Points of Interest & Landmarks
Oshino Hakkai is a picturesque village located in Oshino Village, Yamanashi Prefecture, between Yamanaka Lake and Kawaguchi Lake. The village features eight ponds known as the "eight seas of Nunye," which are fed by melted snow water from Mount Fuji. This natural filtration process results in cool and pure spring water that has been revered for over 1,200 years.
This area seems very magical and surreal. The traditional houses are well preserved and nicely maintained. The clear water in those ponds and creek are very calming. It is a very popular tourist destination so there are many loud and annoying tourists as well.
World E — Google review
A very special indeed museum village which is an UNESCO World Heritage site. The village has 8 ponds which are considered sacred to the pilgrims who go to visit Fujisan. On a perfect day you can see the best views of Mount Fuji from the village. There is no entrance fee to visit the ponds and the village. Also a great Market is at the entrance to the village on the right side. Against a fee of 300 Yen we visited also the Hannokibayashi Folklore Museum. I personally recommend 2 hours for the visit. If you are coming by car a lot of parking spaces are near the entrance ( 200 - 300 meters by foot ). On the road from the parking spots to the main village entrance are a lot of tasty foos stalls. We ate some tasty fried baby octopuses, some Wagyu Skewers and some super tasty donuts. Jump over if you are in the region. It worth it.
Robert R — Google review
This place was beautiful and amazing to visit and experience. Even though it was a cloudy day, the spring waters were clear and beautiful. This place stays crowded, but you can escape that. Many places to try snacks and foods. The souvenir shops had a lot of good items. You can purchase fruits and many local foods. Their are walkable areas to enjoy some quietness. If you can book a group tour, it's better.
Natasha F — Google review
Beautiful place but very crowded with tourists. It’s better to visit early morning. Very comfortable to walk with your pet there. There is souvenir shop and food seller, I’ll recommend to try their mugwort rice cake and japanese peach tea.
Diva A — Google review
Very cute village and lots of vendors. However, some Chinese tourists were acting absolutely crazy over the water fountain to taste the spring water. They brought 5L water bottles to fill up the water and did not follow the line as they didn’t want to wait their turn. In that sense, the experience was terrible but nothing against the village. It’s quaint and beautiful.
Shiona D — Google review
Oshino Hakkai is definitely worth a visit! A beautiful traditional village with charming old houses, delicious local snacks, and crystal-clear mountain spring water you can drink. From here you also get stunning views of Mount Fuji, which makes the place even more special. A peaceful atmosphere combined with history and nature – truly a must-see when in the Fuji area.
Ricardo S — Google review
★★★★★ Oshino Hakkai is a peaceful and picturesque village with crystal-clear spring water and stunning views of Mount Fuji. 🏞️✨ Each pond is so pure that you can see every stone and fish at the bottom. The surrounding traditional houses, waterwheels, and small shops selling local snacks make it feel like stepping back in time. A perfect spot for photography, relaxing walks, and enjoying Japan’s natural beauty. Visiting early in the morning or on weekdays is best to avoid crowds.
Crystal H — Google review
Very nice area with plenty of shopping and food options. Village atmosphere with some modern touches. Crystal clear water ponds. The water actually comes down from Mt Fuji. Parking was only 300 yen. Nice place to stop at if your in the area.

Aquarium
Nature & Parks
Yamanashi Prefectural Fuji-yuusui-no-sato & Mori-no-naka Aquarium is a charming spot outside the touristy Kawaguchi area. The 500 yen entrance fee makes it an affordable family-friendly destination, with small marine life exhibits and a donut-shaped tank. Additionally, there's a free-to-enter playground and natural forest education center behind the aquarium. Visitors can enjoy feeding fish for free and explore exhibits featuring local freshwater wildlife.
Small place but lots to see and do here in this aquarium. Showcasing mostly freshwater fishes that are native to the area but also some others. Not sure what was the occasion, but tickets were free during my visit here. Otherwise typically entrance tickets are charged.
Janice Y — Google review
For English speakers. This is a fun small local aquarium. Be aware, nothing is in English, except for the scientific names. Definitely geared towards Japanese children for the locals but still a fun aquarium to go to see more of the fresh water fish. There are plenty of fish and since nothing is in English it took us about an hour to get through. Never seen this big of a catfish or koi fish before coming here. The tank full of the fresh water fish with salmon was awesome to see and fun for the kids. The facility is definitely a bit run down but it almost feels natural with the moss growing the way it is on the facility. All in all, if you are out this way and need something to do with the kids this is a great place to go. The Sakana Koen has a playground and a water area for kids to play in on a hot day.
Jonathan K — Google review
This place is beautiful from outside in! We loved the landscape outside, the lovely centre of displays of plants and of coz the exciting aquarium.

Small and nice, the kids enjoyed it. Toilet is available. there are some interesting Creatures. Most of the information are in Japanese, so a translation app is a must.

A quiet, peaceful place. A place for you who just want to enjoy the simple nature. The aquarium is just a very nice, neat, and educating place. They also have a study room too. Separated building from the aquarium, a place contains various of floras to study for.

Lovely place and the surroundings are beautiful. The food is delicious and steaming hot and the staff courteous. The fall colours are beautiful in November. The matcha ice cream was good. Good place for a lunch break

We can see many kinds of trout. The yamame trout, which has a colorful spot on its side, is very beautiful. There was a small stream near the aquarium, and my son played in the water.

Another unexpected find outside of the touristy Kawaguchi area. A quaint aquarium (500yen enterance fee) filled with small marine life catered for families with children. There is also a playground and a natural forest education centre behind the aquarium that are free to entry and equally nice to visit.

Yamanakako Onsen Benifuji no Yu hot spring

4.0

Day-use onsen
Day spa
Super public bath
Yamanakako Onsen Benifuji no Yu hot spring is a picturesque open-air facility offering stunning views of Mt. Fuji. The building features two outdoor roof-covered baths nestled in natural surroundings, providing a serene and relaxing experience for bathers. With an affordable admission price and various amenities such as multiple indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, and a restaurant serving delicious food at reasonable prices, this hot spring is an ideal destination for a day trip from Tokyo.
One of the best onsen at the Mt Fuji area. For men’s bath, there are 3 pools indoor and 2 outdoor (can’t take photos). The indoor pools have a jacuzzi and a cold spring water, plus 2 sauna rooms. Wow. The outdoor pools have views of Mt Fuji (too bad, can’t see due to clouds). There are cafes to eat after the onsen and areas for massage chairs. It is a nice relaxation experience one need to do after a 11 hrs hike to Mt Fuji Summit.
Amos K — Google review
INCREDIBLY Tattoos UNFRIENDLY. Not mentioned once on the website. Even covers won’t do. More Cameras in the lockers than in a bank. Baths are good but not sensational. Staff was unfriendly, it feels they are entitled for their success quite a lot to make you feel like a nobody. And that’s was also towards Natives.
Fred S — Google review
Unfortunately, we couldn't see Mt. Fuji this day, it was raining. So we spent the whole day at the hot spring, and it was really good. The food was good in taste and price, the bath facilities were really good and the rest of the space was comfortable.
Marisa C — Google review
We had an amazing experience at the Onsen. The views of Mt. Fuji from the outdoor baths is unbeatable. The stone bath was really hot! It was the perfect way to warm up.
Morgan A — Google review
Was confused at first by the “bit of Shingen Software” option on the food-ordering computer. It turned out to be some rather delicious ice cream! The onsen is lovely. It was foggy and cool when we went. When there is no fog, I wonder if you can see Fuji-San from the hot pools outside? There are dry and wet (aroma) saunas as well as a cool bath, bubble pool, and varying degrees of hot bath.
Anna H — Google review
I wish I'd try and I trust the high alcaline (>10) bath water, sauna & steam room were great but... public baths only and no swimsuit allowed (in addition to a few more prohibitions): so you must be comfortable to go publickly naked. Open at 11am.
Giovanni N — Google review
This public hot spring near Lake Yamanaka has excellent facilities that are clean and well-maintained, with various types of baths and an on-site restaurant. However, the biggest downside is that everything costs extra money beyond the entrance fee - you have to pay for towels, pay to open lockers (though they refund the locker fee), and constantly make additional payments throughout your visit. This gets really annoying when you just want to relax. The facilities themselves are good with diverse options, and it tends to get crowded. Parking is quite limited, making it difficult to find a spot. They sell Yuru Camp merchandise, apparently because the place was featured in the anime. Be very careful in the outdoor baths - the floors are slippery from the mineral water, and there are protruding stones on the bottom that can painfully cut your toes if you’re not watching where you step. Despite the irritating fee structure, the hot spring quality itself makes it worthwhile if you don’t mind the extra costs.
Minwoo K — Google review
Bring your own small towel is fine. No need to rent a big towel because you’ll dry off very quick in locker room

Enjoying Diamond Fuji from Hana no Miyako Park during late November to mid-January is possible when the sun sets on the top of Mt. Fuji. In winter, the entire area is covered in snow and snow flakes stick to branches, making them look like flowers. The ideal time to visit is typically late April to mid-May.

Overall a good camping with some indoor places for kids to play on case of rain for example. The camping spots are okay. The one we got was wide but only made of stones which is not ideal to lay a tent comfortably, and not good to put tent pegs in. Very clean bathrooms and showers.
Colin M — Google review
Almost didn’t pay the entrance ticket to go in but we were glad we did. We didn’t spend long there. We went off season but the flowers were still blooming and capture many nice shots. It wasn’t crowded when we were there so we could sit down and chill.

Summer time is too hot to visit, but there are ice cream and drinks available to purchase. Rent a peddle car is a nice way to see the park. The view of Mount Fuji from the park is beautiful.

This picturesque spot offers free parking and is an ideal location for photographers and nature lovers alike. With its serene atmosphere, visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls along the lake's edge while capturing stunning shots of the iconic mountain, especially during sunset when the Diamond Fuji phenomenon graces the horizon.
An absolutely breathtaking view! Walk along the lake and enjoy the weather and the beautiful view of Mount Fuji. We went in January, it was a bit cold, we had to bundle up but the fresh air was worth it.

