Waterfalls
Harajiri Falls, located in Oita Prefecture east of Mt. Aso, is a stunning natural wonder often referred to as the "Niagara of Japan." With a width of 100 meters and a height of 20 meters, these falls are included in Japan's list of 100 best waterfalls. The horseshoe-shaped cascade was formed from the eruption of Mt. Aso around 100,000 years ago and can be admired from a wooden suspension bridge nearby.
By far one my favorite places in Kyushu, I visited 3 times in total. The drive to this location is really fun. Road trips with university friends. It’s a free area to explore with a nearby restaurants and souvenir shops. Parking is free as well. It’s obviously countryside so the people are genuinely nice.
Mohamed B — Google review
The scenic view is amazing, and the waterfall is beautiful! They have a cool bridge and you can walk across the waterfall. There's also access to see it from the lower river.
Eric G — Google review
It's free, it's big, it's a sight. Unfortunately at the time I visited (July 7th, a week after the rainy season ended in 2025) it is less active and the flow was not so fierce. The location is actually also rather out of the way, so unless this is on the way to your next destination, I wouldn't recommend going out of your way for it. If it is on the way, then this is an easy recommendation. It's next to a very clean and neat roadside station with toilet facilities so it's really good.
Skyy S — Google review
Baby Niagara Falls of Japan with its own charm. Easily accessible and can reach the bottom of the Falls for beautiful photos.

Worth the visit. Prolly spend about 1-2 hours exploring the area

A very beautiful waterfall formed from the eruption of Mt Aso iabout 100,000 years ago . It has a drop of around 20 m and width about 120 m . It also carried a nickname “ miniature Niagara Falls of Japan ‘“ due to its horseshoe shape . There’s a suspension bridge near by where you can watch the full view of the waterfall. There’s restaurant supplying good food near by and from the restaurant, there’s a path leading to the basin of the waterfall. Very easy assessable by car . A very magnificent place to spend a few hours .

Beautiful waterfalls. Great place for photography and drone shots. There is a bridge also. You can enjoy the view from the bridge. Washroom and free parking available.

Oka Castle Ruins, located in Oita prefecture, Japan, is a historic site with a rich history dating back over 800 years. The castle offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and is particularly popular during cherry blossom season. It is listed among Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots and is considered one of the top ten sakura spots in Kyushu due to its historical significance and visitor experience quality.
When you visit the volcano of Aso or Yufuin Onsen, this castle is worth seeing. It takes just about an hour of driving from those places. I recommend you to visit this castle in early April so that you can enjoy the tricolor of sakura, lawn, and rapeseed. It's so beautiful!

(castles visited: 60+) One of the best castle ruins I have visited. (I drove). The parking was easy to find. Easy to understand map and information (you would be surprised how many castles locations have next to no or terrible information, maps, and impossible to find parking). This castle was up in the sky. I felt a millions miles high. You couldn't hear the highway below or the city. But see Aso-san 100km away. I could have spent all day up there. It is just castle ruins, mostly foundation, but it's still mind boggling how they haul this stuff up and build on these mile high sheer cliffs. Getting even a few feet to the edge triggered my very mild fear of heights. This was a really amazing complex back on it's prime. I just couldn't imagine what it would have been like back in Edo.

Visited in spring and had a wonderful time! The ruins are nestled atop a hill, with spectacular views of the surrounding area. It’s such a peaceful and relaxing spot.

Interesting place if you have time to spare. Huge area where you can see nature(trees) and human (structure) are fighting.
Fitrah — Google review
Probably the best castle ruins in Japan. Not just the view but the grounds, how they are laid out and how they are left in a wonderfully ruined state. I could feel how this inspired one of the most famous Japanese songs, by composer Taki Rentaro whose house you can visit in neighboring Taketa which is a nice example of a small Japanese town. The grounds will take time to walk, at least an hour. There's no gate so go before or after opening hours to avoid the fee. The parking lot also stays open.
Tyler S — Google review
This place was so amazing. The ruins are beautiful, and the free app you can download is perfect for discovering the history of the ruins. The staff was really nice and tried to talk to us even though we didn't speak very good Japanese. I lost my glasses there and they sent them back to my place in Tokyo when I asked them to! I'll remember those castle ruins for a long time.

Bodies of Water
Nestled in a serene landscape, Hakusui Dam is a captivating sight that enchants visitors with its unique charm. The dam's surface has been intentionally left rough, creating countless tiny steps that generate the mesmerizing white water cascades for which it is named. A visit to this tranquil spot offers not only stunning views but also the soothing sounds of flowing water, reminiscent of delicate lace curtains dancing in the breeze.
Peaceful place.

(Translated by Google) Apparently it's nicknamed the Queen of Dams. I felt that its beauty was worthy of that nickname. It was apparently built in 1938. I think it's a work of great design. (Translated by Google) August 31, 2025 The scenery was so beautiful I couldn't help but gasp when I saw it. It's no wonder it's been designated a National Important Cultural Property (Oita Prefecture Modern Heritage). The restrooms in the first parking lot were very clean. I learned that the facility won the Good Design Award in 2011. I relied on Google Maps to get there from the Kumamoto area, but the only really narrow roads I found were just before the dam. On the way back, I headed towards Taketa City, which was a winding mountain road. However, it seems that buses also run on it. I thought I'd have to go through more of a mountain path, but that wasn't the case and it was actually a fairly easy path to walk on. I went on a hot summer's day, but the beauty of the dam made me forget the heat and I could have looked at it forever. If you want to take photos or videos, it's best to visit in the morning to avoid backlighting. The photos and video shown were taken just after 11am in August. Nestled in the heart of Sapporo, Nakajima Park River Pool is a delightful oasis for families seeking fun and adventure. The park boasts not only a spacious pool but also an exhilarating waterslide that promises endless enjoyment.

