Durham Cathedral, an architecturally innovative Norman CofE cathedral, is a must-see in County Durham. Situated in the heart of Durham World Heritage Site, it boasts spectacular Romanesque architecture and houses St Cuthbert's shrine and a treasury museum.
Beautiful cathedral and very picturesque. It's free to go inside and if you are feeling fit enough, you can pay extra (£11) to climb the stairs to the top of the tower where you can have great views of the surrounding area.

This' a UNESCO world heritage site and it's a must visit. The experience was beyond words. I would recommend to walk from the Durham Market Place square, Sadler St & Owengate to experience the buildings of the old town. The Durham Castle is also accessible from the same route.
ChinHwei Y — Google review
As someone deeply interested in Christian churches and cathedrals, I can confidently say this is one of the most impressive cathedrals I’ve ever visited. The design is breathtaking, and its location adds to its grandeur it's truly one of the largest in the UK. The historic architecture evokes a sense of awe and reverence, almost melting you into the past. This cathedral has witnessed many wars and even houses a copy of the Magna Carta, which adds to its historical significance. Entry is free, although some areas require a ticket to access. The staff are numerous and always present, maintaining cleanliness and offering assistance when needed. You can pray inside, and the inscriptions on the walls are genuinely enchanting. Just beside the cathedral stands Durham Castle, making the visit even more worthwhile. This place absolutely deserves a visit you won’t regret it. A heartfelt thank you to the staff for their dedication and care.
USIF — Google review
This is a lovely cathedral to visit, in a lovely University town. It is packed with interesting objects to look at and is mercifully less crowded than some of the more famous cathedrals. For a small fee you can also climb up the tallest tower for a magnificent view of the town and surrounding countryside.
Jeremy T — Google review
Would definitely recommend booking characterful city walk with Tom. The best storyteller, great with getting group participation, lots of information and details of by gone times about Durham. The walk was approximately 90 mins and at a meandering pace, all over little pockets of the city.
Karen A — Google review
Absolutely beautiful. I loved the stain glass window. The history. The chapels. The size. Really everything about it was magnificent. Magnifying God and revealing how much faith was important
Mirna T — Google review
Don't normally like to pay to visit churches, but it's a donation and felt like excellent value given the significance and history of Durham Cathedral. Paid extra for the Magna Carta exhibit and again, worth the money and a real treat.
Gary S — Google review
A stunningly beautiful Cathedral. Worth visiting from far and wide. Many positive messages about love, compassion and humanity dotted throughout the Cathedral, the power of religion at its best.

Durham Castle, originally built in 1072 after the Norman invasion, is now a college offering B&B accommodations. The castle is located next to Durham Castle and offers stunning views of the city and river. Visitors can also explore nearby attractions such as Beamish Museum and the National Railway Museum in Shildon for a more tranquil break or historical experience.
We took the tour to be able to access the castle grounds and interior - much cheaper than expected and the hour long tour was very interesting. We visited 7 areas of the castle and learned a little about the history behind each room. There was an exhibit on display during our visit which was at no extra cost.
Chris L — Google review
Durham Castle is well worth a visit! The route you can take is fairly short at around an hour but the price reflects this and you get some excellent information throughout. We were self guided but there are tours available. The guides are knowledgeable and bring the history of the castle to life, making it a fascinating experience in a beautiful setting. A great way to spend an hour in Durham!
Matthew R — Google review
Absolutely well worth the £5 entry fee, but book in advance as they sell out and don't run every day. The blonde lady who checked us in and gave us our lanyards at Palace Green Library was perhaps the nicest lady I've ever met. She talked us through where to go, what to expect and other parts of the historic UNESCO World Heritage site to visit to make a day of it. Our tour guide (I wish I could remember her name; I want to say Dia..? She was a Literature student), was very professional and knowledgeable, and guided us through a fascinating 45-minute tour of the Norman chapel, Tunstall Chapel and Gallery, Black Stairs and the Great Hall. No, you can't go in the Keep as that's a student residence, but I feel like if the people complaining on reviews did even a minute's research before they went, they wouldn't be disappointed. You could take pictures all the way around and tour groups are kept relatively small, so you get time to ask questions of your guide. We learnt so much about the history of the historic building. Well worth a visit, but do some research first!

