The John Denver Sanctuary in Aspen is a serene retreat dedicated to the beloved singer-songwriter. Nestled near the Aspen Art Museum in Rio Grande Park, this memorial features engraved rocks with Denver's name and lyrics. Visitors can enjoy the lush flower garden and tranquil atmosphere, making it a must-visit even for non-fans. The sanctuary offers a peaceful escape for contemplation and exploration, with a children's area adding an extra touch of fun for families.
Beautiful walk through a stream with stepping stones, beautiful flowers, etched rocks, and peaceful surroundings. Special moments with lyrics and poetry, remembering the great John Denver.

A Beautiful Tribute to a Musical Legend What an absolutely magical experience! The John Denver Sanctuary in Aspen is a hidden gem that captures the heart and soul of one of Colorado’s most beloved artists. Walking through this peaceful sanctuary feels like stepping into John’s world - each engraved stone tells a piece of his story through his own words, lyrics, and reflections. The setting is breathtaking, perfectly positioned along the Roaring Fork River with the stunning Aspen landscape as a backdrop. It’s exactly the kind of place John would have loved - serene, natural, and inspiring. Reading his memories carved into the stones while surrounded by the mountains and nature he sang about so beautifully gave me chills. The sanctuary is thoughtfully designed, allowing visitors to meander at their own pace and really absorb the words and music that meant so much to him. Whether you’re a longtime fan or just discovering his legacy, this place offers a deeply moving experience. I found myself humming “Rocky Mountain High” as I walked the peaceful paths. This is more than just a memorial - it’s a celebration of an artist who truly understood the beauty of Colorado and shared that love with the world. A must-visit for anyone in Aspen who appreciates music, nature, or simply wants a moment of reflection in a truly special place. Highly recommend taking your time here and bringing a camera - the combination of meaningful words and natural beauty makes for an unforgettable visit.

Beautiful place. We had trouble finding the actual walk. There was a homeless guy sleeping in some trees by the river tho. But we had a short wander, cruised an old bridge, saw some art, said we would come back next visit.
Kelly H — Google review
I loved this place. Went there several times during my stay in Aspen. It is so well manicured and beautiful in the morning and sunset. I took a million pictures and became John Denver fan!
Danielly P — Google review
Very nice way to honor John Denver. The sanctuary is well thought out and a tribute to his love of nature. The rock garden can be emotional with the lyrics of some of his most popular songs on them. Parking can be a challenge. There were games going on in the adjacent park, so had to park down the street.
Dennis G — Google review
The John Denver Sanctuary is pure magic. Peaceful paths, inspiring words carved into stone, and an atmosphere that feels like shooting hoops up in the sky ⛹🏼 Everything here is serene, uplifting, and unforgettable.
Andrew S — Google review
Even in light rain this place is beautiful and Free. Footing can be a little tricky when wandering. Not really wheelchair friendly.
Alice T — Google review
As a John Denver fan, I figured I would love this place, but it exceeded expectations. The flowing water and manicured grounds provided by this little sanctuary are incredibly well conceived. The fall colors during peak week made the garden pop. Highly recommended during the first week of October for anyone looking to breathe in some peace and serenity, not just those who appreciate Denver's songwriting. Insightful quotes and beautiful scenery are a perfect way to reflect, regardless of your taste in music.

