St Albans Cathedral, a landmark Norman cathedral, is a must-visit in St Albans and one of its most popular tourist attractions. It offers free daily tours and the opportunity to climb the tower. With over 1700 years of history, it is the oldest continuous site of Christian worship in Britain. The cathedral features stunning stained glass windows and boasts the longest nave in the country.
Beautiful on the outside and inside, very historic and a place a calm reflection to wander round. Free entry but lots of places where you can donate via tapping your card. Very friendly staff inside who recommended the parts of the cathedral to make sure we didn’t miss!

I live in London, and visiting this city and this cathedral was one of the most beautiful experiences I had over the weekend. It was truly enjoyable. St Albans Cathedral is absolutely stunning — it feels like every wall and door has a story to tell, as if they’ve witnessed countless events over the centuries. The atmosphere is peaceful yet powerful, and walking through the cathedral felt like stepping into history. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves architecture, history, or simply beautiful places.
Bab M — Google review
A magnificent architectural with loads of history and story. We visited in a weekday thus not crowded at all. You will be embraced by a deep sense of peace and afford to slow down to appreciate the view around you. Worth a visit together with the town.
Lydia C — Google review
The sheer scale of St Albans Cathedral, a structure of profound history and weight, provided the perfect canvas for the Poppy Fields light installation by Luxmuralis last night. It was more than an event; it was a deeply moving, sensory experience designed for quiet contemplation and remembrance. The massive, soaring architecture of the Nave, usually bathed in the soft glow of natural light or high electric lamps, was utterly transformed by darkness and vibrant digital projection.
Kris M — Google review
This an absolutely stunning building dating originally from the Norman period but with additions over the centuries. The place was a pilgrimage site long before the Norman's arrived and the tomb of St Alban is still a pilgrimage site today. The cathedral possesses the longest nave of any cathedral in Britain and there are a number of medieval frescoes still visible; fascinating even if somewhat faded.
Bernard S — Google review
Being there you imagine that the place is nearly 1000!!!!! Years old. Some buildings were built from the Romans bricks. It is the oldest and one of the most significant church in England. This church saw everything. Besides that, town is beautiful, going there you should have enough time. It is hard to find the parking lot.
DNK — Google review
Absolutely enjoyed my visit. A stunning place that showcases its long history through a mix of architectural styles. I just loved every single detail, from the floor and columns to the ceiling.
Erin Y — Google review
Enjoyed our visit there. They have a free guided tour of the cathedral which runs for about an hour; I strongly recommend it. The entry is free too!

Park
Nature & Parks
Verulamium Park is a 100-acre green space in St Albans, named after the Roman settlement it was built on. The park features a lake with various waterfowl, a playground for children, benches for relaxation, and sports facilities including tennis courts and an outdoor fitness area. It also houses ruins of ancient city walls and serves as a film set for the musical fantasy 'Wonka.'
It's a beautiful, extremely large park!! Verulamium Park is lovely for dog walks, taking the kids to the park, or even just nice to sit and have a picnic. People of all ages can come here. Some footpaths are underwater depending on the time of the year. The public toilets may possibly become flooded too, as it's very close to the lake. There are lots of nature and plenty of wildlife on the lakes. There is a coffee shop that sells hot and cold drinks, ice cream, doggie ice cream and treats, with some hot and cold food to eat. There's a museum at the edge of the park that has a lot of history of the area, which is nice. There is the oldest pub situated just outside the park which is an easy walk to get to (ye olde fighting cocks). It is all wheelchair accessible and has alot of pay and display parking on site.
Annalise M — Google review
A delightful park for walks. However, I gave it four stars because some footpaths are underwater so we can't use them. Overall, it is one of my favourite parks in St Albans. Pictures are from the summer and winter times.
Nonhlie E — Google review
Verulamium Park in St Albans is a delightful 100‑acre haven that effortlessly blends rich Roman heritage with modern leisure— from walking alongside ancient city walls and a hypocaust mosaic to watching swans glide across the ornamental lake . The park offers something for everyone: a thoughtfully themed modern playground, seasonal splash park, crazy golf, and outdoor gym for active fun . With well-maintained paths, picnic spots, and wildlife aplenty, it’s a serene escape or a vibrant family day out. While parking can be tight at peak times, the charm, history, and space on offer make it a top spot in the city—truly the perfect blend of nature, culture, and community. Highly recommended for all ages!
Jayita R — Google review
Calm, tranquil park in Saint Albans. Nice getaway. Museum on one end. Roman wall along one path. Playground. Lots of large green spaces and a small lake.

