The architecture is amazing. Go at night and during the day to experience it and the surroundings in different ways. Head inside to find some solace from the hustle and bustle of the world outside.
Simply amazing church. Reminded me a bit of La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. Numerous photo ops around the plaza. Lots of people lots of fun!
Just a beautiful parroquia (cathedral) to see in San Miguel de Allende. You don’t have to be catholic to appreciate the beauty and design of this church. You’ll see it from all around town. It’s the center of town for a reason and admired and appreciated by all her residents. Highly recommend.
Simply breathtaking church, With such rich history. Day or night its a spectacle. So many shops, delicious eateries and music in the area. Loved every minute. Felt safe the entire time. Wear comfortable, rubber sole or traction shoes because the terrain (cobblestone) is rough outside of the plaza.
Beautiful church poised on the land of the Jardin Allende, serving as the focal point for San Miguel de Allende. Come and visit, sit in the park, visit one of the cafecitos or restaurants, and take some time out of your life.

I was blown away by how gorgeous this place is! You can stroll through different galleries, sometimes meet the artists and have a chat with them. The sunny courtyards are just as beautiful! Being able to have coffee and a light meal while sorting out impressions at the end of our visit was excellent.

Excellent place to visit local artists and view their artistic talents. They have a cafe and workshops. They also have artworks for purchase. It’s really nice place to view different artworks as they have multiple galleries.
This place is an act of generosity. Anyone can walk in for free (even with their dog) and simply enjoy the endless rooms of gorgeous art.
We did the Sunday Art Walk where many of the artists are there to show and talk about their work (First Sunday of the month). Great space and lots of art on display
This is a very special gallery and a must see to add to your San Miguel trip. $100mx about $5 to take a ta I there. I loved it and bought some very special pieces of art for my collection. Don’t miss it.
So much to see! Wonderful art and sculpture and jewelry. Diverse mix of styles and media. Some galleries offer workshops. Two restaurants and a wine tasting room. Great experience!
Fantatstic art and antiques galley. We walked there and back from the plaza in Centro. So many eye popping displays. I snapped these images before I realized they ask for no photos throughout. I feel like these images do not egregiously snub that request. I discovered many things. I discovered a few art classes and a new artist I will be following. Well worth a return!

Botanical garden

Natural preserve with a big cactus collection & other indigenous flora, including endangered plants.
Slide 1 of 8
Today, we explored the stunning Charco del Ingenio, a protected natural area and botanical garden located in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. While walking through 500 species of cactus and other native plants under the blazing desert sun wasn’t everyone’s favorite activity—especially for the kids—it definitely built some character! 🌵☀️ Did you know that cacti are some of the most resilient plants in the world? They’ve adapted to survive in some of the harshest environments, storing water in their thick, fleshy stems to endure long periods of drought. Charco del Ingenio is home to many rare and endangered species, making it an important conservation site. The area also has a fascinating history; it was once part of a larger volcanic region, which contributed to the unique mineral-rich soil that supports such diverse plant life. Plus, it’s a vital water source for the local community, with natural springs feeding into the area. Despite the heat and the challenge, it was a valuable experience for the kids—building character, awareness, and appreciation for nature’s resilience. Sometimes, the toughest journeys lead to the most rewarding discoveries! 🌱✨
I was pleasantly surprised! I was expecting a small park, but this place is big with many different trials to hike and places to see. I spent about 90 minutes here, but could easily have spent double that. The entrance fee is only 100 pesos, and they offer a discount for teachers and students with valid IDs. There is a huge dam, waterfalls, rivers, plants, observatories, and much more. They have a gift shop with handmade goodies to help support their conservation efforts. It is well-kept, and the variety of plants and small insects is fascinating. Come prepared with hiking shoes, water, sunscreen and a hat because you can spend half a day here. I took an Uber there and back, or you can drive because there is plenty of parking. They also have clean restrooms and a small cafe selling drinks. The views are amazing, and it's perfect for a quiet getaway in nature.
Really big botanical garden with great views into the canyon. It’s so peaceful here and you can see many different plants and bird species. The natural products in the shop are great too and the staff is super friendly!
We visited the Charco Reserve this morning, glad we got there at around 10 in the morning and while it was getting hot by the end of our hike, we were very glad that we wore sunscreen and hats and got there early. Many parts of the trail are covered with shade, but many parts are not. We spent about 1 to 2 hours hiking the trails, there are many options, we did find sometimes that there were a few too many options that were unmarked, never that we felt like we would get lost, but we’re not clear which path was which on the West end. They have done an absolutely beautiful job with the buildings and the displays and the preservation work that’s done for this important botanical region. Many little surprise buildings along the way, including the four winds and the memorial and surprising views not just of the water and the dam but also the unexpected canyon… Absolutely worth a visit. We took an Uber to get there And walked home… If you have bad knees, I would not recommend that as the downhill is pretty steep, but was definitely just a 20 to 25 minute walk back to Centro. I imagine that a nature guide if hired would have been very informative, but you certainly don’t need one to enjoy this place… and thrilled to be here just as the monarchs are starting to arrive…
Charco del Ingenio is a great visit. Wonderful paths to roam and explore the large natural gardens. Beautiful plants 🪴 and cactus 🌵 mixed together. Large presa and wetlands. We are lucky and live only 10 mins away and joined as Members on the spot. Highly recommend a visit for couples, families and singles. Nice store and snack bar (jugo verde was delicious). Staff is great and very friendly.
Beautiful peaceful relaxing place with many plants. We saw many spiders (the season for them) as well as lizards and a road runner. Interesting displays in English as well as Spanish which we appreciated.
Great location. Good hiking with lots of interesting stops along the way. The trails are all marked well and groomed. We ate a little snack at the Cafe. Food was all hand made and excellent. Juices were, too. Bring a couple of bottles of water. You can refill them at the Cafe for free after your hike. We went east to the hothouse and old Bridge. Then along the lake to the dam and the Sculpture Marker on the other side. We did not go to the Hacienda Ruins as I don't think that area has been completed. We came up for a snack and to use the restrooms. Then took the lower trail along the canyon to the western viewpoints. The ladies in the reception area are really nice. English and Spanish is spoken. My wife spent more at the gift shop then we did on the entry tickets. Highly recommend.
I’ve been going for many years now - still the best place to stroll around close to town. Go in the morning before for the heat comes up, fabulous views over the city. Great vistas at any season. I finally decided to join the botanical garden as I really like all the new construction they have done architecturally the new rooms are excellent the vaulted curved brick work is amazing.

