Kagami ike pond is a stunning mountain-backed lake with calm, reflective waters and picturesque hiking trails. The surrounding Tokakushi Mountain Range and vibrant foliage create a mesmerizing scene, especially during autumn when the colorful leaves are mirrored on the lake's surface. Visitors can also enjoy the convenience of Kagami-ike Donguri House, a cafe restaurant located nearby. Accessible by both car and foot, this peaceful destination offers breathtaking landscapes for photography, particularly during morning or sunset.
Located in Togakushi area in Nagano prefecture. It is a beautiful lake in autumn hues.

One of the best views in the region. The lake with alpine mountains in behind are stunning. I want to come back in Autumn. Tip: there’s a very nice 55 minute woods hike in from the main road. Watch for the yellow trail line on the area map. Additional trails continue up to the Alpine cedars shrine areas.
Brock L — Google review
Truly worth to visit this lake. Very beautiful specially during autumn. In morning you can see various layers of colors and This is definitely hidden gem
Rohan P — Google review
Totally worth the walk or drive. It's peaceful and the trees look really mesmerizing around the pond. Best time might be around morning or sunset. Afternoon is just going to be really hot.

A truly beautiful lake. The water is a mirror and it is framed by gorgeous trees.
Yeo F — Google review
One of my favorite views in all of Japan. It’s difficult to come here when there are no clouds, but it’s a unforgettable view. You can eat some great Soba crepes here as well!
Noah S — Google review
Very beautiful place to go for a short hike. During late afternoon the light is great to enjoy the breathtaking landscape around it and take some beautiful photos. The hiking trail to get there is easy and with signs along the way to show the right path. It is also easy to go by car and there is a nice cafe near the lake. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Nagano.

Lake Nojiri Naumann Elephant Museum is a fascinating place to explore the history and culture of Arai. The museum showcases earthenware vessels from the Hida ruins, ancient folk art, and farm implements. Visitors can also marvel at the impressive life-sized Naumann elephant specimens excavated at Lake Nojiri. Additionally, near the entrance of National Route 18, there is a captivating life-sized Naumann elephant family with their babies, perfect for memorable photos.
Very quirky little museum . Cheap as well

This is a great afternoon stop for the kids. It is a little pricey but not too bad. Our kids loved the interactive area on the first floor. We ended up spending as much time there as the rest of the museum combined. The store has some nice little items as well.
Greg L — Google review
It is a very small, yet lovingly curated museum. The exhibition is thoughtfully arranged, and the specimens are in excellent condition. Particularly fascinating is the story of the elephant discoveries made by the German naturalist Naumann. Visitors gain intriguing insights into the prehistoric world: fossils, impressive bone finds, and— as a special highlight—an original, exceptionally well-preserved mammoth head make the tour a truly memorable experience.

Imori-ike Pond, located in Ikenotaira Onsen on the Myoko Plateau, is a small yet picturesque body of water with a circumference of 500 meters. The pond is renowned for its mirror-like surface that beautifully reflects the majestic Mt. Myoko on clear days. Surrounding the pond are lush wet plants and white birch trees, creating a serene and scenic atmosphere.
Very nice place with a lovely cafe. You can also join the snow hiking tour at 9am there.

I guess it wasnt quite Autumn yet so its quite a let down. The sky was also cloudy and gloomy so the pond wasnt as beautiful as i expected it to be

Do you hate Japan's hot, humid summers? Then this is the place for you to escape the heat! Beautiful views, a relaxing pond walk, or more strenuous mountain trails are available. There are plenty of parking spaces in different locations, though during the height of summer this is a popular destination. The information center has public toilets, a small museum, staff to answer questions, a wonderful seating area overlooking the pond, and quite a nice coffee stand with some baked goods. It is a very relaxing place to visit when the crowds are not in attendance.

Nice walking place. Visitor center has some neat science exhibits and a small souvenir shop.

Ski resort
Nestled in the stunning Myoko Kogen region, Myoko Suginohara Ski Resort is a winter wonderland that caters to skiers of all skill levels. With its well-groomed slopes and a dedicated snow park, it’s perfect for families and beginners alike. The resort boasts breathtaking views of distant Mount Fuji, adding to the picturesque experience.
We had two amazing days skiing here. Long runs and brilliant snow. Lift pass Q only busy at 9 when lots of people arrive and that’s the only time we queued. Once people are on the mountain there are no real queues ( this was mid week ). Great for all levels ( you can get your pass on line also which means no Q, scan you bar code, collect pass and off you go (WAmazing)).Usual places to grab lunch on the mountain or at the base
Martin W — Google review
Great ski resort, pretty icy conditions in the middle of March. Very empty on a weekday. The 8.5km ride from top to bottom is a good leg workout! Our instructor was a pro and very helpful to improve!
Akira — Google review
Love the nice long runs! Our favourite in the area so far, we were lucky to have powder snow for 3 days. Fantastic slopes for all levels. For snowboarders we suggest to avoid going on the way to the bottom as it gets very flat some walking is required before getting to the bottom lift to bring u up to the main chair lifts.
J ( — Google review
My favorite resort! I tried many of the Nagan area ski resorts and Suginohara is the one that I keep coming back to the most. Tree skiing is amazing, a lot of snow, long wide slopes to practice, and not crowded:)
Mindaugas T — Google review
Came here on a big powder day! It was powder everywhere even on a the groomed slopes. Most of the chairlifts were fast and working. Will come again!
Terence T — Google review
Long groomed runs were such a pleasure to ski down! The resort is big, so there were barely queues once we got onto the mountain. My favorite resort in Myoko - chairlifts moved pretty fast when there wasn’t wind and there was plenty to choose from for beginners to advanced skiers. The chairlifts with bubbles were helpful on days where it was dumping.
Janel L — Google review
Probably my favorite resort. I have been skiing in Japan for 17 years. This resort is modern with fast quad lifts and the gondola. The snow park is possibly the widest run in Japan. Huge powder runs. A cute little village section with some good local food. The only downside is the access.. really need a car to get out here
Andrew H — Google review
Good runs for all ski or board abilities, great views of surrounding mountains/Mt Fuji on a clear day. The park is one of the best in the area despite a few kooky features. Lifts are all quick with a good gondola taking you 3km up mountain. Restaurant options are good but not many vegetarian options available. The 8.5km run is great fun and will burn the legs of all skiing or boarding abilities

Naena Waterfall, often referred to as the Earthquake Waterfall, is a breathtaking natural wonder located in the Myoko area of Japan. This stunning waterfall cascades 55 meters down a basalt cliff into the Seki River, creating an impressive spectacle that resonates with a powerful roar throughout the surrounding hills. Accessible via a scenic trail and charming suspension bridges, visitors can enjoy a leisurely fifteen-minute hike through lush greenery and picturesque landscapes before reaching this magnificent site.
This place was really wonderful. Such a kind of natural beauty I have never seen before. You can go with your kids also.

One of the top 100 waterfalls in Japan if you are visiting Nagano must visit place. There is small trekking you need to do to reach the waterfall.
Ashish T — Google review
Really good waterfall, close from the parking. The scenery and view is wonderful. Worth the visit. You can also enjoy fishing and eat fresh fish roast it on fire.
Teofilo Y — Google review
Magnificent waterfall which can easily be reached by a short walk of 15 mins.
Christo A — Google review
The hike wasn’t that difficult. You will be crossing two bridges. A lot of children and elderly people were able to do it easily. If you want to swim I suggest you go during a sunny weather. There is no path going directly near the waterfalls. You have to go through the big rocks if you really want to go near it. If you are there to just take a picture and breathe in the beauty of the it then the waterfalls is worth the hike.

A beautiful waterfall located on the boarder between Niigata and Nagano prefectures. There is a large parking lot, and the walk to the waterfall is very easy. I recommend getting to the area before 10, as that's when many of the tour groups begin to show up. Very picturesque!

