The site boasts a collection of large research telescopes and offers tours, an exploratory center, visitor gallery, gift shop, and a cafe for visitors to enjoy. The observatory conducts diverse research activities such as exploring the cosmos for 'Dark Energy' and searching for planets within the Milky Way.
Spent a few days in Coonabarabran / Warrumbungle and visited this place 3 times. Highly recommend the day tours. Lunch / coffee was simple but great. The visitor Gallery was a trove of information as are the very friendly staff.

Great place to stop by on your way to Warrumbungles. Before you go up the observatory, visit the museum in the visitor centre to experience some interesting interactive exhibitions. Lots of telescopes and equipments in the observatory, would be good for someone interested in astronomy. There is also a viewing deck that provides a glimpse of the landscapes ahead.
Lerong L — Google review
What a great tour we were lucky enough to be there when they were doing tests and could see the telescope being orientated. You can’t appreciate how big it is and the view from outside at the top is just breathtaking. The tour guide did a brilliant job of explaining the importance of the telescope, how it works and all the fun facts on the universe was so fun and informative. The passion he brings to the tour makes it that much more enjoyable.
Mel C — Google review
Feel like I've had a once in a lifetime experience at the stargazing capitol of Australia. These amazing telescopes set amongst the warrumbungles is surreal and quite magical. Siding springs has an open day once a year where you can get a sausage sizzle, view a few of the amazing telescopes, go inside the planetarium, listen to talks, have ice cream and visit the museum. So interactive, great for kids and fascinating details about planets, our solar system, galaxies, the sun...it's great. You can see how much you'd weigh on mars, and see how heavy a litre of milk is on Saturn. Loved the whole day.
Kristy S — Google review
Went here on a road trip. A little out of the way but definitely worth visiting. There's an interpretive centre, lots of telescope including the big one. You can go inside and up to the fourth floor and observe the telescope. Excellent views of the surrounding landscape - particularly the Warrumbungle Ranges.
Paul H — Google review
We recently did the all day tour at Siding Spring Observatory with our two little boys, and it was one of the best tours we’ve ever done. Our guide Branioc was excellent. He was very entertaining, personable, and extremely knowledgeable about the observatory and its workings, as well as the wildlife and history of the area, and even made our coffee and lunch back at the cafe! The views of the Warrumbungles from the exterior catwalk are spectacular, and it was fantastic getting to see the telescopes, and learning more about the field of astronomy. The exploratory was also informative and very well presented. We highly recommend doing a tour - it was a highlight of our holidays. Thank you again to Branioc for making the tour such a wonderful thought-provoking experience!

Crystal Kingdom, located in Coonabarabran, Australia, is home to the impressive "Minerals and Fossils from the Warrumbungle Ranges" collection. It proudly showcases rare zeolite crystals and a vast crystal cave alongside local fossils. The Crystal Shop offers a wide array of gemstones including opals, sapphires, amber, topaz, garnet, and amethyst.
The new owner greet us as we walked in and we had a nice chat with her before we left. Crystal kingdom is a must to visit when you’re at Coonabarabran. Interesting collections with nice new setting with some dinosaurs that will attract children. Don’t forget to check the roses at the front garden, we were lucky by the time we were there, they were blooming. Very beautiful!
Peny S — Google review
I really enjoyed the Crystal Kingdom... With a lovely shop full of beautiful crystals and rocks..and the fantastic museum of rocks thru the ages, you'd be best to allocate an hour to view everything. The lovely ladies provided a walker free to use, and they also have a dog pram and wheelchair for free use. 🚻♿ 🚻🅿️ ♿entrance. Entry is free but please give a donation.

I had a wonderful time at Crystal Kingdom. The owner was friendly and invaluable. The museum's crystal room was terrific and mind-blowing. The artwork on the walls only enhanced the atmosphere. It is a must-see place indeed. You can buy a variety of different crystals for yourself or to gift to your loved ones.

