Kastraki in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Kastraki, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Kastraki is a traditional village at the foot of the Meteora rock formations, making it one of the closest and most atmospheric bases for visiting the famous cliff-top monasteries. Its stone houses, narrow lanes, and nearby hiking trails offer a quieter alternative to neighboring Kalambaka while still providing easy access to viewpoints and monastery entrances. From Kastraki you can explore scenic routes through forests and rock pillars on foot or by bike, and return to tavernas serving regional Thessalian dishes.
With favorites like Meteoron Panorama, Qastiro Meteora, and Monastery of the Holy Trinity, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Charama Tavern and Boufidis Greek Tavern so you can get the best taste of Kastraki while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Nestled in the heart of central Greece, Meteora is a breathtaking destination that captivates visitors with its towering rock formations and ancient monasteries. This UNESCO World Heritage site features six Eastern Orthodox monasteries perched atop colossal sandstone cliffs, creating a surreal landscape that feels almost otherworldly. The name "Meteora," meaning 'lofty' or 'elevated,' perfectly encapsulates the essence of this stunning locale.
Super amazing places. Lots of history at these monasteries and it's a wonder at how they were able to build them so high up. There's is an admission fee at each monastery. Also there are some light dress codes so please look up. There is parking around each area but be forewarned there are tons of people that visit this and many shuttle buses so you will more than likely have to park a distance and walk. There are also many stairs at a couple of them to get up to so it may be difficult for some. There is a total of 6 monasteries that you can visit. It does get very busy and even arriving earlier it still seemed very full. Would be interesting to go with a tour guide so you can hear more of the details of the place as there is not a lot in English. Such an amazing place and I would highly recommend visiting here if you can.
Jay H — Google review
This is a truly surreal and stunning experience. Highly recommend at least once on your life. We took a tour bus which on total is a 11 hr day but totally worth it with no hassle. Costs £5 each to enter each mosque.
Kelsey M — Google review
Great place for a day trip. If you are driving, you will enjoy the wide and safe road. You can go to the top by driving your car. Hiking route is also available. Overall, the scenic view is breathtaking and humans capability of building churches and residences are absolutely surreal!

An amazing experience - far exceeded our expectations. We visited St Nicholas & Varlaam monastries. St Nicholas was small with lots of steps but was fantastic. Not very busy. Varlaam was larger & easier to access. The art work in both is stunning. Having a guide to explain was useful. The views are breathtaking.
Peter E — Google review
We absolutely loved the visit to Monasteries in Meteora. It was so peaceful! We visited two - one with Monks and second with Nuns. Both were equally beautiful and well maintained. Views from these locations were breathtaking!! 😍😍
Kiran — Google review
Meteora is home to some truly impressive monasteries. For women, skirts are required; if you don’t have one, they are provided at the entrance. The entrance fee is €5 per person. Note that each monastery closes one day per week, so plan accordingly. Be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.

Monsteries on top of mateora hills. Understand the history of Kalampaka and Mateora. Unique landscaping, stunning view and awesome unesco site. Using ground tour from Athens to Mateora. 14 hours tour. 4 hours bus travel one way. Totally worth it.
Ahmad A — Google review
A very magical and spiritual place. If your touring Greece this is a MUST see. It's about a 3 hour drive from Delphi. And be sure to check if the various Monasteries are open. Leave yourself at least two or three hours to tour the major Monasteries.