The best view for mt Fuji around the lake. Free carpark next to the park. Don’t miss the paths to lakeside and try your luck capturing Sakasa Fuji (Fuji mirrored by the lake surface).

We spent our early Saturday at Nagaike Water Park and had an absolute blast! It’s the perfect spot for a fun day out with the family. The splash areas were clean, well-maintained, and just the right size for kids to enjoy safely. There was plenty of shade and grassy areas to set up a picnic, and the whole place had a relaxed, family-friendly vibe. The water was refreshing, and the park layout made it easy to keep an eye on the little ones while still enjoying the scenery. We’ll definitely be back this spot is a gem for warm-weather weekends!

If is superb location for sunset and flower too. It is located just slightly pass Nagaike-iriguchi. The venue was awesome too compare to the usual park that everyone else goes. Slight feedback for those traveling by bus, Kindly travel back before 5pm because when the sun goes down transportation is not as easy at night unless you are fit to travel by foot

Best view to see mount Fuji at Yamanakako. Very quite, a lot of parking space. There’s also have gazebo to enjoy your food. Big bus can’t park here. Only small car and microbus can park here

This is certainly one of the best spots for viewing Mt. Fuji up close, and beautifully reflected in Yamanakako - both during the daytime, and as the sun sets behind it. We were there on a weekday, and although the parking lots were busy, we had no trouble getting a spot. In addition, there are some nice cafes nearby - again with great views looking out onto the lake.

Soba noodle shop
池本茶屋 is a popular restaurant located in the center of Oshino Hakkai, known for its delicious grilled fish and satisfying soba noodles made from local wheat. The atmosphere is amazing, with Mount Fuji in the background. While some visitors found the soba to be just okay, many praised the fresh catch of the day and appreciated that English translations were available on the menu for tourists.
This restaurant was very crowded on Sunday 12pm. Queue time about 20 minutes After we were seated, it was very difficult to gain the attention of the server to take order. Another 10 minutes wasted. The grilled fish we ordered was very delicious and fine. It was one of the best grilled fish I ate so far. 5 stars Grilled prawns was quite disappointed. It's not fresh, but ok to try. 2 stars The soba was delicious. Very special made by Mount fuji Water. Smooth, bouncy, and addictive even on its own. Tempura prawn was with the noodle as a set, and he tempura wad delicious and great compliment to the noodle. 5 stars

The Ikemoto Chaya restaurant was great for a quick lunch. I ordered udon noodles with mountain vegetables. It was served fast and was very tasty. This is not a fancy restaurant; it's a place to sit down, eat good food, and continue on your trip. Recommended!
Gaby G — Google review
Came here for the views, but stayed on to try the grilled fish. Totally worth it. The fresh, freshwater fish grilled over strong flames with just salt, so fresh and the flesh was extremely sweet. Not a bit of fishy-ness coming from the insides of the fish as well. Price was a bit steep for the size, but for the quality and the taste experience definitely worth it.

Great place to try Japanese fish!! Only 1000 yen and they have 3 kinds of fish. Great selection of cold and hot soba or udon! Highly recommended. Free flow of green tea and water. Have to take the pot, put the green tea bag inside and pour the hot water yourself. Great service

Restaurant Ineya is a down-to-earth eatery that specializes in international beef recipes and salads. The homey style cooking offers very reasonable prices, with the best Hamburg steak and delicious curry dishes. Located just a minute's drive from Ninja village, it provides an excellent dining experience with fresh, lovingly prepared food at fair prices. It's considered a hidden gem by many due to its great food and affordable prices.
To Restaurant Ineya: I will soon visit Fuji area and want to lunch in your restaurant. But I am a vegetarian who can't eat alliums (onions, garlics, leek). May ask if any vegetarian food (e.g. tomato pasta) can be specially arranged? Thank you so much!

The food was excellent with top-quality meat. They also have rare Burgundy wines that are hard to find. The owner provided outstanding service and great recommendations. I’ll definitely be coming back again!

10/10 recommend! One of our favorite meals on our trip so far. We ordered the wagyu beef steak (incredible grade/quality), vegetables, bibimbap, kimchi, and cold tofu. The owner and staff were some of the kindest and most welcoming people we’ve encountered abroad, it was heartwarming. Amazing food and experience, must try!!

Such a wonderful restaurant with the best beef I have ever had! The wagyu rib was so tender and flavourful. We ordered: wagyu rib, rice, kimchi (incredible), egg soup and tofu. The staff were so kind and made sure we enjoyed ourselves, the prices are reasonable too.

The meat was delicious and the owners were so nice. They have an English menu available, and the servers try their best to communicate with you :) if you are passing by, please do try this restaurant as it is really amazing ! Definitely going to go back there if we’re in the area !

Day 2

Northwest side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the northwest side side of town. Start the day off with Fuji-Q Highland, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Arakurayama Sengen Park. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

Theme Parks
Fuji-Q Highland is an amusement park located near the base of Mount Fuji in Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi. It's a popular destination for thrill-seekers with its impressive collection of rides, including Takabisha, the world's steepest roller coaster, and other famous coasters like Eejanaika, Do-Dodonpa, and Fujiyama. The park also offers two haunted attractions - Hopeless Fortress and the Haunted Hospital.
Must-visit place for Naruto and rollercoaster fans. It was my first time in the rollercoaster and it was terrifying, but still fun 🤣 Naruto fans will have more than enough content to have fun with. Food is good, but a bit expensive considering the amount of it (still normal as it's amusement park) There are FREE tickets for just walking in, one-enter tickets and one-day tickets. The paid ones allow you to enter all attractions for free, but you still have to wait in the queues if you don't have priority pass for specific attraction.
Sebastian T — Google review
This is my 2nd visit to Fuji-Q Highland, and I was worried about how the day would pan out as my last visit was atrocious! However, let me say that today was a very pleasant surprise! I paid for the priority entrance, which gets you into the park 30 minutes early (which is massively worth it). Head for the big coasters first - Zokkon and Fujiyama, as they get the biggest queues! They have a lot of great attractions, but make sure you read the opening times of all attractions as some things do close at 1.30pm and some open later in the day. They do have a detailed maintenance schedule on their website, but the opening and closing times did catch me out on my last visit. Also, attractions will close early depending on the queue times (for which they make announcements around the park), so make sure to plan everything you want to ride in time. There are vending machines next to each ride to buy fast passes, which is handy at busy times! The food stalls in the middle of the park are great, I had the Indian food which was lush. They are well-priced, too. There are lots of vending machines all around the park. There are at least 5/6 gift shops with lots of cool merchandise. There is also a 7-Eleven outside the park! Great for fussy eaters or cheap snacks! When visiting, make sure to plan ahead and get there early for a head start as when it's busy, it can be very unorganised and stressful.

We went on a Monday in late October, and it wasn’t too packed. At most we waited an hour for one of the big roller coasters. If you are looking for a park with some of the best roller coasters ever then this is it! We loved Takabisha so much, it was scary and exhilarating all at the same time! Eejanaika is going to mess with your mind, all its twists and turns. But there are other great rides too, a special mention needs to be made for Tondemina (La pizza) ride that was fantastic. This park is filled with thrills. We had the Fuji pizza which was great. As a tip, the all day pass lets you re-enter, we went back to our hotel then returned at night, well worth it. I’ve read reviews that say the safety checks take a while and they do but honestly I was glad for it. Was it worth the money? Absolutely! I’d love to go again on a clear day when I can see Mt. Fuji.

Amazing rides - better than any other amusement park i've been to. They lack the intricate themes other amusement parks have (e.g., Disneyland) - more bare bones adrenaline rush. And they are very good at this - rides are so fast and frenzied that it's actually important to listen to the instructions and maintain the posture they tell you to have. They require emtying all pockets before boarding rides, and also remove glasses (they didn't even allow using goggles). They have free lockers at each ride. There are some vegan options in the food court (vegan ramen and curry). Amusement park food, not bad but not good either. there is also a Starbucks with some vegan snacks and vegan lattes. When we were there the lines were very short, so we would probably could have done without the priority tickets we bought. But I read and heard that in most times the lines are very long, and priority passes are recommended. We bought everything in the fuji Q website - if the site crashes, try turning off the google translation - it worked for us.

Visited Fuji-Q Highland in May 2024 and it was amazing! The roller coasters like Eejanaika and Fujiyama were absolutely thrilling. The park was clean, staff super friendly, and the view of Mount Fuji made it unforgettable. Lines can be long, so go early or get a fast pass. A perfect mix of excitement and scenery — totally worth it!
A A — Google review
We went on a Autumn Thursday so there weren't that much lines! We were able ride all the rides that were open that day. They closed some down pretty early like the pizzala and the paniclock. I think Dodonpa closed down. However, the must-try rides for speed and thrill that are usually open are Fujiyama, Takabisha (the vertical drop was amazing), Eejanaika(fast and fun), and Zokkon. The Naruto village was a great place for me since Im a Naruto fan!
Ian F — Google review
Awesome theme park, Free entry pay per ride. 2000 yen for most expensive rides, Short wait time for rides wasn’t busy atoll rain or shine. The rollercoasters seem to stop in the rain though so keep that in mind. Food in park great and has a Starbucks. Highly recommended
Al G — Google review
This is also one of my favorite places. You can visit it all year round because the atmosphere changes with each season, which I really like. Even though I’m not a big fan of amusement parks, this one is okay. There are cafés, food trucks, and gift shops inside. However, the food and drinks are a bit expensive, so make sure you’re okay with that — you can also bring your own drinks. If it rains, most of the rides will be closed, but there are still other things to enjoy, like the haunted house, which I especially recommend.

