We rocked up early for dinner and thankfully they had tables because it filled up fairly quickly! Service was excellent - very friendly and helpful. I had the lamb shoulder and my partner had the market fish of the day which was moki and both were fantastic. We were raving about our dishes and decided to follow up with a sticky date and ginger pudding, however the dessert fell a bit flat for us. We were otherwise very pleased with our dinner and would definitely recommend The Fat Duck.

Awesome sirloin steaks we’ve tasted in New Zealand. Highly recommend The Fat Duck @ Te Anau! Get the dining table at the middle for full 180deg view. Must have their mulled wine and wines. Ordered a medium + a medium well steaks.

Found the menu a little limited but superb quality of food and presentation. Service was really good despite being a little late on desert ordering but they were very busy. Managed to squeeze us in which was appreciated, very noisy customers which I guess comes with a gastro pub!

We had a lovely dinner at Fat Duck while in Te Anau. Our server was great, we sat at the tall table by the bar. The food and drinks were delicious- highly recommend.

Excellent dining experience! Loved the main courses, fresh salads and great drink selection. The pork belly was absolutely fantastic, perfectly cooked and flavorful. Big thanks to the friendly staff who made our visit so enjoyable.

Came at happy hour in Spring (late Sept/early Oct) for cold drinks, a pot of tea, and without a doubt THE best fries I had in the whole country, and it wasn’t even close. Thick cut, golden-browned and delicious. Dinner was packed but happy hour on a Friday was very relaxed, though we got there right at the end of the live music set.

Terrible dining experience and overly salty food 👎 - The fried wonton was a disaster- it had two thick skins making it hard to bite into. The filling was drowned in hoisin sauce making it overly sweet and a gloppy mess. - The seafood chowder was a salt bomb with cheap unfresh seafood- we added lemon but it didn’t help cut the saltiness. - Popcorn chicken was overcooked and dry. The beef itself was cooked well but again the peppercorn sauce was unbearably salty- it was not edible. - smoked salmon was tasty and fresh but again the whole dish itself was too salty - The lamb was tender though tasteless and with the peas sauce it made it unappetising - The margarita was salt and water but poorly responded by the waiter who defensively said “well, we followed the recipe”- if you do not like feedbacks, why even ask? 👍 - the only decent thing was the fresh chips- crispy and well cooked

Super cozy atmosphere and the girls working there are amazing! 💕 Homebake carrot cake and berry brownie are delish if you’re for a sweet treat, the hash stack was super yummie! Great for brekkie or little arvo tea in the sun! Hands down best coffee shop in town ✨

We ordered breakfast for four and the service was really good and quick even though it was very busy. Food was excellent and very satisfying portions. Cafe was very clean and has a really nice quirky feel to it. The only reason I am giving 4 stars for atmosphere is because there isn't much seating indoors and you don't want to sit outside in a very cold, windy and rainy weather. Locals say say it rains 4 days out of 5 which I am honestly just taking their word. Free parking available easily and its a very convenient location and food is really good any time there. There are vegetarian and vegan options as well, they even try to customise the request as best as they could. My daughter had bagels with cream cheese and berry jam and said thad they were the best. Overall very happy to visit again which we did the next day🙂

Locals told us this is the best spot in town. I believe it. We visited 3 times in our 2 days! Highly recommend the steak sandwich and hash brown stack. Food and drinks come out reasonably fast especially for how busy it was every time we were there. Really lovely staff. D was our favourite. You need to collect own water/ cutlery inside, that’s the only reason for not giving all 5 stars for service. Outdoor seats were comfy and spacious, choices of in sun or shade with umbrellas. With nice views of the mountain over the carpark.

Amazing food and service at this cafe! We had the pasta, warm chicken salad, hash brown stack and the steak sandwich. Flavours were all on point and beautifully curated. An easy 5 stars, highly recommend dropping by when in Te Anau!

We stopped by with our guide to get some takeaway food. The food was delicious, but the service was a bit disappointing. Upon entering the shop, the counter staff immediately — and rather loudly — asked twice what we wanted to order, sounding rather impatient, even though there wasn’t a queue at the time. We barely had any time to look at the menu and felt rushed to decide, so we just picked a few items quickly. Even our local guide sensed it and apologised to us afterwards, mentioning that this usually doesn’t happen.

We had the most delicious breakfast at Sandfly Cafe. I had the vegetarian bun and my husband had eggs Benedict with hot smoked salmon. The coffee was awesome, there’s a great atmosphere and the staff are super friendly. We will be back!

Delicious creamy tomato soup and a Vegan deluxe salad hit the spot. It was chilly and rainy, but there are outdoor covered tables. And we were visited by some sweet lil sparrow friends.

Wow, what a delicious meal! We went on Sunday night and ordered the dish of the day, roasted pork with vegetables! It was an explosion of flavors and warmth for the heart, just like homemade food. Everything was so tasty, and we also had the cheesecake of the day and the pecan tart, both were absolutely delicious!

