Shirakawa-go is a historical village nestled in a remote mountain area and is renowned for its traditional Gassho-style farmhouses. This site, along with Gokayama, has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its unique architectural heritage. The villages' large houses with steeply pitched thatched roofs are exceptional examples of their kind in Japan.
A great way to spend at least a few hours! The surprisingly free village has plenty of food, shops, and natural beauty, with a dedicated paid world heritage site. There are plenty of routes around the village, with all sorts of hidden beauty if you look in any direction (check out the fish by pathways)! Make sure you visit the buildings highlighted on the tourist map, and remember that locals still live here. It was disappointing seeing other tourists treating people's homes like photoshoots. Regardless, there's lots of opportunities for photos, without intruding on others' privacy.

A different Japanese countryside experience. When you tour Shirakawago Village, you get to visit centuries-old traditional Gassho-Zukuri farmhouses characterized by steep triangle thatched roofing. The detailing of how it’s assembled can be seen from underneath it. These farmhouses are well preserved and many are still residence to the locals. There’s a few things you can do here. There are 3 big houses open to the public, some shrines and temples, and a walking path. There’s a lot of snack shops and souvenir shops you can browse in, as well as a lot of photo spots. There’s an observation deck where you can get a view of the whole village, 400m from the main path, but we weren’t able to go up. We had 2 hours to go around, which wasn’t enough. Perhaps 3-4 hours is a good time to spend in the village if you want to do everything there is to do, and go inside all the houses. We got our tour tickets via Klook, and there’s 2 stops in total—Takayama, a suburban economic city district dating back to the Edo period where old wooden houses still stand, and Shirakawago, a more secluded village compared to Takayama, both located in the mountainous Gifu region. We had 2 hours to go around in each of the stops. All in all it’s a nice peek into the mountain countryside. It’s quiet and peaceful.

Recommendation for Visiting Shirakawa-go Village An Unforgettable Experience: A Journey Back in Time to the Heart of Traditional Japan Welcome to Shirakawa-go! If you're looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of the big cities, our historic village, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the perfect destination for you. A visit here is an exceptional opportunity to experience rural Japan and its traditional way of life, offering a stark and beautiful contrast to the country's modern pace. Architectural Wonder: The Gassho-zukuri Houses Shirakawa-go is famous for its unique Gassho-zukuri houses—massive wooden structures with steeply pitched, thatched roofs that resemble "hands held in prayer." These buildings are a masterpiece of local engineering, designed to withstand the region's heavy snowfall and offering a fascinating glimpse into the ingenuity of the area's residents. Tranquility and Authenticity: Walk along the quiet paths, listen to the gentle flow of the river, and feel the rural serenity. The village houses aren't just an attraction; they are living homes that offer insight into life from centuries past. We highly recommend visiting homes open to the public, such as Kanda House or Wada House, to see the traditional hearth and the original use of the roof space for sericulture (silkworm farming). Breathtaking Vistas: Don't miss the ascent to the Shiroyama Viewpoint. The panoramic view of the entire village, with its sloping roofs set against the changing backdrop of the mountains, is the most iconic and photographed sight in Japan. Experience a Different Side of Japan Shirakawa-go offers an illuminating lesson in culture and simplicity. This is the place to slow down, reconnect with nature, and experience the deep-rooted traditions of Japanese culture.

Absolutely beautiful village with a rich history. Walking around the area is easy for the most part. The observation deck is up a hill but not arduous. Lovely to walk around the main village. If travelling in by bus you should book in advance. Please be mindful of the village's rules: no smoking, no littering, no entering private residences etc.

This place was amazing, I only had about 2.5hrs to explore this place and while I felt satisfied I wish I had a car so I could stay as long as I wanted. That being said if you are doing the Limon tour bus option it’s plenty of time. The place has food and bathrooms but no trash. Any trash you have must be thrown away at home (not a complaint but just a warning to anyone) This place is just beautiful and aw inspiring, j truly think everyone deserves to see it. Autumn is probably the best time because of all the leaves changing colors. There’s tons of houses, shops, and vendors as well to get unique items. It’s honestly hard to explain why but I know that if you come here you will understand it’s a sight to be seen and worth the time. It’s also very close to Kanazawa so you could make this a day trip by car.

The world-famous Shirakawa-go is a picturesque mountain village known for its traditional gassho-zukuri houses — charming wooden farmhouses with steep thatched roofs designed to withstand heavy snow. Nestled in a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains, the village offers a glimpse into Japan’s rural heritage and architectural ingenuity. The area is always bustling with tourists, especially during weekends and holidays, as visitors from around the world come to admire its UNESCO World Heritage–listed scenery. You’ll find many souvenir shops, cafés, and eateries lining the main streets, making it easy to enjoy local snacks or pick up traditional crafts. However, the popularity of Shirakawa-go does make it feel somewhat commercialized, with parts of the village catering heavily to tourism. Compared to Miyama, a similar traditional village near Kyoto, Shirakawa-go feels more lively but less tranquil and authentic. The car park opposite Shirakawa-go is somehow reserved for tourist bus only, and if you drive, have to park on top of the hill and take the free shuttle bus back to the main car park. Still, it remains a must-visit destination for its unique atmosphere and breathtaking views.
Wesley W — Google review
Get here EARLY! We were there around 11am and we had to park in the over flow lot up the hill (they have shuttles to take you down). It felt like Disneyland, there were so many tourists it didn’t feel authentic. It was interesting though and if you get off the main drag you can find some quiet moments.

Visited Shirakawa-go during the transition from summer to fall, and it was absolutely beautiful. The village is calm and serene, surrounded by stunning scenery and peaceful vibes. I’d love to come back again in winter to see it covered in snow!

History Museums
Hida no Sato Open Air Museum, also known as Hida Folk Village, is a captivating open-air museum that replicates a traditional Japanese mountain village. It showcases over 30 historical houses and buildings from the local region, including Edo-period farmhouses with distinctive steep thatched roofs in the gassho-zukuri style. Some of these remarkable houses were actually relocated from the UNESCO World Heritage Site Shirakawa-go.
What a cool spot. This place is packed with history, culture, and some beautiful scenery to top it off. You can take the bus up, but we just walked — it’s a pretty easy stroll from the town center. Tickets were under 1,000 yen for both of us (from memory), and well worth it. You get to explore a bunch of old traditional houses with thatched roofs, all laid out like an old mountain village. The architecture is unreal, and the displays showing how people lived and worked back then were really interesting. There were shrines around the grounds, and we even saw some live demonstrations — stuff like woodcarving and pottery, which gave the whole place a hands-on feel. It’s peaceful, open, and a great way to step back in time for a few hours. Would definitely recommend if you’re in Takayama and want to see something a bit different.

A peaceful and pleasant open-air museum that gives a good feel of traditional Hida architecture and lifestyle. The whole area is easy to explore on foot, with many well-preserved houses you can enter and explore freely. Apart from viewing the traditional houses, there are also a few fun activities set up near the entrance. We got to try shooting water from a traditional bamboo water gun and walking on bamboo stilts. Simple but surprisingly fun, especially for kids. Parking is paid together with the entrance ticket at the counter.

The highlight of Takayama! After purchasing a cheap entry ticket, you can spend a few hours walking around the village, optionally following one of the 3 routes pictured on a provided map (from quick route to visiting all 20 or so buildings). Every building is unique, and provides lots of information on specific parts of village life. The buildings themselves are transported from different places in the region, being more of a compilation of different examples than an actual village. However, this allows the museum to provide information on these different styles, such as designs to prevent snow buildup, or keep cool in summer. These buildings all require taking your shoes off, as is expected. A couple are indicated on the map as being extra notable, so make sure you visit these on your route. A few child friendly physical games are provided at the entrance, and there's toilets scattered throughout, with a rest area with drinks etc near the end. Check out all the fish on the pier too! There's a large souvenir shop at the bus stop outside, so don't worry about the lack of items inside the village. Make sure you keep an eye on bus routes, since the infrequent bus is one of the only ways to get to or from here!

Note: Wood fires may be used on cold days, so please be aware in case of breathing difficulties (eg. Asthmatic individuals may wish to bring an inhaler and wear a face mask). Went early in the morning when there was less people. A lot of areas are inaccessible for those with mobility difficulties (no wheelchair access abilities in **some** areas, upper levels of houses may be too steep for people with ailling joints). There is a small counter at the entrance where you can purchase a stamp book and collect 7 stamps for a gift prize (¥200 for stamp book needed to get souvenir gift). You can purchase food for the fish (¥200 baguette type bread that you break up to feed the fish). There are descriptions in English and Japanese as well as 'guide books' available (I did not personally purchase one). There are little activities like wood puzzles, spinning tops, stilts, water pistols, etc at the arbour. Artisans are still keeping traditional arts alive such as weaving, woodworking, lacquering, etc and you can purchase from their stores or you can make some crafts there (like painting a beckoning cat). There is also a rest area with vending machines (including hot drinks like coffee, matcha, tea and hot cocoa) that you can sit down and rest. There are toilets throughout with western style toilets (bidet included) and traditional Japanese style squat toilets. It feels very serene and the village is mostly quiet (with the exception of the gong that visitors can use to pray with). Please be mindful of the historical and cultural significance and do not wear shoes on the wooden areas inside the traditional houses- additionally there are bins at the rest area so please do not litter. The staff were very polite.

Wonderful museum with a lot to explore. The village contains a beautiful lake, trees with autumn leaves, small rice farms, and several torii gates and shrines (including one with beautiful ceiling paintings), which add to the scenic atmosphere. Similar to Shirakawago, there are a number of thatched houses in the gassho-zukuri style. I personally preferred this museum as there are much fewer tourists than Shirakawago (especially those in big tour groups) and it feels quainter and more serene. Apart from the beautiful scenery, the museum is also highly educational. There are exhibits about numerous aspects of village life in the past, ranging from architecture, to traditional industries (e.g. straw & silk weaving, wooden sleds used for transportation, farming tools), food (types of crops eaten, miso fermentation), children's toys, and even ceremonies such as wedding rituals. The information panels generally have high-quality English translations and offer very detailed insights into village life. It was clear that a lot of effort and heart went into collating the exhibits and documenting their history, ensuring that such knowledge is not lost amidst modern technological advancement. You can either walk to the museum from Takayama, or take the Sarubobo bus from Takayama Nohi bus centre (bus ride is less than 20 mins). As IC cards are not allowed on the Sarubobo bus, you can buy a ticket from the bus centre for 210 yen (one-way).

The museum is an exceptional representation of Gasshozukuri architecture. The village exudes a serene and picturesque ambiance during our morning visit. The tranquil atmosphere is further enhanced by the harmonious sounds of birdsong and the gentle movement of fish in the lake. This destination has been firmly added to my list of must-visit places.

