Te Puia in Rotorua, New Zealand is a Maori cultural center and geothermal preserve that offers a unique blend of nature and culture. Spanning 60 hectares, it features the impressive Pohutu Geyser, the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere, which erupts around 20 times a day. Visitors can choose between day and night experiences, with the latter offering an enchanting atmosphere under the starry sky.
We did the Te Pu combo and what an incredible experience! Well worth it! The guided tour to see the Kiwis and the Gysers was a brilliant start, then the buffet dinner was absolutely delicious, such a range of food to cater to all tastes and dietary preferences! The cultural display was stunning, so interesting to learn immersively about the Māori culture. Then onto the Gyers and light show at the end, which was a stunning end to a wonderful evening. This honestly is a do not miss

Te Puia is an absolutely stunning and fascinating place — the geothermal landscape, the geysers, and the deep Māori heritage make it truly unique and worth visiting. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and the cultural spirit of the place is unmistakable. However, the guided tour was quite disappointing. It felt overly long and slow-paced — 90 minutes, with at least half of that time spent standing around without much happening. While I fully understand that the tour is an important source of income for the Māori community, visitors also value their time and expect an engaging, well-structured experience. Several people in our group clearly lost interest, which is unfortunate because Te Puia has so much to offer. Suggested improvements: • Shorten the tour to 45–60 minutes, focusing on the most interesting and meaningful parts. • Add more interactive or live elements — demonstrations, Q&A sessions, brief performances, or moments for guests to engage directly. • Consider offering two options: a standard tour and a premium cultural experience, so guests can choose the depth they want. • Train guides to keep the storytelling dynamic, with more energy and interaction. The place itself is extraordinary — it just deserves a tour program that matches its beauty and cultural significance. With a few thoughtful changes, Te Puia could easily become one of the most memorable experiences in New Zealand.

A truely wonderful experience and a must for visitors to not only Rotorua but to New Zealand and the magnificent islands. The beauty is how New Zealand has embraced the Māori culture and rich history. This experience includes everything from traditional dancing show to seeing the springs to a lovely buffet dinner. The attraction is only a 5 minute drive from town centre so is easy to reach, but make sure you book tickets in advance! Enjoy

This is a must do if you visit Rotorua. From understanding Māori traditions, craft education, geothermal geysers, and kiwi conservation through to a fantastic cultural experience with song, dance and a haka. And yes if you are lucky you will get to see one of the kiwi birds in their nocturnal house. Our guide Ngahuia was excellent and was passionate about telling her tribe and ancestors story. A fantastic couple of hours. Highly recommend a visit and make sure you book tickets in advance and ones that include the cultural performances. Afterwards we visited the Pataki Kai cafe for a panini and drinks. Nice end to the visit.

Great place. Experienced the geothermal wonderland - natural geysers, bunking muds. Māori arts and crafts Institute. They had personalised guide, who explained in detail. Good food and cultural programme. Some memoirs are available to be purchased. You can see Kiwi butlers in captivity. Though you walk around and go closer to the geysers on foot, they arrange electric carts for your return.

This experience was fantastic. We did the Te Po combo. The guided tour through the school was so much more than I thought it would be. I learned a lot and I love the idea behind the school. Its such a lovely concept. The dinner was also great. I wasnt expecting much but the food options were plentiful and everything was so delicious. Cultural performance was stunning and fun and beautiful all at the same time. Seeing the geyser at night was beautiful. So peaceful and pretty. I highly recommend doing this option and taking in all the culture and history. Everyone who works at Te Puia is very passionate about their Mouri heritage. Thank you

One of the best experiences we had while staying in Rotorua! We did the Te Pō Indigenous Evening Experience. The Māori cultural performance was probably the highlight, seeing it in person especially the Haka is powerful. Our tour guide, was super friendly and engaging with our group. We got to see the Pōhutu Geyser and have the Hāngi Buffet for dinner -which the food was unreal. Overall a great experience, couldn’t be happier certainly a bucket list thing to do if you visit NZ
Jamie G — Google review
We went on the guided tour and saw the school interior, saw Kiwi learnt a bit of the artwork process - all carefully and manually done. The gayser view and smell were also one of a kind, in a positive way. :) Luckily we were also privileged with the Maori cultural evening experience followed by hangi dinner and international company. I truly would like to focus here on the appreciation of the set up, Maori not abandoning their roots and cultural heritage. Last and not least me being able to experience a bit of the culture. I strongly recommend the Te Po and the full 90 minutes tour with Kiwi's. Thank you

Government Gardens is a picturesque waterfront park in Rotorua, featuring a geothermal bathhouse and museum with stunning Tudor-style architecture. Visitors can explore the 50-acre parkland, which includes historic buildings, geothermal features, fountains, and rose gardens. The area in front of the Rotorua Museum offers activities like bowls, petanque, and croquet.
Wow, this garden is absolutely stunning! The colors are just incredible, and it looks so peaceful and relaxing. I could totally spend hours wandering around and taking it all in. That garden is truly a sight to behold, I'm so impressed! The vibrant colors and meticulous arrangement of the plants create such a calming atmosphere. It's clear a lot of love and care has gone into cultivating this space. I especially admire the way the different textures and heights are used to enhance the overall design.

Great spot. Lots of renovations going on when I visited. Also the finish line for the annual Run the Forest event.
M S — Google review
sadly the huge museum building was closed off due to renovations but the place is really pretty, huge dpaces of empty space just grass tho, buy still relaxing and worth the visit
Prasasya N — Google review
Nice, the bath pool building and behind it seems under heavy construction of a new museum. But the monument round about is elegante and the rose garden tempting.
Ekinista T — Google review
We came at the onset of spring and the flowers have not exactly bloom or if would have been better eg the rose garden were just seedlings when we came. However, some interesting places like the hot springs and statues of old war heros. Recommended especially to those who like walking, calming places and history buffs.

Farms
Agrodome is a working farm located on the outskirts of the city, offering an authentic New Zealand farming experience. It's a great destination for families, featuring farm shows, animal interaction areas, and wool demonstrations. The sheep show is particularly impressive and educational. Visitors can learn about rural life in New Zealand and the history of farming while enjoying hands-on experiences such as milking cows, feeding lambs, and shearing sheep.
We are family of 4 with two kids age 4 & 8. We loved everything here in Agrodome. From the entrance with smooth check in, to the fabulous show, until the fun truck ride with many animal stop with feeding. Everything is very organised and surprisingly very clean. We enjoyed our lunch in the cafe with spectacular views. Kids enjoy playing in the playground beside the cafe too. Overall very satisfied.

Incredible interactive farm experience! We visited as a family of 3, with my 1yo+ and he loved feeding the animals! We also got to try Manuka honey which was delicious. The animals were definitely kids friendly! We then went onto the farm show which was entertaining and my son got to feed the lambs! Super adorable. Also never knew there were that many breeds of sheep! Would highly recommend to anyone visiting Rotorua. Thanks team!

24 sept 2025 Lovely experience. The show was very engaging and entertaining. Dogs were friendly. Then this very manly farmer? brought us around the farm. It was raining - so all the sheeps cows and alpacas were soaking wet. I still got down to feed them while everyone else stayed in the transport. Then manly farmer gave us honey to taste. 😂

We visited while in town for my son’s first birthday, and he absolutely loved the show and tractor ride. My older children also enjoyed the experience. Although the weather wasn’t ideal, with rain during the tractor ride, it didn’t take away from the experience. It was a fantastic tour, and we look forward to visiting again.
Ana A — Google review
Such a fun experience for kids and adults alike! We loved the farm show and the opportunity to see so many types of sheep. It was especially fun that some of our group members got to go on stage to milk a cow and bottle feed a lamb! The farm tour was also amazing, so cool to be able to pet and feed so many types of animals. Some of the sheep were a little aggressive in getting to the food though, so keep in mind. The adventure playground was also a highlight for the kids, with a fun obstacle course and lots of things to climb. Right before we were going to leave, we noticed the farm nursery and stopped to pet some more baby animals before our departure. Overall we spent about 3 hours at Agrodome!

Great day out. The sheep show was very interesting and entertaining. Feeding the animals out in the paddock was great fun. Don't forget to visit the Kiwi hatchery while your there
Geoff P — Google review
Absolutely loved our time at Agrodome! Thank you to Sarah for taking us on the Farm Experience tour. There was something for each of our kids (13,5,2) and it helped build their confidence with animals and especially feeding/being close up to sheep, alpacas etc. Loved having a playground for the kids to keep them entertained while we got some lunch from the cafe sorted. All in all we had an absolute blast and would highly recommend a trip to Agrodome. Something to suit everybody!
Christina B — Google review
Fantastic experience for kids. Our daughter got to experience feeding sheep, alpaca, and deer which she really enjoyed doing. A must visit if you have little ones. Only letdown was the food. We booked a buffet lunch and had high expectations but the selection was quite few and could easily say it was not worth the price.

Nestled on the serene shores of Lake Rotorua, Polynesian Spa is a renowned natural mineral bathing and luxury spa retreat. With 28 mineral pools fed by two natural springs, it offers a rejuvenating experience that nourishes the skin and soothes tired muscles. The spa specializes in health and wellness treatments, catering to both relaxation seekers and athletes with hydrotherapy and reflexology walk options.
I recently visited Polynesian Spa Rotorua with my family, and it was an absolutely amazing experience! ✨ The lakefront hot pools are so relaxing, the atmosphere is peaceful, and the views of Lake Rotorua make it feel truly special. 🌊🌿 The staff were welcoming and friendly, and everything was well maintained and super clean. After a few days of travelling, soaking in the natural mineral waters was exactly what we needed to refresh and recharge. 💆‍♂️💆‍♀️ It was especially heartwarming to bring my parents here — they loved every moment, and it became one of the highlights of our Rotorua trip. 💖 Highly recommend Polynesian Spa to anyone visiting Rotorua — whether you’re a local or a tourist, this place is pure bliss! 🙌
Somendra S — Google review
Our half day at the Polynesian Spa was just perfect! We were welcomed warmly and given a great introduction to all the amenities. Our package included the deluxe pool area and a treatment. The view over the lake from the pools is stunning. Pools with various temperatures were relaxing and offered good sitting areas. So relaxing and not at all too busy. The massage treatment was excellent. One of my best! Highly recommend a visit here!
Debbie H — Google review
My family of three had a wonderful time at the spa. We were warmly welcomed and shown around. The setting is fabulous - right on Lake Rotorua and totally private. There are five pools of varying temperatures plus a freezing cold plunge pool. We tried everything! It was so relaxing and invigorating. The hour long Swedish massages were also terrific. Very friendly staff. Lovely to sit in a super comfy chair after the massage and take in the view sipping herbal teas.
Geoff K — Google review
Absolutely loved our experience at Polynesian Spa, Rotorua! We booked a spa and massage package, and it was amazing. The lake pools were beautiful — four alkaline pools (great for the skin) and one acid pool perfect for sore muscles, all with stunning views over Lake Rotorua. Our couples massage was incredible — huge thanks to Cheeney, a fantastic masseur who made the whole experience deeply relaxing. The package also included a tasty lunch, fresh juice, and later smoothies in a private lakeside room. We enjoyed it so much we stayed until evening, soaking up the peaceful atmosphere. Highly recommend Polynesian Spa to anyone visiting Rotorua — the perfect mix of relaxation, nature, and pampering. Can’t wait to come back!
Angela A — Google review
We came at 11am because we wanted to relax ourselves in a spa environment and it was really pleasant to be there. We paid 100$ for two people with unlimited access to 8 hot pools : 3 alkaline and 5 acidic. We loved being there and highly recommend this place for anyone looking to spend a day at great cost !
Ryan — Google review
Booked a massage and included was soaking in the lake pools which are alkaline and one acid pool (sore muscles). You can’t beat the location of this Spa. It is literally on the lake. The pools are right next to a small garden and the lake is right there. The seagulls are on the garden area. That’s how close you are to the water. They have this location because they have been there since the late 1800s. The pools are surrounded by rocks and feel very natural. The water is varying temperatures. Very, very relaxing. They also have some outside chaises that are heated. I booked a massage with Ni Luh who was fantastic. I told her about my sore spots and she paid attention to them. She is very sweet and very accommodating. At the end of the massage she gave me a coupon for a complementary juice or smoothie and I was taken to a relaxation area where she gave me some tea. Everything is pristine clean. The locker rooms are large and there are blow dryers, and plenty of towels. The only comment I have is that they don’t give you cups for water and you have to drink out of water fountains. I purchased a bottle of water at the café at the front of the spa. It would’ve been nicer if they provided cups for water. Otherwise, had my smoothie at the café and also had a grilled sandwich which I enjoyed. I wasn’t sure how this experience would be but it’s a top notch spa and they definitely go out of their way to make you feel welcome and happy. I would definitely go back there.
Barbara G — Google review
Great Spa, But Hygiene Rules Need to Be Enforced I’m a Rotorua local and visit the Polynesian Spa almost every day. It’s a beautiful and relaxing place, but lately I’ve noticed some group tour visitors behaving in ways that make the experience uncomfortable for others. Some people change clothes outside the changing rooms, enter the pools wearing their regular clothes or underwear instead of swimwear, and even spit or blow water out into the pool. It’s unpleasant and unhygienic. After COVID, everyone should understand the importance of cleanliness and public manners. I hope the management will give stronger reminders or warnings about proper spa etiquette to keep this world-famous place clean and enjoyable for all visitors.
Sunny L — Google review
Visited yesterday after seeing all great reviews but was very disappointed. We decided to take our three children but on arrival walked through and seen there was only one small pool for kids to play in and two hot pools for us. It looked like the pool in a compound surrounded by four walls and no views of the lake or anything else. Given the price of entry is the same as hanmer it is no where near habner in being family friendly. That said me and my partner would look at visiting again without children to get the full experience but if your traveling with children and think they would enjoy it save your money and take them the local swimming pool.