This place was jumping when we ventured in for dinner on a Saturday evening. We had to wait for a table as we didn't make a reservation but were happy to grab a drink and soak up the atmosphere. My husband was delighted with the lambs fry and bacon. The meal was good the dessert choices were very tempting but we declined.

We are planning a visit to Milford Sound and stopby here, found this western restaurant with good rate. We visit at around 3pm and the restaurant was not crowded. Ordered the pork ribs and rump steak. The pork ribs look good if to grill it a bit longer with some burning maybe better. As for the steak is ok, meat is soft and mideim done. Doesn't lost the juicy of the meat. The staffs are friendly and nice chatting.

Food was great! I got the roast of the day (lamb) and it was perfect. I also got their pavlova as dessert and that also was fantastic. Service was very friendly and prompt. Atmosphere was casual and relaxed. Great place to take the family. Pool table upstairs for entertainment.

Had their roast Lamb special on Sunday. It was the worst roast I’ve had in my life. Tiny portions, no gravy and dry as anything. Nice waitress and cool spot though but do not recommend the roast what so ever.

I would recommend roast of the day and berries parfait 👌 we ate at this restaurant twice the second night my husband ordered steak and I had their pork ribs with bourbon sauce.

There are three vegan food options including fries. We recommend the Crispy Tofu Sushi bowl as the Toufie Bao Bun with lettuce is not worth the money. This was our best and most fresh vegan meal option in Te Anau! We were also grateful for the hours (open for the full day) and ambience.

Absolutely delicious food! I came on a weekday during lunchtime. I ordered the tuna poke bowl - this was surprisingly the nicest poker bowl I've ever had. The flavours just paired so well. The tuna was fresh and didn't taste metallic or fishy. I really liked how the veggies all blended perfectly. The pork adobo was also delicious, very well seasoned and tender. The place is clearly run by a family or people who love what they do and it shows. An absolute must visit

Best food we had in Te Anau! Everything was super tasty and cooked to perfection. We had the bao bun Bambi (the best of the dishes we got), the bao bun with tofu (a solid combo) and Vietnamese loaded fries with chicken and tofu chips. If we where to do it again we would skip the tofu chips and go for another bao bun or the sushi bowl. 10/10 would recommend!

Great food and service. It's located in the town center with indoor and outdoor seating. Their spicy tuna sushi bowl was fantastic. They also have a good wine selection. Highly recommended.

Feathered bao bun was average, Tom Kha Gai soup flavourless, tofu chips were good, Ginger beer was flat. Service was on the slow side. Not sure why this place is so highly rated on google maps. Maybe the loaded fries are the way to go here??

Great food, great staff! Stylish little eatery feels like you’re in a Foodie lane in Auckland. Ventured away the usual Bao buns and tried the Filipino pork Adobo. Pork was super tender and had so much flavour.

Honestly thought we’d get to see more birds but for a free to the public bird sanctuary this place is pretty great! Got to see the takahae birds, as well as the chattiest most fun parakeets I’ve ever encountered, and different types of ducks. The kaka were on loan for breeding so sadly we didn’t get to see them, and in my opinion the only thing missing to complete the experience was a kiwi bird or 2. Otherwise this was a fun little stop lakeside, across the street from the national park. Worth a stop if you’re in the area.

Tiny little, free sanctuary with some really interesting birds in small enclosures. But the birds really do seem happy and content with their place there. Fun to walk to, easy to get to via a very scenic walking path from town, and it's beautiful even if it's not kept up. The public toilet is a pit toilet, so bring hand sanitizer if you need to use it.

A bargain at twice the price, this (free parking and entry) bird sanctuary seemed in the process of changing management, and a a few of the enclosures seemed empty, but we got great views of these Takahes and a couple others- no kiwis, but we expected that going into it. Nice, relaxed way to spend an hour while visiting Te Anau in early Spring (late Sept/early Oct) after or between bigger adventures

A tremendous surprise to find a Bird Sanctuary that cost nothing to wander around. Saw my first ever Takahē.

Highly recommend stopping by if staying or travelling through Te Anau. Beautiful park, you can tell the bird here are well looked after. Went in the morning and got to see the breeding pair of takahē with their chick foraging up close to the fence. Lots of information on the birds around the park,

Awesome conservation work sheltering and breeding some of NZs rarest birds. The highlight is the Takahe enclosure where we watched a pair with a young one rooting around and digging up roots. There's not many places you'll get to see this remarkable bird that was thought to be extinct until recently.