The spring water was very cold, so she thought it would be too cold to go in during rush hour, so she went in with wetsuits. My second daughter went in without a wetsuit, and soon she said she was cold... The weather was sunny, but wetsuits were necessary haha. There was not only a pool, but also a slide, so we had fun. There was also a shallow pool for small children, which was great fun. We also had a great time catching loaches and small fish. Even though there was a line, everyone was skating in their own style (standing and skating is prohibited), so I didn't have to worry about waiting at all! I'd like to take him there every year if it's nearby, but I'm too far away... However, it has become one of the rivers I want to go to even if it takes time. (Translated by Google) An annual event. The river water is cold and very clear. It's a great play spot in the summer. This year, I stopped by with my son's soccer club members on the way home from a game. At this time (July 2025), the parking lot is full, so cars waiting to enter are lined up on the road. A tip is to keep the river pool on your left while driving in the lane. If you keep the pool on your right, you won't be able to enter the parking lot, and you'll end up lining up at the end of the left-turn lane line. It's efficient to have the children change clothes in the car and head to the pool. The pool is free to use. Parking is 500 yen (cash only). It's a space where you can play in a place with a moderate shallowness and a gentle river flow. The water slide (free) is popular, and everyone, regardless of age or gender, slides down with a smile on their face. I don't know the people sliding down, but watching their smiles makes me happy too. Swimming naked will get boring, so I recommend bringing a swim tube as it adds to the fun. There is a campsite on the opposite bank but I have never used it. You can enjoy yourself to your heart's content in the free space. A little upstream is the Tarzan diving point. A little further upstream is the rock diving point. The riverbank near Tarzan is shallow, but it gets deeper on the other side, so be careful. The river water starts to get cold from around 4pm. That is when it's time to leave. The traffic jams are probably a nuisance for locals, but it's a place I would definitely like to continue using. The water is clean, and I think that's thanks to the locals' good management (it would have been perfect if the shallow pool for children had been a little cleaner). The water slide (it's straight, but it went pretty fast. Everyone seemed to be having fun sliding down it, having fun together in a friendly atmosphere). The natural river has a fast current, and the girl in the swim ring was in danger of being swept away. (There was a rope downstream, but I thought it might be for people who got swept away to catch on to.) I hope there are no accidents. m(_ _)m (Original) m(_ _)m

Nestled conveniently on the route from Takehiro to Beppu, Tomosyu is a charming little gem that offers an authentic taste of Japan. With soothing jazz music setting the mood, this cozy eatery serves up delightful dishes like their Kuju set featuring fresh sashimi, crispy karaage chicken with mayo, and inventive unagi. The attentive staff, including the proprietor's daughter who speaks excellent English, ensures a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Amazing service, amazing food. Thank you for a great experience! An address for the books. The staff was so attentive to us and our little handful daughters.

We had the ozen set and also an extra nigiri set after a long day. The food was absolutely delicious, and the waitress so sweet and willing to entertain our mediocre Japanese. The chef even crafted cute bunny nigiri for us, we were incredibly touched. The service and atmosphere were impeccable. Would go again.

A bit disappointing as I tried the local trout dish that comes in 3 different ways, the tempura fish was good, the salt grilled fish okay but the sashimi was cut in such a way that there was lots of bone in it, so it wasn't easy to eat it at all while avoiding the bones. There was also very little meat on the fish since they are so small. It was interesting to try a local speciality, but I wish I had tried their other dishes instead now The staff were kind and one spoke fluent English

This is a 140-year-old restaurant that serves very authentic Japanese dishes. The quality and freshness of all ingredients in each dish are superb. Mina, the daughter of the chef (owner), can speak English very fluently. She was very nice, friendly, and helpful for non-Japanese speakers like us to enjoy the experience in this restaurant. We tried the fish set that comes with 3 different cooking styles: sashimi, grilled, deep fried. It was really really good. We also tried their 20-piece sushi dish that was also delightfully delicious. The way the chef cooked could bring out the aroma and flavor of all ingredients in the dish. It was so satisfying. I couldn't recommend this restaurant enough! If you happen to pass by this small town, this place is a must to visit! They have lots of Japanese famous people visiting this restaurant too from what we saw all the signatures around the restaurant. Their Ponzi sauce is homemade and it's the best ever!! Also, try their brown rice ice-cream. It will blow your mind. It's worth your blood sugar rise!

Day 2

North side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the north side side of town. Start the day off with Lamune Onsen, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Makinoto Pass Trailhead (Mt. Kutsukake). All together, your day would be filled with about 11 hours of non-stop fun.

