The Green Housekeeper is a charming and environmentally friendly cafe that takes pride in serving home-cooked comfort food made from locally sourced produce. The menu offers a wide variety of options, including full English breakfasts, flavorful soups, tasty sandwiches, jacket potatoes, and toasted rarebit. The cafe has gained a good reputation with many repeat customers due to its commitment to using only the best quality ingredients while keeping prices comparatively low.
The Green Housekeeper is at a lovely location in Coniston - right by the town centre and at the foot of a gorgeous hill. The staff is super amicable, the ambience very cozy and the food is delicious and reasonably priced. Loved my experience of dining there!

Amazing veggie brekkie with what I think were homemade veggie sausages. BF enjoyed his full English too. Plus just look at the pile of toast! 🤤 Highly recommend! Xx

Popped in for coffees and the best walnut coffee cake on Saturday! The staff were so friendly and helpful! The food looked incredible and there was a fantastic cake selection! We'll definitely come back.

Absoloutly delicious lunch today. Homemade soup (3 choices today), plus toasty and lemon drizzle with cheesecake frosting. The staff here are all so friendly and helpful, nothing too much trouble. Definitely recommend 👌

Popped in yesterday. Had lovely leek and potato soup with a toastie and my husband had Welsh rarebit not forgetting tea pot with a cosie😊. Very welcoming and just what we needed to warm us up. Great service.
Bernadette H — Google review
Lovely little tea room with delicious soups and scones. We took a few pieces of cake home with us and served them for dessert, and everyone was raving about them. The chocolate Guinness cake was especially delectable!
Larah T — Google review
Amazing!!! 🤩 6 of us had a full English breakfast here this morning. The food was truly amazing and the service was next level. They really looked after us to a point where we felt spoilt. The homemade jam is definitely worth a mention too! We then found the cake selection and could not resist, again gorgeous!! Many thanks to you and all your staff. We will definitely be back and I highly recommend 🤩🤩

Outstanding service, very helpful and kind. They truly took such selfless care of us after a minor accident on the trail, which was heartwarming. Delicious homemade cakes and coffee. Fast service. Highly recommended.

Cafe
Herdwicks Cafe is a dog-friendly establishment that warmly welcomes both humans and their furry companions. The cafe offers a variety of options for light bites and substantial meals, with toasted sandwiches being a standout item. Visitors praise the delicious and well-presented food as well as the cheerful staff. Additionally, the cafe is known for its cozy atmosphere, making it a popular spot for cyclists, bikers, hikers, and locals to enjoy food and drinks.
Stopped off here prior to climbing up Old Man Coniston. Had the beans on toast and some of the baked goods along side tea and coffee. Atmosphere was lovely and lots to look at, enjoyed looking at the needlefelted art in the hall near the toilets aswell!
Hayley P — Google review
We visited this lovely cafe several times during our recent visit to the Coniston area. The team are very friendly and they made us feel very welcome, especially the dog! Their food and drink choices are good, the food is exceptional and very generous on portion sizes - do not miss them off of your places to go 😋
Ros A — Google review
Great dog friendly cafe with easy parking close by. Opted for a vegan sausage roll not because I am vegan but because it looked so good. It was!! Generous food portions and lovely coffee as-well. Wonderful service and a must place to stop by. Cakes and lots of other food available.
John G — Google review
Very nice family run cafe. Had a great breakfast in the outdoor area.
Mark P — Google review
Lovely very dog friendly cafe. I love the idea for the dogs to lie on the sheep rugs. My frenchie loved it. The staff is very friendly and the food was amazing. No problem to cater for dietary preferences either. Highly recommended.
Veronika S — Google review
A yummy white hot chocolate and warm cheese scone. Lovely friendly staff which added to the welcoming atmosphere of the cafe. Clearly a new staff member in for training and the staff member doing the training was supportive and encouraging. Having managed small hospitality businesses this was lovely to witness! Well done to the team, I would definitely recommend this cafe!
Murphy C — Google review
Lovely dog-friendly cafe, the food was delicious, and the staff were so welcoming they even came over to say hi to our pup with some treats. Loved the dog wall of fame too!

Definitely the best burgers in Coniston. Considering virtually every eatery serves them that's praise. Friendly personnel service, welcomed us and our dogs Frank and Betty. Fabulous ice cream. Well worth a visit.

