The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, located in Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture, is a world-renowned paleontology museum known for its extensive collection of dinosaur fossils and reconstructions. With over 40 complete dinosaur skeletons on display, visitors can gain a sense of the immense size of these prehistoric creatures.
Extremely popular museum—you can see license plates from all over Japan. If you like dinosaurs, this place is a must-visit. The kids were very excited to explore and learn. There’s plenty of interesting stuff to see. The buildings themselves are also worth seeing. The architecture looks like a spaceship landing on a small hill in the middle of rice fields. The infrastructure is well-prepared to handle large crowds: clean toilets, a brand-new restaurant, and a wide selection of merchandise. There’s plenty of free parking, so driving here is a great option.

Extremely well organized place. Beautiful arhitecture too. Child or adults everyone can enjoy this place. Better if you buy your ticket in advance. A lot of interesting things to see and fun activities to do. The gift shop is amazing too.
Fraga L — Google review
I can't believe it's only $10 to enter! This museum was so much fun and the dinosaurs were so cool! You don't need kids to have fun here. We drove from Fukui and there's a huge parking lot. We bought tickets in advance for timed entry and enjoyed a really good lunch (it was adorable!!)
Siobhan E — Google review
Great museum. Huge area with lots of displays and activities for the kids. The main gallery is an echo chamber which is awesome! Great food in the restaurant and cool playground outside too. Well recommended for kids, families, archaeology enthusiasts and dinosaur buffs! Big carpark, also lots of bus options
Jimmy M — Google review
Great museum. Impressive replicas mix with real fossils. Animaltronix looked nice too. The video works are a bit clumsy though. I really appreciate the faithful English translations on most of their displays. Though there was no translations available for the special exhibition. Also the special exhibition was surprisingly small, I'd suggest skipping it if you can't understand Japanese. The dioramas where the exhibition highlights the changes in the environment through the millions of years with the dinosaurs in them were informative. I went in hoping to gain some new knowledge and I left feeling fulfilled. The gift shop needs to have some imagination regarding the products they offered as I feel they were a bit lackluster.
Johnson ( — Google review
One of the most amazing Museum's I have ever been to. So many different different specimens of dinosaurs on display, even some information in English which makes it easier for tourists to understand. The the museum offers multiple levels and even an exclusive look on how some fossils are prepared. The restaurant offers a good selection of delicious dishes and the souvenir shop a wide variety of different things to buy. Would definitely visit again in the future.
Anthony O — Google review
An outstanding paleontological museum. The trip to the museum takes a long time, but it's worth it. It's best to buy tickets to the museum and the excavation site in advance, as it's very crowded. The bus from the station to the museum costs 300 yen. The museum has a restaurant, playgrounds, a dinosaur park, and a gift shop.
Google review
Without a doubt a world best dinosaur museum. Excellent range and depth, great animating techniques and great science detail. Real fossil excavation. Easy access from Fukui shinkansen ration. Tip top.

Echizen Ono Castle is a modern reconstruction of a 16th-century stone castle located in Ono, Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture. Built by Nagachika Kanamori, a vassal of Nobunaga Oda, the castle has a history dating back to its construction in 1576. The stonewalls and moat still exist today, and the castle tower was rebuilt in 1968 based on historical references.
Such a unique place in the middle of a young town of Ono. 360° views from the castle are stunning. We were too late for the tour but the castle building itself is quite impressive. It has a pond full of coy fish and the reflection of castle in the pond is beautiful. Recommend if you're nearby.

It was pretty much snowed in but I had to take a look regardless it was worth it, even through climbing those steps in 10 inch snow wasn’t easy!

Smallish reconstructed castle . Up a hill- which means a hike up 200+ steps . There is a fee to visit the interior . Looks pretty in its hilly setting
Eileen W — Google review
A cool rebuild of a castle It looks great from the outside and it's pretty center of oono so that's cool as it's ready to get there. The park around it was beautiful in autumn. As usual in Japan, the castle is rebuild. The inside is a museum but it's a bit of a shame that they did not try to redo the rings in the old style, too.
Siemon S — Google review
The castle in the Sky! Is. 400 years old magnificent castle surrounded by a beautiful town that looks like a little Kyoto, is charming place.
Nolberto P — Google review
Pretty small compared to the Himeji and Nagoya Castles. The interior of the building was mostly renovated and was not kept in its original state, the floorings were in vinyl while the stairs has the metal edges. No taking of photos are allowed once inside the building. Ono City is pretty clean though a bit sleepy. No food stalls or stores are open especially on Sundays. No 7-11's or Family Mart as well. The train from Fukui to Ono City by way of Kuzuryu (JR Train) has an interval of 3 hrs, be sure to bring some food supplies for the long wait.

After visiting the Ichijōdani Asakura Family Historic Ruins, we took the bus to Ōno-shi.After gettingt off at the Ōno bus stop, we walked toward the Ōno Castle. There were several cold springs along the road. We heard that the spring water of Ōno-shi is very famous in Japan, so we tasted some, oh! very cool and refreshing. Ōno Castle was located at Kameyama Hill, so we had to go climbing the hill to arrive at the castle. After a while, we finally arrived at Ōno Castle. There were many artifacts in the castle and visitors were not allowed to take pictures. When we went upstairs to the castle tower, we saw the beautiful scenery of the city. The Ōno-shi is far from the Fukui and the bus fee is expensive. So If you want to take the bus to the Ōno-shi, I suggest that you can buy the Holiday One-Day Pass from the Keifuku Bus counter in the Echizen Railway Fukui Station, then you can save much money.

The Ichijōdani Asakura Ruins is a historic site that offers a glimpse into the 15th-century castle town of the Asakura Clan. This well-preserved area includes residences, gardens, and remnants of the magnificent castle town that was ruled by the warlords of the Asakura Clan for over a century. Designated as a national historic site, it is one of Japan's largest town ruins dating back to the early 15th century.
I really love this place. It's incredibly beautiful and it feels so good here. There are awesome festivals, check their web site to know more. I'm happy to see the festival with lanterns this year. Earlier I came to watch fireflies. There is also a beautiful exhibition every summer. Local people are so kind and friendly. I come every season here
Kitty — Google review
Not really much there so unless you are REALLY into Sengoku period history it's probably not all that interesting. The restored buildings on the other side of the road are a bit more interesting though, and this area is free so not really a lot to lose if you are in the area, but I don't feel like it's essential if you are not near or are pushed for time.
Barry K — Google review
Ruin grounds themselves not much to see. Perhaps interesting for historians and purveyors of rocks, otherwise not worth visiting. The surrounding grassy area seemed to have the beginnings of a festival, which was cool though.
Jason C — Google review
Seems that they're making this place into something. There's lots of construction/ preservation going on which is a good thing. It really is a beautiful place. Calm, peaceful, amazing fresh air. Very tranquil place to while away some time. You could easily spend a day here, take a picnic, but we were 'touristing' so we spent a few hours before heading to Eiheiji by bus. Possibly my favourite place in this area.

