Very large fabulous beach with many events!

Large and wide beach with fine sand and nice walking and biking paths. On the other side you can enjoy great oldstyle villas and a few superb new ones too.
Dave D — Google review
Miles of beautiful white sand, with picturesque blue and white tents to hire. Massive plus point was free WiFi on the beach. Would recommend as a lovely day out with the family, definitely a place to relax for an day, or even just an afternoon.
Ollie G — Google review
Excellent beach. Sand is very flat under the water so there’s a lot of space to play in the surf without going too deep too quickly. Very warm too.
Richard N — Google review
Beach was really nice, sand was not typical of beaches in Europe. Very fine and not grainy. Accessible and has public toilets

The Marché Central de Royan is a paradise for lovers of local products, offering colorful stalls of fresh fruits, vegetables, seafood, and regional specialties. It provides an immersive experience in the local gastronomy. During summer, don't miss the lively night market along the waterfront for a convivial atmosphere on warm summer nights.
Big covered market selling local produce including meat, seafood, cheese, breads and patisserie, fruit and veg, local wine, cognac etc. outside stalls also selling cloths, jewelry also. Well worth a visit....
Val R — Google review
Superb market with lots of wonderful stalls both inside and out. The prices are a little more expensive than surrounding shops but it has to be a must visit for anyone coming to Royan
Tweedie — Google review
Just amazing. If you like food, you must visit. Fabulous fresh produce, great seafood, including stalls selling fresh oysters to eat there. A great experience and not overly expensive
Danny K — Google review
Brilliant market with semi permanent sites inside and plenty on the outside. Food we bought was brilliant. Some of the quality of the bits outside was a bit low.
Josh S — Google review
Beautiful market with fresh regional meat, fish, fruit and produce. Prices are competitive with supermarkets and the staff is very friendly. I highly recommend the fruit stand and the huitres!
Dimitri — Google review
I like the design of their covered market. Many selections of fresh seafoods and fresh local produce.
Joan — Google review
Probably the coolest town market I've ever seen. Looks like a giant clamshell made of concrete. Inside is a bustle of activity with many local, fresh products for sale. We bought some coffe and the vendor was super enthusiatic about his product and informative about it's origins. There was a Sunday market going on outside around the structure. Really cool from an architecture and shopping viewpoint, recommend a stop.

It's a magical place with beautiful gardens and a variety of reptiles to have a close encounter with. There are also friendly alpacas, horses, goats and cute little bunnies jumping around. Hours of pleasant strolling. I especially liked the zen garden with an impressive collection of bonsai trees.
Joanna K — Google review
Wasn't expecting much when we planned our visit but it's really well layed out with plenty to see. The kids enjoyed it as well as feeding the goats. We were here 3 to 4 hours
Jared E — Google review
It was a great day out, our 6 yr old twins really enjoyed the mixed bag of attractions (reptiles, spiders, dinosaur models, Indian teepes, goats to cuddle, trampoline). We spent around 4 hours and just wish we had taken a picnic as there was a very comfortable seating area for that. We paid an extra 3€ for the goats feed which was worth it.
Alexx L — Google review
Great day out for the family. Fantastic collection of reptiles and a great garden/park walk that winds its way around the lakes full of ducks, fish and otters. The park has piles of dinosaur models, some interactive. Included in the price is a small go-cart course at the far end of the garden and trampolines at the end of the route. A mini farm of goats and alpacas too. You can also see the breeding tanks with baby snakes etc. It also has a nice chill out area with a snack bar near the end of the route. A really excellent day out - good luck getting the kids out of the gift shop!
Andrew A — Google review
Wonderful place, huge, can take all day. The reptiles were lovely and there were expansive gardens. Huge grounds and diverse activities. Four stars because not sure about the racist/imperialist shrunken heads and the brownface spectacles. That was dated and culturally insensitive, especially with the emphasis on cannibaliam.
Clavain R — Google review
Great value spent hours there ,plenty ro see and do
Annette M — Google review
Very nice, beautiful place with dinosaurs and Indian village, and living reptiles. Nuggets and fried potatoes are delicious!
Guclu O — Google review
Nice combination of zoo, park and dinosaur exhibition. Lots of small interesting touches, like a Japanese garden with a few bonsai, a bamboo forest, koi carps. Try the paddle boat tour if you have some time. Great day out with kids. But bring your own packed lunch, as the snack bar has very slim pickings.