Day-use onsen
Spa
Lamune Onsen is a small and stylish hot spring facility that offers a unique experience with its carbonated communal bath and an art museum. Upon arrival, visitors are welcomed by a cat and can purchase entry for 500 yen. The indoor bath provides the typical hot spring experience, while the outdoor bath at 32 degrees Celsius features interesting bubbles on the skin. Additionally, there's a sauna available for use. For those seeking privacy, private onsens are also available at an extra cost.
Such a unique experience, the onsen would be perfect for summer as it is only about 32°C and not the hot ones. (There are, however, hot ones provided too, without the ramune bubbles) The place is very cozy and homey, nice wood vibes and mellow light. The owner has a cat 🐈 too~ The onsen was very unique, unlike any other we've experienced. The bubbles really feel like we're sitting in ramune🥤~ Instructions are mostly in Japanese, and staff doesn't really speak English, but friendly nonetheless. Try dipping your face (just your face and not hair and etc.) into the water while in the ramune onsen! Despite the cool temperature, you will feel warm in your eye socket and upper lip area! (Apparently, that is due to your blood running or something!) We stayed longer than expected! 😆 Fun experience.
Miu A — Google review
This onsen is part of Naga Yu which is known for its tepid waters. Some people prefer this and contrasts with Beppu which is generally ridiculously hot. The building is kinda funny and cute on the outside. On the inside it has a cave like encrusted vibe to it. I think a lot of this has to do with deposits from the water maybe. The outside bath is the main one and it's tepid and carbonated. It's quite nice though cos you can stay in it for ages and ages. The showers are pretty basic and could do with renovation but they get the job done. Unusually they only have standing showers. The sauna felt like a bit of an afterthought, it didn't even have tiered seating and the lighting was a single fluorescent bulb in the corner which doesn't exactly put you in a chill state of mind.
Louis S — Google review
The cat welcomed me upon arrival. 500 yen for entry and I bought a small towel with their distinctive logo at 300 yen. The indoor bath was hot as most other onsens, around 40 deg. The outdoor bath was only 32 deg but it was interesting to see bubbles all over skin. A bit crowded but worth the visit. There was also a sauna. People tried to talk to me but it's pity I couldn't speak their language. There was also private onsens but you have to pay more. I also tried the drinking source. It's a little sparkling and sweet.
Info W — Google review
Come to this place not for onsen but for the unique and fun building, also there's some interesting exhibit on the second floor. Preferably visit here in late afternoon to have soft light for photography.
Roger T — Google review
Fun place to go and chill for 1-2 hours. Carbohydrated open bath which at 32 degree can make you feel cold at the beginning but as long as you stay, you feel warmer with better skin. Use of soap (shampoo/body soap) is not allowed near the bathtub but you can shower yourself in the nearby sauna room. I love their onsen illustration a lot and got myself a t shirt at 2000yen. I would not recommend to try their coffee and it was kinda tasteless...

Loved the bubbles and and you can drink this bubbly hot spring from a tap in the garden, that was awesome! It’s like drinking a warm Perrier water ☺️

Lightly sparkling onsen! This was a very nice detour and probably worth a trip on its own. The water is very comfortable and feels a bit odd, almost slippery. The hosts are nice and helpful for those who don't understand japanese. Towels can be either rented or purchased.

(Translated by Google) I hiked as far as I could from the Makinoto Pass trailhead to the Kuju Mountain Range! I stayed at Hokkein Onsen Sanso! The autumn foliage on Mt. Ofuna and Mt. Mimata hadn't yet turned red. Many of the Kuju Mountains' trails are made of black soil, making them slippery. The paths between the black soil and the Miyamakirishima cherry trees are also often narrow, and in places branches overhang the path, so please be careful. Trail markings are sparse, so a map app is essential. There was plenty of signal in the mountains, and I was able to communicate via LINE. Be careful, as the overgrown Japanese pampas grass obscures the path. There are also occasional rocky areas, and trekking poles can get in the way. Gloves are also useful for warmth and safety. I started the hike on October 23, 2025, at 5 a.m. (around 8°C in the early morning), but it's easy to get lost in the pitch black around the summit of Mt. Kutsukake. I tried sleeping in my car the night before, using a summer duvet, but I woke up in the middle of the night because it was so cold. The daytime temperature ranged from 18°C to 14°C. I sweat a lot, so a T-shirt and arm covers were fine. When the fog came in, the temperature dropped, so I put on a jacket. This was my first time climbing the Kuju Mountain Range, and I thought it was a wonderful mountain full of adventure, with the peaks packed tightly together. I'd like to climb it again in June. Makinoto Pass Trailhead, located at an altitude of 1333m, is a popular starting point for climbing Mt. Kuju and exploring the famous peaks of the Kuju Mountain Range. The beginning was paved and easy, but the slope made it the most arduous part of the hike (lol). A little further on, the path turned to gravel? or stone?, passing Mt. Hosho and heading towards Mt. Kuju. There was a Kuju Fork Hut (100 yen toilet) where you could use the restroom. The views from here were great, with a glimpse of the Five Peaks of Aso (2 hours to get here). Arriving at Oike, I took a breather. There's a trail to Tengu Castle next door, but it might be a challenge for those who don't like heights (you can also go around to the right from Oike, which is easier). The slope was steep and the path was narrow, but the views were great. After that, if you headed up Mt. Kuju next door, you might find yourself surrounded by rugged rocks (lol). There weren't many places to relax. I left just after 6 AM and returned by 12:30 PM, but as expected, the descent is slippery, so be careful (I fell). And most importantly, while experienced hikers might be fine, it's cool in the morning, so water isn't really necessary. On the way back, it was hot! There was no shade! So one plastic bottle wasn't enough. (I almost cramped my leg.) Be careful in August, the summer.

