Jeju

Jeju province encompasses the South Korean island of Jeju in the Korea Strait. It's known for its beach resorts and volcanic landscape of craters and cavelike lava tubes. Hallasan Mountain, a dormant volcano, features hiking trails, a crater lake at the 1,950m summit and nearby Gwaneumsa Temple. The Geomunoreum Lava Tube System includes 7km-long Manjanggul Cave, created centuries ago when Hallasan was still active.

Seongsan Ilchulbong, also known as "castle hill," is a unique volcanic tuff cone located in the east of Jeju Island. Formed by hydrovolcanic eruptions 5 thousand years ago, this crater-style peak resembles an ancient castle and offers stunning views from its summit. Designated as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, it has become famous for providing breathtaking sunrises and sunsets to countless travelers.
This was an amazing hike for my daughter and I. Not for the weak. Lots of steps. I mean LOTS. It takes about 25 minutes or more to reach the top. Great views. And maybe 20 minutes to hike down. Suggestions are carrying a hand fan and having a change of clothing with you to change into. You will sweat. And the humidity can be really thick and heavy.
Gary — Google review
The walk up to the summit can be tiring, but it is easy to manage with plenty of rest points along the way. Complete the walk by sunset to get amazing views at golden hour.
Shawn L — Google review
Terrific views of the coastline as well as Hallasan. Majestic scenery as the light hits at certain angles. A manageable hike up to the summit is well worth seeing the crater and the open sea.
Edward T — Google review
There’s an entry ticket 🎫 to climb the summit. It’s bit tiring but there are multiple rest points, washrooms on the way. The weather was extremely hot so it became bit difficult 😞 to climb but once you reach the top, tge view is totally 💯 worth it! This peak is actually called the centre of Jeju which divides it in 2 parts. Definitely recommended but do carry sunglasses 🕶️ and pther heat protectant 👍🏻

We checked in the Coop City Hotel the night before and climbed the Seongsan Ilchulbong the following morning after having a leisurely breakfast buffet. We are not early risers and did not try to catch the sunrise which was probably blocked by the October early morning clouds. The ticket to go up was KRW5000 pp. You have the option to go down towards the beach for free. It is a long climb with lots of stairs, but it is worth it. Every once in a while, we would take a break to admire and take photos of the view. The view only gets better as you go higher. And we had perfect late morning weather, sunny with a cool breeze. It was very rewarding to reach the summit and admire the views of the town, ocean and crater. The summit has lots of wood steps for sitting and relaxing. October is not too crowded. You go down using a different set of stairs. The view is as good going down as it was going up. I usually find going down tougher on my knees, but this descent was pretty easy and fast. I think the pitch of the steps matched my stride length. Once we got to the bottom, we headed down to the beach to admire the waves and view of the Ilchulbong from sea level. The water was too rough for divers, but there were ladies selling raw shellfish which we passed on. I would definitely recommend Seongsan Ilchulbong if you are physically capable of handling the climb. It was one of the highlights of our 4-night Jeju trip. Note: there is a defibrillator and a toilet partway up the climb. Also, if you are pregnant, you will have priority car parking spaces marked in pink paint, closest to the ticket office. LOL.
K J — Google review
A great place, UNESCO world heritage that we can get a relaxing ocean view, volcanic island experience. If you arrived before 2.00 p.m. you can watch the traditional dive women ( Haenyo) performance.
Kalana C — Google review
Seongsan Ilchulbong, or Sunrise Peak, is one of Jeju’s most iconic natural landmarks, famous for its dramatic volcanic tuff cone and the stunning panoramic views from the summit. The climb is relatively short but can be steep in sections, with well-maintained stone steps and handrails making it manageable for most visitors, though it can get crowded, especially at sunrise or peak tourist season. From the top, you can see the crater, rolling green slopes, the surrounding coastline, and the sparkling blue ocean, offering excellent photo opportunities and a sense of Jeju’s unique volcanic landscape. The base area has parking, restrooms, small cafes, and souvenir shops, and there are coastal walking paths and viewpoints around the area, making it easy to explore without needing to climb if you prefer. The sunrise experience is particularly spectacular, giving the peak its name, but even daytime visits provide breathtaking scenery. That said, beyond the climb and the views, there isn’t a lot else to do, and the site can feel very touristy at times, with lots of people taking photos and walking around. Overall, Seongsan Ilchulbong is a must-see for first-time visitors to Jeju, offering a short but highly rewarding hike, iconic landscapes, and an unforgettable perspective of the island’s natural beauty, though it’s best to visit early or off-peak to fully enjoy it.
Keane W — Google review
Tickets cost 5,000 ₩ per adult to reach the summit, which is about 400 steps up. The climb is worth it—the view is stunning, and you can even spot Hallasan in the distance! I wouldn’t have guessed Seongsan Ilchulbong is a volcanic crater if I hadn’t read about it, since its slopes are now covered in lush green vegetation, giving it a grassy appearance. On the way down, the Haenyeo divers weren’t working due to rough waters, but I still managed to run into one!

