St Albans Cathedral, a landmark Norman cathedral, is a must-visit in St Albans and one of its most popular tourist attractions. It offers free daily tours and the opportunity to climb the tower. With over 1700 years of history, it is the oldest continuous site of Christian worship in Britain. The cathedral features stunning stained glass windows and boasts the longest nave in the country.
Beautiful on the outside and inside, very historic and a place a calm reflection to wander round. Free entry but lots of places where you can donate via tapping your card. Very friendly staff inside who recommended the parts of the cathedral to make sure we didn’t miss!

I live in London, and visiting this city and this cathedral was one of the most beautiful experiences I had over the weekend. It was truly enjoyable. St Albans Cathedral is absolutely stunning — it feels like every wall and door has a story to tell, as if they’ve witnessed countless events over the centuries. The atmosphere is peaceful yet powerful, and walking through the cathedral felt like stepping into history. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves architecture, history, or simply beautiful places.
Bab M — Google review
A magnificent architectural with loads of history and story. We visited in a weekday thus not crowded at all. You will be embraced by a deep sense of peace and afford to slow down to appreciate the view around you. Worth a visit together with the town.
Lydia C — Google review
The sheer scale of St Albans Cathedral, a structure of profound history and weight, provided the perfect canvas for the Poppy Fields light installation by Luxmuralis last night. It was more than an event; it was a deeply moving, sensory experience designed for quiet contemplation and remembrance. The massive, soaring architecture of the Nave, usually bathed in the soft glow of natural light or high electric lamps, was utterly transformed by darkness and vibrant digital projection.
Kris M — Google review
This an absolutely stunning building dating originally from the Norman period but with additions over the centuries. The place was a pilgrimage site long before the Norman's arrived and the tomb of St Alban is still a pilgrimage site today. The cathedral possesses the longest nave of any cathedral in Britain and there are a number of medieval frescoes still visible; fascinating even if somewhat faded.
Bernard S — Google review
Being there you imagine that the place is nearly 1000!!!!! Years old. Some buildings were built from the Romans bricks. It is the oldest and one of the most significant church in England. This church saw everything. Besides that, town is beautiful, going there you should have enough time. It is hard to find the parking lot.
DNK — Google review
Absolutely enjoyed my visit. A stunning place that showcases its long history through a mix of architectural styles. I just loved every single detail, from the floor and columns to the ceiling.
Erin Y — Google review
Enjoyed our visit there. They have a free guided tour of the cathedral which runs for about an hour; I strongly recommend it. The entry is free too!

Immerse yourself in the ancient world at Verulamium Museum, located within the picturesque Verulamium Park. This educational museum offers a unique glimpse into Roman life with recreated rooms, interactive displays, and a fascinating array of artifacts including gold Roman coins. The site, built on one of the largest Roman settlements in Britain, provides guided talks and large-scale mosaics for an immersive experience.
We were in St Albans for a few days. I didn't know what to expect as it's so close to London, a place I cannot abide. But it was SO beautiful. Very quaint and very English. The cathedral is wonderful with medieval wallpaintings still intact and two saints shrines. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. But the big surprise was the roman remains. In the middle of the park below the cathedral, in a small building, is a beautiful roman mosaic. Then we found the museum. Here are some fabulous mosaics, plasterwork and all sorts of other finds from the old roman town of Verulamium. I was particularly taken with the contents of a carpenters workshop. The hand tools were not dissimilar to those used today. Back outside, we found considerable lengths of the old roman walls. What a wonderful place.
Jon S — Google review
A fascinating collection of Roman artefacts from the ancient city of Verulamium the ruins of which are located beneath modern Saint Albans. Also worth visiting is the preserved hypocaust ("hot air central heating channels") from a Roman Villa located across the park a short distance from the museum and also visit the amazing Roman theatre across the road from the nearby church.
Derek W — Google review
Well maintained and a huge park with a play area, garden, golf course and cycling trails. The walking trails near the pond has to be looked in to as they were messed by duck poop. It has ample car parking but they do charge for it. It’s a great place for a family picnic or to hang around with family and friends.

Having been to Rome, Pompeii, and Pergamum among other places from Roman history this little museum is one of the best to be found. Spectacular mosaics and wall paintings. And more to visit outside in the surrounding park.

Verulamium Museum – St Albans I absolutely loved my visit to Verulamium Museum—an enchanting window into Roman Britain nestled right beside Verulamium Park. The museum is compact yet rich in treasures, offering a wonderfully immersive experience without ever feeling overwhelming . 🔍 Highlights Spectacular mosaics: The museum displays some of the finest Roman mosaics outside the Mediterranean—each intricate design beautifully preserved . Fascinating artefacts: From the glittering Sandridge Hoard of gold coins to the eerie lead coffin of "Postumus," every exhibit tells a compelling historical story . Recreated Roman rooms: Stepping into these reconstructed spaces, complete with authentic frescoes and domestic scenes, felt like travelling back in time . Interactive & family-friendly: Artefact handling, explorer trails, touchscreen elements, dress-up and children’s activities make it engaging for all ages . 👍 What stood out Exceptional presentation: Thoughtful layout with clear audio-visual aids that bring history to life . Stellar reputation: A Tripadvisor Traveller's Choice award winner and recipient of a top education award—credible recognition of its quality . Perfect-sized visit: You can enjoy a rich experience in just 1–2 hours, ideal for relaxed or family-friendly visits . 🌳 Plus More to Explore Right outside, Verulamium Park beckons with its Roman hypocaust, theatre, city walls and green trails—a great extension to your museum trip . --- Overall: A thoroughly delightful and informative experience—compact, captivating, and accessible. Highly recommended for history lovers, families, or anyone curious about everyday life in ancient Roman Britain. 👍 Rating: 5/5 — A hidden gem in St Albans that I’d happily revisit!

Aug25- History on Your Doorstep talk on Roman Verulanium, women and Boudicca. Fascinating lecture /visual screening work by a history/archeology graduand, Niamh. The Sr colleague too was so knowledgeable. Thoroughly enjoyed and got to walk round the museum after. Loses a star for the lack of parking necessitating several drives round waiting it hoping someone was leaving.
D Y — Google review
An excellent little museum with loads to offer. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and learned a lot about this historically significant partner the world. A rich variety of archaeology is on display, with lots of supporting information. Entry prices are reasonable, with a discount if you live locally. The museum is wheelchair accessible and has accessible toilet facilities. Staff are friendly and helpful.
Jonathan C — Google review
We thought it was great, cost £10, if like us you like anything Roman, didn't think it was a place for kids as they would get bored very easily. If you are early there is FREE parking at King Harry lane, basically behind the hypocaust. The Roman theatre costs an extra £3

Park
Nature & Parks
Verulamium Park is a 100-acre green space in St Albans, named after the Roman settlement it was built on. The park features a lake with various waterfowl, a playground for children, benches for relaxation, and sports facilities including tennis courts and an outdoor fitness area. It also houses ruins of ancient city walls and serves as a film set for the musical fantasy 'Wonka.'
It's a beautiful, extremely large park!! Verulamium Park is lovely for dog walks, taking the kids to the park, or even just nice to sit and have a picnic. People of all ages can come here. Some footpaths are underwater depending on the time of the year. The public toilets may possibly become flooded too, as it's very close to the lake. There are lots of nature and plenty of wildlife on the lakes. There is a coffee shop that sells hot and cold drinks, ice cream, doggie ice cream and treats, with some hot and cold food to eat. There's a museum at the edge of the park that has a lot of history of the area, which is nice. There is the oldest pub situated just outside the park which is an easy walk to get to (ye olde fighting cocks). It is all wheelchair accessible and has alot of pay and display parking on site.
Annalise M — Google review
A delightful park for walks. However, I gave it four stars because some footpaths are underwater so we can't use them. Overall, it is one of my favourite parks in St Albans. Pictures are from the summer and winter times.
Nonhlie E — Google review
Verulamium Park in St Albans is a delightful 100‑acre haven that effortlessly blends rich Roman heritage with modern leisure— from walking alongside ancient city walls and a hypocaust mosaic to watching swans glide across the ornamental lake . The park offers something for everyone: a thoughtfully themed modern playground, seasonal splash park, crazy golf, and outdoor gym for active fun . With well-maintained paths, picnic spots, and wildlife aplenty, it’s a serene escape or a vibrant family day out. While parking can be tight at peak times, the charm, history, and space on offer make it a top spot in the city—truly the perfect blend of nature, culture, and community. Highly recommended for all ages!