Kurohime Kogen Snow Park is a ski resort that offers ski lifts, a ski school, and a kids' play area with snowmobiles. In the summertime, visitors can enjoy flowering meadows. The park has wide runs and enough space for skiers and boarders alike. It is also beginner-friendly with its wide and flat courses suitable even for children to enjoy snowmobiles. Additionally, they have intermediate level slopes but are limited in size.
I arrived at Kurohime Kogen Snow Park about an hour and a half before closing with hopes of fitting in a couple of runs at the end of the day. It was extremely easy to buy a lift pass, and for quite a reasonable price, as well (I payed ¥3,800 for a 3 hour pass). Though there were only a handful of runs to choose from, all of the ones that I tried were very enjoyable. They ranged in how challenging and long they were, but I was able to hit every course at least once in that span of two hours. While some might argue that there isn’t so much to do at this snow park, I thought the experience was more than satisfying enough for me. I thought all the runs were perfect in length (about 4-8 minutes each) surrounded by wonderful scenery. Not to mention, the slopes were nearly empty this time of year! All the lift staff were very friendly and generous, with one even allowing me to ride just as it was preparing to close. At the end of my runs, I stopped at the little restaurant at the bottom of the slopes for a refreshment, and the one lady working there on Christmas was very friendly, too. If you’re in the area, I definitely recommend making a stop at Kurohime Kogen Snow Park. Fantastic fun on the slopes, and the view from the top is worth the price of admission alone!

Had a wonderful time. Nice base area with cafeteria. Reasonable rates. Nice high speed detachable quad. Good for beginners. Not very many trails. Awesome section for dogs to ski! They can take lifts!

Really cute mountain slope where you can bring your doggies to ride. Doggie watching is also fun! Simple short slopes with a few intermediates at the top.

Lovely ski resort, We went with our dogs, And it has nice indoor dog run as well. They loved its both inside and outside.
Faizan M — Google review
First time at a snow park with school age kids. We were not planning to do skiing but kids wanted some snow experience. Location is not far from the Nagano town and is good for day trip if you don't mind driving. The drove to ski park is relatively easy, better than expected. We spent about 3hrs at the family area park where the kids got to ride on a variety of snow mobile equipment. We took the ski lift to the top and slid down. Note that most instructions are in Japanese and we have to use google translate. The staff can't communicate in English too and hence need to use google translate too. This ski park seemed to cater more for locals as there were many elementary school kids on school excursion to the park. We rented 2 pairs of gloves as ours weren't warm enough..very pricey. Approx 2000yen per pair and they weren't warm either! Overall kids enjoyed the trip and it's inexpensive for the 3hrs use of ski family area
C T — Google review
The weather was really warm so it was perfect for sledding and building snowman but not so much for skiing. Nonetheless we had a lot of fun and the kids were entertained. The food is on the very expensive side but it was good and quick.
Wayne Y — Google review
We came here because they cater to dogs and even allow dogs to ride up one of the lifts and then run down the mountain! We enjoyed seeing the many dogs and friendly owners. The facilities are quite nice and the guests are primarily families with many more skiers than snowboarders. Unfortunately the old men running the lifts had bad attitudes and little concern for guests boarding or exiting the lifts. The old man inside the control room of the high speed quad was actually sleeping. Some chairs had exposed grass on the exit that could have easily been covered up. Other than when I boarded with my dog no one even held the chair as I got on. The lifts may as well have been unattended. Maybe it was just me, because I’m a foreigner or a snowboarder, but we will probably not return.

Decent place for beginners. They have a couples spits for intermediate levels but it's short. Overall great place for family.

Had a delightful dining experience at EIKA, a cozy eatery known for its delectable dishes. The restaurant may be petite in size but certainly not lacking in flavor. The cold Tsingtao brews were the perfect accompaniment to the superb meals. A return visit is definitely on the cards to sample their renowned ramen dish. With every bite, we were treated to scrumptious cuisine and received warm and friendly service from the staff.
The dumplings were excellent and we loved the vibe of the restaurant. The waiter was extremely welcoming and friendly towards both locals and visitors/tourists. We really enjoyed the spicy ramen and the sour pork as well. I highly recommend this cozy place for a nice warm meal.

The food was delicious - especially the karaage chicken! The owner was also very welcoming and gave us so many ideas of things to do in the area. I would definitely come back here in a heartbeat!

We visited during peak season (December) and the owner tried their very best to accommodate us even though he was very busy. The owner is humble and honest, and provides a personable quality service. Food was delicious and very affordable, especially for the portion size - would highly recommend anyone wanting to try Chinese for a little change in the area!

This restaurant is amazing. Fair prices and the staff is super friendly and accommodating. The food was amazing! I would call ahead on weekends and make reservations because they are one of few restaurants in the area. We kept going back because of the staff and food. I’d give this place a 10 out of 5! I rarely write reviews but they definitely deserve it!

Hot dang the food here is tasty. Suprsingly, the Ramen with Wantons was our favourite Dish, not what I would expect form a Chinese place but it was great none the less. Super affordable too, think we paid under 22,00 Yen for 2x mains and a side.

Great little restaurant in the Myoko area. Fills up with people quickly, so it's advisable to make a booking, but you might be able to get seats at the counter with 1-3 people. What a lovely and cute cafe with a mixture of both nature and simple delights. The staff was extremely helpful and patient. I loved the use of seasonal vegetables in the my pasta. Amazing restaurant and cafe, we had to go twice. Wonderful staff and a super cozy environment. The menu was full of options with reasonable prices. Vegan and vegetarian options available on the menu too. They have a wide variety of snacks and cakes to have with your meal or takeaway too. Probably some of the best food in town and the only one with western options. Didn't require a booking to sit in, but made one anyways. Last order is 6:30pm. We loved the Green Curry, the Spaghetti Bolognaise, pizza and most importantly the home made Apple Pie.

We've eaten here with the family (ages 30-80+) multiple times. The food is always excellent, with a rotating menu of different pastas and rice dishes. Food is served in a timely fashion, the owners are friendly, and the atmosphere is relaxed. We always think of it as the DIY Cafe, as the owner has obviously built many of the tables and additions to the restaurant. The views of the Japanese Alps are also quite spectacular. Both indoor and outdoor seating available and parking is adequate.

LOTTE ARAI RESORT is a premium mountainside retreat that has recently reopened after being closed for a decade. Nestled between Myoko and the coast, this legendary resort is renowned for its abundant snowfall, making it a haven for powder skiing enthusiasts. The resort offers refined rooms, impeccable service, and essential amenities such as complimentary Wi-Fi and parking.
One of the best ski resorts in the world! Nice and large rooms with lots of variety available for different price points. Lots of lounges to relax and spend time with companions. Amazing public bath with natural onsen and outdoor bath. Staff were polite and very helpful. Restaurants can be improved upon with variety and quality...
Que — Google review
We stayed as a group of 4 at Lotte Arai for 3 nights last weekend. The rooms are well appointed and comfortable but unfortunately the restaurant capacity does not adequately cope with the hotel guests. There was a queue at breakfast with many people waiting for a table at the buffet. We decided instead to get some breakfast at the bakery that had been temporarily opened and paid 4400 yen each. Unfortunately the food was limited and some items had run out and not been replaced. The coffee has also run out and only got refilled as we were leaving to go skiing. When we complained on checking out we were told “sorry” and not compensated for the inadequate breakfast. The cafe at the village station is not big enough to cope with the crowd and there were no seats inside the dining area. Restaurant bookings were hard to obtain in some of the restaurants. All in all a very poor dining experience for a five star resort. On the final night we were kept awake by a big group of guests in the corridor speaking loudly for about an hour at 1.30am. There was no response from management who would have clearly heard the noise in reception.