The Holy Monastery Great Meteoron -Transfiguration of the Saviour, established in the 14th century, is the largest and most visited out of six active monasteries in Meteora. Perched on top of Broad Rock over 600 meters above sea level, it requires ascending 115 steps to reach. Despite being a popular stop for tour buses, it's recommended to visit early or late in the day due to crowds and limited parking.
Amazing. Meteora is world famous for its six Eastern Orthodox monasteries that are perched atop gigantic rock pillars in the mountains. The monasteries are world heritage listed; and are absolutely amazing…. certainly a “must see”. All have been around for some hundreds of years; and it is incredible to imagine that they were built so long ago. First, we visited the Holy Monastery of the Great Meteoron. It is so calm and peaceful although it can be quite crowded at times - so pick your arrival times carefully. There is a very strict dress code to enter (we came prepared) and some of the monasteries are REALLY hard work to get to. Lots of steps; Lots of rests; Lots of sweat … but we made it.
Norm P — Google review
The Great Meteoron Monastery is an incredible place to visit and truly lives up to its name. We reached it by hiking through the forest from Kastraki, and the walk was magical – quiet, scenic, and full of breathtaking views of the rocks and valleys. The monastery itself is steeped in history, with beautifully preserved frescoes, impressive architecture, and interesting exhibits that give you a real sense of the past. The views from the top are simply unforgettable. It’s a bit of a workout to get there, but the experience is one you’ll remember forever.
Sofie S — Google review
A beautiful and well-preserved monastery with many authentic and original details. The real highlight is the rock formations. We visited in autumn, and the mix of colorful leaves, green bushes, and stone cliffs was breathtaking. You can see the monasteries on top of the rocks without needing drones. A truly magical place.
Soledad R — Google review
Great view and a well preserved monastery. God bless all the people. Many visitors during visit, can be crowded, make sure to grab a bottle of water before you go up there. Enjoy the view and pray for all. Amen
Stelios F — Google review
Calm and peacefull place with astonishing views..although its quite crowded in day time. Maybe theres less people in the morning..Dont forget to wear longpant and women - a dress covering legs and shoulders. Be respectfull for the rules inside, this is a place not for selfies or photos but fot prayer and meditation.
Sarunas K — Google review
Great views and beautiful monastery. Went early morning as it is quite a lot of steps down & up to get to the entrance. Entrance fee was €5, as with the other monasteries. There is a nice, large gift shop here with a variety of religious gifts, honey, wines, soaps etc.
Liezl L — Google review
The most popular monastery at Meteora, and I can see why. Despite the many steps to get to the top, there were tons of people walking up and down. The views are incredible, they have various museums inside the walls, and plenty of art inside the churches. This one was the most complete in terms of showing you the historical way of life of the monks living there.

Awesome experience both from outside and inside. Some steps to take tough - wear good shoes and check the opening days and times!

Perched on a cliff, the Monastery of Varlaam is a stunning 14th-century monastery featuring a chapel adorned with frescoes and an intriguing museum. Rebuilt in the 16th century, it stands as the second-largest monastery in Meteora. Visitors can explore the museum to gain insight into the monks' daily life and their path to becoming monks. It's important for women to wear long skirts or purchase pareos at the entrance if not dressed appropriately.
Visited the monastery during a pilgrimage tour of Greece this summer. Before going, we were told by our guide that all the women had to wear skirts and the men long pants. Once we were in the complex, we were in awe at the location being on the top of the mountain. We also learned that before a stone staircase was built, the monks used a pulley system to bring supplies and themselves up to the building. The museum inside showcased the daily lives of the monks and the inner prayer chambers were spectacular. A great experience for everyone.
Anthony D — Google review
The monastery is very beautiful, and the museum is worth a visit as well. It has a dress code requiring women to cover their arms and legs, and men to cover their legs. While the rules are not strictly enforced, coverings can be borrowed if needed. Some visitors are checked more closely than others. From the monastery, you also get a wonderful view, and the stairs are easier to manage than expected.
Julian — Google review
This monastery is a must. One of the biggest and most impressive ones. It holds a church with great byzantine art, and also a very interesting museum with ancient books, customs, artifacts and even video clips showing the life in the monastery 100+ years ago. There is also the winery with its huge wine barrel and the old man operated lift. You really had to trust your friends back there... Photography is allowed only in part of the monastery.

