(Translated by Google) Everything that is managed by the municipality or in the Basque country is horribly long and inefficient. Whether it's the cycle paths, the echoguette squares, the dismantling of the streets or even the construction of this museum. Everything is slow, tedious, poorly managed, I agree with all the negative reviews. Yes it will be a good museum, but depriving us of museum and culture for all these years is excessive.

A 14 year long closure is not "temporary."

(Translated by Google) Outrageous that it has been closed for so long. This is a good example of the disastrous management of public services in general, or assimilated like town halls etc... if it were a private foundation it would have been reopened a long time ago with a cafe or restaurant, a boutique dedicated objects or other. In Nancy, the museum has been closed for more than 10 years, depriving the population of its heritage.

Cathédrale Sainte-Marie de Bayonne is a stunning Gothic cathedral with twin towers that stand tall on a hilltop. The cathedral, completed in the 1500s, boasts medieval cloisters and offers breathtaking examples of Gothic architecture. Visitors can take a tour of historic Bayonne to learn about the city's fascinating history and its legendary rulers. The cathedral overlooks the Nive and Adour Rivers, offering picturesque views.
A beautiful Cathedral set in Bayonne. ❕ The stained glass windows are impressive- you could wonder around the Cathedral for ages looking at everything, in a beautiful surrounding with so much history. The outside garden section is very Harry Potter esc. 🚨

St. Mary's Cathedral in Bayonne today... A Gothic building made of oak stones of Mousserolles and white stones of Bidache, construction began in the 13th century at the site of an older church and a temple of Mars, a very beautiful 14th century cloister remained intact, keys of vaults often armored that we recall when they are at the arms of England
Mazhar A — Google review
Very beautiful cathedral. When we went, there were little market stalls all around too.

History Museums
Located in Petit Bayonne, the Musée Basque is a state-of-the-art museum that delves into the rich culture, decorative arts, architecture, and language of the Basque people. Housed in an impressive 17th-century property alongside the Nive river, this museum provides insight into what it means to be both French and Basque.
Great museum! It's much bigger and diversified than in Guernika. And very friendly staff.
Ekaterina S — Google review
Fantastic museum with so much to see and learn about the wonderful Basque culture. Recommended
Alden C — Google review
A good resource for trying to learn more about Basque culture, though maybe a little lacking in exhibits that track the Basque experience to the modern day. We visited on a Thursday when the museum doesn’t open till 1pm and we were the first in, which was great cause it was super quiet and we could take the exhibits at our leisure.
Keelan G — Google review
Very extensive collection of artifacts from the Basque region. But there is nothing a about politics nor any history about that. And DON'T ASK QUESTIONS about it. It's apparently a very delicate subject.
Chris D — Google review
Incredibly interesting museum about the Basque people with particular focus on the French Basques. Information is generally only available in French, Basque and sometimes Spanish. Most in only French and Basque. But the exhibits are interesting and it’s nice to learn more about this incredibly unique ethnic group!
Max S — Google review
Very good (also on rainy days) overview on Basque traditions and history. I miss a little bit deeper insight about people's wandering before settlement here, but really rich exhibition on history of pelote! Btw: Bayonne is a beauty of a city!
Johannes H — Google review
A great museum with a little bit of everything:- Basque geography, history, culture and society displayed through art, objects, furniture... Very clearly laid out over 3 floors and lovely staff. If you are an English speaker, there is a guide booklet you can borrow from the desk to walk around with and also QR codes on certain objects which link to webpages in French, Spanish, Basque and English. Video and audio exhibits and interactive/ tactile/ sensory stations for children. Plus a costume dress up area on the ground floor. I learnt so much about Basque culture from giant wooden wine presses to how they made clogs and espadrilles and 'makhila' (a wooden walking stick with a hidden spike) and the game of pelota (hard to describe but like a mixture of squash, rackets, hand ball and hurling!). When I visited there was a great temporary photography exhibition of early 20th century colourised photographs of the region (on until January 2024). Bayonne is a great little city and this museum right on the side of the river, close to the indoor Market (Les Halles) and near lots of lovely cafes, bistros and restaurants is a great place to visit. Highly recommended. Cost 8 euros (adults). Also free lockers for bags, umbrella 'lockers' and clean toilets.
J C — Google review
There's a lot to see, but not a lot of information on what you're looking at and it's not very coherent. It's the kind of museum where they have a lot of stuff to look at and it's up to you to figure out why it's there. For me that's not why I go to a museum, I'd like to understand what I'm looking at, how it relates to the area, history, developments in society, etc.

