(原文) We took a wonderful tour of Carlyle House. Joe was our guide and he was full of information. We enjoyed the tour and hearing how the house was renovated and saved from being torn down. We enjoyed hearing about the reconstruction, seeing the original parts of the home, and furnishings from the colonial period. Highly recommend.
Stardancer 6 — Google review
(原文) A wonderful historic house to visit. Built even before Mount Vernon and restored beautifully. The tour guide was very knowledgeable. It is only a short walk to this house from the waterfront.
Rachel R — Google review
(原文) I got my Keys to the City pass from the visitor's bureau, which opened at 10:00 am. My first stop was the nearby Carlyle House, which honored my Keys coupon. I noticed that tours start on the hour. It was around 10:10, and I didn't want to wait 50 minutes. Without any special request, a personal tour was begun for me at 10:10. Wow! Geoff was a wonderful historian. I thought he must have a decade of experience, but he actually was fairly new to the property. The tour was informational. The house is well-preserved, and the artifacts were helpful in imagining the lives of the contemporaries. There was a slave sleeping quarters shown, and I would like even more information about the enslaved people who created the wealth, did all the building, and worked on maintenance. There was good information about the roles of women in managing the household.
John E — Google review
(原文) Great tour. A knowledgeable docent gave us a comprehensive tour of the house with early history of Alexandria and America.

强烈推荐参观卡莱尔故居 (原文) Tour the house, our guide made it educational and fun. Totally recommend to visit the Carlyle house

(原文) Guided tour of the house or self guided (free) admission of the basement. Great stop for those interested in the local history.
Ben I — Google review
(原文) The lady giving the tour was nice and the house was beautiful. On the downside, the whole tour was about Carlyle’s family living in the house. His role in the local slavery business and him owning many slaves was not addressed ONCE. Not a single mention about the slaves living in the house, their storys etc. and what cruelty they had to endure at this dark point in time in the American history. Very sad and frustrating.
Jstn. 0 — Google review
(原文) I've lived here all my life, and this was the first visit to this piece of history. The house has been beautifully restored to the original time it was built. The docents were so very knowledgeable, which helped to bring the house to life.

(原文) I used my Keys to the City pass and paid extra $3 for the guided tour. Gary was delightful!!! The displayed artifacts and Gary's narration gave a great view of day-to-day life in the 1700's. I was pleased to hear quite a bit of respectful and relevant information about the work of slaves in the tavern.
John E — Google review
(原文) The guide was sick when I came so it wasn’t as fun to just go around reading everything. Worth checking out if you like history. Included in the city key pass. The person in the shop was really informative and nice. I was the only one there at 11am on a Friday .
Marina B — Google review
(原文) Nice visit to the museum. The museum has been carefully preserved and it is really cool to walk the footsteps of our founding fathers. What really stands out is the people who work there. The guides are impressive with their knowledge of the history and we were really glad to have learned so much. They make it very interesting. It is a nice tour and you should put it on your itinerary.
Tara L — Google review
(原文) Stopped in Alexandria on our way down to Mt Vernon. Quaint museum and attached tavern/restaurant - Would highly recommend stopping by and paying $5/ticket to walk around or do the guided tour option.
Ben I — Google review
(原文) I opted for the guided tour and am so glad I did. The docent was a college professor and really knew her history. Terrific presentation and a well-preserved historic place. Well worth a visit.

(原文) Stopped in for a quick lunch after being told from multiple people that this is a "must see" place in Old Town Alexandria. And let me tell you, they were right! It was lunch time so there were a few groups of people. There was a long wait time to get a table mainly due to low staffing. But everyone I encountered was super friendly and welcoming. After reading the pamphlet about the history of the tavern, I asked the waitress if they still sold the rum punch because I didn't see it on the menu. She said that they do and would check if they had any made. Even though she was super busy helping so many tables, she made a special trip to the basement to get my drink. I felt so sorry for her because then other patrons started asking me what this drink is that looked so good and they started asking for it as well! All in all, I would certainly recommend and will be going again when I'm back in town. Good food, friendly staff and many, many years of history in this place!
Chad A — Google review
(原文) What a little gem of American history. Gary did a fantastic job of bringing that history to life with his tour. The museum is set up for self-guided tours, but if there's a docent available, you'll have a much better experience - the stories are great! Pat in the gift shop was super friendly and helpful as well. A bargain at only $5!

(原文) What a cool authentic time capsule of an early US Apothecary. Well worth the time! They even had a letter from Martha Washington ordering supplies from them. The upstairs work shop contains all the original ingredients, storage bins, and tools of the trade that have been there for over 200 years.