Forests
Redwoods – Whakarewarewa Forest is a picturesque redwood forest in Rotorua, New Zealand. It offers walking, biking, and horse-riding trails with convenient toilet facilities. The forest features majestic Californian redwoods reaching over 70 meters in height and beautiful native trees. Planted in the early 20th century, these redwoods have thrived and grow even faster than in their native habitat. The extensive network of mountain biking trails makes it a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts.
Absolutely gorgeous experience. Lots of amazing and Beautiful trails to walk, various lengths so you can plan the day putting well. Moderate level of fitness required. Breathtaking views at one point. Lots of animals. There are even horse tracks and biking tracks also. Decent parking. Visitors centre here also. It's also the access area to the redwoods tree walk.
Gingerbeardclown — Google review
A fantastic experience. I didn't think I was good with heights but doing the night treetop walk was so beautiful with all the lanterns and sculptures lit up. We also did the daytime walk which gives even more perspective of the size of the Redwoods. If you can only choose one, definitely do the night walk. Also, you are able to walk a loop track through the forest (with dogs on leash) for free.
M J — Google review
The hiking trip was a great experience, made even better by the clear and easy-to-follow signage along the trails. The signs not only guided the way but also provided a range of walking options with different time durations, making it convenient to choose a route that suited our pace and preference. The variety ensured that both casual walkers and more seasoned hikers could enjoy the area comfortably.

We went just after a coupe of days of non-stop rain and personally was worried it will be ruined but found it just as exiting and quite fresh and alive due to the rain. Well worth the visit and highly recommended, even our 4 year old really enjoyed it.

Great open forest with amazing open spaces, a decent river for off lead dogs on one side and the mtb, walking trails, and on lead dog space on the other. So much range, easy trails, different woods and people, excellent for a chill ride, good jog or run, or just a wander as you head to the cafe.

the redwood nightlight treewalk was brilliant.Zero waiting time, small manageable crowd, all because it was not school holiday yet in nz 😄 loved the walk! laterns were beautiful. The only thing was we couldnt read the info provided in between the hanging bridges coz it was dark😂 this walk was on my MUST to do list in nz!

Beautiful, even in the rain!! The trees are incredible, we didn't have much time so took the Memorial Grove Trail. The trail is short enough that we were able to get coffee at the end and be back in the car within the hour. Don't worry about the trail being too short to fully immerse yourself either, just stunning!

Rainbow Springs Nature Park, established in 1932, is a popular destination in New Zealand for encountering native wildlife, particularly the iconic kiwi bird. The park is dedicated to conservation efforts and offers interactive experiences such as the Kiwi Encounter shows and a live kiwi foraging exhibit. Visitors can also enjoy attractions like the Big Splash rides and a dynamic Bird Show featuring exotic species.
What a wonderful adventure. We arrived early to beat the tour buses & crowds. It was so worth it. Got to walk the park at our leisure & see the exhibits without the crowds was a treat. Got see the birds getting fed & the Kiwi exhibit was fantastic. ❤️ Fed the fish & the ducks. If you can, arrive early for the best experience. Let’s you see the critters without fighting for a view. Feeding time is a treat. Staff are VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE & friendly. I learned so much. The exhibits & enclosures are well described & presented. Park is easy to navigate. Parking is no problem. I’m going back again in 2019. We also hit the mountain & did the. Luge & it was a blast.

I loved the park because of its variety of display. You can see different animals with little descriptions about them. Water splash is very entertaining for adults and kids. And my favorite, I got a chance to see Kiwi birds. Wasn't so happy that, I admit it was my mistake, to accept the offer of seeing the park myself, by the cashier lady, rather than having a guide . Few spots were closed for public and that was also not mentioned when purchasing ticket.
Maja P — Google review
Definitely recommend going on the free guided tour if its your first time as you learn so much and is quite interesting. They have play areas and interactive learning spots located throughout to keep the kids busy on the way through. The big splash ride was cool but all the speakers throughout no longer worked which was very disappointing. The cafe was average tidy and nicely decorated but bathrooms were not cleaned often enough and the food was overpriced and just okay. They offer free shows through out the days which are quite interesting and fun for the kids.

This place is lush, a little paradise with tones of things for a family to see and do. I added on the hatchery tour and was not disappointed, we got to see two eggs ready to hatch, one had its little beak poking back and forth out of a small opening that it hd already made. This can take up to 5 days to fully hatch. Then we went through another room and they had a baby kiwi, held by one of the staff behind the glass, with another keeper feeding him meat. The most adorable thing ever. We then went through the enclosure to the darker area where there were three separated adult kiwis, moving about searching for insects. Fantastic. I then proceded to walk around to see the birds and eptile areas, it was a good display and the animals did not dissapoint. They have a cafe and gift shop and also very modern and clean looking toilets which is always a pleasent treat.
Carol A — Google review
Awesome wildlife park in Rotorua with some unique features. The walk through the redwoods, aviaries and trout pools is the same as it ever was. They have added 'playscapes' along the way which is great to keep kids busy with physical activities and hands-on games. There's also an area with various water experiments to keep little minds busy. The jewel in the crown is, of course, the kiwi house where you can learn about the national bird and eventually (hopefully) see some for real in the nocturnal house. Beyond this there is a playground (currently undergoing refurbishment but still a small area to play in) and the 'Big Splash' ride by the cafe which is doesn't cost any extra but is looking a bit tired - the drop at the end is still a thrill tho.
Benjamin M — Google review
Fun for the whole family. Some cheeky wee birds and relaxed reptiles. The waterfall makes for great photos. We managed to get a glimpse of the kiwi too.
Ali M — Google review
A really lovely animal park, with an unmissable tour of the kiwi hatching centre. The information signs for each animal were much more fun and engaging than your typical animal park/zoo, which was good. We also enjoyed the (short but sweet) bird show and the log flume ride very much too. You'd be hard pushed to spend more than 3 hours here, but in that time there is plenty to keep you occupied! If my review and photos were helpful to you, please give me a thumbs up 👍🏼 Thanks!
Sam S — Google review
Beautiful small scale nature park. Great way to kill a few hours touring NZ. The kiwi encounter was very informative, however make note that you are not permitted to take photos or record video in the hatchery. If you are hoping to get a photo of the iconic bird live, you will not be able to. The additional cost you pay for this tour supports the program and sustainablity of the brown kiwi population.

Kuirau Park, situated just a short distance from the city center, offers a natural escape with its geothermal foot baths, hot springs, and a picturesque lake. The park features landscaped gardens, playgrounds, and playing fields alongside bubbling hot springs and mud pools. Visitors can stroll along wooden walkways amidst steamy geothermal activity for unique photo opportunities. Recently relocated free foot baths are now conveniently located near the playground.
This is definitely one of the best thermal parks that I've visited in New Zealand. Whilst it doesn't have the colours of Waiotapu or the unique guided experience provided at Te Puia, it makes it up in its own unique way. It's a fantastic public park with expansive lawns, foot baths and marvellous thermal pools with each turn providing new visuals that adds up to a very relaxing experience; perhaps perfect for a relaxing afternoon retreat when the weather's right. You'll easily spend hours here relaxing and admiring the stunning scenery. What's more? All this is available for free!

It was nice to be able to have a walk around a geothermal park that is free to view. Would be nice if there was some better drainage, so there weren't puddles inbthe grass walkways to have to walk through, but as mentioned, it was free!

A wonderful geothermal park with so many thermal springs lying around. We were even able to soak our feet in one of those hot springs with its healing minerals for our feet . Again another must visit sight and incredibly Free . I highly recommend it 👌

Kuirau Park is a clean and relaxing place right in the heart of the city. It’s well maintained, with tidy walkways, green lawns, and a few natural geothermal features that make it unique. There’s also a convenient public toilet nearby, which is very helpful for visitors. It’s a lovely spot to sit down, enjoy lunch, and simply watch the surroundings. The atmosphere feels peaceful, and the park offers plenty of space to rest or take a short walk. Whether you’re a tourist or a local, Kuirau Park is a pleasant place to unwind and enjoy some quiet time in the city.

A fantastic and free way to witness geothermal wonders up close. Don't miss the unique and relaxing free thermal foot baths. Well-maintained paths past bubbling mud pools, steaming vents, and a captivating crater lake – perfect for photos! On Saturday mornings, the vibrant Rotary Market adds local flavour. The sulphur smell is present (eeek), but welcome to Rotorua! It’s a must-see, offering a real taste of the area's natural environment without costing a cent.

This place is awesome for being a free park for anyone to wander around. Compared to Waiotapu, it is not be as vibrant and probably in need of some maintenance. Definitely worth a quick visit looking at all the pools or dipping your feet in the foot baths (super busy though)

If you’re looking for a place to see geothermal pools and explore with your family/friends Kuirau Park is the perfect place for you. You can see a vast amount of pools and as you walk through the trails you can unravel the amazing wonders of this park at a cost of $0.

Great place to soak your feet, and the playground is good if you stay around that part. However, there are some parts that aren't safe, and need to be fenced off so people don't fall into hot pools.

Whakarewarewa - The Living Maori Village is a cultural attraction located in the heart of Rotorua, New Zealand. It is the only living Maori village in the country and offers visitors a chance to experience the unique way of life of the Tuhourangi Ngati Wahiao people. The village provides guided tours, traditional Maori dance performances, and a feast featuring authentic Maori food.
This place is so neat! The steam mud vents and the geysers were shooting out steam while we were there. What beautiful geothermal landscapes! And the bonus was that we were able to see the baby kiwi bird in the enclosures. So cool! There was no wait when we were there on a Saturday afternoon in May. You will need to go with a tour guide which will be organized after you buy your tickets. Highly recommend this visit.

Great guide. She really brought the village to life with stories of her family and showing off the culinary skills of her people. Very friendly and wonderful town. Saw geysers, hot springs, and bubbling mud

I’m so glad I made time to do this and I highly recommend anyone going to give yourself a couple hours, buy the all day pass, and time it so you are there for their daily cultural performance at 12:30. It was worth every penny. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly and the performance and tour exceeded my expectations. Our guide, Daniel, was very patient and thoughtful. He made an effort to learn everyone’s name and took the time to genuinely try to teach us about the history, the culture, and the language. Huge thanks to everyone involved!