The castle of prince bishops of Durham. Currently used as a university college. It offers guided tours during various intervals. Its good

Such a beautiful castle really recommend checking it out and getting a tour you learn so much about it and William the conqueror and much more
Jordan C — Google review
A castle with lots of amazing and eye-opening stories and a beautiful history that is reflected in the view. Tickets are available at the library next to the right side of the castle, with time slot booking and guided tours only. We had fun 🤩 and enjoyed every bit of it!
Nupur K — Google review
Durham Castle was a hidden gem ! You need to either book in advance on line or you can call in the information center between the castle and cathedral to book your tour! Tour guides take you around the rooms you can visit, remember that this is still part of Durham University. Really enjoyable visit!
Graeme D — Google review
Durham Castle is a very beautiful small castle. The key difference from typical historical landmarks is that it also serves as a university college—many students live here, and staff work on-site. This means that, on one hand, the tours are limited in time and access to the locations where visitors are allowed (really a few in comparison to overall premises). On the other hand, it is uncomfortable for students when a group of lingering tourists walk in their home, sometimes enters the dining hall (a large, beautiful space) at the beginning of dinner, walking around and taking photos. Since there are only a few tours each day, it is definitely advisable to book in advance online, especially during holiday seasons, school breaks, and weekends.

The Walk by the river Wear offers a delightful stroll from Shincliffe to Elvet Bridge, with the option to explore Old Durham and return on the opposite side of the river. This scenic route is considered one of the best in the area, especially during autumn when vibrant foliage enhances its beauty. Along the way, visitors may be fortunate enough to spot kingfishers fishing in this picturesque setting.
Beautiful walk with my dog. So tranquil and full of natural beauty.

Lovely walk from shincliffe alongside the river wear to elvet bridge. After looking around old Durham walking back on the other side of the river. One of the best walks in this area with plenty to see, even if your lucky seeing kingfishers fishing. Best time of the year is autumn when the trees are in full colour its beautiful

Thai restaurant
Asian fusion restaurant
Asian restaurant
Zen is a contemporary Thai and Pan-Asian restaurant located on the East side of the city, offering an extensive menu with a variety of dishes such as stir fries, roast meats, noodles, soups, dim sum, and curries. The venue features a lively atmosphere and a stunning 'urban jungle' dining area with palms. Despite being popular among students, Zen offers high-quality food in a glamorous setting.
We’ve been here 3 times and every time it’s been outstanding. Food, service and atmosphere. Spice levels are true to the region. Sad that we don’t live nearby as it would certainly have our custom on a regular basis. Very reasonably priced too. Quite a stylish looking place.
Marie T — Google review
Hubby and I had a wonderful lunch at Zen. The staff were friendly and attentive and the food was tasty and fresh. Portions were good, definitely didn't leave hungry. Nice atmosphere
K S — Google review
Spectacular food, really nice drinks. Atmosphere was good we sat outside as it was a last minute booking. More of a romantic setting then a group booking.
Stephen S — Google review
I was on a work trip and found this amazing Thai- Asian dining place. I didn't have a reservation and they were fully booked, but they still happily accommodated me. I'm so glad they did because the food was incredible. The curry I had was the best I've ever tasted. It's a 10 out of 5 stars from me. Thank you team.
Mandy M — Google review
This Thai restaurant serves the BEST Pad Thai ever! So flavorful and delicious — definitely a must-order dish every time you visit. Don’t miss it!

Fab treat for those who love Thai food.We loved all of our courses at Zen, the staff were attentive and friendly. Took a mark off only because they don't have a dessert menu.
John G — Google review
Good vibes and service in this restaurant if you would like to go with couple friends. Food wise it's a little bit below real Thai food as most dishes are over sweet or salty.