Syokudo and Teishoku restaurant
Nestled along the serene banks of a river, 正直屋 is a delightful dining spot that perfectly captures the essence of traditional Japanese cuisine. After enjoying a rejuvenating soak at Ganiyu Onsen, I stumbled upon this charming restaurant, which exudes an inviting Showa-era ambiance. The menu boasts an impressive variety of dishes, including unique offerings like soft-shelled turtle and freshly caught fish served straight from their tank.
An unimposing place with yummy homemade dishes. It is located next to a Shinto Shrine and about 100 metres from Ganiyu Onsen. After a soak in Ganiyu Onsen, we ordered 2 set lunches - an Ayu fish dish cooked in three different ways and a sashimi and fish head soup. I particularly like the sashimi and salt bashed baked Ayu fish.

(Translated by Google) I had decided to eat at this restaurant for lunch while walking around Nagayu Onsen. After all, I like the name. Isn't it said that a name represents a person? First, I had a bath at Gozenyu, and when I saw this restaurant along the river for lunch, I thought it was just as nice as I had imagined. When I entered the store and looked at the menu on the wall, I noticed that it was expensive! Probably the best selling item is the Honest Shop set meal for 2,800 yen! expensive! I was surprised at first because I had assumed that an honest family would be serving a simple set meal made with wild vegetables at a low price, even though it looked plain since the hot springs were relatively unassuming for a tourist spot. I always thought that I wouldn't be so stingy when I was traveling, but I was wondering what it would be like to spend nearly 3,000 yen on a lunch set with unknown ingredients...When I started thinking about changing restaurants, I remembered that there weren't many food shops around here to begin with. I ordered the ``Karaage Set Meal'' for 990 yen, although the contents were probably a little disappointing. Since I was on such a special trip, I was wondering if I should have at least ordered the 2,170 yen free-range chicken set meal, but when the meal was served to me, I was told, ``Please wait.'' oh! This looks so delicious! 🤩 Visually, I thought there would be 3 or 4 pieces of extremely ordinary fried chicken, but instead I saw bone-in, skin-on thighs fried to a golden brown. As expected from the Chicken Kingdom, Oita! I was like, ``Hmmm, tell me quickly~ It's amazing, but now let's eat.'' Yummy 😋 Well, you can't really eat this in Tokyo. I wanted to drink a lot of beer, but I had to hold back because I was going to go on a hot spring tour. If it's this delicious, I'm starting to get interested in the set meal team that costs around 2,000 yen. I really liked Nagayu Onsen itself and will definitely come back to eat there again. Thank you for the meal! When I asked a child (or what?) where the restroom was, they asked me "How many centimeters tall?" When I answered "182 centimeters," they said, "That's huge!" The menu is extensive. Everything is appealing. This time, on a friend's recommendation, I ordered "Soft-shelled Turtle Hot Pot + Rice Porridge" and "Flamingo Hagiwara Segoshi." ●Soft-shelled Turtle Hot Pot The liver? The eggs were small but rich. The hot pot was lightly seasoned. I added yuzu pepper to change the flavor. This was my first time eating soft-shelled turtle. The texture was like collagen jelly. Soft-shelled turtle has long been said to have nutritious and healthy properties, but when I tried it, I didn't notice any difference. ●Rice Porridge I was asked to leave a third of the rice and soup, and when I called them over, they offered me a complimentary "Shall I add a little more rice?" The staff member who brought me the rice porridge said, "It's hot! It's so hot it'll melt your mouth!" I was surprised! I made sure it had cooled down before eating it. ●Flamingoha Segoshi The head was still moving, so it looked alive! River fish sashimi The delicate texture, almost boneless, lingers until the very end. The freshness was undeniable. Nestled away from the hustle and bustle of the main street, 鶏家 offers a serene dining experience that chicken lovers will cherish. On my first visit, I was captivated by the tender meat that truly showcased the natural flavors of chicken. The atmosphere is inviting, making it an ideal spot to savor delicious side dishes alongside perfectly seared chicken. During my return trip—after a previous closure thwarted my plans—I arrived early with eager anticipation for their renowned tataki and raw liver.
Unexpected visit. But was on the way from Kuju flower park back to Yufuinn. The fried chicken wing is outstanding. The grilled local chicken is pretty good as well. had Japanese chicken rice, and that's decent. Definitely recommend if you are in the area, and remember to order more of the fried wings!