It is the legacy and home of the Tūhourangi Ngāti Wāhiao people, who have been sharing their unique way of life with visitors from all around the world for over two hundred years. The village is open 7 days a week with guided tours. We signed on to one of the paid tours though we had to contend with a slight drizzle. The tour is comprehensive lasting about an hour and half and goes through the village people's fascinating daily life in the geothermal springs area. It includes the bathing, washing, herb cultivation, cooking and walking past their homes. We ate corn cooked in steam for few minutes. It tasted yummy. The historical chief's home and meeting place are well preserved and interesting to see. Sometimes you can watch a cultural show by the village people. The active geysers in the area can be seen during the tour. Toilets available. Very popular place, lots of tourists and locals. Uneven terrain, lot of walking. Wear comfy shoes, take water, wear hat, sunscreen. Parking at the entrance is ample and is easy to find. There are many stores in the village selling craftwork items. Friendly staff and great service.

It was a rainy and cold day in Rotorua but it did not stop me from my very first “Maori experience”. It was very cultural and unique place to visit for tourists. The chief guided us through the village. She did it with all her hearts and respect to her culture. We really appreciated the visiting session. We also booked the Haka show and it was very emotional and worthwhile. The artists performed wholeheartedly and the audience can definitely feel it. I highly recommend taking the tour to understand more about the Maori cultures while you are in New Zealand.

The guided tour at Whakarewarewa was amazing! We learned so much about life in the village and how people live with the geothermal landscape. Our guide was super friendly, knowledgeable, and made the whole experience fun. A real highlight was trying the corn cooked in the hot springs—the flavour was exquisite! Highly recommend this village tour if you’re in Rotorua.

This is a MUST VISIT place as the 1st nation are the people that makes New Zealand . It was an eye opener especially when the chief was the one showing us around. We even tried their cooked food using the thermal springs to cook. Excellent

The Redwoods Treewalk is a unique experience located in the iconic Whakarewarewa Forest, featuring 28 suspension bridges that take you through redwood trees over 120 years old. By day, it offers an extraordinary recreational walk, while at night, it becomes a magical setting for photography. The treewalk provides an opportunity to explore one of New Zealand's oldest exotic forests from a new perspective.
I booked the Day & Night Combo, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable highlights of my trip. Experiencing the forest in both daylight and after dark felt like visiting two completely different worlds. 🌞 Daytime Walk The daytime walk was calm, refreshing, and a chance to truly appreciate the natural beauty of the towering redwoods. Walking along the suspension bridges, high among the treetops, gave me a unique perspective of the forest floor below and the incredible height of the trees above. The light filtering through the canopy created a peaceful atmosphere, and I had plenty of time to slow down and soak it all in. The design features along the walk — including the wooden lanterns and artistic touches — blended seamlessly with the lush ferns and native plants. Even in daylight, these installations added colour and character to the natural landscape. 🌌 Nighttime Walk Once the sun went down, the forest completely transformed. Hundreds of lanterns designed by David Trubridge lit up the night in intricate patterns and soft glows, giving the forest an enchanting, almost magical feel. Walking across the bridges at night felt like entering a fantasy world — glowing shapes hanging among the trees, a giant illuminated bird in flight, and the forest floor bathed in vibrant lighting. What I loved most was the contrast: during the day, it’s about appreciating nature’s raw beauty; at night, it’s about immersing yourself in an art installation that brings the forest alive in a new and unexpected way. 💡 Overall The Day & Night Combo is the best way to experience the Redwoods Treewalk because it shows you two sides of the same forest — one tranquil and grounding, the other magical and dreamlike. The staff were welcoming, the walkways felt safe but adventurous, and the entire experience was well worth it. Highly recommended: If you’re in Rotorua, this is an absolute must-do.

Absolutely breathtaking! The towering redwoods create such a serene and calming atmosphere—it’s impossible not to feel at peace here. The trails are well-maintained, the air is fresh, and every corner feels like stepping into a natural wonder. Perfect for hiking, photography, or simply reconnecting with nature. Highly recommend this experience to anyone looking to escape the hustle and recharge in one of the most scenic forests I’ve ever visited!

Super late review! Brought my cousin here for a short holiday. He lives in SG and said what he loves most about NZ is how close it is to nature — everything feels so natural (since most of SG is man-made). We went up the tree walk with my young kids and they loved it! Such a peaceful and refreshing experience. Definitely a must-do when in Rotorua.

The Redwoods Nightlights in Rotorua was nice, but honestly not as amazing as I expected. The lights and atmosphere were beautiful, and it’s definitely something unique to experience once. However, the ticket price felt a bit expensive for what it was, and there were way too many people when I went. We had to wait quite a while to get on the walkway, and it got pretty cold later in the evening. It’s still a cool experience, especially for families or first-time visitors, but I’d recommend going early and bringing warm clothes. Overall, not bad — just a bit overpriced and too crowded for me.
Alex L — Google review
Prior warning there's a long wait. We were in the queue for over an hour. The long wait is not because of an inefficiency but for our own safety. But the wait is worth it. I recommend going at night. Because once they are lit, it is lit. The glowworm cave is an added bonus.
Devin N — Google review
Two star for the price. Ive wanted to do this for years, but the price was a barrier. Finally decided to take the kids, and saw a walking enterance! Pro tip - there's a free walking track under the loop! We went there at night and in the morning. The paid walk is literally to use the bridge. I was a bit shocked at how steep the price is for such a short distance. But the walk itself is stunning and a must do! (Bridge optional if you have money to burn)

Fabulous tree top walk. Very interesting and informative. Would love to do again at night to see the light show. The Glow worms (only just opened) were incredible!

A chance to walk amongst the Redwood trees of Rotorua but up above not on the ground. Apparently this is the world’s longest living tree walk. Easy to park and easy to get tickets from the isite shop. It’s only a 40min walk with an option to walk 20 metres higher which you must do

Perched at the top of the Skyline Gondola in Rotorua, Volcanic Hills Winery offers breathtaking views of Lake Rotorua and its surrounding hills. The winery's tasting room provides a selection of award-winning wines made with grapes from across New Zealand. Visitors can savor delicious Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Noir while taking in the stunning panoramic scenery through large windows.
A five-star experience. The view alone is five stars, but our server, Carmen, curated a delightful experience from start to finish! Carmen clearly knew her wines; she was patient, and her smile radiated genuine warmth. I lived in San Francisco for many years and we frequented the wine country. I am now trying to lean into the Australian and Zealand wines (whites, Pinots and other offerings) rather than the big bold Cabernets of California that defined the wine education in my youth. Carmen and I had a big discussion about Chardonnay oak and stainless, and again, it was clear that she knew her wines and especially the Volcanic Hills wines that she was serving. We also overheard her at the other tables educating other patrons and even trying to navigate some language barriers. She remained unflappable. All tables received a great deal of attention from her. This was no mere “pour and go” tasting. Carmen really took the time to educate every table about her wines. Kudos Carmen for such an incredible experience! We ended up taking home a few bottles. One of them never quite made it back to the states, because we still had a few days in New Zealand, and I opened it up in Wellington! Our next excursion after the tasting was at one of the Maori cultural centers, and Carmen told us a bit of history of the folks there and how she was related. What a great way to prep for our next experience and dinner. I was also really enchanted by one of Volcanic Hills whites, which is unusual. Those bottles make it home to the states!

A lovely lazy hour or so spen trying wines and the exceptional Tawny. Having ziplined and done a few luges, this was an oasis, while my son got in more luges. Carmen is such a great ambassador for the winery. Knowledgeable and friendly. The perfect amount of notes on the different wines. If you are going up on the gondola, make sure you call in.

Wow! What a treat! This winery has something for every wine enthusiast or even the "wine isn't my thing" person. The high-quality selection is impressive, but the service is the star. We had such an amazing time learning about all the New Zealand wines. The view is just so relaxing and the perfect setting to catch up with some great conversations. I was just so impressed with how awesome this winery was to visit. Wished I lived closer or this would be a weekly local spot to enjoy.

I went for the luge rides with my partner in August and we just spontaneously decided to walk into Volcanic Hills Winery Tasting room. Paige * i'm hoping i spelt her name correctly * instantly attended to me and my partner and provided us with wine tastings and even explained the wine making process and gave us pretty much a history lesson - which included the beautiful Mokoia island. She was fantastic! Someone please give that girl a raise or at lesst some perks as my partner whose french and veerryy particular about his wine ended up buying 3 bottles when we only came in to browse lol We came in from Auckland and i've been to the luge a few times but this was the 1st time coming into Volcanic Hills so Paige just provided with us with such a lovely experience - we will probably end up buying wine everytime we come up now tbh so thank you Paige! :D

Really enjoyable experience. Brent is super chatty and friendly. He shared his family's stories and adventures as well as his extensive knowledge on his wines and the global wine market. We chose the '3 wine tasting' NZ selection. I'd have gone for the 5 if I wasn't driving. Take away wines and affordable. Try the punchy Rosè and of course his buttery smooth sav...

Great wine to try. I have tasted three wines. Pinot noir, passion fruit flavour and sparkling sweet. They all taste awesome. The girl was in the cashier at the top of the hills is super cool. She is so friendly and helpful when we pick wines. Don’t trust my words just taste the wine and see.

A truly amazing experience from start to finish. Quality safety gear that is in top shape is provided, and additional layers are also provided for colder weather. Guides were very professional and engaging with all the guests, more like a family adventure rather than tour with strangers. Awesome information between zip lines about forrest conservation and even hand feeding of birds in the wild. Highly recommend this experience for individuals and families.

Skyline Rotorua is an adventure center offering a range of thrilling activities such as luge tracks, zip-lining, and a high-adrenaline swing. The experience begins with an eight-seater Gondola ride providing breathtaking views of Lake Rotorua and the city. At the top of Mount Ngongotaha, visitors can explore nature trails, go mountain biking, or indulge in shopping and wine tasting.
This was beautiful and a lot more fun than we thought it would be for a gondola ride and a luge ride, especially since I'd never done a summer luge before. The gondola was really well run, easy to get on and off, and the staff were very accommodating for those of us who were slower. The breakfast buffet was *amazing*. The chef behind the breakfast bar was making these astonishing fried eggs, and there was actually black pudding along with most of the rest of a great British style-breakfast. Lots of fruit, including the local canned plums, and all one might want for breakfast. The luge was super safe, actually. I loved that if you accidentally let go of the handlebar it would automatically brake you to a standstill. The courses were clean and clear and easy to follow, the higher ranked courses had good banking, the easy one didn't have any banks, but I suspect they assumed you weren't going to be going that fast anyway and it brought me through some beautiful forest spaces there. It was fun to see the wildlife that had come to exist there as the people were pretty much stuck to the courses but the wildlife were content to just be clear of the tracks. We also found a nature walk, that had quite a few detailed signs for the kinds of wildlife, plant life, and features one should be able to see in the area. That was more fun than I thought it would be and the walking trail is actually quite a good distance and up a good grade.
Phyllis R — Google review
Skyline Rotorua is absolutely stunning and fun. You get amazing views on the gondola. And an amazing view on the mountain of Rotorua. The zipline is super fun and beautiful and taking photos on the chairlift back up is a highlight. The luge was so fun. It’s basically racing but powered by gravity and is incredible. On the skyline Rotorua, there are amazing shops and cafes. I would love to go again.