Mountain cable car
Transportation
Tramways
The Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway offers a thrilling cable car ride that takes you to Kawaguchiko Tenjozan Park, where an observation deck at 1,075 meters provides breathtaking views of Mt. Fuji and the Southern Alps. The 3-minute ascent treats visitors to unobstructed panoramas over Lake Kawaguchiko, with the added bonus of colorful maple foliage during the autumn season.
The Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway is such a fun and scenic experience! The cable car ride takes you up to a viewpoint where, on a clear day, you get an incredible view of Mount Fuji. Unfortunately, it was super cloudy when I visited, so we didn’t get to see Fuji in all its glory but that’s just how Mother Nature works sometimes! At the top, there’s a small food and ice cream stand. I totally recommend grabbing some ice cream, especially if you’re visiting in June when it’s starting to get hot. There’s also a swing you can ride for a small fee (I believe it was around 500 yen) a fun little bonus if you're into unique photo ops. If you keep walking past the main viewing area, there’s a higher spot that gives you even better views and more photo opportunities. Just be careful it gets pretty steep and hilly, and if you’re not paying attention, it’s easy to slip or lose your footing. Overall, even though I didn’t get the perfect view of Mount Fuji, the experience was still really cute and enjoyable. Definitely worth a visit!
Elba P — Google review
Overall it was a good experience, however they could manage the boarding a bit better. We had to wait 10 minutes to go up, which was fine, however on the way back we had to stand around 15minutes in sun and around 30 overall. Unfortunately we didn't have a good weather, Mt Fuji was clouded, but there was a stunning view over the lake and good panoramic view. They serves food ( you could purchase it ) and there were vending machines however drinks were from 300 Yen

Great experience overall. Depending on the weather it can be a complete different story for sightseeing the Mont Fuji. I stayed at Kawaguchiko for several days. The second morning the bad weather left for a few hours. I went to buy tickets a second time right at the opening of the shop, even though there were already people, I didn't have to wait for the lift. I only waited 30 secondes to buy the ticket at the vending machine. Be careful of the timing, when I left, there were so many people waiting for the lift, I guess the last ones had to wait for at least 30 minutes before taking the shuttle and the weather was hot. Since we had a very cloudy weather for a long time it was easy to guess everyone would jump on the occasion for taking good pictures of Mont Fuji, before leaving for another city. There are several activities up there. If you have a lot of time, I believe there is also a trail. It says on the signs you need 6 hours so watch out for the last shuttle, and this is at your own risks. I went to check a little bit. On the track I met several people going back to the crowded main spot but then after maybe 2 minutes there was no one anymore. I stayed close to a small shrine for about 15 minutes. You can still see Mont Fuji and landscape from the forest. The peace and the wind between the trees felt amazingly refreshing. You could still walk for a long time, but I decided to go back downstairs and enjoy my day an other way.

Decent place. There is a ride up on an aerial cable car with windows from all sides. They let a limited amount of people on per ride so you're guarenteed to see a great view. There are unfortunately just 2 cars so to get on/off is a bit of waiting in line in the sun. On top there are swings that face Mt Fuji and can be mesmerizing. There was one working telescope, and a little store selling snacks and drinks. The ice cream was fantastic. It was a perfect fit for the trip up. There is also the legend of the mischievous usagi (rabbit) with stories setup before boarding, and a shrine at the top. The main part is the view of Mt Fuji... it unfortunately depends on the weather. It is a great location to see the mountain but when we went, the peak was covered with clouds. We only saw it on our flight. You also get a good view of the theme parks below.
Kris R — Google review
This Mt. Fuji viewpoint is beautifully landscaped with authentic Japanese-style flower gardens. Every corner looks picture-perfect, offering a stunning mountain view. It’s a pity that the fog was thick today, so we couldn’t see the peak of Mt. Fuji.
Panuwat P — Google review
This was a good experience but the queues were insane. Maybe because it was a holiday weekend, or maybe it's like that all the time. The views from the top are amazing, but after taking a few pictures I got back on line to go down. It was a two-hour experience which 1 hour and 45 minutes was spent standing in line. The ropeway is less than 10 minutes riding up and down. If you want to explore or wander, be careful of bears. The line does not get shorter.
Sheldon J — Google review
Not worth it if you can trek for 45min. It’s very crowded and can take up to an hour in the quene for a 2min rope way. The views could be nice but it’s a hit or miss. Try to go towards the right end of the rope way as you can’t see the mt Fuji anyways The trek is worth it with great views. The way is marked and you can’t get lost.
Anish K — Google review
We went in Summer Aug 2025. Very nice views, easy and short ride up. We went in the morning 9am+ so no queue at all. The area on top is not big.. just one snack shop and one souvenir shop, as well as the swing. Quite easy walk, so won't take long up there, other than the ropeway queues. There was a very long queue when we came down back around 10am+ We were there a day earlier in the cloudy afternoon 3pm+ and the ropeway was closed due to potential lightning. So do come by earlier if you don't wanna miss this place. No, that wasn't Mt Fuji's ash cloud, just the normal cloud trying to be funny...

Chureito Pagoda, located in Arakurayama Sengen Park, offers an iconic view of Mt. Fuji and is a popular spot for capturing picturesque photos. Accessible via 398 steps, the pagoda stands behind the five-story structure and provides a stunning backdrop of the mountain. While it can get crowded during cherry blossom season and autumn, visiting in February may offer a quieter experience with fewer visitors.
What a special spot! We hiked all the way up to the totally overcrowded main pic spot and then somehow had it in us to keep climbing. So glad we did!! Just a little higher up and there were next to no people and much more space to enjoy the view. Awesome little food trucks and lots of restaurants to explore at the base. There is a great little booth selling pictures and little souvenirs. All cash! I can’t even imagine how beautiful this area is in peak cherry blossoms. We were on the early side of season and nothing was in bloom here yet. Most people seemed like they were there on a tour, they got lucky it was a clear and sunny day. Just the day before was snowing and completely cloudy. We came over for the day from Hakone by taxi which was on the expensive side but so so worth it. We wanted to have the flexibility to come on a clear day and it turned out to be the best move all trip!

Chureito Pagoda: Great Effort, Small Reward The visit to the Chureito Pagoda is a classic example of excessive effort for an insufficient payoff—unless, of course, you luck out with the perfect day. The frustration begins immediately: an exorbitant parking fee of 1,000 JPY is demanded on almost every street corner, giving the feeling of being squeezed by tourists even before starting the climb. Next comes the exhausting ascent up hundreds of steps. This is a significant physical effort that certainly leaves visitors with high expectations for what awaits them at the top. But to great disappointment, the pagoda itself is not particularly impressive. It's nice, but it hardly justifies the arduous climb. In fact, the entire experience hinges on visibility: If you are lucky enough to have a clear, sunny day where Mount Fuji is revealed in all its glory and perfectly frames the red pagoda, then the picture is worth a million yen, and the effort is justified. However, if you arrive on a hazy, cloudy, or simply low-visibility day, the whole experience turns into a waste of precious time and energy. Bottom Line: It's only worth visiting if you are absolutely certain that the visibility to Mount Fuji's peak will be perfect.

I went at 5:30am in the morning thinking the crowd wouldn't be so bad. There definitely was a crowd there to see the iconic view of the pagoda and Mt Fuji. But the crowd wasn't too intense. Majority like minded "travellers". Too early for the mainstream tourist and influencer wannabes. The next time I think I would go just before daybreak and watch the sun rise over the majestic mountain. If you're thinking about taking the stairs up, it is a bit of a hike up, so be prepared. Don't be ashamed to have a stop and drink some water. There's a toilet at the top as well. And if you want the trail continue into the mounting going to the other side toward Lake Kawaguchi.

Chureito Pagoda is one of the most memorable places we visited in Japan. The climb up the stairs can be a bit tiring, but the view at the top is absolutely worth it. Seeing Mount Fuji framed behind the pagoda feels almost unreal. It is a place full of beauty and peace, and definitely something to experience at least once in a lifetime.

On our trip to Japan, my wife really wanted to see Mount Fuji from this top rated location. Not many people know that there is a dedictaed website that shows visibility level of Mount Fuji and provides hourly updates. We took a bus from Tokyo (Shinjuku station) to Chuodo Shimo Yoshida station and walked to the pagoda to see this stunning view. The walk to the entrance of pagoda is about 20 minute and then up to the pagoda is another 15-20 minute hike but definitely worth it.
Rushi G — Google review
We arrived at 715am on a cloudy October Tuesday morning. The pagoda is surrounded by beautiful forest, the observation deck serves to give you that magic photo with the pagoda and Mt Fuji behind it. We didn’t see the mountain today but it was still a beautiful sight. There is quite a walk to get to the pagoda up stairs or going around a winding path. There were signs warning you about bears (we didn’t see any) and there were hardly any people at this time of day. You can bring your dog for a nice walk too if you like. Parking is available, it seems you must pay for all or most of them but it’s worth it. It’s sad we didn’t get the ‘magic’ shot but it was a peaceful walk in a lovely area.
Kyle W — Google review
I first visited there around April — it was really nice. The cherry blossoms were beautiful, and the weather was perfect. After that, I went back a couple more times. But when you walk up the stairs, it can be a bit tiring, so make sure you’re ready. As some advice, wear something you can easily take off if it gets too hot, and don’t forget to bring some drinks with you.

Arakurayama Sengen Park is a picturesque park known for its stunning views of Mount Fuji, a vibrant five-storied pagoda, and seasonal cherry blossoms. The park's iconic landscape has been featured in various media and is a popular spot for capturing the beauty of Japan. With its majestic shrine and breathtaking scenery, it's no wonder that this park is considered one of the best places to view Mount Fuji in the Fuji Five Lakes area.
Gorgeous scenery when you make it all the way up to the outlook area. The walk can be tough, definitely prepare for the weather because you will get extremely hot climbing the 400+ steps up the mountain. Japan humidity is insane. Felt so lucky to see Mount Fuji so clearly on this day.

This was my second time visiting this place. This time, I went by bus with a Japanese co-worker who kindly arranged the transportation for us, allowing us to experience the scenic ride to the area. The location is quite elevated, so I recommend visitors be prepared for some uphill walking. Doing regular physical activities like jogging, walking, or running beforehand can definitely help you handle the climb to the observation deck more comfortably. We visited in June, and the number of tourists was noticeably lower compared to the peak months of March and April, making for a more relaxed experience. There are public toilets and a drinking fountain (faucet-style) available in the area. You might notice warning signs about bears and monkeys, though we didn’t encounter any during our visit. There’s also a small restaurant nearby that serves ramen, karaage (fried chicken), and sells souvenirs. A good spot to rest and enjoy a meal after the climb.