Pizza restaurant
Restaurant
La Spaghettata is an Italian restaurant in Durham that offers a wide range of gluten-free options, including pasta and pizza that are authentic and flavorful. The restaurant is known for its lively atmosphere, friendly service, and reasonable prices. It also provides vegan options and is conveniently located in Durham City Centre. Additionally, the restaurant has a bar upstairs that stays open until 2am, making it a great spot for a first date or a fun night out.
The entrance was a bit hidden but it is a place that you cannot miss for their amazing foods and great services. Great portion, and the food quality was beyond expectation. They also have vegeterian options and their cheese was tasty. Simple foods, however they were so satisfying. Their staff were all very lovely and friendly. Would definetely recommend this place foor food!
Sheryl Y — Google review
Very tasty Italian food with lots of flavour. The portions were very generous. I opted for pasta with breaded chicken which was cooked beautifully. Lots of gluten free options available. Service was friendly but a tad rushed. We did go on a busy Friday night though.
Lauren W — Google review
A lovely Italian restaurant with amazing food! The spaghetti is super delicious, the pizza is great, and the desserts are absolutely delightful. The atmosphere is warm and cozy — perfect for a meal with friends, a date, or even family. The service is excellent too. Definitely one of my favorite spots!

Everything’s perfect! The taste was amazing! We visit twice when travelling Durham. Highly recommended!
Candy K — Google review
10/10. Probably the best Italian meal I’ve ever had! Great food all in all, no words can describe it.
Ting H — Google review
The food was the best for a long time. The king prawns in garlic was smothered with garlic. white wine and butter. They did not skimp on the wine. The Spaghetti Puttanesca was perfect. Pasta was a la dente and the sauce clinged to the pasta. Luscious pomedoro sauce with garlic. anchovies, onion, capers, olives and white wine. I could taste every ingredient with every mouthful. I travel extensively to Italy and Europe and they could learn a lot from this obscure Durham restaurant. Excellent 👍 Thank you for a great meal
Jose C — Google review
Good food in big portions, worth the money. We ordered the pesto penne, which was not too bad; the mushroom risotto was brilliant, the garlic bread and pizza were delicious, and the calamari was nice too. The three of us couldn’t finish all the food and brought a few takeaway boxes home after the meal—a great restaurant for lunch.

Cafe
Breakfast restaurant
Restaurant
Flat White Kitchen is a charming coffee shop and eatery housed in a renovated 17th-century townhouse. It has become a beloved spot for locals, tourists, and university students in Durham since its opening in 2015. The cafe takes pride in serving coffee from Baristocracy, an independent business that sources beans from marginalized communities and lesser-known coffee-producing countries. In addition to their specialty coffee, Flat White Kitchen offers a delectable brunch menu featuring baked goods and typical café fare.
Dropped by Flat White Kitchen this summer and honestly, I’m still thinking about it. The vibe was perfect for brunch and catching up with friends. The food? So good. Everything we ordered was tasty, but the Korean pancakes stole the show. Seriously, next level. Crispy, soft, flavorful. Would 100% go back for those alone.
Little G — Google review
Overall: ★★★★★ Food: Brunch/Coffee Spot Most definitely Durham’s finest breakfast/brunch spot and it seems we were lucky to be seated within two minutes (a queue quickly formed) The breakfast was delicious and I felt worth every penny despite it not being that big. The service was slow but they acknowledged it before anything was said and the coffee was disappointing but neither enough to merit a deduction of stars overall. Such lovely place and the cakes whilst quite expensive (£3.95 a slice to take away!) were more generous in portion size and really, really tasty. Not dry and crumbly like most places. What I liked: • Good, friendly service • Really inspiring menu • Lovely presentation • Delicious food • Plenty of options What I didn’t like: • The Americano wasn’t hot enough • Service was quite slow Do I recommend going? YES Will I go again? YES Was it good value? REASONABLY Price Point: $$
What K — Google review
The best breakfast in Durham? Very probably. Great place, my friend and I sat upstairs and were very well looked after by Siobhan, thanks Siobhan! And the food? Amazing “House Fry” which is their full English but wow is it good! Loads of other breakfast, brunch and lunch options to choose from including veggie and vegan. Oh and they have cake, lots of delicious homemade cakes! Finally have you seen the hot chocolate with separate mini jug of cream?! It was so good I didn’t can’t a chance to take a snap. Can’t recommend enough!
Paul R — Google review
Lovely as always. Just wish to have more house syrup on pancakes otherwise you get charged £2 per pot of syrup to put onto your pancakes. Perhaps need more lighting inside. Staffs are lovely.
Ashleigh-Rosalie C — Google review
Love the cosy, natural, village style of the restaurant! The effortless cared pot plants have enhanced the charm of the place. The food was in good quality.
Psyloo — Google review
We came for a day out to Durham, we ordered the steak Benedict, iced strawberry matcha and pistachio Latte. The food was one of the best brunch items I’ve had for a while, quality food and flavour. Both drinks were perfect and the service from all staff was attentive, personable and efficient. The atmosphere was quirky and inviting. Just note when coming here there is a wait, we waited around 20 minutes but our experience was worth every second. It’s a high in demand cafe.
Armani W — Google review
As the name implies, there’s good coffee here, but also good service, and really nice food. Right in the heart of the city, and spread across 3 floors, Flat White is a big step up from the usual tourist centre food. Pancakes are the specialty, but the fig and whipped ricotta on toast with Parma ham was a great combination.
Stephen S — Google review
It’s a pretty cafe. I had food and coffee in here in April and last week. The food is not bad but over priced. I had classic benedict and Korean fried chicken pancake. I definitely would recommend the Benedict, but not the pancake. You charged me £17 and only gave me two small, side pieces of chicken… Furthermore, can’t tasted pistachio in the pistachio latte… But their filter coffee smelled and tasted good. About their service, unstable and need more training! When I went in April half term, no student and not busy. The student and senior staffs who served me were friendly. However, they almost got my order wrong if they didn’t reconfirm it😅At the end I still paid the service charge as I enjoyed my time that day. Last week, I went again. There are students and kinda busy. Still, I got my seat pretty soon. After that, I didn’t enjoy my time in this cafe. No one came to take my order for like 12 minutes. The student staff who responsible for taking order on that day… feel like he ignored me. As he only chatting with other customers who came after me. But before I left we talked so I guess it was a misunderstanding. The pancake was disappointing. And when I asked to have my bill to a girl staff, she acknowledged it. And no one came to me for 10 mins. Bro I want to leave 😂! When I went to the bar, the girl didn’t look sorry at all. I guess is because most of them were making takeout orders at that time? But one of them could deal with it right? Why letting your customers wait so long??? I talked to the senior staff about it. He didn’t charged me the service fee. I think I would come again, but only for coffee and takeout.