Pontaillac Beach is a picturesque sandy cove known for its iconic striped beach tents, making it a popular spot for surfers. It's the first beach northward that catches Atlantic swells, offering great surfing opportunities. During high tide in summer, there's still plenty of space available. The area across the road offers good dining options and even features a casino with stunning views of the surfers. This beach is also perfect for photography enthusiasts, especially during sunset when the colorful shelters are illuminated.
Nice spot for photos. At around 19 o'clock the shelters are lightened in changing beautiful colors. During ebb you can make nice shots from the beach and the shelters.

COOLONGALOOK Adventure Park offers an exhilarating experience with aerial rope trails set in a lush forest, catering to both kids and adults. The park features various height levels for different age groups and includes thrilling zip lining activities. Additionally, the park provides entertainment for children with attractions like a Ferris wheel and a Belle-Epoque carousel during specific months. Visitors appreciate the efficient online booking system and commend the English-speaking staff for their excellent safety briefing.
My husband [60yrs] and I [54 yrs] decided to do the Grand Parcours trail. It was fantastic fun. What an adrenaline rush! You are provided with a harness and must watch a video which is really clear about what happens on your day, how to use the equipment and what not to do. You then are briefed by one of the staff members and have a tester go on a mini course on hooking up to a wire and walking along a platform; this gives you a bit of confidence and an understanding of using the equipment. The staff provided excellent customer service and their English is definitely better than my French. We started at level 1, it's a relatively lower height course, which includes nets, wooden platforms and stairs. Once you get the hang of it you're ready to go. The rest of the levels get more challenging and include brilliant zip lines, where you rush through the air supported by your harness. The guide helping us through the courses was amazing, he was encouraging, supportive and praised our achievements. He clearly explained a more difficult part of the course ensuring everyone felt confident to have a go, and watched the group checking everyone was ok. We also observed him going up the tree to help a boy who had frozen in fear on a section of the course, and again a small child by taking her across a little bit of a junior course. He helped us when we had a wobble too. Definitely recommend trying this. It's a lot of fun. I am not the fittest of people but managed to do it all -even though Im aching now though. Thanks to all for making this a wonderful membrane party of our trip. I recommend bringing water to drink and cover yourself in mosquito repellent!
Jenny W — Google review
Came here with my 8yo and we did the medium and hard courses. Staff were all very good and helpful and cheerful, with excellent English and patience with the kids! The hardest course was the first time I've ever done a ropes course that challenged me. It was a good choice on the hottest day of our holiday, because of the shade in the forest. There are plenty of benches to sit on if you're just watching, and spectators can follow around on foot. Definitely recommend as we had a lot of fun. It is also very good value for money.
Terri J — Google review
Lovely place nestled in the forest just like Go-Ape. Plenty of courses for children and adults with a couple of nerve testing drops. The staff spoke excellent English and played the instructional/safety briefing in English too. Our kids did a mixture of Laser-tag with us two parents and then the Junior and adult courses and it came to 90€ which compares favourably to Go-Ape back home. Toilets on site thankfully as it kept our kids entertained for about 3.5 hours. Would recommend 👍
Kev H — Google review
We had a really good morning here the staff are extremely friendly, their English was excellent, didn't catch the guys name but he had long hair and encouraged the children brilliantly. The girl on reception was really helpful, we had booked dour 2 oldest children on the big course but thought the others would be on their own so booked dthe nets instead for them and ourselves. The girl at the desk suggested our 2nd youngest would maybe prefer the climbing as the nets wouldn't be much for him to do and he was able to join the others. The firl advised that actually one of us didn't need to pay for the nets as our daughter is only 5 and refunded us the difference. Children all really enjoyed us and loved it!
Lorna H — Google review
Arrived about 10 when there were other groups arriving but only brief wait to get in having per booked on line. I am writing in English because I want to thank the young team for their command of the language and the excellence of the safety briefing they gave my grandchildren aged 8 &11. They loved the whole experience especially the zip wires and coped with the age appropriate obstacles very well - just the right amount of challenge. They're already asking when we can come back. PS They said it was better than the one near Marennes!
Bill H — Google review
Great obstacles that were scary, challenging and fun. Easy continuous safety system and extra carabiner for safety. The grand course took us around 3 1/2 hours. There are goat wondering round the park and sometimes sitting on the platforms and tables. Will we definitely be coming back.
Trish A — Google review
Excellent time at the park. The challenges were varied, interesting and scary, but most importantly, safe - perfect for the parcour experience of one adult and two boys. The staff were friendly, attentive and ensured we had a great time. Would highly recommend.
Mr Y — Google review
We were a group of 5 (2 adults and 3 teenagers) and had a great morning. It was a hot day but the forest canopy kept us cool. The course got progressively harder and the adults definitely has a few aching muscles the next day! They could do with a couple of water points on the course. We were stuck behind a school group which was frustrating at the start but managed to overtake them.