Going up was like hell. I’m not that fit, and those stairs really destroyed me. I had to catch my breath with every step I took. But once I got to the top, the view was absolutely mesmerizing. There was a big cloud covering Mount Fuji at first, so I waited and waited until the sky finally cleared. I’m glad I did, because after putting in all that effort, I didn’t want to just stare at clouds, lol. In the end, I’m really happy I made it up there and got to enjoy such a beautiful view.

Amazing view specially if Mt. Fuji shows during your visit. Always crowded so having a good photo without photo Bomber is hard to get. Note: No Entrance Fee but long hard walk. Not suitable for little ones. You need to climb the 398 stone steps to reach the top of the shrine for better view. Drink lots of water . Perfect time to visit: spring and winter

Shaw's Sushi Bar & Dining is a unique sushi establishment near Kawaguchiko train station in Yamanashi, Japan. They are known for their exceptional sushi and the use of rice flour for their tempura batter, catering to those with celiac disease. The restaurant offers gluten-free soy sauce upon request. Despite being a bit pricey, the quality ingredients and exquisite presentation make it worth the cost.
We had a delicious meal here last night, everything was so fresh! The staff were very accommodating with my partner's gluten allergy. Fresh seafood and quality ingredients. We got the vegetarian and gluten free set meal, the blue fin tuna set meal and the assorted tempura. Make sure you line up as they are only open for a short window at lunch and dinner. The best meal we have had in Japan. Highly recommend!

A 2 minute walk from the station and a gem to have your first meal in this beautiful town. We luckily got seats immediately but one sushi set option was already sold out. We chose the vegetarian set meal- it was superb. The colours, texture and balance was incredible. The veg tempuras were crisp. My son enjoyed the Sashimi Bowl meal. Fresh and filling.

Amazing sushi! The fish was some of the most fresh I have tasted in Japan. Everything was well executed. They sell out of items very fast and are only open for an hour and a half. So if you want to go plan to show up at 6pm when the doors open. It's definitely worth it though.

Very nice set meals which I am sure everybody will fine something suitable. We had the salmon set which comes with 3 small rice bowls of 3 different types of salmon. Sanrokuen is a traditional barbecue restaurant located in a 150-year-old building that offers an authentic dining experience reminiscent of ancient Japan. Diners can cook their own food on skewers over a charcoal grill at the center of their table, choosing from various set courses featuring meats, seafood, tofu, and vegetables. The restaurant's rustic ambiance with a thatched roof and dark wooden interior beams adds to the unique dining experience.
Food is absolutely amazing, and the portions are very generous. I ordered one ramen and a combo set with ramen, fried rice, and a raw egg on top. Everything was delicious, especially the rich, flavorful broth and perfectly cooked noodles. The fried rice had a nice smoky taste, and the raw egg added a creamy texture. All of this cost only about 2,000 ¥, which is a great deal for such a satisfying meal. Highly recommended!

Sanrokuen 山麓園 is an excellent place for a traditional, authentic Japanese robatayaki. The restaurant is in an over a hundred-year-old building. I am happy to have an enjoyable experience with all my family and friends in our Mt. Fuji trip. The restaurant is fantastic, and the ingredients they use are very fresh and of the highest quality. They also offer the best service. However, please don’t forget to make a reservation. Sanrokuen is usually booked weeks in advance.

It’s an unique experience though on a higher end side. We ordered the 22k yen premium set for 1 which was enough for 2. It will be better if there are more instructions and guidance given to grilling the food as I was stupidly watching my neighbours how to cook certain dishes

Restaurant Konami is a highly recommended dining spot, especially for foreigners due to its proximity to other restaurants. The portions are generous and reasonably priced, and most importantly, the food is delicious. The menu offers a variety of options such as hotpot with noodles, pork katsu curry rice, roast pork with rice, ebi tempura tonkotsu unagi set, gyudon, and more. Despite potential wait times due to its popularity, the fantastic food makes it worth it.
The food is very nice, comes in big portions, and is priced generously. I am a tourist and I have visited this restaurant every time I visit Kawaguchiko. There is a waiting area and clean toilets. In terms of seating, there's a tatami option and there are also tables and chairs. The restaurant offers a brilliant view of the Mount Fuji especially in daytime. 🗻 I would love to come back again.

Tried 2 set meals both are delicious, especially the way the yamame and pond smelt are fried. Seems to be constantly crowded but no big issue waiting inside after filling names in a list. Nice interior decor and spacious dining environment. Good overall dining experience with a moderately extensive menu.

A cozy atmosphere, a medium sized restaurant next to the hotel, with a lakeside view. The food is delicious and served quickly, and there’s an English menu available.

Seems like a locally owned restaurant. Average food selection and quality. Service was decent. Restaurant had a very nice scenic view. Price is decent too. However the bathrooms are super dirty

They have an English menu, great choices, delicious tempura meal, huge and very filling and many Hutu noodle dishes on offer. Very reasonably priced. But not ideal for group tours and big group because they don't have a reservation .

Our favorite place to eat in Kawaguchiko, with great meals and very friendly service. Menu is available in many languages. Hoto (flat noodles) soup warmed up the cold day. Definitely will be back. Seats are available in traditional and modern style.

Day 3

Proximity is everything
For day 3, we bundled attractions like Kawaguchiko Music Forest Museum and Kubota Itchiku Art Museum and other places within a close range, so that the time it takes to travel between all of them is less than one hour. Combined with the average time people spend there, your day should take about 8 hours.

The Kawaguchiko Music Forest Museum is a must-visit for music enthusiasts. Housed in a charming European-style building, the museum showcases a remarkable collection of antique automatic musical instruments dating back to the early 1900s, including an orchestrion originally intended for the Titanic. Visitors can enjoy daily performances by these instruments as well as weekly live operas and other musical events, with a focus on weekends.
This remarkable attraction combines the charm of a meticulously crafted French village with an extraordinary collection of automated musical instruments, creating an experience that feels like stepping into a fairy tale. Modeled after French architecture, every building showcases beautiful Cinderella-castle-style design that provides endless photographic opportunities throughout the grounds. I arrived late in the day when Mount Fuji was completely obscured by clouds, having exhausted other sightseeing options, and entered more out of curiosity than expectation. What I discovered was far beyond anything I had anticipated. The admission fee includes access to scheduled musical performances featuring massive automated organs, live opera singers, and grand automated music organ concerts that demonstrate incredible engineering and artistry from a bygone era. What truly impressed me was witnessing the staff’s dedication during closing time, as they carefully maintained and adjusted the numerous antique automated instruments with obvious expertise and care. This daily ritual speaks to their commitment to preserving these mechanical marvels for future visitors, ensuring each performance maintains its magical quality. The gift shop offers an extensive selection of music boxes in various sizes and musical selections, plus unique items like violins. While perhaps not as comprehensive as Hokkaido’s famous Otaru music box shops, the quality and sound of their music boxes are genuinely beautiful and worth considering as souvenirs. The magical climax of my visit occurred when the clouds suddenly parted, revealing Mount Fuji in perfect view from the French village setting. This unexpected moment created an absolutely breathtaking backdrop that had every visitor frantically capturing photos of the stunning combination of European architecture and Japan’s most iconic mountain. The contrast between the French-style buildings and the majestic mountain created such a surreal, picture-perfect scene that it felt almost too beautiful to be real. This destination successfully combines cultural education, musical entertainment, architectural beauty, and natural scenery into one cohesive experience that appeals to visitors of all ages and interests.

This place is just awesome and full of music. Live music events during the day in different halls. I really don’t know how to describe the place , it’s a big museum and shop together all around music. All in one it worth paying the entrance fee - 1500 Yen / pers. At the entrance you’ll receive a leaflet with the music events ( hour and hall ) and I warmly recommend to see them. We saw that there is also a restaurant on site. Didn’t enter so we cannot say hoe it is. If you are in the area and you are a music lover and love to see musical instruments we highly recommend this place. By the way there are o lot of shops with wonderful stuff. We spent there approx 2,5 hours. If you are coming by car there is a huge parking place just across the street , just in front of the museum on the other side of the road. Enjoyyyyyy !!!!

This is a very beautiful music forest. Not only can you takes many pretty inside, but can also enjoy their amazing music performance. I recommend you take at least two hours here to find its beauty. By the way, their souvenirs are also very special!

We saw the Moving Kamishibai Sand art storytelling artists backed by live musicians. It was spectacular and very moving. Highly recommended! Wish we had more time to discover the rest of the performances...

A must visit for those who likes old pianos and musical instruments--this place has a massive collection. We were able to catch one "Opera" performance and the Opera Singer was really good! You can tour around the place for about an hour, it's quite small. I liked that they have a shop of Studio Ghibli merch! But if you prefer to be with nature, or not really a fan or old organs and recorders, you can skip this.
Hannah M — Google review
A very good music museum with many performances to enjoy. In Japan, you can enjoy the scenery of distant European towns and the wonders of Mount Fuji. The ice cream here is also delicious. It is highly recommended to come here.
Fall A — Google review
Visited on a rainy day thinking it would be a good wet weather activity but the museum is mostly not sheltered, except the performance halls. Nonetheless, they provided umbrellas that made exploring the museum much more enjoyable despite the weather. I only managed to catch two performances—the opera and organ— and thoroughly enjoyed both. I definitely regret not arriving earlier to experience more of them. The gift shop also has many interesting souvenirs, especially music boxes for a variety of music pieces, from classical to pop or even studio ghibli tunes. I would really suggest setting some time aside to browse even if you don't intend to buy anything. Lastly, the museum was pretty with flowers and photo spots, and I even managed to catch a glimpse of mt fuji despite the bad weather. Would definitely come back again next time!