Punanga Manu o Te Anau / Te Anau Bird Sanctuary is a must-visit for nature lovers and bird enthusiasts alike. It’s truly amazing to see these beautiful and often rare birds up close in such a peaceful setting. The sanctuary is well-maintained, and the staff are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about conservation. Watching the takahē and kākā in their naturalistic enclosures was a highlight—such a special experience. The free entry (with donations encouraged) makes it accessible to everyone, and it’s a great educational stop for families too. A lovely way to connect with New Zealand’s unique wildlife.

We had the privilege of waiting almost an hour from ordering to finally getting our food — only to be informed, after a lengthy wait, that they had completely forgotten our order. P.S. We were actually among the very first customers through the door that day. Impressive, right? As for the food… let’s just say it was as unforgettable as the service — in the most ordinary way possible. Definitely not worth the price. Unless you’re feeling particularly generous with your time and money, I’d suggest you spend both elsewhere. To be fair, the staff were polite enough — but when it comes to their attitude and management, it’s honestly a masterclass in how not to run a restaurant. Btw, until I have finished this review. We are still waiting for our pizza coming.

Helpful friendly staff. Big portions and delicious food. Highly recommended! I ordered the traditional spaghetti meat sauce and enjoyed the depth of flavour, my family enjoyed the pizzas.

We visited La Toscana Pizzeria while on a family holiday with our two kids and had a wonderful experience. The service was warm, friendly, and prompt. The pizzas were simple and absolutely delicious — thin, crispy bases with a great crust that hit the spot. We also enjoyed a lovely glass of wine. It was the perfect meal to round out our trip. We won’t be back only because we don’t live nearby — but we’ll definitely remember it fondly!

We were a little disappointed they ran out of pasta but not a bother. The pizza was absolutely delicious! And good value for money. The service was great even though they were busy with tables and takeaways. All the girls were so sweet - you’re all doing a great job 🤩

Pizza was okay Large is a decent size- had some for leftovers the next day which was solid. But medium size would be way too small. Only had a 15 minute wait for our takeaway pizza- had a little walk around the town as we waited.

Alchimia Pizza was very delicious. It was a busy hour when we visited. So had to go for Takeaway. Would love to visit again for Dine in. Lastly, The staff here is very courteous. Way to go. 🎖️

Charming theater with a great movie selection! Very comfortable seats and cozy experience - clearly a lot of care and attention has been put into the theater!

I absolutely loved this bar! I was so sad we ended up being in town while the chef was off (check the schedule if you're interested in meals), but their bar food was still absolutely fantastic. We had the fries and the portion was large, fresh, and very tasty. I cannot say enough things about their boysenberry sour. We got multiple drinks, that were all delicious, but that one was my favorite. The perfect amount of sweet and tart! We really enjoyed the way they were presented and watching them be made.

The venison was amazing as well as the appetizer we got. Drinks were on point as well. My wife has Celiac and had no issues at all with cross contamination. Staff were very helpful and attentive. The atmosphere is very good as well. I would recommend this place to anyone.

Black Dog is a hidden gem I might have overlooked if not for a local recommendation—and I’m so glad I didn’t. The venison was nothing short of exceptional—perfectly tender, expertly seasoned, and beautifully balanced. We stumbled across this restaurant and we are so glad that we did. This is the best food my partner and I have ever had, so surprised that something so delicious was in this small town. We wish we could come back regularly. You have to try!

The chef is on holiday for 2 months BUT they still have a few nibbles available and thankfully they had the gluten free fries available which is exactly what we were craving. The service is friendly and very helpful, the lady behind the bar saw my partner was struggling to get wifi and she offered the password. The taste of the fries was honestly so nice, with parmesan cheese on fries it tends to be too strong and overtake the potato flavour but these have the right balance to them. They also come with 2 sauces (aioli and tomato) which is great because we didn’t run out of sauce like you usually do when you order fries elsewhere. Would come back and would recommend. Also the taste in music was perfect for a nice chill afternoon at the bar.

I have eaten all across the world, and this has to be one of my top ten meals! The atmosphere was absolutely divine. The front is a cozy bar with snacks and live music, but if you continue to walk through the rustic barn, you’ll enter into the gorgeous, cozy restaurant. Female and locally owned, this family run restaurant serves exquisite meals made from fresh, locally sourced produce. The venison was cooked to perfection and paired perfectly with the coal Pitt Pinot noir. The meal was made even better when the host/daughter (and soon to be owner) informed me part of the meal was updated because her sister loved creamed cabbage, so her mum (the chef) was inspired and added it to meal! I wish I had more room because I would’ve loved to have ordered every dish on the menu! I felt right at home, hearing stories of how the restaurant came to be, how it has evolved over the years, and the future plans the family has for it. Each of the staff delivered service with great care and you could feel how each customer was truly enjoying themselves. I will definitely be back and I couldn’t recommend this place enough!