Cool informative open air museum with a lot of interaction if desired. It’s very wheelchair friendly and has a very helpful and courteous staff. Definitely worth the visit and the low cost of entry. I would allocate roughly 2 hours to explore

Hida Kokubun-ji Temple is a small, historic Hindu temple located in Takayama. It features a row of diverse Buddha statues and an old ginkgo tree. The shrine is renowned for its architecture, including the bell tower and triple tower structure. Visitors can explore the administrative halls of Takayama Jinya and admire the vermillion Nakabashi Bridge nearby. The temple houses some of the oldest Buddha statues, each depicting its own fabled story.
Visited on October 26th, 2024 Beautiful shrine. The Ginko tree is amazing to see. It is free to enter.
Ananya T — Google review
Hida Kokubunji Temple is the oldest temple in Takayama, with a history dating back to 746 AD. Established under Emperor Shōmu's directive to build provincial temples across Japan, it has been a spiritual and cultural landmark for over 1,200 years. Key highlights include: Three-Story Pagoda: Standing at 22 meters, this pagoda is the only one of its kind in the Hida region. Originally a seven-story structure, it was rebuilt multiple times due to fires and now stands as a three-story pagoda constructed in 1820. Ancient Ginkgo Tree: In front of the Bell Tower Gate, a 28-meter-tall ginkgo tree, estimated to be over 1,250 years old, is believed to have been planted by a Buddhist monk. It's designated as a natural monument and is a popular photo spot, especially in autumn. Main Hall (Hondō): The current main hall, dating from the Muromachi period (1336–1573), is the oldest building in Takayama and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. The temple houses several significant artifacts, including statues of Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha) and Kannon Bosatsu (Goddess of Mercy) from the Heian period, as well as a tachi sword donated by the Ena clan.
Anna K — Google review
This is a national historical site. There is a huge ginko tree over 1200 years old and a ‘Triple Pagoda’ in the precincts, as well as Bell Tower Gates, said to have been moved from Takayama Castle and the cornerstone of the pagoda built over 1200 years ago. The main temple building is the oldest structure in the city, constructed in the Muromachi era (about 500 years ago). Popular place, regular stream of visitors. Easy terrain, lot of easy walking. Wear comfy shoes, take water, wear hat, sunscreen. Fee charged for entry. Great place for photography.
S V — Google review
The area is smaller than I expected. Though the three storey pagoda and the main hall depicts how ancient it is, it was not scary. I can breathe good air with the surrounding old townscape.

Flea & Street Markets
The Miyagawa Morning Markets in Takayama, Japan, are a vibrant and bustling food market located near the stunning turquoise Miyagawa River. This daily market offers a wide variety of fresh produce, flowers, and handmade souvenirs from local vendors. The markets are deeply rooted in Japanese history, dating back to the Edo period when farmers gathered to sell their goods directly to consumers.
We visited on a Sunday morning just before 8am. The market was just beginning to come alive, some stalls were still setting up, and many shops were not yet open. It's best to come a little later if you want to catch the market at its liveliest. There’s a charming variety of goods on offer, including local produce, pickles, handmade crafts, and dried food products. You’ll also find souvenirs such as wooden toys, local snacks, and seasonal fruits. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, with stallholders happy to chat and offer samples. It’s a nice way to start the day and take in the local culture along the riverside.
Melvin J — Google review
It’s been a wonderful experience to walk through this morning market, pacing slowly enough to enjoy the culture and people. The fruits are fresh. The local people are polite and friendly. I went very early in the morning at 7:00am therefore there aren’t too many people, making it an even better walk. I recommend going early and spend an hour to 90 minutes here. Then sit down at a coffee shop nearby for morning tea and wait for the other shops to open.
Kenneth C — Google review
The Miyagawa Morning Market is one of the most well-known morning markets in Japan and a popular stop for visitors to Takayama. It’s located along the scenic Miyagawa River, creating a pleasant atmosphere for a morning stroll. While the market is charming, it does feel more catered to tourists than locals, with many stalls selling souvenirs, snacks, and street food rather than everyday produce. The market street itself is relatively short, so you can easily walk through it in about 15–20 minutes. That said, it’s still worth a visit for the lively atmosphere, friendly vendors, and the chance to sample local specialties like Hida beef skewers, fresh fruit, and traditional sweets while enjoying views of the river.
Wesley W — Google review
I visited the Miyagawa Morning Market around 7 a.m., but most of the shops were still closed and many vendors were just setting up their stalls. I realized it’s probably better to come a bit later, so I went back again around 8 a.m. By that time, more shops were open and the market felt livelier. There were stalls selling food, plants, and various souvenirs. It’s not a very big market, but it has a nice and relaxed atmosphere. I think it’s a good place to walk around in the morning if you’re staying in Takayama and have some free time before noon. Coming a bit later than 7 a.m. would be better if you want to see more shops open.
C B — Google review
It’s an ok market, didn’t find it particularly interesting or appealing, but they sell some nice stuff along with the usual souvenirs for tourists. It’s strange because everything shuts downs at noon and the city becomes almost like a ghost town. Apparently some of the items the vendors are selling are made by the wives of local farmers, so look for handmade things and not souvenirs that seem to be made in a factory, that should help the local community better. Also, as tourists, it’s not always easy to buy fresh produces, as you’re probable going to be on a bus for a few hours with no way of preserving food, so I didn’t personally buy anything to eat here.
André M — Google review
Some stall are nice but things especially snacks are more pricey here. What I enjoyed most was the nice breezy walk and feeding the koi fishes in the stream below. You can purchase fish pellets from stalls. Love the beautiful scenery.
Ong Y — Google review
A cute market to wander around in the morning. There's a shop where you can engrave your name on chopsticks. The people at the stalls are cute and charming. There's a stall selling sesame snacks where the seller loves Israel, go and support him!
Noam I — Google review
Open only in the morning for a few hours as the name suggests. There’s a list of shops on the right but along the riverside there’s also some small stores selling farmers produce which is quite nice . We enjoyed hida beef and some local desserts

The shrine is renowned for its vibrant festivals, particularly the Hachiman Festival in autumn, featuring splendid yatai with colorful decorations that captivate onlookers.
This is an exceptionally-maintained shrine. It has a clean and well-kept outdoor area, a stall with goshuin, and two museums. The whole place has been designed for tourists. The restaurant offers additive-free, seafood-based broth that pairs perfectly with a soy-egg of soft-centered perfection. Customers praise the light and subtle flavors of the ramen, with options like Takayama ramen featuring thinner noodles and a stronger dashi flavor.
Went here with my Kouhai ( juniors at work) Cant say enough good words for their ramen. Its a Family-run business as it seems. The ramen is very flavorful, its like the noodles is cooked in beef broth. And the shoyu soup base is just as flavorful. The shop itself is also nice and clean. Definitely a must visit ramen shop here in Takayama.

Now we went here because of the good rating and it didn't disappoint. Just a bit far from where your tour bus might be parked but well worth it. 900 yen ramen. Affordable but definitely good flavor. Personally, had the basic ramen. Loved the chunk of meat. Flavorful, tender and soft.

The best Takayama ramen, without question. Don’t go to the other touristy places - this little ramen shop run by a very kind couple is miles better, and no queue since it’s not on the “main street”. Cannot recommend enough!

Best Takayama ramen, so simple and sol good especially the meat as well as the noodles and soup! 😍 We love it here and came back 2 years later, still amazing! We walked right in with no line and it is the sweetest couple that runs the restaurant. You sit on the floor and eat, but that is also a part of the traditional experience. Can only recommend! 🙌

Cozy ramen house at Takayama. The humble looking noodles took us by surprise, the noodles were springy and cooked perfectly, soup was flavourful and light, not cloying. Not the typical Ichiran ramen type. The char siu was so tender! We sat at the counter seats and watched the chef prepared the noodles. You can sense the dedication and precision in the way he worked. We regretted not going for the upsized noodles! Must try if you are at takayama! Highly recommended!

A small shop run by a old couple (I assume). Selling only one type of ramen and Char Siew rice. Hardly leave review but this char Siew rice is super nice !

I’m in love with the traditional tatami seating by the window, old school vibe with jazz in the background. A relaxing afternoon. Shoyu ramen was good. I prefer thin noodles. Chashu bowl was delicious too. Great price service and atmosphere. Kid-friendly! Would totally come back.

Nice bowls of ramen. Light and subtle flavors. Simple menu. We got both bowls—the Takayama ramen had thinner noodles and a broth with a stronger dashi flavor. Both had just the right amount of sodium! I can’t say which one I liked better, but slightly prefer the noodles in the Takayama; they were thinner, curly, and had a nice bite to it. Try both ramen with a little bit of white pepper, it really brings out the flavor. The pork in the Takayama and the chicken in the shoyu were both cooked perfectly. Tender, but not too meaty/gamey. Service was friendly and fast. The shop is off a main road and not too hard to find. We went at 11:15 right after they opened and there was no line.

Japanese restaurant
Tenaga Ashinaga is a casual kitchen known for its set menus featuring savory noodle soups topped with local Hida beef and pork. Customers praise the delicious food, particularly the Hida beef which is reasonably priced compared to other places in town. The owner is friendly and accommodating, creating a welcoming atmosphere. Despite the affordable prices, the quality of the food is excellent. The salted Hida beef ramen and Hida BBQ are highly recommended dishes.
Such a perfect place to get a try Hida Beef, the special local food in the Gifu prefecture! The beef tasted awesome and the seasoning was unique, the restaurant itself was comfortable and spacious. It seemed like they take reservations for big groups too. Loved that the staff was friendly! I personally would love to go back here again if I ever come back to Japan.

We were looking for an affordable place to try Hida beef and this restaurant more than met those expectations. Meat is incredibly high quality and you can grill it exactly how you like it. Served with himalaya salt, ponzu sauce and other toppings. Service is great, sometimes the fire under our grill went out, but you simply press the button and someone is with you within a minute. Recommended to reserve, but absolutely with visit here again!

We didn’t have a dinner reservation in Takamaya and this was the only place that seated us right away. The hosts were amazing and the food was sooo good. The ramen with a side of beef which was incredible was so cheap I couldn’t believe it. I thought something might be wrong with it but it was actually really good haha. The ramen itself wasn’t anything special but still great. The beef and rice were amazing and I wish I could have ordered a big bowl of just that. The Kobe beef was also delicious. If you are in the area definitely give this place a try.