Bistro Italiano is a bustling and cozy Italian restaurant located in the heart of Durham. The charming spot offers classic Italian dishes such as rich tomato sauces, creamy carbonara, and freshly baked pizzas. With its unpretentious charm and small dining space, it creates a relaxed atmosphere reminiscent of a favorite neighborhood trattoria. The menu also features seasonal specials alongside traditional favorites. Guests can expect generous portion sizes and friendly, observant staff.
Really nice little Italian. Small but has an authentic Italian feel to it. Good menu not over priced They do a lot of seafood and fish specials so if you like fish would be a treat. We don't so didn't try any. Staff are attentive and helpful and what we ordered was excellent. Seems very popular so would suggest booking. Parking not easy to give your self time to find somewhere Happy to recommend

The calamari fritters were not very good, I'll leave it at that. Customers on the table next to us said they had better fish from Tesco. We cancelled our mains, paid our drinks and left. Disappointing for our wedding anniversary dinner! The staff were very nice and apologetic though, lovely people.
Roelof D — Google review
My favourite Italian restaurant in Durham. Consistently good food and reasonable prices. Would recommend most of their pastas and risottos, but my favourite has to be the Carbonara - even if it's not the traditional recipe, it's amazing! Their desserts are class as well and you wouldn't go wrong with most of them, but my personal favourite is the chocolate cake. It's quite rich in flavour and not the sweetest which is what I personally prefer for desserts.
Tako X — Google review
Quite cosy. Small Italian restaurant in Durham. If looking for authentic Italian cuisine this is the place. Unless off peak, otherwise reservations is a must. We are lucky to have a table for two at 4 pm during weekend. Around 5 pm is almost full.

Managed to get a booking for two at short notice when visiting Durham. Lovely friendly service, nice menu choices (all the expected choices and some less usual ones). Quick food service. We had carbonara and pasta with vodka and prawns and both were delicious. Really lovely atmosphere, clearly a lot of regulars there and a welcoming warm vibe overall. Recommended

Food delicious and bursting with flavours. excellent service from helpful friendly staff. Reasonably priced, good value for money, good sized portions. Best fillet steak by far in durham and was cooked to perfection .

