Umi Jigoku, also known as Sea Hell, is one of the eight Beppu Hells in Japan. This geothermal pool was formed 1,200 years ago when Tsurumi Volcano erupted and is the largest hot spring among the group. The cobalt-blue water of Umi Jigoku looks magical and reaches temperatures around 98 degrees Celsius. Visitors can admire the vapors cloaking the pool while enjoying a footbath or visiting the nearby cafe.
🌟 A must-visit gem in Beppu! This spot is absolutely beautiful and worth adding to your itinerary. You don’t need to spend hours here—we explored everything in under an hour and still felt satisfied! We arrived around 4 PM after taking bus #5 from Beppu Station. The ticket was just ¥500, making it a quick, affordable, and memorable stop. Highly recommended!

The colour is very pretty! Has a large selection on their omiyage (gifts). I recommend going to this place. You get to see water lily garden, and the red hell. There's also greenhouse, but it's just very small section.
Jessica T — Google review
A short bus ride (20 mins, bus 41) from Beppu Station is Umi Jigoku hot springs. Too hot to swim and they describe it as “hell” as resembling what hell might be like. Lots of tourists and a good gift shop. Walk up to the Shrine and enjoy the green environment and ponds with water lillies.
Paul S — Google review
Only this onsen is worth visiting in Beppu. The blue colour and steaming is stunning m. The place is well maintained and has a nice walking path around the pond. Honestly, the other hells are quite similar and not really worth the time, just go visit this one is enough.
Don C — Google review
Of the three jigoku that we saw this was my favourite. Two beautiful springs to view but more importantly the hot foot bath, which fixed my very sore feet. We paid at each venue, as three was enough for us. If you are only doing one this might be the best. No lines, went straight in.

🔥💧 Today I explored the famous 7 Hells of Beppu – each hot spring with its own unique color, steam, and character. From the bubbling blue sea hell to the steaming mud hell, it truly felt like stepping into another world. An unforgettable onsen adventure in Japan! 🇯🇵♨️

During our Fukuoka tour with Gogoday Travel, we visited Umi Jigoku as a backup stop and it turned out to be a wonderful surprise. The site is beautifully serene, featuring soothing blue hot springs that create a peaceful atmosphere. I particularly enjoyed the tranquil foot bath, which was both relaxing and refreshing after a day of sightseeing. The area is well maintained and offers great photo opportunities. Helen, our guide, provided insightful information about the site, adding to the overall experience. Umi Jigoku is highly recommended as a calm and unique destination worth visiting.

Visiting Umi Jigoku is like stepping into a surreal, vibrant hot spring dreamland—perfect for anyone traveling through Beppu. Here’s what makes it unforgettable: • Striking Azure Waters: The onsen’s iconic cobalt-blue pools are truly mesmerizing. Their tranquil color and rising steam clouds transform the landscape into an otherworldly spectacle—like a portal to another realm. • Themed Attractions: Beyond just soaking in the sights, Umi Jigoku offers fascinating experiences: • A steaming mud bath, known for its soothing properties. • Pathways lined with colorful thermal ponds, each bubbling up its own steamy secrets. • A small but charming foot-onsen, where you can dip your feet in warm water while gazing at the scenery. • Pleasant Visitor Experience: The site is well-maintained with clean, informative signage. A café on-site serves refreshments and the infamous beaten egg boiled in onsen water, a quirky must-try when you’re here. • Cultural Insight: Umi Jigoku isn’t a bathing facility for everyday use—it’s one of Beppu’s renowned “Jigoku Meguri” (Hell Tour) destinations, a captivating cultural showcase that explores the amazing diversity of volcanic hot springs. • Convenient & Scenic: Easily accessible by car or public transport, it also features souvenir shops selling local treats and Beppu branding. The gardens nestled around the onsen ponds create picturesque spots for photography. ⸻ 🔖 Highlights: ✓ Iconic blue hot spring pools ✓ Mud bath experience ✓ Relaxing foot onsen ✓ On-site café and snacks ✓ Pro-grade photo opportunities ⸻ 🎯 Final Verdict: Umi Jigoku is more than just a hot spring—it’s an experience. Whether you’re into volcanic geology, serene landscapes, or quirky local culture, it’s impossible not to be captivated. Make sure it’s high on your Beppu “Hell Tour” list!