My worse meal in 23 days in Japan. Not a good experience. Hot plate meal not recommended here- they make you cook the meat on paper! Not good! I ordered the hida beef loin on hot plate and it was a disaster. I'm giving it 2 stars because I believe the meat was fresh. The salad and Miso soup were also decent, but I didn't come here for that- I came for the meat! 1st negative- they require you cook the meat on parchment paper. WHY? You can't get a sear on it that way. It's like steaming it, verse hot plate cooking it. It also takes the veggies sooo long to cook this way. When I asked why, I was told because the meat would stick. Then I asked if all restaurants in Takayama make you cook on paper and she said NO, ONLY HERE! 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2nd negative the hot plate was brought hot but not lit, with no fire. When I asked, he said yes it's hot to cook. So as a 1st timer here, I started. 10 minutes later and the meat just turned gray-ish not brown. Knowing it should be done, I tried it and it was raw. Finally someone came over and said, "oh there's no fire" and lit the small burner. 🤦🏻‍♀️ So, I continued to then "cook" the meat, but as mentioned it was more steamed in texture and taste. Not pleasant to eat and took very long. Then half way through, the small fire went out and I had to call again for a new one. Negative 3- I ordered loin bescuse I prefer lean cuts, which in the picture also looks very lean, but was given pieces with lots of fat that were not loin. Negative 4- after I asked about the paper, I told the waitress I wasn't happy with the cooking, she shrugged and walked away. I still had most of my meat and veggies left. I wish she would have offered a different cooking method to fix the problem. Very disappointed, especially because they were not busy and could have made it better. I do NOT recommend this place for hot plate beef!

We were rather late looking for some decent restuarant after long day sightseeing. This one had a very good menu presented outside so we decided to give a try and got in line (with a ticket machine:) After 10min of waiting (few couples before us) we got inside and were quickly surprised by the way how it's arranged. Each table is located in a spearate box so you have a full privacy there. Ordering system is very clear and effectivie with a buzzer on your table to call service any time you need. Food was absolutely amazing and serviced with a speed of light. There was literally nothing to complain about including prices. Fully recommend this place.

Gery delicious hida beef.! Can provide group till 25 peoples.
Gilang M — Google review
The food is good and the beef is so tender. However, the restaurant was catering to 2 tour buses, which meat that they opened up later to everyone else. They didnt turn on the ticket system until 6:30. I sat in the waiting area from before 6pm and watch the queue build up. It is recommended you start queueing up in this situation.
Elle Y — Google review
Unfortunately I would not recommend this place if you have other choices around. While the restaurant was not very busy (about barely half full), you still needed to wait outside as the staff were too busy in the restaurant to serve you. It took about 10-15mins for them to come take our order and about another 30-40mins for the food to be served (we are just 2 people and did not order anything elaborate). While the food was okay, it was quite expensive for the amount in this area and the ramen was not great at all. The staff were still quite friendly but some do not know English so recommend using a translation app to make any communicating easier.

Yakiniku restaurant
Meat dish restaurant
Hidagyu Maruaki is a Yakiniku restaurant situated close to the Hida Takayama bus station. It specializes in offering a variety of cuts and styles of the renowned Takayama Hida beef. The restaurant is known for its affordable set meals, allowing patrons to savor different cuts of succulent grilled Hida beef with rice for around 28 USD.
We bought A5 Hida beef to cook at home, and our expectations were very high. The beef is incredibly tender, practically melts in your mouth, but I also found it quite rich due to the intense fatty flavor. Eating it with white rice helps balance it, but I wish I could have cooked it in a way that reduced the strong fat taste. That said, the value of the beef is impressive given its quality — in Europe, this would have cost hundreds of euros, and here we had a very good experience at a relatively low price.
Miguel A — Google review
We arrived slightly after 5pm and were seated within 5 minutes. The menu does not offer a wide variety of cuts, but we went for the A5 large plate. The meat was sliced thinner than expected, but it was still delicious especially the sirloin and the cubed steak. The price per gram here is more reasonable compared to many other Hida beef restaurants in the area as they raise their own cattle, which is a plus. We added on a sirloin plate, and again, the cut was thin. I skipped the premium sirloin thinking it looked too fatty based on the photo, but after trying premium sirloin at another place the next day, I realised that it could have been the better choice. Overall, a good place to enjoy Hida beef at relatively more affordable prices.

Came in around 6:30 on a Friday evening (post Autumn Matsuri) so it was fairly busy with about 28 groups in front of us. Wait was ~40 minutes, and were hungry but definitely worth the wait. Super fatty and melty meat, great way to experience A5 grade beef. For 2 people, a sampler platter, kimchi sampler, rice, and an extra entree of A5 short rib was plenty since the meat was so rich.

The best yakiniku restaurant in Takayama! We loved it so much that we went twice on two consecutive days during our stay that’s how worth it it was. The Hida beef was absolutely exceptional incredibly tender, juicy, and full of rich flavor that melts in your mouth. The price is very reasonable considering the top-quality meat and the overall dining experience. The staff were kind and welcoming, making every meal feel special. A must-visit spot in Takayama for anyone who loves authentic Japanese yakiniku and wants to taste the best of Hida beef.

One of the best hida beef in town. It's also a bucher shop where you can buy nice cuts to cook at home or choose to eat at the restaurant here. The price is reasonable comparing to the quality of the meat. Hida beef doesn't give off a strong beefy flavor but it's definitely melted in your mouth. I que up for about 30 mins but it's worth the wait. You have to come here if you're in Takayama.
Anchalee H — Google review
I ordered four dishes of Wagyu beef and received poor services. Among all upscale beef restaurants I have ever visited, this may be the worst. The waitress and waiters are very impolite and not helpful. Beef is not as good as photo as I found black spots ( I believe it is rotten). We asked for recommendations on sake but we did not take the recommended one. The waiter spoke in Japanese in front of us and complained to his lady colleague. This is very unacceptable

You can find High quality here. It’s so intense marbling, tender texture, rich and juicy flavor. The beef lover must visit! There are Pork and Bacon provided for whom not a beef fan!🥩 I can say it’s the most HAPPY meal for this trip!

Visited on a Saturday afternoon, wasn't too busy. Genuine 5 star place. The staff patience with my broken Japanese and my quirky order. We ordered iced pour over coffee with a splash of oat milk and the pumpkin cheesecake. The pour over coffee was very smooth and brewed perfectly with no acidic or bitter taste. The cheesecake was perfect- not too heavy, but balanced cheese and pumpkin tones without over powering each other. We even won a prize for solving the Sudoku and the staff commented how quickly. Lovely atmosphere to sit inside too. A definite recommendation 👌

A small but modern and cute café (for groups of 4 or less). We took the iced matcha with oat milk and a banana caramel pound cake. Everything was delicious. The sound resonates which probably explains the choice to have smaller groups. Staff is super polite and friendly.

Lovely cafe with a relaxing vibe. We came here for the affogato and it was phenomenal. The banana caramel cake was not too heavy nor too sweet. The staff were warm and friendly. U get a sudoku puzzle from the staff and if you solve it, they will give u a gift, which was a really nice gesture. Note that big groups of 5 or more are not allowed.

Takayama Jinya is a well-preserved historical government building from the time of the shogun, which served as a local government office until 1969. Visitors can explore the tatami rooms and learn about their original functions. The rice storage area features displays and information about local government operations during the Edo era.
Locals made morning market in front of Jinya every morning from 7-10 am. They sell fruit, vegetables, handcrafted souvenirs with reasonable prices. I bought key chains and other souvenirs from one of the craftsman there.

I enjoyed the experience and found the historical building really interesting—it gives you a great glimpse into Japan’s Edo-period government life. However, I do wish there had been more explanations in English. Most of the signs and information were in Japanese, so it was a bit hard to fully understand the context without a guide. Still, a beautiful place worth visiting if you appreciate history and architecture!
SJMG15 S — Google review
Takayama's Jinya is a very interesting example of civilian architecture before the Meiji Period. It offers valuable perspective against the long list of temples, shrines, and a dozen of casltes that survived to the modern day. The building is well kept, sports a sober but pretty garden, with some of the rooms filled with origian furniture. More importantly, it is the sole example of a government office from the Edo Period. Don't miss it when you are in Takayama
Emiel H — Google review
The exposition at Takayama Jinya was bigger than we expected and offered a really interesting glimpse into traditional Japanese interior and architecture. All visitors are asked to remove their shoes at the entrance, place them in a plastic bag, and carry them throughout the visit — something to keep in mind before entering. There’s no rush inside, and several peaceful spots let you sit on tatami mats and enjoy views of the surrounding nature. A calm and enriching experience overall.

The provincial governor dispatched by the Shogunate performed the official duties involved in ruling over Hida (e.g., the administration, policing and judicial functions). Takayama Jinya is the only such site of a provincial governor / magistrate’s office – of around 60 across Japan where the main building still remains today. Popular place with tourists and locals. Easy terrain, lot of easy walking. Wear comfy shoes, take water, mostly under cover. Great place for photography.

Hida Takayama Retro Museum is a nostalgic trip back in time, especially for those who have fond memories of old arcade games and home consoles. The museum offers an array of internationally recognizable items from the past, including toys, pachinko machines, posters, video games, and snacks. Visitors can try out various games and machines for free and even purchase Japanese school lunches. The museum provides a unique experience that allows visitors to relive their childhood fantasies and reminisce about the past.
A beautifully designed museum invites you to touch, play, and explore a myriad of interactive exhibits. It caters not only to children but also to adults. Here, you can try out traditional Japanese games, vintage computer games, and classic mobile phones, all of which transport you back to the essence of your own childhood.
Yasmin G — Google review
I was totally unaware that Hida-Takayama has not one but two retro museums, so when my husband and I visited here on our first day here, we thought we were done with looking back on the Showa era. However, it dawned on me on the next day that there was a more definitive collection of vintage memorabilia at the Takayama Showa Museum nearby. As it turned out, this one was more targeted to kids. We were wondering why most of the exhibits were arcade machines whether they were pinball, pachinko, or slots. Some were free, and others required ¥100 coins. They were quite popular among young parents with hyperactive children. There were also sections focused on action figures and tin toys as well as recreations of a grade school classroom, a clinic, and a barbershop. No surprise that there was a huge candy concession area selling Showa-era sweets. Admission was ¥700. For an extra cost, there was a school lunch option if you want to eat like a student back then, but truthfully nothing sounded all that appetizing. If I had to choose between the two museums, I'd go to the other one since it provides a more comprehensive look at that period. However, if playing nostalgic, interactive games excites you, then this may be more your cup of tea.
Ed U — Google review
The museum contains a charming collection of retro games, toys, and posters. The lady staff at the counter today was very friendly, welcoming and helpful. While the museum as a whole is not particularly large, there are a lot of items on display inside and it took me some time to explore. It was clear that a lot of heart went into the museum's design, as the exhibits are arranged thoughtfully and each section has a cohesive theme. Although the focus is mainly on games and toys, there are some sections dedicated to other exhibits (e.g. hair salon, doctor's clinic, classroom, cafe). I found the old medicine pouches on display in the doctor's clinic, as well as the retro food packaging (e.g. milk cartons, juice bottles, ice cream) to be particularly interesting. Playing with the retro game machines was also very fun (e.g. pinball, pachinko, slots, arcade games), especially since they are all very colourful and have interesting designs, including a Gundam-themed machine. You can also purchase retro-style snacks and sweets near the entrance.