Varlaam Monastery is one of the most impressive and beautifully preserved monasteries in Meteora. We walked from the town of Kastraki through the forest to get there, and the journey itself was absolutely beautiful – peaceful, green, and full of incredible views along the way. The monastery at the top is rich in history, with stunning frescoes, well-kept grounds, and a calm, spiritual atmosphere. The panoramic views from above are breathtaking and make the climb completely worth it. A must-visit when exploring Meteora – both majestic and deeply peaceful.
Sofie S — Google review
We visited only two monasteries and this was one of them. We arrived around 10 am on Saturday morning and although there were crowds it got even more crowded when we were about to leave at 11 am. It is easily accessible and there is decent amount of parking places and parking is free.
Merjem H — Google review
As with the other monasteries of the meteora, it is built for worship like a fort. Initally it was accessible only through the main tower with the use of a rope net. The stairway in use today is a rather recent addition. What you are about to experience is astonishing architecture upon an impossible location with view to a landscape that seems carved out of divine imagination at its best. Magnificent religious artifacts, ancient scriptures and other interesting items exhibited are a bonus. Enjoy!... but do so respectfully. This is a home and a place of prayer for people fully devoted into this way of life.
George S — Google review
A beautiful monastery with amazing views and rich history. Entry is €5 per person (cash only), the same as at the Great Meteoron. Souvenirs here are noticeably more expensive compared to those at the Great Meteoron, but the visit itself is worth it

The Monastery of the Holy Trinity at Meteora is a historic and awe-inspiring site located on a dramatic rocky point with sweeping views. The name "Meteora" reflects the suspended heavenly appearance of the rock formations. This UNESCO World Heritage site consists of six surviving monasteries, dating back to the 9th century when hermits began cave-dwelling in this area. Despite being less visited by tourists on bus tours, it offers spiritual tranquility and preserved quietness.
The monastery i enjoyed the most. It has a very large number of steps and ramps going down and then back up. The art work was very impressive. The views were spectacular.

I recommend to wear skirts or dresses for women. They won’t let you in if you’re wearing a short but you can purchase a sarong in the entrance. The top view was amazing. It took us 4 hours to drive there with a rental car from Athens. What a beautiful solemn place

I had a beautiful time visiting this incredible monastery. It was peaceful and offered amazing views. You could even get quiet time to reflect even among the huge crowds visiting it. The view is truly breathtaking. It is an amazing experience. I hope to go back.

The Monastery of the Holy Trinity was the first monastery we actually climbed steps to enter. Many reviews online say it’s exhausting, but we found it very manageable. Inside, you can see beautiful Orthodox-style art, and outside there’s even a small old cable system once used by monks for transport. At the back, there’s a wide viewpoint with stunning views of Kalambaka — absolutely worth it!

The Holy Trinity Monastery is absolutely breathtaking – one of the most incredible and awe-inspiring places to visit in Meteora. Perched high on a rocky pillar, the views from the top are simply spectacular, overlooking the entire valley and surrounding monasteries. We walked up from Kalambaka and it involves quite a few steps, but every bit of effort is worth it once you reach the top. It takes about 45 minutes. The monastery itself is peaceful, spiritual, and full of history. A must-visit when exploring Meteora – truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

A Majestic monastery perched high in the Kalambaka mountains. Many relics and museums to visit within. I really loved the fact that this is a living monastery - where priests/monks are actively involved the interaction with visitors.

Insane views, very cool to see in person. A couple of tips, go EARLY! After 9am the busses arrive and the sites are flooded with visitors. Also carry cash with you as the monasteries do not accept card as payment for entry