What an adorable and warm establishment! I visited in early November 2025 and although I could not get a reservation at the restaurant (through nobody’s fault but my own due to poor planning) the staff was very friendly and directed me to the bar menu. The very friendly barman also helped me choose a nice local alcoholic ginger beer on tap and the Game Platter. It was tasty and quite a lot of food because it’s intended for two; the lovely server gave me a to go box upon request. I enjoyed the chatter and vibe so much that I took a stroll along the lake and returned again the next day (today, a Friday) for a pint of something different. They were equally as warm and helped guide me to a different local beer on tap that I enjoyed, and I enjoyed passing time in the atmosphere of the local pub on a Friday night. The food and drink was well worth the time and money but for me it was the staff that made the experience memorable.

I don’t normally leave reviews, but I felt this one was worth reading. I had high hopes for Redcliff Bar and Restaurant after seeing so many positive reviews, but my visit was extremely disappointing. After receiving my meal, a dark-haired waitress came over and asked how everything was. I told her honestly that it was woeful — she laughed, not realising I was being serious, and simply replied, “That’s a shame.” That response really set the tone for the rest of the experience. I ordered the ribeye steak, which was poorly cooked and lacked any real flavour or sear. When I later spoke with the chef — a man in his mid to late 20s — about how it was prepared, he explained that it had gone straight from the fridge onto a pan that clearly wasn’t hot enough. He didn’t seem concerned about this at all, which was quite surprising. It made me think there may have been a different, more experienced chef here in the past — possibly explaining the better reviews from before. The staff were polite enough but seemed untrained and unfamiliar with the menu, unable to answer basic questions about the dishes. The owner arrived toward the end of my visit but unfortunately didn’t seem particularly concerned either. When I mentioned how poor the meal had been, she didn’t believe it could have been that bad, and only then explained that the ribeye I’d been served was from a different region than the one listed on the menu — something that was never mentioned beforehand. Overall, the experience was woeful. Between the poorly cooked steak, lack of staff knowledge, and indifference from both the chef and owner, Redcliff fell far short of expectations. Sadly, I wouldn’t recommend it based on this visit.

An absolutely fantastic dining experience! The food was outstanding – we had steaks, venison, and salmon, and every dish was cooked to perfection. The flavors were rich and well-balanced, and you could tell the ingredients were top quality. On top of that, the service was excellent. Our server was incredibly attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable, making sure we had everything we needed and offering great recommendations. It’s clear that the staff genuinely cares about creating a memorable experience for their guests. Highly recommend Redcliff Restaurant to anyone looking for top-notch food and exceptional service in the area! We will definitely be back.

Warm n cosy on the wet night we went. Book as even on a wet week day they were full, and we only got a table as we booked the day before. (Inside if raining or cold is best - close to fireplace is also where live music is) Fireplace. Fine dining . Good live guitar music.

Caution, the portions are big! Good thing we only ordered 2 mains (osso bucco and steak) and a salad. But hey, if you're hungry, go crazy. The taste was really on point, but the sauces really stole the show. Oh and finished with a sticky date pudding. Definitely give it a try.

We went here for a slightly upscale dinner during our trip. The food had pretty presentation and the servings were large. They did have an outdoor seating area although we ended up sitting inside at a small table.

Absolutely loved this cozy little pie shop! The aroma as you walk in is enough to make your mouth water. The pies are freshly baked, golden, and perfectly flaky with generous, flavorful fillings. Whether you’re into classic mince & cheese, steak & mushroom, or a sweet treat like apple pie, they’ve got something for everyone. Friendly staff, warm atmosphere, and great value for money. A perfect stop for a comforting bite any time of day!

An absolute must visit pie bakery in Te Anau/South Island. These were up there in the best pies I've had on my trip across NZ. They're famous for their venison and plum pie and lamb with mint. I ordered the venison pie and loved how tender the meat was and how it all came together with the sweetness of the plum. I also ordered the bacon and egg pie which surprisingly was my favourite and best pie I've had of that flavour. The mince and cheese was nice but could be less rich? Otherwise, I'd highly recommend this place. The staff are friendly and efficient, place is clean and there is parking out front.

Loved the pie!! Got there on 1st Sep worried it might not be opened but YAY it is. Got the creamy chicken! It was SOOOO GOOD! The pastry is just right, not too flaky and not too dense. Filling was nice and chicken was tender. My friend had the steak & pepper and she approved it as well!

Perfect little pit stop in Te Anau and right next to the petrol station, making it super convenient for a quick bite. The variety of pies and the venison pie was especially tasty: rich, hearty, and tasty. Grabbed a coffee to go as well. Friendly staff.

My favorite pie shop! Richly flavoured and full of meat. Favourites where the Thai chicken curry, venison and lamb mint. Lovely service from the nice lady at the counter.

We arrived there at 7.40am and surprisingly the pie is ready, hot and tasty. Ordered the beef & steak pie, chicken & bacon pie both very well. For drink, i have the chai latte, but it is a bit too sweet for me. The shop doesn't have an indoor seating area, but right outside the shop, there are a few outdoor picnic tables.

