The Igreja de Santa Maria, also known as Faro's Cathedral, is a Catholic cathedral with a rich history dating back to the 13th century. It was elevated to Se Catedral de Faro in the 16th century and still preserves some of its original architectural elements such as the bell tower and two chapels.
Ofcourse, must visit when in Faro for a great view of the Marina and sea. It was good to see the chapel of bones, museum but highlight for me was the tower, the views from the tower. There was not very long line for the tickets. Ticket was 5 £ pp. I would recommend visiting.
Shraddha — Google review
Lovely view from the top of the tower, the bells are in working order so be aware that they are loud if you’re quietly enjoying the scenery. There’s a display of historic clothing, which is interesting. The shrine of bones is small and missing all the skulls. The inside of the cathedral is quite impressive.
Marisa P — Google review
The Cathedral in Faro is a charming historic building with a lot of character. The real highlight is climbing the tower, where you get fantastic views over the old town and the surrounding area. That said, parts of the cathedral and museum feel a bit run down, and the €5 entrance fee seems a little steep for what’s on offer. It’s best to see the fee more as a small contribution to preserving the place rather than paying for a polished attraction.
Waldseeschloss — Google review
It’s absolutely worth a visit! The Cathedral is beautifully decorated and even has a charming little garden. Your ticket includes access not only to the Cathedral itself, but also to the museum, the fascinating bone chapel, and the tower. I especially appreciated the multilingual information provided for each piece of art, which makes it easy to understand the history behind them. Climbing the tower is definitely rewarding — it offers a wonderful panoramic view of the city. A very complete and enriching experience!
Attila F — Google review
Gorgeous cathedral in the historic centre built in the Gothic style in 1249 which replaced a Muslim mosque, itself built on a Roman temple ! Some notable vestiges of its origins remain, such as the tower and the large ogival portal. The two side chapels of the transept, surmounted by ribbed vaults, also in the Gothic style, date from the 15th century. Plundered and burned down in 1596, it was remodeled many times. Worth seeing are the late 17th-century azulejos that adorn the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Rosário and the tomb of the knight Rui Valente.
Enjoy L — Google review
Very touristy, but it's a tourist area so you can expect nothing less. Still quite busy considering it's off peak. Doesn't seem to be to expensive. Getting around using the Bolt app.
Muddyboy C — Google review
It is beautiful, with great art from the Barroc. It is 5 euros. It is worth it. You can go up the tower with beautiful views.
Jaume E — Google review
Also known as Sé de Faro, is a decently looking and historically rich landmark located in the heart of the Old Town. It sits proudly in Largo da Sé, surrounded by cobbled streets and peaceful orange trees, offering a tranquil contrast to the more modern parts of the city. The cathedral combines Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements, reflecting the many changes it has undergone since it was first built in the 13th century. While not as imposing as some cathedrals in larger cities, its charm lies in the details like the intricately carved wooden choir stalls, decorative tiles, and peaceful inner courtyard. One of the highlights is the bell tower, which you can climb for panoramic views over Faro’s historic center and the nearby Ria Formosa lagoon. It’s a short but slightly narrow and steep ascent, so be prepared, but the view at the top is well worth the effort. The entry fee is modest and includes access to the cathedral interior, the tower, and a small religious art museum. It’s a quiet and contemplative stop that doesn’t take too long to explore but leaves a lasting impression thanks to its peaceful atmosphere and historical significance. The Cathedral i definitely worth visiting, especially if you’re already exploring the Old Town. It offers a calm and beautiful experience with a glimpse into the city’s religious and architectural heritage.

The Municipal Museum of Faro is a historical convent-turned-museum that hosts both permanent and temporary archaeological exhibitions. It is just one of the many sightseeing highlights in Faro, which also include Praia de Benagil, Castelo de Silves, Gruta de Benagil, Cathedral of Faro, and more. Visitors can explore the local culture, enjoy great dining options and find accommodation for every budget. Additionally, there are opportunities for shopping, nightlife entertainment, and relaxation.
We were so glad we made the trip to the Municipal Museum of Faro. This is a terrific insight into the history of the region and the people who lived there in years gone by. Architecturally, it is perhaps, one of the most beautiful buildings in Faro and most of it can only be appreciated from within the confines of its walls. I have attached a selection of photographs to whet your appetite to make the visit but why would you not? It is in the heart of the city and could not be more interesting. The entrance fee is very modest and worth so much more. The art is just so inspiring and the buildings themselves, so peaceful .. one could spend an hour just drifting between the walls and the garden. The exhibitions are clearly labelled and there is something there for everyone - we noticed people of all ages enjoying this museum. Well done Faro!
Tim R — Google review
Person at the desk was not very friendly after we asked to pay by card but that seems to be a thing in this region... Museum had some very interesting things to see and read from during the greek era, the romans and 17th century. We did hope to learn a bit more about some other very interesting parts of history in Faro for example the raid by the English duke, reconquiring by first king of Portugal or perhaps the interesting story by the people from the nearby village of Olhao that stood up against the French occupier and started the civilian rebellion and afterwards 17 couragious men without navigating skills sailed over the ocean to Brasil to tell the king of Portugal about the revolt. Very interesting pieces of history that I would have liked to learn more about.

Great museum to visit in Faro. The museum has many pieces of art. Modern paintings (modern art) but also paintings from 1500-1800. Unfortunatly some paintings are in bad conditions and require restoration. Most of the old paintings are religious art, there are many paintings with Maria and Jesus. There are also many stone structures with inscriptions from the Roman time. They also have a huge Roman mozaïek that is beautiful to visit. The museum itself is in an old monastery and is a lovely place to take some good pictures. When we visited on Sunday morning the entrance was free, that was a nice bonus. Overal, a great place to get an impression of all the art that has influenced Faro.

One of the most beautiful places in the city! The building itself is stunning, and its exhibitions offer a fascinating insight into the history of Faro and the Algarve. I was lucky to visit during a festival, which meant extended hours—perfect for exploring at a leisurely pace. A must-visit for history lovers!
Daniel V — Google review
A pleasant space with quite a wide variety of exhibitions, including modern art to antiquities from the Romans It could have used a bit better documentation for context, locations of items found, etc
Mark W — Google review
A little gem tucked inside a former convent—history never looked so good! The Municipal Museum of Faro is like a time-traveling treasure hunt through Algarve’s past. Housed in a gorgeous old convent with peaceful cloisters and Roman mosaics just casually chilling on the floor (yes, really), it’s the kind of place that surprises you at every turn. From ancient Roman artifacts to religious art and quirky local history, it’s both charming and enlightening without ever feeling stuffy. Bonus points for the serene courtyard—perfect for pretending you’ve stepped into a period drama. If you enjoy a mix of culture, calm, and a little curiosity, don’t skip this spot. It’s a delightful way to soak up Faro’s soul!
Sam N — Google review
16th century former convent /cork factory built on the site of the ancient Jewish quarter now a museum with Roman artifacts from the city's past along with a permanent collection of religiously themed paintings and a rotating exhibit of modern art. The building has been beautifully restored; the gargoyles decorating the columns of the interior courtyard are especially delightful.

Arco da Vila is a magnificent 19th-century neo-classical archway that serves as the grand entrance to Faro Old Town. It stands as an intricate landmark near the marina, offering visitors a glimpse of the city's rich history and culture. The arch also marks the remains of the original Moorish wall, adding to its historical significance.
Arco de Villa is a very calm place with old churches. We relaxed on a rooftop at the Cidade Vieja restaurant for some good drinks and appetizers. Prices comfortably priced.
SUZIE L — Google review
A Feathered Welcome to Faro's Charm. If you’re heading to Faro, you absolutely must check out Arco da Vila! This isn’t just any old archway; it’s a grand, feathered welcome to the beautiful old town. As a nature enthusiast, I was particularly charmed by the storks that have made the top of this arch their home. Watching these majestic birds nest and preen against the backdrop of historic architecture was an absolute treat. The arch itself is an impressive piece of history, but let's be honest – the real stars of the show are the storks. It's like they’ve decided to set up a luxury penthouse suite right in the heart of the city. Their nests are massive, and seeing these big birds so close is something straight out of a David Attenborough documentary. Once you’ve taken in the storks’ grand entrance, step through Arco da Vila and prepare to be charmed by Faro’s old town. Cobbled streets, quaint shops, and delightful little cafes await you. It's like stepping back in time, but with all the modern comforts you’d want. So, whether you’re a bird lover, a history buff, or just someone who enjoys a good bit of urban wildlife, Arco da Vila is a must-see. Come for the storks, stay for the old town’s charm – you won’t be disappointed!
Shaheen S — Google review
Fantastic place to visit when in Faro Portugal. Beautiful cathedral at the end. Worth the short walk......
Lashen N — Google review
It's an impressive arc, but after all, it is just an arc. I really enjoyed storks nests perched atop of the arc. You can walk through the arc and admire an old town or not walk through and admire the marina, which wasn't that impressive.