Calm, tranquil park in Saint Albans. Nice getaway. Museum on one end. Roman wall along one path. Playground. Lots of large green spaces and a small lake.
Eric S — Google review
Huge park. Lots of space to explore and decent water feature. Enjoyed visiting. Seemed quite popular and busy with tourists.
Tom D — Google review
Verulamium Park in St Albans is a lovely mix of open green spaces, rich Roman history, and fun activities for all ages. You can stroll by the peaceful lake, explore ancient ruins like the Roman wall and mosaic floor, or enjoy the children’s playground and splash park. It is a great spot for families, picnics, and relaxed afternoons surrounded by nature and heritage.
Rudrosekhor C — Google review
Verulamium Park is great relaxing by water, we went there and unfortunately no more water fountains. At one end the water is filthy and smelly. Great spaces for picnic and a pint at ye olde fighting cocks one of the oldest pubs at the far corner of the park.
Paul H — Google review
A really beautiful and spacious park with plenty of greenery. The place is full of birds, and fish in the lake, making it a peaceful spot to relax. There’s a children’s playground near a café, but it isn’t free. According to Google, there’s also a free playground somewhere in the park, but I didn’t get a chance to explore the whole area to find it.

St Albans Museum + Gallery, run by charity Ask for Clive and supported by sponsors like St Albans BID, offers a variety of activities and events. The museum will be illuminated in Pride colors, and there will be special Pride-themed activities across the city. Additionally, the impressive St Albans Cathedral hosts special events throughout the year, including an art installation featuring 10,000 paper doves.
Enjoyed our visit to the museum. The old courtroom is now used as a cafe retaining a lot of it's original features. You can visit the old cells below the courtroom, some have been converted into toilets! There is also rooms covering the history of the police force and the history of the building and it's use. Part of the museum was dedicated to pictures of local homeless people with some stunning photos. The cafe has some really nice snacks and drinks. This is free to enter with donation boxes inside, if you are visiting and wandering the shops and market make the effort to pop in and look around. There's carparks all around but parking is expensive starting at £2.10 for the first hour.
Nicholas T — Google review
A pleasant surprise to find a cafe in this museum where you can have a coffee or simple meal inside a court room. Don’t miss the chance to visit the jail underground where you can experience narrow passages to the jail rooms and the super small toilets.
Villia H — Google review
Very unadvertised place the old court is now a coffee shops you can sit in the dock and sip tea. The holding cells are open to the pubic too. The upstairs room with there high ceilings and large windows make for a good exhibition space. The basement had an exhibition about St.Albans Art school which was fun to see and read about all the people involved.

The St Albans Museum + Gallery is a fantastic free spot to visit and a real gem in the heart of the city. Housed in the old courthouse, it’s packed with character and history, making it an interesting and fun experience for all ages. As soon as you step in, you’ll find a lovely café on the right, serving great coffee, cakes, and light meals. The best part? You can take your food straight into the old courtroom ahead and enjoy it in this wonderfully preserved historic space. Sitting where justice once happened makes for a unique dining experience! Make sure to head downstairs to the old jail cells, Exploring the original cells and even the quirky toilet cells adds a real sense of the past. The museum also hosts a changing set of displays that keep things fresh and interesting, so there’s always something new to see. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, it’s a great way to spend a few hours without spending a penny. Definitely worth a visit!
K M — Google review
Really happy to enjoy a coffee in a old courtroom, definitely a unique and unusual experience. I had a great time here. Big thanks to those who’ve kept the place so well and opened it to the public. The museum has loads of Pre-Roman and Roman artefacts as well, which was super interesting, and the shop has some really nice quality items too.

The Roman Theatre of Verulamium, built around 140 AD, is a unique historical site located in a serene countryside setting. Unlike typical amphitheaters, this theater features a central stage and was used for various events including religious festivals, armed combat, and wild animal shows. The ruins were discovered in the mid-19th century and subsequent excavations revealed additional structures dating back to the First Century. Adjacent to the Verulamium Museum and St.
Great if you love anything Roman, The Roman Theatre is an excavated site within the Roman walled city of Verulamium. Although there are other Roman theatres in Britain for example at Camulodunum, the one at Verulamium is claimed to be the only example of its kind, being a theatre with a stage rather than an amphitheatre. There are some other remains and an underground shrine to see, £3 per adult entrance. It is sometimes used for theatrical performances, but you would have to visit their website for more information.
Pete H — Google review
This place is a must when you’re in St Albans, and at a mere £3, it’s well worth it. The theatre dates to around 140AD and is very well preserved. They still put on performances here, and while I wasn’t able to see one, I bet it’s an extraordinary experience. In addition to the theatre, there are also the remains of a row of shops, a villa, and a shrine, so be sure to check those out while you’re here.

Great evening seeing .. A Funny thing happened on the way to the Forum … very funny and great actors .. it was a musical and the singing was really excellent. Great Production … Took a little blanket for our legs as around 9 pm got a little chilly , two musicians playing the music , exceeded my expectations and great to see a live outdoor comedy play .. park in the museum across the road as no parking there . Well done the players !! There is a bar area and another small cabin in the arena area selling drinks , crisps , ice cream .. all beautifully lit with bulbs around the top if the arena and seating for pre show picnics / drinks . Really lovely atmosphere and much improved surroundings since I last went a few years ago .
Sue P — Google review
We went there to see a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, with a bit of a difference - it was set in a 1970s working men's club. It sounds odd, but it worked, and the place has an amazing atmosphere, particularly on a warm summer's evening as the sun is going down. If you can see one of the summer shows, do it. If not, go for a look around anyway.
Gary B — Google review
Not been here in a long while and so glad that I did, thanks to the kindness of strangers. There's lots to see and take in, but take cash just in case as you may need it, depending on technology. There's a few shows being held there in the summer that I'd personally like to attend. It'd be an iconic venue to say the least. The staff are lovely there. It's off the beaten track from St Albans itself so to speak, but not by that much. Definitely visit. You shan't regret it.
Darren G — Google review
This is a wonderful historic place, the setting is so quiet and peaceful and the views of the fields surrounding are lovely. It is so clean and tidy and a good fair price to enter here. At some points you are able to get up close to the ruins , the rocks and stones used in constructing this wonderful building. There are benches around this place so you can sit and relax, It takes you back to a different time than we know today and makes you think about how life really was then. There is still some new discoveries here which i never knew about and they are still working of different parts of this site including having just unearthed a row of shops which i found wonderful to see. There is also a underground shrine that looks lovely but you can't go down there just can look from the top. Really enjoyed this visit and made a great day out in St Albans.
ONwoods U — Google review
A true historical landmark. It is a very different and overwhelming feeling to stand at this site and imagine and visualise history! Romans were ahead of their time and it shows in these excavations. Kudos to everyone working hard to maintain this site. There is an entry fee but totally justified I would say!

Farmers' market
St Albans Market, located in the heart of St Albans on St Peters Street, is a bustling attraction that draws locals and visitors alike. Open on Wednesdays and Saturdays, the market boasts an array of stalls offering everything from fresh produce to crafts and antiques. Additionally, on the second Sunday of each month, a farmers market sets up shop for those interested in locally sourced meats, cheeses, fruits, and vegetables.
You can find fresh produce, flowers and other amazing deals at St Alban’s market. I got these flower bouquets for £5 each from one of the stalls. Travelled down from London (40 min drive from the West) and will recommend other Londoners come here on Saturdays.
Google U — Google review
A good selection of stalls from craft and materials, several plant stalls, and fruit and vegetables stalls to clothing. I went on a Wednesday but apparently more stalls on a Saturday but much busier.
Janet N — Google review
St Albans Market is great you need to go. Many different stalls and a variety of well priced interesting items. There is also plenty of parking and many places to eat and drink very enjoyable.
John M — Google review
It is always lovely to visit St. Albans Market. They have more stalls on Saturday than Wednesday but both days will allow you to enjoy a nice market atmosphere. You can stroll around and get some food then walk to a nearby park to enjoy it while watching some 🐦 living their daily live. I had some paella 🥘 last Saturday. Also got a sourdough from the lovely Brown Bread shop. And lastly a pack of strawberry 🍓 from one of the fruit stalls. If you are around St. Albans for a short visit or a long stay, you may want to match your traveling day with the market days.
L L — Google review
I loved the market, each stall is set out with plenty of room to manoeuvre around. I saw lots of people with pushchairs and wheelchairs, they had plenty of room to look at each stall and move around. Lots of variety with the stall holders, who were all lovely and very friendly. The market was very clean even around the stalls selling food. The stall holders take responsibility and look after the market and one another. Stalls from food , crochet, clothing, foam, materials, picture framing ect. We came across a lovely lady selling honey from Hungary , you got to taste all the honey flavours and she explained the benefits of each one. The market needs to keep going, it's open every Wednesday and Saturday.
Natalie — Google review
The market is steeped in history with a special Royal Charter granted in 1553. However, the market is well documented as far back as the 9th century. The current day market is firmly established in the city centre and runs the length of St Peters Street and Market Place. From August 2020 the market has extended its footprint to allow for as many traders as possible to have a stall while allowing for the necessary social distancing measures. Just approaching Christmas 2020 only essential stalls are allowed; including a butcher, cheese monger, bakery goods, takeaway food and lots of fresh fruit & vegetables.
David S — Google review
With hundreds of years of heritage sat in the heart of Hertfordshire St Albans charter market is jewel in the crown. Generations of families have worked on stalls forging relationships with other traders and the customers they call friends. Running the length of the busy high street every Wednesday and Saturday are a variety of stalls each offering a service or selling products that are truly unique. From the street food vendors to clothes, from candles to art, from hats to toys and every imaginable product you can think of. Each is lovingly made or sourced, unpacked and displayed ready for you to purchase. Many items are made in Britain. Buying from the market means that you are generally buying from a small business which is great! It means you are helping a family to eat! You are investing in a person that cares! It helps the local economy! You will get the best possible service! You can literally come to St Albans and spend the whole day looking around the city and the market. If you have never been to the town before you will come for the atmosphere but stay for the friendships that you will create with the traders.