Lovely little place! We got a cheesy garlic bread for a started and I ordered the tomato and mozzarella gnocchi and my boyfriend got the calzone (which was huge) for mains. The food was lush and arrived quickly, the waiters were super friendly too.

Went in as 6 without reservation, the waitress quickly figured out to rotate a few tables allowing her to let us all fit, which is the first time I've seen something that smart in a restaurant in the UK. The food was quite good, not the biggest portions, but the prices were very reasonable.

Durham's Botanic Garden, spanning 10 hectares, was established in the 1920s as an experimental garden by Durham University. It supports teaching and research and features mature woodlands, a Carboniferous Garden, and outdoor sculptures. The garden offers diverse landscapes such as the Alpine Garden, Winter Garden, and Bamboo Grove. Visitors can explore the Tropical Glasshouse with its rainforest climate and the Cactus House showcasing desert plants.
Great day out with my grandsons and there friends. Lots to see and do. Lovely areas for picnicking. The highlight was the glasshouse. My youngest said his mum would love to come here, which we will do in the summer. Entry prices were great too, only £5 for an adult and cheaper if you are a pensioner. You can also buy a yearly pass for £20, or £15 for a pensioner.

Lovely garden. Lots of beautiful trees. I liked the sculptures too. Rain forest etc was great, the giant lily pads were amazing. Food in the coffee shop was fresh and tasty and very reasonably priced.
Linda C — Google review
We had a lovely time on a beautiful sunny day. There was free parking. The grounds are quite extensive so there is plenty of walking if that is what you want to do. The glasshouse and café are at the entrance with a garden area just outside if you do not want to explore as far. There are plenty of interesting things to see and information to read as you go around. It is a place you can go back to and become familiar with. There is an entrance fee, though it is not very expensive. It would be easy to spend a couple of hours here, just taking in the surroundings and relaxing.

Lovely and peaceful place.Plenty to see. Particularly enjoyed the fish in the greenhouse and the birdhide. Good amenities with cafe, toilets, giftshop and parking. Can take as long as you want and just enjoy the surroundings. Loads of benches throughout to relax on. Pretty decent selection in the cafe.

Beautiful gardens and lots of walkways . Lovely open spaces , trails and fact finding activities for children . Great cafe . Well worth a visit great family day out . Only downsize is the till you pay entry too is also the cafe till so there's queues and the toilet are quite small and cramped .

Lovely and calm gardens. The picnic area is adorable. The walking trail with all sorts of trees is incredible. The greenhouse itself is small, but well maintained.

A great visit for £5. £4.50 for concessions and over 60s. There's a tropical rainforest structure, which was amazing. You can push a button for a blast of mist to water the plants. There's a huge trail to walk and info boards to tell you about the plants and trees. It was a lovely day when we went. I would consider good footwear if it's damp. A great visit that I highly recommend. The reception also serves food and drinks and there's indoor and outdoor seating. Quite a large car park so plenty of parking.

Visiting Durham University for an open day, when it came to a decent breakfast the Riverview Kitchen nailed it. Nestled right on the banks of the Wear it's a stunning spot. My son and I sat in the cosy orangery and were served almost instantly by friendly and helpful staff. After a stonking eggs benedict for me, and a stratospheric stack of pancakes with maple syrup and bacon for him, we set off for our day at the uni full of sugar, carbs and bonhomie.

Ate here with my two adult daughters on a Monday afternoon. All the riverview and outdoor seats were taken and the restaurant was quite busy. Despite this we did not have to wait to be seated and were guided in by very nice and polite staff. Cannot fault the high level of service throughout our time there. They were all very courteous and attentive. Menu was laid out very well with a good choice of food. There was a GF menu available on request and vegetarian/vegan choices were clearly labelled. I had their on site prepared lemonade which was so good 👍 followed by a Thai style chicken wrap, salad and chips. All very tasty! My eldest, who is vegan, had a pulled pork style jacket fruit sandwich, this too went down very well. A very pleasant and tasty experience, I'll definitely go again!

