The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, located in Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture, is a world-renowned paleontology museum known for its extensive collection of dinosaur fossils and reconstructions. With over 40 complete dinosaur skeletons on display, visitors can gain a sense of the immense size of these prehistoric creatures.
Extremely popular museum—you can see license plates from all over Japan. If you like dinosaurs, this place is a must-visit. The kids were very excited to explore and learn. There’s plenty of interesting stuff to see. The buildings themselves are also worth seeing. The architecture looks like a spaceship landing on a small hill in the middle of rice fields. The infrastructure is well-prepared to handle large crowds: clean toilets, a brand-new restaurant, and a wide selection of merchandise. There’s plenty of free parking, so driving here is a great option.
Andy H — Google review
Great museum. Huge area with lots of displays and activities for the kids. The main gallery is an echo chamber which is awesome! Great food in the restaurant and cool playground outside too. Well recommended for kids, families, archaeology enthusiasts and dinosaur buffs! Big carpark, also lots of bus options
Jimmy M — Google review
Great museum. Impressive replicas mix with real fossils. Animaltronix looked nice too. The video works are a bit clumsy though. I really appreciate the faithful English translations on most of their displays. Though there was no translations available for the special exhibition. Also the special exhibition was surprisingly small, I'd suggest skipping it if you can't understand Japanese. The dioramas where the exhibition highlights the changes in the environment through the millions of years with the dinosaurs in them were informative. I went in hoping to gain some new knowledge and I left feeling fulfilled. The gift shop needs to have some imagination regarding the products they offered as I feel they were a bit lackluster.
Johnson ( — Google review
One of the most amazing Museum's I have ever been to. So many different different specimens of dinosaurs on display, even some information in English which makes it easier for tourists to understand. The the museum offers multiple levels and even an exclusive look on how some fossils are prepared. The restaurant offers a good selection of delicious dishes and the souvenir shop a wide variety of different things to buy. Would definitely visit again in the future.
Anthony O — Google review
Pleasantly surprised by this dinosaur museum! The entrance fee was only 1000 yen, but the collection they house is truly impressive and beautifully displayed. The building is also a magnificent piece of architecture. We came during the week and got there at the opening time, so we got to enjoy the place wile it was still quiet. By the time we left 2 hours later, it was quite crowded and the parking was packed. We didn't buy tickets in advance, but maybe it would have been a good idea.. Oh they also have some cool animatronics!
Ilse E — Google review
An outstanding paleontological museum. The trip to the museum takes a long time, but it's worth it. It's best to buy tickets to the museum and the excavation site in advance, as it's very crowded. The bus from the station to the museum costs 300 yen. The museum has a restaurant, playgrounds, a dinosaur park, and a gift shop.
Павел К — Google review
Really great experience, we travelled on the special dinosaur train and transferred to the dinosaur bus which was quick and easy. The bus takes you straight to the museum and greeted with dinosaurs along the route. The museum was spacious and well layed out. There were so many dinosaurs we were overwhelmed. The cafe was reasonably priced with a great selection of food. A menu in English was available.
Samantha I — Google review
My wife and I had a wonderful time visiting the museum. The attention to detail in the museum is world class. It was incredible to see the fossils that were found in Fukui Prefecture. It is not necessary to purchase tickets in advance if you’re visiting on a weekday in our opinion.

Eiheiji Temple, founded in 1244 by Zen teacher Dogen, is a significant site for Zen meditation. It played a crucial role in establishing Soto Zen Buddhism in Japan. The temple's history is intertwined with the Ichijodani Ruins, once a stronghold of the powerful Asakura Clan. Visitors can also explore the natural wonders nearby, such as the Tojinbo Cliffs and Lake Hiruga.
A training school for the Sōtō school of Zen Buddhism, it is an amazingly peaceful place. Only 40 minutes from Fukui Station. Visit early morning and enjoy the sun rise and tranquility.

(Translated by Google) After visiting Eiheiji Temple, arranging bus transfers to the following locations will make your trip more fulfilling. First up is the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, which displays stunning dinosaur fossils and related exhibits and is a must-visit for visitors interested in natural history. Next is the Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins, which preserves rich historical and cultural heritage and is the best place to learn about the history of the Fukui area. If you are eager to relax, you can go to JR Awara Onsen Station to enjoy the hot springs, or take the Echizen Railway to Awara Yunomachi Station to feel the local style and charm. Finally, return to Fukui Station to end the day's journey. Please note that since the bus frequency is less frequent, it is recommended that you plan your trip in advance to make the most of your time. This kind of time arrangement not only allows you to deeply experience the diverse charms of Fukui, but also allocates time reasonably among various attractions, making the journey more rich and interesting. It's about a 5-minute walk to the main gate of Eiheiji Temple, but along the way there are souvenir shops and the approach to the shrine is very lively. You can buy a return bus ticket at the tea shop ``Ikkyu'' in front of the bus stop, but you can also pay with a transportation IC card on the bus, so there is no need to buy a prepaid ticket. Rather, I would like to make sure to line up properly at the bus stop so that I don't end up not being able to board because the bus is overloaded. Maruoka Castle, located in Fukui Prefecture, is a historic hilltop 3-story castle originally built around 1600 and rebuilt after an earthquake. It offers stunning views of the city and surrounding park. The castle is known for its oldest flat-land architectural style among Japan's original castles and has been designated as an important cultural property. With its distinctive unglazed slate roof tiles, the castle stands out as a national treasure.
As one of the 12 remaining castle keeps from the Edo period, it’s a must to visit if you are drawn to Japan Sengoku history. It’s relatively small compare to Himeji or Matsumoto but there are some interesting things to learn about this place.
Kenny C — Google review
A well-preserved, historic castle with a picturesque moat invites exploration. In the garden, delicate cherry blossoms bloom, lending the place an almost fairytale-like atmosphere. Visitors have the opportunity to ascend all the way into the tower under the roof – but beware: the stairs are narrow and steep, turning the climb into a small adventure. Inside the castle, a fascinating exhibition awaits, featuring impressive samurai armors, historical weapons, and artistic portraits that offer a vivid insight into bygone eras. Nice to see and take pictures. However, it is not absolutely necessary to go into the castle.
Yasmin G — Google review
Maruoka Castle is a charming little castle with lots of history—it’s actually one of Japan’s oldest surviving castles, built way back in 1576! The original keep is still standing, which is pretty cool. Entrance is ¥450 for adults and ¥150 for kids, so it’s super affordable, and there are group discounts too. The castle sits on a small hill, giving nice views of the surrounding area. Inside, the stairs are pretty steep, so take care if you’re not confident on your feet. There’s also a small museum nearby with some interesting history about the castle. Cherry blossom season here is beautiful, making it a perfect spot for photos and a peaceful stroll. It’s not too crowded, so you can really enjoy the atmosphere. Open daily from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry 4:30 PM). Definitely worth a stop if you’re exploring Fukui!
Ramil R — Google review
Maruoka Castle is not the grandest, tallest, toughest, or toughest castle in Japan. But it is easily the loveliest. It gives you a great sense of a moderate mediaeval build, prioritising function over form, while still staying beautiful. I was particularly charmed by the community's efforts to keep the castle ground alive, clean, and attractive. For this purpose an elegant new information hall has been constructed by the side of the caslte, with even part of the old moat restored, to add reflections to the already nice view.
Emiel H — Google review
One of the 12 original castles in all of Japan. An interesting visit. Be careful with the stairs to the second and third floors because they are very steep. Perhaps not recommended for older people. With the ticket you can visit the museum of short messages. Very interesting if you can read a little Japanese.
Matias S — Google review
One of the 12 remaining castle that is still standing since Edo era. Good to visit. The town is serene However for kinen medallion coins seekers, you will be disappointed to know that there are no coins made for this attraction.