Some people say that Faro is no worth a visit, but that’s totally wrong! The city has a lot to offer and has very nice looking buildings and cozy streets and places. We visited the city in June 2021, when we stayed in Estoí. We’ve also had a negative advice about Faro, but this turned immediately out not to be true… !
Frank V — Google review
The Arco da Vila in Faro stands as a remarkable architectural gem and a significant historical landmark. This neoclassical arch, constructed in the 19th century, showcases the work of Italian architect Francisco Xavier Fabri and was commissioned under the supervision of Bishop Francisco Gomes do Avelar. Historical Significance: Built in 1812, the current structure of Arco da Vila replaced a medieval gate that once formed part of Faro's defensive walls. This monumental archway links the charming Old Town (Vila Adentro) with the bustling modern center, providing a transition between the city's rich past and its vibrant present. It was erected to commemorate Portugal's restoration of independence from Spanish rule in 1640, an event of great national importance. Intriguing Facts: A fascinating aspect of Arco da Vila is that it still preserves within its structure an ancient Arab gate dating back to the 11th century, a relic from the time when Faro was a Muslim city known as Santa Maria. This blend of medieval and neoclassical elements lends Arco da Vila a notable uniqueness, reflecting the complex historical tapestry of Faro. Visitor Experience: As you pass through Arco da Vila, note the small image of Saint Thomas Aquinas, the patron saint of knowledge, symbolizing the light of wisdom guiding both residents and visitors. Additionally, a statue of Saint Anthony is perched in the upper niche, reinforcing the portal's religious significance. Tips for Visiting: For the best experience, visit Arco da Vila at sunset, when the light enhances its architectural details and the view through the arch towards the Old Town is especially picturesque. Be sure to explore the Old Town itself, where cobbled streets and historic buildings create an atmosphere that transports visitors back in time. It's a perfect spot for photographers and history enthusiasts looking to capture the essence of Faro. Including Arco da Vila in your travel itinerary is essential for understanding the historical and cultural evolution of Faro, serving as an ideal starting point for exploring this charming city's rich heritage.

It is one of the attraction you should visit in Faro. The old small town not too far from the Centrum and harbour. Some buildings look unkempt and need to be renovated otherwise it will be damaged. What I like the most is Orange trees.

Located slightly inland from the Old Town walls, Igreja da Ordem Terceira de Nossa Senhora do Monte do Carmo is an 18th-century Catholic church renowned for its gilded baroque architecture and the legendary Capela dos ossos, or Chapel of Bones. The chapel is adorned with carefully arranged bones of monks, creating a unique and somewhat eerie atmosphere.
I'm not a religious person at all, but this church is small but amazing place to visit. Once you've paid your 2 euros, you enter the main church hall (wow), steeped in history, and absolutely beautiful, dripping in gold decorations of representations & organs. You move through a small door to further depictions of christ, then you go outside, toilet, and a graveyard where ordinary people are buried, then the chapel which is covered throughout with human bones & skulls, all above 17 years, some skulls look younger, but told no by the attendant.
Smithy — Google review
Quite a short visit. Church is ornate, went to see the bones really. A bit of a strange experience. Very small place so whole visit was only 15 minutes but well worth the 1 euro fee.
Doriver L — Google review
2 euro entrance fee and very nice inside. The bone chapel is made from the bones of a thousand monks, very interesting to see. When you come out just over the road is a cafe to eat and drink and opposit here is another church to go inside which is also very charming.

We really liked this place. The church was beautifully ornate and it contained Christian relics and symbols. The church alter was was nice and small. It was really picturesque too. The chapel of Bones was also inside the campus that you can visit with the same 4 Euro ticket.

The Parque Natural da Ria Formosa is a true gem of the Algarve, spanning over 60 km of coastline. This protected area boasts diverse landscapes including lagoons, marshes, and salt lakes separated from the ocean by a chain of islands. The park is home to various crustaceans, mollusks, and native bird species as well as migratory northern European birds during winter.
Very spectacular view of this wetland from airplane taking off from Faro, unique geography. If visiting again, I will try to walk around.
Chen L — Google review
Tides shape the experience; check schedules to see sandbars appear and vanish. Birdwatchers will love the variety—bring binoculars. Boats can link islands, but walking paths give quieter moments. Sun reflects off water intensely; sunglasses help. Pack light and embrace detours. It’s a gentle landscape where small details—shells, reeds, ripples—steal attention from grand vistas.
Mariana S — Google review
The park’s lagoons, marshlands, and islands provide a sanctuary for a diverse range of wildlife, which makes it a fantastic spot for birdwatching and nature photography. The boat tours are a must-do, providing an intimate look at the diverse ecosystems and the unique fishing communities on islands like Armona and Culatra. The guides are knowledgeable and passionate, making the experience educational as well as enjoyable. While the commitment to conservation and animal welfare is evident, and it’s heartening to see such dedication to preserving this slice of paradise, some areas could benefit from better signage and maintenance. Also, the availability of amenities like restrooms and cafes is limited, which is something to keep in mind when planning your visit.
Y. T — Google review
We thoroughly enjoyed this park. Very inexpensive 3.20 euros, gorgeous views, a visitor center, the flowers were simply splendid & seeing the crabs dive into their holes was funny & fascinating. Would love to go back some day.
Harriet D — Google review
Awesome place! Did we see chameleons? Unfortunately not, but we did see storks, two kinds of grey birds, thousands of crabs and a beautiful park. Really worth it! Recommend a visit. The recommended hike is only 2.5km so its nice if you're looking for a short activity
Inês E — Google review
Pretty for a walk. I did a wildlife boat tour they were friendly but didn’t see much of anything. But it was relaxing. I would skip the boat tours.
Vie X — Google review
A beautiful park that's home to a huge variety of wildlife and has some of the best sunsets I've ever seen. Depending on the time of year the tide will usually be in during the morning, then out until the evening, so be careful not to get caught out walking in the marshes. Otherwise there are plenty of permanent paths so that you can walk around the little salt lakes and admire the wildlife. Look out for flamingos and other types of birds if you visit!

Faro Old Town is the perfect introduction to this enchanting city, offering a delightful journey through its rich history. As you wander through the narrow cobbled streets, you'll be captivated by the white-washed buildings and inviting plazas that create a charming atmosphere reminiscent of days gone by. This historic area is not only picturesque but also brimming with character, making it an essential stop for anyone wanting to experience the true essence of the Algarve.
Faro old town is a pleasant and laid back area with some historical elements, cafe bars and picnic shops. We enjoyed spending a day here, looking at the chapel of bones, cathedral, castle walls, marina and strolling around the old area. Also there were Storks nesting on building ledges, lovely to see. All in all nice thing to do.

I had a great time exploring the old town of Faro — it’s full of charm, lovely streets, and a great atmosphere. The only downside was that parking was quite difficult to find, especially during busy hours. Other than that, it was a wonderful experience and definitely worth a visit!

Beautiful and unique. Love to see how it is so beautiful of the old city still remains here.