Mountains
Hallasan, also known as Mt. Halla, is a shield volcano and the highest peak in South Korea. Hiking to its 1,950-meter summit offers breathtaking views of Baekrokdam, a lake-filled crater, and the surrounding volcanic cones within Hallasan National Park. The hiking trails are relatively easy, with courses less than 10 km in length.
Highest mountain in South Korea. Was full of snow and ice in most parts of the hike, even when visiting in March. Would encourage to look at the weather and be prepared with equipment as crampons are required in these situations. Good hike with nice views at the top, but a lot of tourists and locals there too waiting in line to take a picture with the sign.
Kat T — Google review
My wife and I have very good memories on this mountain. We saw many cute animals, including deer and birds. They all live freely here. Climbing the mountain is very hard, but the scenery after climbing the mountain is very beautiful and worth it. Many foreigners come here to climb the mountain. This is a must-visit place when traveling to Korea. Highly recommended.
HC X — Google review
One of the most popular national parks in all South Korea, and also the country's highest peak! There are two paths to get to the summit (Seongpanak and Gwaneumsa), and you need to make a reservation to be able to go up the mountain through any them. The path is all well marked, I would say it is not possible to get lost. It's a hard way up, and you will probably get wet but the experience it's worth the effort.
Javier M — Google review
Did not managed to hike up the mountain but it's nice having to see snow fall from the previous night. Definitely a place to visit come winter...
C L — Google review
Decent hike, but not the most scenic (spoiled by the Rocky Mountains). Did the hike up via the Seongpanak Trail since the other trail is closed for construction. This does mean that the number of permits available goes pretty quick. You can reserve (free) a month in advance. We had forgot to reserve, but managed to snag a reservation at 3am the morning of due to a cancellation. There's also time limits in place to ensure that people finish the hike before sunset so this means that if you don't get past the top shelter by 11:30am, you won't be permitted to go to the peak. You'll also need some ID with your reservation QR code for entrance at the start. Paid parking (1000 won) is very limited (70 some cars) and was filled when we got there at 06:15. Ended up parking at the Jeju-do Livestock Life Research Institute Jeju Horse Pastureland parking lot and taking the bus back (bus was packed full and some people had to wait for the next bus).

We were a group of 4 friends from Nepal, currently working in Korea. During our holidays, we decided to explore Jeju Island, and climbing Hallasan was one of the best parts of our trip. The hike was a bit challenging, especially near the summit, but totally worth it. The views from the top were amazing — you can see clouds all around and feel like you’re really above everything. It was peaceful and beautiful. If you’re in Jeju and like nature or hiking, I definitely recommend trying the Hallasan summit. Just make sure to start early and carry enough water and snacks. Great experience overall!
Sagar's V — Google review
The trail is easy, the scenery is nice, the only disadvantage is that you can't watch the sunset or sunrise because the curfew is strict. And you need to reserve the ticket to enter and they have limited number per day, so please do remember that. I've been hiking a lot, even more crowded mountains but this mountain is a special case.
Nguyễn V — Google review
A must when you made it to Jeju already and the vibe is there but tbh it is not as spectacular as Alps or other mountains over 2k m. No surprise, it is just one peak. Went there with my son and you can do it way faster than most of the guids say. But be careful, despite marking on the maps there is NO drinking WATER available on the entire trail from Gwaneumsa to Seongpanak.