Always a memorable day in riverview kitchen. I am obsessed with every heavenly bite this place has to offer whether savoury or sweet ; it hits the spot! The staff are always friendly and welcoming, the atmosphere is snug and cozy, there truly isn’t a better place to have your lunch

Amazing pancakes and full English, really nice vibe / decor, friendly service, food arrived super too even though they were packed. You also can upgrade from 2 pancakes to 4 for just £2 extra! We can’t wait to go back and try out more of the menu!

The riverview kitchen is always a good place to visit in Durham! The view onto the river is really nice and scenic. The food is always great here and the drinks are always presented well and the cups, glasses, plates and cutlery are clean and have no signs of damage whatsoever. The service was quick and friendly, with them happily able to answer questions and give recommendations. Our drinks came out within 5 minutes, and the scone came soon after. The menu options are great here, and the prices are reasonable for what you get. The menu is suited to everyone since everything is clearly labelled with allergens and dietary requirements. The whole feel of the riverview kitchen is cozy, warm and the lights and environment you sit in is very modern and has a lovely aesthetic to it as well. A nice view to the river also improves your visit too! The riverview kitchen is also dog friendly inside and in the outside area. The only letdown was the level of noise in here! It was full of people clearly with no consideration that there was other people trying to enjoy lunch or a light bite in there , and to also soak in the lovely view with them, phones blaring at full volume, people shouting even though they were talking to someone a metre opposite them and people asking pointless questions to waste servers time, when they could be serving someone else or starting to prepare your drinks? No one was using there inside voices in here, except for us. I know this isn’t something you can control but if everyone was considerate during our visit it could have been much better. Overall the visit could have been better due to the level of noise, but on the food and drink element you were great on! Thanks for a great visit on your side!

A very cozy and homy restaurant by the river. We enjoyed the English full breakfast set, the pancakes and egg Benedict. The pancakes came in generous portion (we struggled to finish!) The restaurant was dog friendly as well!

Faru, located in the heart of Durham, is a debut restaurant by Jake and Laura Siddle, who previously worked at a Michelin-starred restaurant. The 10-course tasting menu offers carefully prepared dishes with a selection of snacks to start. Guests can also opt for a wine flight to accompany their meal. Diners have praised the outstanding food and attentive service, highlighting dishes like wild garlic brioche and mushroom course.
Wow! What a fantastic place. A genuine 5 star dining experience in every way. From the food, service, wine and relaxed environment. Really great customer experience in terms of handling allergies too and nothing was too much trouble. A really exceptional team with no weak links. We've enjoyed several Michelin star restaurants, I'd say this is as good as if not better than some of them. Could not recommend enough. Thanks for an amazing meal and evening.

Brought my hubby here for his birthday treat and we both loved it. The outside is very minimalist and , i think but don't quote me, used to be the body shop on silver street so no parking. We chose the 4 course tasting menu but added the hen of the woods (mushroom) dish and we wanted the wine pairing of 3 wines but they also added another wine to go with mushroom dish ....sooo with the starter snacks we had 6 dishes and 4 wines 😋😋 the snacks of a crab and a chicken liver parfait were my absolute faves but every dish and wine were amazing. All the staff made us feel welcome and the kitchen was in full view with chefs working efficiently and of course silently! We will definitely be back

I wanted to to try the tasting menu but we were only in Durham for the weekend so Sunday Lunch was our only option. Service was great and the staff were very knowledgable about wine and food options. My wife and I had a lovely roast beef dinner and other menu items. I had the cheese course which was lovely. I’d highly recommend this establishment as one to watch in the future.

Exceptional meal. Every course was incredible and the service from Laura, Hannah and Luke was fantastic. We will absolutely be back and couldn't recommend it enough. Incredible!

