What a gem of a place! On the left bank of the Shannon river in Athlone, just down from Sean’s Bar in a little cluster of other establishments.
Service is outstanding – the servers work as a great team and I was checked on throughout my time with everyone that worked there. Never had to wait for anything.
Food is also remarkable. I had a dish from the specials menu: Halibut with salsa verde and a side of circular chips and a small salad. Splurged on the sticky toffee pudding. Excellent selection of non-alcoholic beverages of all sorts!

Such a vibrant place, always busy and buzzing but the food was terrible. I ordered the mushroom bruschetta with parmesan which was lovely (and the only good thing I’ve had that evening), burger which was very dry and their lava cake for dessert which was very dry as well. It feels like that cake has been on the fridge for ages, that all the moist that it should have was all gone. You can even see it in the picture.

The oldest pub in the world!! We knew we had to make a stop here on our way from Ashford to Powerscourt. It did not disappoint. There are wood chips on the floor, great decor everywhere you look, part of the original wall of the building, plus they have a great outdoor-ish area if you walk all the way through. Every dish was delicious yet exquisite. Size of Yorkshire pudding threw us away when it got served 😆
Recommend to get Ham hock starter. We shared between two and almost fight for the last spoon.
I had the duck main and it was falling apart from bone and no knife work was needed. On the other hand, beef was a little tough to cut them. They gave the normal knife and we had to ask for steak knife. In the middle part was not edible to chew but the rest was gorgeous.
It’s a shame that we again had to share the dessert because we were too full.
Some Christmas parties were going on right next table so it was quite loud time to time.
Definitely would like to come back for dinner after Christmas.

We took a trip to Athlone to visit Thyme on a recommendation. Well worth it and we'll definitely be back. A lovely welcoming small dining room. Very friendly staff who are comfortable and confident speaking about the dishes. And what a meal. From start to finish it was beautifully presented but more importantly very very tasty. I loved everything about it. The food down to the finest detail was fantastic. Couple that with Irish hospitality in a lovely dining room and you have an experience to remember.
I opted for the 5 course menu for €65 per head . Very reasonably priced.
We had the crispy hens egg and the wood pigeon for starters, followed by the lamb and brill and finally the chocolate, salted caramel tart and the rhubarb and liquorice something. Everything was delicious.

Absolutely incredible, we stumbled in on a whim and were blown away by the food, we had black pudding starter, prawn wonton and the smoked mackerel rillette set a high bar, but the main course blew us away! Absolutely amazing food, the best of the best ingredients, all fresh, super delicious.
We had 2 starters, 2 mains, 2 desserts, few extras and drinks.. lots of excellent tasty food.. the chicken was very tender and the 14hours braised beef was the best softest meat meal I have ever tasted.. even the mash potato and carrots were delicious.

I was there at the weekend with my family. Had a warm salad with chili beef. It was very tasty was was missing something to go with it. Too chili and vinegary on its own. We hadn’t made a reservation, but the manager helped to get us a table where we could stay for an hour and a half. We accepted and did not regret it. We came here on impulse as we were stopping in Athlone for one night and had the most amazing time. Fantastic service from Rebecca and Petra who are absolute stars. We were in Athlone for a few days at the end of September. We loved the Viking tour out of the town Athlone, Ireland. My husband and I boarded on the water outside the castle. It's a block or two from Sean's Bar( one of the oldest bars in the wolrd). Athlone and the surrounding area are steeped in Nord's history. Your tour highlights the transformative nature of the area and its Christian, Nord, and natural history. These two cultures had frequent clashes through out history. The tour discusses those hisories as well as the local flora and fauna of the natural world here. The ride on the water here is exhilarating and beautiful. We were fortunate to have the boat to ourselves. They serve drinks and snacks. An irish coffee was on the menu. It's a 1.5.hour tour well worth taking. Loved it.

Great experience taking the Viking tour both down the Shannon with our guests from Canada on Saturday. Staff were very helpful. A great crew member worked the bar and made the best Irish coffee ever. Certainly warmed my cockles! Really helpful when boarding and alighting. Lovely boat trip on the Shannon river. The trip started from in front of Athlone castle and went upriver to Hodson Bay and then back again. It was really lovely getting to see the riverside and Lough Ree from a totally different perspective. The Captain gives a very informative live commentary about the river and some of the land marks. You can buy alcoholic drinks and snacks from the galley. Tea and coffee can be had for free. Thoroughly enjoyed myself and I would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Athlone. No parking available when we checked in at 8pm in the lashing rain. We were directed by front desk to a place down the street which was also full. Had booked dinner in the restaurant but the it was the bar/ brasserie with huge TV’s in every corner and apparently there is no other restaurant, so the website is very misleading on that front. Our reserved table was directly under a huge tv and the World Cup rugby was on!! My ideas of a quiet evening meal was obviously not going to happen. They had nowhere else to accommodate us so we ate dinner at a coffee table in the lobby. Then a one man band took over where the rugby ended & Nathan Carter & Joe Dolan tributes were the order of the evening. We asked to go to the resident’s lounge & we were told we were sitting in it…the lobby!!! We retired to our bedroom to discover the Tv wasn’t working….must have been the only one in the hotel not working. We were offered a change of room but the heat wasn’t working in it so we stayed put. A group of people were having drinks out on the balcony beside us & I’d have preferred to watch Graham Norton than hear their conversations. I thought I could trust the Radisson brand but definitely not. I didn’t book online as I wanted to check the restaurant facilities & parking and booked direct through the hotel reservations. So you can imagine my horror when I arrived.

This review will not be about the hotel rooms - but about the responsiveness and integrity of its employees! Because we must remember that the administrator, or the receptionist on duty, is not only about excellent service for hotel users. But also an indicator of responsibility, humanity and motivation to choose the hotel in which he or she works.
It was a bank holiday. One evening on 05/05/2025, my Yamaha motorcycle broke down near the Radisson Hotel. I asked if it was possible to park the bike in their parking for 1 day. He said the parking is only for hotel guests and cannot help. But he said that you can find an inconspicuous dark place to park the bike. I was a little upset, thanked him and went to look for a place. In the process, I met a hotel resident who agreed to provide his place for free. In the morning, I called the hotel and a girl answered me in a pleasant voice. I asked her to tell the tow truck (evacuator)or the police that the bike was broken if they arrived. That this was not impudent parking in an unauthorized place. She agreed to help. Everything ended well and now next time, as a token of gratitude, I will choose the Radisson Blue Hotel.