This was a nice castle to stop and see. It is one of 12 castles standing in Japan that has its original top decoration from its original construction.

From Kanazawa, took the local train for Fukui and got off at Maruoka station. From there took the bus to Maruokajo station. It was a small yet nice looking castle. Climbing stairs inside the castle is a bit of an exercise :)

Echizen Ono Castle is a modern reconstruction of a 16th-century stone castle located in Ono, Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture. Built by Nagachika Kanamori, a vassal of Nobunaga Oda, the castle has a history dating back to its construction in 1576. The stonewalls and moat still exist today, and the castle tower was rebuilt in 1968 based on historical references.
Such a unique place in the middle of a young town of Ono. 360° views from the castle are stunning. We were too late for the tour but the castle building itself is quite impressive. It has a pond full of coy fish and the reflection of castle in the pond is beautiful. Recommend if you're nearby.
Raj A — Google review
It was pretty much snowed in but I had to take a look regardless it was worth it, even through climbing those steps in 10 inch snow wasn’t easy!
CHRIS C — Google review
Smallish reconstructed castle . Up a hill- which means a hike up 200+ steps . There is a fee to visit the interior . Looks pretty in its hilly setting
Eileen W — Google review
A cool rebuild of a castle It looks great from the outside and it's pretty center of oono so that's cool as it's ready to get there. The park around it was beautiful in autumn. As usual in Japan, the castle is rebuild. The inside is a museum but it's a bit of a shame that they did not try to redo the rings in the old style, too.
Siemon S — Google review
The castle in the Sky! Is. 400 years old magnificent castle surrounded by a beautiful town that looks like a little Kyoto, is charming place.
Nolberto P — Google review
Pretty small compared to the Himeji and Nagoya Castles. The interior of the building was mostly renovated and was not kept in its original state, the floorings were in vinyl while the stairs has the metal edges. No taking of photos are allowed once inside the building. Ono City is pretty clean though a bit sleepy. No food stalls or stores are open especially on Sundays. No 7-11's or Family Mart as well. The train from Fukui to Ono City by way of Kuzuryu (JR Train) has an interval of 3 hrs, be sure to bring some food supplies for the long wait.
Elmer L — Google review
After visiting the Ichijōdani Asakura Family Historic Ruins, we took the bus to Ōno-shi.After gettingt off at the Ōno bus stop, we walked toward the Ōno Castle. There were several cold springs along the road. We heard that the spring water of Ōno-shi is very famous in Japan, so we tasted some, oh! very cool and refreshing. Ōno Castle was located at Kameyama Hill, so we had to go climbing the hill to arrive at the castle. After a while, we finally arrived at Ōno Castle. There were many artifacts in the castle and visitors were not allowed to take pictures. When we went upstairs to the castle tower, we saw the beautiful scenery of the city. The Ōno-shi is far from the Fukui and the bus fee is expensive. So If you want to take the bus to the Ōno-shi, I suggest that you can buy the Holiday One-Day Pass from the Keifuku Bus counter in the Echizen Railway Fukui Station, then you can save much money.

The Ichijōdani Asakura Ruins is a historic site that offers a glimpse into the 15th-century castle town of the Asakura Clan. This well-preserved area includes residences, gardens, and remnants of the magnificent castle town that was ruled by the warlords of the Asakura Clan for over a century. Designated as a national historic site, it is one of Japan's largest town ruins dating back to the early 15th century.
I really love this place. It's incredibly beautiful and it feels so good here. There are awesome festivals, check their web site to know more. I'm happy to see the festival with lanterns this year. Earlier I came to watch fireflies. There is also a beautiful exhibition every summer. Local people are so kind and friendly. I come every season here
Kitty — Google review
Not really much there so unless you are REALLY into Sengoku period history it's probably not all that interesting. The restored buildings on the other side of the road are a bit more interesting though, and this area is free so not really a lot to lose if you are in the area, but I don't feel like it's essential if you are not near or are pushed for time.
Barry K — Google review
Ruin grounds themselves not much to see. Perhaps interesting for historians and purveyors of rocks, otherwise not worth visiting. The surrounding grassy area seemed to have the beginnings of a festival, which was cool though.
Jason C — Google review
Seems that they're making this place into something. There's lots of construction/ preservation going on which is a good thing. It really is a beautiful place. Calm, peaceful, amazing fresh air. Very tranquil place to while away some time. You could easily spend a day here, take a picnic, but we were 'touristing' so we spent a few hours before heading to Eiheiji by bus. Possibly my favourite place in this area.

Asakura Ruisns is one of the landmarks in Fukui prefecture that you cannot miss, this historical place is surrounded by beautiful nature and old buildings where you can experience how was the life of Samurai 500 years ago.
Nolberto P — Google review
I very unique excavation site with a captivating samurai past. The gates to the ruins are particularly beautiful. There are many pretty streams and very large koi you can feed for 100 yen. The samurai village really got my imagination flowing. The town itself is beautiful. A Fukui must see.
Shan B — Google review
Ichijōdani Asakura Family Historic Ruins is one of the most worthwhile attractions in Fukui. Due to the inconvenient transportation of the ruins, we took a bus to the Ichijōdani Asakura Family museum and borrowed bicycles from the museum. The deposit for each bicycle was 1000 yen, and would be refunded after the bicycle was returned. In fact, museum also provided free shuttle service. The staffs of the museum were very kind and patiently guided us to the ruins. Then, we rode the bicycles among the fields and enjoyed the beautiful country scenery. We spended about 10 minutes to reach the ruins. The gate of the ruins was very elegant, and many tourists stop at the front of the door to take pictures. After entering the gate, we saw that many ruins of wells, walls, gardens and palaces were preserved on the ground. Following the stone steps, there was a platform with ruins of water and a bridge. It was said that when the castle was attacked, the castle owner bridge can destroy the bridge to prevent the enemies entering, which is the same as the design of Hikone Castle. Otherwise, there were some photographers taked pictures here.If you have enough time, I will suggest you to spend 2 to 3 hours to enjoy everything here.

Town area is well reconstructed. You can experience how people lived in the past. The castle and other buildings are but ruins with gardens around them. In the stream there are lots of beautiful Koi carps that you can feed. Nice visit to daydream about the time in the past, surrounded by green mountains.