(原文) I had to pleasure of taking the poison tour that was offered by the museum, and I had so much fun learning about the way people in the late 1800 to early 1900s utilized what we now know was poisonous chemicals and herbs as unique treatment methods. It was so cool getting to tour the shop and storage spaces and learn about how the shop operated when it was still in business. I would love to come back and take another tour during their normal business hours to browse the exhibits, but Gray, our tour guide did a phenomenal job during our hour-long tour!

(原文) A nice building at a gorgeous river front location in Alexandria, VA. Spacious, with a lot of cozy boutiques and art shops, creative studios and workshops. The only thing that is missing there is a talent. And this is a must for any art center. (原文) This was unlike anything we have ever been to. The building is separated into private studios where each artist displays their work and you can purchase items. They had different mediums from beautiful scarves and hats to photographs to sculptures. We liked how unique each different studio was. Will definitely return on our next trip!

(原文) This place is Really really cool. It is a massive creative space with 3 whole floors of art studios and artists making, Exhibiting and selling some truly spectacular works of art, all within a historical building where they actually used to build torpedoes. There’s some poetry in the fact that a place that once only created instruments of Destruction is now a place of creativity and artistic beauty. If you really like art, or are looking for something nice to get for yourself or as a gift to someone you care about I totally recommend checking this place out. Even if you end up just looking around and the pieces that are for sale are outside your price range you will still be glad you came. Support your local artist and come check this place out.

(原文) Such a beautiful and historic landmark! The George Washington Masonic Memorial stands proudly over Alexandria and offers an amazing view from the top. The building itself is stunning, and the guided tour gives a lot of insight into both George Washington’s life and the Masonic history behind it. (原文) The George Washington Masonic Memorial @ Alexandria is a neoclassical shrine dedicated to George Washington who was a Masonian himself. (原文) Bummer of a time today, as I was very excited to explore and learn about Masons and GW’s involvement. Instead of learning about what Masons are and how meetings work and what their focus is, and how and why GW got involved, we were simply shuffled to each floor and told to look around. Each floor was vastly underwhelming, only a few notable pieces, such as a desk “thought to have been used by Washington.” They have a strand of his supposed hair, which is a big highlight apparently. With little explanation, we looked at bizarre costumes various masons and affiliate groups wear. View was nice, for $20 a hard pass. Wildly weird time. Wife is convinced this place is haunted. We live locally… any visitors reading this, skip unless you’re a Mason.

Loved it!! Wonderfully modern and air-conditioned, so makes for a great stop in the summer. Lots of George Washington artifacts, not just Masonic related. Although the Masonic history and chambers were really cool! Tour was $20/ea for 1 hour guided. Our guide, José, was fantastic! Very informative and such and interesting place. About 10 in our tour group. Book online ahead of time to guarantee entry. Ample free parking. It's rentable for events. Cool old "magical" elevators and don't forget the observation deck! The view is spectacular! I can't believe this place wasn't just crawling with people, but it was pretty quiet. Tour tickets grant you access for the entire day, so stay alls long as you like. Don't miss the clock that sat at Washington's bedside when he died. The attending physician cut the weight to mark the time for eternity.

(原文) What an incredible hidden gem in Alexandria. I've lived here for 13 years and I just now learned about the museum thanks to my friend who grew up in the area. There is so much history surrounding us and I'm glad I got to learn more about the black history that makes Alexandria what it is today. (原文) Unfortunately, my visit to the Alexandria Black History Museum was not the greatest. -March 18, 2023 Based on visits to other local Black American Museums, the expectations were not met. The location was very small with limited items on display. There was no timeline of events reflective of those experiencing the hardships of being a Black American in Alexandria, Virginia. The use of terms like slavery or slaves was clearly absent from a majority of the displays and exhibit descriptions. Having to pay for a self-guided tour of a single room of displays and a short video presentation was quite disheartening. *The Howard County African American Culture Center in Columbia Maryland is similar in size, but was free of charge and was organized in a fashion to provide a clearer depiction of Black Americans during those time periods.

I’ve been to several and this is worth seeing. A lot of history in Alexandria VA especially as it pertains to 1k to 2k slaves being sold to the Deep South from this building a year in the 1800’s. Free if you live in Alexandria. A small cost if you don’t.