Art museum
Museums
The Aspen Art Museum is a contemporary art venue that hosts international shows and features works by local artists. One of its recent exhibitions was an 18-month display by artist and poet Precious Okoyomon, which included an elysian garden on the rooftop. The outdoor installation featured various elements such as a soundscape, animate sculpture with organic materials, and edible and invasive plants.
During a ski trip to Aspen, I enjoyed my visit to the museum. I'm not sure why this museum has received so many low reviews, as I found the current exhibitions to be both interesting and informative. The café on the top floor also offered a decent variety of food and drink options.
Ray M — Google review
Nice and clean. Free admission. The exhibits are very small and the second floor is closed. The cafe and terrace are nice in the summer. It seems like the cafe is the destination, not the museum. Overall with such a limited exhibit, it was not impressive. I’ll try again another time when the second floor is open.
M B — Google review
I rarely leave negative reviews, but my experience at the Aspen Art Museum was surprisingly unpleasant. The front desk staff came across as openly unhappy to be there — curt, unwelcoming, and giving off the strong impression they’d rather be anywhere else. It set a sour tone before I even stepped into the exhibits. For a place meant to inspire creativity and curiosity, the lack of basic hospitality was disappointing.
Nick O — Google review
Cafe on the top is fantastic. 2 floors of the museum devoted to an artist who just reprints other people's work... not so thrilling. Really enjoyed the basement sensory exhibits though.
Ben J — Google review
The best and most interesting is the building itself, glass, concrete and wooden architecture, don't miss the terrace for a good look at the town and mountains or if you want to have some basic food and drinks. The art itself is a random collection of weird stuff, good for visiting before going to the airport if you have some extra time. Street parking.
J. B — Google review
The building itself is an impressive piece of architecture featuring an earthy woven exterior with a interior/exterior staircase that that reaches the rooftop. Entry and coat check are free and there’s a nice cafe on the roof with a great view of the slopes.
Kevin F — Google review
The Art Meuseum is a must visit spot in Aspen. It is free to visit and has some very interesting architecture. The view from the rooftop is nice and you can also grab a bite to eat in the Cafe. The exhibit was Andy Warhol originals which was cool to see those in person. I only deducted a star because I am not a major fan of this type of art and this was the only exhibit at a time. But if you are in the area then this is worth a visit. ( I do not own any rights to the artwork but we did ask permission to photograph, these works can easily be found online, enjoy!)
Matthew M — Google review
Interesting to wander. Variety of exhibits including a plant/garden exhibit on the top floor. The exterior copper lattice facade was beautiful. Free admission. The receptionist was very welcoming though coming in with 4 kids from age 9 to 13 we had the security guy follow us around.

As part of the Colorado Historic Opera Houses Circuit, it stands as an iconic building in the community and offers guided tours for visitors to appreciate its grand architecture.
The Wheeler Opera House under the executive direction of Mike Harrington is bringing exceptional programs to our beautiful theatre. A must attend experience while in Aspen.

Congratulations to the leadership and every volunteer, speaker, etc., at the first-ever Aspen Literary Festival. The experience was broadening, enlightening, and encouraging to this new writer. I was struck especially by the emotional honesty of each speaker, who described the writing process, as well as their challenges and victories. I hope this continues every year and look forward to returning, ready to attend talks at the Library or Wheeler Opera House. The fact that it was scheduled for this stunning weekend of Fall color in Aspen was one of the many reasons it was a smashing success. A huge thanks and also to the independent book store that was such a part of the festivities.
Madelon M — Google review
Such a great venue for unique and inspiring performances & films! I had a wonderful time at the Julia Keefe Indigenous Jazz Ensemble and also at MountainFilm. I love how the Wheeler is highlighting indigenous and latino voices, musicians, artists, creatives, and outdoors people! Both events were entertaining and educational.

The Silver Queen Gondola in Aspen offers a breathtaking 14-minute ride to the 11,000-foot summit of Ajax Mountain. From there, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of snow-covered peaks, the lively town below, and lush forests. In the summer, guests can partake in activities such as live music concerts, yoga classes, and golf at one of the highest courses in the world. Additionally, there are numerous mountain biking and hiking trails to explore.
Beautiful ride to the top with stunning views at the summit! The gondola line was longer than expected though. Once you’re up there, enjoy the views and grab a drink at the Sundeck!
Vidhya B — Google review
Beautiful ride with great views and mountaintop activities. The gondola ride up to the mountaintop is very scenic, with beautiful views. It's accessible and pet-friendly, which makes it a great option for families and visitors of all kinds. Once at the top, there are activities for the whole family and a food court area. Food service ends at 3 PM, but after that you can still buy drinks and snacks. Outside, there’s a spacious deck with tables and lounge chairs where you can relax and enjoy the views. You need to purchase a ticket to go up. There were no clear signs for parking, we parked on the street and paid by the hour.
Isadany A — Google review
Totally enjoyed the views coming up and going down. Wonderful free nature trail hike guided by ACES naturalists. If you’re visiting for 3 or more days, get the gondola pass. Well worth it.