My wife and I had a great ski experience at Arai. We spent two days on the slopes and were blown away by the incredible Japan powder. For a short stay, the location was perfect. While there isn’t much to explore off the premises, the amenities were outstanding. One of my favorite moments was unwinding in the Cottage Lounge after a day of skiing, sipping a cocktail, and taking in the beautiful mountain view. The only downside was my experience at the rental shop. As someone who had never skied in powder before, I wasn't advised to rent powder skis, so I opted for all-mountain skis instead. While they were fine, given the deep powder conditions, I asked to swap them out after a few runs, especially since I had already paid for two days of rental. Unfortunately, I was told there would be an additional fee for the swap, which I felt should’ve been a simple exchange and was contrary to the exceptional service we experienced otherwise. On a positive note, the free shuttle to and from the train station was extremely convenient and easy to use (just make sure to make a reservation). Overall, it was a fun experience and I’d definitely recommend it.
Paul R — Google review
I came here in the summer to check out the place as I know I'll be visiting in winter (plus prices are fab in summer!) it has so many activities to do, it's really great for kids. I'd say you can easily do 2 nights here with the activities + onsen. I didn't book restaurants beforehand and it was fully booked the night I stayed so we drove down to Myoko to have sushi dinner which turned out to be fantastic. I booked the characters room too as I grew up eating it as a snacks. I LOVED it. Everything was so cute.

Service is awful - 30 min on check-in in off season, seriously? Breakfast: empty plates and you have to tell them to refill several times before they actually do. And it is 1.5h before breakfast time finishes. The staff is blind or what!? Dinner: 6000 yen for Japanese Shabu Shabu and sukiyaki each - it is a joke🙈 4 pieces of small meat and a lot of onion😂😂 Don’t waste money for this hotel - better find smth smaller and cosier.

Steak house service & menu very good. Breakfast choice is very good. The family room was comfortable. Swimming pool pleasant but disappointed to have to pay extra to use it. Bar drinks are expensive and beware of the table charge that is added to the bill. Overall, it's a good hotel, but I feel it is overpriced.

The exclusive Lotte Hotel in the resort area provides luxurious accommodation with amenities like an indoor 50m swimming pool, fitness center, shopping mall, ziplining, and over 10 onsite dining options. Amazing small ski resort. The snow and the slopes are fantastic. This resort exceeded expectations and wasn’t busy at all. However, the mountain is small with few lifts.

Great resort with ski in / out. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Onsen and massage facilities on site. Food options within the resort are limited and not the best
Faris L — Google review
Too expensive and too crowded! The lifts were not seated to capacity. Sometimes Only ONE person per car designed for FOUR people! And the first class lines moved quickly but everyone else (who still payed ¥7,500 for a day pass) had to wait in LONG, SLOW MOVING lines! Don't waste your money or your time. Ride elsewhere
Bryan B — Google review
Good for intermediate or advanced riders seeking powdery off-piste skiing or snowboarding. Not good for beginners
Ekapol T — Google review
The ski experience here was amazing. The courses are very well made, and are divided into categories based on the skill of the individual (beginner, intermediate and expert). The courses are made fair for everyone and are all well maintained. For some people, ski lift tickets can be included into the hotel price, but most will have to purchase one. There is also a gondola which can be used by skiers, as well as people who just want to enjoy the beautiful views. Ski equipment and cloths rental is also available.

Hotel is nice and cozy. Ski resort is perfect for powder lovers. Maybe not very beginner friendly but if you are an advance skier or snowboarder. I am sure you will love the powder snow here!

One of my favorite ski resorts in Japan! Awesome view, fluffy and deep powder! Great international ski school Myoko Snowsports!
DaHuZi J — Google review
Skiing in mid December There has been 100-180cm of snow but they still won't open most of the runs. All ski instructors believe they should be open with the amount of snow but nothing has opened up in 4 days we've been here. They haven't even prepared the lifts for these "almost open" runs. Unfortunately I get the feeling that it's to save costs by running only one lift. Pretty disappointed as some of us were hoping to learn (especially with the advertisment of so many green runs) and all that is available are some pretty challenging blues. I understand that a lot of this is condition dependant, but this feels like cost cutting, hence the review. That said, the 2 blues that are open are incredible, the powder is lovely, snow is dry and crisp, and the individual staff members are lovely. The lessons, while expensive, are good quality and cater to all levels. Attached is an image of the snow cam at the closed lift with no chairs attached

Akakura Kanko Resort

4.1
(908)
Ski resort
Nestled in the picturesque setting of Mount Myōkō, Akakura Kanko Resort is one of the oldest ski resorts globally and offers a range of experiences for skiers of all levels. The resort features beginner-friendly slopes, challenging ungroomed courses for expert skiers, and a snow park. The iconic Akakura Kanko Hotel provides a luxurious ski-in, ski-out experience with its vibrant red roofs and proximity to the slopes.
Akakura Kanko Hotel is a nice place to stop for a cup of coffee, lunch or just for the views while skiing at the Akakura/Myoko slopes. Easy access (ski in & out). Excellent food and deserts to die for.

Literally waited in the lift ticket queue for 1hour yesterday! (Monday From 9:45am to 10:45) Only one person taking payment, but 2 staff at ticket counter. Ridiculous. If you’re buying 1-3day tickets use the QR code advance payment option and skip the line up, but more online options need to be made available. We only wanted a 4 hour ticket and therefore had to line up. Resort itself was fine, no lift queues.
Terry T — Google review
Awesome snow sports area, tons of ungroomed runs. Will definitely be back.
E Z — Google review
A variety of runs. Awesome off piste area to explore and have fun in deep powder. There is also a kebab shop at bottom of Hotel 2 chair lift. Love the kebab there!
DaHuZi J — Google review
The better side of the Akakura resort with more challenging runs, better terrains and tree skiing, enough to keep you entertained for 2 to 3 days. However, despite Covid, the place gets very crowded over the weekend with long queue to get the lift tickets and much longer queue to get on the Gondola. There are less freshies to be found as compared to other resorts (despite no presence of foreign tourists) and hence, I will avoid this place once international travel is allowed. To get here, take train from Tokyo to Nagano station, and from there to Myokokogen station and get the hotel/ryokan to pick you up from the station. The Kanko resort is about 5mins walk to Akakura Onsen. There are also plenty of ski in ski out accommodations in this area.
Emma T — Google review
Great mountain but the queue to buy tickets in the morning is ridiculous. Other large resorts have already gone online, so no wait needed for pre-bought tickets, while Akakura is still paper based. This wastes 30 min of a ski day… for which we still pay for tickets. Please please put in automated gates and online purchase.

Nestled in the heart of Japan, Akakura Onsen Ski Area is a winter wonderland that caters to skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels. With 14 diverse courses stretching along a scenic mountain ridge, this resort offers ample opportunities for beginners to hone their skills on long, wide slopes while more experienced adventurers can revel in deep powder and thrilling tree skiing. Families will appreciate the ski school and dedicated snow parks designed for kids, ensuring everyone has a fantastic time on the slopes.
Akakura Kanko Akakura Onsen ski areas in Myoko are well groomed, long and not crowded at all. And together with nearby Suginohara it’s a magical place to ski and snowboard too. The local food is exceptional.
Katarina G — Google review
The ski resort is connected to Akakura Kanko which I would suggest purchase combines two mountain tickets else you will fill it too small for one mountain alone. There's a big flat space in the middle of the mountain where the restaurants are.
Kenneth T — Google review
It's a quiet "one street" town and at the tail-end of the ski season it's even quieter, seemingly populated by more Australian ski instructors than locals or even tourists. Food choices are limited and did not pass muster for the more discerning taste buds. Ski slopes are definitely very comfortable for the absolute beginner. Runs are relatively short and combined with the leisurely lifts makes for a very relaxed ski experience. It has gorgeous views and with a little bit of investment this town could really light up.
George L — Google review
(Feb 2025, weekday) + There's a nice long easy slope that is slightly toward the harder side for practice purposes and enjoyment - Commuting between slopes is a complete nightmare. A lot of flat ground, a lot of struggling - A lot of lifts are closed. Not acceptable considering that the lift ticket is quite expensive (6000yen/adult/day; ~USD$39)
Sam — Google review
A lovely ski resort perfect for beginners and low intermediate skiers. Advantages include wide gentle slopes and a charming small town vibe. Disadvantages are the longish traverses between lifts, which are aging and slow.
Ian B — Google review
This place is heaven. Getting the best snow in all of Japan, maybe even all of the world. This is my go to when taking a snow trip away from home. When there is enough snow this place is a big open playground. With plenty of lifts and runs to suit all levels of skill. There is plenty of accommodation choices and not so many restaurants. This mountain is roughly a 6 hour drive away from Tokyo. I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for an escape to the best snow possible. You need to visit during Jan and Feb for the best possible fresh powder available.
Chris C — Google review
One of the two historical ski slope located at the foot of Mt. Myoko. This gelande tends to be lower in altitude than the Kanko side but has nice runs in the trees and wide groomed slopes. The slopes are located wide along the mountain so there are quite a few flat traverse you need to do in order to get to one side to the other, but each slope tends to be pretty empty even on a Saturday. Nighter runs until 10PM but not included in the one day or the multi-day pass. Get the 1day passport or the nighter pass separately if you want to go long.