Beaches
Hyeopjae Beach, located in the west of Jeju Island, is a picturesque spot with bright white sands and clear turquoise waters offering stunning views of Biyangdo Island. This tranquil stretch of beach is perfect for swimming and lounging, with amenities such as restaurants, cafes, changing rooms, showers, and parasols available. It is known for its long coastline and black volcanic sand.
We visited Hyeopjae Beach to watch the sunset, but got there early enough to enjoy walking along the rocks, beach and dip our feet in the beautiful emerald clear waters. Parking was super easy and plentiful right by the beach area. There were convenient restrooms, changing rooms and a place to wash off your feet right as you return to the parking area. There are many restaurants, convenience stores, and of course equipment rentals right at the beach. Lots of families enjoying time together, and exploring the shallow water areas between the lava ricks. Beautiful views and sunset!
Jill B — Google review
Lovely beach! Not rocky, quite shallow, beautiful water. It's also quite wheelchair accessible. From the (paid) car park on the left side of the beach, you can access an accessible toilet and a walkway along the beach (though quite sandy). On the right side of the beach there's even a ramp/slipway which goes into the water when it's at high tide - though beware of water surges with waves.
Victoria — Google review
We visited Hyeopjae Beach for a few hours in October. We had picked up a rental car near Jeju Airport and were on our way to Seogwipo. The black lava rock reminded me of the Big Island of Hawaii. It was also windy. Probably better in the Summer, but still worth a visit.
K J — Google review
Loved this place to bits. Wonderful wonderful beach and sea side area to unwind and just relax. Not really crowded as it is about winter time and wind is strong and cold. Good mixed of eateries and cafes along the seaside road.
Chonpo — Google review
Nice beach but quite busy. However it’s clean and you can rent a sun bed or table, flap tie and more. They have lockers too. The water is shallow and easy to play in. We had fun.
Blanka K — Google review
Beautiful beach! White sand with clear blue waters. Quite windy I must say(we visited in November so this may change by season). There's a wide beach for hanging out, as well as some rocks to walk around and explore the ocean.
Andi G — Google review
Beautiful beach with white powdery like soft sand. Very clean, clear sea with blue, green colours further out. There's a lagoon near the lava rock area where you can catch small prawns, fishes, snails, etc. The prawns will bite you if you were to stand there without moving. Many people at the beach. The tide is low when we went there so you can walk very far to the ocean as it's very gradual incline. There's shower area nearby and lots of shops selling drinks, souvenirs, and there's cafes too. Lots of parking space.
Noorzidah N — Google review
Beautiful beach. Can't swim there though as there is a clear warning sign due to jellyfish. You can see lava rocks and we were able to catch crabs under those lava rocks.

The Teddy Bear Museum, located in Jeju, offers a delightful experience for visitors of all ages. The museum showcases a diverse collection of teddy bears dressed in various costumes and lifelike poses, including designer teddy bears that are more than just toys. You can also admire antique teddy bears and even the world's smallest teddy bear. This family-friendly attraction is an ideal alternative to Loveland and is perfect for travelers with kids.
I visited with my wife. This is one of only two Teddy Bear Museums in the world. Inside, you can explore the history of teddy bears as well as various themed displays decorated with teddy bears, almost like Lego exhibits. And if you wish, you can even make your own teddy bear. It was a charming place, and we had a delightful time enjoying the cute and creative themes.

Came on a weekday morning, free 2 hours parking. Tickets at 12,000won for adult. Can buy tickets from kiosk at entrance. Place was quite small, takes about 1 hour to finish whole place. Suitable for kids below 10yo. Plenty of bear exhibitions and bear on display and a build a bear counter at the gift store. Most interesting part would prolly be the art part. Good activity to hide from the sun.
Lulu J — Google review
Much more interesting and impressive than I expected! The history stories and the remakes of classic works of art were very well-made! Saw the most expensive teddy and the 9 meter high bear! I also like that it only took me an hour to get through.

Great place that is rich with the history of teddy bears, relevant facts living up to its name (TB musuem). Inside it was a store where one can personalize a bear, and also a cafe fo refreshments. Tickets are available at the entrance and they also have parking space.