Asakura Ruisns is one of the landmarks in Fukui prefecture that you cannot miss, this historical place is surrounded by beautiful nature and old buildings where you can experience how was the life of Samurai 500 years ago.

I very unique excavation site with a captivating samurai past. The gates to the ruins are particularly beautiful. There are many pretty streams and very large koi you can feed for 100 yen. The samurai village really got my imagination flowing. The town itself is beautiful. A Fukui must see.

Ichijōdani Asakura Family Historic Ruins is one of the most worthwhile attractions in Fukui. Due to the inconvenient transportation of the ruins, we took a bus to the Ichijōdani Asakura Family museum and borrowed bicycles from the museum. The deposit for each bicycle was 1000 yen, and would be refunded after the bicycle was returned. In fact, museum also provided free shuttle service. The staffs of the museum were very kind and patiently guided us to the ruins. Then, we rode the bicycles among the fields and enjoyed the beautiful country scenery. We spended about 10 minutes to reach the ruins. The gate of the ruins was very elegant, and many tourists stop at the front of the door to take pictures. After entering the gate, we saw that many ruins of wells, walls, gardens and palaces were preserved on the ground. Following the stone steps, there was a platform with ruins of water and a bridge. It was said that when the castle was attacked, the castle owner bridge can destroy the bridge to prevent the enemies entering, which is the same as the design of Hikone Castle. Otherwise, there were some photographers taked pictures here.If you have enough time, I will suggest you to spend 2 to 3 hours to enjoy everything here.

Nestled in a serene forest, Daihonzan Eiheiji is a remarkable Zen Buddhist temple complex that dates back to the 13th century. Founded by the revered Zen master Dogen Zenji in 1244, this sacred site embodies tranquility and spiritual depth. Known as the 'Temple of Eternal Peace,' Eiheiji serves as one of the two main temples of Soto Zen Buddhism in Japan. Visitors will find themselves immersed in an atmosphere where wellness and mindfulness are paramount.
The most beautiful temple we visited on our trip. It has such a calm and peaceful feeling. There’s so much to see, and you can also just sit and enjoy the quiet surroundings. We went at the end of March and there was still snow, which made it even more special. Loved it and would definitely recommend visiting.
Reeva S — Google review
A truly beautiful Buddhist temple, I’m so grateful I could come and be blessed with the incredible views of the nature and temple buildings. I really appreciated the Dharma teachings hung up in the corridor near the main entrance as these lessons mean a lot to me and it was so nice being in an environment with great energy as people who practice the same lessons can come together and cultivate the peaceful atmosphere. It was truly a joy for me to walk through the temple and gaze upon all the sights, plus read about the history and meaning behind certain halls on their wooden information tablets.

Definetely a must see place in Japan. Not only it is one of the important #temples in Japan and accomodates Zen monks trainings and practices which visitors can join some of the activities also the surrounding with beautiful tall cedar trees. Amazing view especially during winter when it is snowing. The temple has many buildings connected by covered walkways, it makes it very convenient to experience in #Fukui.

What a place! Although it’s about 30 min away from the Fukui station, this temple is totally worth visiting. The size and the architectural beauty of the temple was simply amazing. Surrounded by magnificent mountain-scape and calm greenery, I almost felt sorry that this place wasn’t well known to foreign tourists (although I was happy with that when I visited there). Highly recommend!!
Young L — Google review
What a magnificent place. If you are a Zen practitioner and in Japan, this should absolutely be on your itinerary. We went to a number of temples while in Japan but the energy you feel at Eiheiji is unmatched. Magnificent trees, building and practice. We spent two days visiting and participating in the morning service and zazen and would have spent a third to do more hiking around the temple. Also what's really nice is because it's out of the typical tourist circuit there are a lot less visitors than any other place we went (we were there on a weekday so don't know about the weekends).
Christopher W — Google review
Amazing temple! The museum at the end was also very interesting. Easy 30 min bus ride from Fukui train station. Only downside are the extra small slippers (none fit me, and I am size 10.5-11 UK)

Eiheiji Temple One-Day Monk Experience – A Peaceful and Enlightening Retreat It took me about 3.5 hours to travel from Tokyo to Fukui, but the journey was absolutely worth it. Eiheiji Temple offers a deeply peaceful and reflective atmosphere, unlike anywhere I’ve ever been. The highlight for me was learning zazen (seated meditation) the proper way. The program had English-speaking guides who were incredibly kind and respectful to us international participants. There were only six of us from abroad, while the rest were Japanese students (around 10–15). They followed a different schedule from us, and honestly, I wish I spoke Japanese to engage more deeply with the experience. We were asked to wake up at 3:50 AM, and interestingly, there was no shower the next day—which I personally found a bit uncomfortable. If given a choice, I’d rather wake at 3:30 AM just to have a quick shower and feel refreshed before starting the day. During the zazen session, the core message was clear: enlightenment comes from within, and practice should be part of daily life. I’ve done meditation before, but Soto Zen teaches you to meditate with your eyes open, which is surprisingly challenging. Even in a quiet space, thoughts and emotions constantly bubble up—nothing too serious, just random things. It feels like you’re quietly observing your own soul. And yes, sitting for 30 minutes will definitely make your legs go numb! They also taught us about mindful eating. There was a beautiful chanting ceremony before meals to express gratitude, which I found really touching. They even gave us souvenir chopsticks and a small booklet so we can continue the practice at home. One of the most powerful moments was the early morning prayer ceremony. All the monks gathered and chanted in unison—it felt sacred, healing, and almost magical. Overall, I learned so much from this one-day monk experience. It wasn’t just about meditation or rituals—it was about slowing down, being present, and finding meaning in small, everyday actions. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a meaningful escape from the busy modern world. The one-day monk experience costs ¥15,000 and must be applied for at least a month in advance. Your application also needs to be approved by the temple. I stayed in the women’s tatami room, and it was surprisingly comfortable and beautiful—it honestly felt a bit luxurious. The soft green and yellow tones were calming and well-coordinated, adding to the serene vibe. What really surprised me was the bath setup—it’s similar to a traditional public bath, where everyone bathes nude. There’s even a large shared hot tub in the center where you can soak and relax. It was an unexpected but authentic part of the experience!
Olive O — Google review
This place is breathtaking and if you can you should definitely stop here for a visit. We arrived by car and parked in one of the first parking lots we found in the village, it was 300 yen for the day and overall was one of the cheapest. From there we walked 10 mins uphill to reach the area where the temple is located. The first impression is majestic with secular trees surrounding the buildings. Once you enter and pay the fee (700 yen per person) you will take off your shoes in the provided bags and will be guided by colorful lines on the wooden floor. Just walking around the area in silence gives you a sense of zen. This place is solemn and you can see monks walking around and taking care of the gardens. There are videos along the way together with informational signs (all translated to English) that provide interesting insights on the history of the temple and how it is used today by the monks living there. This is definitely in the top 5 of the places I visited in Japan.