Visited Skyline Rotorua Luge in September 2025 and it was such an amazing and fun experience for the whole family! The adventure starts with a scenic gondola ride up the hill, offering stunning panoramic views of Rotorua city, the lake and surrounding forest. Once at the top, the luge tracks are where the real excitement begins! The staff were friendly, helpful and ensured safety at all times, which made the experience enjoyable and stress-free. Everything was well-organized, from getting helmets to boarding the chairlift back up for more rides. We visited in early spring and the weather was perfect, cool air, clear skies and fewer crowds. After our luge rides, we stopped at the café to enjoy the view before heading down. Skyline Rotorua Luge is an absolute must-do activity, fun, safe and unforgettable. Perfect for all ages!
Raihah R — Google review
Absolutely amazing, my son and I had so much fun and the restaurant was great, even though I didn't realise from web research that it was a buffet! The buffet was top notch, restaurant quality food. We bought extra luge tickets we enjoyed it so much, and they allowed us to come back to complete our adventure pass activities after the weather stopped us doing the skyswing and skyline, but we had great fun luge-ing all day in the rain! Luge'd again when it was dry and it was still fun but we were used to drifting around the corners in the rain and going faster, so don't let bad weather put you off! We're returning again in 3 weeks! (Sorry, all other photos had my son and I don't want to post him online!)
Geena C — Google review
Great experience and the restaurant has nice buffet. Views are spectacular from skyline Gonzalez while watching the luge rides and mountain biking going down the hill. Love the novelty and souvenir shops too. Best part is meeting new people to converse with.
Zac Z — Google review
Most probably the highlight of our NZ trip! Our family (2 adults, 18 yo + 16 yo) bought the Gondola + Zipline + 5 Luge Rides Package. If there was a similar package but with 10 luge rides instead I would suggest you purchase that - it was bloody fantastic! The zipline was quick and thrilling, but the best part of our day was the luge rides. Cannot recommend this highly enough! We also had coffee and pastries from the cafe, was delicious, fresh and warm!
Elanya H — Google review
Went to try Gondola and ended up doing the luge too. So much fun! Wish we had more time to do luge but we had a tour booked after. But, overall was amazing!!
Kat B — Google review
We loved our day at Skyline Rotarua! The Gondola up was lots of fun and we spotted some cats and rabbits below, which my 4yo loved. The views from the top were breathtaking, and the luge was lots of fun - great for all ages and you could either take it slow and scenic or go for a fast, thrilling ride. We were disappointed that only 3 of the tracks were in operation when we arrived, yet ticket prices were not discounted and we missed out on the dinosaur track which I'd told my daughter about. Loved by all in our group though! Lunch was also nice, not too expensive and we even enjoyed and an ice cream overlooking the view. You're also able to hire a locker for I think $6 which was convenient as we had a backpack.

Mitai Maori Village, located just a short drive from Rotorua's center, offers an immersive experience in Maori culture and tradition. Visitors can enjoy a guided bush walk, cultural performances featuring traditional dress, ancient warrior canoe paddling down the Wai-o-whiro stream, displays of weaponry and combat, as well as graceful poi dances. The village also provides insight into daily activities and rituals of local tribes and showcases the use of indigenous plants for medicinal purposes.
Reviewing as a whole experience. The host spoke very well and really explained a lot about the Maori culture. I really like the part where we walk in the dark to see the canoes. The greeting by the family and the show. It was the first time I tried a proper traditional hangi from a Maori village and there was a big spread of food. Out of them, I like the beef stew, mussels and the spinach. We even got to see a lot of glowworms at the end of the experience. Definitely a worthy experience.
Wilson S — Google review
As a local to Rotorua The Mitai Māori Village was a captivating journey into the heart of Māori culture and a pleasure to experience for the first time, a 10/10 experience offering an unforgettable blend of natural beauty and rich tradition. You embark on a guided tour through a lush, immersive forest, where the hauntingly beautiful Māori calls echo through the trees, creating an ambiance of curiosity. The biggest highlight was witnessing a tribe of Māori performers navigating a traditional canoe along the freshwater stream, a display of both strength and grace. The experience is further enriched by a delicious traditional Māori Hangi buffet, featuring foods (chicken / lamb / stuffing / potato & sweet potato) cooked in the earth, as well as delectable side dishes (including potato bake / seafood chowder / garlic butter mussels / prawns & fried bread to name a few). The evening crescendoed with a powerful live haka, where the intensity of the Māori performers coupled with their cultural weapons display truely brought the performance to life. The village offered an intimate setting for educational purpose, including a brief Q&A session from staff (this is the only area I believe required some attention as a few of the answers seemed a little vague and sometimes were answered quite abruptly - but this is just me being super critical). To conclude the night, we were treated to a magical night tour of the glow worms, providing a serene and enchanting finale to a truly immersive cultural experience.
Kylie M — Google review
It was a meaningful cultural experience! The performance was truly impressive🫨 I was fully immersed in their storytelling and singing. The food was decent, but the highlight was definitely the amazing cultural show and atmosphere💯 Plus, it was great to meet and connect with people from all around the world.
Zhi K — Google review
This is not an intimate, small group-size cultural exchange. Having said that, the host and performers were enthusiastic and both the walks and the show were educational and not without humor. The Q&A before the evening walk is obviously dependent on the quality of the questions, but in general I like the idea. The walk after had a bunch of glowworms so not something you want to miss out on. In spite of a large crowd, we had an enjoyable evening with decent food.
Paul J — Google review
Very cool cultural experience. I love learning the history and culture of different people around the world. It's really wonderful how the Maori tribe invites outsiders to experience their traditional way of life. Really loved the Hangi feast. Wish I had saved room for more Pavlova.

I booked for myself and my two teenage kids, and I have to admit I almost didn’t because I thought it was a bit expensive — plus, my son is a fussy eater. But let me tell you… it was 1000% worth it! We had the most amazing night. There wasn’t a single thing we didn’t love — the educational experience, the food, the singing and dancing, and the meaning behind it all were just incredible. The food was delicious — even my son, the fussy one, ate more than anyone! If you’re thinking about going, just book it — you won’t be disappointed. 10 out of 10!

Food was good, performance was good, experience was good. There is a big crowd so can get a bit hard to hear the host when exploring outside. But recommended if you have not been to one of these Maori Villages!

Was supper excited to try this out. We bought out tickets weeks in advance. When we got to the place we were the only two customers and the place had plenty of staff around but everyone "too busy" to operate the Shweeb machine...we felt really awkward because there was no other customers around and there was a debate of who should operate the Shweeb. Once we finally had our ride we went to check our video that was take of us while on the ride. We were disappointed to see the video came out all blurry and the camera on my Shweeb stopped working apparently, so i had no video of me. We bought the video of my partner and there was no discount on the price of the video package since i didn't get my video. The GoPro looks like it super old and the resolution is terrible! The staff looked like they didn't want to be there and they were very unhelpful. For the price of this ride i don't thinks it's worth it.

Paradise Valley Springs is a wildlife park located just 10 minutes from Rotorua, offering an up-close encounter with New Zealand's native animals, birdlife, and African Lions. Visitors can hand-feed sociable farm animals like alpacas, emus, and sheep throughout the day. The park features cascading waterfalls and a 20-ft.-high treetop boardwalk for stunning views.
Awesome park and wildlife park. Was great to see the feeding of the lions and patting the cubs. Animals all well looked after. Very knowledgeable staff. Reasonably priced. Although the line to pat the cubs was huge, waited an hour, patience was key. Important to be quiet when approaching the cub area as loud noises scare them. You can feed the animals and see some historical sites along the boardwalk. Well maintained.

What a wonderful place hidden away in a beautiful setting. Patting the lion cubs was truly memorable and watching the lions being feed was real entertainment for us all. This kids loved every minute and they really enjoyed getting to feed the kea and watching them so closely. Highly recommended for families.

Lovely place to take kids. They had a free wheelchair so I could also enjoy. Animals were lovely and great to be able to feed and pet. Definitely needs directions to get there. Plenty of parking. Not to busy when we went on Saturday

I’ve been to quite a few attractions like this and it’s the best one so far. The park is big and full of different kinds of animals. It’s also very clean and well planned out. Not gonna lie, I thought it was quite expensive. However, I found it worth it as I was exploring the place. You can tell the animals are all well taken care of. It’s a nice day activity for all different ages. It’s cool we get to feed the animals for $2! It was cool getting the chance to pet the lion cubs! Definitely worth queuing for. My favourite one is the donkey, he’s definitely a photogenic one.

A beautiful natural wildlife park with plenty of animals to keep you entertained, especially ducks! You can feed some of the animals and if you arrive at certain times you may get to pat the Lion cubs. We were in and out within the hour, but you could spend a whole day here, great for children and adults alike!
JD — Google review
First time visiting here. Not too busy even on a school holiday. There was a long line to pat the lion cubs. Awesome experience for the kids. They also sell feeds for the ducks, trouts and other animals. Very interactive and not too complicated. We all enjoyed the experience.

Visiting from Australia. This place is wonderful. By far the best and most beautiful wildlife park I have ever been to. Feeding the animals and getting up close to everything was amazing. Staff were so friendly and knowledgeable. Thank you for the most incredible day.

Wow this place is truly special. We took our toddler and he had a blast running around after the ducks (which are everywhere). Personally I loved the treetops walk and the feeling of being amongst nature. A bit weird to see lions in NZ and I did not need the experience of patting their cubs. Doesn’t sound very ethical but I’m not a zookeeper

When visiting Rotorua, also known as Te Rotorua nui ā Kahumatamomoe, you'll find a place that is both beautiful and culturally rich. The town is surrounded by around 15 lakes, with the largest being Lake Rotorua. This sunny lake offers picturesque scenery and opportunities for watersports. In addition to its natural beauty, Rotorua holds great significance in Maori history and tradition.
Beautiful lake with a golden sunrise. Black swans and many other birds can be seen in an around the lake. The lake is pretty big and can become very choppy during the winds and rains, on other days the lake is calm and serene.

Lake Rotorua is the second largest lake in the North Island of New Zealand by surface area, and covers 79.8 km with a depth of only 10 metres it is considerably smaller than nearby Lake Tarawera in terms of volume of water. Lake Rotorua is known for trout fishing, swimming, boating, Canoeing, Mokoia Island, relaxing public and private lake areas with various access points. This lake also links to other nearby lakes through channel accessibility. Great for morning and afternoon walks or running, cycling etc There are nearby eateries bound to satisfy different diet requirements along side a selection of accommodation.

When visiting the North Island, make sure to include a trip to Hell's Gate Geothermal Reserve and Mud Spa in your itinerary. This hot-springs resort offers a unique experience with its boiling hot pools and erupting waters. The 50-acre reserve features some of the most active geothermal activity in the Southern Hemisphere, including the scorching Kakahi Falls and the steamy Inferno area with its bubbling mud reaching temperatures of up to 100 degrees Celsius.
I went Hells Gate with my family, and took the full experience. Started with the walk, and used the 10:30 guided tour which is included with the experience. The tour was fantastic and the guide was knowledgeable on the cultural significance of the place. It lasted around 2 hours, but it went by quickly. We then did the mud spa experience, and to all who say that it is smelly - well not so much. It is mild and fairly bearable. Then we went for the wood carving experience, which was fun. They sealed the wood with varnish so that we could bring it back home. The cafe had good food as well, but I did not have a great experience with the coffee. Overall it was a great experience for the whole family. We would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Rotorua.
Chirag B — Google review
We only did the walk so this is not a review of the hot baths / mud baths. Was told it was an hour walk through the loop and that it was the most active area in Rotorua. The stroll only took 40 min and there was very little variation in what you could see. The Māori Living Village has a lot more to see. The wood carving experience at end was good.
Steve K — Google review
Hell's Gate is definitely a unique and interesting experience if visiting Rotorua. I did the self guided tour and took my time walking around the boardwalks. It's amazing the different environment that is here with the many mud pits bubbling away. The smell can be a bit harsh at points with all the sulfur but it's interesting to imagine what it would have been like way back before British contact and how the Maori lived in the area. The wood carving at the end is a nice little touch, something I might actually give a go with in the future as a hobby having enjoyed carving a little kiwi design. Definitely would recommend to check out Hell's Gate if you're in the area.
Amber P — Google review
Best experience ever! It was a 40th birthday present for my husband and he really enjoyed it. He said it was the best thing he ever did! The mud bath is for 20 minutes only but the spas and spring is for the whole day which was definitely worth it. My kids enjoyed the spa so much and we are planning a trip back soon.
Shobia S — Google review
Really enjoyed the mud spa, the sulphur bath is not nearly as special! We went for a walk after but didn’t see much activity, could do without. Still recommended but probably won’t be rushing back anytime soon!

