The service was very friendly, all the staff present were so helpful with us, like Alexandra especially as a big walk-in table on a Saturday afternoon, they were very welcoming As for the food, everything was so delicious and filling, they have a wide choice of meals so there is something for everyone, they also had quite a few gluten-free options expanding their palette. I had the seafood risotto and it was so flavoursome, the drinks aswell were beautifully presented! We had fish (haddock) and chips served with mushy peas and bread/butter and chicken curry with rice and flatbread. Good size portions without being too big. Flatbread a bit greasy, not sure it was necessary really, but lots of chicken in a tasty sauce. Served by two lovely ladies and a delightful Italian work experience student. Will definitely revisit. You really need to book even on a Tuesday lunchtime.

The tearoom is very quaint and has a great atmosphere with views to Battle Abbey and market square. The chef then came out with a beautifully made selection of finger sandwiches, hot sausage roll and the prettiest delectable cakes, scones and lemon dessert which really was deliciously made. Such a relaxing afternoon in an exquisite well loved restaurant, which is a credit to Battle and its community. The first public house I saw that was named on Google Maps was The Chequers. Reviews recommended this pub. After a 90 minute drive via Rye, we parked at the Battle Abbey car park. English Heritage members park for free. For us it was £4 for six hours. From the car park to The Chequers is a seven minute walk. The pub has a car park, but we chose Battle Abbey as we were shopping for books after dining. On entering the pub a few minutes after 12 noon, it was empty, but for the host. Our early arrival allowed us a window seat, and a quick delivery of two Shandy's and the menu. The lunch menu is not extensive, but in my opinion, doesn't need to be. There was enough choice to satisfy most needs, and as everything is made to order, keeps it simple. We both had a fish dish. Sea bass, and pan fried cod with tiger prawns. The accompanying vegetables and fruit, and the manner in which they were presented made the meals really special for us. The desserts are £10 each, which we thought a little expensive. However we have to check ourselves, and remember this is not the 1970s Angel Delight era. The desserts were superb. My wife, who is a good cook, couldn't praise the food enough. The interior of the premises is 'Olde Worldly' with walls decorated with some photographs, a wooden torso and a violin encased in a black birdcage hanging over the bar. But don't let the quirkiness put you off. The young lady who served us was extremely pleasant, good humoured, efficient and has a great personality. If you have the same experience as us, you will not be disappointed.

This was a good decision as the parking is easier and has a more contemporary feel to the place. From the waitress the place has been opened for about 8 month now. it has a funky old-school style to the place and with various lamps made and out of bazaar items (which you can buy). there were 3 staff who all seemed well adverse to the menu, wine list and ran of well rehersed service. the menu choice has a wide array of food. if seafood isn't your thing then there is more than that on offer, including steak you cook yourself on a rock. the prices were reasonable and the portion sizes plentiful. a good selection of wines and drinks were available and again for good prices. we started off with king prawns and mussels. the prawns were a good size and were plated with a fresh salad. water was provided automatically with our drinks which was a nice touch. mussels were amazing. large, sweet and juicy on a lovely creamy sauce. mains were the pork belly which was a good size and cooked well, and a seafood mix. This was priced at around £17 and came with a fresh selection of seafood. puddings were a chocolate and hazelnut cake which was light and smooth. not too rich but enough for a choccy hit. sorbet was priced per scoop. sizes were large and well worth the price. staff were a credit to the owners and from the experience this is on the top 5 places to take friends out for a decent meal. a good night had and a well deserved 5 stars

At first I thought it was a nice little pub, we were sat in a quiet cosy area down some steps which I thought was perfect for my daughter to contain her (if needed). It is tucked out the way through narrow country lanes. I phoned to make a reservation and the young lady that took my call was extremely polite, friendly and helpful. On arrival the manager greeted us and sat us at our table she was also extremely welcoming. My wife had the beef roast and was more than impressed. The staff were excellent and worked their socks off, as it was very busy (completely understand why it was packed). The pub has a mixture of a bar only area, bar area with tables and a large restaurant area situated at the far end of the building. We visited on a rather cold night but there was a welcoming large fire in the bar seated area. Having not booked we were asked if we’d like the restaurant which initially appeared a good option as the bar area was full. However it was a little chilly and empty so we opted to return to the seated area and wait for a table. The bar staff were very accommodating and offered us some seats to await a table which came quickly. The menu was large with specials posted on a board with a good overall choice of items. Food arrived quickly and was served hot and full of taste. I would offer a full 5 starts except there were a few pointers. Our table was located next to the doors Leading to the restaurant area. One door however had been damaged earlier which caused it remain open leaving a nasty chill to roll into the room around our legs. The landlord was very good and attempted to resolve the issue but it did somewhat make the area a little uncomfortable for a short while. The premises appears to have had some remedial work completed in the last year with new owners taking over. This however appears to have not followed through to both male or female toilets. Such a shame as with a revamp of the facilities it would be a lot more pleasant. Overall, 5 stars for staff, couldn’t fault them, 5 stars for food and welcome and bar area, but 4 stars for facilities and the annoying draft. Looking forward to perhaps visiting when it’s warmer to make the most of the restaurant and outdoor area.

We ended up here without reservation, which was no issue. We were seated and we choose a drink, 1 entry course to start and 3 main courses. The waiting between all these was way too long. We are travelling with a toddler which makes the waiting seem even more longer. We were seated upstairs and when we went downstairs to use the toilet I noticed that they were not that busy. The reason our food took so long was because they keep.catering for take away! I get that that is part of your business,but to make the people that actual visit your place and choose to spend time there wait a ling time seems like an odd choice. After 1 and 30 minutes and having just finished our meal we wanted to go. It took us another 15 minutes waiting at the till, before any member of the staff bothered coming over and that was because the chef noticed us and pointed it out to the waiter. I am not the person to walk away without paying, but another 10 minutes would have pushed me over the edge. Long story short? Food is great and the setting also but due to long waiting times I would order take away before showing up to claim a seat and eat it there.

But we’ll made and really happy with the taste. Pineapple Thai rice - lacked flavour, was a rather small portion as well, could have had more of it, needed more nuts as well. I understand that presentation of Thai Orchid is focused as bowls and a smart outlook but pineapple rice is renowned to be known to severed in a pineapple, many places in Thailand and event 5 star hotels and restaurants would do the same. The dish lacked flavour. Chill basil prawns - very well made, flavours were there and hit all the pallet. Was fragrant and spicy, prawns and veg were cooked very well, had great flavours and combinations. Overall I would recommend Thai orchid , it is a great place to visit to enjoy authentic Thai food, it is on the rather pricier scale for what the portion size is. Unfortunately when we got there, there was a wedding party so there was minimum parking available. I came across it late on Friday night when my family was turned away from the place we booked in Hastings due to the burst water main. Helen made up a room for us while we were driving up.