Indian restaurant
Sara's Indian, located in the heart of the village, offers a wide selection of zesty and authentic Indian dishes to satisfy your fiery cravings. The restaurant can accommodate up to 60 people for dining and also provides a convenient takeaway service, perfect for a cozy night in after a day of adventures. While the restaurant does not serve alcohol, guests are welcome to bring their own drinks.
We had booked beforehand, but it wasn't full on the Friday night we went in here. Great food at a reasonable price. My friends had tandoori chicken livers for starters. Both like Indian restaurants and haven't seen this anywhere. They both said how nice it was but I'm not into livers. We all had different dishes and all enjoyed it. No card machine to pay though which could be an issue for some because you'd have to walk to a nearby cashpoint. I've been before and I'd go again.
Dave — Google review
Starters were quiet heavy. Not expected it to be served like that but was tasty. We ordered a starter- aloo puri, it was aloo sabji wrapped in a big puri. Onion bhaji was quite huge as well. Mains were, okay we ordered paneer sabzi it was very sweet. Overall good food. But only 1 thing that it accepts only cash. No card payments. But variety of food options you can mix and match as well.
Dhiral P — Google review
We called in for a meal after a day's walking in the area. Friends were staying so they booked us in. It was busy when we arrived. The service was great. The food was lovely. Very reasonably priced. Cash only so come prepared.
Ian — Google review
Great food and take away service. Ordered by phone and food was ready for collection on time. The quality of the food is first class. I would highly recommend this establishment if you are staying in Coniston. Just be aware they only take good old fashion cash!
A B — Google review
Amazing food amazing staff probably one of the best Indian meals I've had in a long time definitely visit.
Robert O — Google review
It was a great experience there. The food was good and staff is friendly and nice price is also good.
Hira Y — Google review
My family and I were staying in Coniston at a nearby campsite and decided to end the holiday with an Indian meal. There’s only one Indian Restaurant in Coniston, so we weren’t getting our hopes up, and expected it to be mediocre…. However the food was delicious and the service was excellent too. There’s a good selection of dishes on the menu, and the staff had a good understanding of food intolerances. It’s a “bring your own beer” restaurant, which is fine as there’s a shop a few feet away and it’s obviously much cheaper too! Their naan bread was extremely nice and the onion bhajis were enormous!
Mark G — Google review
Great food, really well-priced and generous portions. But the service was deeply indifferent. Eat in if you're happy to make the effort to get their attention every time. You can bring your own alcoholic drinks, corkage-free, which is a big plus.

Nestled by the serene Coniston Water, The Bluebird Cafe offers a picturesque setting with views of the lake and the passing Steam Yacht Gondola. This popular spot provides a menu featuring freshly baked cakes, light bites, and main courses, including options for vegetarians and vegans. Visitors can enjoy their food on a covered heated terrace while taking in the beautiful scenery.
Many many years since our last visit so was delighted with the contemporary decor, the amazing display of cakes and in particular the cheese scone with olives which was Toasted and buttery. Excellent friendly service.....dogs welcome and we'll provided for ...great view of the lake. Toilets beautifully designed and clean....although there is only 2 so in busy times you may have to use the public loos across the road. Accessible toilet available. Teas and coffees and cakes were yummy.

Our last day in the Lake District. We had to return here as we love the atmosphere and they're dog friendly. The wife had a crispy bacon roll. I however had a Cumberland Sausage Bap with onion chutney, delicious. Lakeside views inside or outside, very relaxing. I could sit here all day and watch the world go by.
Steve B — Google review
Quote expensive as it's the only food place by the lake. Also had to wait more than 30 minutes for our lunch, which was Welsh Rarebit x 2 and a kid's chicken nuggets and chips. Excellent location and relaxed vibe. Dog and kid friendly.
Wayne P — Google review
We were at this Cafe, on the shore of Coniston Water, first thing on a quiet, beautiful October Morning. Very few visitors about and the Lake looked stunning in the Autumn sunshine. We had our two Greyhounds and Galgo and couldnt have been made more welcome by all of the staff. Service was very good, prompt, efficient and friendly. The best bacon cobs I have had in many a year! What a lovely place to visit.
Ken B — Google review
Lovely spot next to Coniston Water, about a 10-15 minute walk from the village centre. The staff were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. We both had soup, 1 chunky veg, 1 tomato and red pepper and they were delicious. We sat in the covered outdoor decking area, overlooking the water taking in the lovely views.
Susan S — Google review
Right on the lake perfect views and food... gorgeous cakes and yummy coffee. A very happy place to visit with plenty of free parking 😍
Carol R — Google review
Beautiful views from the cafe. Stopped for a coffee. The place was busy and we had to wait 15+ min for the coffees after ordering, which was warm when it got to us.
Helen — Google review
Rude and unprofessional staff We have encountered the worst hospitality person from this cafe. After a nice steam boat trip we have decided to have coffee and cakes here. We ordered 2 scones, brownies, muffins and carrot cake and hot drinks. My 6 year old son didn't want the cakes so opened a packet of crisps from our bag. This very rude female staff just bursted out at my son ' YOU CAN'T EAT YOUR OWN Food HERE!" Making everyone inside the cafe look at us and leaving my kids embarrassed and upset. This staff could have spoken to us discreetly and explained the situation professionally, but instead decided to ruin our trip To the management I think you need to retrain this individual. I have been in the hospitality and customer service for 20 years and never have encountered this kind of thing. As a paying customer we are deeply disappointed. If I can give Zero star I would of. Our experience happened Sunday morning 26th of October.