Visited Silver Queen Gondola in Aspen Colorado after 27 years and found the place even more beautiful! We went in August. Parking was a little difficult to find but the trip on the gondola was nice and they had a really good restaurant with views at the top. We spent a about $25 a piece on lunch there.
Joe W — Google review
My wife and I were able to go to Aspen for a few days relaxing until Christmas eve. I can't ski, just had my hip replaced after Christmas but we went up the gondola to have a nice lunch and just the atmosphere at the top, the energy of skiers and boarders everywhere, love it! It was just what I needed pre surgery! Great food and better scenery!

Restaurant
Meat & Cheese Restaurant and Farm Shop is a trendy spot that offers artisanal breads, meats, and cheeses alongside a selection of wine, cocktails, and beer. The restaurant has shifted to offering only to-go food during the winter season, prompting executive chef Bryan Garneau to revamp the menu for easy transport.
Meat & Cheese is the perfect little lunch spot in downtown Aspen if you’re looking for a quality bite to eat with great service. I had the street tacos and I enjoyed the fact it was Wagyu beef which isn’t typical for this type of dish. A friend had the quesabirria tacos which they enjoyed. My absolute favorite part of the meal was the salted chocolate chip cookie board which came with two cookies and vanilla milk. The cookies were SENSATIONAL!!! Perfectly baked, warm and gooey in the middle while still maintaining the ideal level of crunch throughout. They were so delicious I went back later that night after dinner at Matsuhisa to get another batch for me and my driver. Ambiance inside was nice and cozy. As a first time visitor, I enjoyed the fact they had a great selection of cheese, meats, wine, and gifts for purchase to round out the experience. Overall 9/10.
Jamaal W — Google review
Went to celebrate my mom’s birthday and wow, I still dream about this place. If I had to pick a last meal, this would be it. I got the steak board and ate every last bite. My mom got the rotisserie chicken board. We sat outside and the views from downtown Aspen were absolutely breathtaking. The service was warm and pleasant, which made the whole experience even better. If you love steak, potatoes, and a good heartwarming meal, this spot is a must-try.
Heba — Google review
overall not bad! the meat and cheese board i’d say was a bit overpriced for what we got. it was mostly crackers. loved the mustard! we ordered the steak board and the vietnamese salad. the steak board was pretty good, the steak was a little underdone though. the salad was heavily lacking flavor, the sauce was almost the consistency of water and was not flavorful. there was also fried onions on it which didn’t really make sense to me.
Lylah M — Google review
Despite the restaurant’s name they have more than just meat and cheese here. Enjoyed their Vietnamese chicken salad and it was the best single lunch dish I’ve had in Aspen. Great combination of chicken, egg, cucumber, carrot, lettuce, noodles, and fried onions. Try to snag a table outside on their patio — atmosphere outdoors is five stars vs. indoors a little bit more cramped and only four stars. Service at the bar was very good.
M S — Google review
The 3% charge to offset the “high cost of living in paradise” feels inappropriate. Guests come to Aspen expecting premium prices, but not additional fees justified by the staff’s local living expenses. If costs are high, they should be reflected transparently in menu pricing, not added as an emotional surcharge. Food is good. Service average:
Andrey F — Google review
I had a really nice experience dining here! The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and everything I ordered tasted really good. The flavors were on point, and you can tell the food is made with care. The only thing I’d mention is that the steak was a bit on the chewy side, but still flavorful. Overall, it was an enjoyable meal.
Jill R — Google review
Our server recommended the Pastrami and the Quesabirria tacos and they were flavorful and unique. The pastrami was spicy, tangy, and had great texture. The tacos had wonderful consomé and had a tender meat. Highly recommend this place!
Vance S — Google review