Maruoka Castle, located in Fukui Prefecture, is a historic hilltop 3-story castle originally built around 1600 and rebuilt after an earthquake. It offers stunning views of the city and surrounding park. The castle is known for its oldest flat-land architectural style among Japan's original castles and has been designated as an important cultural property. With its distinctive unglazed slate roof tiles, the castle stands out as a national treasure.
As one of the 12 remaining castle keeps from the Edo period, it’s a must to visit if you are drawn to Japan Sengoku history. It’s relatively small compare to Himeji or Matsumoto but there are some interesting things to learn about this place.

A well-preserved, historic castle with a picturesque moat invites exploration. In the garden, delicate cherry blossoms bloom, lending the place an almost fairytale-like atmosphere. Visitors have the opportunity to ascend all the way into the tower under the roof – but beware: the stairs are narrow and steep, turning the climb into a small adventure. Inside the castle, a fascinating exhibition awaits, featuring impressive samurai armors, historical weapons, and artistic portraits that offer a vivid insight into bygone eras. Nice to see and take pictures. However, it is not absolutely necessary to go into the castle.
Yasmin G — Google review
Maruoka Castle is a charming little castle with lots of history—it’s actually one of Japan’s oldest surviving castles, built way back in 1576! The original keep is still standing, which is pretty cool. Entrance is ¥450 for adults and ¥150 for kids, so it’s super affordable, and there are group discounts too. The castle sits on a small hill, giving nice views of the surrounding area. Inside, the stairs are pretty steep, so take care if you’re not confident on your feet. There’s also a small museum nearby with some interesting history about the castle. Cherry blossom season here is beautiful, making it a perfect spot for photos and a peaceful stroll. It’s not too crowded, so you can really enjoy the atmosphere. Open daily from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry 4:30 PM). Definitely worth a stop if you’re exploring Fukui!

Maruoka Castle is not the grandest, tallest, toughest, or toughest castle in Japan. But it is easily the loveliest. It gives you a great sense of a moderate mediaeval build, prioritising function over form, while still staying beautiful. I was particularly charmed by the community's efforts to keep the castle ground alive, clean, and attractive. For this purpose an elegant new information hall has been constructed by the side of the caslte, with even part of the old moat restored, to add reflections to the already nice view.

One of the 12 original castles in all of Japan. An interesting visit. Be careful with the stairs to the second and third floors because they are very steep. Perhaps not recommended for older people. With the ticket you can visit the museum of short messages. Very interesting if you can read a little Japanese.

One of the 12 remaining castle that is still standing since Edo era. Good to visit. The town is serene However for kinen medallion coins seekers, you will be disappointed to know that there are no coins made for this attraction.

📖 This is one of the “12 remaining Tenshu” (historical castles). In there you will be able to get to know more about its unusual techniques to build it, history of how they restored the castle after earthquake, and most importantly to touch and feel the building yourself, from the base of well-fitted stones up to the wooden structures, it’s literally an art given the technology back then 400+ years ago. 🎟️ Entry ticket contains castle visit along two other indoor museums (History museum and the “Brief message from the heart museum”) It’s definitely an underrated castle to visit in Japan, highly recommended. 🅿️ Parking: It’s easy to get a parking slot down at the entrance during weekdays, there’s 40 parking space. Further parking spaces are located at the other museum which is just 3mins walk away. (You may visit the official website to find out more)

Shopping mall
Lovely Partner LPa is a popular shopping destination in Fukui, offering a variety of shops and entertainment options. While some visitors find the mall to be smaller than others, it boasts good pastry and sweet shops that are worth the visit. The mall is often crowded due to its limited competition in the area, but it provides a convenient and accessible layout for families to enjoy. With stores like Muji and Uniqlo, shoppers can browse freely without feeling pressured by staff.
Very good for shopping and all things are available

A bit smaller than regular malls but they have good shops especially pastries and sweets, they were really good and worth their price point. It's always crowded since there aren't many malls in the area. Not too many shops for clothes or jewelry but have a decent area for game center, there's also other food shops.
Google review
Good place to do some light shopping and spend time with the family. The place is not crowded and easy to access all the shops. Among others, they have Muji and Uniqlo each of which you can shop freely without hassles from the staff. There are coffee shops and fast food restaurants to have your meals.
Hs D — Google review
Conflicted review... Are there better malls in the world? Of course! Is this the best mall in Fukui, sadly yes. It's Fukui, what do you expect. They have enough here to spend half a day or longer if you catch a movie at the mediocre movie theater here (I gave it 3 stars in another review). I'm not crazy about the restaurants here. Atom Sushi, but not nearly as good as Katsuyama Atom Sushi. Medicore Chinese place. Mos Burger - booo! Pan store. A huge cafeteria with nothing but places that caters to kids, I wouldn't eat there if it was free. A medicore coffee shop. All the best places are in the parking lot or just close to LPA. Hamburger Land is out back. Starbucks in the front parking lot. And an Italian buffet that is pretty good also in the parking lot. Two sports stores. A few palces to get candy. A pet store - boooooo!!! Pet stores like this should be illegal, please don't support places like this that get their animals from puppy mills and kitten mills. Uniclo and Muji, two of the best stores in Japan if your not too stuck up to shop there (yes I have run into people that think they are too good for Uniclo). Every phone store is here as well as my favorite low cost carrier, UQ mobile (I save 7500 yen a month comapred to my old Soft bank plan and get more minutes and data). Oh yeah, there are a ton more restaurants next to the pachinko palor under the movie theater, all very medicore to terrible. How can one place have so many medicore restaurants that are consistently pakced with so many better places less than 1km away?!

Nature & Parks
Yōkōkan Garden, located in Fukui Prefecture, was the second home of the Matsudaira family during the Edo period. This Zen-like venue features a classic tearoom-style building and a picturesque pond at its center. The elegant shoin style architecture and garden make it one of the representative gardens of the mid-Edo period.
Absolutely stunningly beautiful and tranquil gardens! Thank you to Yumi and all the other guides who gave us a tour today - they spoke English, provided helpful and interesting information about the history of the gardens, and were super friendly. Definitely worth a visit when you’re in Fukui!

Nice traditional Japanese garden in the middle of the city. Most if not all of it isn't original due to the war, but still a quiet, serene place with nice architecture.