Museums
Nestled on the outskirts of Kawaguchiko, one of the five lakes at the foot of Mount Fuji, is the Kubota Itchiku Art Museum. This museum is a tribute to the renowned textile artist Itchiku Kubota and showcases his work with kimonos and other art forms. The museum complex includes several buildings, a garden designed by Itchuku himself, and offers stunning views of Mount Fuji.
The Kubota Itchiku Art Museum is an absolute gem and a must-see if you’re in the Lake Kawaguchiko area. While the admission price is a bit higher than most museums, it’s well worth it for the experience you’ll have here. The main attraction is the breathtaking collection of kimonos by artist Itchiku Kubota, who revived and reimagined the ancient tsujigahana dyeing technique. The level of artistry in each piece is astonishing—the colors, textures, and designs seem to leap from the fabric with depth and emotion. His “Symphony of Light” kimono series, inspired by nature and the changing seasons, is particularly awe-inspiring and something you won’t soon forget. Equally impressive are the museum’s surroundings. The building itself blends traditional Japanese aesthetics with natural materials, and the gardens are simply spectacular. You’ll find peaceful walking paths, waterfalls, and even a hidden cave tucked into the hillside, adding to the sense of wonder. The setting enhances the spiritual and artistic impact of the exhibits, making the entire visit feel immersive and reflective. Photography inside is not permitted, which only adds to the sacred, almost reverent atmosphere of the gallery spaces. If you’re interested in art, textiles, Japanese culture, or simply want to be inspired, the Kubota Itchiku Art Museum offers a truly unique and moving experience. Highly recommended.

Beautiful kimonos and interesting architecture. Great view of mt Fuji from their cafe. Takes about an hour to look around. The museum is quite small but very tranquil so you can sit relax and take in the view.

A very nice art museum of the artist and kimono designer Kubota Itchiku. The art works extend to the buildings and surrounding ground. The Kimono exhibition is the main part of the museum but be sure the walk the outside path for tranquility
Itai S — Google review
The museum is dedicated to the work of Itchiku Kubota, the artist who revived the lost tsujigahana dyeing technique and elevated it to the level of fine art. The current exhibition, “With the Sunset in Siberia,” features 26 kimono inspired by nature and the passage of time. Among them, “Burning Sun” (1986) stands out as one of Kubota’s most personal works, created in memory of his time as a war prisoner in Siberia — a piece that symbolizes endurance and hope in the face of hardship. The exhibition is displayed in a single, spacious hall housed within a pyramid-shaped building. A small garden with moss, stones, and a water feature surrounds the structure, and a tearoom adjacent to it serves matcha and traditional Japanese sweets. A quiet, reflective place — ideal for slowing down and appreciating the harmony of color, light, and emotion.

Such a beautiful hidden gem. We came here on Golden Week and there were people but not giant crowds like in other places. They have a cafe a little pricy for small portions, but i guess you’re really paying for the nice view and ambience. Nice place to walk around and relax away from all the crowds.
Mika Y — Google review
This was a incredible experience! The building and gardens were amazing to explore and the exhibit was beautiful. Highly recommend visiting if you are in the area. Photography is not allowed inside the exhibit area, but is permitted in the gardens. Also it is closed on Tuesdays so just keep that in mind when planning your visit.
Brian C — Google review
Sorry, but I think it’s a waste of money to come here since it’s a bit pricy for what I get. (unless you like kimonos🙂) They have more souvenirs shops than art pieces. And you can’t take photos when see the arts and kimonos. They also have 2 sort of cafe inside. The backyard wasn’t special to me, Because it was spring? 🤔 I see similar yard in many shrine and it’s free. (I still give offering tho 🙏🏻)

Shinobi No Sato Ninja Village is a thrilling ninja-themed park located in Oshino Village, Yamanashi Prefecture. The village offers an array of interactive attractions such as the Karakuri House filled with ninja tricks, Ninjutsu Kaiden no Michi athletic experience, and a throwing star practice range. Visitors can also witness captivating ninja shows featuring authentic implements.
We stopped at Oshino Ninja Village for lunch on our way to Mount Fuji, and it was a fantastic experience. The village offers an immersive glimpse into the world of ninjas, featuring traditional Japanese gardens, exciting ninja shows, and engaging hands-on activities. If the sky is clear, you can also enjoy a breathtaking view of Mount Fuji. A must-visit spot if you're in the area!

Great place to explore your inner ninja! Good show, good place to chill and visit and learn something about the way of the ninja. As for the food, unfortunately, there is no halal food option or a very limited seafood option. But overall experience was good and recommended for "Must Visit".

We had such an amazing lunch at Shinibi No Sato. The food was great and the atmosphere even better! The garden is beautiful with fantastic viewss of Mount Fuji. The staff and ninjas are wonderful and so entertaining. Highly recommend a visit here.

The Ninja Village is nice especially for kids and the staff was brilliant (I saw some families with children and they were having a blast). We were here for lunch as part of an excursion and the food was good, with vegetables available (so, healthy choices possible!). I only think there should be more food for these excursions as there simply wasn’t enough for everyone. Beautiful scenery and views of Mount Fuji!

Fun outing with the kids. When i came here pre Covid, there’s seafood set lunch. Now these’s none, so as muslim we have very very limited choice of food here (not recommended). There’s also an entrance fee of JPY1,800 per adult to enter this place (i deducted a star due to this). The place is clean and beautiful, with a garden overlooking mt fuji. Love that the place is not crowded even during golden week. All the ninjas (staff) were friendly and accomodative when you ask for pictures/ they even volunteer to take your picture.

Such a tourist trap. We stopped here for lunch during a Mount Fuji day trip. The buffet service was poor, with limited options and quantities. By the time I reached the buffet table, even the rice was almost gone. Despite there being two buffet tables, each group was only allowed to use one, which was badly organised. I wouldn’t recommend this place. Also, the toilets didn’t even have soap to wash your hands. The restaurant view was beautiful though.

Absolutely lovely place. Amazing food and atmosphere, even got to see a ninja. Make sure to walk the garden as well

Ate as part of a bus tour. It was buffet style. The food was mediocre and mostly cold (room temp). The "ninja village" aspect was pretty mediocre too. It looked like there was supposed to be some sort of activities or something in the garden area, but all looked disused and we're empty when we visited.

Embark on an unforgettable adventure with the Yamanakako no Kaba Amphibious Bus, where you can explore the stunning Lake Yamanaka and enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Fuji. This unique tour offers a delightful experience as you glide across both land and water, making it perfect for families looking to create lasting memories together.
🚌💦 Yamanakako KABA – A Must-Try Amphibious Adventure! 🗻🛶 This was one of those experiences that totally exceeded expectations! From land to lake, the ride was not just scenic — it was fun, thoughtful, and unique. 🎤 The Japanese guide was a total gem! Even though the tour was in Japanese, she held up a translation chart in English and Chinese as she explained — super considerate and engaging. You could feel the effort to include everyone, and it really made the experience more enjoyable. 🌄 And oh, the view of Mt. Fuji from the lake? Absolutely breathtaking. It feels surreal seeing it from the water — calm, majestic, and postcard-perfect. 🛑 One tip: the steps into the vehicle are a bit steep, so just take your time. It’s totally safe, even for young kids or seniors — just don’t rush. ✅ Overall? HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Whether you're a nature lover, traveling with family, or just looking for something cool and different — Yamanakako KABA is a must-go!

Place is nice n clean.. There is a souvenir shop on ground floor.. The ticket counter is 2nd floor.. Place gets filled up quickly as well... U get to see the view of Mt Fuji but unfortunately for us, it was very cloudy and we did not get to see... Was a good experience though...
Eddie P — Google review
Reflecting on our trip to Japan and this was one of the unexpected moments that sticks in my mind. The tour is mercifully short so you’re not stuck on a bus for hours on end, instead it’s brief and straight to the point which is perfect for a packed schedule. In fairness though the experience was absolutely made by our tour guide who had a great sense of humour and whilst giving the guided tour in Japanese held up translated laminates so we were engaged too. The fun bit though was that we had read through the slide quickly whilst she was explaining in Japanese and reacting to the jokes, the moments of eye contact as she tried not to laugh as we did were brilliant and for that alone it was worth going. The bus station was immaculately clean, and the bus itself was comfortable and never felt unsafe even as we barrelled into the beautiful lake. Fuji-san hid from us behind clouds but the trip was no less enjoyable.
Andy L — Google review
The Kaba Bus at Yamanakako is so different from what I have ridden in the United States and other countries. I have tried similar buses in many places. It is not as fun as this one in Japan. They make it a complete experience, starting with the video at the beginning and including more fun activities to do while we are on the bus. This is the best water bus experience I have had.
Michael W — Google review
We could enjoy a beautiful scenery with Mt. Fuji. From the beginning of the tour until end , there was only Japanese explanation. There were only 2-3 Japanese customers ( included me ) . I hope they provide the video with English subtitles and multilingual ear phone guide like precious time.

My trip here was a matter of luck. The website stated that if there were seats available on the KABA Hippo Bus, you could board it that day. When I arrived, the screen still said "reservation is in progress," with seven seats still available. According to the website, I could purchase tickets and board when seats became available. I thought, "I'll have some fun and seek for luck." I approached the staff with a calm and hopeful attitude, but unfortunately, their attitude was inappropriate, rude, and discriminatory. They refused to sell me a ticket because I was a foreigner! Not only did the staff fail to provide accurate information responsibly, but a local tour guide also took eight tickets for the group without any verification or even handing in any name. This was a completely unfair and discriminatory attitude. The staff are also very impatient explained that it was group ticketing time, not individual ticketing time! First, let's understand that if the screen hadn't indicated seats were available, I wouldn't have inquired. How could I have had such an unpleasant experience? Furthermore, if there truly were no seats available, I understand, but I'm also being treated rudely and disrespectfully. This kind of treatment from someone I've never met is truly disgusting. I came to Japan to enjoy tourism and local culture, and I have the impression that Japanese people are courteous and hospitable. Please don't think the "KABA Hippo Bus" is worth the money simply because it's an amphibious vehicle! However, this experience has led me to strongly discourage visiting this area, specifically because the window attendants were incredibly unfriendly. Before leaving this review, I read other reviews, and they all mentioned similar disrespectful treatment from window attendants and even bus staff. It's consistent with foreigners being treated disrespectfully, and this has been happening for a while now. I hope travelers will reconsider and that the company will be aware of such poor staff practices.

Fujiyama Kitchen フジヤマキッチン offers an international menu with seasonal dishes and a selection of wines. The restaurant provides a picturesque setting with a terrace offering views of Mt. Fuji. Guests have enjoyed various sets such as mushroom and ham pasta, pesto and veggie pasta, seafood tomato cream, and beef curry. The meals are described as solid, homemade-tasting, and coupled with excellent service.
We had Set A (mushroom and ham pasta) and Set D (pesto and veggie pasta), and they were both solid. Set A felt more like it came from a restaurant, the miso, garlic sauce was perfect, the ratio of meat, mushrooms and pasta was also perfect. The pesto pasta tasted homemade, which isn't bad at all. The iced tea and salad was also excellent. We didn't stay at this hotel, but the entire complex seemed really fun and was a nice respite in the middle of the day.