Totally recommended to take their tour and get a little local insight on San Miguel all well supporting a local institution that provides a ton of opportunities to the community from books, music, instruments, computers, classes, and so much more! Go check it out and support somthing awesome!
One of the most beautiful public libraries I've ever seen. There are so many little nooks for reading or working, both indoors and outdoors. ❤️
Great bookshop with a gorgeous mural. The library is very adequate with a beautiful courtyard and a lovely restaurant. I enjoyed walking and exploring the local hangout.
Very interesting area , and painting on the wall , u can get books for English or read book there
Great library with both English and Spanish books. Pretty courtyard with chairs around to take a rest or to read a book. People working there are friendly. Also there is a cafeteria. The restroom is very clean and no charge. Interesting murals in the gift shop. Worth to stop by.
I took one of the public guided tours, which was thorough and professional, returned for two excellent evening musical performances hosted at the library, and ate at the cafe (fruit and yogurt plate) which is a hidden gem! The library has an extensive book collection in English and Spanish and provides a number of services to the local community. An outstanding community resource!
I attended a talk on History of Mexico at no cost. Super interesting. Great for the cultural traveller.
Beautiful, quiet patio and rooms to read a relax in. Also a great place to buy a used book in English for a very reasonable price.

Remote archaeological complex featuring various pyramid structures dating from the 7th century.
Slide 1 of 8
Can’t believe I didn’t leave a review from my tour 3 yrs ago! An incredible experience to learn about the brilliant peoples who built this pyramid, directed water to their gardens and apparently were experts of movement of sun, moon and stars. Amazing location in middle of a working ranch with stunning views. Visitors should know a lot of walking is required, no shade and the local guides at the Center speak Spanish. All bags are checked in and left at the arrival Center. Don’t miss the food and crafts vendors near the center. Would love to see the skies above it at night!
Not bad weather in Feb. Very interesting site. Need to be up to a bit of a walk. Watch out for red ants. Amazing that there are archaeological site in Gto!
Wonderful tour to this historical monument. You will need a guide to show you around.
Wonderful archeology site. No wheelchair access. No backpacks are allowed. Take water. 3/4 of a mile hike to site.
Amazing place. Not too busy during the week. Fair entrance fee, which included parking, toilets, tour guide and bus shuttle service. Shuttle doesn't go all the way to the site though. The last stretch is walked with the group. There are places to take a short rest and get shade. Walk takes about 20 minutes. Tour itself is another 30-45 minutes. they show you everything and explain the meanings and history. it is one of the last pyramids in Mexico where you are allowed to walk up, so it's a once in a lifetime experience. if it gets busier they will probably stop allowing it. at the entrance there is also a small stand for food and drinks. the lady there makes amazing quesadillas. all self made. all in all an amazing experience. Also very close to San Miguel (20 minute drive) so you can combine both.
A magical experience given by a brilliant archeologist who has worked on the site for over 20 years. An impressive amount of knowledge presented in a digestible manner with humor and precision. This tour was a one of a kind experience, due to its seclusion, there are driveways and gates for private accessibility only. We were able to climb & descend the steps to the main site, a truly spectacular opportunity. After tour we were given chance to enjoy homemade tacos and cold drinks that were vegan and gluten free friendly💚 We were then given access to the museum. That concluded the tour with more stories of their artifacts and findings of this truly mystical site. English speaking friendly tour. A large brim hat for shade and comfortable walking shoes are a must.