The Old Town of Faro, also known as the Cidade Velha, is one of the Algarve’s most charming and historically rich districts. Enclosed within medieval walls, this beautifully preserved area offers visitors a serene, time-travel-like experience through narrow cobblestone streets, whitewashed buildings, and peaceful squares lined with orange trees. Unlike the more commercialized tourist zones of southern Portugal, Faro’s Old Town retains a relaxed, authentic atmosphere that invites slow exploration and reflection. At the heart of the Old Town is the Arco da Vila, a neoclassical archway that serves as one of the main gateways into the historic core. As soon as you pass through, you feel like you've stepped into another era. The streets are quieter here, the pace is slower, and there’s a palpable sense of history in the air. Wander a bit further and you’ll arrive at Largo da Sé, the central square dominated by the Sé de Faro (Faro Cathedral), a stunning mix of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. Climbing its bell tower rewards you with panoramic views over the tiled rooftops of the old town and the Ria Formosa lagoon beyond. Throughout the Old Town, visitors will find remnants of Faro’s Roman, Moorish, and Christian past. The municipal museum housed in a former convent offers fascinating insight into the city’s multi-layered history, with archaeological pieces and religious art on display. Strolling through the area reveals hidden courtyards, art galleries, small artisan shops, and cozy cafés where one can sip a coffee or enjoy a local pastry like the almond-based queijinho do céu. One of the most rewarding aspects of Faro’s Old Town is its quiet elegance. Unlike Lisbon or Porto, where the crowds can sometimes be overwhelming, Faro offers a more intimate experience, particularly outside peak hours. The golden light reflecting off ancient stone walls, the scent of citrus in the air, and the soft murmur of local life all contribute to the Old Town’s undeniable charm. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a cultural explorer, or a photographer looking for character-filled streets and historic facades, Faro’s Old Town is a place that lingers in memory. It’s a destination where every corner reveals a new story, and every step connects you to the long, layered narrative of the Algarve’s capital.

Faro Marina is a picturesque and lively port area with a scenic waterfront promenade. It's popular for its night lights and the iconic 'Faro' sign, making it a favorite spot for photographers. Visitors can enjoy the view of fishing boats and yachts while sipping drinks at waterfront cafes or seafood restaurants. The marina offers opportunities to rent equipment for water activities like jet skiing or book boat trips to see dolphins.
It’s nice and safe to walk at the marina during day and night time. Great for watching planes and during our walk we sighted Michael Jordan plane. We also enjoyed petting a street cat. There’s a boat dock that provides tour/cruise if you want to see the coast.

Faro Marina is a beautiful and peaceful spot right in the heart of the city. Perfect for a relaxing walk, especially during sunset, with scenic views of the boats, palm trees, and the historic old town in the background. Plenty of cozy cafés nearby make it a great place to sit back and enjoy the atmosphere. Highly recommended for a laid-back afternoon

A small marina on the edge of the old town, access for small boats only underneath railway bridge! Lots of small boat tours go from here. There are a few bars and restaurants, a nice place for a wander. When we visited there was a mini street market between the marina and old town along the walk way.

Faro Marina is a really relaxing place to spend time, especially in the evening. The boats, palm trees, and calm water create a lovely atmosphere. I went there during sunset and it was beautiful the sky turned orange and pink, and the light reflected on the water perfectly. I took some amazing photos! There are also a few cafés and restaurants around, so you can sit down, have a drink, and enjoy the view. It’s a great place to unwind at the end of the day.

I visited Faro for first time and it was amazing. The weather was so nice and there is so much to explore, specially riverside with all the historical buildings, restaurants, bars, cafe places and many more places to see. Also in riverside you can see trains passing by and you can catch a boat and go see the islands and the beaches. It’s beautiful in evenings, you can just enjoy a drink in a bar and watch the sunset with lovely view to the river.

Welcome to a charming little garden where you can find shaded seating on benches. It’s nestled in the heart of the historic city of Faro, Portugal. It is a perfect spot to relax and take in the surroundings! Plus you can refresh yourself by grabbing an artisanal gelato from the nearby by Gelateria.

Very pleasant park which was already a main square during the Christian conquest and it has always maintained its centrality provided for it has always been linked to administration offices and port activities. Before the 17th century it had important buildings around such as the Hospital and Church of Mercy. In the late 19th century it would change its name to Codfish Garden, due to its shape. Throughout the 18th and 19th century the Customs House and Civil Govern (Central Administration office) are built. With several alteration to its initial surroundings (establishment of a branch of the Bank of Portugal, a fire department, tax offices) this space is considered the city centre, integrating Faro’s Historic Centre.

A pleasant, well-maintained park where peacocks roam. There are a few interesting installations, plenty of greenery, and a playground. Overall, it’s quite clean, except for an overflowing trash bin and some scattered litter around it. But given the number of children on a weekend, it’s not surprising. Otherwise, the park is wonderful. Also where're several big tables so you can have a party or picnic.

Museu Regional do Algarve, also known as the Regional Museum of the Algarve, is a charming ethnography museum located in Faro. It offers a glimpse into traditional Algarve culture through its collection of paintings, artifacts, crafts, and furniture. The museum showcases agricultural implements, musical instruments, house interiors, model fishing boats, black-and-white photos of the town and local beaches from before tourism took off in the mid-20th century.
Recently visited the Museu Regional do Algarve in Faro and it's truly a hidden gem. Though it might be smaller in size, it's packed with rich insights into the region's heritage. While the staff didn't speak English, their smiles and genuine kindness spoke volumes. It's a testament that language barriers can easily be transcended with heartfelt gestures. A must-visit when in Faro! Entry is €2 cash only.

It is a shame that this museum would only accept cash. I travel frequently and rarely come across places now that will only accept cash, especially for a museum or a typical tourist place to visit. It may be worth the visit as less than 2 Euros or so per person but we could not visit as we do not carry much cash anymore. The kind lady on the front desk does not speak any English but tried her best to explain what she could. Fortunately being able to understand some Spanish, we could make out what she was saying.

Igreja da Misericórdia, located in Faro, Portugal, has a rich history dating back to the late 15th century. Initially built as Ermida do Espirito Santo in 1499, it was later replaced by the current church and an adjacent hospital at the end of the 16th century. The building stands out for its unique Greek cross floor plan and features a remarkable mannerist retablo from the early 17th century.

(Translated by Google) Important to visit...! It is classified as a Monument of Public Interest. At the moment, it is unfortunately closed to the public! A unique church in the Algarve, and one of the few in Portugal, with a centralized plan, rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake by the architect Francesco Saverio Fabri, commissioned by the Bishop of the Algarve, Francisco Gomes Do Avellar, who began the works in 1795 and finished in 1815. As far as we know to date, the Genoese architect, Francesco Saverio Fabri, is not only responsible for the famous and world-renowned Arco da Vila, but also for the entire reconstruction process of this church and the adjoining hospital complex that would operate until April 17, 1979, the date of the inauguration of the new District hospital complex. Architect Nicolau de Frias is in fact the initial architect; he is the one who builds the "Church of the Holy Spirit of the Village of Faram" on the site of the "Church of the Holy Spirit of the Village of Faram," between the years of approximately 1554 and 1600, a work commissioned by Bishop D. Afonso de Castelo Branco. Previously, on January 10, 1518, the Misericórdia of Faro provided assistance to the sick in the "Church of Santa Maria, of Faram," more precisely in the "Chapel of Santa Ana, where the Misericórdia is now located," now the Cathedral of Faro, in its Chapel of Our Lady of Pleasures. The Capela dos Ossos de Faro, also known as the Bone Chapel, is a small chapel built from the bones of over 1,200 monks exhumed from overcrowded graves in the 19th century. The macabre yet unique sight features skulls and bones lining every surface and incorporated into geometric designs. Located behind the Igreja do Carmo, this Baroque masterpiece is a symbol of Faro and is worth visiting for its spectacular facade and steeples.
Eerie yet worthy — a must visit if you’re at the area. It won’t take more than 10 minutes to see the church and the chapel. But it will definitely make you put some things into perspective. A 2€ ticket must be bought before entering the temple and the chapel. The visiting hours in Google aren’t correct - in September it’s open until 6 pm and not 5. Worth every minute!