Had a wonderful time visiting Yokokan Garden in Fukui. The garden is absolutely beautiful—peaceful, well-maintained, and full of charm. During my visit, two friendly Japanese ladies were walking around and kindly took the time to explain some details & history in English about the garden to us, even though we were foreign visitors. Their warm and welcoming attitude made the experience even more special. I highly recommend visiting this lovely place when being in Fukui!

After exploring the Fukui Castle ruins, I stumbled upon this enchanting garden. While it may be small, the highlight of my visit was sitting by the edge of the house and gazing upon the serene Zen garden. Witnessing the reflection on the pond felt like a meditative experience. Visiting during Japan's Golden Week allowed me to witness the azaleas and vibrant new greenery at their peak. I'm already picturing myself returning in the fall to experience the garden's transformation.

The staff were so friendly and informative— I learned about the history and reconstruction of this site, which made the visit even more meaningful. I’ll definitely come back next time I’m in Fukui!

Wish we had more time but we had to rush to catch our train. Beautiful garden and house. It was only after I read the details in the brochure once I'd left I discovered that that this is a reconstruction as the place was burnt down at the end of the war during bombing raids. It was a lovely sunny day on our visit and this made it more alluring. Well worth making the little effort it takes to get here.

This is the beautiful spot & I highly recommend you to visit when you ever go to Fukui city. The view from inside the house overlooking the lake was divine & I could easily stay there for ages. I would love to go back again to feel tranquility of the garden.

Nestled in the heart of Fukui City, the Fukui Castle Ruins offer a glimpse into Japan's storied past. Originally constructed in 1606, this castle served as a powerful stronghold for the Echizen Matsudaira family during the Edo period. Although it was tragically lost to fire in 1669 and never rebuilt, remnants like its impressive stone walls and moats still stand proudly today.
A very pretty sight especially in spring with the cherry blossom. The information signs were very informative and easy to read containing different languages. The castle ruins is a short walk from Fukui station.

Good place to visit if you like castle ruins and history sites. A good place for a walk in the early morning or early evening. Opening hours are daily from 7am - 5pm.

You can see the wonderful stone walls and outer moat. Unfortunately, the prefectural office building is located on the castle ruins. There is a parking lot in the basement of this building. If you present your parking ticket at the information desk at the entrance on the first floor of the prefectural office building, it is free of charge.

Posting because I hadn't seen it mentioned yet, If you are looking for the castle stamp it is inside the main government building. If you are looking for the castle gojoin (similar to but different from the goSHUin) that can be found at the nearby Fukui city museum. If you are on a castle hunt, try to come when the offices are open. There is no castle; just a moat and some signs along with the government buildings but the park is a very nice walk.

Yakitori restaurant
In 2023, Yakitori no meimon Akiyoshi is a popular yakitori restaurant located on the second floor of Fujita Hotel Town. This spacious establishment offers more table seats than counter seats, with a large grill situated at the back. Despite its unassuming presence, the yakitori here is consistently delicious and affordable. Patrons can enjoy various options such as Junkei, shiro, and kalbi in a relaxed ambiance.
Food is awesome!

There were many skewers that were out of stock or out of stock, but they were cheap and delicious. Cucumbers are also delicious enough to be served with beer. I often go to order. It seems like it's out of stock over there. That's fine. However, the staff are incomprehensible. Nee-chan can't hear the words Funya is out of stock. I asked the third floor again after being told, but I couldn't understand it at all. I don't even want to talk about it anymore. to the staff in advance When I was told that I couldn't make a reservation, I went back to my room and came back. Have you made a reservation? I was told. I wonder if you're being silly. Also, don't you have tissues or paper napkins? I wonder if everyone won't get a runny nose after cooking and eating. I don't really understand that point either. (Translated by Google) I visited this restaurant with a colleague after work. Apparently it's difficult to get a seat without a reservation, but we were able to get in after just a few minutes. Since it was my first time, I ordered a drink and scanned the menu, but since it's a reasonably priced restaurant, I decided to order as much as I could. Most yakitori is sold in units of five, and when I ordered the restaurant's top recommendation, the pure yakitori with white and cabbage, they were all ready fairly quickly, likely because they only had a limited number of yakitori available. The yakitori itself is small but flavorful, and the chewy pure yakitori is addictive. Other grilled dishes are also under 500 yen for five skewers, so you can order without worrying about your budget. Since I have to pay expenses and the limit is 15,000 yen, I often check the total to see how things go. Even though I felt bad about the hassle, I decided to ask them to confirm the price. The second time, they rudely told me to stop, but I think they could have been a little more blunt. Also, this restaurant is rude, not even responding to my "thank you" when they bring out the food. Well, it's a chain restaurant, so I guess that's to be expected. That's why I'm giving the service a low rating. At other restaurants, they're happy to accommodate if you tell them your budget, and if you're concerned about price, they'll understand your intentions, but this restaurant is completely lacking in that regard. Well, it's a delicious restaurant at a reasonable price, so there's no point in expecting too much in terms of service, which is why I gave it this rating.

Japanized western restaurant
Europe-ken Owada, a popular Japanized western restaurant, was bustling during the Obon festival. Despite the crowd, they efficiently seated visitors, including couples who were guided to window-facing counter seats separated by a barrier. The menu boasted delectable dishes such as draft beer with sauce cutlet bowl and flavorful fried rice. The balance between the thick cutlet and tangy sauce created an appetizing experience. While the fried rice had a standard Chinese taste, it proved to be delicious nonetheless.
(Translated by Google) This is the soul food of Fukui prefecture residents. Even when people from other prefectures try it, they don't rate it as incredibly delicious or good value for money, but rather it's a familiar taste. It's just a cutlet with rice soaked in sauce, that's all, so it's completely different from the egg-covered cutlets of Kanto, the medium-thick sauce and cabbage of Nagano, or the soy sauce of Saitama. Only Owada and Toshima serve the traditional thin cutlets of consistent quality, while the main store serves slightly thicker, less well-pounded cutlets. Even if the signboard is the same, the quality varies from shop to shop, so if it's a taste you'll remember, or you're returning because you thought it was delicious on a previous trip, you'll get the same thing at the same restaurant. Oden restaurant
"石田屋" is an oden pub located in front of Fukui Station, offering a variety of Fukui sake. The restaurant is known for its famous fried tofu dish, which attracts many visitors. The menu offers a wide selection of items to choose from, making it difficult to decide what to order. Despite visiting in the summer, the experience feels like a taste of Hokuriku with their delicious oden.
Nice staff and food. The female owner can speak English and recommended us some good food. The oden and its soup is a must try.

Local reviews say this place is good but it’s merely mediocre at best. Service is terrible despite speaking to the staff in Japanese, most rudest response is from an old lady (I guess she’s in charge) when the grilled squid I ordered came cold (after waiting 20mins for it). Better just dine elsewhere. Also it stinks inside because it’s smoking indoors.

