Fort Kijkduin, a Napoleonic fort built in the early 19th century, stands as a historical landmark in Den Helder. The fort offers breathtaking views of the North Sea and houses an intriguing museum that delves into its military history. Visitors can explore original bunkers and learn about wartime experiences, including Napoleon's battles and the German occupation. Additionally, the fortress features an underground aquarium showcasing local marine life and even boasts a restored skeleton of an 11-meter sperm whale.
Located right on the dunes on the coastline, Fort Kijkduin helps display the great historical importance of the town of Den helder and the history of both sea and land battles spanning hundreds of years. Informative displays including some great interactive activities for young children are assisted with audio guides and written information in both Dutch and English. Not limited to war history, Fort Kijkduin also offers insights into local fauna and flora growth including a large aquarium where you can get up close with a great number of creatures, even feeding some of them. I would highly recommend this as a place to visit.
Kenny W — Google review
Enjoyed a great visit to the Fort. Spent almost 2 hours here, though you can do it faster. Most signs are in Dutch and English and audio tour as well is a nice addition, which is included in the price. If you have kids quite a lot for them including the aquarium. Highly recommend a visit!
Claire D — Google review
For €11, we got a ticket to the museum, aquarium and audio guide (English / Dutch). We spent perhaps 1.5 hours in the museum walking around and listening to all of the audio recordings, then about 45min in the aquarium. The fort is very interesting and has a lot to offer to those interested to know its history. And why Den Helder was an important part of the Netherlands’ history.
Irina O — Google review
Great museum, both the fortress and the aquarium. Interesting and entertaining! Recommend.
Lorenzo M — Google review
This place is extremely informative about its history, not only the fort, but the area around. There is a small car park directly in front of the entrance. After entering and paying, there is a seating area/Café and souvenir shop. The actual museum begins one level lower, access via spiral staircase or using the lift provided. You need to make sure you have enough time to see and read all exhibits. There is a lot to see and take in. You can buy a combi ticket that includes the Atlantikwall museum virtually next door. It not only saves you money, its valid for 7 days, so no need to rush through your visit. Toilet facilities are in entrance lobby and in the lower area, behind the stairs. I can strongly recommend the museum, if you want to learn about the history; especially from the video interviews from people who lived there during WWII.
Recce 1 — Google review
Fort Kijkduin is at a strategically important location and has quite some history. The museum offers lots of opportunities to get an impression of the war history around that place. You can walk in original bunkers, sit on anti air cannons, watch Napoleons battles or read about German occupation times. The aquarium which is also part of the museum shows local fish and you can even feed sharks there. There is a quiz available to keep the kids busy which worked very well. Highly recommended.
Dr. K — Google review
I really enjoyed my visit to the fort and the aquarium. The location is gorgeous and parking is free. I thought the displays in the fort were interesing, but I really loved the aquarium and all the information about the local fauna. Really interesting to see local fish and other sea life up close and personal, especially the rays. It was a great day out and I will definitely visit again.
Alexandra B — Google review
Fort Kijkduin is a great museum which shows its importance of defence in the past. It tells you Dutch history. This is one great museum which one should never miss. Though it is in the west of Den Helder, it will take 30 min. to walk from train station Den Helder. I advise you to walk here because you can enjoy watching horses, sheep and lighthouse on the way. You can also come by bus 851 which will leave train station once per hour. The museum has weapons, military stuff, military model tanks and planes, documentary film, aquarium, etc to show you. The sole toilet is right in front of the cashier. After you buy the entry ticket, turn your head back and you will see it. All the other toilets in the museum are locked.

The Navy Museum, located in Den Helder, Netherlands, offers a fascinating insight into the history of the Royal Netherlands Navy. Visitors can explore real and model vessels, as well as view uniforms from different eras. One of the highlights is the opportunity to tour the Tonijn submarine and learn about life on board. The museum is situated on the Oude Rijkswerf, also known as Willemsoord, which adds to its historical charm.
Very nice model ships and a lot to read and the real submarine is stunning! Better check in early, there is so much to see. Very friendly personal, too!
S. — Google review
A fantastic place for all navy enthusiasts. The submarine is incredibly impressive and in excellent condition. Even the Persescope is functional🙂There are two other ships and lots of other navy-related items. There are also plenty of interactive activities, so it's also a good place for children. The tour takes about 2-3 hours. Getting to the museum is easy. There's parking, restrooms, and you can get coffee or tea on one of the ships. There is also a souvenir shop there and the museum staff is very nice. The ticket price is very good considering the time you spend there and what you see. It's a great place🙂