Huge park. Lots of space to explore and decent water feature. Enjoyed visiting. Seemed quite popular and busy with tourists.
Tom D — Google review
Verulamium Park in St Albans is a lovely mix of open green spaces, rich Roman history, and fun activities for all ages. You can stroll by the peaceful lake, explore ancient ruins like the Roman wall and mosaic floor, or enjoy the children’s playground and splash park. It is a great spot for families, picnics, and relaxed afternoons surrounded by nature and heritage.
Rudrosekhor C — Google review
Verulamium Park is great relaxing by water, we went there and unfortunately no more water fountains. At one end the water is filthy and smelly. Great spaces for picnic and a pint at ye olde fighting cocks one of the oldest pubs at the far corner of the park.
Paul H — Google review
A really beautiful and spacious park with plenty of greenery. The place is full of birds, and fish in the lake, making it a peaceful spot to relax. There’s a children’s playground near a café, but it isn’t free. According to Google, there’s also a free playground somewhere in the park, but I didn’t get a chance to explore the whole area to find it.

Immerse yourself in the ancient world at Verulamium Museum, located within the picturesque Verulamium Park. This educational museum offers a unique glimpse into Roman life with recreated rooms, interactive displays, and a fascinating array of artifacts including gold Roman coins. The site, built on one of the largest Roman settlements in Britain, provides guided talks and large-scale mosaics for an immersive experience.
We were in St Albans for a few days. I didn't know what to expect as it's so close to London, a place I cannot abide. But it was SO beautiful. Very quaint and very English. The cathedral is wonderful with medieval wallpaintings still intact and two saints shrines. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. But the big surprise was the roman remains. In the middle of the park below the cathedral, in a small building, is a beautiful roman mosaic. Then we found the museum. Here are some fabulous mosaics, plasterwork and all sorts of other finds from the old roman town of Verulamium. I was particularly taken with the contents of a carpenters workshop. The hand tools were not dissimilar to those used today. Back outside, we found considerable lengths of the old roman walls. What a wonderful place.
Jon S — Google review
A fascinating collection of Roman artefacts from the ancient city of Verulamium the ruins of which are located beneath modern Saint Albans. Also worth visiting is the preserved hypocaust ("hot air central heating channels") from a Roman Villa located across the park a short distance from the museum and also visit the amazing Roman theatre across the road from the nearby church.
Derek W — Google review
Well maintained and a huge park with a play area, garden, golf course and cycling trails. The walking trails near the pond has to be looked in to as they were messed by duck poop. It has ample car parking but they do charge for it. It’s a great place for a family picnic or to hang around with family and friends.

Having been to Rome, Pompeii, and Pergamum among other places from Roman history this little museum is one of the best to be found. Spectacular mosaics and wall paintings. And more to visit outside in the surrounding park.

Verulamium Museum – St Albans I absolutely loved my visit to Verulamium Museum—an enchanting window into Roman Britain nestled right beside Verulamium Park. The museum is compact yet rich in treasures, offering a wonderfully immersive experience without ever feeling overwhelming . 🔍 Highlights Spectacular mosaics: The museum displays some of the finest Roman mosaics outside the Mediterranean—each intricate design beautifully preserved . Fascinating artefacts: From the glittering Sandridge Hoard of gold coins to the eerie lead coffin of "Postumus," every exhibit tells a compelling historical story . Recreated Roman rooms: Stepping into these reconstructed spaces, complete with authentic frescoes and domestic scenes, felt like travelling back in time . Interactive & family-friendly: Artefact handling, explorer trails, touchscreen elements, dress-up and children’s activities make it engaging for all ages . 👍 What stood out Exceptional presentation: Thoughtful layout with clear audio-visual aids that bring history to life . Stellar reputation: A Tripadvisor Traveller's Choice award winner and recipient of a top education award—credible recognition of its quality . Perfect-sized visit: You can enjoy a rich experience in just 1–2 hours, ideal for relaxed or family-friendly visits . 🌳 Plus More to Explore Right outside, Verulamium Park beckons with its Roman hypocaust, theatre, city walls and green trails—a great extension to your museum trip . --- Overall: A thoroughly delightful and informative experience—compact, captivating, and accessible. Highly recommended for history lovers, families, or anyone curious about everyday life in ancient Roman Britain. 👍 Rating: 5/5 — A hidden gem in St Albans that I’d happily revisit!