My steak was adequately salted. Food was delish. Service was okay. It was a busy weekend. So, kudos to the ataff for handling food rush hour. The View was absolutely amazing!!!! Worth a visit when you’re in Te Anau.

2 Stars for that “friendly staff” My family and I traveled to Te Anau from Auckland for a beautiful trip. We explored the lovely town and visited the glowworm caves. Everything was amazing, except our experience at this restaurant. When we arrived, a waitress seated us at a table that seemed chosen for her own convenience, not ours. There were plenty of empty tables around, but we were put in a spot that didn’t feel comfortable. We kindly asked if we could move to a soft couch seat, and another staff member was very friendly. He said we were welcome to sit wherever we liked and even introduced some of the menu items to us. We really appreciated his warm attitude. But just as we settled at the new table, the original waitress came back and said in an unfriendly tone, “Weren’t you sitting over there? Why did you move?”
We were surprised. There were still lots of empty seats, so why did it matter? It felt like she was treating us like her pets, expecting us to follow her orders, and showing clear disapproval when we didn’t. No customer should be made to feel that way. The whole situation left us feeling really uncomfortable and unwelcome. It felt like some people just aren’t free to sit where they prefer, which is hard to understand when there were so many empty tables. If that’s how things are run, it really makes you question the attitude of the staff, especially hers, and the standard of service at this place. We hope no one else has to feel this way. Te Anau is a beautiful place, and experiences like this should not happen to any visitor.

Ordered a Well Done Rump. came out bloody when I Cut it, all red inside. Service was reasonably quick and staff were good. Pity the rump was rare. Would have been 5 star 🌟 if Meal was on Cue

The customer service was absolutely fantastic but the food portions were small for what you were paying for.

Fast and efficient service with meals arriving at our table in quick succession. Our burgers were awesome and the cheesecake made for a perfect experience. Staff could not have been more friendly and accommodating.

We came here for dinner after given recommendations by our hotel manager. Decided to check out their menu. Ordered their signature pork ribs and the the rib eye steak. Also had a local ale to go with it. The ribs were nicely done, soft and well marinated. The sauce that goes with it was a bit sweet but still quite tasty. The rib eye was nicely done and taste great as well. Service was efficient and the restaurant had a good crowd on a Saturday night.

5/5! My partner and I had an early dinner here waiting for a tour. The food and service was wonderful. I had the Lamb Hot Pot and my partner had the Surf N Turf, we were both really happy with our meals. Our server Jessica was lovely, super friendly and gave us some great advice on what to do in the area. Would recommend anyone come here for a tasty, hot meal and a drink while you're staying on Te Anau.

Considering there were 2 large buses and umpteen grey nomads parked up we got out breakfast pretty quickly. I had my doubts about the coffee considering the speed they were pumping them out but were really good!

The inside is a weird sterile gift shop and ready to heat food. The showers are quite good, but for some reason they are not available in the middle of the afternoon. Ladies showers didn't work so my wife joined me in mine. Good water pressure. We got gas too, good price but they didn't have a windshield washing brush which was weird.

So glad we popped in for breakfast on the way to Milford Sound. Ordered a hot chocolate as well which was 5/5. The alpacas were worth seeing. You can buy feed inside for $1, the alpacas came from across the field after getting the feed.

Quick stop by on our Te Anau adventure day. Lots of parking, decently sized gift shop, ready to eat food cabinet and ice creams too! Ordered breakfast and hot drinks and very good quality. Friendliest staff and friendlier alpacas. $1 to feed them and funds go into maintaining the farm.

Good place for a quick stop if you are going to/from Milford Sound. They have alpacas nearby and can feed them with food brought from this shop for $2.

Stopped here for brunch. Beautiful hospitality and great souvenirs for the kids. Excellent. Will come back again.

Staff are amazing, giving a balanced amount of information and quiet time from the 25 minute smooth boat across the lake, to taking small groups of about 10 into the cave onto a smaller boat. Not sure why there’s no photos in the cave, I understand no flash and once you’re in the pitch black, but not on entry. However, an amazing walk through the water gushing caves and then into the pitch black to see these fascinating creatures. Presentation at the end was great too.

The Te Anau glow worm caves are an absolute must and should not be missed. Super friendly staff, easy trip, fantastic experience. Five hundred thumbs up from me. (my 22 year old son rated this higher than Milford Sound 😮)

These caves are a culturally and ecologically important system of limestone caves on the western shore of Lake Te Anau, in the southwest of New Zealand. It is a major tourist attraction for the area, as the part of the caverns close to the lake shore is home to glow worms. No one is allowed to take photos inside the caves where the glow worms live for personal safety reasons. Very popular place, lots of tourists and locals. We boarded the boat at Te Anau that took us across to the caves about 30 minutes away. Fee charged for the trip and entry. Uneven terrain, lot of walking. Inside the caves, head clearances are unpredictable and hence you have to be careful especially as it dark in the caves. The guides use torches but its use is minimal. Part of the journey inside involves travel on small boats that are pulled along a fixed route. The glow worms are amazing to see and it is a wonder of nature. Pity that photography is not allowed.