The Maritime Naval Museum was an amazing experience! It’s incredibly big and definitely one of the largest museums I’ve ever visited. Including a lunch break, it took us roughly six hours to get through all the displays. Luckily, we went on a day that wasn’t very busy, which made the visit even more enjoyable. The museum offers a rich history with so much to see and understand. It’s without a doubt one of the nicest museum experiences I’ve had. The only downside is that if you’re an English speaker, you may struggle with some of the content since the majority of the information is in Dutch. Here and there, you’ll find English displays or audio with English text, but overall it’s predominantly Dutch. My tip: bring your phone and use Google Translate to get the most out of the experience. Overall, highly recommended!

It's such a diverse and interesting museum that you could easily spend an entire day there. It's definitely worth a repeat visit. Submarine Tonijn (Tuna in English) gives a grand start and everything else is also excellent.

An excellent musuem, staff very helpful and friendly. Lot’s to learn about the history and very well presented. The visit to the ships and submarines was brilliant

The highlights of this interesting museum are the 2 ships and 1 submarine you can visit. The exhibitions are informative. You need ~3 hours to see everything.

Nestled at the very edge of North Holland, 't Veerhuis Lands End offers a breathtaking vantage point overlooking the bustling harbors of Den Helder, the Marsdiep strait, and the picturesque island of Texel. This charming spot features a delightful restaurant and an inviting terrace where visitors can savor everything from a comforting cup of coffee to an elaborate dinner while soaking in stunning views of both the North Sea and Wadden Sea.
Excellent service and food! Vegan curry, burger and chips were top quality and the little extra of asparagus was much more worth than a price. We were offered a bottle of tap water to sit down and out dietary restrictions were carefully taken into account. Will definitely come back.

Came here to celebrate an occasion with my elderly father who has been coming here since its early days. Friendly customer service, a modern and comfortable interior setting that offers many different seating areas with views as required. Overall, a great experience.

I wanted to come here just for a coffee to see the view. Luckily my sister and husband were staying here so great excuse! Lovely view and friendly staff, a really nice place to watch the ferry come and go. I didn't eat there but my family did and they said the food was great.

Very good experience at this restaurant! We were four and ordered different dishes. All of them were delicious and beautifully presented. The tomato soup was out of this world! Saved us from the cold windy evening.
Qiao W — Google review
A nice place to sit and have a drink or a meal with a great view. A great view of the ferries to Texel Island while we dine. The food is good with some nice choices. Its busy most days so making a reservation helps.
Vibin V — Google review
The view is really nice but that was about it. Floor and table were dirty, menu sticky. The melon lemonade tasted rather artificial. Chicken was very dry, drecched with a heavy peanut sauce. Fries were OK but with many black spots that should have been sorted out beforehand. Service was rather slow, focussed more on the outdoor guests with drinks.

This was a well organised but quick stop in the Port of Den Helder as we commenced our northern lights tour. It is quite a fascinating place with lots of interesting things for all ages. It offers virtual reality, lots of history of lifeboats and rescues, and a great experience in the wind turbine. There are other things to do such as trying the navigation games. All in all it is a very interesting, informative and enjoyable place to visit .
Ross D — Google review
Interesting museum about work of rescue workers, their lifes and stories. Interactive well made exhibition with videos, things from rescuers, their medals, boats and equipment used. Really cool. I missed there were not some medals showed and some equipment should have English description but good in general. They also offer boat trips and you can enter signal ship. Friendly staff.

Great museum about the rescue efforts in the seas around Den Helder. Audio tours available in multiple languages and for adults or kids. Many boats on display and some to enter and pretend to sail, lots of interactive exhibits including a wind tunnel. Recommended

Wonderful museum with very lovely staff. We’ve been there on a Rainey day and our kids totally loved it - especially the chance to sit and walk on the boats

I actually wanted to give ZERO stars... Discriminatory reception refused a five person group aged 32 to 38 to enter the camp site ALTHOUGH we have booked and paid our two nights stay three weeks up front via the official registration form on their website! The only two arguments were: 1) we are teenaged 2) we are a group of five person ... what the f*#k??? We then had to cancel our trip because of non-availibility of free camp spots close by.