Oyster bar restaurant
Bar
Restaurant
Clark's Oyster Bar in Aspen is a seafood haven that offers a raw bar, draft beers, and a daily cocktail special. Executive chef Josh Hines takes pride in providing locals and visitors with high-quality, simply prepared seafood dishes, including the crispy snapper with grits that reflects his Southern roots. Despite being located far from the coast, Clark's manages to capture the essence of the ocean through its crudo plates and lobster rolls.
What a treat, we were lucky to be in Aspen during mud season and the place was like a ghost town for the exception of Clark's Oyster Bar which was almost full at 2:00 PM! The reason became evident when we saw the eclectic range of food available. If you love oysters from around the United States this is you place, the selection of raw oysters was one of the best we have come across. If you want a sandwich or soup numerous choices abound. A bit pricy but hey its Aspen, if you can get in you will not be dissapointed, full bar as well, recommended!!!
Brian S — Google review
Absolutely loved this place! The oysters were incredibly fresh. Service was friendly and attentive. Definitely a must-visit in Aspen if you’re into quality seafood and a laid-back vibe.
Anastasiia L — Google review
We came here for a post hike late lunch and it was exactly what we needed. The oyster selection was broad with plenty of east and west coast options. The portions were healthy for the clam chowder and burgers we ordered. The clam chowder was a good texture. The atmosphere was bustling without it being too noisy or crowded.
Nabila K — Google review
We loved everything about our dinner here- the service was great, the ceviche, oysters, crab Mac and cheese, cocktails, and clam chowder were excellent, but WHAT EVEN ARE THESE FRIES? How are you supposed to eat them? Why would anyone want so many? Please someday consider changing the “fries” to actual fries.
Lorrie F — Google review
Everything was perfect. Some of the best food I’ve ever had. Very creative dishes…the spicy cauliflower was a surprise hit, and the lobster roll was spot on.
Flyan R — Google review
A very nice sea food restaurant. We ordered the beef tartar, which was incredibly tender and delicious. The octopus was well seasoned. The shrimp linguine was well cooked but it was a bit bland after tasting the octopus. Should probably have asked for a bit of more salt.
Niko Z — Google review
We’ve been to Clarks a few times and always enjoy it! Recommend: oysters, clam chowder, kale, scallops, Mac n cheese! We got the burger this time and I would pass on that, both the burger and fries were just okay. The staff and service is great!
Megan K — Google review
We stop here every time we’re in Aspen. They have one of the best happy hours in town with great martinis, burgers and oysters. The service is fantastic and the atmosphere can’t be beat. We love Clark’s!