(原文) We finally made it to the Freedom House Museum, a celebration of freedom and achievement located in a house that once auctioned enslaved people. The museum effectively conveys the tragedy of slavery while sharing the stories of those in bondage, then the progress made by African Americans (especially by Virginians). Few people understand the enormous size of domestic human trafficking that took place before the Civil War, and the Freedom House Museum corrects this. A few notes: -The folks working there are very knowledgeable & can add a lot to your experience. Talk to them! -There is free parking in the back of the building, and handicap parking in the front. -Inexpensive entry fee (we were glad to support the museum’s mission!). You’ll leave uplifted: please don’t miss out!

离开之前我买了两本书——《Uncommon Ground: Archaeology and Early Africa American, 1650-1800》和《Alexandria's The Freedmen's Cemetery》;自由的遗产。 (原文) Was closed when I visited Old Town but I plan to visit again. The African American Museum occupies what use to be the offices of Franklin and Armfield who were the biggest slaves traders in Alexandria. Armfield bought the slaves and then sent them to Franklin in Mississippi and Louisiana to be sold at a higher price. By the 1830s they were offen selling a 1000 slaves a year. This made them the largest slave-trading company in the US intill 1836. Addition - Normally costs about five dollars but it turned out, as a resident of Alexandria, I got in free! A lot of the exhibits dealt with slavery/African American history via first person experiences on top of general history. Also it helped that I had visited some of the sites mentioned and knew some of the stories already. Helped me put things together. There was also a art exhibit. Nice little museum. Before I left I bought two books - Uncommon Ground : Archaeology and Early African American, 1650-1800 and Alexandria's The Freedmen's Cemetery ; A Legacy of Freedom. So I ended up with a lot books when I got home.

(原文) The city of Alexandria is great at acknowledging it’s past with signs and monuments throughout town highlighting a very complex history. The recently re-opened Freedom House summarizes and brings to life Alexandria’s history with the trade of enslaved people. (原文) All of the Athenaeum staff was excellent to work with. During the initial planning stages, Veronica and Richard were my main points of contact, both of whom were very helpful answering questions. They were happy to entertain our questions both via email and during the various trips to check out the space. The contract process was fairly straight forward and fortunately renting out the space includes both the art gallery and the outside garden (it rained on our wedding day and the ceremony was initially going to take place in the garden). A few days before the wedding, we were informed that Amanda would be the staffer on hand on the actual wedding day. I sent Amanda my proposed timeline and we reviewed it over the phone. She was willing to assist with flow of show and confirming chair and floral deliveries/set up. She advised us of some renovations that were taking place in the alley behind the garden, which is where the ceremony was originally going to take place. While the staff had not previously informed us of the planned renovation, it all worked out in the end. Amanda emailed me photos of the renovations, offered alternate solutions to ensure the scaffolding wouldn’t be as visible, emailed the contractor to ensure they would be done with the renovations for the day prior to our scheduled photo time and ceremony start time, and offered to be at the venue early to ensure that everything was clean. When I realized it was likely going to rain on the wedding day, I emailed Amanda asking for a quick discussion on a rain plan. She contacted me right away to confirm a time and we spoke the morning of the wedding to come up with a rain plan. She handled the new set up with both the chair rental company and the florist. The set up came out beautifully. Also, one of the photographers left a water behind and Amanda emailed me about the item so I was able to retrieve it the next day. I would definitely rent this space again!

(原文) I had the pleasure of visiting during their recent 250th Anniversary celebration in Old Town Alexandria. I’ve always walked past it and now I finally got a chance to come in. There was a very educational docent discussing the history of the Friendship Firehouse Museum as well as cool artifacts. I didn’t get a chance to go upstairs but I look forward to coming back to explore more. The highlight (for me besides seeing the old fire “truck” inside was that the volunteers were hosting a little kids station in the alley next to it. Kids could hold a small hose to put out fires on a wooden house - a very cool activity if I had small children. One young child was very small indeed that the hose got the best of him and what transpired next was a scene straight out of a Tom & Jerry cartoon where the kid tripped and the hose started flailing about and spraying everyone in line - kids, parents, and bystanders! Kids were laughing, adults were thankful for a cool refresher in the 99 degree weather, and the volunteers jumped into action and took control of the hose. Everyone was laughing so I hope the kid was ok and that memory will stick with me for awhile of the Friendship Firehouse. Hopefully their next big anniversary is just as fun!

(原文) Last year my wife and I were walking the new bridge. (原文) When the Civil War started and the Union took Alexandria many escaped slaves, called Contraband, poured into the city to escape their former masters. This overcrowding caused a high mortality rate. The soldiers seized a undeveloped plot of land and turned it into a cemetery. More than 1,700 Freedmen and Contrabands were buried here, Of course it was forgotten, built on, and many of the graves were destroyed. Rediscovered in 1996 it is now a monunment, From what I understand about 500 graves still exist and many of the markers on the ground had only 'Grave Of An Adult' on it. BUT the lists of names suggest more knowledge of who was buried. Mostly because many of their descendants were found. Oh, is that crow or a raven?