We went today and were so surprised to find this little gem. It’s so well laid out. Lots to see and to do. We came with a child and she was so engaged with all of the figures. We spent a long time in the restaurant and it wasn’t over crowded or too packed as people shared and moved from game to game. We also went to the Showa Museum with the combined ticket which was good value and also fun too. Super nostalgic. Very very sweet and it was so so lovely. Great fun!

The Hidatakayama Town Museum in Takayama, Japan, is a serene cultural institution that offers a glimpse into the local history and traditions. The museum features exhibits on the Yoshijima family's sake brewing legacy, including a large cedar ball hanging over the entrance. Visitors can explore traditional houses and artifacts showcasing the town's founding and its arts, crafts, and culture.

Nice museum to visit to learn about history of Takayama. It was especially meaningful since we just visited the Shiroyama Park where the castle ruins is located. At least we got to see how the castle looked like in the old days. No photography allowed in most exhibition rooms. Overall, still a nice time spent there.
Snoop E — Google review
This museum is entirely free, and somewhat hidden away. Upon entering, collecting a free map will guide you around the ~10 exhibition rooms and few small gardens. There's lots of well written information about the town's history and traditions, most of it in English. When we visited there did not seem to be any staff around, despite the clearly well maintained grounds. Regardless of your interest in the local history, there's enough peaceful places to rest quietly to make this worth a visit.

It was really interesting to learn something about the history of takayama. The museum is for free but you can not take many pictures there. You can learn about their festivals and their past. You can even fly in an interactive simulation above the destroyed takayama castle and can see what it once looked like. If you like history, that is the place to go. But it is not an must see in takayama.

Free admission for visitors. There were around 20 display rooms which provided information related to culture, economic, social live, festivals and past stories of Takayama. No picture allowed inside display rooms so I only took photo of the garden. After saw those display I interested to find more about Japanese swords, which they provided it on specific free leaflet (can be requested to museum staff)
Agtifa P — Google review
Laid back and easy to navigate with very few people. Everything is at your own pace just like the whole of Takayama. There were quite a number of exhibitions though lack of English explanation so we just marvelled at the swords and antique pieces without much knowledge of it. The back garden is very pretty and quiet.

We enjoyed the museum, with a few different exhibitions and it was free! However, one of the volunteers kept approaching us and talking at us after we said we would to just go around on our own. This made us feel quite uncomfortable so we left earlier than we would have liked, I hope the museum can see this feedback.

Sanmachi Suji, also known as the Old Town, is a captivating district in Takayama that showcases the charm of Edo-period streets. Lined with well-preserved merchant houses, sake breweries, and traditional shops, this area offers a glimpse into Japanese culture and lifestyle. The architecture reflects a blend of Edo, Meiji, and Taisho styles with latticed windows and wooden balconies.
Sanmachi Suji in Takayama is a beautifully preserved slice of Edo‑period Japan—often called “Little Kyoto”—featuring three charming streets (Kamiichino‑machi, Kaminino‑machi, Kamisanno‑machi) lined with traditional wooden buildings, latticed windows, grey stone walls, sake breweries, museums, shops, cafés, and street-food stalls . Visitors love wandering early in the morning to enjoy the serene architecture and peaceful storefronts before the crowds arrive . The area offers must‑try local delights—Hida beef sushi, grilled skewers, miso soup, fresh fruit juices—and sake tastings at historic breweries marked by cedar balls above their doors . Highlights also include the Yoshijima Heritage House, Takayama Jinya museum, and optional rickshaw rides that add charm to your stroll . On the flip side, some find it touristy and crowded, especially midday; the quieter side streets and early visits help avoid that . Still, the authentic atmosphere, rich heritage, and engaging local flavors make Sanmachi Suji a must‑see for history buffs, food lovers, and anyone seeking that timeless Japanese small‑town vibe. Quick Tips: • Visit around 9–10 AM or late afternoon for best light and fewer crowds . • Budget 1–2 hours to explore, pop into cafés, shop for souvenirs, or enjoy a sake tasting. • Don’t miss nearby museums (Yoshijima House, Takayama Jinya) and optional activities like yukata rentals or rickshaws. Overall Rating: 9/10 – A perfectly preserved, atmospheric historic district offering an immersive cultural and culinary experience, with only minor queueing during peak times. Sanmachi Suji @ Takayama 🇯🇵 – Golden Yatai, Sake & Festival Charm 🎏🍶🛍️ We visited Sanmachi Suji on 15 April during the Takayama Spring Festival, and it was an incredible experience. The historic alley was full of life, with yatai (festival floats) on display—the golden yatai was absolutely amazing, shining with intricate craftsmanship and traditional elegance. The street was lined with traditional costume shops, paper umbrellas (和傘), local crafts, and souvenirs—perfect for festival-goers. We also enjoyed sake tasting at one of the local breweries, adding a rich cultural flavor to our walk. With the backdrop of cherry blossoms and Edo-style buildings, it was a perfect blend of heritage and celebration. A must-visit during the spring festival! 🌸🍶✨

Visited on a Sunday evening and it was still quite crowded, but the atmosphere was lively and full of character. The old wooden buildings, traditional shops, and narrow streets made it feel like stepping back in time. Lots of little stores selling local crafts, snacks, and sake. Despite the crowd, it was still enjoyable to walk around and take in the historic charm of the area. Worth a visit if you're in Takayama.

Sanmachi Suji in Takayama on a rainy day, and it was absolutely beautiful in its own quiet way. The old wooden houses glistened under the raindrops, and the reflections on the wet stone streets made the whole town feel timeless. The rain added a calm and romantic charm — fewer tourists, soft sounds of rain, and the smell of fresh wood and coffee from nearby cafés. Walking through those narrow lanes with an umbrella felt like stepping back in time. If you ever visit Takayama, don’t skip Sanmachi Suji, even if it’s raining. In fact, that’s when it feels the most magical.

Sanmachi Suji in Takayama swept us into a living memory — a street where spring, tradition, and joy collide. During Sanno Matsuri, the charming wooden houses opened their hearts — and sometimes their doors — offering travelers & tourists a taste of local sake and hospitality. The streets overflowed with energy as twelve yatai (festival floats), adorned with intricate details and adorable dolls, paraded through the crowds in synchronized celebration. It was crowded, yes — but in the best kind of way. The kind of atmosphere that makes you feel part of something old, grand, and beautifully alive. A walk through Sanmachi Suji during spring isn’t just a visit. It’s a traditional festival of the senses before leaving to Shirakawa-go two days later.

Early in the morning when no one is around I felt like I have traveled back in time. In the afternoon when it’s crowded with tourists I felt claustrophobic. The street is narrow and the houses are small. After 5 pm almost all shops are closed. There are no street lights and it’s very dark.

Dessert restaurant
Takayama Pudding Tei is a must-visit spot for dessert lovers in Takayama. This local favorite offers a variety of Japanese puddings, including the classic custard-based pudding and unique flavors like matcha and snow pudding. The desserts are known for their beautiful texture and balanced sweetness, making them a hit among locals and tourists alike. Despite its popularity, the long queues move quickly, ensuring that the wait is worth it.
Very well executed desserts. We got the original pudding and soft serve. The soft serve was had a coffee like after taste. Almost a combo between soft serve and gelato given how much more creamy it was. The pudding the star of the place, super creamy and rich. There’s no gelatinous texture to it all and taste super milky.
Ray K — Google review
Takayama Pudding Tei is a charming little spot that I recently had the pleasure of visiting. What stood out to me was the incredible smoothness and rich flavor of their puddings. The original flavor is simply divine — not too sweet, with a perfect creamy texture that melts in your mouth. I also tried their Snow Country pudding, which was a delightful variation. The flavor had a unique, refreshing quality that paired beautifully with the creamy base. The service was quick and friendly, making it a relaxing stop in between exploring the city. If you're in Takayama and have a craving for something sweet, I highly recommend this place.

Saw a line when going to the old street. Brought it close to closing timing so only takeout allow. Brought the original flavour and my friend brought the ramune flavor. Both were very good, can taste the richness of the milk in the pudding. Highly recommended!
Vieon W — Google review
The pudding is excellent. I eat the plain one and it has good combination of creaminess and sweetness along with hint of bitterness of the caramel. The line was not too long and there are explanations in english as well. Credit card can be used for payment. 20/4/25

We tried the "snow white" custard, pistachio, and coffee jelly, and they were all great! Even though the shop is small, there's a cosy seating area.
YJ K — Google review
Decent pudding. I visited twice during my stay in Takayama, both times around 4 PM with no line. Unfortunately, the young staff member without glasses was consistently unwelcoming. She took my order both times, and each time she turned her back to me mid-order without a word. Her expression was also cold and impatient, almost as if she was glaring at the customers. Disappointing service that leaves a bad taste.
SN — Google review
Had the matcha and seasonal pistachio flavors. Pistachio was incredibly strong and smooth, while matcha one was intense too but slightly more grainy due to the matcha powder. But matcha one had some red beans thrown in at the bottom, which underplayed smoothness and made the slight powderiness a sensible texture overall. The original flavor and the snowy version are both plain, but with different types of egg yolks. For people who like their pudding plain, you can try both out for comparison.
Shih C — Google review
Wow the pudding is so smooth. It’s so soft - i like this one more than the pudding shop in shirakawa. I tried the navy blue one which is milk flavour - Highly recommend.

The restaurant Nakagawa serves French-Japanese fusion cuisine that is both delicious and visually stunning. The owner has a good palate for good culinary, as is evidenced by the excellent wine list. The setting is a beautifully renovated traditional Takayama house.
We were seated at the counter and enjoyed every moment watching the chef do his magic. The Hida beef is famous in this region and we ordered the chateaubriand cut. It was expensive but the beef was heavenly. The thickness of the meat is a challenge to cook but it was marvellous.

What a gem of a find! We had enjoyed many days of Japanese cuisine but decided to switch it up this evening. This place was amazing! There is an English menu — though the food exceeded our expectations given the menu has limited description of each dish. It is evident that they pay significant attention to detail with each dish. The food was absolutely delicious. We were the only tourists in here and the staff was welcoming and friendly! Would definitely recommend.

Delicious French-style food using local ingredients. Subtle flavours and excellent service. We had the beef and fish of the day, with apple pie for dessert. Definitely recommended.

Delicious food. The English menu was unfortunately little informativ. The food and the arrangement was way better than we expected after reading the menu. So trust in the food pictures on google. Food arrangement was beautiful and with lots of love for detail!

This restaurant offers both tasting menu and a la carte menu. But the tasting menu has to be booked one day in advance. I ordered from a la carte menu and the fish was surprisingly tasty. Chef seasoned the plate very nicely. The dishes were aromatic from the variety of ingredients. Love it!

Went for dinner @ Nakagawa with my wife. We ordered the Hida Wagyu Fillet dinner set & added on the vegetable soup of the day. Everything is delicious! The steak was the right temperature to our liking 👍 We both enjoyed the dinner very much. The best meal we had in Takayama during our 2 nights stay! Will visit again if we come to Takayama in future.

