Alessandria Cathedral, originally dedicated to Saint Peter in 1170, was located in Piazza della Liberta. As the population grew, a new cathedral was built at the end of the 13th century on the same site. However, Napoleon ordered its destruction to make space for his army. The cathedral is described as imposing from the outside and even more spacious inside with tall colorful windows that allow natural light to fill the church all day long.

(Translated by Google) The Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Mark in Alessandria (Italian: Cattedrale dei Santi Pietro e Marco) is the city's main church—the impressive, though somewhat lesser-known, cathedral of northern Italy. ⸻ ⛪ Cattedrale dei Santi Pietro e Marco – Overview 📍 Location: • Address: Piazza Giovanni XXIII, in the very center of Alessandria. • Surrounded by a wide square, which emphasizes the monumentality of the façade. ⸻ 🕰️ History of the Cathedral • The original cathedral existed since the 13th century but was demolished in the 19th century by Napoleon, who needed space to expand his fortifications. • The current cathedral was rebuilt and consecrated in 1879 on the site of the former Church of St. Mark. • Since then, it has been dedicated to St. Peter and St. Mark, patrons of the city and the universal Church. ⸻ 🧱 Architecture 🔸 Style: • The main body is neoclassical with neo-Romanesque elements. • The design is inspired by the classical basilica style—on a Latin cross plan. 🔸 Facade: • Imposing, tall, with vertical pilasters and a triangular tympanum. • A rose window and cross are at the top. • The central entrance portals with carved lunettes—simple yet elegant. 🔸 Bell Tower: • Next to the cathedral stands a freestanding campanile (bell tower) with a clock—one of the tallest in the city. (Original) Katedra św. Piotra i św. Marka w Alessandrii (wł. Cattedrale dei Santi Pietro e Marco) to główny kościół miasta — imponująca, choć nieco mniej znana katedra północnych Włoch. ⸻ ⛪ Cattedrale dei Santi Pietro e Marco – zarys 📍 Położenie: • Adres: Piazza Giovanni XXIII, w samym centrum Alessandrii. Marka. • Od tego czasu nosi wezwanie św. Piotra i św. Marka, patronów miasta i Kościoła powszechnego. ⸻ 🧱 Architektura 🔸 Styl: • Główna bryła utrzymana w stylu neoklasycystycznym z elementami neoromańskimi. • Projekt inspirowany klasycznym stylem bazylikowym — na planie krzyża łacińskiego. 🔸 Fasada: • Imponująca, wysoka, z pionowymi pilastrami i trójkątnym tympanonem. • U szczytu znajduje się rozetowe okno i krzyż. • Środkowe portale wejściowe z rzeźbionymi lunetami – skromne, ale eleganckie. 🔸 Dzwonnica: • Obok katedry stoi wolno stojąca campanila (dzwonnica) z zegarem — jedna z najwyższych w mieście.

(Translated by Google) A beautiful, majestic cathedral with rich interiors. A three-nave basilica with a transept and a dome at the intersection of the main nave and transept. From the outside, on the side there is a tall and slender tower - the bell tower. The interior with numerous, richly decorated altars. It is definitely worth leaving the highway and visiting the city, if only to see the cathedral. (Original) Piękna, majestatyczna katedra z bogatymi wnętrzami. Koniecznie warto zjechać z autostrady i odwiedzić miasto, choćby dla zobaczenia katedry.

(Translated by Google) This beautiful 11th-century cathedral is located just outside the historic center, but can be reached on foot in just a few minutes. The small square is reminiscent of Hungarian squares, with its soft colors and the shapes of the houses. The neoclassical façade is simple, embellished with Corinthian capitals, colonnades, and statues, but the true beauty lies within. Three enormous, richly decorated naves lead to the altar. What particularly struck me were the stained-glass windows and small windows, some in the ceiling, which let in natural light, illuminating the entire cathedral. A sweet melody plays when there is no mass. The vault above the altar is immense and beautiful. There are 24 statues of the knights of the Lombard League. The cathedral was rebuilt after being destroyed by Napoleon and is dedicated to Saints Peter and Mark. It houses several works of artistic importance. But the cathedral's most distinctive feature is its magnificent 106-meter-high bell tower, the second tallest in Italy. It is the symbolic monument of Alessandria, just like the Mole Antonelliana in Turin or the bell tower of San Marco in Venice. Tre enormi navate riccamente decorate, conducono all' altare.