Stopped here on part of a long road trip. Loved it. Friendly informative staff. Ny son loves rocks and crytals and this was perfect for him. Beautiful gift shop where we purchased a few bits on the way out. Even toys available for our youngest to play
Courtney W — Google review
I think this might be the best thing in the town! Highly reccomend if you're going through. Interesting geology display / museum out the back and a massive selection of crystals. I needed to get a particular number of quartz points for geopathic balancing work (about a month after visiting), rang about four closer places, and finally rang this place. Ang was extremely helpful, contacted her supplier to source them and I had them a few days later! Much appreciated. This place lifts the vibration of the town ☺️ - you can just tell. Cheers ladies, good to meet you.

Knowledgeable staff, and a varied and quality exhibit and shop. We are so glad we took the time to call in on our trip through NSW. 10/10
Cassandra P — Google review
This is an amazingly set out and informative centre. It has something for everyone: artistic depiction of changes over time; minerals; crystals, fossils; jewelry ( gorgeous earrings) and life size dinosaurs for the kids. A must to visit. It has only had three owners over 50 years and the current owners are well informed and lovely people. Ps I purchased some earrings of course. And remember a small donation is requested so take some cash with u, so worth supporting these museums and collections.

This is the best little shop along the Newell Highway: A unique display of crystals, jewelry, minerals and fossil specimens with many gift items. Very educational and friendly staff that make you feel welcome. Don't forget to stop by when in Coonabarabran, an absolute must!

Donna the Astronomer at Milroy Observatory is a local legend known for her passionate and informative stargazing experiences. Visitors have had fantastic evenings with Donna, who is described as inspiring and knowledgeable. She and her team provide informative tours of the night sky, squeezing in more features than seen in any other single event. Despite being talkative, Donna welcomes questions from attendees and ensures a fun, entertaining, and educational experience for all ages.
An Amazing Astronomy Experience! My family and I had a fantastic time on this tour! Donna was both informative and entertaining, making the experience engaging and enjoyable. As she put it, this is an astronomy experience, not just a lesson—which made it even more memorable. What Makes It Special Yes, you can see the stars and the Milky Way just by looking up in this area, but the observatory’s location on a sizeable hill provided an even better view of the horizon. The telescope allowed us to see fascinating stars and distant galaxies that we wouldn’t have noticed on our own. Donna’s explanations added so much depth to what we were seeing—we would have missed a lot without her insights. Is It Worth It? Absolutely! The tour flew by, and we left with a much greater appreciation of the night sky. If you’re on the fence about booking, go for it—you won’t regret it!
Morgan — Google review
It was brilliant and so informative. We were very lucky to have a clear night and only a couple days after a new moon so the night was magical, we saw shooting stars, the emu, the binary stars at Alpha Centauri, the birthing grounds of stars and the oldest ones in the galaxy. We loved it and could recommend it enough.
Mel C — Google review
We spent such a good time! Doona and her husband are fascinated and captivating. We had the time to discover, learn and see plenty of things about planets, stars and everything in link with the space. Time is going fast in their observatory !
Anatole L — Google review
Awesome experience! We got to use telescopes to see beautiful stars and Mars! The guides were extremely educated and clearly passionate about the night sky. You don’t actually get to use the observatory equipment, it is just the base for the session, but it was still a great experience. The night sky was so clear and there was no other light around polluting the area. Perfect! Side note, I left an item at our session and Donna was kind enough to post it back to me immediately! Thank you for everything!
Gemma — Google review
The breadth of knowledge of the cosmos flowing like the milky way from the mouth of a real astronomer. Donna is an absolute star of a host and her associate Chris was equally knowledgeable. The moon did play spoil sport blinding our vision blocking several stars, but the final zoom in on the terminator line of the moon was just magnificent. I will be back with a bigger group on a darker night. P.s. Pack warm clothing as the temperature drops rapidly.
Bargav R — Google review
This was a fantastic experience and a unique night out. Donna was very accomodating, knowledgeable and personable - this was a great education session! Absolutely incredible views through the telescopes - awe-inspiring. Highly recommend!
Lauren — Google review
We had weekend away from Sydney. A Friday night booking. We both loved it, guides were very informative and we had an extremely clear night. The largest amount of stars in the night sky that I have ever seen anywhere. Will be back again. Went to Siding Springs observatory tour next day (after morning trek in the Warrumbungles).

