It was about 1pm and we were shown to our table with a menu to share when we were sat “facing each other”! There were various options including 2 course promotions etc. As I like any steak so I went straight for the rump served with dauphinois potatoes, caramelised onions etc which seemed an excellent combination. My wife preferred fish and selected coley (subsequently discovered it’s cheap alternative for cod etc) with some accompaniments. I asked for medium since I hate rare with a passion. We were both quite hungry by the time our meals arrived and we were both a little underwhelmed when they did. For me and the rest of the world dauphinois potatoes are quite distinctive sliced potatoes cooked and served in a rich white sauce not what you can see in the picture below. The steak however looked okay until I tried to cut it and I realised that whilst rare meat is usually very tender and easy to cut this one was impossible even with a serrated blade! I couldn’t cut it and gave up, my wife tried and was slightly more successful but we’d had enough and waited for the inattentive staff to come and see how we were doing. I managed to attract their attention, 1 came over and I explained our dissatisfaction and requested an explanation from the Maitre ‘D. She disappeared with the plate and we waited and waited and waited. With patience worn out we went to the reception and realised the waitress had not even registered our complaint because the Maitre’D was talking with another customer. Unfortunately my patience was exhausted so I barged in, pointing to the plate, paid for the drinks and left. I have since discovered the owners have just published their first annual return so whilst there are many recommendations going back years they DO NOT apply to the current owner. Finally even with 2 electric radiators next to us it was absolutely FREEZING. Improvements required urgently.

Starved by a long walk around the river bank we craved a hearty Sunday lunch. The consistency of the food quality is immense. My wife had the Chicken Gyros, she normally has the Pork, but decided on a change. The chicken was both succulent and crispy, so full of flavour. I had the Keflico for the second time, and it was amazing, just like the first one I had a few weeks ago. Again, I dont how they did it, but yet again the flavours put your senses to good use. We really can't rate this Taberna highly enough, we just wish we knew about it sooner, we've been missing out. Food is always lovely. It had been a while since we had been so I suggested it to mum today for lunch. The menu is plentiful with lots of specials on the boards around the cafe. It is small and can get busy in the summer they have a lovely outdoor space aswell with extra tables. Today mum had a pear walnut and Stilton salad which looked lovely and according to mum was lovely. I had a bacon & Brie toastie which was done on a thick slab of tiger bread and very substantial. The server was very helpful with my intolerances and said they would request my food with no slaw on the side as to not contaminate my food. I have Ulcerative colitis and have to live by a low fodmap diet. I know my tolerance levels. We then followed our lunch with a Victoria sponge cake to share which was lovely and moist and yummy. We have always had such fantastic food and experiences there, the last time I strayed from what I knew & loved, was the Tomahawk at Ponteland years ago, and it wasn't up to scratch for me. However, there was no need to be worried, we had 3 courses, starters we shared and had little tastes of, mains & a couple of deserts. Never seen anything so strange in all my time, a bacon roll should be served on a morning roll not a dried out ciabbata roll, that was as hard as a rock. Customers who had ordered two breakfasts before us were only given there’s as we were leaving and again no apology to those customers, surely things are pre cooked and kept hot …. Yet it takes 1 hour to service breakfasts. The shop also had no bags like not a single carrier bag, not a single bag for life, nothing … bizarre watching old ladies juggling groceries out to the car, with no staff in sight to help and no signs up warning customers that there was ZERO bag stock, yes most people will have a bag for life but not everyone remembers. Overall a very poor experience, over £10 for the worst bacon rolls I have ever tasted wish I had sent them back and got a refund, not worth waiting 45 mins, if we had more time we would have used one of the local cafe’s or bistro’s

I always ask for scraps of batter on my chips and they never put batter on without having to be reminded, which would be fine, but when they make you wait outside you can’t remind them, and so it’s missing and you don’t realise until you get home. The fish is always just a bit soggy but the main problem is that the food tastes like it’s been fried in old oil that’s been reheated numerous times. The chips had a lovely taste and the kebab was thinly cut and tasted delicious and the creamy garlic sauce was top notch too! Very fast delivery (especially for a Friday night) and easy to order. It was a bit more expensive than our usual takeaways, but it’s well worth the extra money for everything tasting this great, fresh and yummy. Pleased we found this…..Pizza Corner is our new takeaway favourite :)

We stayed at the lovely Northumberland Arms in Felton. Originally a Coaching Inn built by Hugh Percy, 3rd Duke of Northumberland, in the 1820s, it’s now a brilliant cosy pub with a great drinks selection. There are also some gorgeous rooms to stay in. Ours had a super comfy gigantic bed and some quirky bathing facilities. I know I’m biased having grown up in Newcastle but I think Northumberland and the North East coast is one of the best places in the UK. We took a day trip out to Bamburgh stopping off briefly in Alnmouth to grab a crab sandwich from Scott’s deli. We had dinner both nights in the Northumberland arms and it was exceptional. I had one of the best pork chops of my life and my wife had a delicious pasta dish. The portion sizes were huge. The next day we had the Sunday roast and it may be one of the best ones I’ve had out ever! I couldn’t fault anything about our stay and would very much recommend it if you looking for some time away

The apartment itself was nice - clean and comfortable. There was however a problem with the toilet which constantly ran and flushed. The noise kept us awake all night. I reported this the next morning and it seems this was a known problem however we had not been warned beforehand. Subsequent complaints to management were met with indifference (apparently we should have reported it at the time however there was no one on site when we discovered the problem late at night) and gaslighting (apparently the toilet had been "fixed" a couple of days prior to our stay). No real apology or acknowledgement of the disruption or problem from the staff. This turned out to be a very expensive night with the overpriced, tasteless food which we also had in the pub that evening. I had the vegetarian Thai red curry which basically consisted of mange tout, a few slivers of red pepper, tasteless red curry sauce and a tiny portion of rice for £18. My partner had the burger which he also said was tasteless. In total we spent about £150 for one night with accommodation and food and it was absolutely not worth it. I cannot stress enough how bad our experience was and strongly advise others to seek other accommodation/restaurants. There are some fantastic hotels and restaurants in Northumberland....this is very definitely NOT one of them.

The coffee was perfect and can't fault the service. The restaurant was spotlessly clean, the employees both in the restaurant and on the information desk were polite, served us and answered our queries quickly. The accommodation was excellent, the setting very beautiful and the staff were excellent and so helpful. Our room was spotless and very comfortable. They even had a bed and toy ready for our dog . I can't rate the team highly enough. They really went out their way to make a special day even more so. The breakfasts were great with plenty of choice and the wedding meal was excellent. Every part of the day was perfect . Highly recommended and thank you to all the staff who worked tirelessly.

So many places close-by to visit, Alnwick, Amble and not forgetting the Farne Islands.