Beppu 'Jigoku Meguri' Hells Tour is a famous hot springs attraction with themed fenced pools and animal enclosures. The tour consists of two groups, one at Kannawa and the other further north. The Kannawa group includes unique hells like Umi Jigoku, Oniishibozu Jigoku, Shira-ike Jigoku, and Kamado Jigoku.
Interesting place to visit. All seven jigoku is unique on its own. Highly recommended to enter all seven jigoku. Souvenir and vibes of each jigoku is different.

It was a fascinating experience to explore various types of onsen all located within a nearby area. Each hot spring showcased unique characteristics—from mineral composition and water temperature to design and ambiance. Although the site is designated for observation and not for commercial use, it offers a rare opportunity to study and appreciate the natural and cultural richness of Japan’s onsen tradition. I was especially excited to learn about the geological factors that influence the formation of these hot springs and their reputed health benefits. This visit deepened my appreciation for the science and heritage behind Japan’s bathing culture. The parking was free of cost.
Saudeep B — Google review
There are 7 hells in total - 5 clustered together and 2 a bit farther away. Each has its own unique character and a separate entrance. At the main hell you can either buy a ticket for all 7, a ticket for the 5 adjacent ones, or pay individually. We chose the third option. After nearly an hour at the first/main hell, the kids picked the alligator hell next. Visiting 2 hells felt more than enough for us 🤷‍♂️.
Boaz G — Google review
I was here 16 years ago when my son was only 1 years old. This place has been transformed and it’s prettier than before. The gift shop has also been renovated. Beautiful sights of flowers and landscape and another garden and greenhouse added in the area. The flowers in Japan are pretty as usual
Cynthia T — Google review
Pretty incredible and fascinating place! You can explore all 7 on a day, just need to take the bus between 2 sites. The combined ticket is good value if you can do all 7. The information desk has very friendly and helpful staff, good English too. One star less because of the conditions of the crocodiles and fishes... We enjoyed all the jigoku, had fun collecting stamps!

This was a total unexpected and super nice experience in Beppu. We did a road trip thru Kyushu and had a brief stop in Beppu and visit the seven hills, very nice and interesting place. If have time it’s interesting to visit
Jorge B — Google review
It was a wonderfull experience, visited 5 hells but couldn't manage to go to other two as these were far away. Package for all seven hells consted me 2200 yen from Beppu Station Tourist Information. Out of these five hells the first and fourth hells were so fascinating showcasung beautiful water and huge crocodiles. Only problem was heavy traffic from Beppu Station to the place and vice versa.
Roshan K — Google review
I was only able to visit Umi Jigoku since I had limited time. There were a lot of people but the place was big as to no overcrowding. I liked the onsens with steam, it was very different and enjoyable at the same time.

Super public bath
Hyotan Onsen, located in the Kannawa area of Beppu, is a recently renovated day trip hot spring facility offering a variety of unique bathing experiences. This low-key spot features both outdoor and indoor hot-spring baths, including private options, as well as Japanese meals. The gender-segregated hot springs cater to guests with tattoos and offer a wide range of bathing styles such as sand baths, foot baths, waterfall baths, steam baths, and even family baths for private reservations.
Came here after read many review. It really live up to its standard at a reasonable price. Worth and a must visit onsen choice for anyone looking for good onsen experience. Like to specially thanks the pudding ice cream store (饮泉堂)is that while i only have credit card at time making payments and their system/server down unable to process payment. They given me the ice cream free of charge. Its not about money but its show that they does prioritise services too. Thanks and keep it up.

Nice private onsen, 3000¥ or 30AUD for an hour in the pool. The pool is empty when you arrive and you put a coin in the vending machine to make the hot water flow! The little steam room is also very cute. There is a free public foot bath outside. We also ate lunch before we went. I got a butter chicken curry for 1400¥.

Oh it was crazy good. Men had 9 different baths. 3 indoors and 1 outdoor. Sand bath was great fell asleep. Waterfall was good massage. The cold dip was great to cool down and start another round of dipping quickly. Price was totally reasonable for how long I spend there. Totally worth the 3 stars Michelin rating.