Once inside, it's just normal (lol). Although it wasn't listed on the lunch menu, they offered an oden set meal when I asked (the ingredients are chosen by the chef, and it comes with salad, pickles, miso soup, and a simmered dish). I visited for dinner last year and the oden in the clear broth was so delicious that I wanted to eat it again, so I invited a friend. This time, it was just as delicious, and I even drank the soup. However, I didn't feel thirsty afterward. I wanted to order skewers, but they're only available in the evening. What a shame. I'll have to go back in the evening. Taihei is praised as the finest eatery in Fukui, according to a local source, and I wholeheartedly concur. The menu revolves around top-notch ingredients that reign supreme here. Their selection of sake is exceptional as well. One delightful surprise was the delectable taste of grilled fresh seaweed. Sitting at the bar counter allows for engaging with the chef, making it a must-do experience. My recent visit without a reservation turned out to be a fantastic dinner.
It was lunch on 2024.11.25. We don’t speak Japanese but Taihei offered the greatest hospitality and communicated with us with much patience to make sure we were happy with our orders. We were interested in trying the Echizen crab, which I suspect was not on the regular lunch menu, but the chef kindly accommodated and it was absolutely delicious. Our thanks and compliments to the chef and his team. It was good memory for us and we would love to be back.

I wasn’t planning on writing this. The food tasted good, but the portions were small. I wrote the same comment on taberoku(a Japan app). What I find hardest to accept is they deleted my comment on the Japan’s APP. So I strongly suspect that their service for customers is inadequate.

A local told me this is the best restaurant in Fukui, and I fully agree. Ingredients dictate everything and they have the best here. Sake choice is great. I was treated with a grilled fresh seaweed and was surprised by how tasty it can be. Must eat by bar counter and interact with the chef. Top notch!

Small, small small mall with an ice skating rink out front and very limited food options. The souvenir stores were nice to visit but not really worth your time to visit. Fukui Station is right next to this mall which had much more to offer.

We came due to purchasing the fukui fun pass, which allowed us to get the soba coupon and the 1000 yen happiring coupon. Experience: A decent albeit limited variety of restaurants serving local specialties, including oroshi soba. There were stores selling omiyage too, with a popup Pokémon store at the time of visit. Hits: We liked the food from amida soba and gaburi chicken. Miss: slightly small variety of shopping. Tips: do note that you can only utilize the fun pass 3 "times", with the 300yenx4 soba coupon and 1000 yen coupon redemption considered 1 "time" each. If you're planning to visit attractions using the fun pass, we recommend maximising the value by redeeming the 1 day echizen rail ticket (1700 yen worth), followed by the aquarium (1500 yen worth), before considering the mall coupons, and the soba coupons only if you're ok with eating soba 3-4 times.

This is quickly becoming Fukui City's centerpiece. There are a lot of restaurants and attractions inside, but the best place is the terrace just outside, in front of the station. There are activities here just about every week, and even when there is nothing happening it is a great plaza just to sit or to meet friends.

(visits: countless) Ehhh. Its a nice building. So I give it that. the parking is REALLY expensive. I don't think there is a single drink machine in the entire building except the basement. Last time I was there I checked all 6 floors twice and could not find one. The restaurants leave a lot to be desired. Since they built the building they have tried been changing the eating arrangements. They have a steak place that I had an enkai at. Overpriced, surprise surprise and not a single piece of steak. It was pasta and fries and ham. Lol. There is a library, at least I think its a library. There is also some rooms you can rent for events, which is mainly why I go for teaching meetings. I think the place is a pain to get, but when ever we have meetings here we have more attendees than anywhere else and everyone seems to think its convenient. I don't know... waiting 1 hour to park and 200 yen an hour, not to mention we got charged for 6 hours when it was 5 hours and 2 min.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Fukui Station is a futuristic and easily navigable transportation hub that serves as a gateway to the idyllic countryside of Fukui, Japan. This region offers a blend of wild nature, traditional crafts, and samurai-era sites for visitors to explore. The station is set to become even more accessible with the upcoming Hokuriku Shinkansen line from Tokyo in 2024.
We arrived in early November 2024 to transfer to a local train line that would take us to the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum. To our surprise, Fukui Station turned out to be a uniquely themed transportation hub centered around dinosaurs. The clean, spacious environment, combined with vibrant dinosaur decor, created an unforgettable atmosphere. We couldn't resist taking a few photos before boarding the local train to the museum, which is conveniently located in the building adjacent to Fukui Station. After exploring the wonders of the Fukui Dinosaur Museum and while waiting for our train back to Kanazawa, we decided to venture nearby the station. There, we enjoyed delicious local soba at a restaurant situated in a building next to the station. We also took the opportunity to explore the exterior of the dinosaur-themed Fukui Station. Additionally, we noticed a sitting area in the station that offered a fantastic view of a miniature model of Fukui's city center. Unfortunately, our itinerary did not include a stay in Fukui, but we make it a point to explore the area more thoroughly on our next trip.

Nice layout and nice amount of stores within Fukui Station. Good amount of restaurants are around as well. I love how Fukui really owns the dinosaur theme and some statues are in and around the station as well. Not particularly busy on a Monday evening either. Trains are easy to navigate and the station is conveniently located.
Vinny F — Google review
Dinosaurs in a station? Of course! This station is amazing. Check out the dinos front and back too.

The station features dinosaur statues both inside and outside, which are the signature of the place. I really love the cozy atmosphere here.

Fukui station is largely dinosaur themed. It is newly opened and just now serves the HokurikU Shinkansen line for Tokyo and Tsuruga. It is the hub for the Hapi Fukui line serving most of the prefecture. A few Shinkansen trains take a stop here. Many department stores line the square, such as CuruF. A park outside has built in dinosaur animatronics.
Lucas L — Google review
A nice station overall with plenty of food options and a very cool entrance with Animatronic dinosaurs. The station is relatively small and well laid out. Very hard to get lost in this station.