Nestled in the heart of Coniston, The Black Bull is a charming 17th-century coaching inn that has transformed into a welcoming pub-restaurant. With its rustic beams and slate floors, it exudes a traditional ambiance perfect for relaxation. Guests can choose from an array of accommodations, including family rooms, making it ideal for travelers seeking comfort. The Black Bull takes pride in brewing its own ales, such as the beloved Bluebird Bitter, alongside two house-made lagers.
Ventured into the Black Bull for lunch midweek. Large selection of beers, drinks, and ales . More traditional ales rather than craft types which is somewhat typical foe the area. We found one we liked. Food was good pub fare, scampi and fries and a burger which were tasty. Though they also had a very nice menu with lots of other pub food options. Typical traditional pub grub but very much enjoyed. Bit quieter of an atmosphere than other pubs in the area, but it was midweek and out of busy season (and they seemed to be down staff, so a little worn out, but still friendly). Inside and outside seating and we sat outside. It's right on a busy crossroads and on the road, so if you want quieter head inside. If you like to people watch and watch the world go by outside is perfect. Clean and comfy area to sit. Nice place to visit, though, for good pub grub and a pint.

Visited with friends last week. We only drank (time permitted) but wanted to add a review. A very warm welcome from Tracey and the team. Fantastic atmosphere with plenty of laughs and humour. We were a party of 6 with 2 dogs and couldn't of felt more at home. Plenty of room to sit comfortably and not on top of each other. Great selection of ales. Whilst we weren't eating, we could see the food looked good from those who were. Even recommended a fabulous Taxi service (we enjoyed the hospitality a bit too much) Would definitely go back.
Joanne F — Google review
Situated at the centre of Coniston. Excellent room. We had a family room over the bank holiday we had 2 large dogs and the space was perfect for us. All the staff, I mean all the staff were friendly and couldn't be more helpful. Good breakfast and had lovely evening meal. My only observation would be all pubs an hotels serve similar menus. Fish and chips, Cumberland sausages with mash, lasagne, burgers, steak. Two fish and chips takeaways as well.Needs to be more imagination or point of difference between the outlets.
Andrew O — Google review
Had a really miserable experience here on Saturday evening after a long hike. Visited years ago and it was great but it has really gone downhill. The food was utterly dire and hugely overpriced. I'm not sure how they can make a great old pub this bad. The beer was just ok, the food terrible, the lighting was really bright and intense and it had zero atmosphere. They have complete delusions of grandeur, pushing £20 for a really poor quality burger with cold hard chips. Absolute joke.
Ben M — Google review
Ate at the Black Bull after spending a day in Coniston. We walked up to Tarn Hows Took a trip on the water Walked a bit along the side of the lake Service at the Black Bull was really good, had a non-alcoholic beer which was very pleasant. The food was excellent. Thoroughly recommend them
D ( — Google review
Excellent choice of its own (well, next door's) brewery beers, both draught and bottled. It's possible to have a "plank" which is 3 x 1/3 pt of any of the beers. A good way to taste them all. Reasonable menu and food tasty. Pleasant staff. It's really a traditional pub, thank goodness. Seating outside too.
Geoff B — Google review
I visited here recently on a travel about the region with my friend, we was met by quite frankly one of the most amazing looking areas, arguably most likely the best pub ive been too, beautiful inside and out, staff are very kind, patient and very informative, i dont understand these bad reviews because we was met with nothing but good vibes, the 'no atmesphere' is only coming from those who go clubbing or think going out to get plastered is what makes a pub a pub, but this gem in the hills is exactly what youd expect a pub to be like when you hear your grandparents stories from their younger days.
Ryan P — Google review
Disappointing Food Considering we'd just finished hiking Old Man Coniston I expected to be wolfing down my meal, but we both struggled. No taste whatsoever! I think they use the cheapest ingredients but still charge the same as all the other pubs. At least a friendly waitress offered to replace my undercooked chips (hence the 2nd star). Don't bother eating here!! Plus, a brunette behind the bar, possibly the manager, was quite rude serving. Lots of ale and beer options though.

After a big 20k hike ticking off a few wainwrights this fish a chips and alcohol free cider did the trick! Very nice place friendly staff food didn’t take too long even though was a very sunny busy day. Sat in the beer garden in the sun watching the world go by

Another late review - visited in end of May. Ordered 2 half chicken and a pizza. Food tasted good, nothing fancy. The pizza was authentic with thin crust and in a stone oven. The let down was that the bottom of the pizza had burnt flour which ruined the taste. Overall it was a good experience, but could do better with a burnt bottom.