The campsite is conveniently located near various swimming options including city beaches in Royan, the beach of La Palmyre for water activities like surfing or windsurfing, and the lifeguarded beach of Saint-Palais-sur-Mer suitable for family swimming.
Outstanding camp site. We return every year. Toilets and showers are always clean. Super pitches are massive with waste and water on each pitch. The kids love the park. The pool is big enough for everyone. The restaurant has had a new chef and food has improved. Location, beach is 3 miles and easy to cycle too. Bakery and spar is 0.5 miles away.

Beautiful site, quiet with friendly staff. Many beautiful beaches nearby and has a lovely swimming pool. The pitches are huge, and I mean huge, and the amenity blocks are spotless. Language isn’t an issue but it’s nice to try and is appreciated by the locals. Shop on site but there’s a co op and bakery five minutes walk away. Well recommended
Wayne W — Google review
A lovely family campsite. Huge piches with a very relaxed atmosphere. Some pitches are in the shade under trees whilst others are more open in full sun. We had an all service pitch with mostly sun with a little shade. It was just right for us. The people here are very friendly with caravanners greeting each other and stopping to have conversations. We met many people who have been returning here for many years. The reception staff are lovely and friendly and helpful. The toilets are fine but there are no toilet seats which was a bit of a shock to start with. The pool is lovely and we spent lots of time on the boules pitch. There is a lovely children's play park but we didn't use this. There are lots of great cycle paths straight from the campsite. The shop caters for basic needs and you can get fresh baguettes and croissants daily. The restaurant is very good and the takeaway is great. Even though we spoke some French, they all spoke English. Our campsite had a visiting circus every two weeks during our stay. There are some great local towns to visit and some lovely nearby beaches which are a short car journey or bike bike ride away. We had fantastic weather during our three week stay. All in all we have had a great experience and we will definitely be returning.
Katrina R — Google review
We had a lovely friendly welcome on arrival and were given a booklet about the site and the area which was very informative. We had a choice of a few fully serviced pitches (water electricity and drainage) and the one we chose was huge. There was loads of room for our American RV, Trailer and car plus heaps of room to sit out. The site is immaculately clean. There are plenty of facilities and washing machines. The pool area is lovely with loads of sunbeds. We loved to see gardeners around each day tidying up and doing maintenance. There is a shop on site in case you forget anything. There are Supermarkets not far away in St Palais Sur Mer or Royan. It was very peaceful even though when we arrived there were a lot of folks there. Its close to the sea for a nice stroll in the evening. There are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from in the area. The restaurant and bar on site has unfortunately had to shut as it couldn’t make a profit. A van turns up most evenings run by some young lads just starting out on this venture. There was a few teething problems but I hope it works out for them. All in all this has to be one of our favourite sites in the 2 ½ months we have been travelling around France. Thank you for a lovely stay and we would 100% recommend.

Nice big camping pitches. Quite a way from the beach, but access to a path and 6km walk or a short car ride. Restaurant / Bar was shut, which was a real disappointment for us - we were not told this before arrival which was a shame as reportedly it had been shut since 15 August.