We absolutely loved Hells Gate. It is well worth coming for the live tour at 10.30. The place is amazing with lots of hot pools and mud baths. The staff are so friendly and welcoming. It is very interesting to learn more about Māori culture. There is also a lovely cafe. You can rent swimwear and towels for $5 which is recommended due to the minerals in the water/mud.
Leenane J — Google review
Had an awesome time at Hell’s Gate! The geothermal walk was super interesting – bubbling mud, steam vents, and some seriously cool scenery. Big shout out to our guide who, even though it was only her second tour, absolutely nailed it. She explained everything in a really fun and easy-to-understand way, which made it even more enjoyable. The mud bath was such a relaxing experience. The only downside was that we didn’t have enough time to really soak it all in because of other plans – would’ve loved to stay longer! We also got to try wood carving, which was a fun and creative add-on. All the staff were so cheerful and helpful, which made the whole vibe feel really welcoming. Highly recommend checking it out if you’re in the area – it’s a great mix of nature, culture, and chill time!

a lovely muddy experience, lots of fun. Mineral baths were a relaxing end to the session. The hire of swimwear & towels was abonus as didnt have to worry about the washing or wet swimwear while travelling, and also the mud is hard to remove apparantly

These tubs are big enough for up to six people and are filled with fresh water, providing a secluded and tranquil soak amidst natural greenery and tree ferns.
So glad we went here, both my husband and I enjoyed it very much. Greeted by lovely staff and prompt process done so we could order drinks and change to head off to our tub. Simple cafe foods available. The entire space has a lovely atmosphere. Tubs have a great view of the lush, green bush to watch the bird life while you enjoy your relaxing hot tub. There are cold baths available nearby that you can use during your time. Tubs are private but you can hear others nearby. 3x showers available (no doors, semi-private) Ample parking spaces. Located next to a bike track. Would definitely visit again and highly recommend.

Our hot tub experience in Rotorua was amazing! We had 45 minutes to relax, and it was so peaceful that we could hear the birds while enjoying the view of the trees in the background. We also ordered drinks and tried the ice plunge — such a refreshing and unique experience. Overall, so far so good!

I had such a relaxing experience here. The private setting made it feel peaceful and secluded, surrounded by beautiful native bush and the sound of birds. The tubs are well maintained, clean, and perfectly heated which made it easy to just sit back and unwind. I really liked the booking system too, as it kept everything smooth and stress-free. The staff were welcoming and friendly, making sure everything was ready for me before I arrived. It’s an ideal spot whether you’re looking for some quiet time alone, a romantic escape, or just a unique way to enjoy Rotorua’s geothermal charm. Highly recommend if you’re visiting the area and want something special that combines relaxation with a real connection to nature.

A beautiful setting, perfect for a bit of private relaxation. The building is nicely designed both inside and out - with lockers, showers, and even a storage box right next to your tub (there’s also a parasol in case of light rain). You can order a drink directly to the hot tub, which is a great touch. We had our slot booked around dusk, so we could watch the forest gradually light up around us. Highly recommended, especially for couples.

Such an amazing tucked away gem, hidden amongst the beautiful nature. Absolutely loved it. From our own little hot tub to the cold plunge tub. Ordered drinks as we arrived and our drinks were delivered to our tub, nice changing rooms with showers. Can hire towels if needed and parking is good.

Quite pricey but it’s definitely worth it. I love going to hot pools and having privacy is such a huge plus. The tub, water, and the area is clean. The attendants were attentive and quick. When it gets too hot, the cold plunge was near. Very refreshing. It’s quite an instagrammable place. You shouldn’t be missing out on this when visiting Rotorua.

We received a warm reception from the hospitable staff. The experience of being in harmony with nature was fantastic, with a pool at an optimal temperature and a short distance from the reception. The shower facilities were of a high standard, and the food and drinks were a fitting conclusion to our stay.

Very zen pool experience! Tubs are spacious and fit up to 6 people. We had tub number 11 the 'toastie frog' and it was wonderfully warm-almost too warm at times. The cold plunge was a lifesaver and alternating between the two was refreshing. 45mins is perfect and long enough to soak without feeling rushed, though I was still bummed when the timer went off! Overall, a great little treat.

Te Pa Tu - The Gathering Place is a captivating cultural experience that immerses visitors in the rich traditions of the Maori people. Nestled within a stunning forest village surrounded by majestic Tawa trees, this attraction offers an enchanting evening filled with music, dance, and delicious seasonal cuisine known as kai. As you gather around blazing bonfires in a natural amphitheater, you'll be treated to performances that change with each season according to the maramataka, or Maori lunar calendar.
This experience was great! The village was beautiful in the dusk with soft rain and log fires burning outside little huts where we were taught some traditional Maori activities from this tribe. The whole thing was run by members of an extended family who were both funny and charming. The musical performances were of a very high standard and the feast was absolutely delicious ( and I am very particular about my food! ) - , excellent canapes, mussels, whitebait fritters, warm rolls with truffle butter, confi duck with watercress and orange salad, hanging cooked lamb, wagyu short rib, root veg. 3 little desserts each. Definitely the best food I've had in 5 weeks in N Z. Fun bus ride each way. Yes, it's touristy but they are open about this, wanting to share their culture with us and they created a very warm, welcoming and informative experience.

I’ve visited here twice - once in 2019 and again this month. I was disappointed the first time - most of those leading the tour didn’t seem like they wanted to be there, and it felt a bit half hearted. I also felt a little like I was tolerated, not welcomed, and sensed an arrogance from some people we encountered. This time was totally different. There was an amazing sense of warmth in the family’s welcome, and I sensed an incredible pride in their effort to show the world their culture. Their performance was the best I have seen anywhere (in any culture) - boy this family can sing! They are all incredibly friendly , engaging and intelligent. The food was stunning - a huge improvement over my last visit. I learned from our table host, Waitangi, that her father, the chief, took over after Covid. He has created something special here now, and is doing an amazing job as not only chief and host, but as a father - his children were incredibly gracious, welcoming and brilliant hosts as well as outstanding performers. Fantastic and very emotional experience. A must do when visiting Rotorua.

No matter what I write, I won’t be able to truly express how much I enjoyed being here. This place is a cultural institute, school, and mini village dedicated to introducing visitors to the Māori people — the indigenous people of New Zealand. It’s a large venue that requires prior booking. The staff warmly welcome you and explain the Māori culture, followed by a traditional performance featuring expressive movements and chanting that carry deep meaning. Then, the team takes you on a tour near the hot volcanic rocks, ending with a luxurious international buffet dinner that includes all types of meats, chicken, seafood, desserts, and ice cream. This center is considered one of the top tourist attractions when visiting Rotorua.

This was an amazing experience! A great introduction to Maori culture and history. They make it a fun process and include guests in the experience. From the time they picked us up on the bus to the drop off, it was high energy and a great time! Thank you Sam for starting it off and to Dennis for finishing it on a high point!!! Great performers! Amazing voices! All the performers did a great job but the family with Emerson, Elisa, their brother and uncle were so strong together.... beautiful!!! The food was wonderful!!! Plenty to eat, great variety and beautifully presented! My whole family loved it! Would do this again for sure! Well worth the money!!!!

Maybe because iit was raining something in the tour was cut short. More like going to a broadway production. Enjoyable but not the cultural exposure our guide had suggested. After seeing natural geysers in Iceland this looked like a baking soda school project. Very crowded and unorganized. Definitely not a spiritual experience. Reading your reply surprises me that you are not concerned that it was not a cultural experience for me or most in our group. We had one on one experiences that were inspiring. Yours was more entertainment. Which would be fine if we had not been mislead by our guide that it would give us more of the cultural experience we had already. Again. It appears our tour was shortened because of rain. Giving it the benefit of the doubt that there is usually more content. Luckily I didn't have any expectations for the advertised geyser.

I have had the absolute joy of experiencing Te Pā Tū twice. The first time, I thought it to be so good, that I planned my family vacation around coming back, so that they too, could bare witness to Te Pā Tū's incredible performances, games and kai (food). The passion of the staff and artists is infectious and I found myself grinning ear to ear both times. Te Pā Tū feels like a big family that welcome you with open arms. I very much enjoyed participating in traditional Māori games and it was wonderful to see everyone get involved. Big Baz, you are a talented musician, people should pay just to simply hear you sing. Tiaana, as always, thank you for being a wonderful host. I count down the days until I am back on the doorsteps of Te Pā Tū. Kia ora!

We were picked up from our hotel by a shuttle and then continued by bus to the Maori village. We were welcomed with a ceremony. There were various stations where we spent 10-15 minutes learning about Maori culture. There were also canapés, which were very tasty. After finishing the stations, we were led to a foyer with a small stage. The things we learned at the stations were presented by our hosts in the "right way". The Haka was incredibly captivating. It's amazing how strong and overwhelming individual voices can be. Afterwards, we were invited to take our seats in a large hall and were served dinner. We were entertained very nicely at the end, with our hosts singing songs from different countries. A truly unforgettable experience. It was one of the best cultural experiences we've ever had. A must-do when visiting Rotorua. A truly enriching experience for broadening your horizons about other cultures.

The Buried Village of Te Wairoa is an archaeological site that offers guided tours through an excavated village buried by the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera. It provides insight into the Pink and White Terraces' role in New Zealand's tourism economy and the formalization of guiding, led by local bilingual Maori women. The site showcases integrated Maori and European cultures during a crucial phase in the country's social development.
Awesome place to visit. I would recommend doing the vr experience. That was awesome. Has glues set out for the kids to keep them engaged while walking around looking at all of the artifacts and excavation of the burial sites. Some awesome sites and really good info. Scenic views and even a small walk to a wonderful waterfall. Has a museum and cafe, small play area and shop. Plenty of parking.

I wouldn't put it on the "must do" list. The information inside the museum is good and thorough however outside is run down and lacking maintenance. Not worth the $25/30 per person. We arrived just before closing so didn't go into the coffee shop. The walk down to the waterfall was really good. Be careful as it is very steep but a well maintained path with hand rails. Give yourself around an hour to explore it all and to do the waterfall walk.

Just 20 minutes from Rotorua, the Buried Village of Te Wairoa is a moving and fascinating glimpse into the 1886 Mount Tarawera eruption. As a nurse and local, I found the history and personal stories especially powerful. The museum and excavated sites are well set up, and the short bush walk to the waterfall adds a peaceful touch—great if you’re bringing a toddler. It’s family-friendly, informative, and a nice mix of culture, nature, and history. Definitely worth a visit for locals and visitors alike.

Very interesting and educational. I loved reading all about the times leading up to the volcano eruptions. Learnt a lot that I didn't know prior to going. I went with 2 young children, but due to the treasure hunt they were immersed in the experience. The waterfall was the absolute highlight. Highly recommend. Loved traveling back in time, if for a moment.

A once-prosperous village that is destroyed by natural disasters. It's amazing to see this place has turned into a natural primary forest today. Walking along the trail that winds through the remnants offers an informative glimpse into its past. It's difficult to fully grasp the emotions and experiences of those who lived through the catastrophe. The trail could last about an hour. There is a preferred detour nesr the end of the trial that takes you the waterfall. It is beautiful to see the water gashing down. Refreshing and rejuvenating. 😍

Wingspan National Bird of Prey Centre, located just outside Rotorua township, is a haven for New Zealand birds of prey such as the karearea (New Zealand falcon), kahu (Australasian harrier), ruru (morepork), and Australian barn owl. Visitors can witness these magnificent birds in action during flying displays and even have the chance to hold them.
Had heard great things and finally got to visit Wingspan on 23.03.25. What an absolutely incredible experience. All the staff were so knowledgeable and friendly, the birds just amazing. We were blessed to have an off script experience with a juvenile female Karearea repeatedly interrupting the show. Had the whole audience on the edge of our seats. The staffs professionalism even during this challenge was amazing and their passion for the species was evident by their response. Great bang for your buck. Also couldn't help buying from the gift shop. Would highly recommend for any nature lover.

I visited wingspan upon referral by the Mountagatori (mountain sanctuary) staff. This was excellent, watching a falconry show, seeing the education, research, rehabilitation done there for birds of prey. They have a great aviary that housed endemic Morepork, and falcon, along with some non invasive self introduced birds. Some of which demonstrated there great hunting skills

Hands down the best experience I have had! As a Kiwi, this was an incredibly spiritual experience. To be in the presence of the karearea was an honour; to have such an up close, personal encounter is unheard off. My 8YO nephew proclaimed it was "better than the jet boat ride!" The team were incredible and I 10/10 recommend this experience!

We loved the opportunity to learn about the NZ Falcon. What an amazing job you all do and the meet and greet up close with the Falcon is not to be missed. All proceeds go to the conservation of the magical birds so please go. Arrive early to sit in the front middle for best spot!