Absolutely amazing experience. We booked dinner course for two, the chef was kind enough to adjust my menu as I only eat fish. Micheline star restaurant quality food. Amazing combination of Japanese and western cuisine. But without stress and discomfort of overly fancy restaurant. Staff was very sweet and food was absolutely breathtaking.

Market
The Jinya-mae Morning Markets are a charming and popular attraction in Takayama, Japan. Held daily from around 7 a.m., these small outdoor marketplaces offer a delightful array of local produce, flowers, wood-carved souvenirs, and regional specialties. Located near the historic Takayama Old Town and along the picturesque Miyagawa River, visitors can explore stands offering everything from vegetables and pickles to baked goods and artisanal coffee.
Small morning market, selling mostly local fresh produce.
Lip L — Google review
We visited on a Friday morning and there were only a few stalls. We bought a bottled apple juice and a box of blueberries. There was also a random grape plant by the side, full of green grapes still on the vine, which was quite fun to see. It is nice to check it out if you are nearby, but probably not worth coming all the way just for this.
Leh P — Google review
Was not as robust as we had hoped. We went in August and it was very hot most days. The morning was cooler, but we wonder if the market is busier other times during the year. Sadly it did not provide as many options as we’d hoped it would. We did think that it was beautiful walking next to the river. Great location.

Steak house
Kitchen Hida is a retro-style grill restaurant in Takayama, specializing in serving Japanese Hida beef steaks. Established in 1964, the restaurant offers a laid-back atmosphere and spacious seating for both small and large groups. The signature dishes include sirloin and ribeye steaks that bring out the rich umami flavor and melt-in-your-mouth texture unique to Hida beef. Customers can enjoy attentive service from friendly staff who speak excellent English.
Great steakhouse in the middle of Takayama. We tried the Hida beef steak with their original dressing and it was tasty. Even if it is not a traditional dish, try also the Beef Stroganoff, it is delicious. The staff was also cordial. Prices are quite high but reasonable compared to the beef quality.
Ernesto B — Google review
We had a salad, a small sirloin steak, bread, rice and a chocolate cake and ice cream. Everything was delicious apart from the chocolate cake which was very dense but not bad. The restaurant was very quiet, not much atmosphere (normal for lunchtime?). Everything feels very dated. I imagine if this restaurant was updated it would be booked up for months in advance considering the food and service.
Phileon1 — Google review
This is probably THE steakhouse in the Takayama, serving good quality Hida beef. Reservations is easy and highly recommended. The place was booked out when we visited. You'd get to choose between A4 and A5 beef cuts, but obviously the price of the meal will be costlier as a result compared to other steakhouses in the area. An interesting fact is they are also well known for their side dish souvenir "Hambaguu", probably a word play on the Hamburg steak, which is one of their specialty goods and very popular among the Japanese (to the point where apparently they have customers visiting the place just to buy those bottled side dish). It's purchasable when you pay for your meal at the counter.

this place does a great job keeping things simple and attention focused on the prime draw, the hida beef, which was delicious and has a texture quite different from the kobe (association marketed) variety
Dee Z — Google review
Steak is just amazing, and the staff is really friendly which makes it a very pleasant experience. Do yourself a favour and try the bread - with the butter, it is insanely good.
T Y — Google review
Best steaks we’ve ever had. Some say it’s expensive but this has to be because of how the beef is raised to make it this amazing. We’ve had the sirloin, the tenderloin and the chateau. Make a reservation through google and the restaurant will email or call you to confirm. Service was also phenomenal. We heard rumors about the Hida beef being the best in the world and to us it was the best we’ve ever had. It’s worth every penny. Go for the higher grade-you’ll be glad you did and you’ll have something to talk about and tell your friends after flying back home from vacay. You’ll choose your cut and they’ll bring it to you to see before it’s prepared. Thank you Kitchen Hida. We will miss you and your amazing beef, chef and staff 🍽️🥩

Kamikōchi is a picturesque alpine valley located in the Japanese Alps, known for its forested national park and hiking trails. The area is famous for its stunning views and offers lodging options for visitors. Nearby attractions include the World Heritage-listed villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama, as well as historic destinations like Matsumoto Castle and post towns of the Nakasendo.
We visited Kamikōchi and everything was simply breathtaking. The entire process was smooth and effortless — we arrived by car, were quickly guided to the parking area, and from there took the bus into the nature reserve. Everything was organized with the kind of speed and efficiency that only Japan delivers. The scenery itself was stunning, and we enjoyed every moment of our visit. Highly recommended — both for nature lovers and even for those who aren’t usually into hiking or the outdoors.

Kamikochi is absolutely beautiful even in summer! The atmosphere feels so natural and peaceful, fresh air, the sound of the river, and stunning mountain views make it the perfect place to relax. It’s great for a picnic, a healing trip with family, friends, or your partner. I’d love to visit Kamikochi in every season because it’s truly worth seeing more than once. Don’t forget to get some cute Kappa souvenirs too!

Truly the the nature and the atmosphere is so beautiful. The autumn colours are just started so you will find leaves in all the colours. It was pretty cold in the early morning (till 11:00). The food is pretty good and I really enjoyed the curry bun. They have facilities in the main attractions. You don’t find any garbage bins even at the shops so it’s better to carry a cover with you.

Very beautiful place. I didn't manage to catch the peak of the autumn foliage in early October but there was some parts that turned colour and the blend of colours was beautiful too. Cool weather was nice for a hike. Many monkeys around who were absolutely not afraid of humans, just living their lives as if we are invisible, quite a fun sight to see.
Si F — Google review
The best trekking experience I’ve ever took. Bought 100 JPY map at tourist information center and walk to the pond, since the staff recommended this route. I saw a wild monkey walking calmly in the route. Fresh air, beautiful sky and all those greeneries were very relaxing. Definitely will going back here someday
Agtifa P — Google review
Beautiful and relatively easy and flat nature walk with mountains and river flowing through. You may book a fuss free hiking day tour via klook as the place is only opened to tour buses or highland buses and private cars. Wear comfortable walking shoes – paths are mostly flat but can be slightly uneven or damp at times. Bring a light jacket, especially in cooler seasons as the forest area can feel chilly. Keep snacks or a small bottle of water with you. Best to have an early breakfast before you embark on the trip or bring some food along. Toilets are mainly at the carparking and Tourist Information Center and at the end of the designated routes.
Siew T — Google review
We took the Alpico direct bus at 5:30 am and by the time we arrived was super cold but still we enjoyed and got the chance to take nice pictures without the crowds. We started in Tashiro Pond and finished by 12:30 pm. Make sure you wear proper hiking shoes and warm clothes, it’s super cold! 🥶

Ranch
Okuhida Bear Park is a zoo featuring dozens of black bears from Asia. Visitors can throw food to the bears and take photos with them, or simply enjoy their company. The park is good for those who love Japanese black bears, as only these animals are present.
Houses several blocks of bears and could pay 1000 yen for taking a photo with cubs, suitable for children and adults alike
Mich L — Google review
Okuhida Bear's Ranch offers a chance to see a variety of bears in a well-maintained, clean facility. However, it’s a relatively small attraction that can easily be explored in under an hour. The Bears and the Experience The ranch features many bears, and while they’re impressive to see up close, the experience left something to be desired. The opportunity to take a picture with a "baby bear" was underwhelming—the bears were not small as advertised, and they seemed aggressive. Additionally, you’re only allowed to hand over your phone for the staff to take photos, which felt impersonal and overpriced for the experience. Worth the Visit? Unless you’re staying nearby, the ranch may not be worth going out of your way for. While the facility is clean and the bears are interesting, the overall experience doesn’t justify a long trip. Final Thoughts Okuhida Bear's Ranch is a quick, simple stop if you’re already in the area, but it falls short as a standalone destination. If you’re considering the photo experience with the bears, it might be better to skip it.

🚪 Entrance: ¥1100 (there is also promotion where we followed Instagram for 10% off and get a free box of biscuits to feed the bears with) 🖼 : There is also extra photography service where you can take a photo with a bear cub (max 8 ppl in photo) for ¥1000 🐻: It is a good opportunity to see real Japanese Black Bears up close, especially for kids. But I must agree that it is a little sad to see them in captivity and kept in such a state (concrete and water but no greens for them) 🤳: Since it is very close up, you can take really great photos of them. 🍯: You can get bear biscuits or dried fruits to feed them. Also sad to see them just sleep and beg for food though (and they REALLY beg 🥺) Overall, I'd like to mention that it is still a good experience to see them up close, but if you do not like or cannot bear to see such settings, please do avoid. Note: I do not know if the bears get rotated and get to experience time out of their cages, but I really hope so... it looks very sad as is. Visited: 09/11/2024 (10-11 am)

The Bear Ranch is a wildlife sanctuary, which cares for bears. It is not a zoo. We bought many packets of food to feed all our furry friends. The bears beckon you to give them a snack and are very good at catching the snacks in the air! I wanted to feed them all...so I did. I was too busy talking to the bears and feeding them snacks so did not take many pictures 💕🐻

Do not come here! Animal cruelty! The most confronting animal conditions, bears begging for food and kept in tiny & crowded concrete cells with no shelter or toys or greenery. Some kept in cages beneath. I only came here as I assumed it would be free range in nature due to the word “ranch” so I assumed it was a sanctuary but it is quite the opposite. Wish I looked at reviews prior as i would have never funded this place. Disappointing a place like this is allowed to remain open, this would not be legal in my country.
Nina M — Google review
It's not a ranch it's a cement city. They're enclosures are made of cement and little shade is provided during the summer months. They were also kept unclean and smelled of feaces which you could see all around them including their own coats. It was sad to see. Some bears were kept in smaller enclosures that are fully facing the sun. They seemed more like torture boxes. I was very disappointed and felt bad for having paid to see them like this. We stayed 10 minutes and left. I should have done more research of this place before going.
DBNB — Google review
It's fun to see especially with kids, fun to give food to the bears and you can also line up and take picture with a baby bear (1000¥). However it feels very sad for the bears, there is absolutely no trees or green, they are just inside a bloc of grey concrete.
Guillaume — Google review
Absolutely vile conditions for the poor bears, just concrete cells with no greenery or shelter. The park is surrounded by the most beautiful landscape, then the bears have a 5m x 5m concrete box. If you go here and support them, you’re genuinely a bad person.

Hirayu Waterfall

(797)
Hirayu Waterfall, located in the picturesque Hida region, is a majestic natural wonder that offers breathtaking views throughout the year. This towering waterfall is renowned for its abundant water flow and thunderous sound, creating a mesmerizing atmosphere surrounded by negative ions and mist. The rock surface adorned with clear water and moss provides a soothing experience for visitors.
You can see the falls almost immediately from the Parking lot 2, but it's only a 10 minute walk on a stone path to the base of the falls. Gorgeous view with very little effort!
Natalie J — Google review
Hirayu Waterfall (Hirayu Ōtaki) is one of the most impressive waterfalls. With a height of 64 meters and a width of 6 meters, it ranks among the highest waterfalls in the country and is listed as one of Japan’s “Top 100 Waterfalls” by the Ministry of the Environment. According to a 450-year-old tale, a white monkey was seen emerging from behind the falls. Soldiers followed it and discovered the healing hot springs of Hirayu Onsen, which helped restore their strength after battle. The waterfall is easily accessible from the Hirayu Onsen bus stop. It takes 10-minute walk from the parking (in front of the restaurant). In mid-April 2025, the waterfall did not appear particularly impressive. Due to lingering snow, it was not possible to approach it closely.