L'Atelier du Chocolat - Musée du Chocolat is a must-visit for chocolate enthusiasts. The museum provides an insightful journey through the history of chocolate, particularly focusing on how Bayonne became the chocolate capital of France. Visitors can witness the chocolate-making process and indulge in a delightful tasting session guided by an expert. Children can also enjoy a special workshop, adding to the fun experience for families.
Fun museum tour, with the entry price. The chocolate sampling at the end was also fun. Everything is translated in multiple languages including English.
Gene D — Google review
You can book the tours very easily online. We did it in one of the shops. The two people working in the shop in the museum were very nice and could speak English very well. Almost everything is also written in English. They even offered to change the video that usually runs in French to the video in English. You can watch them working in the factory. Very interesting. They have a little activity for children at the end. My daughter loved it. Trying the chocolate at the end was of course the best. The man working at the shop explained each piece of chocolate very well, and it was very interesting. Of course we couldn't leave empty handed.
Irene L — Google review
The lady at the reception who seemed to be more senior than the others were extremely rude and bullying. Her gesture and mimics gave an expression that she really doesn’t welcome you at the museum. We were so shocked. Other employees were very nice. The desk they served the chocolate for tasting was dirty and the chocolate tasting was very amateur woth no detailed information on the chocolate. Poor experience, horrible hospitality. Regret visiting
Doga D — Google review
This is THE place/palace of Chocolate! The museum offers a nice trip through chocolate history. In particular, it explains how Bayonne has become the chocolate capital city in France. The visit ends with a delicious tasting. Guided by an expert, you can taste different flavors of chocolate and also share your feedback. Kids are even offered a workshop … (this is a surprise!) Last but not least, the shop is a great opportunity to purchase top quality products for a reasonable price.
Nicolas T — Google review
Fun experience for kids. The history is clearly laid out and then you get to see the chocolate being made and of course the best bit the tasting.
Aoife L — Google review
A fascinating journey through the history of chocolate and how the Basque country became such a powerhouse of the stuff. The tasting at the end was surprisingly informative! If you are staying at the nearby Campanile the 'atelier' is just behind it. Google's walking directions will take you on a long windy route, but there is significant shortcut... ask at reception.
Martin B — Google review
From outside the museum looked small but the inside was a pleasant surprise. There are lots of things to learn about the process chocolate goes through all the way from the farms to the shelfs. Information is written in both French and English. Chocolate tasting was great, the presenter was very friendly and warm. Worth the price and time, I recommend.
Metrine B — Google review
Lovely way to spend a couple of hours finished off with chocolate tasting! Chance to see the chocs being made so on an industrial estate but don't be put off. Interesting museum & chance to try before you buy. Very helpful lady explains everything & the smell of chocolate when you 1st walk in us wonderful !

Castle
Military Bases & Facilities
Château-Vieux - Gaztelu Zaharra, located in Bayonne, France, is a historic castle dating back to the 11th century. Originally constructed by the Viscounts of Labourd, it served as the official residence of the city's governors, including Edward, the Black Prince. The quadrangular building features cylindrical corner towers and an interior patio and was reconstructed in the 17th century.
Nice chateau in old town of Bayonne.
Vladimir B — Google review
In all seriousness, a major disappointment ... the Chateaux Vieux should not be on a 'top X' list of things to see/do in Bayonne. 1. It is somewhat messy around in terms of renovation / etc because ... 2. It is an active military establishment (an officers' mess) and there is no visiting and prohibitions against getting too close to it. Interesting, perhaps, to see but considering everything else there, low on the totem pole. Too bad that it is an officers' mess rather than something (the large number of) tourists (and locals) could visit.