The Holy Monastery of Saint Stephan is a remarkable rock-top monastery in Greece, featuring 16th- and 18th-century churches as well as a museum. Situated 300 meters above the town of Kalambaka, it offers stunning views of the Pindos mountain range and Thessaly valley. Accessible via a small bridge, this monastery stands out for being the easiest to reach with no steps to climb.
Visiting the Nunnery of St. Stephen was one of the highlights of my trip to Meteora. Among all the monasteries perched atop the towering rock formations, this one is by far the most accessible. It’s perfect for anyone with mobility concerns — there’s a small bridge leading directly to the entrance, and even wheelchair users can access the site comfortably, which is a rarity for such historic and mountainous locations. The entrance fee is very reasonable at just 5 euros per person, and children up to 12 get in for free. Just a small note for women: you’ll need to wear a skirt or dress to enter. If you forget, no worries — they provide scarves at the entrance that you can wrap around your waist. Inside, the monastery is peaceful and beautifully maintained. The views over the valley are breathtaking, and the interior of the chapel is richly decorated with icons and religious artwork that reflect centuries of devotion. The atmosphere is serene, and the nuns who reside there maintain a quiet dignity and warmth that enhances the experience. One important thing to remember is that the monastery is closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly. All in all, the Nunnery of St. Stephen is a must-see — whether you’re drawn by the spiritual history, the stunning location, or the thoughtful accessibility. Highly recommended!
Ilonastef — Google review
The Holy Monastery of Saint Stephen is one of the only two nun monasteries in Meteora, and it’s also one of the easiest to reach since it doesn’t require climbing many steps. There are small stalls outside selling souvenirs. We didn’t go inside due to time, but even viewing it from afar gives a sense of grandeur and serenity.
Alec T — Google review
St. Stephen’s Nunnery is a beautiful and peaceful monastery in Meteora. It’s the easiest to access, with a small bridge instead of steep steps, making it ideal for visitors of all ages. Inside, you’ll find stunning frescoes, a serene atmosphere, and a deep sense of history. The views from the terrace are breathtaking, stretching across the valley and the distant peaks. A truly special place that leaves you feeling calm and inspired long after you leave.
Sofie S — Google review
Beautiful and sacred monastery to visit. The interior is absolutely stunning and very well maintained. A must-visit if you’re interested in Byzantine architecture and temples. The nuns are incredibly friendly, supportive, and informative. I was greeted by Sister Stefania upon entering, who kindly spent so much time with me, explaining the history of the monastery, the saint to whom it is dedicated, and going out of her way to be kind and welcoming. I loved visiting and certainly want to return to learn even more. (Adding a few photos of monasteries I took. No specifically the one of Saint Stephen’s)
Dimitrios S — Google review
I feel this monastery is the easiest to navigate with people that have mobility concerns. It is absolutely stunning and the views are breathtaking. Keep in mind that because of the ease of access means that it can be busy. Like all the other 6 monasteries there is a dress requirement, although it probably was the most lax that I saw. They do have wraps for the women to wrap around (see photo).
Sandra R — Google review
This monastery was most likely initially built in the 11th century and probably peaked in the 14th century. As all monasteries operating in those troubled times when threats included, pirates, roaming warbands, enemy raiding parties, and common thieves, it served as a refuge and a fort almost as much as a place of prayer. The stone bridge we see today is recent addition. Initially, entrance was admitted via a drawbridge or ropes over the forbidding gorge between the two edges of the bridge. Arrow slits can still be seen around the entrance, while small windows also provided little light and much protection to those required to defend from within. Within the monastery there is much to be seen. Centuries old frescoes, documents dating as far back as the 6th century, woodwork of exceptional quality and artistic value, and very much more. Photos taken here are also most likely to be amazing and easily will take their place among the most spectacular in your collection. Yet one must keep in mind that this is a place of serenity and prayer, built and maintained by individuals fully devoted to these purposes. Do not forget this and try to respect it, even if you are not a believer.
George S — Google review

Meteoron Panorama is one of the top dining spots in Kalambaka, offering a delightful culinary experience. Alongside other popular eateries like Taverna Gardenia and Boufidis Greek Tavern, it promises to treat visitors to the finest flavors in the area. This restaurant has garnered positive reviews for its exceptional cuisine and panoramic views, making it a must-visit destination for food enthusiasts exploring Kalambaka.
An absolutely amazing dining experience with the most beautiful backdrop! My wife, eight-year-old daughter, friend, and I booked a 19.00 reservation on an August evening and it was perfect! From the moment we walked inside this spacious beautifully-decorated restaurant, Monika made us feel like family. She remembered and accommodated our friend's gluten allergy. She made our daughter feel so special by talking to her and giving her little gifts. She was the best server we had while spending a month in Greece! The food is fresh, local, and so good. We ordered the feta that gets fired right in front of your eyes. The mushroom soup is the BEST I've ever had. (We ordered a second serving!) The steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The stuffed peppers and tomatoes were unique. Once we were done, dessert was brought on the house to our table! So kind!