Warrumbungle Observatory in Coonabarabran offers a unique stargazing experience with up to 5 telescopes for observing planets, stars, comets, nebulae, and galaxies. Visitors start with an astronomy presentation before being guided through the night sky to view various celestial bodies and formations. The observatory provides an opportunity to witness Saturn with its rings, a galaxy teeming with new stars, a dead star, the Milky Way Galaxy, and potentially the next Super Nova.
Very good very interesting our evening was captivating and we learned many facts. It is not the easiest place to find in the dark but it does have good instructions on the web site. We were very lucky as we were the only 2 there so we did not have to wait to see or take turns. That could remove some of the fun if you had to wait for 9 other people to look each time through the telescope as he said he usually has up to 10 people at a time. Maybe check how many are going before you book to commit. It also was a very dusty night so we couldn't see everything so check weather before you go. Kangaroos along that road are also in the 100s so be aware and give yourself time to get there so you don't have a catastrophe with one.
Charleyne M — Google review
We saw Saturn with its rings, a galaxy that has one million new stars, along with a dead star and the Milkyway Galaxy, the next Super Nova which could happen any time, amongst many other incredible sights of the night sky while stargazing at Warrumbungle Observatory..

It was a great experience, if you are in the area you will miss a big thing if you don’t visit Warrumbungle Observatory. Josh was great, very helpful and friendly, thanks heaps Josh. Also, bring your SLR Camera and before hand learn how to detach the lens, and change the ISO and Shutter speed setting to take great photos with the telescope. Shutter speed: 30” ISO: 3200

Staff did a good job even on a moon lit night. Would recommend new moon time though. Nice selection of telescopes. Explanations and guidance was for people who don't have much experience with telescopes. For someone who has their own telescope and has done a bit of astronomy you won't get much out of it as the staff keep explanations to a level that everyone can understand. Well worth it though if you are passing through Coonabarabran.

Great experience for star gazing. Lots of telescopes so not competing for your turn. You can attach your camera to their big telescope and get pics like below.

Plenty of off-road parking. A short, gentle up hill walk on a sealed path to the lookout. Lots of space at the lookout and an amazing view!

A really good lookout to view the Warrumbungles if you have a mobility issue. Sealed pathway to the lookout, about 500m, fairly easy walk with bench seats along the way. Information placards to tell the history of the surrounding area. Great views, particularly at sunset.
Tim K — Google review
Easy 5 minutes walk from the car park. Great first stop in the park. You can see the panoramic view of the famous landscape, and there is also an information board on the volcanic activities and how were the mountains formed.
Lerong L — Google review
The 500 metre walk is well worth the visit. Two benches along the way for those wanting a rest or to savour the view for a wee bit longer. Some tables in the car park area for that lunch/tea/coffee/ or something stronger but no toilets anywhere.
Yasemin H — Google review
This is a very easy 500 metres walk to the lookout. This lookout gives you some of the best views of parks mountains landscape. The views are very nice from here. There are a lot of tourist information boards located at the lookout to tell you about the location and the different mountains evolutions. I really liked the lookout.
Daithí K — Google review
Amazing spot to catch the sunset over the Warrammbungles. Gets cold at dusk so bring plenty of warm clothes.
Michael M — Google review
Many reasons to like this lookout: Easy to locate, quick 500m loop accessible to all fitness levels plus prams and wheelchairs. The walkway has a bit of loose gravel so best to be a little cautious. Love the Panaromic view at the lookout where you get to see all the majestic natural structures (calling it that because there a few different ones). So in case you can't make it on the other treks or walks, you kind of don't get the feeling of missing out !