We went in Friday afternoon around 3.30 pm 2nd January for an early tea . Ordered cheese pie , x2 gammon and fish and chips . Pie came , but the other orders were all wrong , my family had to wait 20 more mins to get the food ordered . My pie was so dry but I was so hungry I ate , chips inedible. Over cooked and rotten . The next orders finally came , no egg on the gammon , had to go back 🤦‍♀️ not nice food .. and I will eat anything and this is the first time I’ve complained! Luckily for Brother in law he’d changed his order of fish and chips to a pizza . This he enjoyed and did look delicious! The staff did seem embarrassed and flustered at repeated wrong orders being sent back . When we was asked if everything was ok , I replied truthfully, showing her the state of the chips , that we did not enjoy three of the 4 meals ordered . She apologised, disappeared and never returned . I’m not blaming the young girl but management should have stepped in and at least offered an apology of such shambles . As the pictures show , food is awful !!! Would not recommend at all !!

attached to the yewdale inn so most customers inn guests, has a weird ish vibe, very strange and in-cohesive music playlist, starters and mains brought out at same time, seat and order yourselves, waiter seemed vaguely high (?), 4 star hygiene rating, reasonable selection of food and drink, food was really good though!

Quick service after a 3 hour hike. Nice pizza, I was hoping the side of olives would be nice seen as it’s an Italian but they tasted just like standard supermarket olives. Enjoyed the Cold River and Blood Orange cider, definitely on the more expensive side.

Excellent location - we walked to Old Man from the hotel. We loved our room, really spacious which was great for all of our walking gear. Loved the tea/coffee/biscuit options. The staff were super, everyone was so friendly an helpful. We enjoyed breafast and had a lovely evening meal here too, recommend the hot pot! We'd love to come back.

We stayed for a single night. We are a family of 5, myself, my wife, and our 3 boys. The rooms were very nice and clean. The only drawback was a lack of a medium sized fan. That night was hot and only a tiny fan was provided in one room of our two rooms. The bed was so comfy and the bathroom is good and well equipped. In the morning, we had an amazing breakfast, which was included in our room rate. They will allocate a dedicated table for your group. We have order a veggie breakfast, granola, and a french toast. All of them we so tasty and delicious. The lake was nice and within a walking distance, and a nice creek on the way. They have a kayak service station available in the lake. We had a great time and we would definitely stay again in the future.

We think the best Sunday roast we can remember having. Today every item was cooked perfectly, from the crispy stuffing and tatoes, to the rich gravy. Outstanding. The staff are friendly, cheery and attentive too.

A welcoming pub right in the heart of Coniston. The atmosphere is cosy and friendly, with a great mix of locals and visitors. Food is hearty, well-cooked, and perfect after a day of walking in the fells. The menu has good variety, and the portions are generous. Staff are attentive and helpful, and the service is quick even when it’s busy. Lovely selection of local ales and a nice beer garden to enjoy on sunny days. A great place to relax and soak up the charm of the Lake District.

Extremely satisfied with our stay in The Crown Inn! This was a very spontaneous trip and we only spend a night there but the service we received was very good. The room was very spacious, clean & nicely decorated. We came with our dog and we were touched by a special “doggy box” for our cockapoo, Arthur, containing some calming treats, poo bags and a toy. Never had fresh milk in a room fridge before so that was a nice surprise! Bed was very comfy & we had a good night sleep. Very satisfied with food as well. We ate dinner and then had a delicious breakfast in the morning. Staff are very friendly and they definitely love dogs 🐶 Really happy with our stay and wish we stayed longer. We will be booking again, for at least two nights this time. Thank you for a lovely stay ☺️

This is a lovely spot for a meal, a drink and a stay in the heart of the Lakes. The inn has been taken over by the Robinson chain, and extensively renovated. Rooms are small, but clean, comfy and quiet. Food here is very good, and there’s a good range of local and national beers. A top spot to return to after a hard day’s walk in the Lakes.

This is outstanding food and service pub/restaurant 👌 👏 We pre booked the dinner table for two and it was great experience. All staff was polite, friendly and attentive. Humus starter, cumberland sausage and lamb hot pot for main and brownies for desert: this was one of the most delicious dinners that we ever had. We will definitely be back for another weekend stay 😊🍸🎉

Lovely pub, great menu! Lovely location just tucked around the corner from the hustle and bustle. Cheese and bacon burger was fantastic. Just one comment about the chicken burger for management to take note... Please don't fry chicken products in the same oil as you fry your fish! Unfortunately my partners chicken burger tasted of fish and was quite off putting which was a shame because otherwise I couldn't have faulted it at all.

Lakes Hot Spot is a unique establishment that combines a cafe, bakery, and pizzeria. In addition to the usual offerings, they also feature more unconventional choices like Polish pizza and chili jam garlic bread. Their freshly made food is not only delicious but also reasonably priced. Visitors have praised the place for its great service and welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant offers collection and delivery options for preorders, making it convenient for patrons to enjoy their delectable pizzas, pastries, and cakes.
We stayed in Coniston 3 nights on the first night we made the error of thinking we could just turn up and order a pizza at 7:30 nope they were fully booked for the rest of night. So we phoned an order in the following day to pick up and were not disappointed. I'd say one of the best pizzas I've ever had, chilli jam is an inspired topping choice. Not only that but a great service and the 2 guys working there were a good laugh. Can't fault it

A lovely place by the looks of it. Coffee was nice. Waiting literally 15 minutes for it when I ordered a takeaway was definitely not. If you know you are busy and have to serve 10 people at the tables breakfasts before you can get to my two takeaway coffees, please have the decency to say thay it will be a long waiting time and I can make an informed decision rather than waiting around for two cups of coffee...