(Translated by Google) Charcoal-grilled local chicken cooked to rare perfection. At first, I was a little worried about whether it would be okay to eat it rare, but when I tried it, I was surprised at how delicious it was. It was the best charcoal grilled chicken I've ever had. The portion size is not as large as it looks, and it is not greasy and light, so it is a bit disappointing for one person. It's not too heavy and delicious enough to feed 3 people without rice, but because of the price, I recommend eating it with rice. When eating with rice, it is even more delicious if you mix a lot of chili sauce into the skein and dip it in. The fried chicken wings labeled as karaage are also very delicious. Even though I'm not a fan of chicken, I still felt lingering after sharing a plate of this, so I ordered more and devoured it in no time. For two adults with an average meal size, 3 servings of charcoal grilled chicken + rice. Or 2 servings + 1 serving of karaage + rice. I think it would be perfect for a meal if you ordered it like this. If there are two people who eat a lot, eat 4 servings of charcoal grilled chicken + 2 servings of rice, or 3 servings + rice + 2 plates of karaage. Hiking area
Scenic spot
Kusasenrigahama is a serene grass-covered plateau in Japan, offering picturesque paths and stunning views of Mt. Aso, the country's largest active volcano. It serves as the starting point for a relatively short hike to Eboshidake, which takes hikers through wild volcanic scenery. The area also provides horseback riding opportunities amidst its lush greenery and features a volcano museum.
This place offers a truly lovely resting area, where you can find a spacious expanse of grass. It's heartwarming to see the horses roaming freely around the area, adding to the charm of the surroundings. The space is so vast that you could easily spend a couple of hours exploring and soaking in the beauty. While the winds can become quite strong during the winter months, there's something wonderfully surreal about the experience that you won’t want to miss.
Charles R — Google review
Absolutely stunning! Lush green fields and bright blue skies make this a must-visit photo spot. The view is wide and breathtaking — perfect for nature lovers. The horses are large and beautiful, but also a bit intimidating. Some tourists were getting too close without caution, so please be respectful and keep a safe distance. A peaceful and scenic stop near Mt. Aso!

A beautiful expanse where horses roam freely. We came by after hiking around the nearby crater, and it was an easy walk around the greens in comparison. There's not much to be done in the area to be honest, but enjoying the peace and beauty of the scenery ought to suffice. Paid parking is at the main area, but there's also limited free parking on the higher ground – turnaround is pretty fast so we got a lot rather quickly.
Jonathan C — Google review
For me, it was definitely worth the visit! The scenery was beautiful and peaceful—even though we didn’t get to see the horses that day, the view alone made it worthwhile. There’s paid parking available, and a few restaurants nearby if you want to grab a bite while you’re there. A lovely spot to relax and enjoy nature!
V P — Google review
The two small lakes seem to be popular as a photo stop for tourists. But it is very pretty so I understand. Paid parking nearby with shops and toilets. Free parking a bit further away by the observation platform on the upper road. Personally I found it enough to just drive by slowly and enjoy the view, but if you come early before the people, I imagine it would feel very magical!!!

Jigoku Onsen Seifusou is a sophisticated hot spring inn located in Aso, Kumamoto. The inn offers communal indoor and outdoor baths, a restaurant, and cooking classes. It is known for its modern system and mixed bathing that is popular among young people. The open-air mixed bath features a 48-degree sulfur spring and a smooth mud bath. Both men and women are required to wear bathing suits, making it accessible for all visitors.
MUST VISIT!!! We visited the day-use public onsen. Works till 5pm. Crazy place, you sit outside in boiling volcanic waters, soil is shaking under you, you breathe fresh forest air and enjoy surroundings, deep yourself into a cold bath afterwards and repeat a few times! There are 2 facilities: common for men and women where they give you a swimming outfit for a small fee and a separate gender bath, we could not visit unfortunately. If you go up the hill from the onsen with your car, you can see wild deers :)

Amazing experience at this historic onsen that has been rebuilt. The bath is very special, with volcanic clay coming with the water, though the clay level is much less now than in some of the pictures during my visit. The highlight of the stay is our terrific Hanare room, the detached room. It is so spacious and luxurious and feels like such a wonderful and relaxing cabin to escape from the city. The meals were terrific and some of the best I have ever had in Japan and in the world. The Yamakudo dinner with the Aso aka ushi skewers were phenomenal and I have never tasted beef this good. The breakfast was also very complete and splendid and both meals were absolute experiences. The owner chef and his team were very welcoming, kind, and did their best to speak with us considering our limited Japanese. We felt very welcome and kindly treated at all times, and this is one of the best experiences we have ever had in a ryokan. Top recommended!

Absolutely loved staying here. The ryokan is a nice juxtaposition between the new and old. It is a 200 year old ryokan that was destroyed 7 years ago and was completely rebuild. The light wood is new and the dark wood is salvaged from the old structure. There is a single sex onsen and a mixed gender onsen. Both are open aired. The water composition is very good and the temperature is hot. pH is 2.8. You can smell a faint hint of sulfur in the air. It doesn’t smell bad. Just of boiled eggs. The food was really good. We had duck hotpot for dinner and it was delicious. The rice is the nicest I have ever eaten. Cooked in charcoal and every grain is delicious. Breakfast was also yummy especially the French toast with fermented Japanese butter which made it taste like Gorgonzola.

