I was honoured that Matt went to the lengths he did to make this happen ! So off to Southern Cross Station to catch the 5.55am train service out to Shepparton. Trains and pies 👌 The presentation looked amazing, a golden colour all over the pie and had some sesame seeds on the lid. The pastry was baked to perfection and was of an even thickness around the pie. The pastry was semi crisp and wasn't too flakey. I must say the pastry tasted really good - a credit to the bakers. Moving on to the good part, the filling. The pie smelt unreal. I don't think you could have fit anymore lamb into the pie combining that with garlic sauce, onion tomato and cheese it was a match made in heaven, a true souvlaki lover's dream. The consistency of the filling was spot on, the meat to gravy ratio was also good. No question about the pie stability, that was great and the serving temp - spot on. My final verdict - 10/10 ! This was the ultimate pie. The taste was sensational, they nailed the filling wrapped in a pastry that was baked to perfection. The pie was of a decent size and weight and I reckon it was priced accordingly for the product. Well done Matt - if this doesn't win a gold medal the judges need replacing. I was pretty chuffed about having a pie named after me, in saying this if any bakeries want to take up the challenge feel free to get in touch ! Vanilla Slice $5.50 🏆 Well I've tried both of Australia's best, Banana Boogie Bakery's and Northend Bakehouse's. First thing I had to be educated by Matt on how to eat a Vanilla Slice hahaha ! The presentation looked great, a nice sheen on the icing, the custard tasted amazing and the base was nice and crisp. The slice stability was good, holding it upside down I was unsure if it would fall apart and it didn't. The 2 Vanilla Slices were pretty good, not much between them both, but if there was one winner it would be Matt's Vanilla Slice. The presentation of Northend's looked slightly better in my opinion. I will include a photo of Banana Boogie's vanilla slice so you can compare the pair. Except for on the monarch’s birthday this year, a prime opportunity to grab a vanilla slice while we were up north in regional Victoria. This review rating is for the vanilla slice. We were very excited, especially after their vanilla slice won awards for the best in the country. So far the best we have had was at Banana Boogie Bakery in Belair (Adelaide) and nothing has come close to it. So let’s talk about North End Bakehouse’s (Mooroopna store) vanilla slice. It’s a decent serving of a slice, fluffy vanilla custard sandwiched between pastry and topped with icing. Sounds simple? Yes, delicious, you bet. Custard was light, tasty and had a great mouth feel. Pastry was fresh, and tasty. Overall flavours were great, and we would say one of the best we have had in Victoria! We can’t think of a place that beats it in Victoria, Melbourne bakeries can learn a thing or two from North End. The custard was the winner, we need that on top of our overnight oats we make on the daily. It’s that good! We do have a couple gripes through, and one has to do with the overall texture. The custard takes over, as the pastry is very thin, and therefore didn’t provide the balanced texture when devouring it. If the pastry was a bit thicker it would be a winner in the texture department. Texture over taste! And the second point is it needed a tad stronger vanilla flavour, it was present but more of an undertone, yes it’s a personal preference but this is a personal review. Charlene and I debated over this whole sharing one, took back and forth about it, and we concluded, for our taste palettes , a bit more vanilla and a thicker pastry would have made it better. Plus a thicker pastry would have given the whole slice more structural integrity as the pastry crumbled very quickly and you’re left holding the slice by the custards (unless you’re a eating with a fork then it’s a moot point). Nonetheless, and overall, it’s a very tasty vanilla slice, or should we say ‘a slice of heaven’. Therefore we rate the North End Bakehouse vanilla slice a 4/5. So what about Banana Boogie in Adelaide, well that’s going to be a separate review, but our ‘gut’ is scoring their version a tad higher due to the pastry thickness and texture, on top of their yummy custard. We also had the choc mint cookie at Northend, that was a 5/5. No doubt. Intense mint squished between two halves of a choc cookie is a winner in anyone’s book. Need more of these in our lives.