Stopped by to grab some food to take out and fuel us up for hiking. We ordered two americanos, a ham and cheese melt, a bacon, sausage and egg bap and a pork and chorizo sausage roll. The breakfast bap was really good, the cheese and ham melt was okay apart from half of it being a bit hard - but the main reason for my low star rating is because we never received our sausage roll. After taking a bus to our starting place, we opened up the bag given to us at the cafe to take with us realising they hadn't packed the sausage roll. This was a real disappointment, we were really looking forward to trying it and it wasn't cheap either; and we didn't get to have it.

Their choice of java comes from the renowned Ozone Hodson Blend Espresso brand. Moreover, they offer the delightful Luxury Lakes ice cream. The newly introduced menu boasts an incredible chicken burger that receives high praise from customers. Equally impressive are their delicious pizzas, with the shabba being a particular favorite amongst patrons.
Just tried the chicken burger for the new menu and it was amazing 😍!! We have also tried the pizza which are also very good the shabba is my favourite 🍕 great customer service and iced latte as well!!

Ordered the Chili Pizza extra hot, very tasty, filling with fresh ingredients and more importantly had a nice kick to it! Would highly recommend this place for either a takeaway or sit down meal, the staff were very nice and the owner/chef made time to have a chat/congratulate me on the Lakeland race I’d just done thanks guys see you on our next visit to Lakeland if not before! ————— Looking at some of the negative reviews on cost, now we’ve addressed how great the food and staff are. I really don’t think you could say it’s expensive, you’d pay the same in my local area and even more if you went to a bigger chain. Given this is in a remote location like Coniston I’d say it’s absolutely spot on and if it were a couple of pounds dearer I’d still go. So if your one of these people who read 1 bad review out of hundreds and move onto the next place, break your policy and give this place a go you won’t be disappointed

The food was amazing! The menu was amazing with many pizza specials like Full Shabba, Polish, Big V ect. Me being a picky eater the menu was also amazing as you could add any toppings onto any pizza! The service was also amazing. All of the staff had constant smiles on their faces and welcomed me in with kindeness. 10/10 Will be returning 😋

As a family of vegans, veggies and meat eaters we have walked the streets of Coniston many times and left hungry. This place caters for all. The cakes are unavoidably amazing, the menu looks after everyone and I cannot say how grateful I am for that kindness. Fantastic service and delicious food. Super clean and casual for the kids. One happy and seriously relieved mummy!!

Been visiting Coniston for years and this has always been a place we've gone past and said "let's pop in there" and never have done. Made sure we went this year and we'll definitely be back. Lovely inside and every single staff member was so friendly. Didn't eat but will be doing on our next visit. Proper cosy pub.

After walking around of Coniston we felt ready for a beer, and what could be better than a traditional local Pub. The Ship it is a charming place, with nice staff and rustic environment, whrn we arrived there was a group of local musicians playing particular music that for us was really attractive as a tourists. we did not order food so I can't say something about that, but the beers and the time spended there it was really nice. 👌🏻

Loved staying here. The apartment sits perfectly above the pub. It’s large, really well appointed, clean and great for a family. The path outside leads up to Old Man of Coniston - perfect day walk. After the walk it was into the pub. The hosts and staff are so friendly and helpful - can’t fault anything. Food is excellent - the Steak and Ale pie was melt in your mouth. This was simply an excellent place to stay. Very highly recommended.

Was passing this Inn and stopped for evening meal. Superb fresh calamari followed by really tasty thin based pizza freshly prepared on the premises. Whilst really busy on the night they still managed to service all the tables. Recommended if your in the area.

Whilst the quality of the food was rather good, the service and management was a detriment to our experience. We were told in advance that because the pub was full, and at 8pm when we'd booked a table the food would be an hour so we expected an hour. We had to wait from ordering 1 hour and a half for our food, to have the starters and mains come out at the same time. That was ridiculous and should not happen. If you can't handle the amount of tables, just refuse dinner orders and table service. The food was fine also, but between a soup of the day and pizza...they are not the most time intensive dishes to make...1 hour and a half ...badly run kitchen and staff in that case. We had to change our taxi booking and whole evening structure because of the 90minute wait for a couple of soup if the day and pizzas...good beer selection tho.

Stayed over on the final night of the Cumbria Way. Nice little room , comfortable bed with all you needed and had a great nights sleep. All the staff were fantastic from the moment we booked in to leaving...(not sure where the 1 out of 5 came from on a previous review). The wood fired pizzas were massive and really nice and the breakfast was just as good. Great selection of ales and would stop a night again.