We enjoyed a relaxing evening dinner after arriving in Kalabaka. We had the beet salad, side of wild mushrooms, stuffed chicken and black pig steak. Portions were generous. Flavors were perfect. Service was attentive and friendly. The view is lovely. We would eat here again.

A wonderful restaurant with a perfect view of the Meteora rock formations. The food was excellent. The sausages were flavorful and well cooked. We had filled chicken, black pork, and lamb, and everything was delicious. The lady who hosted us was kind and welcoming. You can tell she enjoys her work. Her service made the meal even more special

Fantastic views especially at Golden hour/sunset, we went two nights in a row getting there around 6p and were surprised it wasn't crowded. With restaurants with gorgeous views I usually have lower expectations of the food but all 9 dishes that we ordered over two nights were very good. Standouts were the mushroom soup and lamb ballotine.

Outstanding service and quality of dishes on a truly impressive views. The food was absolutely beautiful ate Chicken with pita bread, mushroom soup and beautifully made bread. The desert ice cream with orange cake was delicious. Add to that the amazing view in the terrace during sunset 🙏

The restaurant offers a beautiful view, making it a lovely spot to enjoy a meal. The food was very tasty and well-prepared, definitely above average in quality. Prices are a bit higher compared to typical Greek restaurants, but overall the experience was worth it for the atmosphere and taste.

When our Meteora tour guide recommended this restaurant, we arrived a little guarded — group recommendations can sometimes feel touristy. But any hesitation was quickly put aside. From the moment we were greeted, the atmosphere felt authentic and welcoming. Our hostess, Monica, guided us through the daily specials, and we happily ordered everything she recommended: the earthy mushroom soup, the perfectly crisp fried goat cheese, and the rich, comforting moussaka — flambéed with great aplomb by Monica herself! Each dish was outstanding, and it was clear they take pride in serving food with both flavour and heart. What made the evening most memorable was the warmth of the service. In a group of fifty, it would have been easy to feel like “just another table,” but instead we felt seen, welcomed, and genuinely cared for. If you’re visiting Meteora, this is more than just a meal — it’s an experience not to be missed.

We had an absolutely wonderful experience! The lady from the staff — her name was probably Monika — was incredibly kind, helpful, and just genuinely lovely. Absolutely fantastic experience! The food is outstanding—everything is made with fresh ingredients, and the regional feta cheese adds an authentic touch. The lamb chops were a highlight: tender, juicy, and grilled to perfection, giving them a delicious smoky flavor. The setting is just as impressive. The space is charming, with a small fountain that adds a relaxing, picturesque element to the atmosphere. The background music complements the ambiance beautifully. Service was top-notch. The staff were incredibly friendly and efficient. They not only spoke excellent English but also helped me with a few Greek pronunciations, which made the experience even more enjoyable. After 2 weeks in Greece . This is the first restaurant where I felt the service was truely bad. I ordered a salad which never came And they didn’t even serve bread. The gentleman collecting the bill showed true unhappiness even when I was making payment. I’m glad I was in and out in 20 mins. Regret coming to this place considering the multitude of nice restaurants around

A very Greek tavern. Charming in its atmosphere, despite being next to a busy road. You won’t be bothered by the road, like none of any of the other visitors are. Who are mostly local people, by the way. The waiter could work on his hospitality. A smile goes a long way, my friend. And we had to wait at least 20 minutes for our check. But the food was simply amazing. You’ve gotta go here. You won’t be disappointed!

If you are looking for a touristic restaurant go there, but if you're interested in good Greek taverna find another place. We went there for a dinner and the stuff was tired and not very interesting of the service. Finally, after we drunk some beers they bring a watermelon for a dessert. I asked for something sweet and they inform me that I have to pay for it. I paid, no problem, but this leave a bad feeling in me. Pork is super, chicken is good, but lamb was with a smell and was overcooked.