It was an awesome first time experience to see glow worms in the cave. The journey to the cave was by a boat which itself was amazing. Friendly staff keeping all visitors well informed about the facts and history of the cave. I will certainly recommend others to experience nature and its creation.

Wow, an unforgettable and magical experience that left me in awe. Our guide was wonderful...and then she sang "Hallelujah" in the middle of the cave...I had goosebumps and there might have been something in my eye...I was very moved by her beautiful voice. The trio to the cave was equally as wonderful...the amazing views are truly what makes New Zealand so special. Highly recommend!!!

Pictures on Google are deceiving - there really aren't that many glow worms in the cave. Most of the tour is the boat ride there or educational filler. If you don't believe me, read some of the other "bad" reviews. That being said, there are a couple of memorable experiences where they take you down a pitch black tunnel on a boat and go right under some gloworms so that's 30cm from your face. While the experience was ok overall I'm really not a fan of the company RealNZ. Booked in a 5:45 session and was cancelled 10 mins right after doing so with a vague reason - no follow up to try and reschedule. When we get to the wharf, there's the 5:45 session coming in and our boat was 30+ mins late. Their other tour (Doubtful Sounds) was again mainly transport and educational filler.

Mixed feelings. On the one hand, you could argue the 30-min boat ride across Lake Te Anau and visit to the caves alone is worth it. Beautiful surroundings and fascinating cave that is impressive to walk through. The experience of pitch black and silence as you glide on the boat to see the glow worms is also unique, surreal and amazing. However, I couldn’t believe how quickly this was over. And the amount of glow worms was minimal compared to the pictures so I did feel slightly misled. Of course they are animals and the amount must vary day to day. I feel it’s a matter of needing more accurate descriptions of what experience you are getting before booking. A disclaimer about glow worms being part of nature and numbers varying would help manage expectations. Also, I knew the whole tour was over 2 hours, so I was disappointed when only about 30 mins of this was actually in the cave with the glow worms. The stuff around it: boat ride, nature walk learning about native plants, and hot drink during presentation, I did appreciate and enjoy, but I didn’t know that’s what I was booking when I booked. It wouldn’t necessarily have put me off, it’s just a matter of managing expectations and accurate advertising to avoid disappointment. The staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable.

Really good, fast food. Had a vegan pizza (photo shows half as I was too excited to not eat straight away) which surpassed my expectations, and the vegan sticky toffee pudding was incredible. Will be brining family here when they visit Only downside was having the kitchen with the customers meant we could hear the cooks getting snappy with the servers, who in my opinion were doing a great job

We ordered two starters, a salmon pizza and a Hawaiian pizza, plus a salted caramel dessert! Everything was really tasty, and the beer was nice and cold!

Loved the vibes here! The pizzas are delicious and freshly baked in the oven. I believe this restaurant is family-run, and it was such a joy to watch them making pizzas while serving us hungry travelers. We felt so grateful to enjoy this lovely food in Te Anau, and the cozy atmosphere made us feel truly welcome. Special thanks to the little boy and his sister — they were so sweet!

We were here for new Year's Eve and had a delicious dinner of pizza and pasta. The owner was very friendly and able to fit us in at short notice. Wood fired pizzas were delicious and the addition of capers to the garlic prawn fettuccine was genius!

The calzone was chewy and delicious. The BBQ chicken pizza we ordered for our son was perfect for kids’ tastes. Highly recommended!

Our pizzas were very good both visually and in terms of flavour and impressed us across the board. We should have given it five stars for that and for the ambience. Unfortunately, our order was delayed and we didn't receive our pizzas until much later. However, the waitress didn't say anything honest about this. We were only told that our pizza would take longer. I would have liked more honesty and possibly something "on the house" as a small compensation. Nevertheless, thank you for the experience.

We had a lovely dinner here on Tuesday night. We got the Quattro formaggi pizza and Nippoletana Margherita pizza which were both tasty on a thin, but not floppy base. We also got the tiramisu for dessert which was very yummy. The menu had lots of pizza options as well as a few pastas. There were heaps of dessert options too. Service was prompt and friendly. Overall a very pleasant dining experience

Super friendly staff and great local cafe atmosphere vibe. If you like tea, def try the smoked tea! Was craving Asian dishes so tried a few - they were ok!