A really nice osen deep into the mountains. The private rooms smell rich of wood which is beautiful. 2nd night the owner cooked in front of us and shared his experiences alongside his amazing dinner course. They have private women and men’s public onsen. Private Onsen is also in the rooms. For mixed onsen ladies and men wear coverings which makes the experience much nicer. It consists of hot, warm and cold onsen it’s great for joints and very relaxing. If you can drive I would highly recommend this onsen

Daikanbo, a 936-meter-high mountain atop the outer rim of the north crater of Mt. Aso, offers breathtaking 360-degree views. Formerly known as Tomigahana, it was renamed by author Tokutomi Soho due to its stunning vistas. From this vantage point, visitors can admire the five peaks of Mt. Aso, the Kuju Mountain Range, and the Aso Caldera.
It's an easy, small path and track. When you are at the top. If you drive up, there is a very comfortable car park, toilet and a cafeteria that also sells all local goods. I highly recommend it to anyone who comes here with a family because the loop for the trail is really easy. The view is magnificent. The parking lot was large, and I could see cows on the hill in front of me. After paying the 500 yen entrance fee at the entrance, I entered the park, which was beautiful with lots of cosmos in bloom. There weren't many different types of flowers, and the hibiscus flowers had mostly withered. The park is large, and the trail leads down a slope. There were few signs along the trekking course, so I almost got lost. Naturally, the return journey is uphill, so going to the very back is quite tiring. But the many cosmos flowers surrounded by the mountains on the plateau was truly beautiful. Gorgeous waterfalls, great on a summer's day and a delicious local restaurant right by the carpark, this would be a great place to camp. I can't understand why it's not better known. It's a 600m walk from the carpark and restaurant, the first 300m is flat then the path goes uphill but is well maintained. The waterfall is free to visit and there's free parking and a toilet. Lots of maple trees on the walk up so must be lovely in the autumn. The restaurant and campsite is closed from January through March.

There are stairs and a steep climb, so it's not suitable for people with bad legs or those in wheelchairs. The teahouse has a lovely old-fashioned atmosphere with an irori hearth and serves soba noodles, somen noodles, and more. There is also free drinking water, which was delicious for my dry throat in the scorching heat. Just before Shiramizu Falls is the mother waterfall. Perhaps because it's close to the falls, the spray made it feel cooler than Shiramizu Falls. From here, you climb a fairly steep staircase made of stones to reach Shiramizu Falls. There isn't much space, but there are benches available. The last 200 meters are made up of winding stairs, which can be a bit tiring. The several waterfalls lined up side by side are spectacular, and the amount of water at the base, woven with countless white threads gushing out from cracks and holes in the rocks, is also overwhelming! It's surprising that there is such abundant underground water rather than river water, but it seems that there used to be even more. Another unique feature of this area is that you can get a close-up look at underground water gushing out from cracks in the rocks even on the way to the main waterfall. It's probably sparsely populated now, but it will surely be quite lively during the autumn foliage season. If you don't mind the time of year, it's best to go now. By the way, they were selling yamame trout bait, but I couldn't find any. Taki Rentaro Memorial Hall is located in the estate where the renowned musician Rentaro Taki spent his adolescence. The museum showcases various exhibits related to Taki's life, including handwritten music scores, letters, photographs, and images. On the way, you pass through the Rentaro Taki Tunnel, and songs like "Kojo no Tsuki" and "Hato Poppo" play automatically. He lived in many places due to his father's job transfers, but this place where he lived during his adolescence from 12 to 14 years old seems to have left a strong impression on him, and he seems to have visited Oka Castle many times. I walked around the Japanese-style room (there was also a violin) and it seems that he was from a wealthy family, and that's how he got involved in music. It was also relaxing to sit on the veranda and look at the garden view. After that, I put on my geta and went to the storehouse at the end of the garden (where his statue is placed) and watched a video that summarized Rentaro's life. On the way to the storehouse, we also visited a storage facility (?) made of stone. The video also talked about his real sister, and I felt that it was from that story that he wrote such a gentle song. I'm glad I came. 但馬屋老舗 本店 is a well-established confectionery store in Takeda. It features both a cozy café and a retail area dedicated to Japanese sweets. The specialty, Mikasano, is a delightful creation made from sponge cake-like dough enveloped in flavorful bean paste. Another popular treat is Kojo no Tsuki, which boasts a luscious meringue-like exterior encasing the same delectable bean paste filling.

Mount Sobo, standing at 5,761 feet tall, is a renowned mountain offering picturesque hiking trails and cliff climbing routes. Situated on the border of Oita and Miyazaki prefectures, it boasts sheer cliffs and ancient forests teeming with diverse wildlife. The Akebono azalea blooms from late April to early May, adding to the mountain's allure. Hikers can enjoy stunning panoramic views of neighboring mountains from the summit.
My friend and I climbed Mt. Sobo on 02/02/19. We were lucky to get beautiful, crisp, sunny winter weather that was perfect for a climb. Views from the top were breathtaking and you can see the areas of Oita, Miyazaki, Kumamoto and even Nagasaki on an exceptionally clear day. We saw a squirrel, plenty of deer and heard many more in the trees. Would recommend to anyone looking for a view of Kyushu from the skies. We started from the Kitatani (北谷山登口) trailhead, but the road to the start of the trail was shut so we had to park and hike for about 25min up to the real start. Note: there are no toilets anywhere in the vicinity. We did the climb up in about 2.5hrs and the climb down in about 1.5hrs (not including taking a break at the summit). Up and down we took the safer, less icy and steep course There was a map there with the trails and some info about them. (It recommends you not to take the 風穴 course in winter because it’s dangerous). There are 10 parts to the climb in 500m intervals labelled with numbers. 1-8 weren’t so bad but the last 1km to the top was quite steep and icy. Good climbing boots recommended. There was only a couple cm of snow on the mountain, which made the climb simultaneously more beautiful and more slippery. The trails are well marked with lots of signs, but make sure you check where you’re going because there’s many different paths. We aren’t very experienced hikers, but Mt. Sobo provided us with a nice physical challenge with very rewarding views from the top.