This was an amazing trip! I would recommend this to everyone, really a must-see. Albert Coffee is a great guide, but book in advance. After your tour, you will have an opportunity to buy some street tacos. These are a must at the end.
Interesting historical site in Guanajuato state, near San Miguel de Allende. The tour guide speaks in Spanish, which we were not yet fluent in, but the museum has some English translation. There is a 15 minute bus ride, and a 20 minute uphill walk to the site, about a mile and a half round trip on foot. Plan on spending about 2-3 hours there. It may be a good idea to call ahead to find out the bus schedule. On the weekday we went, there was a two hour wait between buses, if we had arrived 5 minutes later, we would have had a two hour wait. The path is made of stones and dirt. It would be challenging if you are not in shape or not used to the altitude. There was no apparent access for people with movement disabilities, but there is a museum to visit if you are unable to make the trip with the rest of your party. There is a snack stand and restroom at the visitor center, but no facilities once you get on the bus.

This is the best place to start your visit of the historic core! Plenty of people watching, food and shade when it’s warm.
A lively garden with live music and dancing in the evenings. There are lots of artisans and food stalls. It is a little small and can get a bit crowded but a perfect stop to look at the Parroquia as you walk up the hill
Beautiful! It's a place you have to go to when in San Miguel! Such a fun place to hang out, eat food and listen to the mariachi bands play!
I was there for an incredible wedding and whilst I was there, there was a festival going on all weekend. 1000 horses passed through the streets one day followed by a huge party in the streets till the early hours of the morning with food and drinks available everywhere. The following day was kilometres of people walking the streets, dancing and acting for hours, music, culture and food everywhere, it was incredible. Fireworks from 2AM through till around 4AM, fun all round. I was there at the beginning of October 2025.
One of the best places anywhere to sit and watch the world go by. Great spot for wedding watching on Saturdays.
The Spanish architecture, culture, history and the doors are absolutely amazing in this charming city! In the center of the Jardin, the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel church towers above you with cobblestone streets at your feet. It was very walkable and we covered a lot of ground within a week's stay capturing the unique essence in this area. There are hotels throughout the city as well as Airbnb's. The locals are very friendly and you're greeted by many passerby's! Buenos dias.
The Plaza Mayor of San Miguel de Allende, well maintained, clean and great to it full everyday with locals and visitors relaxing, watching folks take pics of the Church and the Allende house now a historic museum.

I found this place by accident. It is an amazing small museum of Mexican handicrafts. The exhibition of 2023 national toy competition is on right now. The award winning artworks really showcase Mexico’s strong culture heritage and artists’ exquisite craftsmanship. The museum also has a cute courtyard and a beautiful rooftop with the view of the city.
My husband and I truly enjoyed our visit to this museum. The place is filled with a variety of handmade toys from several types of materials - pure art. Plan to T Take the time to admire the creativity and high level of care this 3-story museum offers!
Great stop with mutliple levels of culture and toys. Intricate artwork in the fashion of toys. Our young children enjoyed the experience too.
Very cool museum of Mexican toys representing the different regions and times in Mexico's history. You can see how toys were made using basic materials such as straw, wood and even recycled materials. On the top floor, you can find an exhibition of all the winners of last year's toy making competition and a terrace with an awesome view.
This museum is wonderful. So many interesting, beautiful and quirky toys!
Very very cute museum and with a lot of stuff. Definitely a recommendation. 5/5 stars
Great spot to learn history via the arts and roll making across various Mexican regions and cultures