In front of the church there is a small door on your left which is the entrance. It cost €2 for the entrance. When enterinf the building you see the church but if you move further in you will reach a small garden where you can find the chapel with bones. It is quite intriguing when you enter the chapel. Nice to see for not more than 30min.

This Chapel was very beautiful 🤩. I was disappointed to find out that I had to pay one euros for entry in cash. You also have to pay €1 extra to use the bathroom. The chapel is beautiful and then there’s a little garden that leads you to the room with the skulls of previous priests. I would recommend to go but to bring cash.

I'm not a religious person. But I love architecture and unusual places. This qualifies in both areas. Beautiful interior and a fascinating Chapel of Bones. Which is exactly what it says it is! Well worthy of a visit if you like interesting places and is only 1 euro to visit. What more can you ask?....

The walls, columns, and ceiling vaults were decorated with the bones and skulls of over 5,000 people, which were collected from the city's cemeteries. This holly place was built Franciscan monks. In the 16th century, the city's numerous cemeteries were taking up too much space. Franciscan monks decided to exhume thousands of skeletons from these cemeteries to be reinterred in a more organized and special way within the chapel. Highly recommended to visit this chapel 💒
Natalija B — Google review
A must visit in Faro, this church with in the garden its special chapel which was built in the 17th century at the initiative of three Franciscan monks, so that locals could reflect on the transience of life and to get a clear allegory of death. More than five thousand bones and skulls adorn its walls, ceiling and columns of this chapel, all sourced from the city's cemeteries. (Price for entry is 2€) If this review was helpful, hit the like button 👍
OVHK — Google review
Built in 1816 using the exhumed remains of over 1,000 Carmelite monks. The chapel is adorned with around 1,245 skulls, meticulously arranged into geometric designs across walls, pillars, ceiling, and even its altar. Measuring roughly 4 × 6 meters, making the experience feel immersive, and somewhat spooky. Worth the €2 fee
Marisa P — Google review
Located behind the Carmo Church, is a small and somewhat eerie site built using the bones and skulls of over 1,000 monks. While the idea and history behind it are certainly intriguing, the actual experience felt a bit underwhelming. The chapel itself is quite small and only takes a few minutes to visit. The display of bones is interesting from a historical and cultural perspective, but it’s not as striking or elaborate as similar chapels in other parts of Portugal, like the one in Évora. There’s very little information provided inside, which makes it harder to fully appreciate the context unless you do some reading beforehand. The entrance fee is modest, but the visit feels more like a quick detour than a main attraction. If you’re already near the Carmo Church or passing through the area, it might be worth a brief stop, but it’s not a must-see on its own. Overall, the Chapel of Bones in Faro offers a glimpse into a unique piece of religious and cultural history, but don’t expect a particularly memorable or immersive experience.

Praia da Ilha Deserta, also known as Deserted Island Beach, offers various boat trips to and from the island. Some excursions take you beyond the lagoon into the Atlantic Ocean for dolphin watching. The island features a beautiful beach with opportunities for walking, sunbathing, and collecting seashells. However, access to the island may be challenging for those with mobility issues due to steep stone stairs.
I think I’ve just discovered my new favourite place in Portugal. 🏝️ Praia da Ilha Deserta is pure bliss — crystal-clear turquoise water, soft sand scattered with beautiful seashells, and not a single piece of rubbish in sight. Everything feels pristine and cared for, with plenty of bins around to keep it that way. You can rent comfy sunbeds, and the on-site restaurant even offers takeaway drinks and food — perfect for enjoying right on the beach. It’s so easy to lose track of time here, you could happily spend the whole day soaking it all in. 🥰 The ferry is €5 one way, but remember to buy your return ticket at the kiosk. Tip: don’t make our mistake and book your return too early — you’ll want to stay longer than you think! A truly stunning spot that’s absolutely worth a visit. 🌊✨

It's a nice place slowly ruined by excess tourists. Even if you're local with a boat, you can feel the added pressure during August. For visitors, be aware you only have one restaurant and one bar at the beach. Both quite expensive. So not for everyone.

This place is only reachable by boat too - the shuttle takes roughly 25 mins to get there. It has a beautiful beach, and the decking path that runs a couple of kilometres through the reserve lands you in the middle of it. The boat drop off is next to one end of the beach though, so it's easy to get to for the less able. Despite the barren look of the reserve, it is particularly fragrant and has a lot of bird life.

When you think of the quintessential beach experience, Praia da Ilha Deserta in the south of Portugal ticks all the boxes. I recently spent an entire day here, and it was nothing short of blissful. From the reasonable rental prices for umbrellas and chairs to the serene and scarcely populated beach, every aspect of this hidden gem contributes to a perfect day of relaxation and enjoyment. One of the most appealing features of Praia da Ilha Deserta is its name, which translates to "Deserted Island Beach." True to its name, this beach offers an unparalleled sense of tranquility and seclusion. Unlike many other beaches that are often overcrowded, this location remains relatively empty, even during peak seasons. This gives visitors the rare opportunity to enjoy the beach’s natural beauty without the usual hustle and bustle. For those seeking a peaceful retreat from the chaos of daily life, Praia da Ilha Deserta is an ideal choice. The beach itself is a picture-perfect scene. The clear, turquoise waters gently lap against the soft, golden sand, creating an inviting and serene atmosphere. The panoramic view is nothing short of spectacular. As you lounge under the shade of an umbrella, the endless horizon and the rhythmic sound of the waves offer a meditative experience that’s hard to find elsewhere. Whether you’re an avid photographer looking to capture stunning landscapes or simply someone who appreciates natural beauty, this beach provides a visual feast. Renting amenities here is both convenient and affordable. The cost to rent an umbrella and chairs is quite reasonable, which is a significant advantage for those planning to spend the entire day at the beach. This thoughtful provision ensures that visitors can relax in comfort without worrying about bringing their own gear. The process is straightforward, and the staff is friendly and accommodating, enhancing the overall experience.

Easy ferry trip convenient from Faro. Restaurant on the island along with lounge chairs and stray shade umbrellas if you want it. Otherwise lots of space to do your own thing.

This place is amazing. Book more hours if it's a sunny day!! We booked 2-3 hours and it wasn't enough to eat and sunbathe. We didn't book the restaurant in advance and we got in, but I did hear some people got caught without a reservation in the restaurant so perhaps book that- the restaurant is amazing- it looks like local people go to the island just for the restaurant. The food was delicious. The service was 5 star. As we were at the beach off season all the umbrellas were available without paying but the seats were tied away. The weather was so hot, so we sat under an umbrella on a beach towel. The water is steeply sloped but lovely. We didn't have time to do the walk around and the beach so we chose the beach- so I recommend booking more hours - the place is not boring in the sun - it's paradise- moreeeeee!!!
Nik M — Google review
Very nice beach for walking and tanning. Getting off from the boat onto the island might be a bit tricky for people with mobility problems and there are some steep stone stairs. Lots of beautiful seashells all along the beach. It is really a desert island, so don't expect shade or greenery. There is a nice restaurant with good AC if it gets too hot outside. I would recommend their coffee and ice cream.

Formosamar offers a variety of experiences for tourists visiting the Algarve coast. One of the highlights is the opportunity to spot playful dolphins during dedicated boat trips, increasing your chances of encountering different species. The region's main marinas advertise ocean boat trips, with dolphin watching being a particularly cherished experience due to the large numbers of common and bottlenose dolphins in the area.
I had an amazing boat tour yesterday! The crew was friendly and knowledgeable, and the views were stunning. We saw beautiful little islands, hidden coves, and if you are lucky you can also see playful dolphins. We explored nice lagoons, experienced low tides and high tides, and saw a variety of birds and crabs. We also explored a manmade channel, a desert island, and the Faro Islands, where the lighthouse is located. We stopped to see both islands and enjoyed a cold drink by the frontier of the ocean. It was a perfect day out on the water! A special thanks goes to Carolina who introduced me to this tour. ;)

Vert nice experience, visiting the desert island and the faro island, having a bath in both of them, and probably it was our lucky day, we've seen a pod of dolphins swimming near our boat. The skipper was so kind and explain us everything in clear way. RACCOMANDED.