(原文) If you're looking for a historic authentic experience, this place is a must. The outside of the red brick building caught our attention, and we decided to try. Inside, there was the Colonial charm. We sat down in one of the side rooms. Our waiter was quick and attentive. (原文) We had a great experience at Alexandria Volkswagen with Dean Reyes. He took the time to sit down with us, listened to what we were looking for, and even had the car we wanted ready and pulled up for a test drive. Since we had our own financing, the process was quick and smooth. The only disappointment was having to pay $900 for brakes and rotors so the car could pass Maryland inspection. Overall, Dean’s customer service was excellent and made the buying experience enjoyable.

(原文) I had a great experience working with Zahra and Jasmin. I saw the car online and we were able to work a deal over the phone. I didn’t want to drive an hour and a half to play the car buying game. Zahra gave me all of the OTD info in less than 30 minutes of calling. They matched the trade offer I already had for my vehicle from another dealer. By the time I got there, I was in and out in less than an hour. Jasmin was very polite and professional. We wasted no time and she got me through finance quickly. She also gave me some good info about the Factory and CPO warranty that came with the car. My only dislike was that I couldn’t use my own financing to get the advertised price. That being said, the car was in great shape, had 40k less miles than others we had test drove, and was priced below what I had seen other places. Happy with the deal overall. Ask for Zahra.

(原文) I just took my car here for the first time since moving to the area and am really happy I did. I took it in for a simple alignment (I typically do my own work on cars aside from tires and alignments). I have a 13 year old GTI that's my daily driver - it's rough on the outside and inside, but well taken care of mechanically. The service advisors were super nice and polite on drop off and the alignment was done in a few hours. Picked up the car and it's driving great, but the cherry on top is that they went the extra mile to wash my poor cosmetically-neglected car, all for less than I've paid at previous dealers for less thoughtful service. I'll definitely be taking my car and any future VWs here for service again.

If you know Alexandria you know a parade means fun and traffic issues. No way for me. So I decided to ride my bike in. I parked at Gravelly Point just north of National airport and rode down to Alexandria. Once my errand was done I rode farther south. And I was amazed. Alexandria got rid of all the old run down buildings and created a beautiful park and living area along with extending the bike path. It was a beautiful ride. By the time I returned to Gravelly Point I had done about 15 miles, had a great time, got lots of exercise and marveled at the renewal projects!
(原文) The bottom levels are very very informative on the history of slavery and black culture. If you listen to lots of rock n’ roll and old jazz and soul like I do, or if you watch sports like I do, this place is a GOLD MINE. REAL ARTIFACTS. Like you walk in and CHUCK BERRY’S 1972 Cadillac is right there! The Memorabilia here is CRAZY, including Billie Holiday’s dress, Whitney Houston’s dress, Willie May’s jersey, and so much more. So much history and information to take in. There’s so much to see. I absolutely loved those exhibits. I can’t believe I almost forgot… the food is INCREDIBLE. The best fried chicken I’ve ever had,, maybe even the best chicken I’ve ever had in general. I went specifically for the annual needlework show that is held there each March. The house was closed for the show. However, if you are interested in the fiber arts, I highly recommend this show. Also, the Pope-Leighey House, a Usonian style house by Frank Lloyd Wright is on the property and is possible to tour. We'll worth seeing if you are a Wright fan. The gardens were not in bloom, but even given this, they did not seem extensive. Woodlawn did not seem particularly welcoming to people with physical restrictions. Highly recommend a presentation by Elizabeth Reese for your group on the topic you are exploring here. We attended a Lafayette focused talk, she was excellent on the topic. The permanent structure tent for presentations, lectures and I assume social events (Weddings) was beautifully appointed with all the needed audiovisual equipment. Don’t hesitate to use this venue, great service and staff on hand. Parking is close to the venue, just adjacent the tented pavilion.

(原文) A must-see for architecture lovers! The Frank Lloyd Wright Pope-Leighey House is an understated architectural treasure. This Usonian (“US-Utopian”) home offers a fascinating glimpse into Wright’s vision for affordable, beautifully designed living. The 45-minute tour is a great crash course in his design philosophy—minimalist, functional, and attuned to nature. Don’t miss the list of Wright’s famous “No-Nos”—it’s both amusing and insightful. The story of Marjorie Leighey, who fought to preserve this home, is truly inspiring.