Don't sleep on this park. It's absolutely beautiful and has a tranquility not found in Centro. I bought an absolutely beautiful water color from a talented young artist there for a very reasonable cost. The beauty of this gorgeous park is something I won't forget any time soon.
This is a great park to stroll or relax. Clean and plenty of benches and trash cans. There is exercise equipment, players, and basketball courts as well as a small hummingbird garden and snack vendors.
This park is incredibly multidimensional! Excellent and regularly frequented basketball courts. Artists selling art during the day. Markets available Saturday and Sunday. We walked through one evening and there was a semi pro basketball game with referees and score keepers. The park is dog friendly so please take note of this fact. There’s also a Gazebo where they hold weddings and traditional events.
A beautiful and clean park. They have an unofficial dog park area and art and food vendors on the weekends. In my opinion, the lady there makes the best Gorditas in all of San Miguel de Allende. Bring a book or your dog, grab some agua de coco and sit under a shady tree.
Parque Benito Juárez — a green oasis in the heart of San Miguel de Allende. With shady walking paths, decorative fountains, playgrounds, and quiet corners to read or chat, the park is perfect for slowing down. On weekends you’ll often find local musicians and artisans. A lovely spot to stroll, relax, or enjoy the local vibe.
Beautiful park with good kids playground in San Miguel De Allende. Very nice equipment for kids. Neat toilet next to the playground and some small shops for snacks and drinks.
Clean park with a lot of greenery and paths to walk. There is a basketball court and a fun looking playground.
Absolutely beautiful! This is an ideal spot to relax, meet friends, enjoy the breeze, and/or read a book. On the weekend there are artists selling their creations. It has a much more relaxed vibe than the market in Le Jardin in Centro