The Algarve Life Sciences Center, also known as Centro Ciencia Viva do Algarve, is a hands-on natural science center located in a historic building in Faro. It offers guided tours and interactive exhibits suitable for all ages. Visitors can explore the touch tank with local marine creatures from Rio Formosa Natural Park and an arachnid exhibit. The museum features permanent and temporary exhibitions, providing an educational experience for both children and adults.
One of the best museums for kids. They have a small glass aquarium with starfish, sea cucumbers, sea urchins and small crabs. They provide a tour in English and Portuguese. You also get to put some of the Aquatic animals on your palm. Tip: At the center you have to pay in CASH for the tickets . AND if you buy online ,pay 1€ extra. It is worth a visit when you are in FARO with KIDS.

We visited this place a few days ago: Our 11 year old daughter loves science, especially biology and sea creatures. The fantastic marine biologist Ricardo explained beautifully what was living in the open aquarium; children were allowed to take certain creatures in their hands. AMAZING! Happy memories forever!! We will be back!! It’s a rather small museum but full of interesting discoveries and informations! Highly recommended for every science enthusiast!

Interesting small museum primarily aimed at children to experience various natural phenomena through interactive play. The other part of museum is aimed at undrestanding the principles of conservation and impact of natural forcen on the natural environment. You are done in one hour but ovetall the visit was worth the entrance fee.

It's not particularly big but fun for an hour or so with children. We especially loved the touch pool where a member of staff told us all about the animals in the pool, it was fascinating, worth the entry fee alone.

A lovely place to visit with the kids for an hour. Only €12 in and they had a touch tank and everyone got to hold sea urchins, star fish and sea cucumbers. Friendly and informative english speaking staff as well.

Such lovely staff, brilliant informative and interactive displays! Great value and a great way to learn about the local ecology. You can tell the staff really care. We were especially surprised how much was in English (we had our translate at the ready but didn't need it much) and how much the staff made an effort to speak English and even helped us correct our Portuguese (which definitely needs work!). Great mix of displays and even a touch pool where we got to hold a starfish and sea cucumber, well worth the money for both adult and child alike!!

LAB Terrace - Sunset Bar is a stylish and simplistic lounge located south of Faro Marina, offering unparalleled views of the Ria Formosa wetlands. The venue features bistro-style seating and comfortable sun loungers, perfect for enjoying breathtaking sunset displays. It offers a variety of drinks including wines, cocktails, champagnes, sangrias, and bar bites. At times it becomes vibrant with live music and DJs.
Cool place for sunset drinks. Nice vibe. Great view. Good music . We spent a few hours here. I can imagine sunsets can be spectacular here
David C — Google review
I think this is the best spot in Faro to enjoy the sunset while having a drink. Very cool bar with friendly staff. The place is popular and gets filled up early, so I recommend going early. Prices aren't too crazy. Non-alcoholic options are available if you are not into drinking. Highly recommend this place.
Dhanuka P — Google review
Lovely atmosphere and good service. However the view was spoilt slightly by the overhead power lines of the train track. Not the fault of the venue but still not ideal. The worst part was the Pina Colada. Might be the worst I’ve had anywhere. Full of pulp to the point where you have to pick it out of your teeth. I can appreciate it being made with fresh pineapple but it really ought to be strained before serving
Half J — Google review
Laid-back rooftop bar with beautiful sea views. It’s an ideal place to watch the sunset over Faro. The drinks are great value, service is quick and the music is good. We weren't offered any bar snacks with our drinks, but overall its great. Would recommend if in the area
Vicky — Google review
Beautiful sun terrace with a fantastic view over the lagoon and those little grassy islands around Faro. The scenery is truly stunning, especially at sunset 🌅 Prices are absolutely fair - a glass of white wine is around €5 and really pleasant to drink. Service was friendly and welcoming, which made us feel comfortable right away. Two small points of criticism: First, there aren’t really any proper snacks to go with the drinks. I definitely missed some small tapas, or peanuts, or maybe something warm or even just a portion of fries - anything to nibble on while enjoying the drinks. Second, the music selection could be a lot more stylish. The place would be perfect for some laid-back synthwave, poolside vibes like Flamingosis or Kraak & Smaak, or even cool Portuguese or Brazilian tunes like Gilberto Gil or Jovem Dionisio - Instead, the playlist was more of a “boring mainstream pop” mix with Ed Sheeran & Co., which doesn’t quite match the otherwise great atmosphere. 🎶🎹 Other than that, we had a wonderful time and would happily come back ❤️

Museu Marítimo Almirante Ramalho Ortigão is a three-room museum that houses a fascinating collection of maritime-related objects, including ship models and antique fishing gear. It also features a library for those interested in delving deeper into the history of boats and navigation. The museum offers insights into the region's natural history and its significance as a maritime powerhouse in the past. Despite being relatively undiscovered, it provides an enriching experience for anyone curious about maritime themes.
What a great find! I was alone in the museum, I don't know why it's not more popular. And it's free! The museum got me really interested in fishing and navigation. I recommend it to anyone curious about those themes. Now I'm going to buy a book about the history of boats and navigation.

This is a great little free museum! Make sure to check the open hours because they shut for a bit in the afternoon. There are loads of interesting model boats, paintings, fishing equipment and stories from Portuguese fishermen. We spent about 30 minutes here and it’s right next to the marina.
Eleanor F — Google review
A very small museum - it was basically one square room with models of boats and fish paintings dotted around it. The boats were made with great detail in fairness, especially the larger ones but we found it very small and we were the only people in there also. Also, it's not accessible - we had to carry our baby stroller up a stairs to get to it.
Deana H — Google review
We arrived at this small museum 20 minutes before closing and wondered if it was worth entering. We did as it was free of charge, and 20 minutes was enough se see the exhibits in the few rooms with history of fishing and maritime exploration. It was interesting enough, but not exactly a must-see on a visit to Faro.
T H — Google review
Very interesting experience, educational and fun. We learned a lot from the very attentive guide. Thank you!
Erina P — Google review
The Maritime Museum is open from 14:30 to 16:30 located on the second floor of the official port building - south west corner of the marina. Entrance is the same as the port building. There are a number of detailed models of Portuguese men of war - and a famous warship that defeated a large Turkish fleet single handed after Venetians ran scared. A detailed model of how tuna were caught off the lee of Faro. No entrance fee just be interested in the sea.

Praia da Ilha da Culatra is a secluded and well-preserved beach in Faro, only accessible by boat from Faro marina or Olhao. The ferry takes visitors to the peaceful fishing village of Culatra, where colorful houses are connected by cobbled paths. A short walk through the dunes leads to the unspoiled beach, mainly frequented by locals. The area offers crystal-clear waters and a pleasant boardwalk for strolling.
Very wide beach with beautiful white sand and clear turquoise water. Water is not too cold and the waves are amazing. If you go to the left from the entrance there is a lot of place and it’s very private. There is also a beach bar near the main entrance serving some cold beverages, both alcoholic and nonalcoholic. There are chairs and umbrellas near the bar so it’s a nice place to chill.

Once you get off the ferry the lovely streets are full of little cafes and restaurants that you will want to have a quick drink in to cool off! The walk to the beach is beautiful and will take around 15 mins which when you get there will feel like nothing because of the stunning beach and crystal clear water….definitely one to visit if you can!
Huseyin G — Google review
Crystal clear and warm water. It feels like paradise. The walk from the boat through a broadwalk is very nice too. There are not many tides and you can walk into the sea a long time before you have to swim so it's ideal for kids too. It can be uncomfortable if there's wind so check weather beforehand. The reason for 4 stars is the absurd price you have to pay for the parasols there 20 euros full day and 15 euros half day.
Jorge B — Google review
Nice place for a day out. Lighthouse is visible from Olhao. Ferry trip takes about 30 minutes. To walk from Lighthouse via beach to three quater of the island takes about 2hrs. From the beach to Ferry Port takes about 20 minutes walk. It s worth to swim in the ocean. Water is nice and warm.
Maciej K — Google review
I love a clean beach… No plastic or trash, there are many garbage receptacles and these beaches are not overcrowded. You must take a slow ferry from Faro or Olhão to arrive, which can take 30-60 minutes. There is a small town on the island with amenities. It takes about 3 min to walk through this town and From there you have a 20 min walk through dunes to arrive at the beach, although a boardwalk is provided for ease of walking and to protect the environment… wonderful!
Shane K — Google review
Beautiful small island with restaurants and bars on the way to the beach. Some locals still live off fishing and there is even a primary school on the island. The beach is nice, bit it takes Abt 15 minutes to walk there from the port. Consider this if you have small kids with you.
L. F — Google review
It's a beach. No more, no less. Nothing here but lots of space - I like that, you may not. No toilets, no services, no nothing. But that's why we'll come back. It's a kilometre back to a cafe and about 4 km to Farol's beach bar and ferry. Its a great stroll if the wind isn't blowing - check in advance as its a proper trek into the wind.