Nestled in the heart of Fukui City, the Fukui Castle Ruins offer a glimpse into Japan's storied past. Originally constructed in 1606, this castle served as a powerful stronghold for the Echizen Matsudaira family during the Edo period. Although it was tragically lost to fire in 1669 and never rebuilt, remnants like its impressive stone walls and moats still stand proudly today.
A very pretty sight especially in spring with the cherry blossom. The information signs were very informative and easy to read containing different languages. The castle ruins is a short walk from Fukui station.

You can see the wonderful stone walls and outer moat. Unfortunately, the prefectural office building is located on the castle ruins. There is a parking lot in the basement of this building. If you present your parking ticket at the information desk at the entrance on the first floor of the prefectural office building, it is free of charge.

Posting because I hadn't seen it mentioned yet, If you are looking for the castle stamp it is inside the main government building. If you are looking for the castle gojoin (similar to but different from the goSHUin) that can be found at the nearby Fukui city museum. If you are on a castle hunt, try to come when the offices are open. There is no castle; just a moat and some signs along with the government buildings but the park is a very nice walk.

Yōkōkan Garden, located in Fukui Prefecture, was the second home of the Matsudaira family during the Edo period. This Zen-like venue features a classic tearoom-style building and a picturesque pond at its center. The elegant shoin style architecture and garden make it one of the representative gardens of the mid-Edo period.
Absolutely stunningly beautiful and tranquil gardens! Thank you to Yumi and all the other guides who gave us a tour today - they spoke English, provided helpful and interesting information about the history of the gardens, and were super friendly. Definitely worth a visit when you’re in Fukui!

Nice traditional Japanese garden in the middle of the city. Most if not all of it isn't original due to the war, but still a quiet, serene place with nice architecture.

Had a wonderful time visiting Yokokan Garden in Fukui. The garden is absolutely beautiful—peaceful, well-maintained, and full of charm. During my visit, two friendly Japanese ladies were walking around and kindly took the time to explain some details & history in English about the garden to us, even though we were foreign visitors. Their warm and welcoming attitude made the experience even more special. I highly recommend visiting this lovely place when being in Fukui!

After exploring the Fukui Castle ruins, I stumbled upon this enchanting garden. While it may be small, the highlight of my visit was sitting by the edge of the house and gazing upon the serene Zen garden. Witnessing the reflection on the pond felt like a meditative experience. Visiting during Japan's Golden Week allowed me to witness the azaleas and vibrant new greenery at their peak. I'm already picturing myself returning in the fall to experience the garden's transformation.

The staff were so friendly and informative— I learned about the history and reconstruction of this site, which made the visit even more meaningful. I’ll definitely come back next time I’m in Fukui!

Wish we had more time but we had to rush to catch our train. Beautiful garden and house. It was only after I read the details in the brochure once I'd left I discovered that that this is a reconstruction as the place was burnt down at the end of the war during bombing raids. It was a lovely sunny day on our visit and this made it more alluring. Well worth making the little effort it takes to get here.

This is the beautiful spot & I highly recommend you to visit when you ever go to Fukui city. The view from inside the house overlooking the lake was divine & I could easily stay there for ages. I would love to go back again to feel tranquility of the garden.

Fukui Station is a futuristic and easily navigable transportation hub that serves as a gateway to the idyllic countryside of Fukui, Japan. This region offers a blend of wild nature, traditional crafts, and samurai-era sites for visitors to explore. The station is set to become even more accessible with the upcoming Hokuriku Shinkansen line from Tokyo in 2024.
We arrived in early November 2024 to transfer to a local train line that would take us to the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum. To our surprise, Fukui Station turned out to be a uniquely themed transportation hub centered around dinosaurs. The clean, spacious environment, combined with vibrant dinosaur decor, created an unforgettable atmosphere. We couldn't resist taking a few photos before boarding the local train to the museum, which is conveniently located in the building adjacent to Fukui Station. After exploring the wonders of the Fukui Dinosaur Museum and while waiting for our train back to Kanazawa, we decided to venture nearby the station. There, we enjoyed delicious local soba at a restaurant situated in a building next to the station. We also took the opportunity to explore the exterior of the dinosaur-themed Fukui Station. Additionally, we noticed a sitting area in the station that offered a fantastic view of a miniature model of Fukui's city center. Unfortunately, our itinerary did not include a stay in Fukui, but we make it a point to explore the area more thoroughly on our next trip.
Khal E — Google review
Nice layout and nice amount of stores within Fukui Station. Good amount of restaurants are around as well. I love how Fukui really owns the dinosaur theme and some statues are in and around the station as well. Not particularly busy on a Monday evening either. Trains are easy to navigate and the station is conveniently located.

Dinosaurs in a station? Of course! This station is amazing. Check out the dinos front and back too.

The station features dinosaur statues both inside and outside, which are the signature of the place. I really love the cozy atmosphere here.

Fukui station is largely dinosaur themed. It is newly opened and just now serves the HokurikU Shinkansen line for Tokyo and Tsuruga. It is the hub for the Hapi Fukui line serving most of the prefecture. A few Shinkansen trains take a stop here. Many department stores line the square, such as CuruF. A park outside has built in dinosaur animatronics.
Lucas L — Google review
A nice station overall with plenty of food options and a very cool entrance with Animatronic dinosaurs. The station is relatively small and well laid out. Very hard to get lost in this station.

Buddhist temple

Sacred & Religious Sites
Nestled in a serene forest, Daihonzan Eiheiji is a remarkable Zen Buddhist temple complex that dates back to the 13th century. Founded by the revered Zen master Dogen Zenji in 1244, this sacred site embodies tranquility and spiritual depth. Known as the 'Temple of Eternal Peace,' Eiheiji serves as one of the two main temples of Soto Zen Buddhism in Japan. Visitors will find themselves immersed in an atmosphere where wellness and mindfulness are paramount.
The most beautiful temple we visited on our trip. It has such a calm and peaceful feeling. There’s so much to see, and you can also just sit and enjoy the quiet surroundings. We went at the end of March and there was still snow, which made it even more special. Loved it and would definitely recommend visiting.
Reeva S — Google review
A truly beautiful Buddhist temple, I’m so grateful I could come and be blessed with the incredible views of the nature and temple buildings. I really appreciated the Dharma teachings hung up in the corridor near the main entrance as these lessons mean a lot to me and it was so nice being in an environment with great energy as people who practice the same lessons can come together and cultivate the peaceful atmosphere. It was truly a joy for me to walk through the temple and gaze upon all the sights, plus read about the history and meaning behind certain halls on their wooden information tablets.
Mai — Google review
This is one of the most beautiful places I have been in my entire life. If this place was in Kyoto it would be absolutely overrun by tourists. The somewhat obscure location is pretty easy to get to via an hourly direct bus from Fukui station, and the town below the temple is lovely (and don't miss the soy sesame soft serve at the cafe on the highway)! Entering the temple grounds, the beautiful setting of an old growth cedar forest is breathtaking, particularly the mossy but well maintained cemetery. The interior is just as incredible. The room of gorgeous ceiling paintings was entrancing, but the highlight was probably being able to witness the mesmerizingly beautiful chanting and meditations of the monks. The thick (and enforced) silence of the monastery add to the literal zen atmosphere. The best thing I can say about Eiheiji is that it would fit right into a movie like "Baraka" or "Samsara". If you ever find yourself in this part of Japan, this is an absolute must see.
Evan P — Google review
Definetely a must see place in Japan. Not only it is one of the important #temples in Japan and accomodates Zen monks trainings and practices which visitors can join some of the activities also the surrounding with beautiful tall cedar trees. Amazing view especially during winter when it is snowing. The temple has many buildings connected by covered walkways, it makes it very convenient to experience in #Fukui.