Jōetsumyōkō Station is a convenient transportation hub for travelers coming from Tokyo, with the Hokuriku Shinkansen providing direct access. The station offers amenities such as a bento shop, tourist information area, and JR Rail ticket booth. It serves as a gateway to the Snow Country and provides easy access to ski resorts during winter. The station is well-maintained with clear signage and multilingual ticket machines.
The sky widens here; the air tastes faintly of the sea. Jōetsumyōkō stands between mountains and water — a crossroads of weather and stories. The train hums through, leaving echoes of rain on glass. Tourist Tip: Gateway to Myoko Kogen ski resorts. Local bus connections from the west exit. Excellent winter destination with onsens and powder snow.

Station serving joetsu city. Very easy to get around and find a bus or rental car. During the winter the place becomes magical with access to ski resort. Pomodoro is a cozy pizzeria that offers an exceptional dining experience. The woodfire oven-baked home special beef pizza is highly recommended, with the quality of dough and ingredients being perfect. The funghi and prosciutto pizzas are equally delicious, and the gelato con caffe is a must-try for its perfect balance of bitterness and sweetness. The staff members are friendly, adding to the welcoming atmosphere.
We ordered the funghi pizza and prosciutto pizza and both were equally delicious!!! :) The gelato con caffe was perfectly bitter and sweet and amazing as well. Very cozy vibe, and all of the staff members were very friendly. Highly recommend!

This is going to sound exaggerated and ridiculous but their home special pizza (beef) was the best tasting pizza I've ever had. I have a woodfire oven at home. I've had really good pizza abroad e.g. Italy, Switzerland, etc. For for me, the quality of the dough and ingredients, their respective ratios, and the cook time, were perfect. The taste and textures were as good as pizza gets.

Pizza perfection. This little 2 man shop is a little slow but totally worth the wait. The guy behind the counter works the pizza oven like no other with every spare second being devoted to hand making each pizza crust. Menu has good variety, good prices and good value. Tried to go back again but we got in too late to get a table.

Ramen restaurant
If you're on the hunt for an authentic ramen experience, look no further than Omori Arai. This beloved local eatery is renowned for its Joetsu Tonkotsu Ramen, which boasts a rich and flavorful broth enhanced by the delightful aroma of wakame seaweed. The homemade noodles are perfectly bouncy, making each slurp a joy! With a menu that also features gyoza and rice dishes, there's something to satisfy every palate.
Do you want a real ramen experience? Delicious, filling food? Quick and friendly service? Get in and out and see how the locals do it? Then this is the place for you. The various ramen, gyoza, and rice dishes are all excellent and worth exploring. This place is filled with locals, so plan to go early or you will be waiting. However, they do have 1st and 2nd floor seating, and a massive kitchen so they get people in and out without too much of a wait. Servers are always friendly and you'll see the same faces year after year. This is real ramen at its best. Parking is free and there is room for probably 20 cars, but the slots are rather narrow and this really is the local hotspot so be careful if you don't have a midget car.

First of all, the soup...huh? ...Matsuchaya's is overwhelmingly better...It's not bad, but I had high expectations for the original...it's a shame. Noodles...The old Matsuchaya medium-thick curly noodles are good, but a little too soft. Char siu...This is the worst part. It's dry and flavorless. They put it in the soup to make the stock, but I guess they don't add it to the soy sauce seasoning...it's leftover meat. I don't understand why it's so popular...Do the people who give it 5 stars have any palates? I'll go back to Matsuchaya... Madarao Mountain Resort is a large ski area located on the border of Niigata and Nagano prefectures, offering 31 ski runs accessible by 15 lifts. It is known for its powder and freestyle runs, as well as a snow park. The resort caters to all skill levels, making it popular for families and groups. Additionally, it provides summer activities such as hikes and zip-lining.
We have just left and were in Madarao for ten nights and days. We LOVED our stay. The snow was awesome. For such a small resort the food was excellent. (You must book but that was not difficult) One thing to note: there is no ATM machine and you need cash for buses, and some food outlets. We found it very easy to get to other resorts for day trips.

Such a great resort. Friendly. Great piste and off-piste and tree runs. Well-positioned chairs. Some really beautiful tracks on Traverse and across into Tangram. Excellent variety for beginners and intermediate as well. Ungroomed blacks are very good. Now one of my favourite ski resorts.
William G — Google review
I have visited Japan 5 times now to different mountains for the snow. I have to say that whilst the snow is amazing Madarao is my least enjoyed. There is plenty of powder, tree runs, natural halfpipes and park obstacles but what let's this down is the prices and the overall vibe. First off all, there is no night life at all. Unlike Myoko and Niseko, Madarao is very limited and expensive when it comes to all things outside of the slopes. At most I would say there are max 10 restaurants (it may sound a lot, but they are open at various times and some only have a small dining area) available off the slopes which you need to book in days in advanced as to not miss out, prices for each meal would be roughly $30aud per person for a main and a drink. There are 3 little convenience stores with limited products and limited sizes (again quite highly priced). I found that if your not out in the snow this is a really boring place, I love the snow and even I couldn't wait to leave Madarao. There was one day on our trip that was a total white out, we found ourselves laying in bed watching movies all day with no other options. Myoko and Niseko offer more of a range for everything plus exceptional snow. Whether it's your first time visiting japow or a return trip, I would highly suggest checking out other mountains.

Wonderful spot for snowboarding and skiing for beginners and pro people. There are couple of courses to enjoy. The snow is so soft maybe which is often concern of beginners. Views are wonderful. I prefer the sky view. It’s so amazing.

The Madarao Mountain Resort is a quite big snow resort. It takes about 1 hour to get there from the downtown of Nagano city. There are various kind of slopes, flat and perfectly groomed slopes, steep and ungroomed ones, ski/snowboard park, and controlled natural forest areas for tree run. The resort offers a lot of fun for advanced skiers and borders, however to be honest it may not be the perfect place to bring beginners and kids. There is only a few slopes flat, wide and gentle for beginners. If you visit by car, car parks No.8 or No.7 are recommended. A deposit of JPY500 is required for a lift ticket, and the deposit can be refunded from the ticket office, if you park at the No.8. If you park at the No.7, you need to take the lift No.1 to get back to the car park No.7, you should NOT refund at the ticket office. The deposit can be refunded at the coffee shop in the No. 7.
Shige S — Google review
Compared to the size of the area the off-piste is very good, and the attitude to off-piste some of the best in Japan. Most of the lifts are old, but rather than changing them out the should develop the system further, adding more north facing slopes and areas to the total. For off-piste this is one of the best places in Japan.

Amazing terrain for good powder days, steep tree runs look awesome. We were there in January and it wasn't very busy, hardly ever waited to get on a lift. Definitely worth a visit. You can buy a pass just for Madarao, or for a little extra include the lifts at Tangram too.