(Translated by Google) Another of the buildings that you should visit is The Old Castle, one of the most important fortresses in the city, built at the end of the 11th century on a Roman fort, and which is an excellent example of medieval military architecture. It has been used as a residence by the city's governors, and currently has military use and although it cannot be visited, you should come and see it as it is located in the old town of Bayonne, near the cathedral, and offers a very charming environment. I personally was struck by its rounded towers and robust walls that perfectly reflect the defensive techniques of the time. They told us that beyond its original military function, the castle is a symbol of local identity and has been a meeting point for generations of Bayonne residents.

Let’s be clear, this is a room in the back of a shop so I feel the name “museum” is a bit strong, but worth having a look if you’re in the area as it’s free.

1. Really shouldn't be called "Musee" -- it is a store w/a nice small exhibit/discussion in a back room. 2. Half of the 'musee' is more a homage to the family and, well, an "I love me" panel to the family member (and his athletic career) currently running their production/the store. 3. Despite that, reiterate, a "nice" small discussion of Bayonne/other hams and they are kind enough to have pages translating all the material into (if I recall correctly) six languages.

(Translated by Google) No children allowed. I was forced to leave because (I quote) my one-year-old's laughter "disturbed the reading of the signs." From an exhibition on freedom of expression, Plantu and Reza. We're not talking about a tantrum, a tantrum, or tears, no, the laughter of a toddler while I'm visiting. In my opinion, a child who goes to a museum is an adult who will go to a museum, but apparently not for the city of Bayonne. With a self-assured air, the gentleman then proudly showed me that at the entrance there is a sign stating that proper behavior is required. I felt like I was hallucinating. Please note: the laughter that escapes a baby is tolerated in solemn places like the services of our Bayonne parishes, but it is forbidden in these museums whose walls are covered with photos of children, to satisfy one man's zeal. A word to the wise. A bon entendeur.

(Translated by Google) Always wonderful new exhibitions! I first discovered this place with Raymond Depardon, and I've been going ever since... Admission is free. Currently, until September 19th, there's an exhibition on Hugo Pratt: the creator of Corto Maltese and others... For more cultural experiences, the Atalante is next door and Spacejunk is just a stone's throw away. Don't hesitate to go in. Health and safety protocols are, of course, still in place. Pierre Ibaialde is a renowned producer of jambon de Bayonne, a cured ham seasoned with local spices from Espelette. The company takes pride in traditional hand-made production methods, setting their product apart from industrially prepared hams. Visitors can learn about the process during an engaging 45-minute tour, which includes insights into the cultural significance of the ham in Bayonne and its role in local traditions.
Very interesting presentation which makes you appreciate the difference between industrially prepared ham and hand made traditional production.

We wrote an e-mail and filled the web form asking for English tour. No previous answer were received and no translation during de visit. We also tried, days before, to contact by phone and no contact was established. I'm very disappointed and I've felt very uncomfortable. The same day but in the morning, we enjoyed a visit at L'ATELIER DU CHOCOLAT DE BAYONNE. Without any previous contact, we received information in English and Spanish. We are very greatfull and we recommend it. We felt sweeter!
Carlos L — Google review
A unique experience at the Jambon de Bayonne factory and shop! We joined a guided tour (in French only, so we followed along with Google Translate), and still managed to understand most of it. The guide explained how Bayonne ham is made, and the differences between French and Spanish varieties. We were taken upstairs to see how the ham is salted and then dried — very interesting process! The full tour lasted about 40 minutes. On their website, you can also see how they carve the ham, which adds to the experience. After the tour, there was a small tasting session — quite small, honestly. One thin slice of ham, two small slices of sausage, and a tiny toast with pâté. We expected a bit more. The group had around 36 people, but the guide spoke clearly and everything was easy to see and follow. In the shop, you can buy their full range of meat products — ham, pâtés, sausages, and local snacks with Espelette pepper.