Quite a historical city been here for the very first time but wish to go back over and over . For those with love for historical facts , there is a marine museum as well and you can look at a number of things. I had never seen a submarine or torpedoes but got an opportunity to have a glance at them

Fort Erfprins, constructed in 1811, is the largest stronghold in the Netherlands, spanning 49 hectares. Presently functional as a training facility for the Royal Netherlands Navy, it can solely be accessed through prior arrangements. Situated by the sea, this age-old fort offers splendid panoramas and holds significant historical value. Lighthouses
Lange Jaap Lighthouse, an iconic destination, stands as one of the tallest traditional lighthouses worldwide. Regrettably, it is presently inaccessible for safety reasons; however, its beauty can still be admired from a distance or by getting closer. This place is perfect for family outings during leisure days, with the added bonus of nearby seaside and horse range exploration. Spending an hour or two in this picturesque location offers both aesthetic pleasure and a healthy pastime.
The Laang Jaap or "Tall Jake" is one of the tallest traditional lighthouses in the world and thankfully is still standing. Sadly due to safety concerns, it is not accessible closer than 50 metres or so which means we have to observe and respect this icon of Den Helder from a distance.

One spectacular place. Light house anf fort on one side and sea on the other.

It's more beautiful from a distance than up close. Unfortunately, it was during the day, it's better to come in the evening. Fits beautifully into the landscape

Iconic place. It is an active lighthouse and considered one of the tallest traditional lighthouses of the world. Currently inaccessible inside for visitation because of safety reasons, but you can still see it from afar (or get closer).

A wonderful place to be! Such a serene place. And Lange Jaap, of course. One of the prettiest in my lighthouses collection :)

Definitely a place to bring the family to on off-days. Also considering you check out the seaside and horse range. It's all-around pretty and a healthy way to spend an hour or two.

Just a pity currently that it is having some repairs, but always worth a visit!

Winkelcentrum Kroonpassage in Den Helder offers a delightful indoor shopping experience with its 20 stores under one roof, providing a wide range of products. The area is bustling and lively, offering diverse retail and dining options. While parking is available for up to three hours, some parts of the shopping space are closed or available for rent. Visitors can also enjoy the nearby Marine Museum and a fully-roofed ice area.
A few days ago, I walk close to there, visitors were around 80 percent of them looking to us, we were in different motion of clothes traditional of Eid ul-Fitr mubarak.

Very small shopping center that closes early. Not many shops, and some of them are not operating. It can potentially improve a lot with a better management.

A spacious street adorned with a plethora of shopping opportunities on either side, creating a vibrant atmosphere enriched with diverse shopping and dining choices. The availability of parking adds convenience, although it's worth noting that there is a time limit on parking. Overall, a lively and bustling location for those seeking a variety of retail and culinary experiences.

Completely dead, probably used to be great but now it's just a hallway with barely any shops. Might as well not go in, there's nothing there anymore.

Great location in city center near public transport (bus and train). The mall is not too large, and unfortunately, most of the interior shops have disappeared, leaving many empty windows. It is clean and tidy.