Tangram Ski Circus is a part of the Myoko region, surrounded by renowned ski resorts like Seki Onsen and Madarao Kogen. The area offers diverse snow experiences, from guided backcountry trips to exhilarating deep powder tree runs. Visitors can also enjoy the Dontoyaki Fireworks Festival in January at Myoko Suginohara Ski Area.
This was quite possibly one of the best ski trips I've ever had! I've been on mountains around the world, but between the polite staff, the in-house karaoke rooms, and the public Onsen, the resort amenities kept us entertained whether we were on or off the mountain. Since we're talking about the mountain, from here you have access to both sides and a huge range of trails from pretty easy to right in the trees. No black diamond here, but advanced trails are very good with the beginner hills being friendly for all ages. The rooms are plenty good for sleeping and recovery between everything else for a softer-than-normal Japan style bed. If you're a foodie, there's the above-average buffet as well as multiple restaurants in the resort. We really enjoyed the cafe for something quick. Finally, the staff, there was not so much as a sneer or side-eye from any of them regardless of the oddity of my family's requests. They were the most polite and professional staff we've ever encountered. I can't wait to take my family back.

Had the worst ski rental experience here. We wanted to pick up, as is usual everywhere, the evening before but they charged us an extra day which is crazy ( the lifts were already closed for that day). They were zero help in sizing for the kids. I paid for premium skis and was then presented with the worst selection I have ever seen. All the equipment was beat up and in bad shape. They even gave my wife broken bindings on her snowboard which we didn’t realise until we were the other side in Madarao and had to get a car to drive her all the way back over. If looking for anything above beginner level equipment I would avoid.

Located in the town of Shinanomachi, Lake Nojiri is a picturesque destination surrounded by mountains and rolling hills. It offers various recreational activities throughout the year. In warmer months, visitors can rent kayaks and stand-up paddleboards to explore the tranquil waters or hike along the nearby trails. The town's elevation of over 600 meters provides a cool escape from summer heat.
Lake Nojiri offers crystal-clear waters perfect for boating and fishing. In summer, you can enjoy the cool breezes and scenic hiking trails, while winter transforms the area into a snowy wonderland ideal for skiing. The tranquil atmosphere, combined with the stunning natural landscape, makes Lake Nojiri a captivating destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Lovely lake, very cooling and breezy despite the summer heat. Got to spend few nights here, did the 15km run around the lake which was epic. Just dont forget to spray bug spray, cause omg I had to run faster to run away from them

How does it feels to have a boat ride surrounded by mountains ? Yesterday my family went sightseeing at lake Nojiri and we took a speed boat round the lake where we had a good scenic view of the mountains and the small island in the middle of the lake. It was a Low season and we can easily go around the lake without much traffic. Occasionally you will see some people fishing at the lake, I supposed is a great place to catch some fresh fishes. Will definitely recommend this place to spend your summer where you have the sun, the mountains, the lake, the wave and the cool winds, not to forget the perfect scenic. Cheers

This is one of the historical site in Japan. 70,000 years ago there were an elephants and Japanese government preserved and presented it very well. The local people here are really helpful. You can really enjoy the calmness of the lake.

Ski & Snowboard Areas
Seki Onsen Ski Area is a small, no-frills resort known for its deep powder snow and steep slopes. It has gained a cult reputation among skiers for offering some of the best snow in Japan, with up to six meters of soft powder. Despite its size, the ski area's interesting topography and heavy snowfall make it a paradise for powder hounds.
Great vibes, wonderful skiing at this indie resort. All about natural ungroomed snow with great terrain - not for someone looking for comfy lifts and groomers. Thank you for the charm of this place!
Matej M — Google review
Seki onsen ski area is privately owned by a very nice and cool family. The runs are mostly in groomed and the food is home cooked style and it is THE BEST ski area lunch I have ever had in Japan! The onsen is also one not to be missed! The onsen is red in color and the aroma is amazingly calming! Check them out if you love ungroomed runs!

This was my favourite spot for our biggest powder day. If theres a big snow day, make sure to head here. It’s low elevation gain but it makes up for it in charm and its punk rock feel.

Epic powder heaven. Not for beginners. Be ready to hike and self rescue.
Alex B — Google review
Great resort for more experienced skiers. Only two lifts and a very casual vibe to the whole thing. Have fun and be safe. Ski with friends!
Saskia A — Google review
Super small, only two lifts, one of them is a sketchy one-seater. But a lot of fun on a powder day, lots of tree runs available. So if the snow is good, check this place for a day..
Godard K — Google review
Small family owned resort Steep, great tree runs, great pow Not a beginner field, not somewhere ski patrol will hold your hand and baby you We absolutely scored here I'll be back!
Hannah F — Google review
Indeed great snow here but you'll get bored quickly with only two lifts, and one (the single pizzabox) was closed the day we came... The primary lift only accesses two runs, one groomed and one ungroomed.... Seems there is opportunity for a bit of exploration for backcountry deep powder, so snowboarders seem to love it here. We spent a half-day afternoon as a warm up to full days at the bigger resorts, not a bad option if you arrive around 12:30 and only 3000 yen. There are no crowds here but you could say that about anywhere in Myoko.... Slope-side restaurant was charming.

The Myoko Kogen Visitor Center is a must-visit spot for nature enthusiasts and history buffs. It houses the ancient Hida shrine, a 500-year-old Zelkova tree, and a museum displaying earthenware vessels of the Hida ruins and Mangoro Old Tomb. Visitors can also explore the nature of Myoko through exhibits on insects, flowers, and wild animals. The center offers an engaging experience with interactive quizzes suitable for both children and adults.
A very nice place to rest and enjoy the mountain view in comfortable seats. They serve drinks and sweet stuff. There is also an information point.

What a charming place to rest and enjoy the scenery with an amazing cup of coffee. There were great seating options for different types of gatherings and usage. The place was clean, open, and had charging for devices. I really appreciated the WiFi for studying and natural lighting as well.

A great place for a coffee ☕️ and muffin. The cafe has views of a pond. There is a shop with local arts and crafts. You can also visit a museum in the same building. The muffin was a bit too sweet to my taste. I had the sweet potato one. We also tried the coffee jelly, which was delicious. There was a generous scoop of ice cream on top. That's probably why it tasted so good.

Ikenotaira ALPEN BLICK Ski Resort is part of the Myoko Kogen area, which includes five resorts. It offers 15 courses suitable for beginners and intermediates, along with two short advanced runs. The resort features a Wide, Long Run slope for skiers to enjoy ample space, a Mavericks Park with jumps and rails for thrill-seekers, and a Kids Garden equipped with a conveyor belt for easy sledding.
Recently stayed here for 3 nights, and had the best time. Service was amazing from the start, we missed our train there and needed to change our shuttle bus pick up time, which they were so lovely about and were quick to respond and arrange via email (we didn’t have a working phone line to call). Everyone at the resort was lovely and friendly, from the beautiful front desk staff to the ski rentals. The ski slopes lead directly down to the resort entrance, which made popping in and out of the hotel (for the toilet, to eat, for a rest) very convenient, especially as newbie skiers. The snow fields were also very well maintained, regularly being flattened out for walking etc. We looked forward to breakfast and dinner every day (buffet style), for dinner there were chefs frying fresh tempura/karaage in front of you, and personal hotpot if you wish, which were lovely options after a long cold day in the snow. Even at the very end, we were delivered back to the station via shuttle, where our lovely driver also alighted to make sure we didn’t struggle with getting train tickets back. We had the best time at Alpen Blick, and would absolutely recommend this place to others! Would love to come back :)

Fantastic choice for beginner and low intermediate skiers with its wide placid groomers and long runs. Beautiful views. Lifts reasonably fast. Not a lot of variety, but good for one, possibly two day.
Ian B — Google review
Can be a bit tricky to get to with the local bus system, but a decent mix of easy slopes for beginners and some more intricate forest routes and jumps for more advanced skiers and snowboarders. Very friendly and efficient staff!
N L — Google review
The resort itself is ok. Unfortunately I am in a period of not too much snow. Off piste, tree run is not quite good at the moment. This place supposed to be packed with snow normally. The design of resort is fine. Enough beginners to intermediate runs for a day or two. Have a nice park for park players. Some runs very good for ground tricks. Food in restaurant is fine and reasonably priced. Remember to bring a ticket/ lift pass holder because it is not using electronic pass. It is old fashioned ticket.
Will W — Google review
Awesome Japanese feel! Hardly any lift lines. Great & reasonably priced restaurants. Great slopes for beginner and intermediate skiers. Brilliant terrain park. In-bounds tree runs for intermediates to advanced. Make sure you bring cash. No ATM and ticket office and restaurants don't take card.

