The food wasn't tasty, and you end up leaving with the feeling that you've been spoiled. The worst part is that this year I've observed this pattern of behavior toward tourists throughout my entire stay in the Rías Baixas. I've been going here more or less frequently since I was a child, but I won't be back.

Although it isn't a viewpoint with extensive infrastructure, its strategic location makes it an ideal spot to appreciate the beauty of the region. From here, the view extends over the traditional houses of Cambados, the rooftops, and the liveliness of the port. On clear days, you can make out the bateas (mussel farming platforms) dotting the estuary, and beyond, the islands that guard the Galician coast. The presence of the A Pastora hermitage at the top adds a special charm to the place, inviting tranquility and contemplation. It's a perfect spot for capturing spectacular photographs, especially at sunset, when the colors of the sky blend with the blue of the estuary. Recommendations for your Visit: * Combine with the Ruins of Santa Mariña Dozo: The viewpoint is located very close to the historic ruins of Santa Mariña Dozo. It's an excellent idea to visit both spots for a complete cultural and scenic experience. * Visit at Sunset: If possible, visit the viewpoint at the end of the day. The sunset over the estuary is a breathtaking sight. * Parking: Access is easy, and there is usually parking nearby, making the visit easier. * Walk Start/End Point: Consider this viewpoint a good place to begin or end a walk through the historic center of Cambados, as it offers a general perspective of the area. We really liked how well-kept it is, clean, the room and the spacious bathroom, the comfortable bed with one pillow and one cushion per person. It is a Baroque building from the 18th century and was the plot of land of the Marquises of Montesacro. Nowadays it still functions as a residence for the elderly, at the express wish of its owners, who donated it for that purpose. It is accessed by a solemn staircase, located on both sides of the architectural ensemble of which the building is a part. On the main facade, the large windows and balconies stand out, the three on the upper floor joined by a small wrought iron terrace, as well as the family crest of the Zárate and Murga family, emblazoned with the Cross of Santiago with an elegant crown from which emerges an arm wielding a sword. On both sides of the shield you can see spikes located on the roof of the building. Popped in here today for a quick look around . Interesting wine merchant set in a lovely old majestic building . The staff were very busy and I couldn’t get chatting to them , but there was plenty of wine for sale with what looked like a production process close by or maybe disused and they make it else where ? They have it laid out in such a way you can browse through the old buildings and see old machines etc , definitely should be on you to visit list

An amazing winery with some incredible Albarinos. Highly recommend visiting and it's easy to book online. Fatima was our guide and she was outstanding.

We absolutely loved the winery tour inside of a palace! We brought our three young kids and even they enjoyed their time during the tour. Our guide was extremely informative about the history of the winery as well as the winemaking process. This is a must visit winery in the Rias Baixas region!!!

Very nice tour of the bodega and garden, good elaborate expalanations (in Spanish though!) and tasted 3 wines which were all very nice. Very surprised by the 1583 wine

Historical landmark
San Tomé do Mar is a hidden gem that offers a unique glimpse into the local culture, particularly through the fascinating sight of shellfish harvesters at work. While it may not be the ideal spot for those seeking a tranquil beach experience—especially when high tide covers much of the shore—it compensates with its enchanting atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy swimming during high tide and marvel at the ruins of an ancient tower on a nearby island.

Bodegas Martín Códax is a renowned winery located in the Salnes valley, in the charming town of Cambados, known as the Albariño capital. Established in 1986 and named after a famous Galician troubadour, this winery offers guided tours that provide detailed insights into the winemaking process.
Top visit, amazing bodega, fantastic tour! One of the best experiences of our trip to Galicia! We prebooked a month in advance, certainly recommended when in the area.
Georgia K — Google review
A delightful visit! We highly recommend the tour and tasting. Our very knowledgeable guide provided (in excellent English) a detailed history of the winery, how the grapes are grown, and the wine is made. During the tasting of 3 different wines, we learned how to carefully taste the wines and about the different smells and flavors we experienced. We stayed after the tour to sample two more wines before purchasing several bottles in the Martin Codax store. The winery has a great view of the ria.

Incredible experience! I can’t remember the sommelier’s name but he was funny and I found the tour to be incredibly educational. The pairing was fantastic (specifically the mussels were out of this world!!!) I was familiar already with their great wines . Extremely enjoyable and recommended experience! Thank you!

We really appreciated our visit of the winery. The visit is really worth it. The staff was very welcoming and gave us plenty of information of the wine making process. The view from the winery is beautiful. They produce high quality wines.

Another important producer of the region. The 100% Albariño wines we encountered for the first time with the 2019 harvest surprised us in a positive way. We decided to visit the producer we have been drinking for years, in their place, in the @riasbaixas region in Northern Spain. During this visit, where we tasted 3 different Albariños, we also witnessed a good-quality facility. As for the story of the name; Martin Codax, a Galician poet who once lived in this region, and of course, they have brought the story together with his verses. Now, let's come to the wines we liked the most during this visit: Lias 2021 and Arousa are our recommendations. Additional Information: The employee responsible for the tasting does it at a "simple" level😅, especially considering beginner level visitors. It may be useful to go as a group for a higher-level tasting conversation.
Kaim B — Google review
Joined the guided tour with good explanation about the wine from Galicia (e.g Albariño) No public transportation to the place so the best way would be taking a taxi from the city close by. (E.g Cambados). We took taxi and costs around €15-18. Tried few different wines with the local cheese, very informative. Would be great if the visit of the fields can also be included to see the growth of the grapes.

The lady that did the guide was very knowledgeable and clarified our questions patiently. We first saw the vineyard itself then the bodega. Adegas Albamar, a winery recommended by a local Michelin restaurant, is known for its generosity in providing vineyard tours and tastings of their superb wines. The owner, Xurxo, showcases his mastery of the winemaking process through terroir selection, organic viticulture, and the use of natural yeast and minimal sulphur. This small winery exudes soul and offers stunning wines that reflect its seaside location.
Excellent professional visit thanks to Xurxo and our host Adrian Tomás. I love the bar and winery next to other acting as a focal point for the local community. The wines we tried were excellent. Complex, expressive, aromatic & all made with a lot of tender loving care. Well worth trying and buying. They're reds are going places too.

Very passionate small producer with great attention to the vineyard work. I really enjoyed the tour and the explanation about the land and context. Everyone was very kind and welcoming. The wine tasting felt like it would never end, ahah! Ceibo is an excellent Godello from Valdeorras. Among the Albariños, Finca O Pereiro impressed me with its bright acidity and Alma de Mar with its lovely texture. A wonderful experience, highly recommended!

The grapes are overloaded with high concentrations of chemical pesticides. In addition to the extra preservatives they put in the winery at the end of the production process. After so many years of growing Albariño plantations, all the chemical pesticides throughout the year are naturally released by the winter rains into the Galician rivers, which eventually flow into the sea. It is located in one of the most emblematic sites in Cambados, adjacent to the ruins of the Santa Maria Dozo cemetery, which was declared a Cultural Interest Asset (BIC) by the Association of Single Cemeteries in Europe (ASCE). The museum is located in the former church rectory. It consists of two buildings: an old rectory and a new building, connected by a glass walkway. Albariño wine is essential to the town of Cambados, which is how it is displayed in the different rooms of the museum. In the garden we can see the sculptural group "Loureiro" by Manolo Paz, consisting of a huge granite wine glass next to the Lagar. In addition, the museum has a shop, information services and arranges guided tours. Visiting its six exhibition rooms you will learn about the history of Albariño, the surrounding wine culture, the agricultural tools used or the traditions that have survived or changed over time to adapt to new needs.