We came here because our plans changed at the last minute and we're so glad we did! There was almost no one else around and the scene was beautiful. The water volume was probably at it's lowest (as it's fall) but the fall was still spectacular. The colors of the trees were also incredible. There's two parking lots close by that are very convenient. Very nice, highly recommend.

Nice and relatively easy 30 min hike from Hirayu Onsen Bus Terminal to the Waterfall. Best to go before 10:30 am as the sun behind the Waterfall will be very glaring if you want to have a nice photo shoot of the Waterfall. After 11:30 am should be better or later part of the day.

Honokidaira is a ski destination located near Okuhida, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountain ranges. With slopes catering to all skill levels and three ski lifts at different altitudes, it's perfect for both beginners and advanced skiers or snowboarders. The resort also features snow-tubing for non-skiers, providing a bird's eye view of the entire area. Visitors can enjoy free parking and access to various shops for equipment rental.
Honokidaira Ski Resort offers an amazing and stress-free skiing experience, even during the busy New Year’s break. We visited on two separate days and were pleasantly surprised by how uncrowded it was—perfect for those who prefer a more relaxed ski experience. Skiing and Rentals The rental and lift ticket package was reasonably priced at 10,300 yen. There were plenty of rental shops, so finding gear was easy. The resort has gondolas, with the most time spent on the middle one and the one at the top of the mountain. The top gondola had no wait, which made it especially convenient. The other gondolas near the greens were busier due to many kids learning to ski, so it’s best to be cautious in those areas. Food and Dining The resort’s restaurants served hearty meals with generous portions—perfect for refueling after a day on the slopes. The food was satisfying and comforting, ideal for the chilly weather and energy needed for skiing.

Decent ski resort, not too crowded when we came to visit on Dec 19 and 20, 2024. Love it because it's nice for beginners 😍

Three chair lifts and a mix of different slopes from beginner to easy off piste. You can rent ski clothes, skis etc. Around 10,000 yen for ski pass and ski gear (clothes skis helmets etc)

3 jan, 2025 second visit here for one day. the access was ok, but after some point of a small bridge, we had much more snow on the road. finally, we had a lot of snow on the last bridge before here. it was ok with studdless tires of FF odyssey. we had a great time here to ski here on a fantastic snow condition slope. maximum waiting time ; 3 minutes to wait for the lifts when we lined up a queue. totally, it was excellent. ................................................................................ 2 jan, 2023 first visit here and skied for about two days. the clerk at the lift ticket booth told me it was quite busy when i arrived, but it was not busy on new year days. in fact, I'm get used to MEIHO, Winghills, and Takasu, so i was happy enough to ski far more than expected with my family. i liked it cz there are more skiers than snowboarders here. if you have a chance to visit Honokidaira, you should come here for better snow.
Masahiko M — Google review
A 40 min drive from takayama to Honokidaira skii slopes. Has range of slopes from gentler slopes for beginners to steep ones for advanced skiiers/snow boarders. Beginner slope and skii lift area was steeper than expected.. hard to manoeuvre for first timers in my opinion. The intermediate skii slope at the far end actually had much better quality snow and much wider area to skii. Rental stores are run by different providers in separate buildings. Rental of skii equipment and clothings was easy and seamless. Prices are very reasonable. Would definitely come back to Honokidaira if in staying in Takayama!

Beautiful ski resort near Okuhida that boasts a fantastic view of the nearby mountain ranges. There are multiple slopes for varying difficulties and 3 ski lifts catering to separstr altitudes. Non-skiers can also try out the snow-tubing, which also pays for a ride up and down the ski lift (gives a bird's eye view of the whole resort). Parking is free, and there are multiple shops in the vicinity offering skiing, snowboarding equipment rental. Do remember to wear sunglasses, as the snow can get blinding after a while!
Allonsy T — Google review
We went on a Monday and Tuesday, excellent weather and powdery snow. Low traffic on the slopes and many levels can choose from. Easy transportation from Takayama, only 45 mins by bus every hour. Rental and lifts tickets are very reasonable.

Nice ski resort! Not crowded at all! The ski instructor could speak English well and was very patient. A great ski place for beginners and intermediate skiers! 👍

Nestled at an impressive altitude of 900 meters, the Hida Great Limestone Cave stands as Japan's highest limestone cave, boasting a fascinating history that spans an astonishing 250 million years. This remarkable natural wonder features three distinct areas filled with unique rock formations, including the rare helictites—curved bellstones that add to its allure.
Very cool series of caves! Quite a distance, bring decent walking shoes! There’s even a section where there’s local sake and wine chilling in a storeroom!
Karen S — Google review
It was a nice visit even with the colder temperatures! The trip through the caves took us about half an hour. It's organized really well and the path through the caves was easy to follow. Some restaurants are also outside. If you find yourself in the area I would say it's worth the visit. We went on a weekend around 1530 and it wasn't busy at all.
Vinny F — Google review
Interesting place to visit if you haven't seen a limestone cave. Just take a bus from Takayama and back. There is a free shuttle bus that brings you from the bus stop to the cave entrance as well. 1hr to 1hr 15mins time spent at the cave is sufficient. Quite an easy walk inside but there are short steep paths and some steps. Not suitable for wheelchair users or baby strollers.
Terence O — Google review
Why can't one let nature be nature? You are cooped through the narrow tunnels, that you should not touch (which I of course understand) but everything is cemented, covered with tarps, some metal construction built into the cave etc. the only nice thing are the stalagmites that are formed naturally, other than that you may watch artifical waterfalls (they literally have water lines inside) and man made builds. Other than that in their first fish pond almost every fish looks blind and sick, even having bleeding gills. Miserable place, wanted to leave asap.

Lovely caves with lots of caves to explore. Bit of scaffolding here and there but we enjoyed it and great to explore somewhere new on our way to Takayama. Cat parking is free and entry was 1200 yen each.
Olivia L — Google review
The Hida Great Limestone Cave, located near Takayama, is a well-known local attraction, but in my experience, it doesn’t quite live up to its grand name. Compared to other limestone caves I’ve visited—such as the magnificent ones in Halong Bay, Vietnam—this cave is relatively small and less impressive in scale. The interior mainly consists of a long, narrow corridor with low ceilings in some parts. It’s quite damp and chilly inside, even though I visited during the summer. The atmosphere can feel a bit uncomfortable due to the constant moisture, and the lighting is rather dim, which adds to the cold and slippery feel of the place. Visitors should also be prepared for a physically demanding walk. There are many steep slopes and stairways throughout the cave, which can be tiring and potentially unsafe for young children, the elderly, or anyone with mobility issues. The wet surfaces make it even more slippery, so proper footwear is highly recommended. Overall, while the Hida Great Limestone Cave may be worth a quick visit if you’re already in the area and interested in geology, it’s not a must-see attraction. Those who have explored larger or more dramatic caves elsewhere might find it underwhelming.
Wesley W — Google review
It's really worth divert and come here to visit the cave. It's a long undeground walk though different caves connected by the tunnels. Nature is breatifuly exposed with the help of colorful lights. Some passgaes requires a bit of a stretch and climbing up the stairs. Parking is for free and beatifully located among the mountains. There is also an amazing small park with sculptures on th way back from the cave to the parking.
Piotr K — Google review
We loved it, definitely worth the stop. You get to explore three caves at different levels. It's well organised and the walking path is very clear. Outside, there's a pond with carps, and you can buy fish food nearby to feed them. Our 4 years old really enjoyed the experience.

The Takayama Matsuri Yatai Kaikan is a popular exhibition hall that showcases traditional hand-carved floats used in the biannual Takayama Matsuri festival. The Yoshijima family's history, dating back to 1784, is intertwined with sake brewing and can be explored at the exhibition.
Takayama Matsuri Yatai Kaikan is a museum dedicated to the spectacular festival floats (yatai) that play a key role in the famous Takayama Festival, held twice a year – in spring (April 14–15) and autumn (October 9–10). The museum is located on the grounds of Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine. The exhibition includes: Festival floats (yatai): The museum displays four of the eleven elaborately decorated floats used during the autumn festival. The exhibits are rotated three times a year (in March, July, and November), allowing visitors to view different floats up close even outside the festival season. Sakurayama Nikkokan: Adjacent to the main exhibition hall is a display featuring a detailed 1:10 scale model of the famous Toshogu Shrine in Nikko. This model, crafted by 33 artisans during the Taisho era, is an impressive example of traditional Japanese woodworking craftsmanship. Admission fee: Adults: ¥1,000 (includes an audio guide, also available in English).

It is a museum and exhibition hall devoted to the lovely floats of the Takayama Festival. Festival is held annually in April and October. The streets fill with tens of thousands of locals and visitors enjoying food from stalls and refreshments. Popular place, have to buy tickets. Easy terrain, easy walking around museum. Wear comfy shoes, take water, wear hat, sunscreen. Great place for photography.
S V — Google review
We missed the festival by a few days (it’s on the 9th and 10th October), so we got to see some of the floats (4) at the museum. Your visit will be rather quick because there’s not much to see, but you can learn a bit about the history behind the festival and the floats through the audioguides (available in english) and if you come with a guide, as it was our case. The video they show on the second floor is ok but rather dated, and the TV is quite small.

The Takayama Matsuri Yatai Kaikan is a museum in Takayama, Japan. It showcases the beautiful festival floats used in the famous Takayama Festival. These floats are large, colorful, and very detailed, highlighting the amazing craftsmanship of traditional artisans. The museum also features video introductions and explanations, making it easier to understand the history and significance of the floats. English audio guides are available as well. It’s a great place to visit if you want to learn about traditional Japanese culture and festivals.
WS — Google review
The floats are very impressive and interesting, but there are only 5 of them. And there isn't very much information written in the museum, it's all on the audio guide. So if you're not a fan of audio guides, like me, you're basically out of luck. It's quite a small museum so the 1000 yen price seems a bit steep.
M. V — Google review
One of the few places where one can truly understand the exhibits as the ticket comes with use of audio commentary kit in English and a few other languages. Amazing to see the spring and autumn floats on display and understand more of the cultural, religious practices. Ticket includes entrance to adjacent museum displaying a 1/10 model of Tokugawa mausoleum.