Ramen restaurant
Noodle shop
Hachiban Ramen, a popular noodle shop in Fukui city, offers a delightful variety of ramen dishes. Located conveniently near Fukui JR station in an arcade, this restaurant is easily accessible for visitors. One dish that stands out is the Shio-butter ramen, known for its delectable combination of thick noodles and vegetables. Additionally, their Gyoza (fried dumplings) complements the ramen perfectly.
I went here on January 2, 2025 as I transit at Fukui station from Kanazawa to Tsuruga. I arrived just few minutes before lunch time, so I got a seat pretty easily. The staffs were very friendly and helpful, escorting me to my seat. The food was great! I ordered the set menu with gyoza and it was fulfilling, although I bought the half sized ones. Seems that this chain is only available in Hokuriku region. Definitely a must if you’re stopping by!
Alvania K — Google review
Local chain, apparently. They offer a couple different broth flavors and bulk up the bowls with vegetable toppings like cabbage. I appreciated the wavy noodles and the chashu had a deep pork flavor and soft texture, although the slices were so thin that paying extra for more felt like a losing battle. My partner enjoyed the hits of garlic in the gyoza that came with her set meal.
Dan P — Google review
The 8ban Ramen I had in Kanazawa was also available at Fukui Station. I'll eat the ramen there before heading back to Tokyo.
Yuko K — Google review
Seems to be a regional specialty ramen chain, so I had to try. Overall decent Ramen, has a lot of veggies which seems to be the special style. The vegetable miso broth I chose was bold and savory, noodles thicker and chewy. Overall satisfying, bold ramen, not something for every day in my opinion. Price is a bit on the higher side. Recommended.
Hogi B — Google review
One of my favourite noodle shops in Fukui city. You will find many hachiban ramen branches through out the city. This shop locates in an arcade next to Fukui JR station and very handy to visit. My favourite noodle is Shio-butter ramen. Futomen (thick noodles) and vegetables are just so yummy to taste😀 Gyoza ( fried dumplings) is good to go with ramen.
A K — Google review
(Translated by Google) This shop is just a few minutes away from the Osaka station and serves one bowl of Chinese noodles topped with mayonnaise. If you add nothing else, it tastes like a regular mazesoba, but if you add the complimentary Hachiban vinegar, it increases the acidity and changes the flavor. There are a fair number of single seats, so it's easy to go in solo.

(Translated by Google) [September 2025] I came here following a local recommendation. First, I chose the classic "miso" ramen. The tablet screen said it was a "value set," but the price was the same whether I ordered the ramen individually or as part of the set. (When I calculated, there was a discrepancy of about 2 yen.) The flavor was basically tanmen with a light miso flavor. In other words, I wasn't particularly impressed. Also, the noodles were different from regular miso ramen, with a "flat" cross-section, and it felt like they were refusing to mix with the soup. I'm a big fan of miso ramen, but for some reason, I just couldn't get used to the flavor. So, as a last resort, I added a little grated garlic. This made it taste much better as tanmen, but still not like miso ramen. On the other hand, I thought the gyoza I chose as part of the set tasted pretty good. Well, that's about it.

During a business trip to Fukui, I made a reservation in advance at Kuzushikappobonta Fukui 1 Maeten. Although the tatami room in the back seemed a bit small for our group of five, it was still comfortable. The lack of a digging type table was slightly inconvenient. Nevertheless, we started our meal by toasting with draft beer and enjoying local sake.

On a business trip to Fukui ~ At night, I made a reservation at this shop in advance. Start by passing through the tatami room in the back ~ Is it a little small for 5 people? Also, it was a bit painful because it wasn't a digging type ... Well, first, after toasting with draft beer ... I started eating while drinking local sake. When making a reservation in advance, I ordered assorted sashimi and Seiko crabs for each person. Thanks to you, I'm glad that the food was served at the right time ~ The crab was delicious! I have to order at this time! After that, I'm full by ordering mainly Fukui's local dishes!

The restaurant is very close to the station the location was great . They have 1st and 2nd floor but the entrances of the both floor’s is different. Staff was friendly and kind . They explained the today’s sashimi plate. They have English menu on the tablet. I ordered fried puffer fish, rice set, sashimi plate and rolled egg omelette. Rice was good , miso was extremely bland , no taste at all, I couldn’t finish it . Sashimi plate was great , sweet shrimp was my favorite it was so creamy. I was excited for the puffer fish but it wasn’t that good. Overall not bad , I would recommend to go if you have time .

The seafood don LUNCH is perfect: super fresh food, great vinegar rice recommended by the staff and nice dishware. Very quiet and relaxing lunch i honestly enjoyed every single bit of it. Therefore, I went back to have dinner the next day. The potato salad is still good but the beef steak was very average. The beef itself is good as typical wagyu. But the sauce was way too salty/heavy for the meat. I should have sent it back but I didn't. It seems to me it was the chef was too busy dealing with some non-Japanese customers. Sigh, I finished this underwhelmed steak and left right away.

Conveyor belt sushi restaurant
Kita-no-Oyaji is a conveyor belt sushi restaurant that caters to children by offering eggs and child-sized chairs. Although there is no parking lot, patrons can conveniently use the nearby coin parking. The seating options include a counter or a table for two, with the counter being the quicker choice. Prices for their sushi plates range from 100 to 880 yen. Unlike larger corporations, they don't utilize touch panels but instead have rotating options.
(Translated by Google) The toppings are large and it looks nice, but the price is also quite high, so it's worth the price. (2021/10) ◼︎Visit time Saturday lunchtime ◼︎Visit method On foot. Located in a commercial facility right next to Fukui Station. ◼︎Atmosphere and crowd level inside the store There were about 20 seats at the counter and about 4 seats in the box. Although it was lunchtime, the number of customers was about 30%. ◼︎Menu ordered Three types of luxury, three types of white meat, etc. ◼︎Impressions The three deluxe dishes are grilled sea bream, fatty tuna, and white shrimp. The Nodoguro was sweet and delicious. The white shrimp has a lot of flying shrimp on top, and a little bit of white shrimp. Although it is unavoidable that the amount of white shrimp is small because it is expensive, the amount of white shrimp is so high that the mouth feels like a warship. The toppings are large and it looks nice, but the price is also quite high, so it's worth the price. However, considering the price, I felt that the grip could be a little better (maybe it's just a coincidence).

(Translated by Google) I use it every time I come to Fukui. All the items are delicious. When I visited in July, it was empty as it was off-hours, and I was able to place my order right away.I was relieved to see the old man in front of the restaurant chatting with the elementary school students, but this time it was at the same time as the store opened. The seats filled up quickly, and the staff members seemed a bit grumpy... On Saturdays and Sundays, there is a possibility that you won't be able to get a seat even if you arrive at opening time (especially in the box seats for families), so it might be a good idea to line up early or go outside.

It is conveniently located within the building and is easily accessible. All of the sushi is delicious, and there are some that you don't often find in Tokyo. And conveyor belt sushi style. I think this is a restaurant where you can quickly eat delicious Hokuriku fish. The amberjack was a particularly thick topping, so it was very filling and satisfying. After that, the soup is also delicious, so I recommend it.