After 20 years of tasting menus in places across Europe including Michelin star venues , this is one of the best executed we’ve ever had. Great service, fantastic wine pairings and almost completely faultless food. Will definitely be back.
Frazer G — Google review
Was it one of the best meals I've had in the UK? Yes. Was it the most well presented dinner I've had in the UK? Also yes 😀 It's what you'd expect from this level of a restaurant: just 10 tables, tinted windows, so you stare into the open kitchen (with some beautiful stained glass windows), where the chef puts every leaf on your dessert with tweezers. They offer 10 courses menu, but honestly, 5 courses is more than enough food, and you can always make it a 6 course with a cheese platter. The service is on the highest level, and the staff is happy to accommodate: we love wine, but don't drink much of it, so we split a single flight of accompanying wines, for example. Some expected "power moves" from the chef, like three different ways to prepare a cauliflower in a single dish were welcome. But for me the real highlight was the hazelnut dessert. It was so delicate I have no idea how it didn't crumble under its weight, and it looked like a piece of art. The place is not cheap, but well worth the price for the experience.
Alex — Google review
I was looking forward to trying Faru and it didn’t disappoint. We visited on a Saturday lunch time. The food was amazing, we had the wine pairing and it was excellent. The menu takes 2-3 hours to get through and every course was delicious. The kitchen is open plan and it’s great being able to watch your food being prepared. The service was also excellent and attentive. Will definitely go back again, definitely a place to go for a special occasion.

Second visit to this fantastic restaurant for a Sunday lunch. Excellent service and quality food. The option for some extras was worth it. The bread and salmon were delicious. A special mention for the mackerel, which was incredible. Great value for a gourmet Sunday meal. Original review from Jan 24..... At last, we made it for a Saturday lunchtime full menu. Food and service were exceptional. The menu was extremely well balanced, and each coarse was perfect. Allow about 2.5 hrs to enjoy. Highlights for me were the croustade, fish, beef, and the rhubarb. Very talented chef and team. The drink and wine menu was extremely reasonable for such a classy establishment. A 🌟 is surely in waiting. We are already looking forward to our next visit.

If you're looking for a unique and delightful experience in Durham, The Pawsome Cat Cafe is the perfect spot to unwind with some furry friends. This charming cafe features six adorable, fluffy residents who are eager to meet visitors. It's an ideal destination for families and cat lovers alike! To ensure a smooth visit, it's best to book your hour in advance, especially on weekends when it tends to get busy.
Cute valentine's date with my partner to a cosy adorable cat cafe, peaceful and calming around the cats 🥰 I want to take them all home !!!😍 Had a nice white hot chocolate that had elegant prints on the top of our beverages and a freshly made blueberry muffin

Lovely little cat cafe in Durham. The cats are so friendly and well looked after. They rule the roost and are put first which is wonderful. The entry fee is very reasonable. The coffee and cake was delicious and not a second thought at all. The souvenirs are a nice added touch. Would recommend.

I had the most pawsome time at The Pawsome Cat Café in Durham. If you’re a cat lover or just someone who enjoys a cosy, relaxing atmosphere, this place is an absolute must-visit. From the moment I walked in, I felt so welcomed, not just by the friendly staff but by the real stars of the show: Alvin, Poncho, Simon, Moe, Walnut, Evie and Bagel. Each cat has their own unique personality, and spending time with them was honestly the highlight of my week. Alvin was full of charm and curiosity, always ready to investigate anyone with a snack. Poncho is a total sweetheart and loved lounging nearby like a little furry guardian. Simon had such a calm, wise vibe, the kind of cat you’d expect to offer life advice if he could talk. Moe kept me entertained with his playful energy and goofy antics. Walnut was the snuggler of the group, and if you’re lucky enough to get cuddles from him, consider your day made. Evie was elegant and a bit sassy, and Bagel? Total icon. That little loaf of fluff stole my heart. The café itself is lovely, clean, calming and thoughtfully laid out to give the cats plenty of space while still being inviting for guests. The drinks were great I highly recommend the iced latte and everything just felt so well cared for, from the cats to the overall vibe. This place is clearly run with a lot of love and attention and I can’t wait to go back. Thank you to The Pawsome Cat Café for such a special experience, and please give all the cats some extra chin scritches from me.

Very welcoming environment. The staff member working was super friendly and talkative. All the kitties were super sweet. Simon, Poncho and Alvin were very sweet babies. Best of all, the drinks are cheap (£3 each) and the entrée fee is well worth it (£7 per person).
Natasha N — Google review
The cats are very sociable and seem well looked after. The £7 entry fee is a great price for an hour of cat entertainment.