Love dropping into visitors info centres on arrival in a new town. This one has the bonus of a great small museum showcasing mega fauna fossil (well worth seeing) and some great astro photography. It also has a small cabinet of local Aboriginal artefacts. As usual, very helpful and knowledgeable staff and a great collection of info brochures

Excellent stop for travellers and nature lovers! The Coonabarabran Visitor Information Centre is a wonderful place to stop — full of great information about local attractions, walks, and the nearby Warrumbungle National Park. The displays are amazing, especially the dinosaur exhibit, which both kids and adults will love! Another thing on the bucket list ticked off to stay in the Shamrock. It was affordable in the heart of historic Bendigo. Room very Comfy with an annex two lounge chairs, large TV good ensuite. Dinner in the down stairs bar excellent, (even pensioner neals) if you love old this is the place and there's a lift.

My husband and I have just discovered that information centres are excellent for stopping at charge EV. Recently we road tripped from a orange to nightcap ridge to get married and we stopped at quite a few Info centres. Coonabarabran was our favourite as the lady on that day was fascinating to talk to. They have an amazing museum of mega fauna fossils that were discovered in the early 1980’s and they had excellent photography exhibits from kids taking photos of space. Our only disappointment was we couldn’t buy any of the photos. Truly a wonderful pit stop filled with great service, information and interesting facts. We’ve enjoyed sending pics of the fossils to our nephews and talking to friends about our new Knowledge.

Stop here. If you are deciding whether to stop here or go further to the next town… don’t. This is by far the best caravan park. Good communication with staff, clean, safe vibes, the best toilet and shower blocks in terms of privacy and cleanliness. Highly recommend. very old school style of park. new owners so improvements happening. new camp kitchen just completed last week. small but clean amenities. great value. site a bit rocky and hard and dusty. manager a friendly young bloke who was happy to have a yarn around the communal camp fire each night. Local Coonabarrabran Stargazing runs astronomy experience nightly in the paddock down the back, book this online.
Sandra M — Google review
A lovely bush set park just outside town. The service was friendly and helpful, the sites adequate. The playground was pretty basic, and didn't really get a workout. The pool was freezing, so didnt test! Bathrooms and camp kitchen all acceptable, with the exception that the kitchen didn't have anywhere to wash up! A strange omission. All in all, a lovely stay. Especially recommend enjoying the stargazing while here.
David B — Google review
Great overnight stay we had here. Very minimal truck noise, nice amenities, spacious caravan sites and friendly hosts made this brief stop very enjoyable. We also did the stargazing tour (run onsite) and it was fantastic.
Andrew S — Google review
Alan was super friendly and accomodating - cheers. Well maintained, toilets are cleaned, we camped and had a pleasant stay. Can be a bit noisy if staying close to the main road if in a tent because of trucks, but still slept through it just fine.
Aqtp — Google review
a fantastic spot just on the way into town staff were very helpful and the park was VERY well laid out with pull through powered sites, a fantastic camp kitchen. individual fires are not allowed but there is a communal fire pit and the host brought plenty of fire wood to keep us going! We got to mingle with the other families and had a great time. The only down side was that the park is right on the spot that trucks slow down before entering town and they use compression breaking right in front of the park. star gazing is available, the Solar system drive around and the pool was clean and ready... I decided not to try it in July but it looked good. Laundry Room was spotless
Ryan B — Google review
Great little van park. Drive though sites are very easy to park in. If you're staying here, doing the Star gazing tour in the evening located at the van park is an absolute must.
Brett P — Google review
Great park with drive through van sites and cabins. Lovely clean amenities and laundry. Very reasonably priced.