While an entrance fee is required, the trail is well-maintained. First, follow the well-maintained boardwalk, then pass through a rocky forest, and you'll soon be over 2,000 meters. The open, pumice pine area, with the sound of the babbling river, is a soothing sight and sound, perfect for a digital detox. After passing Kurosawa Hut, the mountain is clearly formed by a long-ago eruption, and the rocky path continues. Food is decent but drinks are WAY too overpriced and they insist each person must order a drink. I get it that drinks are the way restaurants making most profit, but 700yen for less than half a can of Cola is just too greedy. *EDIT*: the owner reply saying the Coke is only 300(lunch) and 560(dinner) if you pay in cash is a complete outright lie! Both the paper and digital menu only had one price and it’s 700yen. And the waiters never mentioned any price difference either. Lowered my review by one star for this shameless lie.

As soon as you enter from the snowy outdoors, you are welcomed into a warm, cozy and inviting space where the severs were attentive and kind. Our selection of local sake, margherita pizza, and spinach and egg pizza were very tasty. And the apple dessert pizza was definitely a MUST as it had just the right amount of sweet, tart and cream. But the best part is the friendly and genuine owner who stopped plowing to find us space in his fully booked restaurant. Thank you and we will be back!

Wood fired pizza was mediocre. Wine list was lacking and over priced. Staff were not very friendly. Older style lodge house, bit of interesting paraphernalia, like old Singer sewing machines. Wouldn’t recommend for families with kids. Heard the carbonara is good from another traveler, but didn’t try it ourselves.

We love this place so much that we went there twice in two days. The highlights must be Apple and icecream pizza, teriyaki chicken pizza. All other dishes were great too. Nestled diagonally across from the Ikenotaira intersection, Arakin Ramen is a beloved local gem that offers more than just your typical ramen experience. This family-run establishment has been delighting patrons for over 60 years with its diverse menu, which leans towards izakaya-style dining. After an exhilarating day on the slopes, there's nothing quite like savoring a steaming bowl of their signature Shio chashumen or indulging in the highly-praised miso ramen.
Great little restaurant, we ate here multiple times because the food was consistently good and fresh. Lovely service we felt very welcome. It’s a 60 year old ramen place that serves a variety of dishes apart from just ramen. After a whole day skiing, we went for the ramen - we tried three different flavours, shioyu , miso and tomato - each has its distinctive taste and the serving was big with a lot of ingredients. The kitchen took time to cook which we appreciate, and we enjoyed the meal very much.

Udon no fu is a small and cozy restaurant in Akakura Onsen, offering a fantastic dining experience. The squid ink udon is highly recommended, along with other small plates like negi toro and apple tempura. The portions are generous, and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. Run by a friendly elderly couple, this place offers delicious food with great service. English menus are available, making it accessible to international visitors.
Amazing experience. Tiny room with entire family serving and cooking. Delightful, warm service and delicious, authentic and inexpensive. And the squid udon! Wow! Never had anything like it. Don’t wear white! We wish we’d found it earlier than our last night as we would have gone again.

Our best dinner in Akakura Onsen by far. This residential place is very small with only 3 tables so book early. The squid ink udon is fantastic and so are the rest of the small plates (negi toro & apple tempura is good). Slightly off the main street and it was dark and foggy when we walked there... a little scary!

This review is for the main dining room, lunch dining and bakery. I look forward to staying here, but it is hard to get a reservation without at least a year planning in advance! The food here is superb, in each of the locations you can get it inside the hotel. Only guests can dine at the main restaurant at night, but their lunches, while expensive, are masterpieces of cooking well worth the price. The cafe-outdoor eatery, again rather pricey, but the food is always delicious. In either location, you have amazing views of the surrounding valleys, mountains, and even Lake Nojiri on clear days. The breads (love the raisin bread here!) and the pastries from the bakery are fresh, flavorful, and you can get them to go. Fair warning, this is a popular destination for people that are not staying at the hotel, so the eateries can get very crowded.

Everyday life - this word expresses what we seek in travel: escaping from it all. There are a lot of people. For Japanese people, who are not good at resting, achieving this depends on how well they can empty their minds. For example, an unobstructed view. Natural beauty on an overwhelming scale. Just looking at it draws you in, and before you know it, you are empty. Isn't it true that everyone wants to have an experience like this? Akakura Kanko Hotel is located at an altitude of about 1,000m, halfway up Mt. Myoko, one of the 100 famous mountains of Japan. It was founded in 1937. When this classic resort was founded, the most important thing was the scenery. Later, the area was designated a national park, so no other buildings were constructed and the magnificent views were exclusive to this hotel. The Myoko Highlands, which change with the seasons, the majestic mountain ranges of Mt. Hakkai and Mt. Madarao, and the blue Lake Nojiri. Travelers who arrive here, exhausted from the day to day life, are soothed by the magnificent scenery and blend right in. The joy of travel, something they've never experienced before, will fill your entire body.

I have been using this hotel over 5 years. They have the best hostilities even among Japan. This hotel has almost 100 years of history. But the room don’t feel old because this hotel has been taken good care of. Every time we check in or check out, there will be someone at the entrance to welcome us or waving goodbye to us. I feel like home. There is welcome drink service until 5pm which service’s alcohol and light snacks with a nice view. We also had fire place during the stay. It was very nice. My kids found there is a family onsen, which we can get an onsen for ourselves! I highly recommend their restaurants. They have western cuisine, French cuisine and Japanese cuisine. I haven’t try their Japanese food yet but their western cuisine is very detailed. They also have the correct desert fork. We have a lot of requests based on our own needs. And this hotel always has some solutions for us! We will come back again.

I greatly enjoyed my stay here. It's pricier than where I would typically stay, but the experience was worth it. The restaurants were amazing. My daughter is vegan, and the chef prepared a 5 course meal just for her. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. Many don't speak English, but there were a few who did, and it worked out We were there in September, and it's a quiet location, so plan to spend time relaxing in the hotel or hiking on Mt Myoko. It's a much different experience than busy tokyo shopping. But it was a great place to spend a couple of nights relaxing in the middle of our trip.

Lovely hotel which served great food. The room w estates In was great. Had a private hot spring and the rest of the room was large and finished to a high standard. The communal hot spring was also great. As you can see when the weather was nice the view from the room was wonderful.

Great views and cake set was decent, but service was not to expectations. My daughter did not receive her cocoa and I had to ask for it again, despite being presented with the bill and charged for something we hadn’t received! The coffee was also warm, not hot, and lacking flavour.

A beautiful hotel on the hill top of elevation 1000 meter. It's very popular among skiers during winter season. Many greenery and short routes perfect to walk around the rest of the year. Very good service. You should try the Japanese restaurant. If you like Sake, the Sake sample from Niigata prefecture is a must.

Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park is a compact nature reserve featuring peaks, hot springs, and lakes, making it a popular destination for camping, hiking, and kayaking. The park offers diverse experiences such as a one-day hike from Togakushi to Sasagamine with local mountain guides. This ancient path has been historically significant for worship at Zenkoji Temple and transporting seafood from the Sea of Japan.
A beautiful small resort with very long runs and excellent snow. About $70 AUD for a lift ticket for the day. Good cafes at the bottom of the main run.