Excellent pizzas and friendly staff. We didn't book but arrived early so we were able to get one of the few tables that wasn't reserved. I'd definitely recommend booking. Good spot 👍

The food isn’t great at all. The highlight of the three courses was the sticky toffee pudding but the rest was disappointing. The rooms are average. The man at the bar honestly looked beyond depressed to be working Cheer up lad! There was no soap in the bathroom in the room just hand lotion. Good location

Had lunch here. They had a good selection and were able to modify things to suit dietary requirements. Plenty of different pizza to choose as well as hot and cold sandwiches, add other pub classics. We sat outside, though it is right on the main road so can be noisy.
Darryl B — Google review
Room was basic but clean a decent price considering the location. Food was abysmal for the price. £18.95 for a tiny pie that tasted on par with a wetherspoons pie just less filling a handful of chips and a table spoon of mushy peas. I'd recommend staying here just don't eat here.

The Sun is a charming 17th-century country pub located at the base of Coniston Old Man, offering picturesque countryside views and comfortable accommodations. Guests can enjoy delicious meals in a warm and friendly atmosphere, with options to dine indoors or in the bright conservatory overlooking the stunning scenery. The pub also caters to families with a children's menu and play area in the spacious beer garden.
We recently stayed at the Sun hotel, for the first time. We found it be close to the centre of Coniston with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. The hotel was spotlessly clean and the staff, and locals, were very friendly, polite and welcoming. Our room, although on the smaller size, again, was clean, bright and well positioned. The bar was a perfect country pub with a good selection of drinks and excellent bar food. Breakfast could be light or full English. Good quality ingredients and cooked perfectly. All in all, it was my best stay in the Lake District in 40 years and I can't wait to go back to the Sun at Coniston.

Came for dinner on Saturday. It was busy (being a bank Holiday weekend), but not too busy. I had the Steak and Ale Pie, and I'm so glad I did... it might have been the best pie I've had anywhere, certainly top 3! Great selection of beers too. We will definitely be back next time we are in the area. We were planning on going to The Meadowdore cafe but it only opened at 10, so we called here instead. I ordered a coffee (£2.80) and eggs on toast (£6) and found that it was very expensive. It came with 2 small pieces of sourdough bread which was nice but reinforced the 'very expensive' comment above. Both poached eggs were hard and if I hadn't been so hungry, I would have sent them back. I had to wait 5 minutes to get a knife and fork. Service wasn't great. Upon entering, three menus were handed over but before we'd even looked at it, we were asked if we were paying together or separate. Mid order, the staff member then turned his attention to 2 guests who came in who were residents. My friend had a full english (£12) and a latte (£3.20) and that was not good value at all. My other friend had porridge, pancakes and a latte (at a total of £13.20). I have to say that they accommodated his request for oat milk in his porridge and coffee which was good, but the prices were simply too steep. All three of us did not feel that we had any value for money here at all and would not go back unless everywhere else was closed.

Nice, dog friendly cafe with good service. Not a huge variety of hot veggie options which is why it's a four from me. I enjoyed a panini and a dairy free avocado and courgette cake which was delicious. My husband had a fish finger butty which was very good. Would recommend. Convenient location if you've walked over from Tarn Hows.

Went for breakfast while staying in Coniston for a few days. Walked past a few times and it was dog friendly and the menu looked good. We picked it mainly because of the advertised pancakes which my son was really looking forward to but unfortunately they didn't have any, but we'd already sat down so he had to quickly choose something else. We got 2 veggie breakfasts a English breakfast and a breakfast sandwich. The service is a little slow but ecerything seems to be cooked to order so it's understandable as all the tables were full. The food was nice but the portions were very sparse.. less then a spoonful of beans in a pot and half a mushroom!!! We laughed. £40 with 2 x coffees a hot chocolate and a milkshake.
Lynn F — Google review
I have worked in the lake district for quite some time and I love the area. My mother came up to visit me and we popped into this little cafe for coffee. Everything was fine until I asked about vegan cake options. The guy behind the counter's attitude totally flipped and he was being rude and sarcastic. There was a back and forth conversation between him and his coworker for about 10 minutes, as he asked her if there was eggs or dairy in a couple of the cakes. They had no idea what they were selling. And it is so dangerous for customers when you don't have any knowledge of the allergens in your own food. We decided to just get a couple coffees and say no thanks to the cake, since no one had a clue what the ingredients were. When he brought is the coffees, they were lukewarm and tasteless. (nowhere over 40°c.) My mum was kinda disappointed by this, so I told her not to worry, and I went back inside to talk with him. I explained that our coffees were almost cold and that we really just felt uncomfortable and unwelcome. He then proceeded to rant to me about how he was a skilled professional and that a mistake like this wasn't possible. I just asked him for a refund which he argued against. But I insisted. I have no idea what this guy's name was but he had a South African accent. 🤷‍♀️ (just incase you encounter the arse). At the end of the day, don't bother. I will and I will recommend the apple pie café in Ambleside. Best Café in Cumbria, and lovely people. As you can see, the reply from the owner below is a perfect example of the rude and sarky behaviour. Do yourself a favour.. Give these a**holes a miss ☺️👍

If you're wandering through Coniston, make sure to stop by the Fish and Chips Cafe for a delightful culinary experience. This charming spot is known for its delicious fish and chips, which many visitors rave about. While some have noted that the fish portions can be on the smaller side, the crispy batter and perfectly cooked chips more than make up for it. The cafe has a cozy atmosphere, though first-time visitors might find it a bit less welcoming at times.

