Words cannot amount to how wonderful this establishment is. The food is warm and hot with unique tastes. The iced tea was my favorite but I must celebrate the steaks and the fish. The butter is creamy and delicious with the breads. Denni Jo (Manager) and Savanah were fantastic showing me around the historic structure. Most beloved were the paintings. A sense of Texas pride and history billows over the entire place as you eat but the feeling is one that elicits joy in being part of the State of Texas. I recommend this place with all of my heart. Travel a bit beyond the northern Houston city limits, take the 11th street exit in Huntsville and make a right into the parking lot. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

We enjoyed a delicious dinner. The Spinach Artichoke dip was full of flavor. The House salad was exactly what I dreamed it would be. The Republic Steak was cooked perfectly. I added the Compound butter and loved the robust flavor.

We celebrated my brothers 80th birthday at 1836. Gilbert Garza was so helpful with our reservations and making sure they could accommodate all requests to make my brothers day special.
The hostess/waitress worked so hard and made no errors. Food was delicious and atmosphere was rustic and comfortable. Everyone in our party kept saying how good the food was and what a great job our server did. Gilbert made sure everything was taken care of to make my brothers day special.

My rating is really about 4.50! The bartenders excel at their business! The Sazerac I ordered was a tad beneath Commanders Palace but not much! I appreciated the bartender, assessing my tolerance for absinthe before he made my drink.
My wedge salad could’ve been a little more chill. This makes the iceberg lettuce really crunch. Otherwise, it was fresh and delicious.
I really enjoyed my steak. It might’ve been a little overdone for me but again it was delicious.
The macaroni and cheese was as good as everyone else says it is!
The desserts were lackluster. i’d suggest they try to make a really great bread pudding with meringue on top and a great whiskey sauce. If those that don’t like this, they could just use their current vendor.
Our table of four all enjoyed their dinner. We appreciated them, allowing us to bring our own bottle of wine, which they graciously served.
The staff was uniformly gracious and kind .
Reserving a table ahead of time and requesting a quiet area made our visit very enjoyable. 1836 is about the best year in Texas history in this restaurant does Texas proud.

Over hyped and over priced. It was quite possibly the worst fillet I have ever had. To be fair they did comp my steak but I would rather have had one I could eat afterall, that's why we went. In my opinion a floor manager is needed almost like a maitre d. The staff seemed completely ambivalent to one another. Just save your money and eat somewhere else!! Food is bland, old tasting, and way overpriced! I’m not from Huntsville and was just passing through and decided to stop and get my kids and I something to eat. I ordered the fried catfish plate for 18.99 I’m a big fish lover, with a side of potato wedges and Mac n cheese. My son got the junior burger meal. After like 30 mins the waitress brought our food out. By my surprise there was only 2 skinny fish on the plate and the sides. For the price you would think it would’ve been more. The worse part though is that the fish tasted super bland and had a very strong mercury taste. The potato wedges were cold and tasted old like the ones that sit out for hours in gas stations. The Mac-n-cheese tasted very smoked, like charcoal. We asked for Mayo & cheese only on my son’s burger, I even repeated my order and they still put onions. The waitresses had very soft spoken voices and it was so hard to hear them speak when it was loud in there. I will not be returning! Unseasoned highly overpriced food! Disappointed is an understatement

The fried pickles were very salty. We were told by our waitress that the pickles were salty that's why the fried pickles tasted salty.