Today, we visited Wingspan after someone working at Sanctuary Mountain (a beautiful ecological preserve and trust I will also review in a minute!) recommended it to us. The people who run this place LOVE the work they do and the creatures they do it for. It is hard to find if you aren't searching for it, and that's probably good for the birds, but not for business! They have a beautiful aviary where we were able to see an unreleasable morepork owl. We had only heard them at night. Two incredibly talented falconers showed off the skills of their birds for the audience while educating us about why conservation is so important and how their efforts help these animals. Highly recommend this experience to anyone interested in birds of prey and conservation.

If you are looking for an educational experience and to do some good for bird of prey conservation, I can't recommend Wingspan enough! You can spot Black swans, ducks, cormorants and eels as you walk around the springs. Worth the visit.

Absolutely stunning spot – one of the most beautiful places I’ve visited in Aotearoa. The water at Hamurana Springs is crystal clear and has this almost otherworldly blue-green glow. Even though it was cold during the day (winter visit!), the walk was peaceful and refreshing – such a great option for a date, a relaxed family outing, or showing off the beauty of NZ to visitors from overseas. It’s $18 per adult, and you pay at the golf course entrance – the staff there were incredibly friendly and welcoming. The track itself is easy to walk and well maintained, winding through towering redwoods and native bush, with plenty of places to stop and take it all in. Definitely a hidden gem worth visiting!

What a gorgeous course! We played a round for my husband’s birthday and both of us couldn’t stop saying how amazing it was. We saw so many unique birds and deer while playing and the course has a wonderful design to it! Their merchandise is also worth checking out, their logo is perfect!

On the day of our visit, the weather wasn’t really on our side – but it turned out not to be a problem at all. Marnie, with his great energy, explained everything clearly and concisely before we set off on the walk. We actually ended up spending about half an hour longer than estimated, simply because we enjoyed it so much. Along the way, we spotted many black teals and swans, as well as cormorants and other interesting birds. The path also takes you through a beautiful redwood forest, which made the experience even more special. I understand it may not be for everyone, but I believe anyone who appreciates nature will find the entrance fee well worth it.

Such a beautiful place to visit, beautiful crystal clear water, green sceneries and the walk through the massive pine trees was just mesmerising. Definitely worth to visit🫶🏼 we also managed to get some really cool pics. Also if you fancy a game of golf it’s just around the corner. Price per adult through Bookme was $13.

This is a must do, the walk is magical and mystically time altering. It felt like we were waiting for robinhood to jump out of the trees or samurai to ride past. Truly felt like being on another planet amongst the trees and clear water. Staff at the golf club (where you start the walk) is lovely and so helpful. Do the drive out to this place you will not be disappointed.

Gorgeous walk around the springs and through the beautiful big redwoods! So many swans ducks and some geese with little babies. The rosellas in the Redwoods are just delightful to see and hear as well. Stunning springs that are a little surreal they are so clear and beautiful.

Lake Tarawera is a must-visit destination in the stunning lakes district near Rotorua, New Zealand. While its beach may be small, there's a lovely cafe by the water's edge. For a more remote and quieter experience, consider visiting Lake Okataina, which offers great swimming and a jetty for jumping off.
This place blew my mind... apparently we got lucky with the lack of crowds mid week and no wind. Stayed at a great AirBnB with views from above and were lucky enough to get taken to some incredible thermal hot spots on the lake.

So much fun for all ages! Plenty of changing rooms with heaters, cubbies to store your stuff. A quick, easy ride to the top, and the views from the top are incredible. The ride down is a sloshy thrill, and the hot tubs at the bottom are incredibly relaxing. We went first thing Sunday morning during shoulders season and had the place to ourselves. Can’t wait to come back!

Bucket List Must Do in Rotorua. I did mine on a drizzly cloudy Monday. Weather was late autumn so no chance of sunny day! Very memorable as my 58th birthday touring North & South Islands doing my bucket list adrenaline activities. The hot tub, dry sauna, warm water inside balloon made the experience u forgettable !!!!!

So much fun! We only had time to do the Mega track but it was a blast. The sidewinder would have been a great track too. Next time for sure. The staff is so friendly and helpful. There are saunas and hot tubs to keep you warm. The changing rooms are private and have heaters. Pro tip-bring a waterproof case for your phone to take pictures from the top.

Absolutely loved our experience! We were a group from Auckland who had stayed over night in Rotorua and did some team bonding on the Tuesday. The team who looked after us were nothing but amazing and eased some nerves along the way. The hot tubs and saunas before and after the zorb 👌
Ashley T — Google review
Super great experience! This is truly something unique that is definitely worth a try. Everyone says it's like a waterslide but its definitely more chaotic than that! I went by myself on the first hill and didn't really like it at all and was worried that the rest of the day was going to be long because we'd paid for all 4 rides but I rode with my sister on the next one and had an ABSOLUTE BLAST! On the 3rd hill we put 3 of us in one and it was also super fun. And I didn't care for the last hill as much (had 2 riders), I think our ball maybe had a little too much water in it. The staff are super excellent and friendly and the facilities are nice and clean. I appreciated the hot tubs everywhere. Overall, I'd super recommend going but definitely bring another person with you. The zorbs are not fun by yourself. If I went again, I think I'd purchase 2-3 rides instead of 4 and I'd skip out on the Mega track.

Nestled on the shores of Lake Rotorua, Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa offers two distinct areas for visitors to unwind and revitalize. The spa is culturally curated by Ngati Whakaue, offering a Restorative Journey at Wai Whakaora and an exclusive tranquil Sanctuary at Ahuru Mowai. Guests can indulge in a range of experiences, from rainforest showers and hot pools with stunning lake views to mud baths and steam rooms.
The sanctuary retreat was amazing - 3 pools to choose from, 2 are geothermal and heated up to 40 degrees. Looks out towards the lakefront. Then private geothermal bath where you can relax in your own tub with a platter & drink of your choice. You also get some mud to mask yourself with - so fun!, some sea salt & tea bag to add to your bath. Room also has shower with body wash, shampoo & conditioner. Then end your day with wellness massage. The interiors of the spa are gorgeous as well. Highly recommend.

Absolutely stunning experience at Wai Ariki hot springs. First visit was a beautiful bathing experience. Well worth the price and a beautiful experience. Absolutely spoilt myself with my next visit. Had a massage and facial, one of the best I have had in my life. Mokoia was my therapist and she was very talented.

Best experience ever! Blown away by the staff and hospitality. Loved the theatre and experience of the ice room and stream. Can't wait to come back. I am nervous about spa visits as they are well out of my comfort zone. Fortunately I received a warm welcome and such genuine kindness upon entering, diminishing all my concerns. I am incredibly grateful for this cultural experience and found it very grounding.

A fabulous experience and a must for any wellness oriented guests visiting Rotorua! We selected the Journey which is two hours and includes everything hot and cold and even a mud session!!! The town or destination of Rotorua is famous for their hot springs and at Wai Ariki the traditional baths have been incorporated into the water experience. The building is stunning and service is delivered with passion as the staff explain each experience and how the Māori culture has been introduced to the philosophy of the hot springs. A minor change is to add signs in the saunas so visitors know to splash water on the heating element as often the saunas were not hot enough…..but that is a simple fix!! Enjoy your experience and make sure you BOOK in advance ….. as there are limited sessions but that is the beauty so each guest has time to relax and enjoy the warm waters or saunas!! Enjoy

We had booked online in advance the one hour bathing journey and had a wonderful time. Our checkin was smooth with a Māori introduction before entering the five pools which including hot, cold and jets. All were great and very relaxing. What a wonderful place this is and everything felt very new and modern. We visited the cafe afterwards and enjoyed some hot drinks and some cakes. All in all a great start to our day of exploring Rotorua and highly recommended.

First off this place looks amazing. The entrance alone had an experience unto itself. The attention to detail drew you in and you found yourself looking everywhere all at once to take it all in. Reception greeted our party of 3 with a friendly "Kia ora" and informed us that we would be taken on a guided tour first, to explain all the different sections to the Restorative Journey. OH MY GOSH this was more than I ever could've imagined. From the sensory shower, to the saunas, ice buckets, 3 different temperature pools, an ice plunge pool, an aromatherapy pool, mud room and a steam room. We were definitely spoilt for choice. The staff were very diligent with keeping areas clean and tidy at all times as well as the mud area continuously reset with clean lounges and mud bowls. We were lucky to have experienced the Muscle Massage and was well informed and cared for with robes, towels and slippers. We were offered a variety of tea to choose from which was delicious. We continued with the Restorative Journey and when it was time we were called to begin our massage. They gave us plenty of time to freshen up before hand. I was greeted and introduced to Elena the masseur who was friendly, courteous and showed exceptional skill. I think I was very lucky to have had someone with her experience. The massage was amazing, I felt so relaxed and rejuvenated at the end. We were taken to a lounge area, offered tea and a throw blanket placed over our legs while looking out over Lake Rotorua. The whole experience was amazing. From start to finish definitely a 10/10 from my party of 3. So thank you to all the staff that worked on Saturday 25th October 2025 because you ALL had a hand in making this a special moment for us.

Do the Restorative Journey. Just do it. It is worth every penny and was a truly phenomenal experience. Every step was magical and it was really hard to move through the process because I did not want it to end. 🥰 The Cold water bucket and the Hay sauna were favorites, as well as the cold plunge/thermal pool combo in the beautiful open area to the Lake. The mud mask, and steam room were relaxing and left me feeling light and refreshed. After, you can shower, change, and ready yourself for the day with complementary items and blow dryers in the locker room. I would give it so many more stars if I could. We loved it so much we are returning after we visit Hell's Gate today.

If you're seeking an exhilarating adventure, look no further than New Zealand Mountain Biking in Rotorua. Nestled at the edge of the iconic Whakarewarewa Redwood Forest, this hub offers access to one of the most extensive mountain biking trail networks in the country. With nearly 200 kilometers of expertly crafted trails, there's something for everyone—from novices to seasoned downhill riders.
If I could give 6 out of 5 stars I would! Jaime w/New Zealand Mountain Biking was an amazing guide full of an in depth knowledge of all the trails we rode! My wife and I could have simply tried our best to navigate the trails in Rotorua but with Jaime’s help we were able to have a stress free epic adventure navigating a wide variety of trails plus as a bonus, he put up with my endless questions about the area. If you looking for a guide, stop looking and hire Jaime!

I had an absolutely incredible day riding the world-class trails of the Whakarewarewa forest with New Zealand Mountain Biking. Jamie tailored the ride perfectly to my ability level, sharing great tips on technique while making sure I felt confident and safe. His knowledge of the trails and local insight added so much to the adventure. The guided shuttle service made everything effortless. It was great to have maximum time on the trails without having to worry about logistics, and our driver Peter had some great stories about the history of the trail network. I can’t recommend this experience highly enough, and hope I’m able to make another trip here sometime in the future!

Doing a couple of coaching sessions with NZ Mountain Biking has absolutely transformed my riding and has taken me from a scared, reluctant rider trying to keep up with my kids to becoming a confident rider loving Grade 4 trails and starting to think about the next challenge! Jamie's coaching style is unique in that he takes you where you are at and knows exactly what you need to progress and meet your own goals. Most of all he keeps the learning highly personalised and super fun!

We booked 4 days of private guided tours with Jamie and it was incredible. We rode Whakarewarewa Forest, Maunga Kākaramea and did a heli shuttle ride around the Kaimanawa Range. All four days were amazing, packed with some of the best riding this area has to offer. Jamie works with you to tailor the trip according to your riding skills and goes above and beyond to make sure you’re having heaps of fun. I would definitely recommend him and his company!