Discover the thrilling and immersive experience of the TOO LATE Escape Game, the first of its kind in the Basque Country. Designed by cinema decorators and game professionals, each room offers a unique and challenging puzzle experience that will put your problem-solving skills to the test. The welcoming staff ensures a warm reception, while the GameMaster provides fair and helpful hints without giving away too much.
Great experience with the family at TOO LATE Bayonne - The Cartel of San Pedro. The decor is fantastic and really helps to create a realistic scenario of being locked up in a Mexican prison. The game itself is definitely a challenge on numerous levels, and clearly a lot of work has gone into preparing the entire experience / game. Sadly, we failed to find the 20kg and were hung by the Sheriff, despite the occasional clue offered via "Radio Bandidos". Staff were super friendly and I'm sure we'll return to try some of the other experiences. Thanks again for a great afternoon. SW

(Translated by Google) A little disappointed by this place which doesn't offer much. If the cellar is beautiful and unmissable, the sound and light that we listened to was of little interest. On the ground floor there might have been some interesting things, but nothing attracted us. It's a shame that the two young women mainly let us hear their comments on their favorite day cream (this one against spots, this one great during pregnancy, "I love this brand!"). In short, we didn't want to bother them to find out more about what there was to see here. La Luna Negra in Bayonne is not your typical cabaret venue. Nestled at the foot of a Gallo-Roman tower, this unique cafe-theater has been entertaining audiences for nearly 25 years. With a cozy and warm atmosphere, it's a great place to discover talented artists through live performances including concerts and comedy shows. The small performance hall offers comfortable seating with a clear view of the stage, while nearby restaurants and tapas bars provide dining options before or after the show.

(Translated by Google) A small, intimate venue with just over 100 seats, allowing you to enjoy the artists from close quarters with the audience. This creates a very intense connection between the audience and the audience, but it undoubtedly tests both the singer's ability to communicate with her audience and the audience's ability to integrate into the show. Olala!! What a privilege it was to see an accomplished singer and even better person like Kaz Hawkins live; it was as if we were in my living room. But that—the concert—is a different story. Absolutely recommendable, despite the uncomfortable seats, a minor issue, no doubt. Olala!! Nestled on the heights of Bayonne's ramparts, the Bayonne Botanical Garden is a serene escape that beautifully blends nature and tranquility. This enchanting garden features traditional Japanese elements such as charming bridges and tranquil carp ponds, creating an idyllic setting for relaxation. Spanning nearly 3,000 square meters, it showcases a diverse array of plant species, including unique endemic varieties like the delightful katsura tree—known for its sweetly fragrant leaves reminiscent of candy and gingerbread.
Small garden but a lovely place to relax and worth a visit if you’re nearby. It is free to enter.

Nature preserve
Nestled in the heart of a bustling area, Forêt du Pignada offers free access to its expansive pine forest, making it an ideal escape for nature lovers. As you wander along its wide sandy paths, you'll encounter fellow walkers—some with dogs (often off-leash), runners, and even the occasional horse. The sheer size of this forest allows for moments of solitude where you can enjoy the tranquility without seeing another soul.
This public park is well used by hikers, runners, bikers. Exercise stations. Paths are kept unobstructed, but nature does most of the work of providing a lovely setting for an hour outdoors.
Lee R — Google review
This immense forest in the middle of a densely populated area was a surprise but at the same time a disappointment. Although it's well maintained and clean, there are no benches, trash cans etc apart from two picnic areas, one at each side (north and south). Main paths are sandy which seems a little unnatural but also helps to avoid mud on days with or after rainfall. This is a great spot for a gentle stroll or to walk your dog, go for a run, etc. but I'd not recommend it as part of a larger excursion.