Amazing onsen experience – a must-visit in Beppu! Hyotan Onsen is one of the best hot spring experiences I’ve had in Beppu. The place is clean, well-maintained, and offers a wide variety of baths including sand baths, steam rooms, and open-air rotenburo. The water quality is excellent and you can really feel the minerals working on your skin. I wanted to go for the private baths—But it's fully booking it's recommend to book the private onsen in advance. There’s even a place to enjoy steamed food cooked with onsen heat, which was delicious. It’s easy to access and very welcoming for both locals and tourists. Don’t miss it if you’re visiting Beppu :)
Google J — Google review
We booked a private family bath, which was spacious and clean. The cost was 3,600 yen for 90 minutes.
Y. C — Google review
We came here while on a visit to the Hells of Beppu. We had wanted one of the outdoor private onsens, but it was still raining heavily. So we booked an hour in one of the indoor ones. The place was okay, but there was mold along the top of the room. The water was warm enough. However, the experience paled compared to the ryokan onsen experience we had the day before in Yifuin. Also, your hour starts immediately after you hand your payment over, including the time you need to take to walk to the next building in the pouring rain. They need to streamline the process. When you enter the reception area, you need to take off your shoes to walk a few metres to the desk. After collecting your key, you then have to put your footwear back on to go to the room. The same process is repeated when you return the key. Perhaps they should have a rubber pad for customers to walk to the desk and back to the entrance without taking off shoes.
Steven L — Google review
A good experience with many bathing options. You can also book a private bath where you are charged hourly. Be sure to book in advance if you are after the private baths.

Nice , clean Japanese Onsen. If you go with your partner suggest to take the private enclosed and open air , cost 2400 for 60 minutes , private , in or open air. There is a steam bath in the private rooms. Very nice relaxing , water nice and hot . Definitely worth the visit.

Japanese regional restaurant

Jigokumushikobo Kannawa is a renowned restaurant in Beppu, offering the traditional "hell-steaming" method of cooking food using thermal spring steam. This unique style of cooking utilizes the natural heat from geothermal energy to steam a variety of ingredients such as meat, seafood, and vegetables. The restaurant is located near the Jigoku Meguri and is a popular choice for visitors looking to experience this ancient cooking technique.
Interesting experience, DIY to cook your own meals with geothermal steam from beppu hotsprings. Fresh and healthy steamed meal, clam in butter cooked in geothermal steam was noteworthy, together with steam the butter became a light butter sauce to go with other steamed items. Other item raved was the seasoned rice wrapped in leaf. The flat udon noodles with miso was good too, it completes a hearty meal with the family. For those who need a stronger flavor kick, sprinkle a light amount of salt brings out the flavors more. Parking just behind the restaurant.

Start by taking a queue number at the reception. Then line up to select your order from the machines. Make payment there. Wait till your number is called by the reception prior to handing your meal tickets to them. This will be followed by getting timers from them and collecting your food. Followed the number indicated to head to the steamer area. Staff will hand you protective gear to insert the food into the steamer. When the timer rings, head back to collect the food. Extra costs for different types of sauces. Yuzu pepper sauce tasted good. Free seating. Credit card allowed. Free parking
Tracy Y — Google review
Awesome unique experience. Glad i was there with few people, so when i arrived i was able.to order immediately. To my rush, i ordered a meal for 2 :( Steamed foods are fresh and taste good. My only critique is that eventhough i don't order meal with shrimp. It tasted and smells like shrimp. But overall i had fun experience here
EC C — Google review
Food was ok but the waiting time was long. First, you get a queue number. Then you order you food on the ticket machine. And you wait for you queue to be called. While purchasing the food, you need to purchase the mandatory basket for steaming 🤔. When your number is called, you present your food tickets and collect your food. Then proceed to the steam counters to have your food steam for 15 mins. Limited parking lots available and there isn't any paid parking nearby. For the novelty of steaming your own food, ok la. Otherwise, there's better food options around the area. 😉
Choon T — Google review
That sounds like such a unique and fun dining experience! A restaurant where you can steam your own food using hot spring water is definitely something special. It combines the joy of cooking with the excitement of trying something new. The process of ordering from ahř⁶ vending machine, collecting your food, and then steaming it yourself adds a personal touch to the meal
Tom L — Google review
Came on Sunday and parking was difficult. We made many turns and finally saw some people leaving the parking. We had to take a number which is 90mins wait. With that, we can order our meals and wait for our turn to collect food for steaming. I find the food alright. Prawns seemed over cooked.
Wen — Google review
Enjoyed this place where you can steam your own food with the geothermal steam from the hot spring. Just purchase the meal coupons (I ordered set 2 and 17) and a ¥40 steaming fee coupon from the vending machine and get a number from the reception. When your number is called, pass your meal coupons to the counter and they will prepare the ingredients for you. It’s free-seating so after securing your seat, you bring your tray of ingredients to the steaming area according to the number on the timer provided. There, the staff will guide you through the process of wearing thick gloves and steaming your food for about 15 mins. They provide salt and ponzu as complimentary condiments but if you prefer other condiments like sesame sauce, you’ll need to add additional ¥200 per sauce.
Angela K — Google review
Love the steamed food here despite expecting the place to be gimmicky & mid, experience is definitely fun & interesting for visitors. Would definitely recommend to anyone coming to try their cheese fondue (16)!