Turnips are especially sweet and delicious when cooked well. The sauce is disappointing. Do you want more fresh cream? The garlic was too noticeable, and although the flavor of the ingredients may be alive, it gave a weak impression as a bagna cauda. [Carbonara with Oshino eggs from Yamagata Prefecture] 1580 yen The fresh cream is rich and delicious. The pasta is al dente, and the carbonara has a barley aroma. There's also plenty of bacon in it. [Shingendori original spice curry rice] 1400 yen A curry with a strong hint of ginger. It also has cloves, nutmeg, and other spices. At first, I thought it smelled like cinnamon. The Shingen chicken was nice and tender, but the curry flavor was so strong that it was hard to tell. I don't care, but glass vessels are cool. [Koshu wine beef 100% Italian hamburger] 1980 yen It feels like the nutmeg has a strong effect. I feel a strange richness, but I don't know what it is. Do you add blue cheese as a secret ingredient? It's delicious, but I'm not impressed. I get the impression that the flavor of the meat itself is not brought out. The tomato sauce has a fresh taste, as if it was made from tomatoes, and the vegetables, such as slightly cooked turnips and red turnips that are almost raw, have a strong flavor and are cooked perfectly. [Koshu Wine Beef Flamp Steak] 3,180 yen The meat itself is delicious. Wine sauce is normal. There are no surprises. Great coffee shop with relaxed French style and decor. Very relaxed antique atmosphere. Great choice of cakes and drinks. Don’t miss it !! Look out for the old American car at the front and the Harley Davidson motorcycles.

This place has been such a highlight so far into my trip that I had to review it the same day I went here. Had the Iced Latte (Irish Cream) & Iced Latte (White Chocolate & Strawberry) TWICE in under 6 hours. I loved it that much. Had the rasberry cheese cake which was equally good. Everything about this place is top tier - the staff, the environment, the music. Just amazing!

There are varieties of cakes to choose and look delicious. We order 3 types of cakes and drip cofffee. The banana custard pie, chocolate pie was great. Their drip coffee also not bad. The place was cosy.

The best part about this cafe is definitely the atmosphere. Jazz music playing with cozy interior decorations. The strawberry was fresh, and the cake itself wasn’t too sweet, which was good.

You get a very warm feeling being in this cafe. The strawberry white chocolate iced latte was my favourite, I wish they opened earlier to have it the 3rd time before leaving 😇

Awesome cafe! Cookie Cream Cheesecake was the best cheesecake ever;) It was soft but not too soft and had very creamy rich flavor yet not too heavy. Coffee was also good and they have a variety of coffee and tea. Plus, they have cute accessories, clothes, kitchen items...etc. The only thing that I want to ask them is the coffee cup. They use paper cups only even for there, not taking away. Since they sell cute coffee cups, I'd love to have coffee with them!
Ikuko W — Google review
This cafe is extremely cute. Unfortunately it doesn't have a view of Fuji due to another mountain being in the way. I had a hot latte and the cookies & cream cheesecake. The presentation of the cheesecake could've been a bit better, but the taste was excellent; very creamy & delicious, beyond what I had expected. Coffee was decent quality too.

Soba noodle shop
麺処びわ is a charming spot in Oshino, perfect for travelers seeking an authentic dining experience away from the touristy areas. The restaurant offers delicious and genuine soba noodles, providing an atmosphere that reflects the traditional Japanese culture. Visitors can enjoy hot noodles with green onions and flavorful tea while appreciating the feudalistic ambiance. The handmade udon and tasty soup add to the delightful dining experience, making it a great choice for families as well.
Authentic, delicious and very affordable. Noodles are absolutely delicious. A true haven a stone's throw away from the tourist traps lining the streets of the village sights.

The food was excellent—fresh and flavorful. However, the service felt rushed due to a surge of customers, which made the experience a bit hectic. I'd still recommend it for the quality of the food and hope for a calmer visit next time! Also, make sure to have cash available as it’s the only accepted mode of payment.

Authentic atmosphere with authentic noodle cuisine. I chose the hot noodles with green onions and enjoyed every bite. The tea was tasty as well. Clean restrooms. English menus are available per request.

A traditional seating restaurant which serves both cold and hot udon and soba. The tempura udon was particularly nice :) Since they only accept cash, we had to retrieve our money from the car, and they were very kind to let us wait. They even served another cup of tea whilst we were waiting. Since its a short walk from the ponds, definitely a good lunch spot!

If you visit Oshino as part of your Mt Fuji tour and stop here to have lunch in the city, this is a great place to eat authentic and delicious soba noodles. We choose to go off the tourist beaten track as nothing in the tourist area looked nice. The food was extremely commercialised and made for tourists, which, of course, may not taste anything Japanese. So, if you’re a traveller who likes exploring more authentic places to eat, this is a place I cannot recommend enough. We were the only two foreigners in the restaurant. The food was amazing! For everything in the picture for two people we paid $20-$25. IG: feimao_my

Amazing food and service. The chef and a young woman staff spoke a bit English so they introduced the dishes for us. Restaurant also helped us call taxi afterwards.

A gem in the area. I asked my hotel reception to call to book (phone bookings only). Successfully booked on the night. Also made an order through the phone call for the menu we will have. We arrived at the restaurant and the staff are very welcoming and friendly. They showed us into a private room with heater. However, after we finished the entrees, we realised we ordered the wrong dish through the phone. Even though this was our mistake, the staff very helpfully agreed to change to what we wanted. We really appreciate how they changed it for us even though it was our mistake. The staff are not as fluent in English, but they make an effort and they are very friendly. Exceptional service.

(Translated by Google) I went on a trip to see Mt. Fuji. This is the dinner I was looking forward to, as it was full before and I couldn't make a reservation. The atmosphere in the private room is very relaxing. It seems that most of the products are locally produced for local consumption, and just seeing it written on the menu makes me more excited🎵 For my meal, I chose Kaiseki. Each piece is carefully seasoned, and you can clearly feel the amount of time and effort put into preparing it. One of the final dishes was shabu-shabu meat. This is also delicious! There are a lot of Japanese pepper leaves on top, and when you wrap it in meat and eat it, it leaves a very long impression. Next time I thought I'd try shabu-shabu kaiseki. It was very delicious. Thank you for the meal. *If you want to drink alcohol, you can call a substitute, but it will cost around 5,000 yen, so I think it's better to find a nearby accommodation if possible. I have to admit, it’s a very local taste and appreciation… the horse meat sashimi was really tasty… the soup in the pot had a unique taste but overall decent to Savour… The seats were the one that I was very uncomfortable with because my leg cramped 4 times throughout the meal… Will definitely come back again… 👍🏻👍🏻

Buta niku hoto 豚肉ほうとうwas good. Serving is big, with plenty of carbs in it, pumpkin, potato, yam… lunch was a lot more crowded but dinner was more manageable. Managed to get a seat without much waiting. Worth your time if you’re in the area 👍

Delicious traditional thick noodle houtou. The soup is very flavourful and comes with a lot of ingredients. We went for the pork version as well as the chicken, seafood and veggie option. Both were very delicious. Additionally we also ordered the mixed tempura. Wait time is around an hour to get a table. We went on a Saturday at 5.45pm. By around 7.15pm the chef put a sign at the front and the registration counter to indicate that they were not accepting any more customers presumably as they utilised their food inventory allocation for the day so come early to ensure that you are able to dine here.

They take names and pax writing to queue at entrance . Queue was super fast I waited 15mins before I get in. The restaurant is like a big canteen hall inside . Staffs are mostly elderly Japanese so they do not speak English . Service is slightly slow , I tried to raise my hand to get alert to put order but it seems not a proper way to do in Japan . 🥴 Food is ok . We were starving as this is our first meal in Mount Fuji area . I ordered the mix tempura which is 1 fish & 1 prawn . U can see how HUGE is the fish and prawn. They offer free parking behind and infront of the restaurant . When queueing outside there’s some bench and u can directly see mt. Fuji in front of u . U can take a walk at the black sand area behind the restaurant after u eat

Bodies of Water
Lake Yamanaka, the largest of the five lakes located east of Mount Fuji, offers a picturesque setting for lakeside walks, bike rides, and various water activities. With its rich natural surroundings, it attracts tourists throughout the year to witness cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant autumn foliage, and snowy landscapes in winter. The area features numerous facilities including accommodations like inns and hotels, souvenir shops, camping grounds, a flower park, and excursion cruises.
This is a bit out of the way from other four lakes and quite a challenge bicycle ride from Gawaguchiko station, but it’s quite worth it. The bike path along the lake side is well maintained and less car traffic. There are many restaurants and cafes to take a break. Swans are very beautiful and they can be easily spotted.

Lake Yamanaka is a calm and scenic spot that’s perfect for a relaxing visit. The area is peaceful, with well-kept walking and cycling paths around the lake, and it offers a variety of outdoor activities like boating, fishing, and picnicking. If you’re lucky and the weather is clear, the view of Mount Fuji from the lake is absolutely breathtaking. But keep in mind—it’s often cloudy, and Fuji can be completely hidden. Early mornings tend to give you the best chance of a clear view. Even without seeing Fuji, the lake and surrounding nature are beautiful and worth the visit. A great place to unwind and enjoy a quieter side of the Fuji Five Lakes.

This is one of the deepest lakes that are surrounding mount fuji. We took the boat ride to the middle of the lake to view mount fuji behind us, unfortunately it is really difficult to see a perfect mount fuji during summer. There are a lot of clouds. This lake has very limited tourist. We also bought the 100 yen food to feed the swan and the koi in the lake. The kids love it.

Great place to visit. Plenty of nice views around the lake, with views of Mount Fuji. I recommend getting a bicycle at one of the shops along the lake and cycle around. One round will take you about 1 hour plus, and you can stop by along the way for nice coffees. Comparatively, I think here has less attractions but it is definitely quieter compared to more popular lakes which are more accessible.