Steam Bistro, located in Coniston, is a popular eatery known for its delicious home-cooked meals and cozy traditional dining room. The bistro offers set menus with two or three courses, as well as daily specials featuring locally sourced ingredients. The friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere make for an enjoyable dining experience. With a focus on seasonal produce, the menu changes regularly to showcase the best of Cumbrian cuisine.
I’ve been with my husband for 13 years. This was the best meal we have ever had together. Each course was better than the next. I had the beef and he had the salmon as the main. Wow! And the salted caramel bread and butter pudding was the showstopper. I would come back to Coniston just for this place. The chef I think her name is Sara, was so humble. Your restaurant is amazing x love the wine options too xxx
Jessica H — Google review
It’s not a visit to the Lakes without a visit to Steam Coniston. Our first visit to their lovely new location on Lake Road. (Handy to have free parking outside now.) We have dined with them on several occasions at each of the locations they have been at and as always the food tonight was delicious. The welcome is friendly and you can just relax and enjoy the wonderful food and drinks on offer. Saturday night is one of their bistro nights with a set menu of two or three courses. But it’s not any old set course menu as there is lots to choose from to suit all tastes and everything is cooked fresh from the finest local ingredients. The cooking, flavours, presentation and the quality of the ingredients would put many Michelin starred restaurants to shame. In a time when things are difficult in the hospitality industry Steam goes from strength to strength and still provides excellent value. We love continuing to follow Sarah and Colin’s journey and we highly recommend a visit whether for their bistro nights or for their tapas menu. Coniston is lucky to have such good food for both locals and visitors to enjoy so book a table once you know you will be in the Lakes as you won’t be disappointed with your experience. We have always had a great time at Steam. We will look forward to returning as soon as we can, if only we were locals as we would be there all the time.

What a fantastic find! We stayed in Coniston for a week’s break and were so impressed with Steam that we ate here twice in the same week. The restaurant has a really relaxed feeling, we felt right at home as soon as we arrived. The service was friendly and attentive and the food was second to none. This really was one of the best menus we have come across…we loved the choice , inventiveness and quality of the small plates and also the fact that they were not TOO small so we left the restaurant full. The drinks are worth mentioning too….I love local beers and was well catered for…the wine list was good too (recommend the Romanian Pinot Noir). Just wish we lived in Coniston so we could eat here every week! Overall score for us was 11 out of 10. For visitors like us worth knowing that the restaurant is in some units on Lake Road 5 minutes walk from Coniston village.

It’s a fabulous place located beside Lake Windermere. We were lucky, to get the table facing the lake. They have outdoor tables on either side of restaurant. Lakeside seating is worth exploring. Nestled within the picturesque Bank Ground Farm, Swallows & Amazons restaurant and café is a hidden gem that beckons both literature enthusiasts and food lovers alike. This charming tearoom, set against the serene backdrop of Coniston Water, offers a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle. With its rich connection to film history—having been featured in the 1970s adaptation of "Swallows and Amazons"—visitors can savor not only delicious meals but also a slice of cinematic nostalgia.
I went with my 8 and 10 year old. The food and presentation was lovely. A lot of the produce and edible flowers is from their organic garden. For folk interested in the author Arthur Ransome - this place is a must. We had a magical time, and as American tourists we were extremely well taken care of.

Had a really special lunch here - lots of space for the children to enjoy the scenery and games provided in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. We had a delicious steak ciabatta sandwich with beautiful salads, and kids had a platter board which they loved. Quite pricey but the food we had was worth it. Friendly and welcoming service.
Ben T — Google review
We got there about 10:30 and just missed out on breakfast so had a walk around and down to the shore line while we waited for the cafe to reopen at 11. We returned for tea and scones instead. Sitting outside in the beautiful garden but the sunny spring meant early wasp season so we retreated indoors. Fab scones and lovely tea. Decided to park there for the day and pay to launch our sailing canoe so we could return later that afternoon for a late lunch. Tried the local artic char caught in Coniston. Partner had lamb. Amazing meal that you find hard to beat at any of the fancy hotels or fine dining restaurants in the lakes. Only losing a star off perfection down to blasted wasps or we could have sat in the sun to eat. I know not the restaurants fault but at least it gives me an excuse to go back for that extra star!! It one of those places you don’t want to tell anyone about in case it gets so busy you can’t get in but they deserve all the praise.