What a magnificent place. If you are a Zen practitioner and in Japan, this should absolutely be on your itinerary. We went to a number of temples while in Japan but the energy you feel at Eiheiji is unmatched. Magnificent trees, building and practice. We spent two days visiting and participating in the morning service and zazen and would have spent a third to do more hiking around the temple. Also what's really nice is because it's out of the typical tourist circuit there are a lot less visitors than any other place we went (we were there on a weekday so don't know about the weekends).
Christopher W — Google review
Daihonzan Eiheiji is a vast complex for zen teachings situated in Fukui. I arrived there early winter last December but was surprised to still see the moss-covered surroundings. The place is very serene although timing in terms of transportation needs to be considered because of its limited schedule.

Eiheiji Temple One-Day Monk Experience – A Peaceful and Enlightening Retreat It took me about 3.5 hours to travel from Tokyo to Fukui, but the journey was absolutely worth it. Eiheiji Temple offers a deeply peaceful and reflective atmosphere, unlike anywhere I’ve ever been. The highlight for me was learning zazen (seated meditation) the proper way. The program had English-speaking guides who were incredibly kind and respectful to us international participants. There were only six of us from abroad, while the rest were Japanese students (around 10–15). They followed a different schedule from us, and honestly, I wish I spoke Japanese to engage more deeply with the experience. We were asked to wake up at 3:50 AM, and interestingly, there was no shower the next day—which I personally found a bit uncomfortable. If given a choice, I’d rather wake at 3:30 AM just to have a quick shower and feel refreshed before starting the day. During the zazen session, the core message was clear: enlightenment comes from within, and practice should be part of daily life. I’ve done meditation before, but Soto Zen teaches you to meditate with your eyes open, which is surprisingly challenging. Even in a quiet space, thoughts and emotions constantly bubble up—nothing too serious, just random things. It feels like you’re quietly observing your own soul. And yes, sitting for 30 minutes will definitely make your legs go numb! They also taught us about mindful eating. There was a beautiful chanting ceremony before meals to express gratitude, which I found really touching. They even gave us souvenir chopsticks and a small booklet so we can continue the practice at home. One of the most powerful moments was the early morning prayer ceremony. All the monks gathered and chanted in unison—it felt sacred, healing, and almost magical. Overall, I learned so much from this one-day monk experience. It wasn’t just about meditation or rituals—it was about slowing down, being present, and finding meaning in small, everyday actions. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a meaningful escape from the busy modern world. The one-day monk experience costs ¥15,000 and must be applied for at least a month in advance. Your application also needs to be approved by the temple. I stayed in the women’s tatami room, and it was surprisingly comfortable and beautiful—it honestly felt a bit luxurious. The soft green and yellow tones were calming and well-coordinated, adding to the serene vibe. What really surprised me was the bath setup—it’s similar to a traditional public bath, where everyone bathes nude. There’s even a large shared hot tub in the center where you can soak and relax. It was an unexpected but authentic part of the experience!

Have been to Echizen several times before, but never during Golden Week. Nishiyama Park is quite large, with a lot to do whether it’s a festival season or not. There’s a gorgeous fountain, many trails and footpaths that you can take, and gorgeous views of the entire prefecture from a children’s park atop the hill. There is a small zoo at the top of the hill that is free to be public (though a 100yen donation is suggested and highly appreciated), and there are several primates, birds, and most prominently, a Red Panda (or Lesser Panda) exhibit complete with a walk through enclosure, family tree, and breeding program information. The park itself was beautiful because we happened to visit during the Azalea Festival, with entire hillsides covered in beautiful flowers, lanterns, and of course many vendor booths selling traditional Japanese street food, as well as many Azalea flavored confections. A gorgeous stop if you’re traveling around Echizen!

The Echizen Crab Museum is a unique attraction that features a dome-shaped area with exhibits related to snow crab. Visitors can enjoy exploring aquariums and browsing through a seafood market and café. One of the main highlights is an underwater tunnel that provides an immersive experience for visitors. While it may cater more towards children, the museum offers valuable insights into KANI culture in Japan. Overall, it's an excellent place to learn about this beloved crustacean and its significance in Japanese cuisine and culture.
Very interesting also for foreigners, maybe bring a translator so with you. The museum offers a walk through different stages of the sea level, it showes a variety of fish and ofcourse crabs. you can walk underneath a big water rounding and see fish swimming above your head. It is also very good for kids offers a lot of fun games and information.

Nice little museum right beside the crab market about the crabs for which the place is so popular, the history of the fishery, and with a little interactive area at the end where kids can put their drawings up onto a screen, and play some small games. There's also a 10min short film that plays every 20-30min. Everything is in Japanese so be prepared to use your imagination.

Echizengani Museum : Echizen Crab Museum 越前ガニミュージアム Echizen Crab Museum is located right across the road from Road Station of Echizen Coast. In this museum you can see a large variety of marine creatures live in this area. Each show room has its own theme built in a property space of 300 square meters. The facility was built in 2016. You are also able to enjoy hands on trial of operating a ship for hunting crabs. Admission fee is 500 yen for adults and 300 yen for children. When you just entered the course there is a ramp way spiraling down the hall with a miniature of traditional townscape of Echizen Coast where fishermen live. I wanted to try one of Fukui’s specialties: Echizen soba, and ended up here because of the higher number of Google reviews. We ordered several set meals to share, including the 100th anniversary special. Everything we tried was delicious. The Echizen soba had good flavor, though the texture was softer than I expected and the buckwheat aroma was also milder than I thought. We also got to try another Fukui specialty on their menu: the sauce katsudon, which came with a tangy sauce and was very tasty. They offer many seasonal menu items as well. This place is located in an industrial area, and only later did I realize it is actually part of the factory that produces Echizen soba. The restaurant is within the souvenir shop and it’s convenient to browse after your meal.

The Noritake Kinashi exhibition at the Fukui City Art Museum garnered a good number of visitors on a weekday. The art, which featured hand motifs, caught their attention. The Fukui City Museum of Natural History is a captivating museum that offers a wide range of exhibits and activities. The displays are meticulously crafted, offering engaging content for both adults and children alike. Visitors should not miss the observation deck, which provides stunning panoramic views of the eastern side of the city as well as the surrounding mountains.
It's only 100 yen to enter. So that's cool. There are a lot of bugs, birds and other taxidermied animals. And rocks. All native to Fukui. Unless you want to sit and examine every leaf they have displayed here, you'll get through it all quickly. Nice view on observation deck. There's other things to visit in direct vicinity.