Ye Olde Fighting Cocks is a charming pub located on the edge of Verulam Park in Abbey Mill Lane, St Albans. It has a warm and inviting atmosphere, offering classic British dishes and a variety of rotating beers. The pub is believed to be the oldest in Britain, with origins dating back to 793AD or possibly the 18th century. Its picturesque exterior resembles a country cottage, while the interior exudes coziness.
Sure! Here’s a polished and heartfelt Google review you can use: ⸻ We recently held our engagement party here and couldn’t be happier with the experience. From start to finish, the service was outstanding. The staff were incredibly helpful, friendly, and went above and beyond to make everything run smoothly. Our waitress always served with a smile and was extremely efficient throughout the evening. The bar staff were just as amazing, even helping to clear our tables before our reservation began. I honestly can’t recommend this place enough – the staff alone make it truly special. Thank you for making our celebration unforgettable!

On a random stroll to Verulamium on a hot Saturday afternoon, we popped in for drinks. The place was buzzing, wonderful to see so many people enjoying themselves here. Despite being so busy, the plentiful bar staff were quick to serve - I was asked about four times if I had been served yet! Fantastic customer service. The drinks were perfect and reasonably priced. Excellent!

Nice enough pub, v busy at the weekend, tends to be popular with overseas tourists as it claims to be the 'oldest pub in the world'. It's not but it's v old. Decent selection of drinks, food is good, staff are generally helpful. Worth a visit and pretty much an authentic old English pub if that's something you want to visit.

Immersive and magical environment! Despite the typical British weather (rain and cold), pub was cozy! Buffalo Chicken wings are a must on anyone’s try list! We had other food and drinks, can’t default ! Polite and friendly staff and welcoming fellow customers. Few car park space, max parking for 2 hours and £5.10 as of 19/10/2025! Nearby views at Verulamium Park is also amazing! Will definitely visit again!

Billed as one of the 6 oldest pubs in England (a framed newspaper article evidences this claim), it is a great spot for a break as you walk in the park between the Cathedral and Roman ruins. Very atmospheric inside. We had dinner one evening and snacks the next day. Large patio outside. Food is above average pub-grub. Service was a little slow as the place was packed both times we visited. Definitely recommend.

As the title suggests, an olde worlde pub set just behind the cathedral in St Albans with a cracking atmosphere. We were a party of seven eating in the afternoon and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. Plenty of choice on the food and drink front and we all left absolutely stuffed so good portions. The pub claims to have housed Oliver Cromwell in it's illustrious past so you can touch a bit of history whilst filling your face. What's not to like 😀

My parents came to visit me from abroad, and I decided to take them to this pub — known as the oldest in Britain — for what I hoped would be a memorable Sunday afternoon (visit on 6/07/2025 around 1:30pm). Unfortunately, the experience turned out to be quite the opposite. Many tables appeared reserved, but we were given one — with a 40-minute limit. Just 10 minutes after ordering drinks, a waitress (a lady with a notebook, seemingly in charge) asked us to vacate the table as they "needed it." We hadn’t even finished half our drinks. I politely explained the situation, and she gave us an extra 10 minutes, which we appreciated — but the damage was done. It was quite an unpleasant and embarrassing experience, especially with guests from abroad. The rushed treatment ruined our afternoon. This place may be a great pub otherwise, but even one staff member's poor handling can spoil a visit. I wouldn’t recommend it if you're planning to bring guests or hoping for a relaxed atmosphere.

Historical landmark
The Roman Mosaic and Hypocaust in Verulamium Park is a must-see for history enthusiasts. The site houses an incredibly well-preserved Roman mosaic, which was once part of a grand Roman townhouse's reception rooms. This intricate mosaic, nearly 2000 years old, showcases the ancient art form in all its glory.
There was a group of schoolchildren here when I arrived. Judging by their running and screaming, the splendor of the mosaic floor was truly driving them wild! Seriously, though, this is incredible. They have signs that provide an excellent history of where you are and what you are seeing, and the walkway around the entire perimeter lets you get a very good look. The walk through the park to get there was also nice. Don’t leave St Albans without stopping here.
Caleb L — Google review
Definitely worth a visit if you like anything Roman, 1800 years old, and looks great, very well looked after, you should visit the museum as well (£10 per adult) as they have more there, and the Roman theatre (£3 per adult) While you're in the Hypocaust you can listen to voices from the Hypocaust's history from mosaic artists to archaeologists, on a wind-up machine.

In short: A Hidden Gem of Roman History in St Albans. During a visit to the park, I was genuinely surprised to discover a unique and exquisite piece of Roman history. Initially, my son noticed what he thought was a large coach beyond the play area, while I mistook the structure for a toilet block. It was a large, grey, and unassuming building, lacking any clear signposts or information, which made it seem unworthy of a visit. However, curiosity got the better of me, as the structure appeared so out of place that I felt compelled to investigate. Imagine my surprise upon discovering that it housed an excavated Roman mosaic, lovingly preserved within its walls! The unexpected discovery was a delight. Upon entering, the atmosphere was eerily quiet and chillingly cold. Accompanied only by my dog, I walked around the platform, reading the informative placards and marveling at the craftsmanship and preservation of the mosaic. It’s a testament to St Albans’ commitment to preserving their rich Roman history. This hidden gem is yet another example of the city's dedication to preserving its historical treasures, and I wish more towns and cities would invest in similar endeavors.

Amazing piece of history, the mosiac flooring remains from a house built approx 1900yrs ago. Free entry

Free Entry An absolutely stunning Roman Mosaic in perfect condition from AD200 (1,821 years ago) discovered in the 1930’s. We visited this after our tour around the Verulamium Museum which is about a 5 min walk across the park. The building itself is very modern.
K M — Google review
I was very surprised to learn you could just walk in to see the mosaic and hypocaust, and it's not got anyone around to ensure it's preserved, so it's good that most people seem to be respectful and keep it clean. The mosaic is incredibly detailed and it's amazing to see something that was built for decorative purposes still around nearly 2000 years after construction.
Atlas — Google review
To get an idea on what the Roman's bought to Britain with their sheer indulgence this amazing floor shows what they did for England. I was surprised that there was no one present at the site considering the importance of this site. I was appalled to see a plastic bottle had been dropped into one of the original vents designed for channeling the hot steam under the floor. There is good access for those with limited walking and to say there aren't toilets present on this small site. Again like the main museum there isn't any scale models to show you what the original building looked like or where the building would have been situated in the town. The nearest to this would be the drawing at the information board outside the building.
Gareth L — Google review
A rather long, hot walk across the park, and unfortunately not much to see when you get there. Thankfully it is free entry. It is a mosaic inside a building that houses it for protection. Strange location, but that's where it is. Directions clear with signposts throughout the park. Some description of it inside.

The Waffle House is a popular eatery located in St Albans, housed in a charming 16th-century watermill with picturesque views of the nearby stream and River Ver. This renowned establishment has been serving up delectable waffles and desserts since the late 1970s, offering an array of sweet and savory options made with organic wholewheat, white, or spelt flours that are stoneground just a few miles away.
Excellent waffles the butter chicken pieces were simply amazing! I also had the banana flapjack waffle which was amazing too. Highly recommend booking in advance as this place is often packed! The coffee was also great, the espresso was prepared very well indeed!

Food was delicious, we had 3 sweet waffles which we thoroughly enjoyed. One member of our party cannot eat gluten so it was great to see that gluten free waffles were available. Service was good and I absolutely love the fact that the building itself is an old water mill. You can still see the inner workings of the water mill inside in a little museum area. My only complaint is the booking system and the queue. I tried to come in the day several times on weekends, could not get parked and found there was a massive queue. There was no option to pre-book a table which seemed absolutely nuts to me, especially when some people are elderly or disabled and cannot stand or walk for long periods of time. Not at all inclusive from this point of view! I did enquire whether it would be possible to pre-book and was told no. I can therefore only assume that for some reason the owners like the massive queue as it could very easily be resolved by introducing either an online or telephone booking system. In the end to avoid the queue I came at 11am on a weekday. However, the difficulty in getting a table without queuing will make it practically difficult for me to come back again in the near future given I work full time Monday-Friday. I'd love to recommend to friends and relatives but don't feel I can on account of the queuing and lack of booking system.

It’s been many years of visiting The Waffle House in St Albans and only this weekend I arrived early enough to catch their breakfast menu, and how amazing was it! We visited this place first in 2016 and loved it to bits. We revisited in 2025 and were still as impressed as we were the first time round. Whilst all offerings we've tried so far have been excellent, their signature garlic butter waffle is a lesson in simplicity. Full marks.