One of the coolest small museums I’ve visited. Amazing collection of matsuri yatai that must be seen to be believed. Gives great cultural context and history. A must visit in Takayama.
Andrew P — Google review
I visited the museum with floats (Yatai) that are listed as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage. The museum is located inside Hachiman-gu Sakurayama Shrine. The star attractions? Stunning floats that are true masterpieces, adorned with lacquer, vibrant paintwork, exquisite woodwork, intricate metalwork, and impressive smithery. The size of these floats is astounding! Imagine the Daihachi-Tai with wheels over 1.56 meters and the Hou-ou-tai showcasing a Phoenix with a wingspan of 1.8 meters and height of 8.8 meters! 😲 My absolute favourite was the Hotei-tai float, home to a dancing marionette. It takes 8 puppeteers, maneuvering 36 strings inside the float, to make this marionette perform its awe-inspiring jumps and somersaults 😲 I had the chance to watch a behind-the-scenes video of this in the visual room. Don't miss the last photo for a close-up glimpse of the small, but mighty marionette. The Gold shrine in the photo is a portable shrine called Mikoshi and weights about 2.5 tonnes 😱 80 people and two long bars are needed to carry the shrine. All the floats are located in an exhibition hall with 10 metre ceiling height 🫣 These floats are changed three times a year so people can see different ones when visiting 😲 Just think of the teamwork required to navigate these behemoths through the crowd-filled streets. That's what I call the spirit of a matsuri! 🙌

Le Pain Mujo is a popular bakery in Takayama, located just a five-minute walk from Miyagawa Morning Market. Established in 2020, the bakery specializes in traditional French bread baked in a stone oven by an owner who trained for 18 years in Tokyo. The cozy bakery offers freshly baked sourdough breads and pastries such as Kouign-amann and canele. Visitors praise the warm and friendly atmosphere, with some recommending arriving early to enjoy the fresh bakes.
Bustling bakery with many locals. They serve amazing baked goods, some of the best we’ve ever had! Tried the kouign amann, canelé, baguette and far breton, all were great but we especially enjoyed the sweet pastries which had a crunchy caramel shell and light and crisp layers. Staff were really friendly too.

Great boulangerie! Name in Japanese means “impermanence” which is the essence of what you bake in a wood fire oven .. Bakery at its best. Try the raisin bread fresh or slightly toasted.. a must ! Staff is so nice we chose to have a mini lunch there with sourdough ham and cheese sandwich and a croissant: we’ll be back !

Hida beef tastes slightly different from Kobe beef, and for some reason it’s easier on the palate, which is a good thing. Service is great, as with most eateries in Japan.
ナオキ — Google review
We stayed in Takayama for one day, and this was one of our hotel’s recommended restaurants. Located in the Old Town, we tried the hida beef A5 filet and sirloin, which came with a side of bread or rice, vegetables or fries, and a soup, which we upgraded to french onion. We finished the set meal with an English tea and sorbet. I’m not french, but the food was fantastic! The beef was super fatty and cut like butter. We also had the beef carpaccio which was one of my favorites. The staff was very friendly and had an English menu waiting on the table 😅

Had an absolutely sumptuous dinner at this French restaurant in Takamaya. My friends and I had fillet and sirloin steaks done nearly to perfection. The salad and soup didn't disappoint too. So was dessert creme brulee. The service was good too, staff were attentive. Who said no good things can come from a small town? This restaurant can rival most in Tokyo. Run by a Japanese couple.

we came here cuz we wanted to find something to eat for our toddler. Service was great, I took hamburger which wasn’t looked like it but was delicious like homemade. They have made smaller portion for a half price for our kid and even gave us ice cream as a complimentary.

One of the most magical evenings in Japan. A warm welcome, delicately prepared fine food and lovely plates. We ate steak with vegetables and onion soup. The waiters were so kind and helped us with the menu so that a suitable meal would come out for us. We got an extra dish for dessert without asking. Great and welcoming atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Have had the pleasure of dining here on two separate trips to Takayama. In 6 years of living in Japan I can say, without a doubt, this is one of the best restaurants I’ve ever eaten at. The Hida beef is cooked to perfection. Whether you have the beef cheek, the filet, the fricassee… it’s all superb. Excellent service in a chic but cozy dining room. A must if you are in the area and can get a reservation.

We were so lucky to turn up at opening time without a reservation to get a table reserved for 7pm, so had to leave before then which was fine. Needless to say you must make a reservation. Best meal I had in Japan, hida steak is amazing, unreal, research it for why. Great staff, best restaurant in town.

Day 4

Proximity is everything
For day 4, we bundled attractions like Takayama Shōwa-kan Museum and Takayama Betsuin Shoren-ji Temple and other places within a close range, so that the time it takes to travel between all of them is less than one hour. Combined with the average time people spend there, your day should take about 7 hours.

Takayama Shōwa-kan Museum is an indoor museum that offers a nostalgic journey through the Showa period (1926–1989). Located near the Yasukawa Intersection along National Route 158 in Takayama, it recreates the retro townscape of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Visitors can explore old-style candy stores, hostess bars, and even touch and handle actual artifacts from that era.
This very dense museum can take 30 minutes or 2-3 hours, depending on how interested you are in the Showa period of Japan! Every room is absolutely full of historical items, with a lot of trust put in visitors to not touch / break all of the items. Rooms are convincing, and vary from classrooms, opticians, living rooms, arcades, and plenty more. The effect is made convincing by street signs and advertising all over the place. Each room is absolutely full of unique details, and there's hundreds of opportunities for selfies if interested. Tickets are purchased at the door, after a small souvenir / traditional sweet shop.
Jake L — Google review
It is a small museum that has enough to see to take between 2-4h if you don't rush it. We especially liked the room showing a child's room in the showa era. There were games to play there, digital and analog and we played together for an hour which was a lot of fun. The museum has many small rooms with different themes that embody what life was like during the showa era. A fun and educational experience.
Brokeandroid — Google review
Probably the highlight of my time in Takayama, this is a great little museum that is very dense with products from the Showa era. There were several interactive areas like a car and telephone booth that you could get into, or old video games and pachinko machines that you could play. This is not the kind of museum that would be worth it to rush through, but if you allow yourself to spend time meandering through each room I think it can be very rewarding. It made me feel nostalgic for that era of Japan. Overall I would recommend this museum to most visitors.
Colin S — Google review
Such good fun for all, especially with kids who want to touch things. Everything is interactive and lots of games, role plays etc. We went on a weekday and it wasn't busy at all. Pricing is based on age. What a trip down memory lane for the adults and interesting insights into modern Japanese culture
Clare M — Google review
The “main event” in my opinion. Well worth a visit if you have a fascination with getting a sense of Japan in modern history. I have a massive fascination with the Showa era where “old” and “new” Japan was blended together. I just loved this place. Shop was a bit of a let down, I was hoping to find reprints of Showa era posters etc. Unfortunately, it’s just a sweet shop with some over-priced t shirts.
Mark J — Google review
I had more fun than I expected at this little museum. The retro vibes were awesome. I particularly liked the room where they had an old style classroom as well as the room where you could actually play an old Sega game (which I did!). It was like a trip to a not so distant past, where things are very familiar and yet very different.
Aracruz1988 — Google review
An absolutely fascinating museum showcasing all kinds of rooms and everyday life from the Showa era. For 1,200 yen you can explore two full floors filled with authentic furniture, household items, and interiors that truly transport you back in time. A must-visit for anyone interested in old Japan!

Takayama Castle Ruins, dating back to around 1608, are located in a serene wooded area. Visitors can take a peaceful stroll along the Higashiyama temple Promenade from Ryuunji Temple to Shiroyama Park, where the remains of the 16th century castle can be found. The Teramachi district nearby boasts over 10 temples and shrines within close proximity.
Just a bit of warning, there are some hiking paths on the route between Hie Shrine and the Castle Ruins that have a lot of poison ivy on the trails.

The hike itself is nice but there are practically no ruins other than some information boards. Some great views of the northern Japanese alps

It is a nice hike through the woods to get up here, but from a here you can't really see a lot. you can't see the city you can only see the mountains. There is almost nothing left from the castle. Just a few stones.
Patrick S — Google review
Not much to see but still worth the exercise, views and forest experience, a good way to escape the more touristy part of town. Lots of other interesting shrines, monuments and historical features to see on the way up and back from the castle ruins.
Paolo D — Google review
It can be reached by foot only with lots of steps to climb, the path was not paved with stone or concrete and can be muddy after the rain. My legs were tired after climbing there. Not recommended for seniors with disability and small children. Not so great view of the city as most views were obscured by trees. So not great for photography. Pretty much like walking in the woods for good air and exercise.

Wonderful experience touching wild life in forest. It's located just 300-meter from old town. You can go in side of Shinmei parking lot 50-meter East from red bridge and walk up narrow slope to mountain. Then arrive at the ring trail entrance. Go counter clock wise route into the forest. It's two-kiro-meter or 40-minutes beautiful walk hideaway from crowded noise. The roof coverd bench with toilet located middle of the route called Kin-ryu-gaoka. Wild birds and squirrels picked up penuts from your hand there. Antelope natural monument family also live there. All wild animals are careflly protected by locals walk around there for their health eveyday. They talk with you "O-ha-yo-u go-zai-masu" or Good morning with smile friendly all the time. Takayama Station

4.1
(838)
Train station
Takayama Station is located in Hida-Takayama, a historic castle town that flourished during the Edo period. The Sanmachi District, encompassing areas like Kamisannomachi and Kamininomachi, showcases traditional residences and buildings from the late Edo to Meiji periods. The streets maintain their original Edo-era charm with old stores exuding a sense of prosperity.
The station is so pretty and well decorated I love it. Great and clean view. This station does NOT take suica or any IC card, bring cash.
Jimmy L — Google review
Overcrowded, non-functional station. Looks good on the inside and on the outside, but has difficulty’s when it comes to the actual use of a train station. There not enough ticket machines (only 1 where it’s possible to reservate seat tickets via QR Code). It’s not possible to go to the platform before a special time. And there is poor signage.
Carsten — Google review
Great little train station here in Takayama. Small but very functional and actually a lot more modern than I expected! Conveniently located in this part of town next to bus terminal. Immaculately clean! Even has a section that is Museum!
DR. T — Google review
This is a great station to access Takeyama by. There are some decorative artefacts and old woodworking tools on display too.
Simon — Google review
Nice and clean station. Have a toilet after the ticket check gate, and have a toilet downstair. (It will so cold when use have to use it in winter and snowing). Have one souvenir shop before the ticket check gate and have a waiting area.
Kiroku K — Google review
Nice, beautiful and simple station. There's locker rental just outside around the exit. Regular size is 600 yen. 100 more expensive than the one at Kyoto station.
Kev P — Google review
The newly renovated when I visit in May 2023. A very clean and convenient station hall connecting the east and west exits has a local art and culture of Takayama display.

Surprisingly great design! I got off the bus in the afternoon and didn't notice the design. But it caught my attention on the way back after dinner. It is such a good looking building and hardly seen on a train station.