(Translated by Google) The admission fee is 100 yen, which is so cheap that it's hard to understand. I guess it's funded by tax dollars. I went on a weekday, and I was the only one there, so it was almost reserved lol There is a difference in height from the parking lot to the building, which may be difficult for people with walking disabilities. Or rather, the building is quite old, and it's not designed to be barrier-free. It's on top of a mountain, so I think it's quite difficult to walk. There is a free(?) rooftop terrace where you can see a panoramic view of Fukui city. You can clearly see the buildings in front of the station, and I think it's a good place for people who like photography. There is also a park nearby, so it's a great place to relax and spend some time. I come from Kanazawa as a tourist. Before going to this museum, I took a bus and a long walk from 丸岡城. After arriving at 4:40 they told me that the time for entrance was 4:30 as they closed as 5:00. Considering the extremely limited bus between tourist attractions in this city, tourist attractions have the right to reject customers. It is quite interesting isn’t it?
Naoto Y — Google review
Beautiful and well put together museum about the history of Fukui prefecture. The museum is split in twos, in laymen's terms it's basically prewar and postwar. Both areas are really interesting and exhibit many different items in all kinds of shapes and forms. But both areas are also very different from one another. While the prewar area is a traditional kind of museum set up (with all due respect), the postwar area is set up to immitate a bit of a typical street back in the day, just like it would've been back then. Complete with sound effects. Even as a foreigner, you will undoubtedly recognise things from there. The admission fee at the time of writing is ¥100, which I think is well and truly worth the visit. Parking is free, the place is entirely wheelchair accessible, and there's a cafe attached. One note of caution for those who cannot read Japanese: almost all titles and descriptions of the exhibits are in Japanese only (with furigana). It might be helpful to use Google Translate in photo mode, but I feel the museum could also work towards bilingual description plates, so that people from all over can understand what everything is.

Asuwa Shrine, located on Mt. Asuwa in Fukui City, is the oldest shrine in Fukui Prefecture with a history of over 1,500 years. The shrine is famous for its stunning cherry blossom tree and enshrines deities known for safe childbirth and conception. Visitors can receive Goryuin and enjoy the beautiful cherry blossoms during the spring season.

(Translated by Google) Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture When I happened to be passing through Fukui Prefecture, I saw on the local news that the cherry blossoms were blooming here, and even though the season was over, I went anyway. It's on top of a mountain. The parking lot is a little hard to find and there are several places. The weeping cherry trees are green, but at the entrance I got the impression that it was a power spot. When I went down the steps of Shakudani stone, I could see the direction of Fukui Station, and the scenery was great, including the recently built marionettes. Compared to the shrines I've been to, this one is large and in the mountains, which was unusual. (Translated by Google) The temple grounds are located on a hill, and offer particularly excellent views of Fukui city to the northeast. You can drive up, but if you cross Koen-dori at the Sanuchi intersection and start climbing the slope called Atagozaka that starts on your left (although you'll start with a flight of stairs right from the start), the journey is enjoyable. If you're heading by car, just continue up Hydrangea Road and you'll come across a side approach to the left at the top. The side approach leads towards the shrine office, so if you enter from here, you'll see the main hall on your left. The main hall also faces northeast, so the gift shop is to your right. This shrine enshrines Emperor Keitai and the Omiyadokoro no Mitama. These "mitama" refer to a group of deities collectively known as Ikasuri no Kami. According to the shrine's history, it enshrines five deities: Ikui, Fukui, Tsunagai, Asuha, and Hahiki. The Ikasuri deity is synonymous with the famous Ikasuri Shrine adjacent to the Osaka Shinto Shrine Office. Including the sub-shrines within its grounds, this shrine is likely the largest in Fukui. As such, it caters to a wide range of wishes, and the variety and number of gifts offered reflect this. In addition to this shrine, the foothills and the platform on the eastern side of the mountain are home to several other fairly large shrines, including Kedani Kuroryu and Fujishima. Visiting all three at once (even though you won't receive anything) is a great way to get some exercise. Among them, Asuwa-sama offers beautiful views, including the night view, making it one of the famous spots you'll want to include in your sightseeing itinerary.

Katsuyama Station is the final stop on the Echizen Railway Katsuyama Eiheiji Line in Fukui Prefecture, Japan. It's a convenient starting point for exploring the area, with connections to Kuzuryu Lake and Echizen-Ono Station. While waiting at the station, visitors can take a short walk to Sunplaza-mae bus stop to see the picturesque Katsuyama Ohashi Bridge, temples, and convenience stores.

In November 2024, we made a brief stop at this station to catch a bus to the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum. While waiting for the bus, I considered exploring around the station, but it was quite cold that day, so I decided to stay inside. The staff was kind and helpful, even though our Japanese skills were limited. The bus to the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum stops right in front of the station and is easy to identify by the dinosaur images on it. Payment is only by cash. Alternatively, there are taxi waiting outside the station.

Not only can you get on the bus to the Dinosaur Museum, but you can also get on the bus to the Echizen Buddha and Katsuyama Castle Museum. You can use your transportation IC card at the ticket gates of the station. There are toilets, vending machines, and coin lockers inside and outside. Next to it is the "Echizen Railway Cafe," where you can drink roasted coffee on the spot or take it out to drink on the train. The old station building has been renovated and has a modern look, giving it a nice feel. If you go left after leaving the station, you will find the bus stop for the Dinosaur Museum. Nishiyama Park's hillside zoo in Sabae City is home to several rare and endangered species of fauna, including brown-eared pheasants. The open air enclosures at the zoo hold a remarkable quantity of red pandas, which can be observed from a proximity of one meter or less. Visitors are treated to picturesque views of the city while enjoying the sights and sounds of the animals. This attraction is definitely worth traveling to see.
You can enjoy the adorable red pandas at no cost! I spent over an hour in their playroom, and they appeared happy and well-cared for in their environment. Unlike other zoos where their habitats are enclosed in glass, here you can observe them up close! Can’t wait to visit them again 🤩

Okamoto Otaki Shrine, also known as Okamoto Shrine, is a unique and tranquil shrine located in Japan. It is the only shrine in the country dedicated to the goddess of paper, with a fascinating legend surrounding its origins. The shrine features beautiful traditional wooden architecture set amidst a serene forest, creating a peaceful atmosphere that encourages visitors to slow down and relax. The main shrine boasts amazing architecture with a unique roof and intricate carvings, making it worth spending time observing.
This is a beautiful little shrine. There are only a few buildings but the detail and forest backdrop make it special.

Very nice wooden shrine with beautiful carvings of dragons. The shrine is completely surrounded by nature with tall trees. We visited late in the afternoon and there were only 4 other people visiting the area which made the experience even better. We did not spend a lot of time here though but it was overall a good decision to come visit it. We drove to get here and the streets were pretty narrow but eventually we got into the main road. There is free parking on site with big signs that will guide you there.