Lovely spot on the river for a spot of breakfast or lunch. Bit of an institution in St Albans and very busy as a result. Be sure to check out specials ahead of time (especially if you’re vegetarian) as although the basic menu has a decent range of options—it is pretty basic. The whipped goats cheese and heritage beetroot (special) was honestly next level though.. I could go there every week just for that.

Lee House, also known as Sopwell Nunnery, is a historic site located just outside St Albans. The ruins of this Tudor mansion sit atop a medieval nunnery that dates back to 1140. It is believed that Anne Boleyn sought refuge at the nunnery and secretly married King Henry VIII there. The visible remains include the gatehouse, an H-shaped structure, a cross-wing, and a kitchen.

The Sopwell Nunnery is one such place where history and nature seamlessly intertwine, allowing visitors to witness history in motion and develop a deeper appreciation for the world we live in today. This spot served as a perfect resting place for my children during our walk, and they delighted in exploring the ruins amidst the trees and shrubs.

Sopwell Nunnery is this is scheduled monument site dating back to the 12th century. This ruins is all that remains of the Tudor mansion known as Lee Hall that was built around 1560 by Sir Richard Lee. Richard Lee built his mansion on top of the medieval nunnery, which itself dated back to 1140. Although, the ruins are still known as Sopwell Nunnery, you only will see Sir Richard's Lee mension ruins there. Still pretty impressive though. The ruins located not far from St Albans city center in Hertfordshire, where we saw lots of interesting characters buildings too! Also, if you are doing Very Valley walk and love historical places, it is worth to visit the ruins too! The place wasn't very crowded on our visit, so we have managed to take great shots. 😊👌 Nice place to have picnic too! We definitely recommend it!

Beautiful. Simply beautiful. I found several tiny mammals running past me in the more overgrown parts of the ruins towards the back. If you go through the ruins, and turn left, then follow the path through the walled entrance there is a lovely nature reserve and a bridge just behind it. Follow the trail over the very long bridge and it will take you to a narrow greenery alleyway. Follow that, and you will come out near the River Ver. Very pretty route to take if you have dogs or older children with you.

Such nice people here. I was made up feel very welcome when I visited as a stranger. They were even kind to my pet who tagged along and asked no questions. I really appreciated this. If anyone could win the most like Jesus behaviour of love and kindness without prejudice or question, it would be here. I would have been open and explained why I must bring my pet along, but it meant more then I can ever Express to just be accepted in without questions or nosiness. It’s the first time my privacy has been respected in my travels. We attended one of the Easter week services and it was the best I’ve ever been to. Not because of any profound sermons or productions, but because of the smiles to a stranger, the love shown to my animal, the silence of so many people for 45 minutes total silence. People outside in the world make some much noise and want to be heard. But here was the kind of place I need. Silence with nonverbal communication via kind eyes, sweet smiles, childlike glee when meeting my pet, warm welcome to someone who is unknown

Visitors can enjoy daily shows and meet-and-greets with Peter Rabbit and Friends. Additionally, the farm has onsite cafes and restaurants offering a variety of dining options.

Welcoming staff and loads of toilets with disabled access! The children will love it. Lits of tables to eat your picnic. All the rides are free! I definitely recommend this venue for a great day out!

We had such a lovely day at Willows Activity Farm. The kids absolutely loved it — from feeding the animals to bouncing on the giant pillows and running around the Peter Rabbit play areas. There’s just so much for them to do, both indoors and outdoors, that we ended up staying most of the day without even realizing how fast it went by. Everything felt clean, safe, and well-kept, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The food was fine (a bit pricey, as expected at these places), but it didn’t really matter because the kids were having the best time. It’s clear that the place was designed with families in mind — it’s easy to get around with a stroller, there are plenty of toilets and shaded spots, and you never feel rushed. Perfect for young kids who love to explore and play. We’ll definitely be coming back — it’s one of those rare spots where the whole family leaves happy and tired in the best way.

We visited Willows Farm on a Sunday for the Pumpkin Festival, and it was a lovely family day out! The pumpkin patch was beautiful with lots of photo spots, and there was even a pumpkin carving area. Our daughter loved the pumpkin hunt around the farm and was thrilled with her little prize at the end. There’s so much for kids to do — bouncy castle, Peter Rabbit shows, tractor rides, feeding the animals, playgrounds, mini golf, and rides. You can easily spend the whole day there. The only downside for us was the food. We tried one of the food trucks near the pumpkin patch, but it was disappointing and overpriced. The buns were cold, and the burgers tasted like they’d been pre-cooked. We also skipped the hot chocolate after someone in front of us returned theirs. We then went to the indoor canteen, but it was very busy with long queues and packed seating, so we couldn’t get a meal there either. It was a cold day, so a nice warm lunch would’ve made the day even better. Overall, we had a wonderful experience and loved all the activities, but the food options really let it down. We’d happily come again for the fun, but next time we’ll definitely bring our own food!

UNWELCOMING PLACE IF THERE WAS 0 stars I would give. Discriminatary behaviour was demonstrated towards us by staff. Unwelcoming. No understanding towards children. My son who was over 90cm was denied access to areas that he was actually eligible for. Do not waste your money here. Also on weekdays majority areas are shut with one staff working and the shows do not run. I forgot to take photos on the day due to stress caused but attached photos of some closed attractions including “adventure playground” “carasouls” and “playground slides”

We recently spent a memorable day at Willows Activity Farm, and it truly exceeded our expectations! Visiting with two other families with children around 3.5 years old, we all had a fantastic time exploring the farm, especially with the added Halloween decorations and pumpkin patches for the season. Lucky for us, we enjoyed a sunny day—quite a treat for October in England—which made the visit even more enjoyable. Willows Activity Farm is packed with a variety of activities that kept the kids entertained from start to finish. 1.Animal Feeding: The kids were delighted to feed and interact with the farm animals, including goats and sheep. Feed is available to purchase, adding a fun hands-on experience for little ones eager to get close to the animals. 2.Piglet Race: This was one of the biggest hits! The kids loved watching the adorable piglets race around a small track, and the cheering made it all the more exciting. 3.Cow Milking Show: The cow-milking demonstration offers a great mix of entertainment and education, allowing kids to see where milk comes from. The setup is both informative and engaging for young children, making it a lovely learning experience. 4.Tractor Ride: A classic part of any farm visit, the tractor ride was a major highlight for the kids. It took us on a scenic loop around the farm, with plenty of interesting sights along the way. 5. Pumpkin Patch: Since it was Halloween, the pumpkin patches were wonderfully set up, allowing kids to pick their own pumpkins and take photos in a festive setting. Each child got to take home a pumpkin, which was a wonderful bonus! 6.Playgrounds and Inflatable Zone: There are several play areas with age-appropriate equipment for children, including swings, slides, and climbing frames. The inflatable play zone, with its bouncy castles and structures, was a huge hit as well and kept the kids engaged for quite some time. 7.Indoor Play Barn: A well-equipped soft play area inside provides a safe space for kids to play indoors. This is especially handy in case of rainy weather, and it offers a nice change of pace from outdoor activities. The farm’s facilities are excellent, which made it a stress-free day for all of us: • Food and Refreshments: With a food truck, café, and coffee shop, there are plenty of options for snacks and meals. The food is reasonably priced and family-friendly, making it easy to grab a quick bite or a refreshing drink throughout the day. • Clean Toilets: We were particularly impressed with the cleanliness of the toilets. They’re well-placed around the farm, so you’re never too far from one, and each was well-stocked and maintained, which is a real plus when visiting with young children. Ticket prices typically range from £20–£25 per person, with discounts available for online bookings. Special events, like Halloween, may impact ticket prices slightly, so checking the website for updated details is a good idea. Though it might seem a bit pricey at first glance, we felt that the wide range of activities and overall experience provided excellent value for money. The day felt like it was packed with entertainment and well worth every penny. Final Thoughts Willows Activity Farm is an outstanding destination for families with young children. The staff is friendly and attentive, the facilities are clean and convenient, and the range of activities offers something for every family member. The Halloween decorations added an extra layer of magic, and we’re already looking forward to visiting again for another seasonal event. In summary, Willows Activity Farm offers a wholesome, fun-filled day out that combines the charm of farm life with plenty of adventure and entertainment. Whether you’re local or coming from farther away, it’s well worth a visit for a day that’s sure to leave everyone smiling. We left with happy kids, a bundle of pumpkins, and wonderful memories. Highly recommended for any family looking for a special day out

It used to be operated by it's enthusiastic owner and there was a large selection of puddings, but now it's basically down to two - a cookie with ice cream or sticky toffee. The restaurant is looking a bit tired and so is the concept. It used to be a great alternative to pudding at the restaurant but now I don't think I'll bother as we ended up being surrounded by school kids who I assume we're kicked out of a nearby milkshake bar. A bit of a come down from The Ivy or Cote.

The Pudding Shop is a lovely little shop for stopping for a dessert and drink, friendly staff and nice range of delicious looking cakes. We had a range of dessert and all were lovely. I found the chairs a little small for comfort but fine for a short visit.