My daughter and I spent the most wonderful time at Swallows & Amazons. The location is absolutely stunning, the service was friendly and the food was thoughtfully prepared using produce from their farm. After lunch, we walked down to the water and spent a peaceful hour taking in the beauty of the lake and skimming stones whilst our wee dog snuffled around- absolute perfection. Thank you!

WOW. What can I say. Lovely place tucked out the way. Beautiful surroundings. Wonderful staff and amazing food mostly made locally or from produce on site. This is where some on the original swallows and amazon's was filmed. Great bit of film history. We had the sharing meat platter and a couple of bluebird ales. All local stuff. Great value for money . Have a walk down to the lake after to see an amazing wood sculpture on the swallows and amazons theme.

Such a surprise to find such a gemstone close, so close, to Lake Coniston. And what an amazing place. No wonder Arthur Ransome of Swallows and Amazons fame, stayed here. What history there is to take on - the Batty family and their farm development over the years gone by and to come. The welcome, the food, the coffee (the best around!) and hospitality is so different and yet so memorably of a high standard. We shall take back happy memories to New Zealand.

Wow! the home reared lamb and Aberdeen Angus beef were equally delicious. The views are stunning and the service was friendly and helpful. A lovely find 😍

Stunning setting and food/service to match.Had scones and tea for two first visit which was the best we have ever had....the jam was unbelievable. We bought some to bring home as they sell it along with other great locally made gifts . Second visit was for breakfast. The food is top quality and the service again I can't fault. One of the best breakfasts I've ever eaten in such an idyllic setting. Would definitely recommend visiting this gem!

The Coniston Inn is a charming hotel located on the picturesque shores of Coniston Water. With informal rooms, some offering stunning lake views, it's an ideal place to unwind and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. The inn features a bar and restaurant with a terrace, serving up classic pub dishes including traditional Cumbrian breakfast and hearty meals. The Sunday Carvery is highly recommended for its generous portions of hand-carved meats.
The categories above pretty much cover it. The rooms were spotless. Did take advantage of their free pint if you forgo room cleaning while you stay. Great idea! You can still get clean towels and coffee etc if you need them. Staff in the bar area all very pleasant eager to assist. Sure, this was not the cheapest hotel I've stayed in, bar prices included, but it was perfectly lovely.

Just had a fantastic 5 night stay at the Coniston Inn. The hotel is situated in lovely grounds right next to Coniston Water, the hotel is absolutely gorgeous, the rooms are to a very high standard, the restaurant serves lovely food and the staff are really friendly and nothing was any trouble for them. The hotel is extremely dog friendly, has good wi-fi access and I thought it was great that the room had a smart TV on which I could access my streaming services like Amazon Prime and Netflix. I would highly recommend this hotel and will certainly be visiting again.

Just returned from a Walk inn break. A lovely, well managed hotel. The staff were great, nothing too much bother. Stunning location, right next to the lake, and a pleasant, half mile walk into the centre of Coniston. Very well kept grounds and very clean. A large free car park was a bonus for the lakes. The best Inn collection hotel we have stayed at so far. Very dog friendly which is a must for us.

We stayed at The Coniston Inn for 4 nights and overall had a pleasant time, though there were a few things that could’ve been better. The location is lovely and peaceful, with beautiful views from the garden and plenty of places to explore nearby. Parking was never an issue, and the room facilities were generally good. Food wise, it was a bit hit and miss. Some meals were cooked perfectly, while others (especially the veg and chips) were a little underdone. Desserts, however, were absolutely superb, and the breakfast selection and quality were genuinely impressive. That said, the food did feel a little overpriced for what it was. Our room had an extra large double bed, but it was actually two singles pushed together, which made the middle quite uncomfortable especially if you like a morning cuddle! The toilet didn’t flush properly most of the time, and the shower pressure was very weak, which was a shame. WiFi was decent, and the staff ranged from really lovely to just okay depending on who you got. Not a bad stay by any means, but with a few tweaks it could have been much better

Love this place We stayed here for a few nights a few summers ago And since then we visit a few times a year The food is tasty and it’s a great place to hang out with a coffee once in a while Views are amazing! Situated near the lake with sweet little huts to sit in outside and inside The atmosphere is lovely Laughlan is a great member of the team So friendly helpful and kind and Sarah too !! We really always feel at home as soon as we turn up and staff always look happy that we have returned and remember us every time Look forward to seeing you again soon

We were a booking of 12 adults, a kid of 10 and 7 dogs. The staff were great, friendly and attentive. I've knocked one star off due to my pheasant being overcooked and very dry in places. I'd like to give 4½ stars but only full stars are allowed and it wasn't perfect. Everything else was good.

We popped in whilst sight seeing. Our barman was a friendly Australian and the service was fabulous and we had delicious snacks. An enjoyable visit.

Lovely two night break at The Coniston Inn - very pleased it’s so disabled friendly with a lift. Beautiful hotel in stunning grounds overlooking the lake with mountain backdrop. Coniston is a favourite place of ours, lovely to find a good hotel that’s accessible. Excellent staff, room and food. Spotlessly clean. Outstanding!