Kogakuro

4.2

Japanese inn
Kogakuro is a serene hot spring inn that offers simple yet comfortable rooms, complimentary breakfast, and access to a relaxing bathhouse and cozy lounge. The establishment prioritizes guest comfort by providing top-notch services and amenities, including free internet access and parking. Smoking is only allowed in designated areas, ensuring a smoke-free environment throughout the ryokan. Additionally, the attentive owner offers transportation to and from the station. Guests can also benefit from inclusive tickets for other hot springs in the area.
Excellent hotel. Great staff. So helpful in all matters. Breakfast just straightforward and easy. Highly recommend. It was a short walk to bus or lift base, which was the only negative but honestly, the walk means you have easy options to get on the bus to go to an alternative resort if the conditions don't suit you so a win anyway.

The Kougakuru is a ryokan that has a blend of Japanese and Western. We stayed at the end of March so it was quieter. We opted for the Japanese styled room and we had a lovely view of the mountain. There are both western and Japanese dining halls with breakfast served daily in the western dining hall. Buffet spread is a combination of western and Japanese with a cook to order egg and bacon station. There is a very cosy lounge area with a fireplace and board games, reminiscent of common rooms at university. The onsen has both indoor and outdoor area and is open almost around the clock. The onsen waters are really quite good on the skin, and the temperature is quite bearable for a long soak although the outdoor onsen waters are on the colder side. Murayama san, the formidable proprietress herself, is fluent in English and her staff are mostly French or Vietnamese and able to converse in English as well. She is the star of the establishment exuding fiercely protective warmth of a mother. I do hope to return again very soon in the future.

We booked this place without any pre info and we can say that we scored! To start with we came to ski and it was the ideal base for the local Myoko region. Mieko our host was absolutely the best host always helping us even how tired she may of been bless her. We got access to cheaper deals around the mountains with both ski passes and transport. Mieko also sent us to the best places to eat for dinner….The rooms were also good, beds were good, onsen was great, breakfast was exceptional, location was perfect! We met many lovely guests also staying there. I would love to come back someday I hope I can!!

We booked this place at the recommendation of a friend, and we really lucked out. This place has been absolutely fantastic, and SO easy. Mieko is incredible - she organised literally everything for us: from a shuttle to/from the train station, provided all of the information on trains both to/from the airport (even before we had arrived), recommendations for places to eat and things to do, organising a shuttle service to a different ski mountain when the local shuttle ended (end of the season) - she can do it all! The hotel breakfast is fantastic, the staff are lovely and go out of their way to be helpful, the onsen is amazing, the bar area is super comfortable (and has games), and you get discounts at ski mountains and for other activities too. There was nothing not to love. I hope we can come back some day!

This is a comfortable, clean and lovely place. Mieko, the proprietor, couldn’t do enough for us. She was so helpful with booking restaurants and getting us discounts everywhere. We had an amazing week at Kougakuro hotel in Akakura Onsen. The manager, Meiko, and her staff provided excellent service. So friendly and helpful for us newbies to Japan. The hotel is very well located to ski hire shop (Joey's) and many restaurants. If needed Meiko will arrange restaurant bookings. We had a double western room that was large, clean, very warm and comfortable. Down stairs bar, and lounge were great places to relax after a day skiing. Closest lift on Akakura Onsen field was only a few min walk and a free shuttle to Akakura Kanto was at end of the drive. Food was great and morning breakfasts were a highlight. I hope to be back again some day.

Stayed for a 3 day weekend for a ski trip. Kogakuro is a family run hotel in the heart of Akakura onsen village with history over 100 years. The hotel is quaint and has a homey feel. The service is great; all staff are welcoming and willing to help you with anything. Location is great either with car or train. The hotel has parking but limited due to the massive snowfall they get. There is a free shuttle bus run by the ski slopes from Myoko-Kogen station. I recommend taking the train (if you're coming from Tokyo) as the Shinkansen trip to Nagano+the local train to Myoko-Kogen is not at all a hassle. Rooms were spacious (10jyo Japanese rooms) and clean. Futons were very warm. Hotel facilities include laundry rooms (which we didn't use), a small library/reading corner, a fire pit/lounge to grab your after ski beer. They have drying rooms for skis and another for boots/skiwear. Changing room/luggage room is available before and after checkout. It's a 5 minute walk to the closest lift which is very convenient. Ask the front desk for a lift pass discount if you haven't already! Food was great- local rice, Tofu specialties and home made nozawana were delicious. Don't forget to try the home made Jam for breakfast! Onsen has a very strong sulphur scent. the water is clear but with large amounts of deposits. Temperature tends to be high but it warms you up like no other after hitting the slopes. Definitely will go back, thank you so much for accommodating us!

(Translated by Google) This station retains traces of the height of the bubble economy. Once bustling with passengers amid the ski boom, it now lies deserted, leaving behind an indescribable sense of emptiness. The remains of the boat-shaped ticket gate, wide staircases, rails, and a steel-framed platform roof create a world reminiscent of a novel or game, embodying the forgotten past of a snowy hometown. Perhaps it could be likened to a time capsule of the bubble era. Passing through this station brings with it a sense of nostalgia, a strange illusion of returning to a hometown or skiing trip in a time unknown to us. Formerly a boundary station between the Niigata and Nagano branches of the Shinetsu Main Line, the two companies are now separated at this station after the company was privatized. The station itself is under the jurisdiction of the Echigo Tokimeki Railway's Prancing Horse Line. There are no direct trains except for special or group trains, so those traveling from Nagano to Niigata, or vice versa, from Naoetsu to Nagano, must transfer here. Unfortunately, it started raining halfway through the race, so I wasn't able to do a full lap, so I'd like to come back someday with my dogs. The cherry blossoms are sure to be beautiful in spring, and there's a covered rest area so you can bring a picnic lunch and enjoy yourself. There are a lot of insects around in the summer, so insect repellent is a must. The athletic facilities are probably suitable for children up to the early elementary school years. Soba noodle shop
Nestled at the foot of Mt. Myoko, Kosobatei is a must-visit for soba enthusiasts. This charming eatery specializes in "kosoba," a rare local variety known for its unique texture and flavor. The moment you step inside, you're greeted by the enticing aroma of freshly made noodles that embody the essence of natural soba. Their tempura offerings are equally impressive, featuring seasonal vegetables and top-quality shrimp that are renowned for their freshness and taste.
(Translated by Google) This restaurant only uses the rare and mystical local variety "kosoba" grown at the foot of Mt. Myoko. They use a unique technique for binding the noodles in the Myoko area. The aroma of the noodles naturally reaches your nose, and it feels like a truly natural soba. The tempura vegetables are also made from fresh, local vegetables that are in season. The shrimp are apparently the world's highest grade shrimp that can be eaten raw. They were plump and delicious! The refined flavor goes perfectly with the soba soup. They also go well with soba soup. The restaurant has won numerous awards, including Michelin. I'm glad I went. It was summer, but Myoko is very cool, so I recommend it in the summer too. The restaurant was relaxed and calm, and my expectations were building as I sipped soba tea at the table. Soon the vegetable tempura was placed, followed immediately by the main dish of soba... I couldn't wait any longer and took a bite without adding any sauce... the aroma wafted through my nose. Delicious. I had never had soba noodles that were so fresh, chewy (they say they use "oyamabokuchi" as a binder), and fragrant. I ate it enthusiastically, and finished one bowl. However, my friend, who is as thoughtful as ever, ordered a second bowl, and this time I savored the taste. The hot tempura, covered in a thin batter, was crispy and juicy even after some time had passed. It was very delicious. It was worth driving on the highway to get there. Now I've ordered three bowls of soba noodles, with an extra bowl! 😋 I think he's still too full to eat...💦 I'm looking forward to bringing him back next time. I'm so sad to know that...😭※ I came here because I wanted to fill my stomach on the way back from the visitor center. I arrived around 5:30pm and was the only customer. After much consideration, I received the mixed fries set meal. I was so shocked when the menu I ordered came out that I forgot to take a picture of it all. I was surprised that it looked so delicious (lol) The fried chicken was thick, juicy, and surprisingly tender. Both the croquettes and fried fish were freshly fried and crispy, and were so well-done that it was a waste to add sauce or anything like that. I think this is a great cost performance for 900 yen. The macaroni salad next to the salad and the lemon and mustard were neatly arranged, and I could tell from the appearance that they had been carefully arranged. Both the small bowls and pickles are very delicious. You order by filling out the slip at each seat (I forgot to write it and had the host write it for me lol) Since the restaurant is run by the owner alone, it may take some time to serve the food when it's busy. Therefore, we recommend that you arrive with plenty of time to spare. Also, the owner was really cute and kind...(lol) In addition to table seats, there are also raised seats, so even if you are bringing your children with you, you can enjoy your meal with peace of mind. Samegao Castle Ruins is a historical site where Kagetora Uesugi met his tragic end after being defeated by Kageharu. The castle, nestled deep within the Hida ruins, served as an important stronghold connecting Kasugayama Castle in the north and the Shinetsu border. Visitors can enjoy a scenic hike from the southern route, adorned with blooming Katakuri flowers along Horikiri and winding trails.
To get to the castle ruins park, and the stamp in summer, head for the Samegaojoshi Parking Lot which is at Miyauchi, Myoko, Niigata 944-0097. In winter head to Kawaratei at 31-3 Jinguji, Myoko, Niigata 944-0096 for the castle stamp.