The best part of this B&B was the concierge service and local knowledge by owner Bill, who has lived in SM and operated his B&B for 25 years. He recommended restaurants and outings, made the reservations, arranged the drivers...all from his encyclopedic knowledge of the town and its people. Plus, our best meal of the day was always his team's home cooked two-course breakfast.
This hidden gem of a museum is really worth spending a couple of hours in, if you are interested in the indigenous cultures of Mexico. Museum consists of a very extensive collection of masks, all used ritually and superbly documented. Bill has spent the last 30 years going around indigenous communities collecting the masks and learning about the ethnology surrounding the masks and their use in ritual dance ceremonies. His wife Heidi, and art teacher and artist, has cultivated strong relationships with local artists and artisans and introduced us to some of their work. We had a wonderful time with Bill and Heidi and felt very privileged for the experience. Experiences like these are what makes San Miguel such a special place.
Enchanting B&B - Includes Museum! We had a tour about the indigenous masque performance and got a close look at a huge masque collections from over all over Mexico. Bill and Heidi were very passionate about explaining to us. We were really impressed with their vast knowledge which is full of interesting and important historical events. We also got to tour their home with beautiful rooms, realizing how incredible each and every part of B&B place is so well decorated. Most of all the entire building is a work on art in itself. We felt really welcoming and would definitely recommend everyone at most ages to take a visit here.
Absolutely wonderful stay. The entire place is filled with interesting art (some made by Heidi, the amazing host/proprietor). We had such a good time here. The breakfast is amazing, you start you day with a bountiful meal with several courses! There was even a surprise birthday cake for another guest. Don't forget to visit their mask museum, a collection of ~1000 masks from many local cultures. Truly spectacular and will definitely stay again if we return to San Miguel!
Casa de la Cuesta is an absolutely amazing place to stay if you plan to visit San Miguel de Allende! Owners Heidi and Bill are genuinely nice and hospitable, plus the variety of breakfasts they serve each day are unbelievably delicious and plentiful. I stayed at this peaceful B & B for an entire week during Sept. 2018 and was truly delighted with everything! Be sure to check out all the beautifully-furnished rooms, outdoor terraces, colorful courtyards and don't miss the unique Mask Museum out back.
I wish I never had to leave. Everyday starts with incredible homemade breakfast served in two courses. The first course being fresh fruit and yogurt with granola toast and jellies. The second course was hot food prepared fresh by the three Cooks it was a different meal every day and each day you were left satisfied without the need to eat again until 3 p.m. in the afternoon. On site there are two incredible opportunities to learn about post Hispanic Mexican Ceremonial Masks and Mexican Folk Art. Please see the very hospitable hosts Bill and Heidi to make an appointment to visit their cultural facilities, many people come to the location just to visit the folk art gallery & Mask Museum. The rooms are beautiful and clean with plenty of hot water and room to move around. There are more than half dozen great places to view the surrounding area from. There is also a nice Honor Bar located near the hummingbird feeders and I promise you the hummingbirds do not disappoint. All of the great attractions of San Miguel de Allende are within walking distance of the facility. A very inexpensive cab ride can be had at all times of the day that will take you anywhere in the city for a little over $3 including tip. This is the most comfortable place I've ever stayed at. The staff were courteous efficient and friendly. The hosts arranged for massages on site for my wife and I on more than one occasion. Everyday you can see gorgeous sunsets from a variety of terraces and patios. My favorite part of the experience was the time I got to spend with Heidi and Bill the skillful owners and curators of Casa de la Cuesta. They seem to effortlessly run a top notch operation that provides everything a guest needs to experience San Miguel de Allende. The beautiful couple arranged our airport transfers, gave us great tours of their cultural facilities, served a delicious breakfast every day, provided knowledgeable concierge service, shared their experience of building and growing their wonderful B&B and made us feel like we belonged in their home. It was an incredible treat to stay at the Casa de la Cuesta.
I recently stayed in this wonderful bed and breakfast as a single tourist for a week. The owners Heidi and Bill could not be a nicer couple and very accommodating to all my needs. Heidi even offered me some pizza and salad the night I arrived which was around 10:30. The breakfasts were outstanding every morning with a variety of items including yogurt, fresh fruit, toast , eggs and usually a different Mexican side dish. There was always plenty to eat. My room was very nice and decorated in my favorite color blue with beautiful tile work throughout the bathroom including the bathtub. It had a nice sitting area along with a fireplace. The decoration was lovely with Mexican art work throughout. I was always given a fresh container of water every day so I never had to go out and buy any. One of the things I thoroughly enjoyed was watching the hummingbirds by my room, I had never seen so many in one area. The view from my balcony overlooked the city showing the famous Parroque church. I would definitely recommend this bed and breakfast to anyone going to San Miguel.
Casa de la Cuesta was wonderful! We stayed in "Roman Lopez" and loved the very special outdoor living space where we could sit in the afternoon and enjoy the cool breezes and watch the clouds of hummingbirds at the feeders while sipping a beverage from the "honor bar." The service exceeded all of our expectations, and the atmosphere was friendly and gracious. Breakfast was a great opportunity to meet and greet guests and catch up on what others had done the day before and were planning for that day. The breakfast meal was superb, with a change in the menu every day. Bill and Heidi have created a perfect oasis in the middle of San Miguel.

