Disappointed. We would not return, in summary we found hotel and restaurant to be overpriced with average food at best and a small room but with kind and friendly staff.
The positives: great welcome despite arrival around 11am, lovely staff in all parts. A very good breakfast (the tray plus toast and egg station thing was totally satisfactory, excellent local produce) better than dinner in our opinion.
The negatives:
1. Dinner, cooked by the sous chef, the plaice was overcooked so was cotton wool inside, the pork was also overcooked but remained tender and was a pretty miserable portion to my mind. The food and wine list were over priced and the menu less interesting than at the other restaurants we visited.
2. The room was very expensive, over priced and small, (Large Hampton meaning bigger than Cozy Hampton - that is a quote) the blind curtain was a bit short, king size bed just about fitted. The bathroom was small, basic and the decoration tired. To our minds the room decor is uninspired and unwelcoming, unlike the public areas which are nice.
I want to be absolutely fair here and demonstrate beyond my opinion regarding price. We were at night 4 of our trip. Our stay at Gallivant was £435 B and B, including £80 (total for 2) towards dinner, so £355 B and B in a Large Hampton, in addittion our extras came to £212 for lunch (1 plate each), 3 cocktails and 2 x 1/2 bottles of lower end wines. £647 total.
Please compare
Night 1, Hever Castle B and B, Astor wing cost £240. Stunning room, super king bed, great bathroom, views, lounge for residents and barrel vaulted dinning room, great staff. Even had fresh local honeycomb at breakfast. 5* and superior in every way to Gallivant. Dinner Wheatsheaf Pub, cost about £170, fantastic sea bass, crispy skin, perfectly cooked wonderful service.
Nights 2 and 3, 2 nights accom in Rye £170/night at Tea House, Large room, super king bed, lovely bathroom in period property. Dinner Landgate Bistro, £183, dinner Number Fifty £112 inc a £35 wine. - this restaurant is really worth an effort to visit, fantastic. Both dinners superior cooking and more interesting than at Harry's and were miles cheaper.
I could go on about breakfast cost to complete the picture but go to Fig in Rye for brunch and see for yourselves.
Sorry Gallivant and Harry's, having had such high expectations from reviews and recommendations, we felt let down and underwhelmed.