I went in on Saturday at lunch and it was a great experience! The people there were lovely, especially the person who served me at the till and then gave me my food! She was kind and efficient gave me great recommendations. Someone so positive and knowledgeable and I found out she’s only 17! Great experience and food and I’ll definitely be coming again.

I wanted to say thank you to the manager for giving my friend and I some freebies when the baked cookie dough we ordered was out of stock. Such a lovely and kind gesture, really made our evening. Thank you again!

The St Albans Organ Theatre is an intimate venue that features a collection of self-playing mechanical musical instruments. The museum is mostly from the 1930s and 1950s, and it's a hidden gem in St Albans. The museum offers amazing afternoon tea and a demonstration of some of the wonderful old Wurlitzers among others. This is definitely worth a visit!
Had a lovely afternoon at the Mechanical Instrument Christmas Special at the theatre.🌲

Always a welcoming place to visit. I was there recently for an AGM for MOOS & the volunteer staff couldn't have been more helpful. For those who've never been before, if you like mechanical music, you're in for a treat!

A real hidden gem. Run by volunteers who have an incredible knowledge. Open on a Saturday (for an organ concert on the Wurlitzer) and a Sunday (for a tour of the instruments to hear them all) once a month. But really suitable for children but great for adults.
John A — Google review
A most enjoyable afternoon, but, the talking by the staff in reception, whilst the commentator in the hall was talking, was a distraction. Perhaps the doors to the hall should be closed so they could still have their chat?
John B — Google review
It was an enjoyable concert although I expected classical organ music like Bach's. So I enjoyed the very last music 'Amazing grace' the most. I wish there would have been more church music or classical music. The coffe provided tasted exceptionally good!

Very special place. Not particularly impressive from the outside (think warehouse) but the magic lies within. I attended a Silent Film Concert, showing Messrs Chaplin, Keston, Laurel & Hardy, accompanied on piano by the excellent Keith Nichols. You are surrounded by organ history and memories gone by and there are both rare and familiar pieces. Organ Concerts are monthly, as well as other one-off and seasonal events run to preserve these wonderful pieces. I'll be back!

The Roman Wall of St Albans, dating back to around 250-270 A.D., is a remaining portion of the protective wall that surrounded the city of Verulamium. Located in Verulamium Park, this ancient structure showcases recognizable Roman building techniques. In its prime, the wall spanned over 3km (2 miles), safeguarding the Roman city. Today, only small sections of the wall remain for visitors to explore.
Ancient wall remains. The area is beutyfull, parks, river, lake ... worth a visit. Close to St Albans cathedral, city centre - walking distance. Parking is a bit difficult to find.
Florin D — Google review
This wall has deteriorated alarmingly over the past few years, it has discoloured to the point where the red brick has become distinguishable from the rest. It has a large bush growing right next to wall, and inside the fenced area is overgrown with grass and leaves, it just comes across as unloved, which I'm sure is not the case!
Adrian P — Google review
Amazing place to take families and learn about the history. Formerly the tribal capital of the native Catuvellauni tribe, Verulamium was conquered by the Romans during their invasion of Britain in 43 AD. By 50 AD, Verulamium had become a major Roman town, and as such was a prime target during the revolt of Boudica in 61 AD, when it was burnt to the ground. From Verulamium Park there is a magnificent view of St Alban’s Cathedral and Abbey Church, constructed in 1077, and said to be located on the site of St Alban’s execution. Things to do playground with swings, climbing frames, trampolines, mini golf, splash park, a cafe, outside gym, volleyball courts. A great day out for the whole family.
N W — Google review
Beautiful parkland near lake. Roman walls, mosaics and museum. Recommended
Kim K — Google review
The Romans got so comfortable in the area that it was actually the Iceni tribe that destroyed the area around 61AD. Subsequent rebuilds and fortifications had to be to do with local BRITISH tribes mostly at war with each other or at war with anyone who accepted the Romans as neighbours. People forget that the Romans left with good reason. We were a rough neighbourhood.

I always look forward to shows here! Drinks prices are very reasonable, as are the ticket prices and the staff are all very friendly and welcoming, this time round the visit was for the rock orchestra and as ever the show was stunning!

Good location Stage was big with ok lighting, too much blue made it hard to see the act. Sound was good but the in house soundmen should have had more brass. Once again the bar couldn't cope with the amount of people attending the gig. Security ushered people out very quickly after the show. Would attend again but unfortunately would expect the same next time

Points of Interest & Landmarks
The Clock Tower in St Albans is a 15th-century belfry with a 19th-century clock and an observation area accessible via 93 steps. It stands as the only surviving medieval town belfry in England, symbolizing the resistance of the people of St Albans against the abbot's power. Visitors can explore its history on guided walking tours, which also include visits to St Albans School, one of the oldest schools globally.
I enjoyed the view from the top after climbing 93 steps. The staircase is very tight so if you're claustrophobic, it may not be ideal for you. But worth giving it a try for the view.
Nonhlie E — Google review
It is worth the stairs for the best view in town, but be aware it is a very narrow spiral staircase.
James D — Google review
We were very lucky to be up the clock tower at an exact hour and I was very impressed. If you like history, if you like to see how things work and how they used to work, you will love this just as much as I did. It's only £2/person and you get to also enjoy the top view from the tower. The way up is narrow and quite steep but so worth it. The two gentlemen volunteering at the entrance were so nice and I will definitely visit again. If you are happy with your experience, at the end you can make a very much appreciated donation towards keeping the tower open for the public. Strongly recommend! 10/10
Ionela O — Google review
The Clock Tower was built between 1403 and 1412, and is believed to have been completed in 1405. It has been claimed to be the only remaining medieval town belfry in England. Its construction has been seen as a protest against the power of the local abbey to regulate time-keeping in the town. The Tower was built close to the site of the Eleanor cross. Twelve Eleanor crosses were constructed throughout eastern England under the orders of King Edward I between 1291 and 1294 in memory of his wife Eleanor of Castile. The site of each cross marks the nightly resting place of Eleanor's funeral procession. Unfortunately, it was shut on the day we visited.
Pete H — Google review
Did an impromptu trip up tower. £2 each. Seemed to be staffed by friendly volunteers. Limited space so they have to moderate the entry . Very narrow staircase - don’t forget to duck!
Dave K — Google review
The clock tower is an impressive landmark that is definitely worth a visit. Its architecture is stunning and the clock itself is a marvel. The tower is located in a bustling area with plenty of shops and restaurants nearby, making it a great spot to spend an afternoon. The view from the top is breathtaking and offers a unique perspective of the city. Overall, I highly recommend checking out the clock tower if you're in the area.
Sir ( — Google review
Lovely views at the top and really interesting history. There are 93 steps that are quite steep and narrow... however you can stop at each floor to read history or to let people pass up/down. The volunteers were very informative and fun, would definitely recommend.
Jess B — Google review

The Boot, located in Sarratt village, is a rustic pub with outdoor seating that offers a variety of real ale, craft beers, and homemade food. This historic establishment dating back to 1420 boasts timber frames and low ceilings, creating a cozy atmosphere for patrons. The pub has received accolades for its excellent food and service, including Sunday roasts available every week. Additionally, it hosts open-mic nights and has become popular among walking groups in the area.
For Cinco de mayo, I searched the three counties for a Mexican restaurant. This was one of the few results. The trip was well worth it. Flavours are very unique and intense, reminiscent of carnival street food. Service was very fast and friendly. Some glitches with requests, but easily resolved Highly recommend booking - tables were all full most of the time. The bar itself is still operational, but very full - despite which, bar service remained very prompt. I would encourage everybody to try this - it feels very authentic. Music was rock/soft metal, so not thematic but suitable for the venue. The Boot has always been a hub for town nightlife, so it is great to see it gaining a new dimension.

We visited The Boot in St Albans yesterday for a few drinks, following a recommendation from the locals. As soon as you step in, you’re welcomed by its classic, medieval pub atmosphere, and it’s clear this is a favorite spot for locals. Prices are very reasonable, and the crowd spans all ages, adding to the pub’s inviting vibe. Everyone we met was polite and friendly, making us feel right at home. The pub is also conveniently located right in front of the famous Clock Tower, making it easy to find. A great spot to soak in the local charm!