Chinoike Jigoku, also known as Blood Pond Hell, is a striking thermal pool with dark-red water naturally colored by iron oxide. It is part of the popular Hell Tour which includes visits to various other hells like Sea Hell, Oni Rock Monk Hell, White Pond Hell, and more. The tour ticket allows access to all these sites and offers the opportunity to try out hot foot baths.
The hell: very nice weird color. A little more on the orange side when we visited (mid-October), but still super nice. Highly recommend making this the last of the 7 hells that you visit, as the restaurant Gokurakutei is next door and you can end your visit with a nice hearty meal after a round of the hells. Chinoike’s footbath is also very nice and may have been the hottest among the 7 hells of Beppu!
Karra L — Google review
Not too crowded. This hotspring is a bit further away from the rest. Need to have car or use public transportation. Not recommended for walking from other hotspring because its a slope road!

This and the Umi hell are my favourite. It also has one of the largest shopping area. Good to have it as your last stop to do all the shopping for hell that you want.
E K — Google review
Fair warning, Chinoike Jigoku is pretty far from the rest of the hells, and the other hells also have red pools, so if you’re short on time I probably would skip the two over here and instead visit the other hells that are lumped together. But if you have too much time like me and like seeing stuff it’s a pretty cool red steaming pool! 😂👍

This was the last of the 7 sevens hills for our visit. It is a 2 min walk from another of the hells but a 10 min drive to the first 5. If you plan on visiting all 7 hells, get the book as it's 2400 instead of 500x7 if you pay individually. As for this hell, it is a beautiful red color hense the name bloody hell. There is a great gift shop and footbath as well

Conveyor belt sushi restaurant
Sushi Meijin is a popular sushi-go-around restaurant situated on the ground floor of the Youme Town shopping center. In addition to a wide variety of sushi options, they also serve Ramen, Udon, Soba, and other delectable dishes. The restaurant is frequented by both locals and tourists, with some praising its fresh and generously portioned toppings. While there are touch panel ordering systems in place for certain items, the traditional conveyor belt system is still utilized.
Wanted to go to another sushi place but it was packed to the brim hence came here instead. Didnt regret at all. Sushi was at a very reasonable price and taste so good. Sake/liquors is cheap and good, def recommend to come if your around the area.. thank you!
ThorPiteh G — Google review
Food was reasonable ( 100yen for some of the sushi) and affordable. Service was good since most of the staff cant speak english but they had tried best to help us to order. Good place to visit.
Kw L — Google review
I don’t know why this place has such bad reviews. The sushi was delicious, the steamed egg and desserts were also superb. The place was super well-staffed and service was blazing fast. There was no queue and many seats available on a Sunday afternoon. You can get sushi from the conveyor belt or order on the tablet, which is available in multiple languages. Best of all we had 20 plates of sushi for just over ¥4000!
Himson N — Google review
We went here as the sushi restaurant we intended to go was closed. Despite the shop was friendly , inexpensive , the quality is really not satisfactory. But if you just want easy neighborhood sushi then you may still give it a try