Nestled in the heart of Alexandria, the City Hall, affectionately known as Palazzo Rosso, is a stunning example of neoclassical architecture that graces Piazza della Libertà. This historic building, with its striking red facade and octagonal vestibule, was originally constructed between 1772 and 1825 under the guidance of architect Giuseppe Caselli. Although it faced destruction during World War II, it has since been beautifully reconstructed.

The Catholic church Parish S. Maria Del Carmine is a visually stunning place of worship, designed in accordance with the architectural trends of its time. Unfortunately, access to its interior is limited as it is only open on Saturdays and Sundays. The surrounding area boasts a spacious courtyard that adds to the overall appeal of the church. It holds sentimental value for many as it represents their childhood memories or connections through family members who have served there in various capacities over the years.

(Translated by Google) It is, after that of Santa Maria di Castello, the oldest church in the city, one of the few surviving monuments of medieval Alexandria. It was built in stages from 1320, but in its history it underwent numerous transformations: already in the second half of the 14th century it was replaced by a larger building, which in turn was enlarged after 1466 with the construction of the main chapel, until the construction of the side aisles, the sacristy and the other chapels, whose work ended in 1576. Although it is in a somewhat sacrificed position, it still manages to capture the eye thanks to its purely Po Valley Gothic appearance. The entrance portal is very beautiful.

The Romanesque foundations are even older than the city itself, in fact it was the place of worship of the Rovereto village which was here before the foundation of Alessandria. (Translated by Google) It is undoubtedly the most important monument in Alessandria, as well as the oldest church in the city, among the very few surviving buildings from the medieval era. Furthermore, it is located in the territory that once belonged to Borgo Rovereto, an early medieval settlement that pre-existed the foundation of the current capital. It is no coincidence that under its foundations the remains of two previous churches were found, probably built between the 9th and 12th centuries. The current building was built during the fifteenth century and completed in the following century (the consecration took place in 1545): the beautiful Renaissance portal dates back to this last period. Overall, Santa Maria di Castello is one of the best examples of Po Valley Gothic in the area, built in exposed red brick and decorated with pinnacles, with a polygonal apse and alternating ogival and round-headed windows. The lack of transept gives it a particularly slim silhouette. The bell tower is valuable and, inside, the sixteenth-century terracotta sculptural group depicting the Deposition is unmissable.

(Translated by Google) The church of San Giovannino was built following a bequest to the Veneranda Confraternita del Santissimo Crocifisso. It must be said that the church of Saint John Beheaded to which the will refers was, in all likelihood, the church of the knights of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta which stood almost in front of the church of San Giacomo della Vittoria, further towards Piazza Marconi. According to the will they had to build not an ecclesia, but an oratorium therefore a smaller building, juxta et prope dictam ecclesiam, that is, "similar and close" to it, not as a replacement or expansion. In fact, there are only a few hundred meters between this one and the one in the will. The original title of the church and the Confraternity was: St. John the Beheaded. Since it was the smallest of the Alexandrian churches dedicated to this saint who is also often depicted with the features of a child, it was called San Giovannino as early as 1524.

If from the outside it seems quite anonymous, upon entering it envelops us with the warmth of the paintings, sculptures and works of art present on both the walls and the ceiling. The organ is also noteworthy, occupying a good part of the space, it appears too majestic for the size of the church. So locals and tourists can take the opportunity to indulge in a moment of tranquility enjoying the beauties that adorn this church including a copy of the Holy Shroud... (Translated by Google) A small "country" church, in the municipality of Garlenda, renovated and reopened for worship. Built in 1890 following the demolition of the Old Church (already mentioned in the Statutes of the municipality of 1534) due to the earthquake of 1887. The church has a rectangular shape with the apse oriented to the south and the axis slightly rotated to the east. A characterizing element of this sacred building is the external pulpit used to preach to the faithful gathered in the adjacent lawn under the large centuries-old oak (national monument) on August 16th, the day of St. Rocco. The church stands near a monumental oak, an inestimable world heritage site, which characterizes the San Rocco Region.