Aug25- History on Your Doorstep talk on Roman Verulanium, women and Boudicca. Fascinating lecture /visual screening work by a history/archeology graduand, Niamh. The Sr colleague too was so knowledgeable. Thoroughly enjoyed and got to walk round the museum after. Loses a star for the lack of parking necessitating several drives round waiting it hoping someone was leaving.

An excellent little museum with loads to offer. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and learned a lot about this historically significant partner the world. A rich variety of archaeology is on display, with lots of supporting information. Entry prices are reasonable, with a discount if you live locally. The museum is wheelchair accessible and has accessible toilet facilities. Staff are friendly and helpful.

Lovely day out! My son came here on a school trip and suggested it for a family day out at the weekend! Was very interesting, so many cool things to discover. For a smaller museum there was a lot to see and learn! Everything is on one level so it’s wheelchair and pram accessible! Other than the toilets which are downstairs but there is a lift! One of the members was staff were particularly sweet and considerate of our situation! Thank you C.

St Albans Museum + Gallery, run by charity Ask for Clive and supported by sponsors like St Albans BID, offers a variety of activities and events. The museum will be illuminated in Pride colors, and there will be special Pride-themed activities across the city. Additionally, the impressive St Albans Cathedral hosts special events throughout the year, including an art installation featuring 10,000 paper doves.
Enjoyed our visit to the museum. The old courtroom is now used as a cafe retaining a lot of it's original features. You can visit the old cells below the courtroom, some have been converted into toilets! There is also rooms covering the history of the police force and the history of the building and it's use. Part of the museum was dedicated to pictures of local homeless people with some stunning photos. The cafe has some really nice snacks and drinks. This is free to enter with donation boxes inside, if you are visiting and wandering the shops and market make the effort to pop in and look around. There's carparks all around but parking is expensive starting at £2.10 for the first hour.

A pleasant surprise to find a cafe in this museum where you can have a coffee or simple meal inside a court room. Don’t miss the chance to visit the jail underground where you can experience narrow passages to the jail rooms and the super small toilets.
Villia H — Google review
Very unadvertised place the old court is now a coffee shops you can sit in the dock and sip tea. The holding cells are open to the pubic too. The upstairs room with there high ceilings and large windows make for a good exhibition space. The basement had an exhibition about St.Albans Art school which was fun to see and read about all the people involved.

The St Albans Museum + Gallery is a fantastic free spot to visit and a real gem in the heart of the city. Housed in the old courthouse, it’s packed with character and history, making it an interesting and fun experience for all ages. As soon as you step in, you’ll find a lovely café on the right, serving great coffee, cakes, and light meals. The best part? You can take your food straight into the old courtroom ahead and enjoy it in this wonderfully preserved historic space. Sitting where justice once happened makes for a unique dining experience! Make sure to head downstairs to the old jail cells, Exploring the original cells and even the quirky toilet cells adds a real sense of the past. The museum also hosts a changing set of displays that keep things fresh and interesting, so there’s always something new to see. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, it’s a great way to spend a few hours without spending a penny. Definitely worth a visit!
K M — Google review
Really happy to enjoy a coffee in a old courtroom, definitely a unique and unusual experience. I had a great time here. Big thanks to those who’ve kept the place so well and opened it to the public. The museum has loads of Pre-Roman and Roman artefacts as well, which was super interesting, and the shop has some really nice quality items too.

The Roman Mosaic and Hypocaust in Verulamium Park is a must-see for history enthusiasts. The site houses an incredibly well-preserved Roman mosaic, which was once part of a grand Roman townhouse's reception rooms. This intricate mosaic, nearly 2000 years old, showcases the ancient art form in all its glory.
There was a group of schoolchildren here when I arrived. Judging by their running and screaming, the splendor of the mosaic floor was truly driving them wild! Seriously, though, this is incredible. They have signs that provide an excellent history of where you are and what you are seeing, and the walkway around the entire perimeter lets you get a very good look. The walk through the park to get there was also nice. Don’t leave St Albans without stopping here.
Caleb L — Google review
Definitely worth a visit if you like anything Roman, 1800 years old, and looks great, very well looked after, you should visit the museum as well (£10 per adult) as they have more there, and the Roman theatre (£3 per adult) While you're in the Hypocaust you can listen to voices from the Hypocaust's history from mosaic artists to archaeologists, on a wind-up machine.
Pete H — Google review
In short: A Hidden Gem of Roman History in St Albans. During a visit to the park, I was genuinely surprised to discover a unique and exquisite piece of Roman history. Initially, my son noticed what he thought was a large coach beyond the play area, while I mistook the structure for a toilet block. It was a large, grey, and unassuming building, lacking any clear signposts or information, which made it seem unworthy of a visit. However, curiosity got the better of me, as the structure appeared so out of place that I felt compelled to investigate. Imagine my surprise upon discovering that it housed an excavated Roman mosaic, lovingly preserved within its walls! The unexpected discovery was a delight. Upon entering, the atmosphere was eerily quiet and chillingly cold. Accompanied only by my dog, I walked around the platform, reading the informative placards and marveling at the craftsmanship and preservation of the mosaic. It’s a testament to St Albans’ commitment to preserving their rich Roman history. This hidden gem is yet another example of the city's dedication to preserving its historical treasures, and I wish more towns and cities would invest in similar endeavors.