Lake Rotoiti, situated about 25.2 kilometers from Rotorua near Okere Falls, is a stunning lake offering various activities such as hiking trails, trout fishing, and water skiing. The northern shore features a dock perfect for jumping into the clear waters while the southern shore is home to the beautiful Manupirua Thermal Springs. Visitors can access these springs by boat and enjoy the mineral-rich waters amidst picturesque surroundings.
The full name of Lake Rotoiti is Te Rotoiti-kite-a-Īhenga, which in Māori means "The Small Lake Discovered By Īhenga" (the Māori explorer also credited with discovering Lake Rotorua) 👀 Legend says that the lake was named as such because when Ihenga first saw it, he was only able to see a small part of it and thought the lake was a lot smaller 🤔 It actually has a depth of 100m in places, is 3.5km wide, 15km long, and stretches over 35sqkm 😲 The Rotorua Te Arawa Lakes Programme was established to purify and protect the water 💧 They did a great job, as the water is crystal clear. The water felt so refreshing! If it weren't so cold 🥶 I would have absolutely dived straight in 😍

Pohutu Geyser, located in the Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley of Rotorua, New Zealand, is the largest and most famous geyser in the Southern Hemisphere. With up to 20 daily eruptions that shoot steam as high as 30 meters into the air, it's a sight to behold.
The Geyser seems to erupt every 20-22 minutes pretty much on schedule. You are almost guaranteed to be there for at least one eruption. We had a second visit due to the nature of our tour and saw an evening eruption (along with hot chocolate). There is a nearby seating area but steam is escaping from beneath them so be wary of where you put your hands (I seared one of my fingers before I realized what was happening). The steam itself, if it reaches you, has cooled by the time it gets to the barrier. This entire area is a demonstration of the fact Rotorua is on top of a massive Caldera in a volcanically active zone.
Graham T — Google review
Really was impressed with the Maori culture and traditions. Had read about volcano in school it's first time in 42 years of my life to visit a active volcano and hot springs. Will suggest to book the guide which is only 20$ difference from pack 1 guided red track and pack 3 yellow self walk trail. Git to tastes the hot spring water cooked corn really felt rich tastes and it was really tasted good. Guide was really superb and her way of explaining welcome to MY HOME. Lived it.
Physiotherapist ط — Google review
Awesome experience. It was really busy though and you can only do guided tours so when the guide speaks other people talk over them so you miss a lot of information. I got lots of photos. I'm kiwi and I found it very touristy in terms of behaviour of others. My wife is Aussie and she loved it. She was totally impressed and would have enjoyed it more if the other tour people understood that in NZ you don't push in front of others and talk over guides. The gift shop has awesome stuff and great prices. Use the toilets inside the complex outside ones are paru.
GEE — Google review
We were at the park when the geyser erupted and it was wonderful. Give yourself plenty of time in the park and make sure you can go back to the geyser after your formal tour has finished. Your formal tour is fixed to a schedule and the geysers are not. So if you want to be sure you see them erupting, allow three hours for your total time in the park.
Graham R — Google review
You have to book for a tour which is about 30 mins and quite informative although our guide didn't fully explain the geysers cycle so bear in mind you often don't see the full action during the tour. However, you can stay as long as you want to after the tour. That's when we saw the Kiwi's and the full eruption of the geyser.

The National Kiwi Hatchery in Rotorua offers a unique and educational experience for visitors. It is the largest hatchery in New Zealand and plays a crucial role in increasing the survival rate of newborn kiwi birds. The behind-the-scenes tour provides insight into the hatchery's operations, including daily health checks for chicks. Families with children will find this attraction particularly engaging, as it offers an opportunity to learn about kiwi breeding programs and observe these fascinating birds up close.
Great tour of a kiwi hatchery, probably one of the only ones open to the public jn the whole wide world! Hatchings occur from approx Sep to April (spring/summer) and from rescued Kiwi nests. Definitely worth a visit and expect large crowds during hatching season.

Excellent conservation facility. Highly recommend visiting during hatching season. Incredible staff that answered my many questions with ease. Gorgeous (but shy) kiwi birds. We were initially a little skeptical because of the location (seemingly within a super tourist farm experience), but the hatchery tickets fully support the kiwi breeding and conservation programs.

We had a fantastic visit at the National Kiwi Hatchery. The tour was informative and engaging and we were lucky enough to see adult kiwis, eggs and even newborn chicks. The staff are passionate and knowledgeable, and its great knowing our visit helps support kiwi conservation. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Rotorua. 😍

The Kiwi hatchery really is a treasure in New Zealand. They have a great mission and they have a lot to teach and show anyone that arrives. There are a few things to keep in mind. First, the parking is at the Agrodome (at least at the time of writing) and while it was easy to find parking while I went, I suspect that is not always true. Second, this is not a place you can expect to get photos of kiwi birds. They have eggs, baby birds, and some adult ones but they are light sensitive creatures and photos are not allowed for the safety of the birds. Lastly, the gift shop doesn't accept cash so make sure you have another payment method available. Definitely worth taking the tour to see and learn about one of the unique creatures of New Zealand.

Had a great time learning about kiwi conservation at the hatchery. All proceeds go toward protecting these amazing birds, so the tour tickets may be a little pricey, but it’s all for a great cause! 😊

Came here with my wife and it was an unforgettable experience. Staff were knowledgeable and friendly, the kiwis were amazing to see, and it was incredibly informative both about kiwis in general and the program itself. Really inspiring and we hope to visit other locations as well. Worth noting; the tour leaves from the Agrodome which also seems cool and has its own fairly large giftshop. There is some Kiwi Hatchery merchandise there, but we were actually a little confused by how little there was until we realized there was a dedicated gift shop on site at the hatchery that you can visit after the tour. Definitely worth waiting to get stuff at the giftshop on site at the hatchery.

We Impulsively followed the steam that we could see above the trees, which led us to Te Puia school. We paid $100 each for a tour of the school and the grounds where there is a bubbling mud pit and these spectacular geysers. There was a lot of activitiy in less than an hour. The ground was warm to touch. Our tour guide was really knowledgeable and the students that were learning carving and weaving were willing to answer our questions. At the end you are able to spend as much extra time there as you like, which we did!

It was hot, hot, hot, and smelly, but what an experience! Just seeing the geysers explode right in front of you makes the whole trip worthwhile. Mokoia Island, situated in the middle of Lake Rotorua in New Zealand, is a sacred and uninhabited land with significant cultural and ecological importance. It serves as a wildlife sanctuary for rare and endangered bird species, offering guided tours that provide opportunities to spot indigenous birds like kiwi, kokako, and saddleback.
This distinctive little island is very visible on a cloudless day from the air as one flys overhead from Wellington to Rotorua. Hot Springs are numerous around this volcanic area and it seems totally natural & not surprising that this wee island has its own hot springs. Mokoia Island is sacred to the Te Arawa people and birthplace of Tutanekai, who is one of two central characters in the famous love story legend of Tutanekai & Hinemoa. Like most love stories it ends happily!

Mokoia Island sits somewhere in the middle of Lake Rotorua. It is privately owned by a local Maori tribe, who consider the site to be quite sacred. The tiny island, which has an area of 1.35 square kilometres (0.52 square miles), is a rhyolite lava dome, with geothermal springs and hot pools abound. Mokoia Island is considered a protected bird sanctuary and, as such, is only ever open to a small number of tour groups at any given time.

The museum showcases Maori culture, the city's history, and the region's volcanic phenomena. Visitors can observe the creative process of indigenous New Zealand wood carving and view displays of pounamu (jade), whale bone, bronze, and textiles. The museum offers a wide variety of interactive exhibits including an earthquake movie.
Went here for a trip years ago and went to revisit a few months back. It's great to see that this place is still beautiful and well-kept. The outdoor flowers are gorgeous and the museum is reminiscent of a castle.

Beautiful architecture! A notice board explains that it is closed since 18 Nov 2016. After an earthquake in 2016, the building scored 19% for Seismic Assessment. Any building under 34% New Building Standard (NBS) are earthquake prone so it is closed. Restoration work has been all as well. Hopefully it will be up and running soon.

Great place for a morning and evening walk! This is one the best free and beautiful place to visit while visiting Rotorua. The whole building is fantastic, the garden around it are one the best. The city spent a lot money and time taking care of it. It’s a great a place for a morning / evening walk when you want to enjoy the quietness and beauty of the city! You could also see the lake view there, just drive a bit more.
Quinton ( — Google review
Sadly it was closed for substantial renovations. We were told that the building failed a seismic assessment after a recent earthquake but took a few yrs for the relevant parties to agree to who foots the bill. Due to re-open 2025 apparently. It’s a beautiful building from afar and up close, would love to head inside once completed, will hit it up properly next trip!

I used to have great memory inside way before google starts doing reviews. The interior was marvellous. However can’t go in at the moment and repair works will take forever! 9 years in the plan and I think it will likely to reopen sometime in 2030…… a whole generation is gone

Magnificent building structure surrounded by tulips and assorted flowers via government gardens. Best time to visit is late afternoon or early in the morning to avoid the other people crowding the place.. September to october visit was awesome to witness the tulip bloom in the gardens..

A very beautiful place in rotorua. The architecture of the museum at government gardens is simple yet beautiful European or British style. We didn't visit the museum from inside. But we did spend lots of time in the beautiful government gardens surrounding it. The gardens are beautiful and well maintained. There is a special section for roses. There are washrooms for the convenience of the tourists. Ideal location to have lots of snaps taken. A must visit in rotorua, really beautiful.👌🏼👍🏻

We had an absolutely fantastic time at Velocity Valley Rotorua! My wife, our kids (13 and 7), and I visited today, and once again, it was an experience to remember. From start to finish, the thrill of the rides and attractions kept us engaged, and the energy of the place was just incredible. What truly sets Velocity Valley apart is the amazing staff—friendly, cooperative, and always willing to help. Their positive attitude made our visit even more enjoyable. They go above and beyond to ensure guests feel comfortable and have a great time. 10 stars just for them! This was our second visit (our first was six years ago), and we can confidently say that Velocity Valley never disappoints. We’ll definitely be back again soon for more adrenaline-packed fun. Had a great day at velocity valley, super kind staff and plenty of thrills while waiting shortly for our rides. The swoop was definitely worth experiencing !!

Great staff, unique and fun experiences in an exceptionally beautiful setting. Visited Velocity Valley to try the Shweeb for the novelty. It was more of a race setup than scenic ride through trees but still a lot of fun. Also did the Freefall Xtreme which was awesome. Very helpful staff and a really awesome setting, as the enclosure is clear and above everything with great views of the surrounding valley. Staff was also awesome - so friendly and welcoming, and even recommended a few place to eat and visit locally. Highly recommend, and well worth the price. There's a roll and ride package if you're wanting to do the Zorb as well, which is a pretty good deal.

The grade-5 rafting trip includes navigating through fast and furious rapids, offering breathtaking views of canyons and rainforests. The highlight of the experience is the exhilarating plunge over Tutea Falls, a 7-meter near-vertical drop into the pool below.
What an incredible experience with Kaituna Cascades Rafting! A huge thank you to Dan, Josh, and Blue, you made us feel so comfortable and confident from the very start. The mix of professionalism, fun, and excitement was spot on. Everything was well organised, the safety briefing was clear, and the energy you brought made the whole adventure unforgettable. 🌊😀 Thank you for an amazing experience – one we will never forget 🙌🫶

We’re so lucky!! It was my first time rafting, and meeting Malcom made it such a fun and enjoyable experience! Even though my English isn’t very good and communication might have been difficult, he was so kind and gave detailed explanations. Thank you so much, I’ll definitely visit again next time! All the staff are such sweet guys!!!!

We had an amazing experience, the rafting trip was truly unforgettable and absolutely worth recommending! You don’t need any prior experience, beginners are totally fine like us. Our boat flipped while going over the waterfall, but Josh handled everything like a pro and kept everyone safe. Ps, he is super funny! Dan is our safety guide, he is a cool beans too. Thank you for giving us such a wonderful experience! The best ⭐️

2nd trip with Kaituna Cascades and this time down Kaituna River...it did not disappoint! Smiles, laughs, and thrills the whole way down. Our guide Jasper knew everything about the river, made us feel comfortable, and was totally entertaining. Malcom, our safety kayaker was incredible and saved me from floating away from the rafts! I highly recommend this company and group of talented and hilarious guides. Just book it...you'll absolutely love it!

Highly recommended! Just got back from a great trip on the Kaituna river. From the moment we arrived the whole team were friendly, informative and enthusiastic. The rafting was exciting with a mix of rapids and waterfalls, including the famous 7 metre Tutea Falls. Shout-out to our excellent and entertaining guide Cole!