The food here was absolutely phenomenal, Greek hospitality at its finest. The six of us ordered the stuffed vegetables, tzaiziki, pita, chicken soup and the chicken souvlaki as well as pork souvlaki. All of the items were served generously and were extremely tasty. You must try the tzaiziki and the chicken and pork souvlaki. The food was cooked passionately and the flavour of the chicken and pork were spot on and deeply flavourful. I highly recommend anyone visiting the monasteries to pop by and have your meal here on the way up.

Good meat, horrible fries. Couldn’t eat whole portion of them. Drowned in oil. For 5 stars opinion I would strongly recommend to make better fries, which are half of the meal. 12 euro for meal which half is hard to eat doesn’t look good. Nice place to have lunch or dinner and kind waiter.

After visiting Meteora (which was simply amazing) we stopped here for a light lunch before heading home. I suspect that the place is a bit of a 'tourist trap' as most of the tour guides seem to come here after the Meteora visit. Nonetheless, we thought that it was pretty good/. We only had a light meal but that was good enough for us - and it was delicious. the Staff were friendly and the Service was good. So, no complaints from us. Well Done!

We had a wonderful dinner and the service was great as well as the atmosphere. I really enjoyed the lamb ribs and Eleni was awesome and made my wife her special salad which was delicious!

Cafe
Qastiro Meteora is a cozy and beautiful pizzeria located in Kastraki, nestled in the mountains with breathtaking views of the rocks. The staff is friendly, and the atmosphere is nice, making it a perfect spot for enjoying cocktails or wine while taking in the stunning scenery. While some visitors found the food options to be limited, others enjoyed the really good pizza and great drinks.
Fantastic view of the mountains with great food that has fresh ingredients, delicious and served hot! There's a few stray cats roaming around but they don't annoy you, as usual. You have an option to sit outside with a view or inside. The prices are fair, portion sizes are large, and lots of food and drinks item on the menu, including breakfast.

The serene vibes, the rocks the cats😻. Loved it all. Food was good. Very friendly people. A cafe must visit.

Restaurant
Valia Calda Restaurant stands out among the traditional tavernas in the Meteora region by focusing on Vlach cuisine, using local ingredients like wild herbs, mushrooms, river trout, and lamb. The menu offers a variety of vegan options and is known for its delicious traditional Greek dishes. Visitors have praised the restaurant's friendly service and comfortable environment.
One of the best meals I had in Greece! Definitely YOU HAVE TO TRY THE TRILOGY. Seriously, SO SO GOOD! Worth every penny and more 🤤 They also offer semolina for dessert complementary. Para los hispanohablantes, tenéis qué probar el entrante llamado Trilogy! Increíble! Lo mejor que he probado en Grecia! The staff is so so kind! 100% recommended if you are in Kalambaka

A lovely oasis feel with tables in the patio that makes your dining experience seem decadent, and normal restaurant vibe indoor. Staff was alright - did their job in trying to be attentive for your whole dining experience - but not the most warm and fuzzy customer service. It’s offset by lovely ambience. When it came to food, there was no wow factor. Didn’t find the food to be bad nor amazing. They all came out relatively quick for table of 4, which was quite appreciated. Unlike some restaurants in Toronto, bread was not complementary.

Ambience and food are excellent. A very intimate setting with a menu with good variety. I loved the walnut balls and the orzo with mushroom, both delicious and made with lovez

The food was genuinely good, but the billing left a bad taste. We were the only guests at the time, and several items were charged higher than the menu prices. What we ordered vs. what we were charged: — Tea (2x) — menu €3 each, charged €6 each. Refunded after we asked. — Soup of the day (3x) — menu €6.80 each, charged €13 each. Not refunded. — Spanakopita (2x) — €6 each (charged correctly). — Orzo — €9 (charged correctly). Bottom line: the dishes were tasty, but please check your receipt carefully and compare it with the menu.

Probably the best taverna in Kalambaka. Traditional dishes from the area. Warmly and friendly staff. We order noodle with mushrooms and truffle, geant beans and souvlaki.

Wonderful experience at this traditional Greek restaurant near Meteora! I had the moussaka and galotyri — a delicious, fresh cheese made from goat and/or sheep’s milk. Everything was full of flavor and authenticity. The owner was incredibly friendly, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. Highly recommended!