Nestled within the bustling St Albans City railway station, the St Albans Signal Box Preservation Trust offers a delightful glimpse into the world of vintage railways. This charming attraction is home to a Grade II listed signal box, originally built in 1892 by the Midland Railway, making it one of the largest preserved signal boxes in existence. Managed by dedicated volunteers, visitors can explore an impressive collection of railway memorabilia including signs and model trains that will surely ignite nostalgia for train enthusiasts and curious travelers alike.
A place worth recommending. The people working here are exceptionally polite and do their work with incredible passion. Admission is free, but it's worth donating. I got there when it was closed and yet I was shown around the entire signal box. You can see a lot of interesting equipment used on the railway in the past, and even move the switches and set the semaphores.
Joanna K — Google review
Fascinating place, to be able to step back in time and see how the trains used to run. My grandchild loved it nearly as much as I did.
Noway J — Google review
A great little gem of a signal box and gardens alongside the railway. The staff there are very friendly and will show you around the working signals that are in the garden. The highlight is a demonstration of signal working from the signal box from a very informative gentleman. Refreshments are mugs of tea and free biscuits and you can keep the mugs for a nominal fee. You can also watch the mainline trains from the garden or from the signal box. A big thankyou to all the staff and including the lady that sold me a DVD of past lines in Hertfordshire. Highly recommended for all ages even adults. Free entrance but do please give donations to the running of this amazing place in St Albans

Been trying to visit for ages now and finally got there today, well worth the wait. Great team of volunteers, very interactive exhibits, something for every one from just sitting in the sun enjoying the garden to jumping on a lever frame or simply chatting with the knowledgeable team about the local rail history The signalling demonstration was one of the more comprehensive and well presented I've seen. Leavesden Country Park, located just a short drive from Watford, is a top-rated park in Hertfordshire. It offers open spaces with walking paths, sports courts and fields, a playground, and a BMX track. The park has received high praise for its family-friendly amenities including two play areas and a cafe offering takeaway drinks, snacks, and pizzas. Visitors can also explore the heritage trail which provides fascinating insights into the park's history.
This is a great place to visit especially if you have younger children. Very peaceful, lots of space and a fantastic history. It is built on an old lunatic asylum (morphed into Leavesden Hospital), a Rolls- Royce engine factory, an aerodrome. Wellington bombers were built here and Mosquitoes used the runway. Loads of fascinating sculptures in the grounds . Nice woodland walk - see how many different birds you can spot & count how many butterflies you see.

Leaveston Park is a beautiful blend of history and nature. The park’s open green spaces and well-kept grounds make it a peaceful escape, while the remnants of the old hospital serve as a gentle reminder of the area’s past. The abundance of wildlife adds charm and character — from birds and squirrels to the occasional fox, there’s always something to spot on a quiet stroll. It’s the perfect spot to unwind, picnic, or simply enjoy the calm surroundings. The wide stretches of grass are ideal for a family BBQ or a relaxed afternoon with friends, and the park’s friendly, community feel makes it even more inviting. Watercress Wildlife Association is a serene 1.2-hectare reserve that was once watercress beds and now serves as a tranquil habitat for birds and insects. The site, located near the River Ver and the Alban Way, offers a peaceful escape from city life. Although relatively small, it's teeming with diverse flora and fauna, making it an ideal spot for birdwatchers and photographers.
Hard to imagine there is such a natural space in the heart of St Albans. Absolutely worth a go. It is not always open to the public, so beware of the opening time. I think it is an excellent place for bird watchers and photographers. There are quite a lot of bird feeders that are close to walk path.

It was a nice place to have a stroll for half an hour or so. We knew it wasn't the right time to see any watercress in December if there is any. Yet, we could imagine how it must've looked like during the time when boxes and boxes of watercress were daily sent to London in the olden days. The current volunteers looking after the place have taken commendable efforts to encourage the nature to thrive in the mashy land.

A truly memorable place to visit. Find a film you like, book a seat (downstairs if you can), and enjoy the experience. This is so far removed from modern mainstream, multiplex cinema experiences that you just have to live it to know.

We had a terrible experience with Odyssey - we could not attend our booking due to factors beyond our control, and despite taking the time to physically visit the cinema earlier in the day, and speak with a member of staff, they were unwilling to compromise their ‘strict no refund’ policy. I was advised to see if any family or friends could take our tickets, or failing that - try to sell them on Facebook Marketplace?! I requested that a gift voucher could be issued, as we still wanted to attend the cinema & experience a showing, but even that reasonable request was refused point-blank. Now our 2 seats will supposedly be left vacant, potentially causing other attendees to this evenings showing to not be able to get in - it’s short sighted, and really poor customer service. Given the lack of compassion on the part of the staff, the cost of our tickets, and overall bad impression, we will not be encouraging anyone to risk their evening attending the Odyssey.

Nestled in the charming heart of St Albans, Books On The Hill is a delightful independent bookshop that radiates warmth and character. This family-run gem features two distinct rooms: the Green Room, showcasing a curated selection of new fiction and first editions in its Curiosity Cabinet, and the Bookroom Red area dedicated to non-fiction, vintage children's books, young adult literature, and unique gifts.
A fantastic place for any book lover. Full of great books and rare editions, with amazing decor, cozy reading rooms upstairs where you can also grab a coffee or hot chocolate. It's like stepping into a fairy tale. I hugely recommend it as a stop if you're a bookaholic and you're visiting St. Albans.

This is probably one of the best library in England! I was attracted by the shop and the whimsical look and I wasn't disappointed. Once you step inside it's like a fairytale! The decor is so cosy and beautiful, you want to stay all day inside. We were hoping to grab a coffee but unfortunately it was closed during our visit (after 4pm). I really want to come back again someday to try it!

Such a lovely place. I was looking for a book, they didn't have it, so they ordered it for me. Picked it up a few days later. Everyone was super helpful, especially Evie. With books going digital or big chains, such as Waterstones, taking over, it is really nice to see an independent bookstore still open. 100% definitely returning to buy another book.

I visited this adorable independent bookshop on Saturday with two of my friends and we had a lovely time browsing and buying more books to add to our TBR towers. It was lovely to look around with a few little sitting areas to flick through the books and have a browse before purchasing. Nextdoor they have a little tea room, which is equally as enchanting as the store. They sell hot drinks, canned soft drinks and the world's best brownies (in my opinion). All of the staff we encountered her plesant and helpful. Highly recommend a visit.

A nice bookshop frequented by book lovers. A two tiered establishment with an eclectic selection of books on offer. Furry friends are welcome inside. There are chairs on both levels utilised for the art of perusal by happy customers.

If you enjoy taking your time, browsing bookshelves in a relaxing environment, then the experience of visiting this lovely independent bookshop should be right up your street. The staff are very welcoming and helpful, knowledgeable and willing to try to source books if you do not find immediately what you are looking for. The service feels very personal and engaging. The true joy is finding little treasures that were unexpected, as I did - be prepared to come away with more than you might have intended (if only a great feeling) and looking forward to a return visit!

Nestled in the heart of St Albans, Vintry Garden is a hidden gem that offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. This tranquil oasis features numerous benches where visitors can sit back with a coffee and enjoy stunning views of the iconic St Albans Cathedral. With its lush greenery and towering trees providing ample shade during warmer months, this garden invites quiet reflection and relaxation.
Nice garden, not too many flowers in late winter, but must be a good cool place during summers
Manthan R — Google review
The garden has beautiful spots to take pictures of the landscape and cathedral. It's quite busy so I wouldn't go there to enjoy some peace and quiet but maybe read a book or listen to a podcast.
Nonhlie E — Google review
Some reviewers here appear to have mistakenly reviewed the wrong place, judging by the pictures they’ve posted! So to clarify ... this is a walled garden lying in the shadows of St Albans Cathedral - not the walled beer garden of a nearby bar! This garden is part of the cathedral grounds, and back in the 14th Century the monks cultivated this land, turning it into a fruitful vineyard - hence the origin of its name. Ancient oaks and yews looks down on the many benches where you can sit, relax and listen to the wind blowing through their leaves. Mulberry, lavender and rosemary bushes add colour and fragrance to this calming oasis. Despite being so close to the High Street, it feels private and secluded. A Christmas Market occupies this space in winter but, for me, I much prefer it when it’s calm and tranquil.

Lovely green place, Benches, lawns and lots of trees. Good place to eat a packed lunch. Quite well used by people eating sandwiches or meeting friends. And some great views of the Cathedral as well. The space is walled and is a bit hidden away even in the centre of the town.

Lovely food and great staff. My eldest son has allergies, and their policies and understanding of this was excellent. Made us feel at ease to eat. 5 stars!

It's a walked garden and a nice place to sit outside and have an Al fresco lunch. Convenient for St Alban's market with its street food stalls and many and diverse cafés doing takeaways. Take your own camping stool or sit on the grass. It's right next to the Cathedral which has a public access toilet.

St Albans park is a beloved spot for many, offering plenty of open spaces for various activities like dog walking, jogging, and leisurely strolls with family and friends. The park features a beautiful lake, although recent flooding has affected some areas including the toilets. Despite this, visitors can enjoy free parking for up to 2 hours, though finding a space may be challenging at times. Overall, it's considered a beautiful and relaxing park with nearby attractions to explore.
Loved this park... plenty of open spaces for everyone to share.. great for dog walkers, joggers, family and friends walking together to explore and enjoy this wonderful park ... FABULOUS to be outdoors with nature 😀.

The parking area is spacious and convenient, but the entrance curb is quite high, which can be challenging for new drivers and increases the risk of vehicle damage
Loves T — Google review
As long as this is reviewing the parking near the ye olde fighting cocks pub, there are only a handful of spaces and it is £2+ approx for two hours which unless I'm wrong, was the maximum stay. Wouldn't recommend. London Road car park a better bet or Verulamium Park if it's a nice day for a longer walk into town. That said, this short term area was extremely handy for the cathedral and the beautiful older parts of this lovely historic town.
Andy — Google review
It's tricky to drive down to this car park and there are only about 8 paid parking spaces here, which were all full at the time I visited! If there was a space though, it's a great parking location with immediate access to Verulamium Park.