Another gem and a good spot to take photos of Mount Fuji. Less crowd since it is quite far from the usual tourist attraction. Came on a cold Saturday around 12. There was a wait of almost an hour with more than 10 groups ahead of us. I searched for cafes around Yamanakako but I wasn't planning to come here. However, we came because the bike rental owner? At sansui recommended the apple pies here. As he said it was so popular and he was right. When it was our turn to order, it was sold out. I hope they can make more of the apple pie especially on busy days because it is popular. Had the apricot cheese cake and the pear almond pie instead, which are not bad at all. The coffee was great though I wasn't expecting the latte to be served in a "bowl" not a cup. Their blend coffee is unexpectedly good. On cold days like today, i recommend to sit indoors because only 2 tables outside have heaters. They also have a small boutique with random items to check out while waiting. Lots of car parking space. And bikes can be parked near the entrance. Kids under the age of 10 are not allowed in the store :)

Atmospheric cafe with delicious deserts. They have nice outdoor terrace with Lake Yamanaka view. The parking is free of charge with plenty of space. They don’t allow kids under 10 which is great and ensures visitors can spend their time in relaxed and quiet settings.
Paul — Google review
They allow dogs that bark loudly on the terrace, but children under 10 years old aren’t welcomed in the shop. I suppose that’s the privilege of being a well-known spot in a popular holiday resort area — you can afford to be exclusive, and people will still come in droves. I was recommended this place on social media as a must-visit for cakes at Yamanakako. The cake itself was fairly average, but the waitress who served us came across as rather passive-aggressive. Instead of making us feel welcomed, it felt more like she was showing us how not to enjoy our time there. The unspoken message seemed to be: have your cake, pay up, and get out as quickly as possible so the next group of customers can come in and hand over their money. Very disappointing. If anyone asks me for recommendations in the future, I’ll have to tell them not to visit here at all, given the concept of this store. That said, I genuinely wish the shop the best with its current business strategy.

Sunday: I walked over with my 5 year old and saw the No Kids under 10 sign. I sent her back to our cottage and waited in line to ask for takeaway pie. “No takeaway today, so sorry.” Monday: Husband and I decide to alternate taking turns getting pie alone and minding children. I wait in line and ask if they have takeaway today. Not today. I ask what day they would have takeaway. Some internal discussion and the answer, “Tomorrow will have takeaway.” Husband suggests I order 4 slices of pie and claim I can’t finish and ask for a box. I order 1 slice to eat there and propose to bring back some of its packable. Pie is not packable, all drowned in melted ice cream. Tuesday: Our last day in the area, I invent an excuse to keep us in the area until Papermoon opens at 11am. I wait in line and confirm takeaway is possible today. My turn comes, I am asked for my order. Apple pie? “No Apple pie takeaway.” They do give me 4 slices of the dark cherry pie though. My kids enjoyed them! But if I’d known, I would have tried the Apple pie when I came by myself on Monday. Pie was very delicious though!! Glad I got to have 2 slices.

Giving a one star review because zero isn’t an option. This place clearly does not welcome families with children. It’s incredibly disappointing in this day and age to encounter such open discrimination against parents and children. Families deserve to enjoy a cake or outing without being treated like a nuisance. Strongly advise anyone with kids to take your business elsewhere — there are plenty of places that actually value and respect all customers.

Super delicious traditional Japanese hoto noodles and soba. In a right weather, you can see Fuji-san in the background. Friendly staff and great traditional tatami dining area. Great to take same rest and cool off while enjoying traditional Japanese lunch, very recommended 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

Traditional Japanese Restaurant serving the local meals. The Hoto, a soup with pumpkin and meat, which was delicious (we added hand made noodles) we also tried some Horse meat which is a regional delicacy. Servers were lovely and we managed to get there early just after opening so got to sit in the in ground seat not on the floor cushion. But either way wouldn’t matter for this absolutely delightful traditional experience!

A lakeside restaurant with ample parking. The hoto with pork belly is delicious and plentiful. Self-serve hot tea is available. I sat at a table near the fireplace on a cold day, which was a bit warm. ❤️✨

We loved the food and the servers here. Such timely and kind people, a little Japanese goes a long way when you make an effort in a small town like this, even with lots of tourists. The hoto dishes are so comforting after a cold or rainy day and lots of choices to add extras. Self-service tea was a real nice plus.

I did enjoy the curry hoto noodles very much. I am a Westerner so not an expert, but I preferred the ramen noodles and the yakisoba that I've had on this trip to these thicker noodles. I thought the appetizers were very small, while hoto noodles bowl was very large. The prices were a little higher here than the other restaurants I visited. The staff were very polite I understand that my perspective is Western, but I do not like sitting on the floor. It is uncomfortable on my knees. Perhaps I need to do some yoga? I also was a little embarrassed to take my shoes off as I had just been hiking a lot and I felt that my socks were smelly. I really appreciated that there was a menu in English as well as in Japanese.

We loved our meal at shoya in yamanakako! the hoto was super tasty and the portion absolutely massive. we got a side of fried fish and pickles, plus a big beer each — all for about ¥2,520 each which felt like a steal. there’s free self-serve green tea and water too. friendly staff, cosy vibe, great value — would definitely come back!
Lisa C — Google review
Delicious hoto with all kinds of toppings. The portion size is huge so probably two people can share one and get a few appetizers that also looked delicious.
Johannes S — Google review
The Yamanashi pumpkin in the hōtō-style noodle soup was creamy, soft, and absolutely delicious 🎃 I went for the standard veggie hōtō, richly packed with vegetables, better paired with Yamanashi’s special spicy sauce~ Lots of seating, and shoes off before entering. They don’t accept touch payment, but the kind staff let me leave my iPhone as a down payment and go back to my hostel to get cash. Such a generous and trusting gesture… truly an amazing experience 🙏 #山中湖 #HotoNoodles #YamanashiEats #LocalFlavors #PumpkinSeason #SpicySauceLove #JapaneseCuisine #Yamanakako #山梨グルメ

Day-use onsen
Day spa
Super public bath
Nestled near the serene Lake Yamanaka and the majestic Mt. Ishiwari, Yamanakako Hirano Onsen ISHIWARI-NO-YU is a charming traditional onsen that beautifully blends wood and stone architecture. This inviting hot spring facility boasts an outdoor tub crafted from hinoki cypress, offering visitors a unique bathing experience surrounded by nature. The onsen's water is known for its exceptional quality, featuring a high alkalinity with a pH of 10.
Get 10% off after you add them as friend in Line. They provide free shampoo and soap but you will need to bring your own towel. The hot spring is not big for both indoor and outdoor. Note their operating hour to avoid dissapointment.

Cheap if you have your own towels. 3 Small baths, very crowded, outside bath wasn't that warm in my visit. 100 yen lockers are refunded. Restaurant was more like a cafeteria and didn't look appetizing. Plenty of parking. Lots of tourists.
SAinJP — Google review
Not a great experience. Came with my partner in the evening. Not busy there. I purchased an Onsen ticket. My partner wasn't allowed because of tattoos which was expected and okay for us. It was getting dark and cold outside and we asked if he can sit inside to wait for me. Lady showed us a sum on her calculator saying 750 yen. We were quite confused and she stated that he has to pay a fee for being in the building. I asked to show me the sign saying so. There was a sign in Japanese in the entrance, however it didn't state any fee to pay. 750 yen to just SIT inside the building while waiting for me seemed like a joke as the bathing fee is 900 yen. Seemed like some kind of harassment to get my partner out of the building. We asked if he can eat in the restaurant at least but not even that was allowed only with an additional 750 yen. Never experienced something like this in Japan. Onsen itself only ok. Low quality shower products, lack of cleanliness (hair everywhere) and hair dryer only with extra payment. And after the visit I felt like getting a bladder infection, so not sure about the hygiene level of the water.
F. F — Google review
A traditional onsen that seems to be oftened by locals in the area. They have big baths and changing rooms, but not quite spacious enough to accommodate so many people. The saune could only have 3 people inside. Their outdoor baths were very nice and quite hot. Food were fairly priced and tasted fine. There are a lot of stuff being sold in the facility and the lounge space was definitely relaxing, though the space is limited. It’s not a big facility, just worth its price. 😊
Ann S — Google review
Nice onsen near Yamanakako. Several types of baths, both indoor and outdoor. The building also hosts a small market with local vegetables, a small restaurant (ramen, etc.) and several tatami rooms just to relax between the baths. The place is clean and well organized, with a nice garden in the middle. You can rent a towel on site, no need to bring anything.
Stéfan - — Google review
Nice Onsen up the mountain. It has a busstop with not so frequent busses. Two outside baths which were nice and quiet.
Bartu N — Google review
Visited the onsen a couple of days ago and really enjoyed it! 1.) It is separated in gender, so if you visit as a couple set a time, when you meet again, there is a clock inside. 2.) We had backpacks which were no problem, there are lockers inside. 3.) We don't speak Japanese but were welcomed warmly and everyone was really friendly and helpful!! 4.) There are 5 "pools" and I recommend watching some videos "how to Onsen", copy the people around you and just relax. Thank you for the friendlyness