After browsing for souvenirs at Hapilin near the station or Prism, it's the perfect location for a quick bite to eat while you wait for your train. The red snow crab gunkan, white shrimp, and raw snow crab, which were piled high enough to spill over, were typical of Hokuriku and I enjoyed them. It's not bad for a conveyor belt sushi restaurant, and I think it's generally worth the price. However, unfortunately, the customer service is not very good. A vibrant sushi eatery, くるくる寿司ほがらか亭, stands out in Fukui for its delectable offerings. Their plates are brimming with succulent shrimp, mackerel, and grilled eel. This top-notch conveyor belt sushi spot also boasts mouthwatering warm egg sushi and baked fish, along with refreshing halved melons adorned with ice cream. Additionally, their sashimi-topped sushi is a true delight.
Fukui's top conveyor belt sushi restaurant! They have the most delicious warm egg sushi and baked fish as well as halved melons with ice cream! They have delicious sashimi topped sushi as well! It's more expensive however ~ 2 to 3 times the price of the 1$ places. Great for dates and appointments!

(Translated by Google) I saw this restaurant online as a local recommendation, so I visited Fukui specifically to try it. The day I visited was during the Obon holiday, and I'd heard that the parking lot could be so crowded that it was nearly impossible to find a spot, so I arrived an hour before opening. There was already one car waiting, and the parking lot filled up quickly before opening. Since it was my first time, I didn't understand the system, but the restaurant opened around 10:10 and I was able to get my EPARK ticket. I was number 9, but I managed to get in on the first round just in time. The sushi was just as good as the reviews said, with large portions and every piece delicious! I didn't mind the price, so it wasn't cheap at around 15,000 yen for two adults, but I was satisfied. By the time I left the restaurant a little after 11:00, the parking lot was full, and cars were lined up all the way out onto the street. The restaurant opened early, so I could have a late breakfast. Since I was traveling, I could still eat around 2:00 PM, so I'd like to return when it opens again on my next visit. (Translated by Google) This is a wonderful sushi restaurant. There is no background music inside the restaurant, and it is very quiet. Some sushi is served from the conveyor belt, but basically you order from a touch panel and the chef hands you the plate. The sushi toppings were thick and super fresh. I had sea urchin, fatty tuna, striped jack, and more. Of particular note was the lightly seared grunt, the flesh and rice melted in my mouth as one. It was the first time I had nigiri sushi like that. It is quite unusual to see a place with the Mona Lisa on display, but this was an absolutely great sushi restaurant. Have been to Echizen several times before, but never during Golden Week. Nishiyama Park is quite large, with a lot to do whether it’s a festival season or not. There’s a gorgeous fountain, many trails and footpaths that you can take, and gorgeous views of the entire prefecture from a children’s park atop the hill. There is a small zoo at the top of the hill that is free to be public (though a 100yen donation is suggested and highly appreciated), and there are several primates, birds, and most prominently, a Red Panda (or Lesser Panda) exhibit complete with a walk through enclosure, family tree, and breeding program information. The park itself was beautiful because we happened to visit during the Azalea Festival, with entire hillsides covered in beautiful flowers, lanterns, and of course many vendor booths selling traditional Japanese street food, as well as many Azalea flavored confections. A gorgeous stop if you’re traveling around Echizen!

Nishiyama Park's hillside zoo in Sabae City is home to several rare and endangered species of fauna, including brown-eared pheasants. The open air enclosures at the zoo hold a remarkable quantity of red pandas, which can be observed from a proximity of one meter or less. Visitors are treated to picturesque views of the city while enjoying the sights and sounds of the animals. This attraction is definitely worth traveling to see.
You can enjoy the adorable red pandas at no cost! I spent over an hour in their playroom, and they appeared happy and well-cared for in their environment. Unlike other zoos where their habitats are enclosed in glass, here you can observe them up close! Can’t wait to visit them again 🤩

Echizen Soba no Sato, established over 90 years ago, offers a comprehensive experience of soba-making. Visitors can savor freshly made Echizen soba and explore the local products. The village also provides workshops for making soba, requiring advance reservations. Additionally, the area is renowned for its delectable local delicacies such as Echizen crab and other Fukui specialties.
Real traditional Japanese noodles restaurant. You can learn how to make them and buy they products as well. Along the noodles soups and dishes, they have special soft creams that are delicious! I wanted to try one of Fukui’s specialties: Echizen soba, and ended up here because of the higher number of Google reviews. We ordered several set meals to share, including the 100th anniversary special. Everything we tried was delicious. The Echizen soba had good flavor, though the texture was softer than I expected and the buckwheat aroma was also milder than I thought. We also got to try another Fukui specialty on their menu: the sauce katsudon, which came with a tangy sauce and was very tasty. They offer many seasonal menu items as well. This place is located in an industrial area, and only later did I realize it is actually part of the factory that produces Echizen soba. The restaurant is within the souvenir shop and it’s convenient to browse after your meal.

Okamoto Otaki Shrine, also known as Okamoto Shrine, is a unique and tranquil shrine located in Japan. It is the only shrine in the country dedicated to the goddess of paper, with a fascinating legend surrounding its origins. The shrine features beautiful traditional wooden architecture set amidst a serene forest, creating a peaceful atmosphere that encourages visitors to slow down and relax. The main shrine boasts amazing architecture with a unique roof and intricate carvings, making it worth spending time observing.
This is a beautiful little shrine. There are only a few buildings but the detail and forest backdrop make it special.

Very nice wooden shrine with beautiful carvings of dragons. The shrine is completely surrounded by nature with tall trees. We visited late in the afternoon and there were only 4 other people visiting the area which made the experience even better. We did not spend a lot of time here though but it was overall a good decision to come visit it. We drove to get here and the streets were pretty narrow but eventually we got into the main road. There is free parking on site with big signs that will guide you there.

Amazing architecture of the main shrine, with such a unique roof and intricate carvings all around. I will suggest spending some time just to observe the shrine building. The entire shrine site is well sized with a few large trees. When I was there, there was heavy rain which made some mini waterfalls on the shrine area That was pretty unique and cool.
Rtexal T — Google review
One of the most beautiful Shrine of Japan, hugely underrated. But it is a good thing as it allows the place to keep its calm and resourceful energy.
SITIO S — Google review
Beautiful old traditional wooden architecture. A very imposing type of building, standing quite tall, among the even taller trees. Presumably a very old bit of forest. The day I visited it had been raining, which added (positively) to the forest effect. The area is tranquil and gives of an atmosphere that encourages taking it easy. It will definitely slow you down from any bustling city lifestyle. Parking is a bit confusing, but free once you find it - it's on the south-east side, so you'll drive past the shrine initially. The place is not wheelchair-accessible as it requires climbing a flight of stairs to enter the inner shrine grounds. The paths in the outer shrine grounds can be traversed in a wheelchair without much trouble. The toilet is hard to reach on foot, and not wheelchair-accessible, but at least it's there. Entry to the inner shrine grounds is also free.