Brilliant site. If you want massive this is not the place but this was definitely our type of site. Quiet, calm and pitches are just so nice. Thanks to the most patient man on the site who clears the park at night. My kids funniest memories are being chased off the park by 'the hide and seek man' (Christian I believe, what a guy). We went in the highest of season and as we know France can be crazy this time of year but this site was so tranquil. Loved it, will be back 100%

Just finished a 3 week holiday here. Would i return again YES. Mix of British, French, Dutch - All friendly, met and spoke to loads of people. Owners very polite and friendly. Pitches: Caravan / Motorhome / Tent pitches are huge. Plenty of room. Some pitches in sun, some in the shade. State what you prefer on booking. - No issues for us. Also available are Service Pitches. Toilet Blocks: 3 big toilet / shower / washing blocks dotted around the site, Showers were fine. No waiting around. Water Temp was fine. No issues. Pool: Newly Built pool complex with slides and mini pool for younger kids, also has a covered pool and a lazy river type pool. Slides are fun, water depth in the slides area is about 1m. Other depths vary across the pool. Didn't feel quished with lots of people in pool. Plenty of sun loungers dotted around the pool area for sun bathing. Showers are changing rooms are also within the pool complex. Reception: Very helpful and friendly, lots of tourist leaflets to have a look through. They also sell few nice bottles of wine in reception. Lady speaks French, English, Spanish. She also recommended local Vet and Car garage to us. On Site Shop: Opens 8am, you can pre-order your baguettes / Choco pans night before or just turn up early at 8am. Shop sells the bear essentials. Biking: You can hire bikes from reception and go out on the tracks. As a family - Bike tracks are towards the back of the site and is mostly tarmac going towards La Palmyre (10km). Plenty of bike signs to various small towns. (La Palmyre, Palais, Breuillet) You can bike to the beach, have a coffee and wander around for a good few hours and bike back. Park: Good Kids sized park with play forts, zip lines, swings, see-saws. Ideal 3-12Yrs. Opened in mornings and locked in evenings. This is meeting point for kids to play for few hours. Kids in the evening play hide and seek with the parkie, this is very popular and both my boys still talk about this. Gaming Room and Book Room: 2 small converted barns units. Lots of kids in the gaming room most days. Tennis Court: Tennis court available. You have to pay for hourly rate to hire. Boules Pitch: Located next to the Tennis Court, sandy boules pitch. Football / Basketball complex: This gets used mostly by the bigger kids and generally this is the meeting point for kids after Tea for a football match. Entertainment: Archery is on offer every Wed and Sunday in the big grassy area. This is popular, everyone gets a go. Circus comes on site once a week, again this is popular. Kids love it. Restaurant / Bar: While we were there restaurant and bar were busy most evenings. Cannot comment on food as we cooked in our caravan. Restaurant however is in the process of changing hands, they are now closed awaiting for new owners to come along. Vet for Dog: - English Speaking. Fully recommend Vet in Breuillet (Clinique Veterinaire des Dr Laure Mauriat et Dr Olivier Marchal) +33546025956. 15 drive from site, got a next day appointment, English speaking. Knows exactly what they are doing regarding paperwork from coming back to UK. - We had no issues coming back home. Shopping: Royan - 20mins drive. Loads of big shops. Breuillet - Intermarche is the big supermarket - 15mins. Closest Shop: Closest Shop is Co-op. This is walking distance roughly 10mins They also have a Bakery (Very popular) and a Tabac Shop. Exit towards the back of the site. Post Box / Post Office: Post Office (La poste) is opposite Co-op. English speaking. Zoo: We visited the Zoo in La Palmyre - This is a good day out. Zip Line Activities: I fully recommend Indian Forest in Les Mathes. High tree top climbing with zip lines. Much smaller courses for the littles ones. They also have snack food, free on site parking. Roughly 20 Euros each. Good 5 Hours spent here. Beats UK Go Ape any day.

Plage de Saint-Sordelin in Vaux-sur-Mer is a little-known gem, tucked away discreetly among the rocks. It's a tranquil spot where readers, chatters, children, and caregivers find solace during lunch breaks. The beach offers a quiet retreat with calm waters most of the time, making it perfect for leisurely walks or jogging. While swimming is not supervised and caution is advised due to algae and rocks, the off-season brings about a serene atmosphere.
I think the French have kept the best bits to themselves :) Not just this beach but the coastline around Vaux-Sur-Mers is beautiful for walks.

A pretty little cove, but I would echo the advice of other reviewers - at low tide there are lots of sharp rocks, and at low tide people will be swimming over them. Be wise. Wear shoes.

Plage du Pigeonnier is wider than some of the other beaches in Royan, but it has a more intimate feel due to the limited number of houses nearby. It is supervised during the summer months, making it a safe place for swimming and lounging. Accessible via a small staircase in the rocks, visitors can easily descend to the beach at low tide or quickly retreat as the tide rises.