Absolutely beautiful place and completely worth the visit. I got some bad information online and got here too early and had to wait for over an hour for them to open. They open at 10:00 AM sharp. It was completely worth the wait. It is a small church so it won't take you but 30 minutes to see it all unless you want to sit and pray. VERY IMPORTANT. If you are coming from San Miguel de Allende get a cab and negotiate the price including the wait time for the cab to wait for you to see the sanctuary and to return you back. You will not be able to find a cab to return back to San Miguel.
This church is absolutely stunning and truly a masterpiece of architecture and art. Every inch of its walls and ceilings is adorned with incredible paintings and intricate details, creating a breathtaking visual experience. The atmosphere inside is both awe-inspiring and peaceful, making it a perfect place for reflection and admiration. I was thoroughly impressed by the craftsmanship and the beauty that surrounds you at every turn. Whether you're interested in history, art, or simply looking for a remarkable place to visit, this church is definitely worth your time. I highly recommend taking the opportunity to explore and soak in its grandeur—you won't be disappointed!
Truly Magical! Almost like a movie - inside the sanctuary beyond doors your eyes will see a visual explosion of the most majestic faith and religous sight — every wall, ceiling, and corner narrates the passion of christ. From floor to vaulted ceiling, the sanctuary is filled with intense religious imagery — angels, demons, indigenous motifs, poetic verses, and sculptural illusions that blur the line between painting and architecture. Far beyond a church, it is a sacriligious pilgrimage. I sadly arrived when mass was over, try to arrive before 10:00 am and consider paying extra if you are with a driver to go back since there's no public transportation. There must of been a holy celebration as I was given yummy and authentic sweet and spicy mole with garbanzos and juice in a bag and straw (Yes - very Mexican) I truly recommend visiting this once in a lifetime site!
As someone ( a logical, 6’-3” very common sense man) who is not normally emotional… my visit here literally brought me to tears. Cannot even begin to describe how humbled, overwhelmed, spiritual, and yet tranquil I became while walking thru this space. While some say it’s like the Sistine Chapel.. I found it to be 100 times more intense. Words cannot even begin to describe my experience. While many may not feel this.. it engulfed me with a sense of peace from God to be more understanding, compassionate , patient and spiritual. If there are miracles .. this can be chalked up to be one of them. Will be returning soon.
Mind-blowing. We have seen hundreds of churches around the works and this one is really different with the incredible ceiling works. Well worth the extra time to get there from San Miguel de Allende.
It's a special place, a church decorated like no other declared a UNESCO world heritage site the Sanctuary of Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco, located in Atotonilco, Guanajuato, Mexico, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was designated in 2008, along with the historic town of San Miguel de Allende, for its outstanding example of Baroque art and architecture and its cultural significance as a place of pilgrimage and historical importance in Mexico. Once a year there's a pilgrimage from the church all the way into San Miguel de Allende at 3:00 a.m. in the morning.
It was pretty neat. It probably takes longer to get to than to see, but it was worth the trip. I caught the bus from de Luz and animas in San Miguel at 9:30am and got to the Sanctuary minutes before it opened at 10. After spending about a half hour seeing the place (there was only one room to see), I only waited a couple minutes at the bus stop to head back to San Miguel. Admission was free, but you can make a donation.
In case there’s no guide to “overhear” let me tell you: the paintings are not “frescoes” as the ceiling was plastered years before it was painted. It has been re-painted, finished 5 years ago, so the colors are bright. The store beside it benefits the church so buy something! They have bakery items too - the granola is superb! I wish I could go back and get more!

This Galeria is a must-see in Mexico. Many pieces incude information and photos of the artists which is highly personalized. The varied selection is beyond your imagination and calls for you to return again and again. The staff is highly educated, helpful. Rooms are brimming with color, texture, and rich history. Pieces are available from all the of Mexico and it is one of the most important galleries in Latin America. Don't miss it!
This gallery sells an incredible amount of high end Méxican and Central American (folk) art and furniture. There's nothing like this in downtown San Miguel de Allende. Very much worth the trip to Atotonilco.
I collect Mexican folk art so I was excited about visiting Galeria Atotonilco. It met my expectations and more. The owners travel Mexico and handpick work from talented artists. Atotonilco gallery has the most extensive high quality work I have ever seen. I love the pieces I found to add to my collection. Give yourself plenty of time to take i this wonderful place.
The Gallery is an amazing collection of Mexican folk art from around Mexico. As soon as you enter you get a feeling of the care and affection the curators have for Mexico and its traditions. I bought a rebozo (a large Mexican shawl) that was the finest I had seen in our Mexican travels and that I wear frequently. Definitely worth the trip.
All i can say is that I’ve never seen anything like Galeria Atotonilco. It’s not an exaggeration to say that their sprawling selection of Mexican folk art is incredible. I actually live in San Miguel de Allende and I visit the galeria a few times a year on my own just to see what new artists and techniques they are featuring. And when people visit me, I make sure they see the galeria—you can spend over an hour there and not see everything.
This is a must visit place if you're in San Miguel de Allende. Only a few miles out of town, this gallery has an extensive collection of Mexican folk art. It's worth a visit and a wonderful place to find a one of a kind souvenir or artwork for your home.
Galería Atotonilco, founded by the late Mayer Shacter and his wife Susan Page, remains one of San Miguel de Allende’s most inspiring art spaces. Mayer, who passed away in 2024, devoted his life to collecting and sharing the beauty of Mexican folk art, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy. Together with Susan, he built a space that feels both like a gallery and a cultural sanctuary, filled with color, history, and craftsmanship. Today, Susan continues to honor his vision, keeping their shared passion for Mexico’s artistic heritage alive.
Normally, I adore this fabulous place, but it lately it apparently is not being run very well. We arrived right at 11 am and someone casually rolled up at 11 30 to open the gate. There were about 7 people waiting all that time. And no apology or explanation. Not a good look for a place that caters to expats and upscale Mexicans.