Beach Pavillion Storm aan zee is a unique restaurant located on the Helderse dike, offering stunning views of the sea, De Razende Bol, Texel, and the Helderse dunes. Guests can enjoy a delightful dining experience with a beautiful terrace overlooking the picturesque surroundings. The menu features a variety of bites, sandwiches, and main courses along with tasty local beers and good house wines.
Very friendly staff, excellent views of the sea, good food. We went there on the 25th of December with very little notice and we had a wonderful lunch. Highly recommend.
AlexMD M — Google review
The restaurant was ok, in my opinion it was trying to look expensive / fancy while it wasn't. The food was nice, and the hot chocolate was brought to our table quite fast and tasted good. I think the service could of been a bit faster but they were nice enough. I really think they should of stuck to the basics with the presentation of things to be honest, instead of a simple white plate the food was brought on either a wooden plank or a plastic plate with some or other design that was supposed to make it look like wood, which made the plates seem very cheap. Overall I would recommend this place to eat at, but they should really get rid of all the plastic stuff.
ArchKeyboard 7 — Google review
A total disappointment… but with a great view My partner and I went to this place really excited to try it, but unfortunately, the experience was quite disappointing from the start. We had to wait 1 hour and 45 minutes for the food to arrive. In fact, we were about to leave the parking lot when my partner asked why it was taking so long—and just then, the food finally came out. We ordered loaded fries, crispy chicken, sweet and spicy ribs, and pesto bread. Sadly, none of it was fresh. Everything tasted old, like it had been reheated several times. The only thing that was somewhat decent was the crispy chicken. Then we ordered avocado sushi, gyozas, enchiladas, and a burger. The sushi was nothing special—just rice with a tiny bit of avocado inside. The gyozas didn’t taste good, the burger was raw in the middle, and the enchiladas were greasy. The plating didn’t help either. It looked like the chef had given up—cheap supermarket chips and a few random veggies thrown on the plate to add some “green.” The only redeeming quality was the amazing view, which truly is beautiful. But honestly, it’s not worth the long wait or the poor food quality.
Brandi O — Google review
Very nice and cozy place to grab a bite and have a drink. Amazing view. Friendly service. Plenty of bites and sandwiches but there are some nice choices for main course as well. Tasty local beers on tap and good house wines. We had toasts with fries and were very happy with both. Prices are more than ok.

Had a lovely cheesecake and a cappuccino on the terrace. Unfortunately, at this time of year, there is no waiting service outside, so I had to order inside and take it out myself. Not really a big deal, but no full marks 😉 there's a lovely view of the sea, dike and dunescape from this place. The cheesecake is pleasantly unsweetened, which I appreciate a lot 😋

This clean and family-friendly campsite offers various amenities such as an indoor pool, spacious kitchen facilities, and numerous play areas for children. We had a tent pitching area with a friend of ours...it was beautiful. It is worth every penny, very dog friendly...you can take your pup almost everywhere....the beach was a little further down the road where there is a car park and you have to walk a little hill and then you are at the beach....super clean everywhere including the beach

Past 5 years we were frequent guests and always delighted of t'Noorder Sandt's professional standards but this year we were shocked of the huge amount of fouling dogs. Among others we watched someone letting her dog wee in front of a tent's entrance just opposite her own camping spot. Disgusting!!! Dogs can't be blamed but selfish and careless dog Owners.

Nice camping, big quite and with good facilities, unfortunately the service is not so good. So much advertised WI-FI works as in 1995 you can't do anything, a bit disappointing for the price and the stars and compared with other camping Not very clean: the chemical WC was always dirty and the disinfectant (required by corona rules) was empty. it was not even cleaned on saturday morning. It is not clear where to put waste no good signage and missing plastic waste bin. Reception is missing, when we arrived reception was closed and was very long to get in contact with someone to do check-in. Overall a good facility but the service is lacking

This is a very nice, clean camp site. We spent a week here in 2015 and enjoyed it a lot. It can get a little noisy in the evening but that is part and parcel of being on a largish campsite. The washing facilities are amazingly clean thanks to the little South American cleaning lady (no names mentioned here) and her husband who not only ensure the highest level of cleanliness possible, but do so with a smile. We had wifi in the caravan and were even able to enjoy Californication on Netflix. Great site - worth a visit! Go there.

Went with family for a couple of days, but had to move to another camping. Owner started screaming one of our kids was too noisy. We weren't even there when supposed noise should have happened, however it was impossible to reason with other. Most bizarre thing was that she confided with us that she always find Germans annoying and that it was good that we left. This while we aren't even German 😑

Project Nollen is a captivating nature reserve that beautifully intertwines art and the natural landscape of beaches and dunes. During my recent visit, I stumbled upon this hidden gem while searching for activities before a wedding in Den Helder. The guided tour, primarily in Dutch, offered insights into the impressive works of an artist whose style resonates with Richard Serra's organic yet imposing sculptures.
I just happened to chance upon this place while googling about how to spend an afternoon before attending a wedding in Den Helder. I’m so glad I came across this absolute gem. I took a guided tour which was predominantly in Dutch so it’s probably worth reading up about this lesser known but impressive artist sculptor designer and gardener who emanates much of Richard Serra’s style The works are imposing and yet organic. The location is amongst dunes by the Den Helder Zuid station and the conservatory cafe is just worth visiting on its own merit