The staff is very courteous and extremely cooperative. We loved the food and service so much that we visited the restaurant twice in 2 days. The garlic prawns were outstanding and very sumptuous as well. The grilled cod fish was good too. The extra sauces and chilli flakes added spice to the food and tingled the taste buds. The Boba tea was very special. Enjoyed it!

I happened to stop by The Olive Tree Café for breakfast, and it turned out to be such a delightful experience! The cappuccino I had here was honestly one of the best I’ve ever had – smooth, rich, and crafted with real care. The service was excellent from start to finish. The staff were friendly, attentive, and created such a welcoming atmosphere. It felt like more than just a café stop — it felt like a genuinely warm experience. What really stood out for me as a parent was how family-friendly this café is. My child was completely engaged and happy with the toys and playthings available, which made the visit so much more relaxing. It’s rare to find a place that looks after both the adults and the kids so thoughtfully. The café itself has a cozy, inviting vibe, with a sunny backyard that makes it a perfect spot to unwind. Their menu is also impressive, offering everything from bubble teas to homemade treats and hearty breakfasts. If you’re ever in Te Anau, I can’t recommend The Olive Tree Café enough. Great coffee, wonderful service, and a place where both adults and kids can truly enjoy themselves.

Excellent mushroom eggs benedict and chai! I might be biased since we had just finished hiking the Kepler Track and anything would have tasted good, but it was seriously delicious. I think I prefer eggs benedict on toast or an English muffin, but I'm glad I tried it on a croissant! Also, we sat by an outlet it was nice to charge our phones!

Had an amazing lunch here on my way to Milford Sound! Had their garlic prawns, and stir fry noodles with prawns. Special shoutout to Yuki, who listened to my crazy coffee/bubble tea idea and made it for me! It's an iced latte, with brown sugar jellies and some brown sugar syrup. It was AMAZING. If you want to order just say Areeba's special coffee🤪 JK.

I had a Chai latte that was just perfect, and I ordered a date scone. It seemed like they might have accidentally left it behind, so they apologised and brought it over. But, oh no, the scone wasn’t warm! They warmed it up again, and they were super nice about it. It wasn’t super busy, so I’m just guessing they might have forgotten about it! :-)

We decided to try Olive Tree Cafe instead of the more popular one listed in trip advisor. I had the full breakfast while my wife had the poached eggs breakfast. The staff were very friendly and helpful at such an early morning hour even before most stores. It was worth it and reasonable as well. I would highly recommend this place for a good breakfast. 👍👍👍👌👌👌😊

I recently dined at Radha’s and had a great experience. Their prawn biriyani, kadai chicken, and naan were super authentic and tasty. The person who served us was so friendly and welcoming. Definitely a must-visit!

Best Indian food I have ever tasted!! The service is really patient and observant. You have to order the garlic cheese naan bread and whatever main you take it’s fabulous. Must try

Excellent food, my husband was craving for Indian food, and we found this restaurant. I believe there are no other Indian restaurant around. We tried chicken tikka, chicken korma and kadhai paneer was delicious, also tried raita which was not so good it was sweet my opinion it should be savoury. Other than that food was delicious. I loved indoor decorations took me back to my country.

Wow, this was really good Indian food. I ordered butter chicken and my husband ordered madras chicken, both were excellent. The staff was kind and prices reasonable. Thank you for a great experience in Te’anau.

Good food and service here. Probably not many Indian restaurants in this area. The server was honest when asked for his recommendations, such as the biryani not being the authentic Dum style and that the butter chicken was sweet (to suit the Kiwis) and that the spice levels could be altered to Indian styles if required. The food arrived pretty quickly and was fresh and hot. We tried the garlic naans, dal makhani and chicken tikka masala. Give them a go!

I order 1x footlong chicken teriyaki & 1 footlong southern chicken style subs today +1 toasties (on offer at discounted price along with footlong) ..however since I asked him to cut them into half ….I was wrongly charged for 2 x 6inch subs instead of being charged as per footlong subs This is such a sham !! After I paid and was about to leave ..I did a mental calculation and it didn’t look right ….the service guy didn’t gave me my bill along with the order ..so I went back and asked for the bill print..after going through the bill ..I was confirmed that I was charged for 6 inch ..when I questioned him of why did he do that and charged like this …The service guy explained that he charged me cause it took more paper to wrap them …trust me this is a ridiculous explanation as he tried to hide the truth (when the separate packing was requested) I told him if he would had told me that (at the time of preparing the sub) that I would be charged for 6 inch instead of the footlong price ….I would have asked him to go with single footlong and single paper packing ….and had not asked for seperate packing Also I also understand the business sense of why sub have different pricing for 6 inch and footlong subs ..one is up-scaling strategies and another logical reasoning is that if a customer only buy 6 inch subway still needs to keep the other half bread for next oncoming customer ..so it’s risk vs reward in play for any business when it comes to selling half bread P.S. @subway ..I have been ordering my subs in Sydney and I used to get them wrapped separately all the time ..but I was never charged for 6 inch subs price but of footlong price …so I know for sure this is not a subway policy or paper saving things which the service tried to come up with After much of the arguing about the wrong charge ….I believe this was a deliberate move from the service guy to rip off the customer, by withholding the info and being indifferent to understanding of ordering ….as he very well aware of the fact that most of customers who visit subway here are passing by customers and not regulars/local …so why not make them pay more, by hiding the information Utter nonsense behaviour from service guy. Went in store to get takeaway. Ordered pork riblet footlong. Put my riblets, cheese and bacon on the bread, then put it in for toasting for 30 sec. When went to eat the riblets were like fridge cold. Usually when I go elsewhere they are heated in microwave seperate to sandwich. Also put on very small amounts of veges especially lettuce. Used last of lettuce for my sandwich and then refilled it. Had to heat my riblets up at home. Not the greatest service, said what salad we wanted/didn’t want and still grabbed what we didn’t want. Also no steak and multiple veges missing, was 6pm and they somehow stay open until 9