Bit cheesy, but had an awful week and needed a pick me up retail therapy. The selection is superb, but the staff let me tell you about the staff. My wife and I were passing by and noticed the beautiful colours of the new collections. My wife had previously owned boutique in Europe and recognised a totally unique style of collections and designs. We were hugely impressed with both the collections and the caring nature of the staff. Always smiling never pushy and extremely knowledgeable in what could perhaps suit the clients. We just had to purchase two beautiful summer dresses (both are sampled together on the web page). Unfortunately for my wallet, my wife is hugely impressed and will be returning. Thank you for an extremely pleasurable shop and keep up the good work. Its how fashion should make you feel and my wife is still smiling. Sandy & Eric

Heartwood Forest, located near Sandridge, is a vast 347-hectare (858-acre) site and the largest continuous new native forest in the UK. The majority of the forest is newly planted, with sections of ancient woodland. It offers peaceful walks through oak, birch, and willow trees as well as wildflower meadows. The site features open grassland and woodland habitats, making it an ideal place to reconnect with nature.
Very pretty walk. Animals allowed. Well paved walkways, also some grass / muddy trails if bit more adventurous. Didn't see any bathrooms around the though. Big car park. Many different trails and routes with maps everywhere. Well worth it. Very close to the high Street aswell with 2 pubs and a cafe
Travis D — Google review
A young forest that only came into existence recently, Heartwood Forest shows all the promise of a place that's idyllic for a walk, exercise, picnic or a place to sand away a few hours with a good book or catch up with friends. There are objects dotted around the forest - some of which have had some real imagination put into them, with the arch being a personal favourite of mine. The Bluebells are the real draw here and to see them in full bloom is a real treat for the senses, though it helps to know exactly at what time of the year the flowers bloom. The benches scattered around the forest provide spectacular views of the green carpeted landscape which, on a blue tinted sunny day makes for a delightful view, wherever you choose to sit. It may be young compared to some of the ancient forests we have across the UK, but Heartwood Forest is a place everyone should come and visit for something a little more varied.

So sad. Cotswold Outdoors used to be our go-to shop for kit. We are Scout volunteers so used to tell our members to visit too. However, today I was looking to purchase a new, thicker SIM & was disappointed. The newer store seems to have less stock, with a reduced range. None of the mats they had in stock were inflated. I have a bad back so need to lie on the mat to check if it is the one for me. When I asked an assistant if I could look at a particular mat I was holding he invited me to come behind the counter to look at the listing on the screen! Eventually I persuaded him to remove the SIM from it's bag. The product instructions suggested inflating with a 'sack pump' & asked the assistant if they had one of those in the shop. He showed me, on the screen, a range of foot pumps which I'm pretty sure won't inflate a Thermarest SIM. I asked again about a 'sack pump'. He typed in 'Suck pomp' at which point I apologised for wasting his time & left.

I purchased a Rab microlight women’s alpine jacket from the St Albans store. Really good fit and felt good quality (wasn’t cheap). Within a few days the stuffing starting coming out of tiny holes. I returned it to the shop with receipt and the staff and manager refused to give a refund, would only exchange for same or similar. Unable to find anything else similar in my size so had an exchange. Within 3 wears the stuffing started to come out again. On looking at their website, several other customers had this problem, so possibly a faulty batch. Returned it again with receipt and had a battle to get a full refund. It’s a 30 mile round trip from our home and they refused to give even a voucher in compensation for 2 trips to return a faulty item. Cotswolds in St Albans used to be a go to shop for us. After this poor service, it is no longer.

Restrooms are also available on platform one for females and males respectively, as well as for persons with disability. This station doesn't accept an Ouster card for payment so ensure you have purchased your travel ticket in advance, however, you can pay with contactless bank card. Overall, Saint Albert City Train Station is a great choice for anyone looking for a hassle-free and enjoyable train journey.

This station is an absolute disaster. Trains are constantly canceled, especially on weekends, forcing passengers onto slow, inconvenient replacement buses that take forever. Thameslink is doing an incredibly poor job managing the service. A staff member at the station even told me this chaos will continue until May! That is almost two months away. As someone who regularly travels to and from St Albans, Thameslink is making my life miserable. This level of disruption is completely unacceptable. I sincerely hope someone in charge sees this review and takes action—enough is enough! 😭

Outside of London city, this station is much busy. Not bad station, just need to b update bit more. Some escalators, lights & flowers, that’s all it need. Btw still cool. Staff is good.

Poorly indicated BUS station. Used this bus station twice in my life and both times I had to spend 20 minutes (and missed connections in the process) trying to understand which bus goes the direction I need. Google map is not much help either. I guess it's just all very disorganised and you need to be a local to know your way around it.
Laura L — Google review
Fast trains, only 20 mins into St Pancras. Station is very clean and offers a coffee shop and a Sainsbury's. However trains can be crowded at peak times. Tickets are quite expensive but just think it's not too bad considering it's over 1 hour drive into St Pancras. Remember that First Class at the back of Thameslink is declassified! (meaning you can sit there with a standard class ticket)

Hi I arrived to st albans city station and was helped by karen, whom is posted at the station,I was in a bit of a bother about my ticket, karen was warm, approachable, had a pleasant smile and made me feel at ease, there was an area about karen, that displayed confidence and understanding in the most subtle manner, thank you karen so much, please show this to Marc, your manager, kind regards take care.

Specialty Museums
Nestled within the historic grounds of Salisbury Hall, the De Havilland Aircraft Museum stands as a tribute to the remarkable legacy of British aviation. This independent museum is home to an impressive array of restored military and civil aircraft, showcasing iconic models from different eras. Visitors can marvel at everything from the elegant wooden Dragon Rapide passenger plane of the 1930s to the legendary WWII Mosquito bomber and even witness history with the world’s first jet airliner, the Comet.
Well worth a visit.... plenty of exhibits and aircraft to see. Allow about 90 mins to leisurely walk around the hangars and view the aircraft outside. My personal favourite was walking through the cabin of the Comet and getting a close look at the cockpit. The museum is staffed by polite and informative volunteers. I have one minor negative though...i found the price of food and drink a bit steep.I purchased a ready-made ploughman's sandwich and small bottle of water...the cost was £7.20.(About the same as buying the items in a motorway service station.!) So if the boss of the museum is reading this maybe reconsider your cafe prices. But overall an excellent experience and i definitely recommend visiting this quaint and informative aviation museum. The date of my visit was 22/6/25.

If you are interested in aircraft, a visit to this museum is a must. Great exhibits, well displayed, friendly and helpful volunteers on hand to give you information. Three complete Mosquitoes on display, including the prototype. Plus many other types of aircraft, some of which you can enter. This is where the Mosquito was designed, and the prototype aircraft was built. A great museum!

Absolutely superb day out for myself and a few chums, as it’s centrally located to meet up. Wonderfully atmosphere here, with such knowledgeable staff, who have enthusiasm which is infectious. There’s so much here, I’ve visited a few times, and seen more on each visit. Excellent little cafe too, for a halftime snack. We were given a guided tour, which was excellent value, very comprehensive and enjoyable.

A fabulous museum and so well worth a visit. The friendliest, approachable and knowledgeable volunteers make all the difference. Quite different to the vast RAF museum down the road. The exhibits are cared for and the restoration work carried out is brilliant. The aircraft on display are superb, particularly the three Mosquitos. It’s also a pleasure to just wander around outside walking through planes like the Comet, the Dove and the 146 and after all of this to sit and joy the delights on offer in the cafe. A highly recommended visit for all aircraft/history/and all things aircraft related.
Graham J — Google review
A real jewel of a museum located on the outskirts of London. It’s full of history, with fascinating navigation and communication gadgets. They have the original Mosquito prototype, wooden fuel tanks, communications and navigation artifacts, a fuselage from the famous Comet—and even the piece that failed. I learned so much during this visit (and I thought I knew it all!). The staff at the museum are extremely friendly and eager to guide you and share countless stories about De Havilland aircraft. Many are former workers from the factory. I highly recommend it for any aviation enthusiast.

Fantastic museum with many amazing exhibits, aeroplanes, interactive activities and even a working Merlin engine! Wonderfully friendly and knowledgeable staff, lots for all ages to enjoy, plenty of aircraft to sit in and explore and a great gift shop and cafe. Visited with X4 boys ranging 9 to 18 and they all loved it. "Treasure hunt" style quiz available for kids and a great second hand book selection. Would recommend!