They’ve recreated famous historical events and paintings with teddy bears. Merch shop sells a variety of cute teddy bears. It’s a small museum but worth a visit if you are in the area.
Em — Google review
The museum is not that big, still, it is divided to several exhibitions. There are historical, art and big gallery shop with varieties of bears 🐻. Good to come with kids. Ticket costs 12k for an adult. Which is a bit pricy for this little museum.
Medina A — Google review
It a teddy bear place with lots and lots of teddy bear. You can DIY your teddy bear with 30000 or 50000 Won. There are a lot of shops opposite the museum too like Starbucks, Olive Young. Good to enjoy half a day there.

A good place to spend the morning, not too crowded. They have rich history of the bear displays and even “The most expensive bear” that’s auctioned. Bought a cute bear at the gift shop. Morning well spent!

Seongeup Folk Village, nestled at the base of Hallasan mountain on Jeju Island in South Korea, offers a glimpse into traditional Korean life. The village showcases simple homes constructed from thatch and lava rock, along with iconic stone statues. Visitors can explore residential houses, Confucian shrines and schools, as well as stone monuments and large millstones. This authentic landscape reflects the cultural heritage passed down through generations.
Authentic village with many old structures that have been preserved from its founding. Great for sightseeing and stolling the many quaint and beautiful buildings, courtyards, streets and picturesque spots that are plentiful. We are planning to spend a night in one of the many homestays next time we are in Jeju.
Rick K — Google review
Interesting folk village about an hour drive from cruise terminal. There is plenty of parking for small vehicles and tour buses. Just before the entrance is a series of souvenir and coffee shops. Very cheap coffee and smoothies. Worth a trip and perhaps second wind from the drive. The entrance to the village is a large wooden gate which is one of a couple entry points surrounded by a large tall stone wall. Within the grounds are several shops, a sprinkle of authentic foods and craft such as weaved dyed scarves, dresses and shirts. There is a modern influence though such as the self checkout hut with food and souvenirs and is exactly how it sounds. About towards the center of the village is a tall tree almost original to the 600 year old village. There we were fortunate enough to see a traditional march from the locals dressed in replica clothing. On that note, there are a couple shops that allow day rental of authentic garb and they did take a credit card. On the way out, be sure to take a minute to enjoy the large Canola flower fields, a very perfect picture moment. Overall, the folk village achieves an authentic step back in time to appreciate the village life and hardships.
Kristopher M — Google review
See Korean folk houses. There are also very pretty flowers if you come at the right season (we came in Nov)
Following M — Google review
Seongeup Folk Village in Jeju was honestly not as special as I expected, and felt more like a quick stop than a meaningful cultural experience. The traditional stone houses and thatched roofs are interesting to look at for a few minutes, but many areas feel more like staged photo spots than a living village, and a lot of it is shops selling tea, honey, souvenirs, and horse-bone products rather than real cultural demonstrations. Some guides try to gather visitors into small groups for explanations or to sell local goods, which can feel a bit forced. There are a few informational signs about old Jeju life and the history of the village, but overall the experience is pretty minimal unless you’re deeply interested in architecture or folk culture. The pathways are easy to walk, and the scenery around the village is pleasant, but the whole place can be seen in 20–30 minutes. It’s free to enter and there’s parking nearby, which is convenient, but compared to other cultural sites on Jeju, this one feels more commercial and less immersive. Not terrible by any means, but definitely not a must-see—worth visiting only if you’re already passing through or want a short, low-effort stop.
Keane W — Google review
There are still have resident there, so everyone should keep the volume down. A good village to take the stroll but not so informative.

Great place to see if you are into korean historical dramas. The place is well maintained and enjoyable to walk around

Ollae Guksu is a popular dining spot for both locals and tourists, offering delicious noodle dishes topped with flavorful pork. The generous portions and delectable taste keep customers coming back for more. While the menu is limited, the food arrives promptly, making it a great option for a quick mid-day snack. The restaurant is bustling in the morning, attracting a diverse crowd including Koreans and earning high praise as a three Michelin star establishment.
Our last breakfast in Jeju before heading back to Busan. This popular restaurant has only 1 item on their menu - pork noodle (Guksu). Doesn’t look like much but taste is so clean and rich. Great for a cold morning. Highly recommended! 🍜

The pork noodle soup is really delicious. The soup is clear and flavourful. Pork meat is plentiful. Counted at least 10 slices, some buried under the noodles. (Jeju airport restaurant sells the same with only 2 slices of meat) Definitely recommend fellow travellers to try it if you haven’t! Must try!