Culatra Island is a 6km-long inhabited island that can be reached by ferry. It boasts a lighthouse, beaches, and a lagoon. The island has a relaxed atmosphere with a town surrounded by the sea, featuring local restaurants serving fresh fish and seafood at reasonable prices. Culatra is known for its uncrowded nature even during the summer season, offering a village with small shops, restaurants, and a beautiful beach perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of Faro.
One of the best beaches in the Algarve. The only hassle is to get here. Boats take off every 15 min from Olhao (ticket price 2:10€) which are over crowded this time of year. We took our own taxi boat which is more convenient and quicker (10 minutes vs. 25 mins with the ferry). In the tourist center in the "new marina" they charge you 35€ pp. Drop that and call the taxi boat directly, then you will pay 35€ for the entire ride even though you are more than one person. The beach at Culatra is obviously more crowded now than when I visited it last time (22 years ago...) but is still worth a visit. The beach now has sunbeds/umbrellas (15€ for 2 beds + umbrella) and a kiosk which serves drinks, ice cream and some snacks (crisps and micro burgers). All driven by sun panels (so you can pay cash, with Paypal app or Revolut app). The sea is also warmer than other areas of the Algarve due to the winds. Despite the effort, I strongly recommend to go here!

We had a fabulous day on Culatra. After getting the train from Faro, we caught the local ferry. It took about 30mins to sail over. Once you dock you walk through the quaint little town following signs for the beach, its easy walking on the boardwalk. After about 1km you reach the Atlantic ocean, the beach is spectacular with gorgeous sand & blue sea. We opted to walk along the beach to Farol. Took about 40mins, bit harder walking on sand but lovely to paddle. The beach at Farol is fine, perhaps not quite as nice as further along but still good. Spent few hours here, had lunch at the Maramais then got 4pm ferry back. A perfect day ⛱️🍻😎

One to the main Atlantic beach where at the end you will find a beach bar or cross the lagoon when the tide is out and walk on the north side to the island's tip where a small deep chanel seperates Culatra from Ilha Armona. An Ultra natural and protected area. Some of the tour boats take day trippers there for idilac paddling and canoeing. (See Captain Steve Tours). Remember Keep to paths not dunes. On this side....There is a lonely tree near a small broadwalk. Planted by a tiny seed and tendered regularly by a German who settled on the island and built a house on the lagoon from waste and flotsam. Died 2022 .. his casa is still there but sadly vandalised and much of his loved art work that decorated his casa gone. From the Atlantic beach you can walk to the village Farol where the lighthouse is and catch the ferry back to Olhao.

The beach here is off the track and worth the trek. Getting onto the island took an hour by ferry from Olhao. Once you make the seemingly unending 20 min walk, you step onto a beautiful beach. Clear, cold waters, lots of waves. Has one beach kiosk and could do with an extra toilet.
Michelle-Allyson O — Google review
Beautiful white sand island only accessible by ferry from Olhão. The beaches on the Atlantic side are impressive but the water is cold and waves can get rough but where it's more sheltered its wonderful. Dont miss out on exploring the lagoons and interior of the island, it's fun with the kids. Then grab a beer in one of the bars while waiting for the ferry back to Olhão.

Outro Lado is a charming vegan restaurant tucked away in the city center of Faro, offering a unique twist on traditional Portuguese cuisine by recreating meat-based dishes in a delicious vegan way. The restaurant's clean and beautifully decorated space sets the stage for an enjoyable dining experience. Guests can savor regional vegan dishes while being personally welcomed by the owner, adding a special touch to their visit.
Oh my goodness! This was such a treat. I had been on the hunt for dinner in Faro when I came across this gem of a place. As a veggie abroad, it can be super difficult to eat both traditional cuisine while maintaining a plant-based diet - this balance was struck perfectly at Outro Lado! I had three courses and a drink (the best aperol spritz I’ve had in Portugal) for a very reasonable price. Both members of staff were very kind and helpful. I couldn’t recommend this place more. The main course of “fried fish” is a must have - phenomenal.

I had the burger with fries and homemade mayo, a dessert that was too pretty to eat and too delicious to leave. As a drink I chose a peach kombucha. The service was excellent. Super friendly !! Very clean and cozy place. Bathroom is also very cozy :P Just one little thing : please make homemade burger bread ❣️ it would fit to your place that is already so full of love and care

The food in the place was absolutely incredible. I’ve been vegan for around 4 years and eaten a lot of vegan food and I could easily say this was one of the best meals I’ve ever eaten. It was nice to be able to go somewhere and order anything. Everything about the food is so perfect and you can tell there has been so much thought that has gone in to it. The flavours work so well. The staff were very friendly too, nothing was too much trouble. If you’re in faro and vegan you HAVE to go to this place. Best in the whole city by far.

Alcachofra Cafe, formerly known as Mel & Limao, is a charming vegetarian/vegan restaurant with gluten-free options. Despite its name confusion, it offers simple and delicious vegan lunches in a lovely location. The small menu features exceptional and tasty food, perfect for those seeking vegetarian or vegan options. The friendly staff and beautiful setting make it a delightful spot to enjoy fresh and healthy meals.
Great lunch. The menu was small but had a nice variety of vegan offerings. We had a couscous bowl and a wrap. Both were made with quality ingredients and were delicious. Had a big cup of herbal tea and chocolate cake for dessert. Welcoming environment and great service even though it was very busy. Would love to go back!

Lovely little vegan cafe in Faro. Really nice to be able to find vegan food easily labelled. My partner had one of the burgers and I had a Mediterranean wrap, we shared the fries. The food was good, you could tell it was freshly cooked. I think that my wrap could have been seasoned more or maybe had a sauce in it. But even so it was still nice. After we each had a cake (a chocolate cake, and a lemon cake). The cakes are made fresh daily, I thought the price €3.50 for each cake was reasonable especially given they gave us some kind of frozen raspberry alongside it. Overall would definitely recommend for some tasty vegan food in Faro.

We had a wonderful lunch at Alcachofra Cafe. There are plenty of vegan options available. We tried a vegan bowl, vegan wrap, and vegan burgers. There are also plenty of vegan cakes available (carrot, chocolate, banana). The atmosphere was very laid back and the staff was incredibly accommodating and friendly. For vegans in the area or visiting, this is a great place to have food in Faro.

We stopped here as we’d see some good reviews online. We got here just before the kitchen was closing and the lady in the restaurant fortunately said she would still feed us. We both ordered the falafel wrap and it was lovely, a really good sized wrap and very filling, absolutely delicious. There were some delicious cakes on display too but we were too full to try one. Maybe next time.

Beaches
Cabo de Santa Maria is a secluded and beautiful beach located on Ilha Deserta, also known as Barreta Island. Visitors can reach the beach by walking through the deserted island or taking a ferry. The journey to this southernmost point of Portugal involves a shuttle from Faro to the boat stop at Ilha Deserta, followed by a walk along the shoreline or through dunes over a wooden paved road.
Part of Ilha Desserta, or barreta island, you will reach this beach after walking the boardwalk through the deserted island. To find this secluded, quiet and beautiful beach is a real treat after a hike. Ofcourse you can also enter the beach immediatly upon arrival by ferry (€5) and there is 1 restaurant nearby. It's very nice to spend some time on such a quiet beach would absolutely recommend.