Redbournbury Watermill & Bakery is a historical site worth visiting on a rainy Sunday. The mill, still operational, offers plastic covers for muddy boots so visitors can explore it with ease. This fascinating watermill takes you back in time and showcases how things worked in the past. There's lots of detailed information available to learn about its history. Additionally, the bakery offers delicious bread and pastry products that are sourced and produced locally within a mile of the mill.
I was craving baked goods on this day and found this place on google maps! Upon my arrival, I was welcomed by a very friendly lady at the counter who was very enthusiastic about the mill and bakery. She was welcoming and talked me through all about the place! I then walked around the different floors of the mill and learnt a lot about how flour is made! There are descriptions everywhere to help understand how everything works. At the end, I bought a brownie and Eccles cake. Both taste amazing 😻 Highly recommend a visit!
Leland Y — Google review
A very beautiful watermill nested in the countryside near St Alban's. We visited on Saturday early in the morning, just to make sure we will be able to buy different breads and pastries. The bakery has a separate stall outside and the products are so good. I tried and tested the white sourdough, the brownie, the pumpkin bread, and the corn bread. Had my eye on the chocolate muffin, but someone bought the last two before me. We visited the mill, and we purchased flour from the shop. A big thank you to the lady that served us and to Antonio from the bakery. We definitely will be back soon.

Wow what a charming place. I stumbled upon it by chance when hiking from Hemel to St Albans. Very well preserved with a working water mill, open Saturday mornings and Sunday at some point. You can visit 4 floors of the mill and buy their bread, buns etc and even go on a baking course. There are toilets and limited parking, it can get busy with people coming to buy the products. Very nice staff.

I took my granddaughter to the Redbournbury Watermill & Bakery today. She enjoyed exploring the different floors of the museum. I enjoyed the nostalgia of the old tools in particular. The selection of breads and cakes for sale was good and at reasonable prices. The picnic area is a nice place to sit and enjoy the ambience. It is run by very friendly volunteers.

Beautiful working Flour mill with 4 floors of great history and information about the workings of the mill. Set in beautiful countryside with the beautiful watermill and see the diesel pump across the water that make the electricity for the mill. Amazing breads I bought corn bread and pumpkin bread only for £4. Great picnic seating area outside too.

Lovely experience and a hidden gem near St Albans. Very fascinating to see how the mill works and all the history that is associated with it. You can buy flour and fresh bread at very reasonable prices and walk around the estate and enjoy the nature. Shaw's Corner, once the residence of renowned Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw from 1906 to 1950, is now under the care of the National Trust. The property offers a glimpse into Shaw's life with rooms preserved as he left them, including his writing desk and garden writing hut. Visitors can enjoy script-in-hand play readings of Pygmalion during specific months.
This is a much smaller property than your Average National Trust place but makes a nice visit. The garden is very large for your average house but pretty small for a National Trust place. As long as you know this and are okay with it, it'll make a nice visit. The house tour was nice but do note it's 45 minutes and you'll feel awkward not to finish it so only go if you'll stick with it (it was interesting if you want to know the history side of it). It was pretty quiet on a Sunday morning which suggests you'll probably enjoy a less busy stay than other National Trust properties which we enjoyed.
Joe P — Google review
This National trust is the former home of George Bernard Shaw, and left as he would’ve used it. It’s not huge as has a few rooms on each of the floors, but has about one small sign per room about objects and his life, and volunteers are great. you can also see his Nobel Prize upstairs. Prebooked guided tours are available, though we did the self-guided visit, which took about 15 minutes in the house. Small garden also available to walk through, including seeing his small writing shed. Car park small, perhaps space for 15 cars, so may fill up during busy times. It’s only about a one minute walk to the house. Small used bookshop in the entry kiosk. No cafe, though a few beverages for sale in the entry kiosk. Toilet: Basic single loo at the end of the house, also accessible from the garden - or a portaloo near the front kiosk.

This plant nursery boasts one of the most beautiful collections of indoor and outdoor plants I have ever seen. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by a vibrant display of greenery that instantly lifted my spirits. The variety of plants available is truly impressive. For indoor gardening enthusiasts, there are countless options, from lush ferns to striking succulents, all thriving in splendid condition. I found it hard to resist taking home a few new additions for my indoor space! The outdoor plant selection is equally stunning. They have a wide range of flowering plants, shrubs, and trees, perfect for enhancing any garden. The staff was knowledgeable and passionate, providing valuable insights on how to care for each plant. I appreciated their recommendations based on my gardening preferences and the specific conditions of my outdoor space. The atmosphere of the nursery was serene and inviting, making it a joy to stroll through the aisles and soak in the beauty of nature. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting out, Aylett Nursery is a must-visit destination. I left feeling inspired and excited about my gardening journey. Highly recommended!

Walked through their stunning dahlia garden today and had a coffee in The coffee shop. Great experience all round!

This is a large very well stocked garden centre, and unlike a lot these days very focused on plants. It is certainly a one stop shop as they have most gardening related things all under one roof. The staff always appear to be happy and approachable and the ones we spoke to went out of there way to help. We visited to see the celebration garden at the side of the nursery it's open all year round but August is the time to visit whilst it's all in bloom. They have a restaurant it looked good but we chose to take coffee and cake near the celebration garden. The celebration garden raises money for charity It's a great shame that few people appear to donate. Toilets were clean and tidy. Dogs are permitted as long as well behaved and kept on leads. There is masses of easy access parking on site.

I frequently visit Ayletts with a friend (most weeks!). The staff are always so pleasant and welcoming. We love the restaurant and always receive great service especially from Sharon and Lucy. One of us has food intolerances and the chef always takes great care to ensure there are no ‘hidden’ ingredients that would cause a problem. This gives us great reassurance as to how well-managed the cafe and kitchen are. Thank you for all you do for your customers.

Not much left of the house, but it must have been beautiful. Lovely setting just up from the Roman Theatre. Very easy walk. Would have been nice if the new house was open when we visited, as apparently they have some pieces from the old house there. Amazing number of Red Kites to watch and listen to.

The house is now in ruins, but partial structures still remain, offering a glimpse of the once grand estate. It cannot be reached by car, so visitors need to walk through the farm for around 10 minutes to access the site.
Patrick N — Google review
Parked near Verulamium in St Albans & headed towards entrance for Roman Amphitheatre. There's a gate to side of office which allows you to pass through on to road. Only people who live & work on Gorhambury estate can drive vehicles on this road so generally not that busy. From this point its approximately 2 miles with gentle ups & downs. The walk is pleasant through parkland with sheep & cows. The old house is a ruin but information boards give you a good impression of its original size & its famous occupants.
Diane C — Google review
A very pleasant walk (approximately 2 miles) from the entrance to the Gorhambury Estate off the main road. The walk is part of the attraction, of course, along a quiet, private (gated) roadway through lovely countryside. The ruin itself is small and safe to walk around. I wouldn’t recommend traveling miles to visit here, but great if you live locally.
David S — Google review
Interesting and attractive ruin with 2 good information boards. It's a good destination to aim for on a walk up from the Roman open air theatre. All on paved roads so it's ideal for a walk after wet weather, avoiding mud and puddles. Occasional cars and vans use the route but it's pretty quiet.

A beautiful hidden gem near St Albans. The walk alone up to old Gorhambury house is worth it. Beautiful fields, trees and countryside views. Perfect for a weekend stroll to relax. The house itself is perfect place to stop and rest and take in this historic land mark a must visit. Fun fact Queen Elizabeth I visited here. Highly recommend ❤️

A beautiful day out! The views are stunning and it is a lovely experience to walk through the ruins. You can really envisage what it must have been like in its heyday. I think people of all ages would enjoy a visit. Gorhambury house itself is closed to visitors as of summer 2021; it is undergoing major refurbishments. We met Viscountess Grimston, who informed us of some informative talks that will be held about the house, collections and refurbishment. Would recommend a visit.

This glorious set of ruins situated just on the outskirts of St Albans lies at the end of a 2 mile track but the trek there is well worth the effort. The extended hike means only the hardiest of those will choose to make the journey but plentiful solitude is ample encouragement.

A fantastic theatre run mostly by volunteers. Went to see 'Steel Magnolias'. A good performance and very well produced but with an all female cast set in a hairdressing salon it was of more interest to my other-half! Car parking is now £1.50 in the evening.

Lovely theatre. Watched a good little production called She Kills Monsters and quite enjoyed it. Love how the bar brings in different tipples to match the occasions, such as Burns Night and this Double Dragon to go with the Dungeons & Dragons theme of the play.

This is a community theatre that often has really good plays that others don't. The casts are excellent but sometimes the 'set' steals the spotlight, they are really good. If you want a night out and still get a cup of tea and a biscuit, or a pint of beer, plus entertainment it all at the Abbey Theatre.

We visited the studio for a play ' constellations' which was fantastic. The venue was small and intimate perfect for the play and there's a bar open before and after showing. Will be back to see something in the larger theatre next. Such a great local find .

The show and the staff were fabulous. Just wished the bar had a bit more of a variety of drinks and snacks, or that items on the menu were actually available. The ice cream during the interval was so tasty. A sign on the door that could indicate when the doors would open would be helpful, as we had to wait outside for a while without an indication of when they would open or how long we would need to wait. My companion and I could have headed to the restaurants/bars nearby if we had known coming early to the theater was not the best option. I can't wait to go back... Just not as early as I did this time around. 😅