(原文) I've visited the Frank Lloyd Wright house about 8 times, 2 in the last year. Oddly enough, every time I visit, there are people who not only love Frank Lloyd Wright but have visited a bunch of his other houses and have a great deal of previous knowledge about the architect. The young lady who does the visit is a current teacher in the public school system in Virginia and she is passionate, fun and knowledgeable about her topic. I highly recommend visiting first Woodlawn Plantation then doing the 5 minute walk to the Pope house. Even the gift shop has fun stuff. I love the Frank Lloyd Wright stained glass drinking glasses. I bought a whole set!

There are limited tour slots so it may be advantageous to book your tours ahead of time - some persons that showed up that day were unable to tour, too.
(原文) Ahoy matey! What an enjoyable experience during our Potomac River cruise on the Tall Ship Providence this afternoon! First, there's parking available nearby for about $20/day and just a minute walk from the ship. Restrooms are available on the dock and they were clean. There's a dock bar with plenty of seats as well. The boat has a bar and restroom, although we didn't use either I saw other guests using them so I assumed they're perfectly fine. We had tickets purchased in advance and arrived about 30 minutes before the sail. The crew were fantastic. Polite, professional and provided an educational opportunity within a casual, fun environment while keeping safety a priority. Each member we interacted with was kind and wanted to talk with us, not once did we feel uncomfortable or a burden. Additionally, we enjoyed chatting with other guests throughout the excursion. Phil, who led our historical tours, is amazing. He was full of knowledge and appreciated questions. Phil explained the real ship's history, the replica's journey, the historical crew's days working on board, and many enjoyable facts. We left with a genuine appreciation for the ship. The sail adventure was about 2 hours. At times we felt the motion from another boat's wake however it was never especially choppy. Those who get motion sickness easily may want to take something ahead of time to avoid feeling ill, however I was able to breathe through my sickness without getting too ill. If you're interested in history while seeking a different adventure, definitely check out the Tall Ship Providence! You'll feel safe, learn a lot and have a sincerely pleasant experience. PS: If you enjoyed your adventure don't forget to tip the crew to show appreciation, we happily did via the QR code! Thank you to the Captain and entire crew for such a great adventure on the Potomac!

(原文) The ship is beautiful and the trip is funny. But is really not deserve 55$, spend two hours on the river, here’s no enough seats and shade place, explore under the sunshine almost two hours. Is not have many “history” about this ship can share with you, but the crew is super nice and professional, they will let you explore the tail and lower level of the ship. The restroom on the ship is broke, so make sure you use the restroom before you boarding. However, I still not recommend you pay for this if you want a fun, quick tour on the river, maybe water taxi is a better choice.

Last Sunday, my family took a ride on Tallship Providence! It was my son‘s sixth birthday and he wanted to do something different. We had such a lovely time! The crew was accommodating and kind and full of information. I would definitely recommend us if you’re down in the old town area and want to try something different. It was interesting to watch them work the lines and sail under wind power. Cruise was about 2 hours on the Potamac. There was a cash bar on the ship, and parking nearby was easy to find. Beautiful evening on the Potomac River. Passionate and experienced crew made the sunset cruise a fun adventure. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys history and being on the water in this gorgeous location where it’s easy to spot the Capitol and Washington Monuments from the water. Dining and shopping options are endless and The Providence is conveniently located at the docs close to parking (but arrive early to secure a spot since the lots full up quickly on weekends.) Support The Providence through your patronage and also donations. A great evening that will not disappoint! The people love their ship, and want you to have a memorable time. Lastly, a special thank you to Caroline, the Captain, and entire crew. We will come back soon.

(原文) Tickets run for $50 for adults and $40 for kids. Captain and crew were awesome! Set sail down the Potomac and back again, asking as many historical questions as your heart desires. It is a modernized version of the original so a small motor may move you before they let loose the sails. Don't worry - there is no plank to be forced on and plenty of life jackets for all.

(原文) This is a great addition to the George Washington Mount Vernon estate. (原文) One of the best parts of Mount Vernon. They keep it in perfect condition, top quality museum about George Washington. At the entrance there is a gigantic head of George Washington that has a 3D visual effect and seems to turn to look at you as you move. The lighting and sound effects in each room make the experience more immersive. The best is the 4D movie of the revolutionary war, it fake snows inside the theater and there are speakers under the chairs that make it shake when cannons go off with light effects hidden all over the theater.

The museum is done really really well. It documents the whole life of George Washington. It’s incredible to see the life size impressions of him at the various stages of his life. The attention to detail is exquisite. Not enough can be said about him and all he did to father our country. How he walked away from power: twice!