One of the highlights of our trip to SMA! Chef Ruben was so fun and personable and planned an amazing dish for us. Walking through the market to buy the ingredients was so fun, and the meal we made was one of our favorites of the whole trip. Can't recommend enough!
Inquired on classes and zero response, going on 6 days. Additionally they list 2750 pesos per person for a group up to 12 and state $165 USD, however that's an upcharge. Conversion equals to $133 USD. They also overcharge for 1 person if you're a solo traveler, taking advantage of people. $330 for 1 person and they're conversion rate is incorrect. This practice is unethical and quite alarming. As a Chef, I'm quite disappointed in their lack of professionalism.
Great place to learn some authentic cooking. You start with a trip to the local market to buy your fresh ingredients then back to the kitchen to cook the food. The food was delicious. Very educational. If you want to pick up some local cooking tips and flavors. Started around 11am also have a 3 pm class. Takes about 2.5 hrs. Great experience.
Ruben was an awesome instructor. He was calm, patient and friendly. We made a beautiful meal of panucho, fried bean-stuffed tortillas with salsa and chopped pork topping. We loved this experience!
My granddaughter and I took the class and were very disappointed. I had taken it 3 times before and enjoyed it, but this time, we really got short changed. We made one dish and guacamole. That was the entire menu. We were served a beer, but not the margaritas we had had before and no dessert. I have recommended this to many people, but I will no longer do that. For the cost, we definitely did not get value. I’m sorry to see that this has happened. We live in San Miguel six months of the year, with many visitors. We will be doing other cooking classes!
Chef Ruben first takes you through the market to buy today’s ingredients. Then we made cochinita pibil, a red sauce, guacamole, and an escabeche of habanero and red onion. The sauces were layered with unexpected flavors and ingredients, such as nopal flower buds and puya chiles. He is truly a master. Everyone was involved in the preparation and we all loved our meal.
We spent the afternoon with Chef Rueben. Went to the mercado to gather our produce, meat and cheese. Then back to the kitchen to prepare one of the best meals! It was a typical menu but there was nothing typical about it! So incredibly tasty and unique!!!
ONE THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN SAN MIGUEL! Chef Ruben and Pilar are just outstanding. They would work on plates you request in advance. I went once, and went back for FOUR more classes. They offer very traditional mexican cooking recipes that will delight your palate.

Nice historic resident/museum. The entrance was free and the only charge was 60 pesos if you wanted to take pics.
Great museum to learn about Allende and life back then. Minimal fee for adults. Older than 65 free and childdren free. Note there was a minimal fee of 65 pesos to take pictures.
If you want to know about the beginning of San Miguel de Allende, the beginnings of México's War of Independence and the military insurgency of Ignacio Allende, this place is a must see. Very informative displays of the history of all the above including video presentations in all the rooms. The main floor mostly speaks to the history of the area and the economy at that time. The upstairs presents personal information on Allende's family, living conditions and Allende's insurgency. Also, on the top floor, tucked into a corner, is a very detailed display of the Cañada de la Virgen archeological site.
Allendes house , not too big , but good way to go
It is located in the center of San Miguel on the corner with the main church. The entrance is $70 MXN (price per person). It has two floors. In this museum you will be able to appreciate a lot of the history of Mexico's independence, plus you will feel like a visitor since it was the Allende house. You will find simulations of what their rooms, kitchen and other areas of the house were like. You can read in Spanish and English (but in a very limited manner). It is a must to understand how Mexico fought for its independence while learning about the day to day life of the Allende family,
This museum was ok, it felt empty and it did not have many artifacts some displays were empty.
Amazing and historic place, whit many rooms whit a lot history, beautiful designs, recommend place if you are visiting San Miguel de Allende, you need enough time for visit all rooms and enjoy this wonderful building whit beautiful view, it's located in the middle of this Town, beside of the principal cathedral.
Cool quick visit. Simple few furnished rooms and a cool old pharmacy.