Takayama Sky Park

(527)
Park
Takayama Sky Park is a small park with an excellent observation deck offering stunning views of the Japanese Alps. Located about 20-25 minutes' walk from Takayama station, it's away from the main tourist spots, making it less crowded. The park provides a safe and easy walk up a small hill with only about 60 meters of elevation gain. Visitors can enjoy the breathtaking panorama of the Northern Alps, including Mt. Norikura, Mt. Yakedake, Mt.
Few mins drive from the city centre. There is a parking lot here for free. The view is stunning on a good day in summer. I’m sure it will look as beautiful in winter with the snow on the mountains. Many Japanese local people are doing laps here.
J. Q — Google review
Beautiful park with beautiful view! We love the hike up to the park. On the top it’s just a short paved loop but the views are what you come here for.
Thomson V — Google review
The walk up to Takayama Sky Park is definitely a workout and might not be for everyone, but the views from the top are incredibly rewarding! It's a peaceful spot to relax for a bit, with restrooms and a vending machine available. Just a heads-up: keep an eye out for bears – seriously!
Ryan K — Google review
The view is pretty unreal at sunset. Super easy to get to if you’re driving. Worth the trip at sunset if you’ve got time to spare. We stayed no more than 30mins.
Zerlina L — Google review
How amazing for a view of this beautiful town! I even met some wonderful locals who joined me in a conversation amd we took photos. Came up in summer, and on a clear day, so could see all of the mountains. Would be amazing in any season on a clear day. Worth the walk. You can get the bus from the JR Train Station but you still have to walk up the winding road. Don't worry about the wild boar signs.
Greg M — Google review
A beautiful view of Takayama! The parking is free, there’s an athletic track and restrooms. The parking is free.

Dessert restaurant
Fukyuan is a traditional teahouse located in Takayama, tucked away on a small street. The teahouse offers delicious Warabi Mochi, which is soft and perfect when paired with kinako and vanilla ice cream. It also features an outdoor garden with a lovely view. The cafe is known for its delicious desserts such as ice cream, crepes, and parfaits, along with good coffee and matcha.
While they did not serve the pancake, the other desserts are delicious as well! The apple pie was warm and not overly sweet, really brought out the apple flavor. Wife had a crepe and it was just rich in flavor. For lunch, this is a great place to visit. They have food and it was very flavorful as well. Loved this restaurant, staff is friendly and speak a little English but translator is always best to use.

We loved this place so much that we visited twice during our stay — and both times were amazing! We had the crepes and the warabi mochi, both absolutely delicious, especially the mochi with ice cream!! The coffee was great too, and the yuzu tea was surprisingly not too sweet, which was a really nice surprise for me. The atmosphere is so calm and relaxing — the little Japanese garden next to us made it even more special. On our second visit, we sat Japanese-style on the tatami floor, which felt really authentic. The staff were super friendly and even told us about a festival event happening outside so we could go watch it. Overall, such a lovely place with amazing desserts, great drinks, and the nicest vibe! Highly recommend 🌸🍵✨

Loved visiting the cafe, set in a gorgeous house with interior garden to look over. It’s the cutest place. The staff are so sweet and helpful finding me the gluten free options. I ordered the crepe made from rice flour with chocolate and whipped cream. It was delicious! Even my non gluten free boyfriend loved it! 100% recommend coming here.

Cute traditional café ! We had to take off our shoes to enter and we were guided to a peaceful, warm and beautiful room among the many rooms this shop has.
Anya — Google review
We stumbled upon this quaint cafe in a little laneway and really enjoyed trying local delicacies. Just like when going to someone’s house, we had to remove our shoes. We loved the view of the internal courtyard. The soft serve tofu ice cream was the standout, nutty and rich, not too sweet, with a nice smooth texture. Warabi mochi was interesting too.
Cheryl L — Google review
Fukyuan is a hidden gem tucked away in Takayama’s charming old town—nestled in a peaceful side lane just steps from the bustling tourist streets. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by the warmest smiles and gracious hospitality, instantly setting the tone for what would become one of our most memorable dining experiences in Japan. We were shown to a table overlooking a serene central garden—an absolutely breathtaking view. It felt like stepping back in time into a refined traditional home, where classic Japanese architecture meets tasteful modern design. As sunlight poured in through the engawa, the space was bathed in a golden glow, accompanied by the gentle backdrop of soft jazz—it was truly atmospheric. We ordered a coffee float and a pizza, and both were outstanding. The pizza had a perfectly crisp, wood-fired crust that rivaled any we’ve had before. During our few weeks in Takayama, Fukyuan quickly became our favorite spot, not just for the food, but for the genuine kindness of the family who runs it. Each return visit felt like coming home. If you’re in Takayama, I wholeheartedly recommend a visit. And whatever you do—don’t leave without trying the crepes. They’re absolutely to die for. – Ronnie

Matsuki Burger is a popular spot located just a few meters from the station, offering delicious beef burgers and great fries. The outdoor seating provides a pleasant dining experience when the weather is nice. The Hida Beef Set, featuring a Hida Beef patty with salad filling, fries, and a drink, is highly recommended. Visitors also praise the friendly owners and recommend trying the Tamago burger for its unique Japanese twist.
BEST BURGER AND CUSTOMER SERVICE. Went here twice during my two day stay because the owner was so nice and attentive (and the food of course was delicious). I ordered a Hida burger one time and it was very tender and juicy. The set was reasonably priced and included fries and a drink, which the fries were salted just right and very well done. The second time I ordered the minced Hida burger and it was deliciously crunchy. The owner goes above and beyond to make sure you are well taken care of and I can’t recommend this place enough!

Best burger I've eaten during my trip to Japan! Not too expensive, the waiter was very lovely, service was very fast and good. The burgers were so delicious. I 100% recommend!!! I visited in march 2025

Absolutely stunning beef burgers. Super flavoursome, juicy and tasty. It was so good my partner went back for a second burger! There's also a lovely shaded courtyard seating area to enjoy the burgers and drinks. Sadly by the time we arrived (~1 PM) they had already sold out of the beef sushi. I also found the ice cream incredibly creamy and enjoyable. Would highly recommend this place!
Silva S — Google review
Really good and really juicy burgers! It looks like it's run by two people, so although the service can be a little slow, they are welcoming to foreigners and are very friendly people! The burgers were very juicy, and I enjoyed the fries as well. There is some bench seating and outdoor seating around the corner.
Matt K — Google review
We visited around 18:00, about 30 minutes before closing, and unfortunately the popular Matsuki Burger was already sold out. We opted for two Hida beef burgers instead. The food was… not great, not terrible — decent, but didn’t quite justify the price in our opinion. Communication with the cashier (possibly the owner) was a bit difficult. He seemed rushed and slightly nervous, which didn’t contribute to a very welcoming experience. Overall, we left wondering what the hype in the other positive reviews was really about.
Vytautas M — Google review
It’s not a five star experience because the Hyda Burger and the Shrimp Burger were a bit plain. We were expecting a bit more flavor, especially considering the price it’s not a cheap burger, so our expectations were high.
Lorena E — Google review
Yummy Hida burger near train station, be prepared to wait as it’s popular! Fresh lettuce, tomato and onion. Burger was generous and only reason for 4 and not 5 stars was middle was raw but believe that is how Hida beef prepared as Takayama also known for their raw beef. Just a matter of preference.

Must try when in Takayama. Hida Beef Burger is exceptional. Everything is super fresh and crispy. I had 2 burgers it was so delicious. Two ladies behind this establishment were friendly and they prepared the meal pretty quick all though it was only two of us. Outside seating only or standing.

Hamburger restaurant
Center4 Hamburgers is a charming and cozy eatery that offers an array of original burgers, along with a selection of beer and cocktails, all within a quirky space filled with antique decor. One standout option is the Hida Beef burger, which is highly recommended for those seeking something unique. The restaurant's ambiance resembles that of a vintage shop or museum, making it an interesting place to dine.
I don’t even like burgers, and this place was just 11/10. Something about their burgers, so simple but fresh, was so amazing. We were so impressed after our lunch here, we came back for dinner on the same day! Definitely suggest having a reservation for dinner because they only seat 4 tables + the bench so space is tight. Service is outstanding, drinks and sides were good, deco is so unique, can’t fault anything. Sad we have to leave otherwise we’d come again! The staff were kind enough to give us their badge which was so nice, and we gave them another napkin drawing for their collection

4 star overall for Center4 hamburgers. The burger itself is great, classic hamburger, uncomplicated, with lettuce tomato diced onion mayonnaise and mustard. Toasted buttery bun, and the patty is fair in size. The fries are nicely cut potato fries, not classic string fries, though the portions of fries that come with the burger were a little small. Service is good, slightly on the slower end from what we've been accustomed to in Japan. The cheese burger and fries cost us 1400¥, without drinks. We came for lunch, and we waited 30 minutes at 1pm. We showed up the evening before at 645pm and they had already sold out of burgers, we were quite shocked and a bit annoyed but still decided to come back the next day. This place definitely needs a reservation.

Love it! The building has Americana vintage decor and collectables / beer bottles from all over the world. We had the cheese burger, hamburger and the hida burger. Short wait on a weekday - it's only a small restaurant with only two tables for four people available. Recommend - the patties and fresh tomatoes were absolutely amazing. Simple but so good.
Clare M — Google review
Solid burgers, open late, hidden deep inside a building on an empty and dark street! The burgers are good and filling, I recommend the chilli bean burger. Fairly touristy, with an intriguing Johnny Cash / retro americana theme inside and currencies pinned up all over the bars. Photos aren't permitted here (you're meant to focus on the food!) so you may not see many. I'd recommend booking in advance, since the place can fill up for dinner (7pm and later). We had our hotel make a reservation as only phone bookings are possible.

Beyond a doubt THE best burger I had. Surrounded by Thank you notes and a Johnny Cash soundtrack. The place is very small, but worth the wait. May your business continue to be prosperous...

Honestly, there not enough good things to say about this place. Extremely kind and hospitable; as we have found everyone in Takayama. As a couple originally from the U.S. but living in Western Europe for the last few years, this place was so refreshing to visit. The burgers are on our top 5 all time list and you can’t find a pickle like they serve here anywhere around our current home. Get the Hida Burger and a side of pickles! Thanks for everything :)

Came here with a group of friends for dinner and can’t say enough good things about this place. The owners were very kind and food was great. The onion rings were great even by American standards and the burgers were great too. We also loved the eclectic antique decor. Highly recommend coming here if you’re in the area!

This is the number one place I would suggest to go to in Japan, not because of the great Japanese food but just as an alternative to it. The quality was the best, the staff was awesome and the environment was super cool. Want to dip into American culture in the middle of Japan, this is the place to go

Fast food, but good. Most of the restaurants nearby do not allow foreigners in so we ended up here as a last resort. Turns out the food and the welcome we received were way better than expected. Ended up ordering extra from the menu that we were excited to try. Free refills on tea, rice and pickles. If this is what a comfort food chain in Japan is like, I’m all for it!