If you're looking for an unforgettable adventure, a visit to the Anglo-Australian Telescope is a must! Ascend to the fourth floor via the lift and immerse yourself in a world of cosmic wonders. With captivating displays about various constellations and planets, it's an educational haven that school-aged children will particularly enjoy. The journey up is marked by intriguing half models of Earth, Jupiter, Venus, and more.
Great experience for me. I'm sure I visited when the Anglo Australian Telescope was pretty new. There's a great educational display going through lots of categories of astronomical information.
Philip C — Google review
WOW, this place is awesome and so informative and interesting. A truly wonderful opportunity for learning about the work the skilled staff undertake on site for observation of our Solar System and beyond. A really unique opportunity to view the telescope close up from the observation deck inside the building. Fantastic views outside of the surrounding Warrambungles Ranges National Park.
Stephen M — Google review
2pm tour was fantastic! The guide was very engaging and very knowledgeable. We were a large group that day but still got to see everything in the allotted time. Plus the view from the outside catwalk was spectacular! If you are going in winter, rug up as the inside of the telescope facility has to be kept the same temperature as the outside.
Jillian M — Google review
A great way to finish our trip to the Warrumbungles. It was free to walk up to the Telescope and to ride the elevator to a viewing room inside the observatory.
Nathan M — Google review
Well worth seeing and doing the telescope tour. Staff were friendly and very knowledgeable. Amazing views.
Kris B — Google review
Well worth the trip! It was amazing to learn all about the history of the telescope, our planets and universe. Cafe staff friendly and coffee is good 👍 could do with some more souvenirs like posters, miniature telescopes, mugs, pens, books etc. Enjoyed ever minute of our visit.

Coonabarabran Stargazing offers an incredible experience of observing celestial objects with passionate and knowledgeable guides. Visitors can witness the four Galilean moons orbiting Jupiter and gaze at a globular cluster in the small Magellanic cloud, all against the backdrop of Coonabarabran's dark skies. The tour also includes a visit to the Anglo Australian telescope, where visitors can learn about galaxies and the universe from expert guides.
Attended a night stargazing session and fell in love with the sky all over again. It was a breathtaking experience! The host’s passion and deep knowledge of stars, planets, and galaxies were truly impressive. Despite the group’s many questions, he remained energetic and fully engaging throughout. Can’t wait to visit again!
Bhumika P — Google review
We booked the all day tour and night gazing. Unfortunately the weather was almost rain non stop while we were in the area, so we were unable to do the stargazing and part of the day tour. That said, what we could do was great. Being able to enter the working areas of the telescopes was quite an experience. Branioc led the tour and you can tell he is very passionate about the telescopes, the site and his knowledge on space, stars, galaxies. We will definitely be coming back hopefully with better weather!
Mark M — Google review
The weather wasn't the best on the day but Branioc tried to make the best out of it. I love his enthusiasm and the way he explained what we were gazing at. The group was a manageable size and everyone was so respectful and showing interest. I joined another stargazing session with a different operator and sad to say the experience was chaotic. I highly recommend Branioc and his team for the stargazing experience. They may not have the best spot for it but the enthusiasm and experience made up for it.
David K — Google review
As well as the star gazing, we also attended the tour of the Siding Springs Observatory. We found Brainioc to be extremely knowledgeable and answered all our questions. I would definitely recommend both the tour and the star gazing.
Sharon M — Google review
We thoroughly enjoyed the stargazing session. The guide was very knowledgeable, professional and ensured everyone had a great time with no questions going unanswered. Highly recommended
Josh — Google review
Attended the experience last night (16 July) and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Branioc is a pleasant and personable young man who really knows his universe. Don't forget to rug up.... really rug up.
Michael C — Google review
My wife and I went on the observatory tour just recently, and we were absolutely in awe of Branioc's knowledge and passion for science, technology behind the science, and the local area. First thing is the tour itself, inside and outside the telescope and observatory - the information imparted is not only very well explained, but delivered in a way for all interest levels. Whether you're an enthusiast, academic, or just simply interested. I even used some of the knowledge (height/elevation with the horizon) Branioc imparted, on a bush walk in the area the next day. Second major part of the tour for us was the fascinating history and ongoing work that occurs with the overall mountain site. We had a small group, which also allowed many questions, any that may have been extremely granular in nature, were followed up. Although we were there for a day tour, it is hard in Coonabarabran to not just look up in the day or the night, and be awestruck. This is must do activity if you're in the area!
Michael D — Google review
Amazing experience on a clear night sky. The host was very informative and took time to answer all the questions asked and gave us amazing facts for each of the sightings. He made sure everyone in the group got their turns to view the stars and planets. We went there as a family of 2 adults and 2 kids. My wife had step out to attend to our toddler and couldn’t participate for the whole tour, but the host was kind enough to accommodate her at the end of the session and made sure that she did not miss the event. We couldn’t stop talking about the experience even after returning home and will definitely visit again soon!