(Translated by Google) This is my second visit in May 2025 after a few years. Last time, I climbed the castle in the rain. I only went to the main castle and came back, so this time I was glad to be able to take my time to look around. The castle ruins are near the top of the mountain, so it's almost like a hike. I got a map at the information center and started climbing from the east climbing path. On the way, I saw a double moat (a Yayoi period ruin. The moat was filled in and I couldn't really see it), then I visited the east Ichinomaru → Sannomaru → Well → Toriguchi Kuruwa. It seems that if you climb from the main path, the south climbing path, you will join here. After that, I visited the Ninomaru → Honmaru → Yonekura, and returned to the information center via the north climbing path. The tour took about an hour. The castle ruins are the remains of the kuruwa and a deep moat, but it feels like a castle for enthusiasts and experts. You can get a map to walk around, but it would be nice if you could also get a map of the castle's layout. The underbrush has been cut neatly, making for a comfortable viewing experience. There are many circular tombs lined up on both sides of the hill. There are two keyhole-shaped tombs at the very back. There is a signboard here. The topmost keyhole-shaped tumulus overlooks the plains and sea below. I think some powerful people in the village told me that if I die, I should build a grave on top of that mountain and mourn. It was August and I was sweating, but I'm glad I went on the tomb tour. The scouting area is the Hida Historical Village, at the foot of the Minamiha Mountains in the western Kubiki Plain, where Hita Shrine is the center, as well as a group of ancient tombs, a moat village from the Yayoi period, and Samegao Castle, Yamashiro during the Sengoku period. Initially, we headed for the Kannondaira Tumulus Group on the north side. There were many small circular tombs in the oak forest on the tongue-shaped plateau, and two keyhole-shaped tombs were located on the top of the hill. From the Yamataikoku period to the Kofun period, there was probably a powerful force in the country of Etsu. In the history of Wei and Wajinden, there is a country to the east across the sea from Kyushu, and it is said that all of them were Wataneya, and this place is also one of those countries. Pork miso soup shop Tachibana is a no-frills eatery known for its tonjiru pork and onion soup served with rice. Despite being popular, the wait times are manageable, especially if you arrive early. The tonjiru set meal is highly recommended, offering a delicious and stable taste. The pork soup here uses only vegetable water without using water, resulting in a gentle taste made with white miso.
Pork miso soup was amazing here. A medium and small set , with pork miso soup, rice, and 2 types of pickles, was 2100 yen in total . You can only dream of this in Spain !

Shige S — Google review
This is a weird case of a ramen joint that has received a ton of press and always seems to have long lines, but the experience just doesn't warrant all the hype. On a good day the ramen is average at best for this type of soup, but the noodles are often hard and undercooked and the portions small. The workers must be overly stressed by the immense crowds because every time I've been there they were brusk to the point of rudeness. Ramen shops are always a bit of a "hurry up and eat" atmosphere, but this place takes it to a new level. Given how many decent ramen shops can be found in the area, it is a mystery why this one gets the traffic it does. Lines are out the door, people often park in other businesses, and the wait can be quite long if you don't get there as soon as they open. I have to imagine that at sometime there was an article or more likely a TV-"talent" visit who hyped the place, because otherwise there is absolutely no reason for the amount of crowds it gets. Most of the visitors seem to be out of towners too, not locals, which should tell you something.

Of particular note is the melting natural sweetness that comes from the large amount of onions that make up 80% of the soup, which is the secret to its unique flavor. Takeout is also possible, and some people brought their hot pot to the store. You can also purchase hot pot soup base and ramen in the store. ORDER------- ◆Ladies' set C (950 yen) ------------------ [About the food] ◇ Ladies' set C A well-balanced set that women will love, with rice, their famous pork soup (small), a small bowl (on this day it was vermicelli salad), pickles, fruit, and cold tea [Comments One bite and you'll understand why it's so popular! What particularly impressed me was the meltingly natural sweetness extracted from the pork, tofu, and the surprisingly large amount of onions used. Combined with the elegant richness of the white miso, the gentle flavor seeps into your mind and body with every bite, as if it were permeating every part of your body. Without relying on chemical seasonings, the tonjiru is condensed with the original flavor of the ingredients, making it the perfect expression to describe as a "soup to eat." Because it is a little sweet, I added shichimi halfway through, which tightens the flavor and makes it even more delicious. The carefully made tonjiru is full of the skills inherited from the previous generation and the passion put into each bowl, giving me a relaxing time that helped me forget the busyness of everyday life. It also goes great with rice! If you visit Myoko, be sure to experience this excitement at "Tonjiru no Mise Tachibana." It's a taste that will surely make you want to come back! (Translated by Google) It was my first time visiting this store as my usual store was closed. From the outside, I was worried that it was difficult to tell if the store was open, but the store has a large parking lot. Inside, each restaurant is divided into private rooms, so you can enjoy your meal in peace. Orders are made using a tablet. Two salads, assorted sashimi, two single sashimi items, assorted beef tongue, grilled Tochio fried tofu, horse sashimi, fried chicken, okonomiyaki? Order recommended fried rice and drinks. The amount of food is larger than usual, so I think it's better to wait and see what happens when ordering instead of ordering all at once. I was surprised when I saw the salad that first arrived. I was so full that I couldn't even go for dessert after the meal. Even though I was able to easily split the bill using a tablet and eat and drink as much as I could, I was surprised that it cost less than 5,000 yen per person. Of course, the food was fresh and delicious. When I left the store, I was surprised to see that the parking lot was full. It's not close to the station, so I think it's a place that can only be reached by car. I walked there about 15 minutes from my hotel, but there was still something I wanted to try, so I think I'll use it again.

(Translated by Google) All seats are private rooms. The store staff's response is good. It's a pub, but the parking lot is large. There aren't many great restaurants in the area, so it's not a bad idea to just come here for dinner. (Original) 全席個室になっている。店員の対応良い。居酒屋だが駐車場も大きい。周辺にめぼしい飲食店が少ないので普通に夕食利用でもわるくない。

(Translated by Google) Contrary to its name, it's fantastic. The semi-private rooms allow for a relaxed dining experience. The meals are generous and delicious, with the yakitori in particular being exceptional. The meat is large and the flavor of the chicken is undeniable in the sauce. I was traveling, but I'd definitely like to return.