Bread wasn't fresh and the door of the bread compartment was kept open all the time. Customer service was good but the quality not up to subway standard.

Pretty slow service - and to make it worse they charged us individually for our items instead of using the combo price; and didn’t apply our sub card even though we scanned it when they asked - nothing shows up in the activity log.

Great store, super tidy! Never seen a fast food shop so pristine. We came in early as a group and the one staff member had to suddenly take on a flurry of orders, they provided great service and we all left very happy. Thank you Chim

Had the best couple of hours out on the water in a Fiordland Jet!! Lucy and Zane were fantastic hosts/drivers - highly recommended! Lots of stunning views and fun spins in an incredible part of the world ✨️

We had a fantastic time on the Fiordland Jet speed boat tour in Te Anau. The whole team was friendly, professional, and made the experience really enjoyable from start to finish. Our guide, Alex, was informative and engaging, we had a great time! She shared interesting stories about the land and made sure we felt comfortable and safe throughout the ride. The jet boat was exciting (360 spins and all 🤗), and the scenery along the river was stunning! When the engine was off we felt like we had the whole Fiordland to ourselves, such a surreal experience. Lucy, the operations manager, was super friendly and organized (she even gave us suggestions on other places to see and do!), and helped everything run smoothly. Chris (you'll know right away he's the owner 😄) was also around and it’s clear he takes a lot of pride in the experience they offer. This was a great way to see a different side of Fiordland and learn more about the region. Would definitely recommend if you’re in Te Anau and looking for something a bit adventurous but still relaxed and well-run.

Zayn was incredibly knowledgeable, fun and made my first jet boat experience a wonder! So happy we were able to book on short notice when the road to Milford Sound was closed - instead this experience of Te Anau is now a holiday highlight. Would recommend! The new mini bus to the lake was super comfortable plus they give you rain jackets, life jackets, beanies, gloves and sunglasses. Love supporting independent business. Thanks Amy and Zayne!

Our pilot Alex was great… they say that women are not good drivers, but trust me… the way she 360s is unique! Great fun! Well recommended activity here in Te Anau

We had a great time and the two hours of the tour flew by so fast! The river and the lake are very beautiful and the information provided by our guide Alex was very interesting and you could tell that she really enjoyed it. I was worried that I would be cold, but that was not the case at all! We got a jacket and a life vest it was really nice and warm under them. They also had sunglasses, hats, gloves and blankets for us. The spins were fun and not too crazy. Seeing a few Lord of the Rings filming locations was the cherry on top, but definitely not the thing that had it special. I would definitely recommend!

Had an incredible experience with Fiordland Jet! Alex was an amazing guide — super knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna and made the trip both fun and informative. Big thanks to Lucy for getting us there safely and smoothly. Would highly recommend this to anyone visiting the area!

Outstanding experience from start to finish. From the welcome in the office by Alex to Zane's skippering skills, we had an absolute blast. The unexpected short walk on part of the beautiful Kepler track was a real highlight. If you're heading to Te Anau this has to be on your list.

During the Great Walks Season, late-October to early-May, the huts are fully operational with water supply, flushing toilets, washbasins, and cold, running water. There is also heating with fuel available and normally a common area with solar lighting. Finally, there will be fuel cooking facilities, but no cooking utensils. You must have a booking to stay in a hut during this season

On one hand, thanks to the work of all these volunteers the nature surrounding the great walks is still intact. I wouldn't be otherwise. On the other hand a lot of effort is spent in making "walks" out of these "hikes", which takes away the connection you might built up to the nature. You experience civilization not real nature. For quite a high price!

Recommended for those who like trekking. It can be quite tiring but the views are amazing. Makes you feel like you are part of the fellowship of the rings!

Everything is lovely in New Zealand. Best option is to cycle on this track. Lovely place to spend the evening.