Amazing architecture of the main shrine, with such a unique roof and intricate carvings all around. I will suggest spending some time just to observe the shrine building. The entire shrine site is well sized with a few large trees. When I was there, there was heavy rain which made some mini waterfalls on the shrine area That was pretty unique and cool.
Rtexal T — Google review
One of the most beautiful Shrine of Japan, hugely underrated. But it is a good thing as it allows the place to keep its calm and resourceful energy.
SITIO S — Google review
Beautiful old traditional wooden architecture. A very imposing type of building, standing quite tall, among the even taller trees. Presumably a very old bit of forest. The day I visited it had been raining, which added (positively) to the forest effect. The area is tranquil and gives of an atmosphere that encourages taking it easy. It will definitely slow you down from any bustling city lifestyle. Parking is a bit confusing, but free once you find it - it's on the south-east side, so you'll drive past the shrine initially. The place is not wheelchair-accessible as it requires climbing a flight of stairs to enter the inner shrine grounds. The paths in the outer shrine grounds can be traversed in a wheelchair without much trouble. The toilet is hard to reach on foot, and not wheelchair-accessible, but at least it's there. Entry to the inner shrine grounds is also free.

We came due to purchasing the fukui fun pass, which allowed us to get the soba coupon and the 1000 yen happiring coupon. Experience: A decent albeit limited variety of restaurants serving local specialties, including oroshi soba. There were stores selling omiyage too, with a popup Pokémon store at the time of visit. Hits: We liked the food from amida soba and gaburi chicken. Miss: slightly small variety of shopping. Tips: do note that you can only utilize the fun pass 3 "times", with the 300yenx4 soba coupon and 1000 yen coupon redemption considered 1 "time" each. If you're planning to visit attractions using the fun pass, we recommend maximising the value by redeeming the 1 day echizen rail ticket (1700 yen worth), followed by the aquarium (1500 yen worth), before considering the mall coupons, and the soba coupons only if you're ok with eating soba 3-4 times.

This is quickly becoming Fukui City's centerpiece. There are a lot of restaurants and attractions inside, but the best place is the terrace just outside, in front of the station. Located near Fukui Station, the Sakaenoyashiro Shinto Shrine is a delightful place to take a leisurely stroll. The shrine's picturesque surroundings also offer opportunities to observe pigeons being fed within the grounds. Exploring the area further, visitors can also discover remnants of Fukui Castle, making for a fulfilling outing.
Went their for a New Year's visit (hatsu moude). Impressed with beautifully presented origami paper cranes. Many kind of omikuji (fortune-telling slip) & omamori (good luck charm) were there for us to purchase. Handy from Fukui Station, probably around 15 minutes on foot.

This shrine was a unique blend of tradition and vibrant expression. Located in the middle of Fukui city, it offered a rare contrast between serene spirituality and striking color. As I approached, I was immediately captivated by the massive display of senbazuru—hundreds of thousands of folded paper cranes—arranged in radiant rainbow waves. It’s said to be 250,000 cranes in total, and the visual impact was both powerful and moving. This wasn’t something I would see at most shrines. The architecture of the main hall was refined, with elegant wooden details and gold accents, yet what stood out most was how lovingly it was adorned. The shimenawa (sacred rope) draped above the entrance felt especially meaningful, strung with paper zigzag-shaped shide, gently swaying with the breeze. Walking around the grounds, I was struck by the harmony between the spiritual and the urban—modern buildings line the view just beyond the shrine’s path, but inside, there’s a strong sense of grounding and calm. The path through the torii gate and up the stairs to the smaller shrine above felt like a quiet journey back in time😍

(Translated by Google) While it's within walking distance from the west exit of Fukui Station, if you absolutely must take the train, get off at the "Fukui Castle Site Daimyocho" tram stop. Take any train departing from Fukui Station on the Fukubu Line (Fukui Railway), and it's the next stop. To get there on foot, walk west along the north side of Chuo Boulevard, then turn right at the corner just before Phoenix Street. You'll see the torii gate and shrine grounds directly ahead. Until the Showa era, this shrine stood on flat ground west of the Fukui Castle ruins. In the Heisei era, it was rebuilt into a multi-tiered compound, transforming it into the grand shrine we see today. Its reinforced concrete architecture, unusual for a shrine in a snowy region, includes a parking lot accessible from the grounds below (there's a ramp on the west side for car purification services, pick-ups, and minor administrative needs), and the fortress-like grounds resemble a bunker, with the main hall facing south at the north end and the shrine office and assembly hall to the west. As a town that experienced a major earthquake shortly after the end of the war, the grounds are elevated with cutting-edge earthquake-resistant design. The roads are barrier-free, and there's a vertical approach via an elevator from the basement, making this shrine unique even in large cities. Needless to say, this shrine is the only one in Fukui Prefecture, and it's unlikely you'll find a shrine in the entire Hokuriku region that surpasses this architectural scale. Not only are these facilities modern and outstanding, but the number of offerings is unparalleled, with character charms a given and a comprehensive selection of wishes. Of particular note is the thoroughness of the offerings, which are even produced and distributed (free of charge). While Okayama's Okita and Kumano shrines and Yamaguchi's Kotozaki shrines are well-known for their offerings, the effort to create a catalog is unmatched by any other shrine. In addition to its prime location in front of the station, its convenient location near the prefectural and city halls makes this shrine like a department store when you're in a pinch for a wish. If you're driving, just head to the station—no directions are needed. Parking discounts are available depending on the amount of shopping or prayer you do. The Fukui branch of the nationwide Toshogu Shrine is also located here, and the talismans are decorated with the chrysanthemum crest. It's about 1 km by car from the roadside station Asakura, but a new Asakura family museum was being built on the way. Apparently it will open on October 1st. It's coming soon, so I'd like to go there next time. (Translated by Google) I went with a friend on Saturday, August 8th. I had enough time to go to the Asakura Museum in the new building, so before going to the museum, I went to the Asakura 5th Cemetery to hold a memorial service. We also held a memorial service for the fifth generation of Asakura. The Karamon gate is as splendid as ever. I feel the times. I was surprised and surprised that there were so many customers. My friend said it would be 3 consecutive holidays, so I thought, I see. And when the time came, I went to the Asakura Museum in the new building. I saw two exhibitions inside the museum and a special exhibition. The price was 1200 yen for adults. The museum alone costs 750 yen for adults. At the beginning, I watched the guidance monitor in the hall, and explanations such as Asakura, Oda, and the history of the war were flowing. And I went to the ruins exhibition room and there was a whole huge ruins in the room. I was surprised because this is quite big. Certainly, I thought that if I wanted to preserve such a huge ruin, I would not be able to save it without building a museum. I went to the second floor and there was a diorama of Asakura's castle town on display. I wondered why there was a touch panel around the diorama? ? When I tried to operate it, I was able to see the castle town era and the modern era on the touch panel. It was interesting because I could see the past and the future. The castle town is in the basic exhibition room on the second floor. What I expected from the newest museum was the full-scale reproduction of the Asakura Hall. This is the exhibition room that I was most looking forward to. When I went there, I found that it was very luxurious with the motif of Kyoto. Flowers were planted in the center. The real thing is not a flower. However, the flowers were made with Echizen Japanese paper. I wondered if it was difficult to make flowers with Echizen washi paper. It was a very beautiful flower. At the same time, the lord asked a friend to take a picture of him sitting on the tatami mat. Correctly, I was completely satisfied. Nyaha~ The special exhibition was about the history of the excavation of the Asakura clan ruins. After the Asakura family was destroyed by the Oda army, it was transformed into a field. Thanks to that, I thought that the ruins were left. After that, please go to the Asakura Museum in the new building. There is a cafe in the museum, so it's perfect for lunch. It was a very enjoyable day. I think I will go again. because it's local (Original)