With a tour - is only possibility to get inside BUT they have no tour in English ! And it is so pity. Do not go to this “ in the middle of nowhere” if you are not native! Not recommend! P.S. we asked to translate couple of time but our favor was denied! The tour guide didn’t even wanted to translate the name of statues to English ! Only phrase we heard from her : “ do not touch this”. Very rude ! If you don’t want to do like audio guide or etc, do at lest small plates in both languages- Dutch and English (like all the museums do!)

Roompot Strandhuisjes Julianadorp offers a laid-back beachfront experience with cozy cottages featuring wood decks, loft bedrooms, and kitchens. Guests can enjoy access to a pool and wake up to the soothing sound of waves, build sandcastles, and take in the stunning views. The location is highly praised for its dreamy setting, with friendly staff offering excellent service.
The beach house was great, cosy but with enough space for 4 persons. It is just lovely to be directly on the beach and to hear the sea day and night. Since it is in the north it was less crowdy during our stay (May) compared to other places we have been. We had a great time here and will certainly come back for another stay.

So, ok, it should have been a 5 star review, but when you have got 1 week of extreme bad wheather during your summer holiday and you are stuck with 4 kids in a cabin on the beach and you are paying a lot of money, then there is just 1 conclusion for us, never again. Just a wake up call for any family, the wheather makes or breakes this experience.
Sjoerd B — Google review
Prices don't reflect the value of the beach house. 2500 euro's a week in the summer, still 900 euro's in the autumn, not during a holiday. These things contribute to the perceived lack of value and quality: - Rain can come in through the top of the doors. This is a known problem but appearantly not something that is fixed. You can get some towels and that's it. - No dishwasher. I don't mind doing dishes but for something that costs 2500 euro's a week in the summer... - Not much decoration, not a cozy place - When we arrived, looking from the inside through the windows, outside looked like a blur. My holiday started with cleaning the windows. Again, it's a beach house that costs 2500 euro's in the summer :/ - The upstairs beds are really only accessible for not too old people without physical problems. - During this month the beach house easily get's 30 degrees celsius in the sun within a couple of hours when you're gone doing something and the doors are closed. Let alone what the temperature in the summer would be. - The door of the kitchen came loose - Only a microwave, not a combination with an oven - No doormat....in a beach house. - When you pay this much money it's a bit unreal when only 1 piece of luggage per person is transfered to the beach house. It's just so insanely expensive for what you get. I really expected decent maintainenance and a bit more luxury and quality. The spot however was wonderful. We had a wonderful short autumn holiday. The personel on the floor was helpful.

Located in Huisduinen, the Atlantikwall Centrum is housed in the former administration building of the German Navy. This museum offers a unique insight into the war history of Den Helder and the Atlantic Wall. The exhibition features original exhibits, digital eyewitness reports, and detailed explanations of various bunker types along the Atlantic Wall. Visitors can explore the hidden cellar, although it is currently flooded. The museum aims to preserve this significant period in history while combining heritage with innovation.
Fascinating place: there's nothing remaining from the German officers mess building which houses the museum, other than the Third Reich style exterior walls. However, the exhibition inside is well worth paying to see: it tells the story of Den Helder in the second world war, with the experiences of the local population under German occupation taking centre stage. There is also a very informative display about the Atlantic Wall fortifications that were built by the Germans and which pepper the landscape along the coastline of this part of Holland.

(Translated by Google) The "kroontjes bunker" is a strange appearance among all the bunkers. A bunker of which part is clearly visible above ground, while most bunkers do not stand out in the landscape or are completely underground. From Fort Kijkduin, the bunker can be recognized in the distance and it looks as if it is wearing a crown. When you get closer, the "crown" appears to be formed by diagonally protruding concrete parts. There appears to be a whole complex of bunkers underground. Even parts of brick masonry arches are visible, from a probably older underground residence. Volunteers work hard to keep the bunker presentable and preserve its history for posterity. This unique bunker is opened on an irregular basis, such as the "Open Bunker Day" and "Open Monument Day" It is a pity that the bunker has been badly defaced with graffiti by the "youth".