It was a great atmosphere, great service, and the food was very very good. I had the chicken fried steak and it was one of the best I've tried. The portions are not big but they were filling enough so that you still have room for pie. Only down side was we tried to order pie and they did not have our first or second choice available. Being as we were there waiting on them to open I know it wasn't that they sold out. It was good enough that we will definitely be back, for me mostly in hopes they have that Salted Carmel Pie. Our Lunch started out with complimentary rolls and broccoli Cornbread served with preserve and butter now that's country and I like it I had the Monte Cristo the wife went with Tortilla soup served fresh and hot. Everything was great a hint of chicken fried on the batter got better with every bite, rarely will the wife compliment her soup as it has to be just to her taste so I was a little caught off guard when she exclaimed That was good, made just right! I was shocked! We finished it off with the coconut cream pie a perfect ending to an enjoyable experience with our Grandkids that we only see every so often. We tried this place while driving to the area. We were greeted right away and seated. Elsa our server was very friendly and helpful. I ordered the Ribeye medium and it came out picture perfect. Been to many steak house chains and all they do is cook steak and can never get it right. Here was perfect first time out. My partner got the Catfish which was cooked until flaky and perfect. Would give zero stars if I could. I have been in the food service for over 20 years. All the way from an I hop server on up to general manager of a new dairy queen in fort worth I helped open. So I understand the dumb crap that customers do. However today we came in for breakfast like we do all the time. When we first came in our server was very nice and polite. Promptly got our drinks, took our order, and our food came out hot, fresh, and quick. My fiance went to put pepper on the eggs, which is in a grinder. He literally twisted it twice and the top popped off. Obviously it was broken before he used it. Our server came back over to bring our extra butter that i asked for, and was surprised about the mess of pepper all over his plate and the table. My fiancé was really cool about it he just wanted a clean plate and was going to transfer it over. Our server took his plate back to the kitchen for him and asked if they could remake it which was really nice of her. However, the whole time they were remaking it they proceeded to call my fiance stupid, and talk crap the whole time. The wait staff and kitchen staff was very rude. Now I know they are going to talk trash about stuff like that, but you probably shouldn't do it loud enough where we can hear you as we were sitting right in front of the kitchen. The server brought his food back and asked my fiance if he knew how to use the pepper now. She never checked back on us, and when she brought the check out she slammed it down on the table. This place might be my new favorite burger place. I ordered the cowboy. It had lots of bacon, cheese, tons of caramelized onions, and BBQ sauce. I’m not sure what type of beef they used but it reminded me of snake River farms beef. It was so amazingly flavorful and juicy. The onions were perfectly cooked teaming up with the tower of bacon. The French fries we good sized and heavily seasoned. They came out nice and hot. We also got an order of onion rings. They were bomb as well. Waitress was super friendly and accommodating and the place is clean. My husband said his chicken fried steak was okay but had more breaded pieces then meat.

To be fair, their menu literally says they are no frills and all about serving good food, which would be fine if the food was good. The portion size for their entree is about the only compliment I can give. You order a steak? You're getting a big steak. You order a burger? You're getting a big burger.
It's barely seasoned though. A paltry scoop of butter less and barely salted mashed potatoes is not a good side dish. Calling a small bowl with a few chopped up leaves of lettuce and a single tomato a salad is almost criminal. Fries that are hard, lukewarm, and barely salted are a disappointment.
The strong smell of incense in the entrance to mask the stench of the restrooms is not a good look either, and if having the AC on the Summer, in Texas, is a "frill"... The owners might want to add a few frills.

The burgers and fries were okay... Just not the bacon! I Ordered a bacon cheese burger which is about $8 and when i got it no bacon was on it. I thought okay not a problem just go up there and ask for them to add bacon. Then they gave me a thing of it wrapped in foil and I went back to my table. Best burger in town. Hot and fresh burgers cooked to order. Bacon was nice and crispy, not burnt, but just right. Cheese way hot and melty in the middle. Not the biggest, but packed full of flavor. The receipt always shows the specific burger orders correctly but upon opening my burgers, they are messed up. I’ve been eating Arby’s for years from the East Coast all the way back to Texas and in between this is without a doubt the worst Arby’s I have ever eaten at worst service I’ve ever had in a fast food restaurant. The woman working the register taking the orders was probably the rudest person I’ve ever dealt with. Absolutely could tell she was hating her job and it showed. When the order came out it was wrong.