The Noritake Kinashi exhibition at the Fukui City Art Museum garnered a good number of visitors on a weekday. The art, which featured hand motifs, caught their attention. Notably, cardboard figures added an element of individuality and joy to the displays. Surprisingly, photography was allowed inside the museum, something uncommon in such establishments. A favorite work gifted to a daughter resulted in shared laughter and continued happiness even after returning home.
This is a great museum! The exhibits are quite nice. Don't trust Google Maps' driving directions though... They will route you around to where you can't get in. Take Route 8 and turn at Itagaki just before the museum to reach the parking lot.

A large, gently spiraling slope extends up to the third floor. It's a slope that even small children will enjoy. The windows allow the bright, vibrant green scenery to shine into the museum. It's a cool building, but the art is by no means eccentric or difficult to understand. Offering a wide range of benefits, including warding off evil spirits, warding off misfortune, improving financial luck, and praying for safe childbirth, the shrine attracts a steady stream of worshippers from both local and international audiences. Reviews include: "The air feels crisp and purified as soon as you enter the grounds," "The many fun places to experience worship, such as the wishing stone, the caressing stone, and the misfortune-breaking stone," "The dragon painting on the ceiling is breathtaking! (Translated by Google) The shrine, pronounced Keyakurotatsu Shrine, enshrines Takaokami and Kuraokami as its main deities. The bus stop is "Asuwayama Koenshita," but if you're traveling by Fukui Railway, the closest approach is from the crosswalk north of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry tram stop. It's not too far to walk from Fukui Station; head west along the Asuwa River bank, cross Sakurabashi Bridge, and turn left onto Koen-dori Street, heading south. The approach to the shrine will be on your right. If you're driving, you can cross Sakurabashi Bridge, but the traffic light at Sanai Intersection is long and the road is narrow, so it's easier to turn left onto Kubomachi at Tsukumobashi Bridge on Chuo-dori Street, one stop ahead. The shrine's parking lot is small, but you can drive right up to the cliffs within the grounds. Head west from Aioi Intersection and enter from the left side of the slope leading up to Asuwayama Park. Coming up from Koen-dori, you pass through the torii gate and go up the stairs to find the main shrine directly ahead. The gift shop is located to the left and rear of the main shrine, facing west. A shrine maiden is usually on hand to sell the goods, and there are a ton of different types and quantities of gifts for wishes, so you can pick and choose what you like (a very experienced saleswoman). On the south side of the shrine grounds, Nishinomiya Ebisu Shrine is located as a branch shrine, facing north. The grounds are not particularly large, but the shrine enshrines Hachiman and Hakusan, and Takaokami and Kuraokami are said to be deities connected to wolf worship, especially in western Japan. The shrine's name, Keyaya, plays on the character for "keya," and the shrine also has a history of praying for the Black Dragon and flood control of the Kuzuryu River. It is a power spot that is said to be able to dispel evil spirits and dispel negative feelings with its strong power. It is said to be a shrine for warding off evil spirits, improving vitality, praying for children and safe childbirth, and for prosperous business. This shrine was founded as a guardian deity of the Kuzuryu River, and is considered one of the four great Myojin deities in ancient Japan, and is a god that bestows the power to exterminate demons and make them surrender using the power of Buddha. As you walk around the precincts, which are not very large, you will find a wishing stone, and it is said that if you make a wish and hit the stone three times, your wish will come true. Yoshino Sushi is situated in a location that is not in the city center and is illuminated at night. Despite it being a weekday, the lack of reservation led to a full house by 18:30. It is advisable to make a reservation beforehand, as some patrons had to forego waiting and enter. The cost performance was remarkable, especially with regards to the additional horse mackerel and fatty tuna rolls which were large and delectable.
Awesome sushi experience, and one of the best in Fukui. This is a family run, multi-generation sushi restaurant. Top quality. Highly recommended!!

(Translated by Google) This sushi restaurant is located less than 10 minutes walk from Fukui Station. I visited on a weekday evening. The restaurant has 6 counter seats and 5 tatami tables. I went there just after opening at 5:30 p.m., so there were 2 groups of customers ahead of me, but it seemed like they had many reservations. The menu included single nigiri and rolls, assorted nigiri, and grilled snacks such as salt-grilled blackthroat seaperch and teriyaki bluefin tuna, fried foods such as fried horse mackerel and fried oysters, sashimi, and heshiko. From that, I had a vinegared dish platter, heshiko snacks, and premium nigiri, and I also added horse mackerel and yellowtail. The vinegared dish platter included a variety of ingredients such as gizzard shad, octopus, crab, scallops, whelks, and uzaku, and the flavors were not too strong and were all refreshing and delicious, which went well with alcohol. The special nigiri sushi is 3,160 yen, and includes fatty tuna, sweet shrimp, sea urchin, flounder, crab, conger eel, squid, whelk, tuna rolls, and egg, making it a great deal for the price. Everything was delicious, but the sea urchin in particular was of the highest quality, with firm chunks, no unpleasant odor, and a very strong sweetness that made it absolutely delicious. It was a great place to get tasty sushi at a reasonable price, and it was so good that I'd like to visit again when I come to Fukui. Thank you for the meal. (Translated by Google) I returned for a weekday lunch. The course for this day in late July began with appetizers of Ishikawa fish bones and Toyama Shinminato botan shrimp, followed by skipjack tuna, hairy crab chawanmushi, abalone and octopus, followed by sushi including nodoguro (rosy seabass), flounder, grunt, Japanese jack mackerel, bonito, Kenzaki squid, lean fish, sweet shrimp, tokishirazu (sea urchin), herring, medium fatty tuna, kanpyo rolls, tamagoyaki (rolled omelet), miso soup and, for dessert, matcha blancmange. Everything was spectacular, but as usual, I'll pick out a few and share my impressions. First of all, the first dish was the bones and botan shrimp. The botan shrimp in particular were from Shinminato, Toyama, and were so large I wondered if they could be this big, with a firm texture and strong sweetness that flooded my mouth. Next up was the abalone and octopus. They were simply steamed without any special preparation, but the saltiness of the abalone itself made for an exquisite seasoning. The soft texture allowed the flavor to seep out, making it incredibly delicious. For sushi, we had the sea urchin, which was generously placed on top. It was incredibly sweet and delicious, and the flavor of the nori was also great. It didn't overpower the sea urchin, but added a lingering aftertaste that was truly enjoyable. And then there was the herring, which was thick, just the right amount of fatty, and incredibly sweet. I'd imagine it's a fish with lots of small bones, but not even a single bone was noticeable, and this alone shows how carefully prepared it was. It was amazing. Once again, I was thoroughly satisfied from start to finish. It was well worth the trip all the way to Fukui. I hope to return! Thank you for the meal.