The Fukui Prefectural Ichijodani Asakura Family Museum is a stunning attraction that offers a wealth of information in English. The museum features a miniature town and an impressive real-size replica of the Asakura residence, both of which leave a lasting impression. Additionally, the museum is situated in a beautiful natural setting with ample parking facilities. Tickets can be purchased with the option for extra visitation at 1200 yen per person.
What a beautiful museum!! There's information in English too. Miniature town and real size Asakura residence impressed me the most. Also it's a beautiful natural place with plenty of parking. We bought ticket with extra visitation, it was 1200 yen for 1 person. Really very beautiful, very informative place with very kind staff. I will definitely come here again! ❤️‍🔥

There were many interesting exhibits, such as a full-scale reproduction of the Asakura Mansion, a huge diorama of the castle townscape, and an exposed reproduction of the stone-paved ruins. This is Shibata Shrine, dedicated to Shibata Katsuie, a fierce warrior of the Sengoku period, his wife Oichi, and their three sisters (Chacha, Hatsu, and Go). Located on the site of the former Kitanosho Castle keep, this special place evokes the romance of the Sengoku period, familial love, and connections. Its easy access makes it a perfect stop for history buffs, as well as a perfect spot to stop by between sightseeing and strolls. The grounds are well-maintained, flat, and easy to navigate, creating a space that makes you imagine how beautiful it would be if filled with water. (Translated by Google) For tourists, the shrine is accessible from Fukui Station, but for those traveling by car, it's more visible and easy to find from Shironobashi-dori Street. It's been a quarter of a century since the old Shibata Shrine was rebuilt here, but it's located where Kitanosho Castle once stood. Excavations are apparently underway below, and the shrine grounds are built on a pier, creating an unsettling structure. From Fukui Station, exit the west exit, go around the base of Happirin Shopping Center, pass through the Galleria Motomachi arcade, turn right and head west on Kitanosho-dori Street. You'll see the Shibata Shrine torii gate and lantern on your left. Turn south from here and the shrine grounds are on the right. While cars can still access the shrine beyond the torii gate, the gate is quite narrow, and since it's a dead-end street, the space for a flagpole is privately owned, so turning around depends on luck. The tourist parking lot for shrine visitors is located south of Higashi Park, just past the Hokuriku Line overpass on Shironobashi Street. It's located at a distance that taxi drivers say is "extremely irritating" for both shrine visitors and museum visitors. During the harsh winter or during snowy or rainy weather, parking in such a place is a bit unthinkable for an urban sensibility. There are plenty of hourly parking spaces around the shrine, so it's best to park there. Entering the shrine grounds from Kitanosho Street, you'll immediately find Okonkon Shrine (the shrine grounds). The approach curves around, and to the left you'll see a statue of Oichi-sama, and to the west, the three sisters, lined up, facing each other on the east and west sides with the shrine of the Three Sisters Shrine (the shrine grounds) where the deities are enshrined. A stone wall surrounds and preserves the area. Further along the curve is the main hall of Shibata Shrine and the votive plaque corner. Turning west around the left side of the main hall, you'll find the gift shop and the museum. This extremely difficult, winding approach leads to the grounds of the former Kitanosho Castle (also known as Fukui Castle). To protect the area from visitors, the inner moat and earthworks are connected by a fence to protect the area. The railings around the fence are wide enough to allow for a good view of the castle ruins, but small children can slip through and fall off the footbridge (we witnessed a foreign child slip through three times in front of us), so it's best for parents to hold their children's hands for safety. The grounds are connected to Shibata Park, where you'll find the Fukui Castle Tower (deformed, so you can only view it; people are not allowed inside) and a seated statue of Shibata Katsuie facing Kyoto. As mentioned above, the parking lot is in a strange location, but if you'd like your car purified, you may be able to enter the grounds from Shironobashi-dori Street, so please ask at the shrine. It is thought to be dedicated to Shibata Katsuie, and on the premises there is also the Three Sisters Shrine, dedicated to Oichi's three sisters. However, even though he created the original shape of Fukui by building a castle along the Asuwa River and installing the Tsukumo Bridge, it seems unlikely that he would enshrine a military commander who was defeated in war and whose lineage ended in one generation as a living god, so I imagine it is meant to be a memorial for his soul. I was surprised to learn that Hirayama Ikuo was a descendant of Katsuie. He wrote the calligraphy for the ruins of Kitanosho Castle. The lack of a parking lot is unfortunate, but there are numerous paid parking facilities available near the station. Central Park offers expansive lawns, a small playground area, and even misting features. It's an ideal place to take a break when in the vicinity. The park underwent renovations in 2009 and now provides a charming space at the heart of the town where families can spend quality time together.

Located at the bottom of the Atagozaka staircase, the Atagozaka Tea Ceremony Museum is a small but elegant museum that showcases various items used in Japanese tea ceremonies such as hanging scrolls and tea cups. Visitors can also enjoy matcha tea and traditional sweets in a serene space within the museum. The entrance fee is affordable, and there's an option to savor matcha for a nominal fee.

History buffs (particularly art history) will thoroughly enjoy the Ichijodani Asakura Clan ruins. Therefore, we recommend that you visit it in conjunction with the newly built Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins Museum (with special exhibitions starting in March). The special exhibition also had meaningful content. *The washlet in the entrance floor toilet is out of order. *Maybe because it was Saturday, the parking lot was full, so I climbed Mt. A great little museum if you are into tea and read Japanese (or have the Google Translate app ready). The permanent exhibit (1F) is poster filled and provides an overview of tea cultivation & production across Japan.