Moved a bit of the trash to make it a bit better. Its a shame some of the garbage but still an unique landmark. Took me approx 30 mins to get there (boardwalk on the right hand side as soon as you leave the ferry) and another 30 approx to come back through the beach.
Felipe P — Google review
Interesting collection of garbage but it is quite far away and don’t make the same mistake as me and cut it too short for the ferry back!
David — Google review
I'm sure at one time it was a very nice travel marker for those wandering the boardwalk or the beach, but it is starting to collect a bit of garbage and things people lost. The base of the marker with all the distance posts are great. It is large enough to easily make your way around this part of the island. A great idea to put in place for locals and visitors. Thanks.
Troy C — Google review
Getting to this point quite a trip. We booked a shuttle from Faro to get to the boat stop Ilha Deserta. From here there are two options to get at the most Southern Point of Portugal 🇵🇹, Cape St. Mary. You can go by a walk at the shore line or you can go through the dunes over a wooden paved road. At the end of the road you will find a nice wooden structure with the distance to several world cities!

Quinta do Lago Beach is situated on the Island of Faro, near the Golden Triangle tourist area. Despite being a popular spot, it offers a more secluded and tranquil atmosphere compared to other Algarve beaches. The beach boasts various amenities including bars, restaurants, and water sports facilities. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely time at this well-maintained beach while taking in stunning sunsets. Additionally, the area features paid parking and a wooden bridge leading to the restaurant and expansive shoreline.
A beautiful beach that you can enjoy expecially out of season when it's not crowded. It's just beyond a big dune that you reach with a long wooden path crossing ponds and marshes full of birds. Google maps sends you in the wrong place to park. Better to set gigi's bar as your destination and park in the paid parking closest to the path beginning. To get there you cross an area with stunning villas.

very large beach with low number of tourists because of expensive parking in summer. But beautiful nature reserve. But be aware of tremendous airplane noise starting from Faro airport
ILOVEALGARVE — Google review
We had the loveliest afternoon at Quinta do Lago beach. The water was warm, the sun was out and after a drink at Gigi’s we had a long walk along the beach before heading back to Faro airport. The perfect way to end our trip to Portugal.
Kalli P — Google review
Great beach but with few amenities. One restaurant. Presumably toilets available there if you need them. The beach stretches all the way towards Faro. The Ria Formosa runs alongside at the back of the beach with lots of bird life. Only the odd butterfly sadly. Parking is a paid for, secure area which seemed reasonably priced. Walk across the Ria Formosa on a wooden bridge to the restaurant and beach. Boarded walkway helped with our load, past the inevitable sunloungers to the huge beach. Lovely uncomplicated beach. Not too busy
Zebhammer — Google review
We actually came here to watch the sunset. It’s such a calm and pretty place to watch the sunset if you’re visiting Algarve and if you’re near the area of Quinta do Lago. I think it’s worth the stop. It’s a very well maintained place too.
JSS — Google review
Really nice stretch of sandy beach. There is plenty of parking available just before the walkway leading across to the beach itself. It was €2.40 for two hours (pay at the machine upon your return). The sea here was good to swim in. Not that cold (though it was end of August) and very little on the seafloor. It also shelved very gradually so even after swimming out for a few minutes, an adult could still touch the bottom. The beach wasn't that busy when we were there. Certainly less crowded than other beaches we'd been to in this area. There was a cafe here but couldn't see any other facilities. Lifeguards were keeping an eye out too when we visited. Definitely recommend a visit.

Ludo Trail, also known as Caminho do Ludo Sao Lourenco Salinas, is a popular hiking trail in the Algarve region of Portugal. Situated within Ria Formosa National Park, it provides an opportunity to explore the unique wetlands and small sandbanks of the area. The trail is a loop that can be divided into three legs, each offering different experiences such as bird watching and salt flats exploration.
Beautiful trail. There are some sections with “private property” signs near the salt pools but locals ignore them, so just go along with the trail. The flamingos are usually at the salt pools, according to a local guide. Was fortunate enough to spot 4 of them from afar :)

Great trail through the salt marshes of Faro. Easy access from the city center, plenty of free parking at the trail head, lots of birds to spot. Sometimes confusing when it is private property and public access but follow the locals and don't cross fences and you'll be alright.
Mark V — Google review
We rented bikes and rode from the downtown of Faro out to the end of Ludo Trail There was a fair amount of variety for scenery, including a lot of birdlife. We took the bridge out to the island as a pleasant detour. Highly recommended, although there are not a lot of services along the way, including restrooms. Bring what you need, which should include plenty of water and sun protection
Mark W — Google review
I absolutely loved this walk although I struggled to figure out where it started, and it went! After a bit of research, we figured it out. We started at a large car park just across the bridge from the airport. We walked for around 2 miles along the beach towards the west. Then we stopped for lunch at Gigi's and a drink. From here, we crossed the bridge and picked up the boardwalk back towards the start. There's some really interesting birds to see as well as lots of crabs! It's a really peaceful walk. Just watch out for all the bikes! Lastly, we crossed back over the main road bridge back to the carpark. Our whole walk was around 6 miles. In the end, we got an ice cream and watched the sunset over the beach.
Hannah W — Google review
The Ludo trail and surrounding area is absolutely stunning. We walked for miles and miles spotting loads of birds and wildlife. As others say, avoid any areas that say “private property” and follow the locals, it’s pretty easy to work out where you can/can’t go. One minor note is it’s no longer a true loop as some of the original trail across the salt flats now appears to be private property that you can no longer access. We came here twice on our holiday and absolutely would come back for more. Beautiful part of the world ❤️
Adele P — Google review

A MUST visit. The boardwalk makes it easy to get around and the view is amazing. Good experience birdwatching as well! (saw the famous flamingoes)
Renu C — Google review
Map over Ludo Trail The hiking trail is a loop, and it can be divided into 3 legs. * First leg: Ludo Trailhead to bird watching tower by São Lourenço. This part is 2,5 kilometers long. * Second leg: São Lourenço trail to the salt flats. This part is 2 kilometers long. * Third leg: The salt flats back to the Ludo trailhead. This part is 2,5 kilometers long. First leg: Ludo Trailhead to São Lourenço We got dropped off at the trailhead at 10 am. I was so excited to finally start the hike ..because it had been a long morning waiting for the bus that never came (the buses were unfortunately striking that one day we decided to use them). Anyhow. We were here now, and we were ready to enjoy a walk in nature. The first part of the Ludo hike is a complete straight trail, which goes through the wetlands of Ria Formosa. Here we saw sooo many small birds, a ton of fish, and some herons. But I think that my favorite part of this leg was when I saw two big Iberian Magpies (I know nothing about birds, so I obviously looked up the name when I got home). I was very impressed with their distinctive blue color, and I loved how different they were from the magpies Second leg: São Lourenço to the salt flats After walking along the straight, first part of the Ludo Trail, the road splits and leaves you with 3 options. If you go left, you enter the Quinta do Lago Boardwalk, if you go straight you walk towards a road full of golf resorts, and if you go right you follow the São Lourenço trail. Go right. The second leg of the trail is the São Lourenço walking path, which have a golf resort on the left and the wetlands on the right. This part of the hike is completely different than the first part. Here we saw a Hoopoe (which Glenn managed to get a great shot of! – Look at the pictures below), we also saw 2 turtles in the lake of the golf resort, and we even spotted a snake in the small forest by the wetlands. I was so excited to see a snake because it happens so rarely! If you’re lucky, then you can also find hedgehogs and chameleons in this part of the track. Although, for obvious reasons you might need to look for a long time in order to spot a chameleon. Third leg: Salt flats back to Ludo Trailhead When you’re almost at the end of the São Lourenço trail, you’ll see a small road leading right. Take this road because it’ll lead you straight to the salt flats. In this part of the trail, we saw mountains of salt. We have no clue who owns the area or what the salt is used for, but it looks really cool. However, the best thing about this part of the trail is all the flamingos! Yup – there are flamingos in Faro. So cool! Unfortunately, we don’t have a big camera lens to capture the birds from afar, but Glenn did his best with what he had. So beneath is a picture of a bunch of faraway flamingos in the middle of the salt flats. After spending a long time doing some flamingo-spotting, we wrapped up the walk. We followed the road back down towards the first part of the trail, which would lead us right back to the trailhead. All in all, a pretty amazing wildlife experience in Portugal! Who knew that so close to Faro, you can find so many animals?