This restaurant only has one item on the menu. It’s pork noodle soup! They are very generous with their portions, and with the amount of sliced pork (there were more underneath the noodles). So so so delicious and umami, highly recommend. This was our last meal in Jeju and it left us wanting more. One bowl is 10,000 won, it can’t get better than that!

If you're visiting Jeju Island, make sure to stop by the renowned Myeongjin Jeonbok Abalone Restaurant, known for its delectable abalone dishes. The restaurant offers a limited menu featuring four main dishes: abalone sizzling stone pot rice, grilled abalone, rice porridge with abalone, and sliced raw abalone. This establishment is popular among locals and tourists alike, often drawing long queues due to its exceptional culinary offerings.
Spacious and clean restaurant overlooking the beautiful ocean. Not many people yet when we were there as we came early to beat the crowd. Their abalone porridge was superb. The grilled abalone was tasty and fantastic. Even their side dishes were nicely done and we could top-up if we have finished the plate. Nice area with garden, swing and carpark space.
Noorzidah N — Google review
We arrived around 1:15 PM and had a short wait of about 10 minutes for our table. Upon entering, you place your order and name with the staff, who will let you know when to come back — ours was 10 minutes later. The menu is simple, and we tried the abalone rice claypot, butter abalone, and abalone sashimi. The banchan includes mackerel, which is fairly generous and tasty, though slightly on the salty side. The abalone rice claypot is absolutely delicious! There are instructions on how to enjoy it, and following them really elevates the experience — from the first bite to the last, it’s amazing. Surprisingly, about 40% of the diners were Singaporeans, which made it feel a little like home!
Tan. W — Google review
Went twice within a month, and the freshness of the abalone differed a lot. A local restaurant that gained online traction and has become a bit too popular. Overall not bad, but slightly overhyped in my opinion.

***HOW TO QUEUE*** Go to the counter and put your name down with the lady. Need to state what you want to order also, so when they sit you they can start serving you the food. You can always add more items when you’re seated. The abalone rice in the hot stone pot is quite good and the grilled abalone is very nicely done too. Worth a visit if you’re in the area. They have a few branches around the island.

Believe the hype, folks!! Fresh abalones as big as one’s palms, with a view of the sea. Free mackerel for the table, yummy banchan. Yummy abalone!!! (A steal at 6 for KRW 15k) Unforgettable!! A dream!!! Walk in with no reservations in the summer, no wait.

Abalone porridge was good. The grilled abalone really hit me. Soft and fresh. The raw ones are crunchy but did not taste as good as the grilled ones. The grilled mackerel was served as sides and it tasted really good. Fresh!

Hangover soup restaurant
Ujin Haejangguk is a family-friendly restaurant located in Jeju, offering a welcoming ambiance and a helpful staff that assists with menu translations. The waiting time is minimal compared to other restaurants on the island. The restaurant operates on a queue system, providing guests with a number and inviting them to wait in the nearby area.
Expect to wait to get a seat. The line can often take two hours. I recommend estimating they seat 60 teams an hour so if your ticket is 120 teams in front of you then you can comfortably expect to come back within two hours and be there in time for when your number is called. Visually the food doesn’t look great but it did definitely taste good and I recommend trying it.

Our first meal after landing in Jeju was at Ujin Haejangguk, a spot known for its hangover soups. We had gosari haejangguk (bracken soup) and momguk (gulfweed soup). Both were super comforting but I preferred the momguk as the gosari got a bit jelak after a while. We also had a crispy mung bean pancake that was incredibly yummy and satisfying. Overall 7.5/10

Ujin Haejangguk is an absolute must-try restaurant! I was incredibly fortunate to avoid the long wait times that are typically associated with this place (1.5-2 hours!). The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the spicy beef congee, which was an absolute delight, especially on a rainy day. The flavors were on point, and the tender beef slices added a fantastic touch. The staff was friendly and provided excellent service, while the cozy ambiance enhanced the overall experience. If you're looking for an unforgettable culinary adventure, Ujin Haejangguk should be at the top of your list!

The ambiance may resemble a typical Korean pork grill place, but the experience is anything but ordinary.
Black pork is a must try! The meat cooked by the staff is like wagyu quality pork that melts in your mouth. But it’s very Smokey and smelly. Prepared to smell after eating.