We visited the Instituto as photographers of F&L wedding and its was more than perfect! Its terrace is spectacular, with a lot of history, beautiful architecture, very open and amazing views from San Miguel Downtown and the Cathedral of San Miguel Arcángel. The place just dives you in a magical atmosphere in a super intimate celebration! All the architectural details like arches, columns and ironwork combined with the beautiful, elegant and airy decorations gave a touch of beauty and splendor to the whole gathering. F&L wedding was an amazing event, everyone was involved feeling the night’s love, the gorgeous energy and of course, enjoying the dance floor with the breathtaking views from San Miguel. The staff was professional and helpful for creating a memorable experience for the couple allowing me and my team to focus on capturing the emotions and genuine connections that made this day so special. All that being said, if you want romantic, historic, and artistic wedding in San Miguel de Allende - Instituto Allende is the perfect venue!
Gorgeous courtyard area with some excellent murals and an area being set up for a concert at back left that had a nice partial view. A cafe serves food in the courtyard and while the food looked excellent I didn't eat there. Bathrooms were spotless.
Fun little place we accidentally stumbled upon while hoofing it through the streets of San Miguel. We took a break and admired its murals and art while taking advantage of its many benches and garden views.
Quiet on weekends, bustling with cultural activities and workshops during weekdays. Don't forget to go all the way to the back, to admire 1950 wall paintings and a nice view of the Cathedral.
A visual feast that tells the history of Mexico from ancient times to the present day through documents and photographs.
Worth a visit. This is part of the country house of the Canal family, who owned a lot of property in San Miguel. Great little cafe. My husband had a chicken salad stuffed avocado. I had the Chile En Nogada. Great murals. Interesting galleries. Beautiful views of the Paroquia. A lot more happening here when the world isn’t fighting covid. Pleasant courtyard to enjoy for a cod drink or breakfast or lunch.
I guess everyone might be too timid to check out Mi Casa on the back side of El Cafe. Too bad! What an oversight. Best venue for great music, drink and dinner. And what a fantastic view!
Such a cool space! The mural in the courtyard on Mexican history is beautiful. I also got a jugo verde in the bistrot which was really good - their food menu looked amazing too. Wish my stay would have coincided with a workshop.

Wow!! This is such an amazing place to visit! Bring your camera and plan to spend time examining the tile mosaics and artwork in detail - there is a lot to look at here. The dining room ceiling is a dazzling piece of art with hundreds of inlaid mirror fragments. The interior of the house is a delightful jewel box of color and artful treasures. Plan to arrive on time, because there are so many amazing things to look at.
Today we went for a short ride out into the countryside to an art opening at the Chapel of Jimmy Ray. While we have lived in SMA for two years, this was our first time visiting. It definitely will not be our last. The buildings are beautiful and are pieces of art themselves. The grounds were enchanting. The gallery space had beautiful works from some really talented artists (we ended up buying a painting and Stacy got a beautiful hand dyed and hand made silk scarf). We listened to live music, sampled a new (for us) brand of mezcal, ate tamales, and had a wonderful time. A great way to spend a lovely Saturday afternoon.
I didn't know what to expect before coming here, but I left feeling very emotionally charged. The array of mosaics, structures, and art works is staggering. Our guide was fantastic explaining the whole story and meanings behind the works. I would highly recommend visiting here.
Anado the artist responsible for creating this Marvelous place had died Easter Sunday, we learned from the Uber driver on the way there. Richard, his lifelong companion greeted us and told us it was the first tour he’s given after his friend’s demise, and got emotional... very touching. On a few acres there’s a dazzling area of art installations, art work inside whimsical buildings, 100-yard long murals, and a highly colorful main residence. Exuberant creativity, dazzling colors, pure love of Art and Form. Definitely a not-to-miss experience for Art lovers....
If you haven’t visited this place, your trip to San Miguel isn’t complete. Richard is a fantastic host with incredible stories about how he and his late partner built the property. If you make a reservation, be sure to honor it. During our visit, four women arrived late, while ten others simply decided not to show up—extremely disrespectful. The guide mentioned that others were on a waitlist and could have taken their spots. Worse, those who skipped out didn’t pay, despite the significant effort required to maintain this special place. Please be considerate and support it—otherwise, it may not be here next time. I suggested that Richard require payment when making a reservation, ensuring that if someone cancels last minute or doesn’t show up, the property still receives compensation.
What a whimsical magical land of art, love, passion, and creativity. The Chapel of Jimmy Ray exceeds all expectations. It is hard to put into words the energy that encompasses this dreamy fantasyland. Hearing the stories firsthand from Anado's partner Richard, as he navigates you through the mystical grounds truly pulls all of the heart strings and takes you to other realms and dimensions!!
We visited this out of this world gallery on Monday 26 Nov 2018. A must visit when in San Miguel de Allende. Admission of US$10 or 200 peso is well worth the visit.
Muchas gracias Richard. We really enjoyed and were absolutely amazed by your home and gardens! Añado, Carlos and friends - wonderful artists who have created memorable works of art and fantasy! Thank you for sharing. We highly recommend a visit to wonderland!!