Church São Francisco, part of the monastery, has a history dating back to 1679 and underwent expansions in the following centuries. Its striking white facade hides a Baroque interior adorned with exquisite woodwork and hand-painted tiles depicting the life of São Francisco on its vaulted ceiling. The cobalt blue tiles inside were painted by master Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes between 1720-1730 and are truly spectacular.

Brilliant afternoon on the bird watching boat trip with my son and his family (6 of us) with some other tourists. Guide was very informative and pointed out a variety of birds we don't see in the UK such as storks and spoonbills. Stars of the journey however were the pair of kingfishers which flashed passed us on several occasions. Also spectacular was the views of Faro from the water.

I booked an eco-friendly sunset tour with a solar boat with this company. It was very easy and I really loved the tour. Also the tour guide was very friendly. The pictures are without any filter so the view was really stunning.

We really enjoyed the eco tour, at low tide in a solar powered boat, which was so quiet it didn't disturb the wildlife. We saw many species of birds and crabs, and our guide was very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful

We had a lovely tour with Luis. He was very informative and funny. Even though we didn't book the bird watching tour, we still got some binoculars and watched the birds while Luis shared some information about them. We drove an electrical boat so it was very quiet and we got the chance to come very close to the birds and crabs. Our tour started at 10 am, so we saw a lot of the famous Ria Formosa as there was low tide. Overall we had a lovely and peaceful experience and would like to thank Luis for that.

My parents and I enjoyed our trip on the solar boat so much, it was in fact the highlight of our visit to Faro on Monday! The skippers were so friendly and informative and the peace, relaxation and tranquility on a boat like this is incomparable to any other! Also with the size you can go through channels and feel closer to nature. A wonderful experience which exceeded our expectations. Highly recommended! Thank you! :)

So-so feeling. Very expensive for what it’s worth : when you rent a double kayak you pay as is you rented 2 singles. Total 120€ for 3 adults on 2 kayaks with a navigation map as only guide. The salesperson is kind of cold and you don’t realy feel the passion with pseudo nature wise business. I felt i was rather a wallet. The sailing is worth it though quitte difficult. Not anybody would reach the mid range beach and get back on time. It’s an interesting shallow waters paddling…but knowing what i know now, i would keep my 120€.

Excellent solar powered boat trip to the Ria Formosa. We really enjoyed see all the birds and our guide, Francisco was very knowledgeable about the lagoon and the different species of birds. With his help we were able to identity a number of different wadders and also the highlight of the tour was seeing three Ospreys. I throughly recommend going on one of these boat trips.

Farol as well as other sandy beaches such as Culatra and Armona are easily reachable by ferry. Farol particularly struck me with its tranquility and pristine beauty. Here, everything flows slowly and you have the feeling of being in a place out of time. The small hidden coves are a real spectacle, with crystal clear water that invites you to take a very refreshing dip. The typical local houses, colorful and picturesque, add a touch of charm to the landscape. If you are looking for a place to relax, immerse yourself in natural beauty and get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, this island is the perfect choice. Barreta Island, also known as Ilha Deserta, is a secluded 7km-long island located in the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Accessible by ferry or boat, it boasts a pristine nude beach and serves as a haven for migrating birds like spoonbills from September to November. The Santa Maria boardwalk offers a 2 km trail with stunning views of the ocean and the island's arid interior.
Desert Island is 45 min away from Faro with Katamaran or 15-20min with speed boat from Faro city, it’s very nice ride to island and when you arrive there are some stairs you need to take from the boat. It took as around 3 h to walk around the whole island and you have lovely views to see Atlantic Ocean, you will find amazing, huge seashells, nice pebbles, sea stars and many more interesting things. The water was clean and clear with a lovely beach to swim in, just need to be careful with powerful waves. After nice walk and swim you can visit the only restaurant in the island and the food there is amazing and fresh. There is also stunning view next to the lighthouse.
Indy R — Google review
Such a nice location. Visited for an afternoon and was lovely. Its slightly cooler than inland Faro which was nice. Not a cloud in the sky and the sea is crystal clear. Only costs €5 to get over on a 45 min boat ride. Would definitely recommend!
Josh P — Google review
The Barreta island, or Ihla Deserta, is a must see if you are in Faro. We visited in December, but the weather was still great for sunbathing and a swim. You can hike around the island, and stop any time for a swim or to enjoy the view. We got there using the ferry, which was 10€ with return for a 45' journey each way. We found that the side of the island where the ferry left us had better places to swim, as the water was calm, while it was pretty wavy & windy on the other side of the island. As the island is deserted, there is only one restaurant there, which can be pricey if you want to dine in, but we used their take away service and the sandwiches were reasonably priced and tasty.
Effie P — Google review
Wonderful, peaceful island. We were there off season. So not many people there a we could enjoy it more. I think, during the season it's a wonderful place for the lazy type of vacation. Just enjoy the sun on the beach
Pavol K — Google review
Lovely isolated beach to visit if you are looking to relax somewhere with few people. You can take the ferry from Faro that costs 5 euros and it takes around 45 mins to arrive or there is a faster option with shuttle that takes 15 minutes and it costs 10 euros. There is one restaurant at the island but it expensive so I would recommend to bring food if you don’t want to spend more money on food. There is an option to rent an umbrella with two chairs that costs 20 euros for the whole day. I think if you are planning to go 3-4 hours is enough to spend on the island! Beautiful views, the sand is so soft but the water cold!
Ioannis V — Google review

The Roman Ruins of Milreu, located near Estoi in the Algarve, offer a fascinating glimpse into ancient Roman life. This archeological site features the well-preserved remains of a prominent Roman villa, complete with intricate mosaics, baths, and a temple dating back to the 1st century. Over time, the villa saw various transformations and was eventually repurposed as a Christian church before falling into decay during the Arabic takeover.
Great little site with a lot to see and superb mosaics... unprotected from the elements. Impressive remains of the temple still stand high, not your typical excavation site. And all of that for only 2 euros is a real bargain and well worth the visit.
Mark V — Google review
This was a Roman village for the privileged I would say, baths, houses, cook house & place of worship, but very interesting and good stories along with the sites. It is not a big site, but it keeps you amused on how they lived 2000 years ago. 2 euros for entry (cheap), you need transport to get there, car or motorbike.
Smithy — Google review
Parts of these roman ruins are amazingly preserved. Its mostly the tile work that is impressive. There are signs thru out either drawing that give a good visual of how it might have looked in its prim. Its fun to walk around, not too much of it is blocked off. Very reasonable price. Free parking right outside. I was able to purchase my ticket online. I would overall recommend.
Toni S — Google review
The Roman ruins of Milreu are a fascinating window into life nearly two thousand years ago. This villa complex still shows traces of mosaics, baths, and farm buildings that reveal the wealth and reach of Roman Algarve. A small on-site museum helps piece the story together. Well worth a stop if you’re exploring the region.

Interesting experience with air conditioning which was great for hot days! A unique way to see the history of Faro. It's not the cheapest activity for the length of time it takes (about 30mins). Only issue we had was the speaker wasn't on for the second room so had to find staff to sort.

Great way to learn about the history of Faro. It’s the only place I actually learned everything I wanted to know. The only disappointment was the tasting. You basically pay 9 euros for a single piece of bread and a bit of olive oil and a drink. I expected more.

I loved it! Very informative and didactic exposition! I totally recommend it! You get to learn about the Faro in a very fun way! Would recommend as well for families to go there :) The exposition goes every 30 minutes, so if you need to wait, you can either go visit the cathedral or sit outside, and after the exposition you can taste typical foods and drinks. The staff is extremely nice and helpful. Francisco and Zu were very welcoming and kind. Outside there is a cafe (separate services from Faro Story Spot) Thank you and I hope I will be back soon!