The observatory is nestled in a serene bush setting, providing a tranquil atmosphere perfect for stargazing. Visitors rave about their stay, highlighting the exceptional hospitality provided by hosts Gary and Merrill.
Finally got here and so worth the wait. Brilliants Gary and Merrill looked after us so well. Gary's knowledge of the cosmos was enlightening to us mere mortals. Despite the cool winter night, it so worthwhile listening and observing. The B&B part was brilliant; really nicely done accomm and the mushrooms, although not quite magical, they were a taste sensation. A very enjoyable cooked breakfast to see us on our way. Thank you both so much!

The rooms were comfortable and well located in a lovely bush setting. Happy to give it 5 stars on the understanding it's not competing with the London Savoy. A great place to spend 2 nights, with fine breakfasts - as good as any BnB run by a lovely couple could provide. The night-time experience was wonderful. In the planetarium - interesting & immersive (short) movies about diverse subjects (native Australian astronomy, fractals, the universe). Then, amazing views of galaxies and planets, esp Jupiter & Saturn, thru a 15" telescope. Relaxing, educational, and fun!
Russell R — Google review
Beautiful, spacious rooms for a short or extended stays. The breakfast was great and the hosts, Merril and Garry were wonderful. Try to go during new moon between March and October to enjoy the most amazing Milky Way show. Garry also gives you a tour and a look at the stars at night via their telescope.
Nila S — Google review
If I could give more than 5 stars I would! It was a fantastic experience. We went at a time when the weather wasn't the most ideal and stayed one night, even then, they were very accommodating, making sure that we can make the most of the time we had here. The planetarium was incredible, very calming and informative and fun! We learnt about things inside and outside of the standard textbook, for example, sir Jagadish Chandra Bose, never heard of him, but hey, the more you know the merrier, right? Haha star gazing was very eye opening and highly recommended. You must experience it yourself! Finally, the breakfast with Merril and Gary was enjoyable and lovely! We had a insightful discussion about visual art with Merril. They are very wise and respectable people. Definitely going to visit again!
Hwee H — Google review
The hosts Gary and Merril were delightful and helpful in helping us get settled. Gary took me for a tour of the stars, looking through telescopes. The beds and facilities provided were very comfortable and breakfast the next morning was deliciously prepared by Merril. Highly recommend!

Most reviews are about the friendly nature of the hosts but neglect to mention the run down accomodation. Don't even think about the mini golf. It hasn't been tended to in years by the looks of things. Telescope tour was great.
Steven G — Google review
Great place to stay, Merril and Gary are the perfect hosts, and there's not much that Gary doesn't know able astronomy. It's a shame we arrived there late, because we missed out on seeing the stars through the 40" telescope, nonetheless we did get to use the 12" one at the domestay, which was still amazing.

Very nice stay for the 5 of us, and yes it's a bit run down but comfortable and the friendly service of our host's were 5*. I would stay again. Thanks Gary & Merril

If you don't know what a Yowie is..... read up on it before heading to the area. There are several reports of them being seen around this park area.