American restaurant
Restaurant
White House Tavern is a charming eatery located in a 19th-century miner's cottage, offering an intimate dining experience. The menu features elevated sandwiches, burgers, salads, and craft cocktails. One of their highlights is the Parigi-style pizza, a focaccia-like creation with various seasonal flavors on a white base. The tavern also offers low rates and seasonal discounts for patrons to enjoy their hearty portions of food.
Excellent lunch here on almost all levels. Our two salads were creative and perfectly executed, as was my cocktail. Servers were super friendly, and the atmosphere was beautiful! Only downside was the slooooow service. My husband ordered a 2nd beer halfway through his meal, but it took so long to come out we had finished by the time it arrived. They did comp it (we only had time to drink 2 sips before we left), but beer should be super quick and they should put a rush on it when you're in the middle of your meal. Other than that, spot on, and we would for sure go back!
Tanya — Google review
Fantastic restaurant. Food tasted great. Worth the long wait for a table (over an hour for a party of 4), especially if you have other things to do around Aspen. The kids loved the food. Plenty of other families with kids dined around us. The menu had just the right level of sophistication that elevated it beyond the simplicity but still allowed it to be done well without alienating the kids. Service was attentive and allowed accommodation for food allergy. Sitting on the patio near the road has its disadvantages. Noise from the cars and motorcycles passing by often distracted from the atmosphere. But on a sunny afternoon I would still recommend sitting outside.
Ohad K — Google review
We came in for drinks and sat at the bar; Paige the bartender was great—friendly, attentive, caring. Ended up ordering a few snacks to try, which included the Brussel sprouts. They ended up being not too pleasing for us, so we put them to the side. Paige picked them up and questioned us as to why, and we responded, “they’re honestly disgusting, I’m sorry.” She didn’t say anything, just took them. Unprovoked, she kindly asked the manager on duty, a female long black hair, to comp them and the manager’s response was, “well I like them.” Another male server response was, “Brussels sprouts are one of the most over-rated vegetables.” The side dish ended up being comped. Having worked in the service industry, the take away is, this is not the behavior I would expect from a manager. Steamed Brussel sprouts belong in a hospital, not in ASPEN. There’s nothing southern about steamed Brussel Sprouts. PS: Paige, you’re a great bartender.
Andrew — Google review
Everything how it should be. For Europeans: after 10 days i managed to eat for the first time fresh salad and vegetables. Quality food, for a slightly higher price (Aspen...) and really nice waitresses who made our lunch 10/10. Can only recommend it!
J D — Google review
We had the pleasure of dining here for lunch with friends during a quick visit to Aspen last week. It’s always a great experience but it’s particularly refreshing to see a restaurant staff on their “A-Game” when mediocrity has become the norm so many places. Everything about our lunch was great, but especially the professional service.
Braun M — Google review
I was so disappointed by this place with the ratings it has. Located in downtown aspen, this place has wonderful views and atmosphere but it goes downhill from there. The waitress acted very bothered by our presence and seemed unhappy with her job. She seemed to be pressuring us to move faster and get out. I understand it’s a busy weekend in the middle of leaf peeping season but you can still be polite. When we stated we would just be getting apps and drinks she rolled her eyes and stated she would try to get us moved to the bar since we were seated in a “full dining section”. We were ordering drinks and appetizers! After we got our appetizer she immediately brought us the check like she couldn’t wait to get rid of us. Very upsetting and confusing treatment. Food was ok. But not necessarily worth the aspen premium.
Elena W — Google review
Great little restaurant in town with a pretty unique layout. We stopped in for lunch and sat at the ‘back bar.’ The service was excellent, as was the food. Definitely recommend that you stop in if you are in Aspen for a few days.
C T — Google review
French dip sandwich is good. I also like the chicken sandwich, but the chicken is super thin. Like 1/4 inch thick. Great flavors though which leaves me conflicted. Skip the fries, horrible, thin, flavorless. Salads and deviled eggs look good, but I have not tried them.

French restaurant
French Alpine Bistro - Crêperie du Village is a charming and stylish restaurant located in the heart of Aspen village. It offers a cozy patio for enjoying fondue and summer salads, along with an extensive wine list. The bistro is known for its authentic French onion soup, fondue, and European-style crepes, ranging from classic to elaborate options.
I do not have command of a sufficient number of superlatives to explain to you how wonderful this restaurant is! It was like finding an oasis of Paris on a street corner in Aspen. The food was fantastic, the drinks were perfect and the atmosphere was magical. This is our can’t miss option in Aspen.
Chad H — Google review
This restaurant is truly extraordinary. I consider myself an onion soup, connoisseur, and this onion soup was among the best I have ever had. The summer salad was a 8 1/2 out of 10 it was fresh, but had a little too much dressing. The dessert, a crème brûlée crêpe was also to die for I will eat here every time I come to Aspen. It’s truly a wonderful spot. The atmosphere is also very charming and the weight staff was amazing. I really can’t rate it any higher. It was over $100 without tip and no alcohol, but worth it IMHO.
Jonathan L — Google review
Let me start off the review with the food being quite good but definitely not worth the time. For example, when I ordered my meal of the gnocchi truffle (48$), the waiter then ask me if I wanted extra truffles on top. However I was unaware of the ludicrous amount they would rip me off with due to the prices not being mentioned on the menu. Those damn truffles cost more than my entire dish (50$). This place for me is a complete scam for anyone who values their money and dignity as the staff here feel like money-hungry vultures. Although I felt absolutely robbed, the presence and neoclassical design of restaurant was atmospheric and homely. But damn what a scam, this is to warn others not to come here. Greatly disappointed
Adam B — Google review
Unfortunately, my experience at this restaurant was very disappointing. From the very beginning, the service provided by the waiter Campell left much to be desired: inattentive, uninterested, and unprofessional. As for the food, I ordered the cheese fondue and it was a huge letdown. While the flavor was acceptable, the preparation was terrible—the bottom was so thick and rubbery it felt like chewing gum, while the top was oily and watery, almost like melted butter mixed with water. This is far from what one expects from a proper fondue. Overall, both the service and the quality fell far below expectations. I will definitely not be returning or recommending this place.