We've visited many gardens and considering the location of this Garden in the center of the city Den Helder we got there without too much expectations. We couldn't have been more wrong! Very interesting and well kept Gardens. The greenhouses and Japanese garden in particular were highlights for us but there's something there for everyone to enjoy.. even poems!

I've been here twice now, and it's for-sure a really nice place! Even though it's a bit small, it's packed with so many interesting plants that you can easily spend hours looking at them all. The butterfly house is always fun, too. 🥰

One of the loveliest places in Den Helder! Quiet, green, and welcoming! Beside the large number of plant species, you can see butterflies, fish, turtles, birds, and probably many others. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. Worth more than a visit!

The room is nice & cosy , we arrive to check in it was a teenager boy called NUNO and the girl was very helpful & good manners but the boy was very rude & not helpful at all , its march so it cold the heating doesn’t not go above 13 c i think its controlled by the receptionist via wifi it was cold at night 3 c so we couldn’t not increase it . To check out the boy was even rude than the check in , really bad attitude or racist or maybe the owner son thats why he is acting badly & not helpful . Keep nuno away from the reception keep the smiling helpful girl Nuno not good for business.

During my recent exploration of Den Helder, I stumbled upon the enchanting "Project Nollen," a hidden treasure that left me utterly captivated. This remarkable site features an array of impressive sculptures that blend seamlessly with the natural landscape, creating a stunning visual experience. Although the guided tour was primarily in Dutch, it was well worth it to learn about the visionary artist behind these works, whose style resonates with Richard Serra's boldness.

Breathtaking place. All pieces of art played with colors, music, steam and fire. That place gave me plenty of associations and thoughts during and afterwards observing.

The Monument voor het Reddingswezen, also known as the National Monument to the Rescue Service, is a commemoration of all sea rescuers who risked their lives to save others. Constructed in 1934 and unveiled by Queen Juliana in 1935, it stands as a tribute to the noble and selfless efforts of these individuals. The monument features a remarkable carillon that produces incredible bell sounds, adding to its beauty and significance.
Very nice place and perfect bell tower.

(Translated by Google) The National Monument to the Rescue Service. This monument commemorates all rescuers at sea who tried to save the lives of drowning people, at the risk and stake of their own lives. An extremely noble thought and selfless effort. The memorial was built of brick in 1934. The monument was put into use on June 4, 1935 when it was unveiled of memorial stone of Prince Hendrik by Queen Juliana. Prince Hendrik was patron of the Rescue Service and the husband of Queen Wilhelmina. The monument and associated park were designed by architect Piet Kramer. The memorial needle is an example of the "Amsterdam School" movement, both culturally and architecturally. The structure is not done justice when people think of a menhir. The brick base and tower feature natural stone accents and sculpted elements. The bottom is made up of layers of multiple heights and sizes, which are supposed to represent waves. On top of this is a tapering 15 meter high tower. A large bronze crown has been placed on top of the tower. Under the crown, there is a recess in which a carillon is placed. The Carillon has 49 clocks (30 older and 19 modern clocks) plus a gaming table and a gaming machine.

(Translated by Google) The water tower in Den Helder is visible from afar and is in the immediate vicinity of the main train station there. It was one of the first water towers built in the Netherlands. It was built in the city in 1908. In 1959 its red bricks were covered with a layer of gray concrete. It should therefore be considered modern and visible. Fortunately, this was changed again in 2005. The cement layer was removed and the red bricks became visible again. So the tower was back in its original optical shape.

(Translated by Google) The water tower is an important landmark in Den Helder. In 1856, one of the first water towers in the Netherlands was built in Den Helder; cast iron and open. In 1908, this cast iron water tower was replaced by a closed brick tower. In the 1960s there was a building movement that everything had to be modern, sleek and made of concrete. The old water tower was provided with a shotcrete layer on the outside. A sleek concrete case that certainly did not look nice. In 2005, the water tower was neatly restored and almost returned to its original state. Fortunately, there are few high-rise buildings in the area, because with even more apartment buildings this water tower would be a mockery. Now a proud monument. A stark contrast to the nearby (horrid 1960s) station and the ugly colossus of a 1960s post office.