The place looks like a typical Korean pork grill place but don't let the look deceive you. Considering the quality of black pork and their service, this place is definitely one of the most outstanding black pork grill restaurant you can meet in Jeju.

Very good quality pork. Comes in 2 standard cuts. 400g collar and 200g belly. Grilled at the table by staff. Very good and friendly service. Looked extremely popular with locals and tourists, and frequented by celebrities too. Highly recommended.

Wow! The best pork BBQ place in Jeju. The meat was tender and juicy. The menu is combination of pork belly and pork butt. The pork butt was the hit! Very delicious! I wish they offer the menu of pork butt only. I still miss the taste of the meat! Only thing that I did not like about was the mosquitoes. The windows were wide open cuz I went to this place in October and the weather was still pretty warm. We got there right after they were open, and didn't have to wait on line. I would definitively come back to this place and recommend this place to my family.

For me, this restuarant offered nice food. We had black pork(the popular dish in Jeju). And it was delicious! They served small portion of Kimchi but you can ask for more. The staff will be on service for roasting, so you just have to sit down and watch until it's ready to eat. Remember the Anchovy sauce is something you should not missed!

Superb Jeju black pork & they BBQ the pork for you. Remember to get the big transparent bag to keep your outer coats to prevent them from smelling

Found this gem on Strictly Dumping’s YouTube channel and I am glad that we went. No English menu, but there is only one reason to go! Black pork! The pork fat is unreal. It has the perfect texture and crispiness. The servers also help you cook the pork, which is very helpful.

Dongmun Traditional Market, established in 1945, is a bustling indoor market on Jeju Island. It's renowned for offering the freshest seafood caught from the surrounding sea. Visitors can savor freshly prepared raw fish and local delicacies like omegi tteok and gogi guksu. The market also boasts a wide array of souvenirs, making it a popular shopping destination for both tourists and locals.
It was our last night in South Korea. The Dongmun Market is not much different from the half dozen other markets we visited during our trip (except they sell a lot of oranges in Jeju Island!). It was a nice way to spend our last evening amongst the people, colours, sounds and tastes of a popular Korean market. We ended up dining on cheap but tasty flame-broiled black pork rolls, black pork skewers and steamed dumplings from the food stalls.

Dongmun Traditional Market was not quite what I expected, it felt more like a typical tourist market than a local one. That said, the energy is lively, and the street food scene is worth checking out. One highlight I recommend is the freshly squeezed tangerine juice, sweet, refreshing, and a nice way to enjoy one of Jeju’s specialties. If you’re nearby, it’s worth a quick visit, but don’t expect a hidden gem, it’s popular for a reason.

I love going to local markets and won’t miss a chance to explore one. There are a huge variety of seafood vendors and plenty of those selling tangerines and snacks. It is a must to get a bottle of tangerine juice. And the tangerine mochi were really great, I love them and they were not too sweet as well. The natural sweetness of tangerine goes really well with the red beans and the mochi has such a light texture. Most of the shops are selling the same things with the same promotion mechanics. Just get from someone that you like. Great place to get some snacks as souvenirs. I like the dark chocolate tangerines and also the gummy sweets.

Dongmun Traditional Market is a must-visit place for all visitors to Jeju. It was established in 1945 and moved to the present site in 1954. It offers a variety of goods including fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs, local cookies, souvenirs, clothing, fish, shellfish and various types seafood, etc. There are many food stalls selling all kinds of Korean foods and snacks. Many people queue up at the popular stalls buy the food including the black pork rolls and raw fish slices. It gets crowded in the evening.

We came in at night, most of the wetmarket are close, but still plenty of food stalls and gifts shops open, basically a night market. Recommend to come in both day and night time, should be quite different. You can get a glimpse of how the locals live their lives. The foods are great!!

Sashimi was fresh from the market. However, the street food are okay. Regretted not getting a few more platters. Went for the flounder fish sashimi. Great taste 😉

A vibrant place. Delecious food, lot of options and amazing energy. The energy and variety of the food choice differs in different markets around Korea and this was definitely my best market experience.

Lively market with everything! Food, snacks, ribbonfish, sashimi, fresh produce, souvenir, clothes, homewares, local specialties! We came here on our first day and last day :) Stall owners are friendly and cheery, clean toilets too!