Absolutely fantastic experience at the French Alpine Bistro. The food, the service, and the atmosphere were all top notch. Cozy French place located in basement cave that feels like you’re traveled to mountain chalet in Alps. High end feel but not stuffy or pretentious. We loved our mains - all on point Alpine dishes like Wiener Schnitzel, etc. server was super friendly. Highly recommend. One of our favorite dinners in Aspen.

Incredible. No words. You've got to try it. The vibe is amazing. The service was great. Very intimate and cozy. Had the Foi Gra, escargot WOW! Crepe dessert & The dessert with the extremely long name is the cannoli. Everything was flavor explosion in your mouth! Dinner reservations are definitely needed. We passed on The fondue for the evening. Food is rich & prepared with skill & love! Cool little bar and open kitchen concept. And all of the decor and experience in itself!!!! Dress up here, don't go too casual. Will be back!!!!

Sushi restaurant
Matsuhisa is a renowned Japanese restaurant located in a charming 120-year-old Victorian house on Main Street Aspen. It offers an exquisite dining experience that combines traditional craftsmanship with modern flavors. The restaurant is famous for its sushi, sashimi, and innovative hot dishes prepared by the celebrated Japanese chef Nobu Matsuhisa. Diners can enjoy their meal in various settings, including an upstairs lounge, patio, and sushi bar.
The service made this place. Our waiter was smart, intuitive, caring, fun, and all these things while being on top of the details. Made me wish we had a waitress like this every evening out. The food was incredible. UNI all day, every day. Absolute must in Aspen. We loved everything about it.
Max A — Google review
I had an amazing dining experience at Matsuhisa. The Shrimp with Spicy Garlic Sauce was a nice appetizer, the Lamb Chops had a unique barbecue sauce and were cooked to my desired temperature (well done), and all of the sushi was great. My favorite item was the Black Cod, it was sensational. Service was top tier as expected. The ambience is typical of any fine dining establishment, but the interior design was underwhelming. An elevator and coat check are available for accessibility and convenience. Overall 9.5/10!

It was our first time trying this restaurant and it was good. We sat at the bar since we didn’t have a reservation. Our bartender was friendly and helpful. Food was good. I highly recommend making a reservation since it’s hard to get a table.

1st time dining here, asked our server, Marisa R, to please pick her favorites for our entire meal. The result, best sushi we have ever had in our lives (and my wife and I are both sushi connoisseurs)!! Here’s your road map to perfection: (1) Yellowtail Sashimi with Jalapeno (2) Tuna Tataki with Garlic and Tozas (3) Truffle Sashimi (4) Shiitake Salad (5) King Crab Amazu Pomzu (6) Sashimi: Toro - bluefin belly & Smoked Salmon (7) Sushi Rolls: Hanachi & Dragon (8) Shaved Ice 🍧 pic below Highly highly recommend that when you are in or around Aspen you drop in! Bon appétit my friends!

One of the best dining experiences we have ever had! We ordered the omakase along with shrimp and vegetable tempura — truly the best tempura we have had in our lives. We always love coming here, but this visit was exceptional. Even on a busy Friday night, the staff was so attentive and welcoming. They fit us in with our toddler, and everyone went out of their way to make him feel special — cutting up his food, checking on him, and making sure he felt included. Our waiter was incredible, and every dish was outstanding. We also ordered extra rolls and sashimi, all unbelievably fresh. An amazing experience from start to finish! We will be back!!

It seems almost superfluous to review Matsuhisa Aspen, which to my mind is the flagship restaurant of the town. Food, drink, and service are consistently excellent over the years—best of any of the Nobu / Matsuhisa locations I have experienced. Lead sommelier, Dave, recommends and pours Bottled Poetry with world-class style.

My husband and I had an amazing dining experience here a few nights ago. Our server Ally was simply AWESOME!! She had such a pleasant demeanor and made us feel so welcome....and she knew the menu extremely well and was able to accommodate my dietary preferences!! The food was delicious and overall we had the best dining experience here in Aspen. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND:)
