There’s a slight, steady incline that I wasn’t fully prepared for, but it added a nice bit of challenge without being overwhelming. The trailhead map was hard to read, and I initially thought it was a short loop, but it actually continues onward up the mountain—so I eventually turned back. The views are beautiful, especially looking out toward downtown Santa Fe, and the mix of greenery and high desert landscape made the walk feel meditative. I even spotted plenty of wildlife along the way. A couple of notes: the parking area is small and tucked up against a residential neighborhood, and I did notice one pile of dog waste on the trail—so hopefully visitors will be mindful and pack out after their pets. We entered the trail at marker 28. There was only one other car parked, so lots of parking. There was a sign warning, do not leave valuables in car because it is a high break-in area. The Dale Ball trail was a moderate level hike with amazing views at castle rock and Picacho peak.

There were only a few people up there on a Sunday night in November. I'm a novice hiker and I'd say this is moderate difficulty. It would certainly be hard on a very hot or very cold day. What might make it hard for some is the steep slope and rocky terrain. Many people recommend hiking shoes. I don't own a pair, so I wore my all purpose On Clouds and was fine, but can see why you'd want more traction. I saw several other hikers wearing basic gym shoes. You do have to be careful on the way down, especially if it's dark by then. It's difficult to tell where the trail is after dark. Parking: there's room to park on either side of the street near the trail head but that fills up quickly. There's a sign about it being a high prowl area, which warns you to remove all valuables from your vehicle. My truck had a bunch of stuff in it because I'm moving. I covered it all with a blanket and locked it, but was worried about it the whole time. But there was a relatively stable trickle of people coming in and out of the trail so someone would've had to be pretty bold to smash my windows. The exterminator is really nice and worked with me. I plug my drains so they don't crawl up and keep my apartment spotless. I still see about one a night/day but it's nice to know I have the support of the complex. It's affordable living for how beautiful they are. This is just one huge draw back.