Ascended from Obira climbing track (尾平登山口) to the east on Highway 7. Took about 3 hours. Technically intermediate track that's well marked (at the time of writing Dec/2018) with ribbons tied onto trees every 5-10m or so. Some precarious portions along mountain ridges near the top, and some slippery ice at the top (at the time of writing, Dec) but they can be walked around. Great track for the intermediate hiker. Well worth trek up and down (or around!)

(Translated by Google) Although it is one of Japan's 100 famous mountains, it is located deep in the mountains and is not well known on Honshu. The hiking trail is a walking course, but there are few people and no toilets along the way. Once you reach the summit, climbing up steep ladders and cliffs, you will be rewarded with a beautiful view. Hirose Shrine, located in Taketa City, Oita Prefecture, is a revered Shinto shrine dedicated to Takeo Hirose, a notable military commander during the Russo-Japanese War. This renowned shrine attracts visitors with its annual event called Chikuraku, where enchanting bamboo lanterns illuminate the surroundings for three days. The picturesque scenery of this area provides a soothing experience for those who stroll around the town and admire the beauty of these lanterns.

A shrine that enshrines the god of war. Well, since Nogi Shrine is also there, I guess Hirose Shrine is also good, but I don't feel comfortable with it. That aside. The precincts at the top of the long stairs are a very nice place with a good view of Takeda's castle town. The autumn leaves🍁 were also beautiful. (Translated by Google) I hadn't heard of this shrine dedicated to Lt. Colonel Hirose Takeo until recently. It was built in 1935, and it may have been due to the historical context of the time. I first learned about the Lt. Colonel in Clouds Above the Hill, and I think that if there had been more soldiers like him, the future of our country would have been different. There is a memorial hall for the Lt. Colonel on the grounds. I visited here, and for the first time I learned that General Anami Korechika was from Taketa. There is a monument in his honor, with calligraphy by former Prime Minister Kishi Nobusuke. The shrine was formerly classified as a prefectural shrine. It is about a 10-minute walk from Bungotakada Station. (Translated by Google) 2025.4.27 After having lunch at "Takeda Marufuku", I got a tourist map at the ruins of Oka Castle, so I decided to wander around the castle town of Takeda and looked for a place where I thought there was a parking lot. There seems to be a parking lot at the shrine nearby, so I'll do my travel custom of "greeting at the local shrine". I arrived at Hirose Shrine. There is a shrine with the same name near my house in Hiroshima, so I feel a sense of familiarity with it. However, this shrine is a shrine where people are enshrined as gods, and it is not the kind of shrine that I would visit, as I like Ichinomiya and mythology. I parked my car next to the torii gate in a place that made me wonder if it was okay to park there, and started praying. In front of the stone torii gate is a bronze statue of the enshrined deity "Hirose Takeo no Mikoto", and after passing through the torii gate, I climb a long flight of stairs. When I reach the top, the shrine grounds are on my right. Looking back at the stairs, you can see that the approach to the shrine runs straight through the castle town. The grounds are larger than I expected, with plenty of plants and trees, and there is a woman tending to them. If you go to the left before heading to the main shrine, you can get a nice view of the castle town of Taketa. The enshrined deity, Hirose Takeo, served in the Sino-Japanese War and lost his life in the Russo-Japanese War, and was even called a war god. As can be inferred from the search for his subordinates that led to his death, he was a well-loved man. In addition to the enshrined deity, the spirits of those who died in war from the former Naoiri district, which includes Taketa City (now almost the entire area is within Taketa City), are also enshrined here. After paying my respects, I went to the office to receive a goshuin (stamp). However, there didn't seem to be anyone there, so I was about to give up and go home when the woman who had been tending to the plants earlier asked me, "Are you looking for a shrine seal?" When I answered, "Yes," she said, "Do you have a little time? I'll write one for you..." What! She was from the shrine? I thought it was a local person doing volunteer work. I'm very sorry. After waiting just a little while, I received a beautiful shrine seal. Thank you very much. As usual, I took a commemorative photo of the shrine seal and the main hall, and my visit to the shrine "style of travel" came to an end.