So much fun! A great team that have all the gear, all the knowledge and all the experience to guide you through it and make you feel safe. A real smooth operation! Thoroughly appreciated the guide's enthusiasm despite the number of times they must have done that same stretch of river. Awesome. A great experience and such beautiful scenery. Don't miss this activity when you visit Rotorua!

Had such a great time doing this. 5 of us went for my birthday and I've wanted to do this for a long time and I'm glad to say it didn't disappoint. It was all very well organized from start to finish. Our instructor Josh was great and made the experience even more enjoyable for us all. Thank you.

I enjoyed my short tour so much that I’m still thinking about it—it was incredible! I arrived a bit early and got to chat with some of the staff… their jokes were great, and the couple is lovely. Keep up the good vibes! 😉 The gear they provide is excellent. We even got two fleeces to keep us warm, and they did an amazing job. I did the rafting tour with two other girls and Dan as our guide and Josh as safety guy—an awesome small group! I’ve been rafting three times before, but honestly, the 7m waterfall made me nervous this time. Normally, I don’t get that feeling doing stuff like this. But wow, it was so much fun, and I felt completely safe. We made it down without flipping, even though it felt really close. Thinking about it now, maybe it would have been even cooler if we had flipped! :D The photos turned out great as well. My only small critique is the photo pricing: if you buy them after the tour, it’s 50 NZD, but if you purchase within the first 24 hours on their website, it’s only 40 NZD. I didn’t know that beforehand—I would have gladly given the extra 10 NZD as a tip for Dan instead, lol. Thank you so much, I hope I will see you again someday! :)

This is one of the most unusual but refreshing places in Rotorua. We visited this after online recommendations and to utilise time when it was raining heavily outside. We were not disappointed at all. The wait time to enter was about 10 mins or so, but after that we ended up spending an hour and a half clicking pictures and giggling on the interesting artefacts on display. The ticket prices are genuine and completely worth it. The location is easily accessible by road and very close to Skyline luge. Ample parking is available on site. Nearby there is an animal farm where one can see ostriches running around, which is an interesting experience for kids. Highly recommended for families and every age.

Interesting and beautiful church. We came during the winter so we called to set up an appointment to see the church. It was super easy to set up and the woman we spoke with was very friendly and helpful. When we arrived to the church for our appointment she opened it up and told us some facts, history, and stories about the church. You do need to pay a small 5 dollar donation to see the church. It is beyond worth the small donation to visit this lovely place and do a small part to ensure the repairs and upkeep. If you are in Rotorua go check it out!

Beautiful spot, more signage would be good as the track now goes right round to the free Doc motorcamp at the start of Acacia Rd ending end of Millar Rd Lake Okareka Rotorua but you can cut short turning around at the bridge returning on the same track you came in from Acacia Rd. Beautiful beach towards bridge and loads of bird life with viewing huts.

I’d only recommend coming here if you’re truly planning on spending time here. We had an hour to kill so took the Gondola up for a lookout and didn’t realize the price until we got there. Poor planning on our behalf but otherwise pricey. Lots of activities available for many ages.

The staff were lovely. We got a free ride because the go pro footage didn't record . The ride itself was exhilarating! Just the adrenaline rush we were after !

Love this place just writing this review makes me want to go back! The luge is very fun! Especially if you love speed but you do feel very in control with breaking and tight steering. The track is wide enough that you will have no problem passing if you are a dare devil. And if the line gets too long stop in at the cafe it has delicious coffee and food! And food I mention the amazing view??

We took the gondola and the luge as well. Luge is super fun. You're allowed to go with kids. I went with my 18 month old and she enjoyed it immensely. I just took a single ride. Would have loved to take more. But it was worthy. And yes if you're taking multiple luge rides, there is a ski lift that takes you to the start point and yes I took my 18 month old as well. Be safe. Scenic and a nice activity to do.

Fun place. Lot’s of things for families to do. Only saw teenagers and twenty somethings on the big swing but all seemed to enjoy it. Worth taking in the wine tasting and lunch whilst you are up there.

Enjoyed the experience as this was my first time, my family of (3 adults and 1 child cost us $209.00 ) i booked the gondala with lunch. Good range of food selection was nice and the atmosphere was amazing. We had a window seating where the view was spectacular. Lucky we were by a fan as it was very humid and hot that day. I wouldn't like to be seated in the middle of the room. I suggest need to invest in installing air conditioning. If going there make sure you have saved enough money too enjoy what is on offer. Recommend packing own lunch and drink. Very expensive. $5 for a bottle of water.

We recently stayed 2 nights at Rotorua Thermal Holiday Park with our camper-van and had a wonderful experience. The park is spacious and well-organized, making it easy to park and set up. The powered sites are generous in size and well-maintained, with good access to water and electricity hookups. The communal facilities, including the kitchen, and clean bathrooms with hot showers, were excellent and very convenient for camper-van travelers. The location is ideal—close enough to the city centre and major attractions, yet peaceful and surrounded by greenery. The staff were friendly and helpful, providing a warm welcome and useful local tips. Pros: • Spacious, powered sites • Clean, well-equipped communal facilities • Friendly and helpful staff • Convenient location near Rotorua attractions Cons: • Some facilities could use refurbishment Overall, Rotorua Thermal Holiday Park is a fantastic choice for camper-van travelers looking for comfort, convenience, and a relaxing atmosphere in Rotorua.

Really great experience. Hot springs weren't on my to do list but I'm very glad I ended up here. Nice mix of locals and tourists (I traveled out of season). They are well geared for motorhome/RV visits. Reception staff are very cool. Rooms and facilities are all clean and up to scratch. The big geyser in Rotorua (the name escapes me) is just up the road.

Very disappointed with my experience here. I had only just made a booking about an hour before arriving for a powered suite for a motor home. When we arrived the smell of the sulphur in the area really got to me. Due to a medical condition having an over-sensitive sense of smell. I found it hard to breathe and near vomiting.. we decided to leave Rotorua and go on further where I wouldn't be affected. We had checked in, but never even went through the gates to our site. We called and explained what had happened. We were told to contact them the next morning about a refund which we did. I received an email back saying they can't give refunds for same day cancellations. But I would've thought a bit of compassion considering the circumstances The booking, arrival and cancellation all happened within a couple of hours. It wasn't just a change of mind, it was a medical reason causing me dry wretching and trouble breathing.

Was nice and clean. Lots of kitchen space and utensils supplied with bedding and towels for family shared cabins. Struggled with the clothes drier that swallowed my money. Had wet clothes and towels for 3 days that just would not dry. It was more drizzle weather. Hot pools and cold pools was nice to enjoy for young and old. Family TV rooms for cabin fever time after dinner was difficult as TV was difficult to use. But over all will go again.

We stayed for 2 nights on an unpowered site and it was perfect. Clean facilities, great hot showers and lots of space (early spring, didn't have to book in advance). The hot pools we're also very nice. Only thing to improve was the wifi, access is free but you only get 1GB a day.

Had a great stay however one person in reception (older lady, glasses, short white hair) was absolutely horrible to my 10 year old son. Threatened to charge him (us) more money as we used their white towels in the pools/hot pools. We weren't told at check-in and there were no signs anywhere around the pools or in the cabins to say we couldn't..... she made him feel small and he came back in tears. It could be written on their website but she did not have to treat my son like that. Safety: The outside pool is slippery and the handrail is not bolted into the concrete paver properly. The paver it is bolted into is actually ripping itself out of the ground. Almost slipped into the pool and the handrail almost came with me. Needs to be fixed asap. Our cabin was clean and I noticed the cleaners took great pride in their work so they deserve to be highly commended. Good location, fairly priced, hot pools are excellent, overall had a generally decent experience except for the way the old reception woman spoke to my child and the slippery outdoor pool.

We stayed in the cabins that have a bathroom and kitchenette. We are a family of 5. Room had 1 double bed,1 bunk set and they provided a cot for our baby no extra charge. Room was warm, Cosy and had everything we needed. Nice park and pools were warm. My family will be back again.

Miniature golf course
Mini Golf Rotorua is a unique and family-friendly activity in Rotorua that offers an unforgettable experience. The mini-golf course is set in a magical night-time wonderland with native New Zealand flora and fauna, including adorable fluffy rabbits. It's a perfect spot for a romantic date or a fun night out with friends. The 18-hole course provides hours of entertainment for all ages, and there are rewards for top scorers to add some friendly competition.
I honestly don’t have words to describe how magical this place was. There was a moment when we were standing in the warm sun, the course’s palm trees and foliage swaying in the breeze, bubbles blowing out over the green, bunnies hopping around our feet — that was the moment we wondered if it real life or all just a beautiful dream… In all seriousness, this was the best mini golf course I’ve ever done. Sure, the holes weren’t anything insane. Sure, there was a bit of construction going on. BUT NOTHING COMPARES TO GIANT FLEMISH RABBITS RUNNING AROUND. And for any concerned about the rabbits: I feel like they’re well taken care of and living their absolute best lives. They have a TON of space, lots of shade, plenty of hutches and holes, and I’m sure many guests feeding them treats on top of their regular food. Like, I’m jealous of their life. Onto the course itself: I loved all the details! The mini hobbit hole rabbit clutch. The fairy garden. The bubble dispenser. The fog machine at one of the holes. The rabbit jokes everywhere. There was a lot of thought put into everything. The holes were fun, too, even if they weren’t anything crazy. I saw a review complaining about bunny poop: dude, what did you expect with giant rabbits running around?! I certainly didn’t notice it, the course felt surprisingly clean to me. (We also lucked out in that we were the first ones to arrive and only ones there for most of the time, so we had the course and all the rabbits to ourselves.) The service: Very nice lady that got us all set up! She does a fantastic job. Overall: This was literally a top moment in my life. Am I overreacting just because I’m a huge animal lover? Maybe. I don’t care. This course was fun, pretty and had RABBITS. What more could you want?

Brilliant fun, great mini golf course - 18 holes with added games and jokes along the way. You are able to feed the rabbits and pet them, definitely worth going at sun down for the lights, the atmosphere was fun and had great music. Would highly recommend for all ages. Snacks and drinks available. Thank you!

We were lucky enough to have the place to ourselves this afternoon and had a great time. The 18 hole course was just the right level of fun and challenging. The rabbits were super sweet and loved the rabbit food we purchased from the counter. The chicken was cool but definitely preferred to stay at a distance. There were bubble and smoke machines and fairly lights all over the place. This would be an awesome vibe at nighttime. We paid $43 for two adults and a packet of rabbit food. This was a super fun activity which I thoroughly enjoyed

Went here with the family, such a cool experience. April I hope I got your name right was fabulous! My daughter made a friend for sure, she got a sticker with her favorite bunny on it and a lollipop. You deserve a pay rise girl you definitely made our experience here that much more pleasant keep up the good job 😁

The bunnies are soooo CHONKY! They’re so fat and cute. I can’t contain my excitement when I saw them. It was cool they have photos of the bunnies on the wall. Whether you love bunnies or not, it is definitely a cute experience to have. The mini golf has 18 holes and the bunnies hop or lounge on the track. But most of the times, they’re quite unbothered and won’t move until you force them to. Lol! I recommend coming at night as it just feels more magical. You can still see the bunnies even tho it’s dark. I reckon this is suitable for any age group!

Mini Golf with a twist! They have rabbits roaming free on the course. They weren't as active during the day and huddled under the tree sleeping mostly. We were told there rabbits are more active after 5pm when they wake up. If the car park is full, it means it's also quite busy on the course. The family combo is good value

Amazing staff and animals here. Such a great price as well for all the interacting you get. I just wish they had a donation bin for the animals. Can’t wait to see them grow and collect more over the years. The course is simple and the props are awesome, loved looking for elves. Highly recommend, and miss skittles already Bonus: Try Waiotapu, bunny golf, and nighttime red woods for two people $150 and a great full day.

The gentleman at the desk was absolutely lovely — so warm, welcoming, and friendly! Mini golf with bunnies — loved it! The course is fantastic for families, with a great mix of challenges with fun little enchanted surprises around the grounds to keep the younger ones entertained between shots. The bunnies are adorable and very friendly, which adds a special touch. Everything is well maintained, and the facilities cater really well for everyone. Highly recommend for a fun family outing, especially in the evening with the beautiful fairy lights .