The bus stop is "Asuwayama Koenshita," but if you're traveling by Fukui Railway, the closest approach is from the crosswalk north of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry tram stop. It's not too far to walk from Fukui Station; head west along the Asuwa River bank, cross Sakurabashi Bridge, and turn left onto Koen-dori Street, heading south. The approach to the shrine will be on your right. If you're driving, you can cross Sakurabashi Bridge, but the traffic light at Sanai Intersection is long and the road is narrow, so it's easier to turn left onto Kubomachi at Tsukumobashi Bridge on Chuo-dori Street, one stop ahead. The shrine's parking lot is small, but you can drive right up to the cliffs within the grounds. Head west from Aioi Intersection and enter from the left side of the slope leading up to Asuwayama Park. Coming up from Koen-dori, you pass through the torii gate and go up the stairs to find the main shrine directly ahead. The gift shop is located to the left and rear of the main shrine, facing west. A shrine maiden is usually on hand to sell the goods, and there are a ton of different types and quantities of gifts for wishes, so you can pick and choose what you like (a very experienced saleswoman). On the south side of the shrine grounds, Nishinomiya Ebisu Shrine is located as a branch shrine, facing north. The grounds are not particularly large, but the shrine enshrines Hachiman and Hakusan, and Takaokami and Kuraokami are said to be deities connected to wolf worship, especially in western Japan. The shrine's name, Keyaya, plays on the character for "keya," and the shrine also has a history of praying for the Black Dragon and flood control of the Kuzuryu River. The view when you get to the top is a little something, and I really like it. The Fukui Water Piping Museum is a historical structure from the Meiji era that showcases the history of Fukui's water supply. (Translated by Google) Visited on May 18, 2024. Admission fee is 500 yen, parking is free. When you enter from the main street, a narrow road continues. Daianzenji is a temple of the Myoshinji sect of the Rinzai sect, which was built in 1658 by Mitsumichi Matsudaira, the fourth lord of the Fukui domain, as the family temple of the Echizen Matsudaira family. The Echizen Matsudaira family was founded by Hideyasu Yuki, the second son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and Mitsumichi is Ieyasu's great-grandson. The main hall was undergoing major repairs during the Reiwa era, so it was completely covered. What was unusual was that you could see the inside of the construction site, and even helmets were provided. However, although you can always see the completed building, you can only see the work in progress now, so this is a valuable experience. The principal image is the eleven-faced Kannon Bodhisattva, which was created during the Heian period, but is in very good condition. Another highlight is the graveyard of successive feudal lords called Senjojiki. It's about a 15-minute walk from the main hall, and although it's not that far away, the slope is quite steep. There is a rose garden right after you start walking. It was the rose season (mid-May), so it was nice. However, from here on, the real slope begins, and the lingering feeling of roses is blown away. Also, the footing is poor and slippery even on a sunny day, so it's best to avoid it in the rain. When you finally arrive at the cemetery, you will be overwhelmed by the sight of 4m tall stone pillars lined up in an orderly manner. This stone is a famous stone of Fukui called "Shakudani Stone" and is mined from Mt. Asuwa. It is said that it came to be called Senjojiki because there are 1,360 cobblestones laid on the ground. The information board said that it was more luxurious than the tomb of the Tokugawa shogunate. The temple's pamphlet also states that it is ``Japan's No. 1 mausoleum,'' so it's definitely worth a visit. However, people who lack exercise need a lot of energy. I thought it might be a little bland, but perhaps the vegetable broth and other seasonings were well thought out, allowing me to really enjoy the delicious vegetables. The portion was just right. I was about 80% full (personal opinion). After the meal, I headed to "Senjojiki," the tomb of the Fukui feudal lord. The distance was about 400-500 meters, but the steep slope took a toll on my energy, and I was out of breath by the time I arrived. Be careful of the "a little further" sign (lol). Nestled near the ruins, Fukui Shrine stands out with its unique architectural style reminiscent of 1960s Soviet design. This concrete shrine may not fit the traditional mold, but it offers a captivating experience for visitors. The long and low torii gate is particularly striking, creating an impressive backdrop against the large ginkgo tree and guardian dog nearby.
I went here on January 2, 2025. There was no body in the shrine during my visit. I specifically want to get the dinosaurs Goshuin, so here I went. They have a lot of design available for you to choose from! I wanted the triple Fukuiraptor set and it costs ¥800. Surprisingly, it didn’t take a long time to get my stamp. No wonder, as the main deities are enshrined here: Hideyasu Matsudaira, the founder of the Fukui domain, Ieyasu Tokugawa, the first shogun of the Edo shogunate, and Yoshinaga Matsudaira (Shungaku), the 16th lord of the Fukui domain. I had no idea that such a historic place existed in Fukui. Many Goshuin stamps have beautiful designs, so it can be confusing. Fukui is now stamped with the Goryu seal and can be seen everywhere. However, even though it was a weekend, there were not many people around, giving the impression that it was a very quiet shrine.

(Translated by Google) Located northwest of the Fukui Castle ruins, Fukui Shrine enshrines Matsudaira Yoshinaga, the 16th lord of the Echizen Fukui domain. This avant-garde shrine, which boldly innovates traditional shrine architectural styles, was certified as a "valuable modernist building" in 2022 by the international academic organization "DECOMOMO" for its straight lines, right angles, and flat slab roofs. This shrine is also famous for its unique and varied seasonal goshuin stamps, such as dinosaurs and pacific saury. The flat concrete torii gate has a bold and cutting-edge design that makes you feel intimidated at first, thinking it might be some kind of suspicious religion, but you can visit with peace of mind. In 1838, Matsudaira Nariyoshi, the previous feudal lord, suddenly passed away. In December of the same year, Matsudaira Shungaku, who had come of age at the age of 11, was given the name Matsudaira Yoshinaga by the Shogun Matsudaira Ieyoshi. His wife was Princess Isami from the Hosokawa family, the lords of Higo in Kumamoto. During the late Edo period, he played an active role as a mediator between the shogunate and the imperial court, so much so that the phrase "Shungaku above and below" was passed down. In 1890 (Meiji 23), he died of pulmonary edema. He was 63 years old at the time. Built in 1943 (Showa 18), made entirely of cypress. Completely burned down in 1945 (Showa 20) during the Fukui air raid. In 1957 (Showa 32), the building was rebuilt with reinforced concrete, resistant to air raids and earthquakes, by architect Naoo Igarashi, an assistant professor at Fukui University, who was particular about modernism. It is quite different from ordinary shrines. I asked for a red seal at the shrine office and chatted for a bit. I was told that the stone monument with the shrine name near the torii gate once stood southwest of the castle ruins, but was submerged in the moat due to an earthquake and later dug up. I learned that the shrine was located on a large piece of land and was of a fairly high rank. I was also shown an old map, which made sense. I was also told about the tour of the 39 "Goryuin" shrines in the prefecture, and left with a hearty thank you. It is famous for its colorful goshuin (red seals), and you can also have them written in your book, so those who like that will find it very appealing. The grounds are basically made of concrete, including the main building and the chozuya (purification fountain), so some people may not feel like they are at a shrine, but there is a sad story behind the fact that the main building and other buildings were burned down just two years after it was built during the war (Fukui air raids). The goshuin (red seals) were beautifully written, and the shrine staff were kind, so it was a very fond memory. The office can get crowded, so if you don't have time, it's best to receive it on a paper seal. The park features gushing water and a freshwater spring, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and reading outdoors. The Fukui Osagoe Minka Garden is an informative destination that offers insights into the traditional lifestyle and architecture of olden days. This place, also mentioned in a grade three social studies textbook, showcases ancient folk houses adorned with bamboo decorations for Tanabata festivities. Visitors can write wishes on paper strips and witness the illuminations during this eventful day, which conveniently offers free admission.
This might have been the best restored houses of old style japan that I have visited. Also, you can fully walk around. Go over the stairs. It is really beautiful. Although, I will admit that it’s not easy to access it.

I like it because it gives me the best feeling of what life was like back then. It's not as big as famous places, but it's packed tightly together, and you can really feel the lifestyle of that time in each house, so I can recommend it not only to people who like old folk houses, but also to people who like ancient tombs and castles. The thatched roof in the back was covered with a tarpaulin as it didn't seem like it had been taken care of due to a lack of budget, which is very disappointing. I hope more tourists will come and we can replace it soon. By the way, the entrance fee is 110 yen! It's too cheap, so maybe that's the reason.