This shrine is a prefectural shrine and is well maintained. ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ▷Hirose Shrine was built in 1935 by people who respect Lt. Colonel Hirose Takeo, a soldier who died in the Battle of Port Arthur during the Russo-Japanese War. Hirose Takeo, a soldier who died in the Battle of Port Arthur during the Russo-Japanese War, was born at Takeda Chaya no Tsuji as the second son of Hirose Shigetake, a loyalist of the Oka Domain during the late Edo period. He played an active role as a "god of war." ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ There is also a museum. Since this is a shrine that enshrines a human deity, the person must have been quite accomplished. I have mixed emotions about this shrine, as I'm not the type of person who can stand to see things related to war, but I somehow understand that it must be the guardian deity of this town. In that sense, it makes sense that the shrine is located in a place with a good view. It was cold, but I was overwhelmed with emotion when I got there. 😭It was good. The shrine had a solemn feel and gave me a refreshing feeling. It seems that the background of the Meiji era remains very strong, and I felt a pure atmosphere that penetrated into my skin even without doing anything. It seems that the spirit of Japan from ancient times is packed in there, and before I knew it, I was worshiping with my back straight. You may become aware of important things that you usually overlook. Once again, I would like to thank my predecessors. The museum also has letters written by Hirose himself, as well as many photographs and documents, allowing us to get a glimpse of Hirose's personality. I really like the atmosphere of this shrine. If I were local, I would go there often. I also saw the town of Takeda on the way there, and the beautiful rural scenery was amazing. This is real! I wondered if this land was creating wonderful people. I didn't have much time this time, so next time I go, I'd like to have enough time to visit the shrine and then go eat at Sengokuya. First, we watched "Bungo Oka Castle Story" on a large screen... The history of Oka Castle and the explanations of the successive lords were explained in an easy-to-understand manner with manga, which was enjoyable. When purchasing tickets, we were introduced to the purchase of the "Castle Town Cultural Facility Joint Ticket", which we purchased because it was a great deal. The woman at the reception kindly and clearly explained the sightseeing spots and directions afterwards, which was really helpful. We went outside once and took the elevator to the former Takeda Manor (painter Takeda Tanomura) to see his works (it was a short walk from the elevator). Parking is free, and it was so hot... I was exhausted from visiting other facilities, so it was really helpful to be able to go back and take a break halfway through. The joint ticket is 800 yen per person. I understand what you're saying, but even though I apologized right away, she persisted and yelled at us, citing the fact that we were from outside the prefecture, and tried to force us to take her to the caution sign, which was really scary. It was. In the end, when I said, ``I'm going home...'', he spat and threatened again, saying, ``That's not the problem!'' and left while shouting insults at me. Are people from outside the prefecture prohibited from using it? What do you mean by yelling at him and threatening him even more after he apologizes? It was so terrifying that I can't really put it into words. If you are outside the prefecture, please be careful.

While I was walking around, a white-haired man wearing a name tag who introduced himself as the manager suddenly came yelling at me without even saying hello, which confused me a lot. It was very scary. According to that person, there is a set direction in which to walk through this park, and he is walking in the opposite direction. This is my first time using it, so I have no way of knowing. When I told him that, he got very angry and took me to the sign where it was written to check. It's scary to hear someone yell at you like that. We are people on the user side. Also, it didn't seem like they had any intention of listening to me, and I was suddenly told that I must be a stranger from outside the prefecture. Parks are places that everyone uses. It doesn't matter where you come from. I immediately called the person in charge of the town hall that operates the park and informed them of this incident. I felt that he responded very lightly, saying, ``I would like to share this with you.'' I would like to share this here so that no one else has the same bad experience. If someone involved has seen this post and can confirm in the comments section that they have taken appropriate action, I would like to delete this post. Italian restaurant
Nestled in the charming Taketa City, Osteria e Bar RecaD is a delightful Italian restaurant that promises an unforgettable dining experience. After a refreshing visit to the local onsen, I stumbled upon this hidden gem while searching for a place to satisfy my hunger. The owner skillfully crafts each dish using carefully selected local ingredients, showcasing his passion and expertise. Despite being busy on a Saturday, the atmosphere remained comfortable and inviting.
The server/bartender was very friendly and accommodating. In addition, the selection for alcohol is incredibly diverse. The meals themselves are thoroughly prepared and delicious. If anyone wants to enjoy a chill atmosphere, eat good food, and drink a wide variety of booze, then this bar in Taketa is the place to go.

After freshening up, I called an Italian restaurant in Kuju, but they were fully booked. So, while I was looking around, I found this place in Taketa City. I was hungry, so I ordered a variety of dishes. Vegetable salad, pizza, curry, Bungo beef steak... people tend to open up their wallets during the holidays. Although it has a strong izakaya feel, the food was delicious. Three generations of a family came and had a great time, so it's a comfortable space where people of all ages can spend time. The music playing was also nice. One of the staff, Kanai-san, who is from Saiki, enthusiastically promoted Saiki, telling me about its delicious ramen, sushi, and sesame udon noodles. My wife and I have decided to have lunch and dinner in Saiki in June. I wonder if we'll be sleeping in the car again? Also, next time I'll have to try some enzyme juice at the store. Tenjin Marufuku is a popular restaurant known for its reasonably priced and abundant menu options. Customers can enjoy dishes like ginger-grilled set meals and mixed set meals featuring toriten, chicken cutlet, and chicken nanban. The ginger-grilled sauce has a delightful scent of ginger with a moderately sweet and delicious flavor. Additionally, the chicken tempura is lightly seasoned with thin and crispy romo, while the essential flavors shine through.

Personally, they have the best fried chicken in the world. You can grab a seat and order on a ipad. The waiter will bring the food to you. Help yourself to some water and radish too. The portions of the Marufuku set meal and the S-type fried chicken set meal are a bit too much. Even an average adult male can barely finish the meal. I think the chopped chicken set meal is the perfect amount to eat when you're 90% full. All the flavors are delicious. You can change the flavor with salt, pepper, or ponzu sauce. I plan to be back. There are no seating instructions, so I just sat in an empty seat and ordered with the tablet. I ordered the chopped fried chicken set meal and the thigh. You can have more rice.