Lookouts
Yamanakako Panorama-dai is a must-visit lookout point offering breathtaking panoramic views of Mount Fuji and Lake Yamanakako from an elevation of 1,090 meters. The spot is particularly remarkable at sunrise and sunset throughout the year. Visitors can also enjoy the sight of lone Japanese maples (momiji) near the trailhead parking lot, which provides access to a hike up Mt. Myojin in Yamanashi Prefecture.
Panorama-dai has free but limited parking, and there's even a toilet nearby, super convenient. The view from up there is really nice. You can see Lake Yamanaka, all the little houses below, and on a clear day, Mt Fuji in the background. When I went it was cloudy, so I didn’t see much of Fuji, but the view was still worth it. The whole place looks like a miniature model from above, pretty cool. Just a heads-up though: there are wild blueberries or some kind of berries on the ground, and if you’re not careful, they’ll stain your car’s white carpet or your clothes, especially if your kid walks over them and you carry them after. Happened to me lol.
Melvin J — Google review
The view is quite nice but if you’re going for sunset it’s not a spot for winter since the sun sets behind mountains and it won’t look pretty unless the clouds turn red. This is definitely an autumn and spring location. The parking is also very limited and technically you cannot park on the side of the road which people still do so drive slow and avoid peek times. I think it looked nice during the day as well so go then if you don’t want to do U turns back to back finding a spot to park.
Kohki Y — Google review
The viewing spot is about a 45-minute drive from the Kawaguchiko area. Unfortunately, we visited on a cloudy day on 22 August, so the famous view was hidden. The location is only accessible by car, and parking is quite limited, though we were lucky to find a spot upon arrival. Basic facilities such as toilets are available, which makes the visit more convenient.
Leslie L — Google review
When the weather is clear, it’s an amazing view deck and a good half-way rest place along the mountain road with modern design. The only issue is the parking area is too limited compare to the among of visitors to this place.
Michael J — Google review
Limited parking spots. I recommend driving past this panoramic point until you reach a point where you can park on the side of the road. Better views, no people.
Tazin K — Google review
This spot is a must-visit if you're driving. Visited this observation spot on 28-Mar-2024 and was disappointed cause we can't see anything due to poor weather. We were lucky to revisit this place again on the next day when the weather turned good. The view was magnificent but the annoying part was the crowd of tourists (we included 😂). Also remember to hike up the small hill for better view (see video) There's no facilities nearby besides a toilet.
Cassey K — Google review
Beautiful little stop on the hill-side, to stop and stretch your legs. Great panoramic views, sadly a bit cloudy. Plenty of beautiful my clean bathrooms and garbage cans (so hard to find in Japan) but parking spaces can easily be filled up. Strangely, way more view spots and seating than available parking spaces… and it’s only accessible by car/ motorcycle. Increase parking spaces, please!
Tak O — Google review
Only a few parking lots but definitely worth to visit. Superb scenery during sunset with mountain Fuji.

Shrine
Sacred & Religious Sites
Nestled amidst lush greenery, Yamanaka Suwa Shrine is a tranquil Shinto sanctuary that holds deep cultural significance and is particularly revered for its associations with fertility and family blessings. Dedicated to the deity Toyotamahime no Mikoto, this shrine—also known as Yamanaka Myojin—is a popular destination for women seeking support in marriage, childbirth, and child-rearing. Visitors can immerse themselves in the beauty of nature while enjoying stunning views of Mount Fuji and Swan Lake.
It's a beautiful shrine surrounded by plenty of trees and its two sections are connected over a bridge spanning the main road. Someone collected the fallen leaves into a heart and there's a post on to put your phone on top to take a good picture of yourself infront of the main building. You can really feel the care that is put into this shrine.
Tobias L — Google review
A nice hidden shrine on the way to Yamanakako. The walk bridge over the main road caught my attention. Quite a nice surprise.

It was beautiful during autumn. Located near the Yamanaka lake. A very good view featuring momiji and ginkgo leaves. The leaves also scattered around below, makes it a good spot for taking dramatic picture.

There are many sights around lake Yamanakako. This is one of them. There is another building to the left after you cross a bridge. There are mobile shrines inside which are used for a festival in September. At this shrine one prays for good childbirth.

Beautiful, peaceful, and easily accessible. What a wonderful place to go sit down and breathe in nature. A quick walk from lake Yamanaka and a must see. There are also little paths through the forests around the shrines if you'd like to have a little forest wander. Remember to respect Japanese customs and clean up after yourself. Enjoy the walk!
Theo S — Google review
The Yamanaka Sengen Shrine and Suwa Shrines are two intertwined shrines - one first established in 104, the other first built in 931. The Suwa Shrine was built to honour the god of agriculture - and to quiet a spreading epidemic. When bits were added in the 1500s and 1600s, the goddess of mothers and children was said to help make childbirth easier and safer if sacred waters were used The nearby Sengen Shrine was built to honour three gods in 931 - and was updated in the Edo era but destroyed by fire just after World War 1, so it was rebuilt in the 1920s and refurbished 50 years ago. To be honest, I have no idea of the difference between Suwa and Sengen ... and the brochures I picked up don't seem to help. Perhaps it's two variants of Shinto like Sunni/Shia, or Catholic/Protestants, or Pureland/Zen. Or perhaps I am completely wrong! The monk who was operating the info stand / Gift shop was friendly and seemed to want to be informative - but I had no Japanese, and his English was quite basic. It didn't matter - the shrines were peaceful and calming, and the architecture and statuary was quite charming. Certainly well worth an hour or two.

Udon noodle restaurant
Restaurant
Watanabe Udon offers an authentic local dining experience where the staff speaks only Japanese and the menu is exclusively in Japanese as well. The service is friendly and accommodating, and guests are required to remove their shoes before being seated on the tatami platform. The restaurant can get crowded during peak hours, but it's worth it for their delicious homemade udon dishes like the classic egg and beef udon.
If you are looking to immense yourself in a local dining experience, this is it. Everyone speaks only in Japanese and the menu is only written in Japanese. The service is very friendly and patient so don’t worry about that. You have to remove your shoes before stepping up the tatami platform. We dropped our stuff at the table and then proceeded to order at the counter. They will serve the food at your table and you can pay at the counter after your meal. Self-service water dispenser is also available next to the counter. The homemade udon was thicker than usual and had a great bite to it. Simple, satisfying bowl of udon in an old-school local eatery setting. The beef was super yummy.

丸天 is a cozy and authentic Japanese restaurant known for its delicious udon and soba dishes. The traditional Hoto dish, a standout on the menu, features a flavorful soup with seasonal vegetables, slices of pork meat, and noodles stewed to perfection. Customers appreciate the time taken to prepare this dish as it results in an exceptional flavor. The restaurant also offers other delectable options such as salted river trout, tempura, and duck soba.
Waited about 30mins, it's a small restaurant. The food is AMAZINNGGGGG!!! Probably the best meal we had on this trip. The soba is the best I've ever had. Great tempura!!! Huge portion. We had the soba tempura set with sashimi for about ¥1990. Mostly locals eating here.
ValerieHazLife — Google review
I ordered tempura soba and salted grilled fish. They taste amazing! Staffs are very polite and lovely. They don’t speak english but they tried their best to communicate. I saw many reviews about poor service and I don’t agree at all! The signs (in English) clearly say that you should be waiting in line at the right door. (So you shouldn’t just randomly walk inside) There are 2 sections of tables, left room with only 5 tables (with chairs), for this section you have mt Fuji view. And the right room, you’ll be sitting on the mat, looks kind of cute but I chose mt Fuji side.
Janati K — Google review
Delicious food with nice atmosphere. It’s at the end of walking path, so it’s nice to enjoy after a walk.
Thang V — Google review
The food was fresh and delicious. The environment was warm and comforting, we were seated at the tatami mat near to the glassed view of pond/carp and my kid was thrilled. My kid of 2 year is very fussy eater and never liked fish, but this was the first time she was agreeable and enjoyed eating the trout, to my surprise. It was quite a wait to queue in the cold. However, it was very reasonably priced, and it was a lovely meal.
Petrina S — Google review
A nice cozy, make you feel at home restaurant that serves delicious udon and soba. The soba is of the traditional variety, but the udon is more of a flat, thicker noodle. The salted river trout was outstanding and I highly recommend it. Great staff and reasonable prices.

Cosy authentic Japanese restaurant with great soba and udon. We ordered 3 sets of soba and udon. Tried one of the local speciality hotou with lot of vegetables and meats. Great! I liked their soba - Chewy and tasty. Portion is huge. Good place for food however Ambience is average. No English menu...however you can refer to the photos for the menu.
Eddie L — Google review
Hoto (ほうとう, 餺飥), a dish that really amazed me. The staff explained to me that this dish will take some time, which is an indicator that it's going to be real good. Well, good food takes time to cook, right? It's a soup dish with lots of types of seasonal vegetables and slices of pork meat, stewed so well that the soup is so flavourful. Noodles are added into the stew as well. You will agree with me that this beats any other soup in Japan after trying it! The portion is really huge and will definitely fill you up even if you're a big eater. A very satisfied meal. Maruten has other signature dishes as well like the common carp sashimi and grilled fish, but unfortunately I got so full and didn't have the chance to try them. They give discounts as well if you order them together with the hoto! The queue is long (about an hour during my visit) so be prepared for it.

Udon noodle restaurant
Soba noodle shop
Yoshida Udon is a must-visit spot in Yamanashi prefecture, known for its delicious and affordable local udon. The restaurant is only open for a short window from 11am to 2pm, offering a variety of udon dishes with options to customize the quantity and add ingredients like egg, cabbage, beef, tofu, and noodles. Guests can enhance their udon with flakes and spicy seasoning.
We came here after visiting Oshino Hakkai. Their yakiniku set is of a very good deal and delicious too. Eatery is like a residential setup, seemed like it is operated by family members, very courteous and hardworking people. We saw a lot of their locals and even the working people patronising this eatery. They open for lunch only.

Food is tasty (the soup is sweet and fresh). Beside noodles my friend ordered the rice which is also delicious. And once again, you will need to queue around 30 min 😆 Oh and large portion only 100yen more. I have included the menu in translation if u want take a look

Many good reviews so I got curious about it. However, the udon is simple (harder than usual, but that’s the local way), the soup came a bit too cold, the ambiance is a bit too cheap. Maybe I was expecting too much?

Noodle is too hard for me. Perhaps is more suitable for local. Didn't get the chance to try the yakiniku as it was sold out.

If you're nearby then you have to try this place. Their yakiniku set is delicious and it is commonly frequent by their locals.

(Translated by Google) I visited on a weekday in September 2025. I was able to get a seat around 11am without having to wait. The chef greeted me with a cheerful call. Most of the customers were people working in the area. It seemed like people in work clothes tended to order the yakiniku set meal, while people in dress shirts tended to order the udon. The yakiniku set meal was pork, rich and delicious. The yakiniku set meal comes with a bowl of udon, and if you order a large portion, the udon becomes full-sized. This does not mean that the yakiniku itself or the rice becomes a large portion. The udon here is delicious. It has a firm texture, but the udon noodles are sharp and slightly transparent, allowing you to taste the umami of the wheat. The soup is made with bonito stock, so it's not too salty.