Great environment, the prices were decent and faith was lovely!! I’ve been to the cafe a few times now and will definitely be returning for many more :))
Holystonks — Google review
One of the best cat cafes we've been to. The girls running it were so nice and friendly. The drinks were yummy with a choice of milks; they even offer a gluten free bake of the day! The cafe itself is small and intimate, which means you get much more contact with the very friendly cats. We went in the 15:15 slot and were delighted to find out 4pm is dinner time! And our table by the window was where the food cupboard is located, so we got all 6 cats surrounding us! Wish we could've booked a double session but they were booked solid and I'm not surprised!!! Will definitely be back when we're next in Durham. Thank you Pawsome Cat Cafe 🐱

Great place and amazing host! Had a great time. Bit tricky to find but once you spot it you've got it. Went in slightly early on the last slot of the day and got in really quick. Amazing room, didn't finish but will be back again to have a go at a different one.

3 of us entered Mr Borrowdale's Study and managed to escape with less than a minute to spare. Great experience working together to try and solve the clues. Our host was brilliant. Definitely recommend trying this.

We had such a great time at the Lumley Castle escape room! Joe was brilliant – really funny, friendly, and made the experience even better. Definitely recommend!

We done the Lumley castle escape room as our very first escape room and it was absolutely amazing! Our host was so lovely and gave us little hints that we couldn’t have completed in time without! It was challenging, exiting and better than I could have ever expected. Fantastic story line, can’t recommend enough!

Exciting Adventure at Lumley Castle escape room! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ We had a blast at Lumley Castle's escape room! Immersed in Lily the ghost's tale, the atmosphere was perfect with challenging puzzles that kept us engaged. Our host was incredibly friendly, offering just the right hints to keep us on track and even gave us extra time when needed. Overall, a well-designed, thrilling experience we can't wait to repeat! Highly recommend for a fun outing with friends or family!
Jason J — Google review
Bought the online Treasure Quest walking puzzle and it was terrible. We were stuck on the first question and it was 'Victoria' but wouldn't register because you had to enter it without a capital. Then, after a few further questions which weren't very challenging, you are told to walk 'downstream', which we did and then got very lost. When we clicked on the clue, it said to walk upstream - so the question was entirely incorrect! We gave up playing after this. Don't bother with this. Edit: I was given an apology and refund.

From the moment we arrived our host Matt was fabulous. Really enjoyed our experience, highly recommend

Played the escape room tonight with my partner and 3 of our children (21,16,15). We had an amazing time. Our host really set the mood with tales of ghosts still roaming the hallways and hinting as to what was to come. You really have to work as a team to work out the clues. The castle is an wonderful sight, especially at night. Would recommend anyone to give it a go...10/10

Aykley Wood Nature Reserve, located to the North of Durham, is a protected area of ancient British woodlands. It offers beautiful views of Durham and provides a peaceful and scenic environment for visitors to enjoy nature walks. The reserve is home to various birds and animals, making it an ideal place for a safe walk with kids. While some paths may be steep and slippery, the stunning views make it worth the visit.
Beautiful views of Durham. Birds, animals (if you are quiet enough). Trains, including occasional steam once in a while (The Flying Scotsman was there). I just wish they plant more interesting trees that also do not obscure the views. After a walk you can have a nice lunch or tea in Durham or there are places in Aykley Heads and Newton Hall (try amazing cakes from The Kitchen in Newton Hall, about 8 min walk, but call them first to check they've got the European ones).

Stunning wee spot. Not too many benches but great for a walk in the sun. Lots of great views. Good long walks.

Wonderful walking and cycling area, in Durham city, with views back to the cathedral and an alternative route to the Aniston Center. Very peaceful and quiet.

I always enjoy my time in this nature reserve where it is not unusual to encounter wild deer. Such a calm and relaxing experience walking through the meadows. If you haven't visited, you should think about going. It offers first rate views of the historic city of Durham.
Geoff Y — Google review
Lovely place to walk dogs or as a detour if walking into Durham. You can see deer grazing often. Would give it a higher rating but the amount of dog foul around is disgusting, there are plenty of bins around too.
Sarah B — Google review
Peaceful and scenic place perfect for a safe walk with the kids and their Pokémon. Some of the paths are very steep and can be slippery so may be difficult for wheelchairs and heavy buggies and for any who experiences difficulty walking (I often regret forgetting a stick), but that's Durham all over.
Y S — Google review
It was very muddy after the rain recently but still a lovely walk. I didn't see deer this time.