Amazing piece of history, the mosiac flooring remains from a house built approx 1900yrs ago. Free entry
N W — Google review
Free Entry An absolutely stunning Roman Mosaic in perfect condition from AD200 (1,821 years ago) discovered in the 1930’s. We visited this after our tour around the Verulamium Museum which is about a 5 min walk across the park. The building itself is very modern.
K M — Google review
I was very surprised to learn you could just walk in to see the mosaic and hypocaust, and it's not got anyone around to ensure it's preserved, so it's good that most people seem to be respectful and keep it clean. The mosaic is incredibly detailed and it's amazing to see something that was built for decorative purposes still around nearly 2000 years after construction.
Atlas — Google review
To get an idea on what the Roman's bought to Britain with their sheer indulgence this amazing floor shows what they did for England. I was surprised that there was no one present at the site considering the importance of this site. I was appalled to see a plastic bottle had been dropped into one of the original vents designed for channeling the hot steam under the floor. There is good access for those with limited walking and to say there aren't toilets present on this small site. Again like the main museum there isn't any scale models to show you what the original building looked like or where the building would have been situated in the town. The nearest to this would be the drawing at the information board outside the building.
Gareth L — Google review
A rather long, hot walk across the park, and unfortunately not much to see when you get there. Thankfully it is free entry. It is a mosaic inside a building that houses it for protection. Strange location, but that's where it is. Directions clear with signposts throughout the park. Some description of it inside.

The Roman Theatre of Verulamium, built around 140 AD, is a unique historical site located in a serene countryside setting. Unlike typical amphitheaters, this theater features a central stage and was used for various events including religious festivals, armed combat, and wild animal shows. The ruins were discovered in the mid-19th century and subsequent excavations revealed additional structures dating back to the First Century. Adjacent to the Verulamium Museum and St.
Great if you love anything Roman, The Roman Theatre is an excavated site within the Roman walled city of Verulamium. Although there are other Roman theatres in Britain for example at Camulodunum, the one at Verulamium is claimed to be the only example of its kind, being a theatre with a stage rather than an amphitheatre. There are some other remains and an underground shrine to see, £3 per adult entrance. It is sometimes used for theatrical performances, but you would have to visit their website for more information.
Pete H — Google review
This place is a must when you’re in St Albans, and at a mere £3, it’s well worth it. The theatre dates to around 140AD and is very well preserved. They still put on performances here, and while I wasn’t able to see one, I bet it’s an extraordinary experience. In addition to the theatre, there are also the remains of a row of shops, a villa, and a shrine, so be sure to check those out while you’re here.

Great evening seeing .. A Funny thing happened on the way to the Forum … very funny and great actors .. it was a musical and the singing was really excellent. Great Production … Took a little blanket for our legs as around 9 pm got a little chilly , two musicians playing the music , exceeded my expectations and great to see a live outdoor comedy play .. park in the museum across the road as no parking there . Well done the players !! There is a bar area and another small cabin in the arena area selling drinks , crisps , ice cream .. all beautifully lit with bulbs around the top if the arena and seating for pre show picnics / drinks . Really lovely atmosphere and much improved surroundings since I last went a few years ago .

We went there to see a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, with a bit of a difference - it was set in a 1970s working men's club. It sounds odd, but it worked, and the place has an amazing atmosphere, particularly on a warm summer's evening as the sun is going down. If you can see one of the summer shows, do it. If not, go for a look around anyway.
Gary B — Google review
We have been here a few times and always had a really good time. Tonight's performance was Stephen Sondheim's musical comedy 'A funny thing happened on the way to the forum', which was brilliantly acted and sung in the ever gorgeous outdoor OVO Roman theatre. We had an excellent view of the stage from seats D8-10. There were two bars and if you wanted you could join the actors in the bar after the show, we will be back!

Not been here in a long while and so glad that I did, thanks to the kindness of strangers. There's lots to see and take in, but take cash just in case as you may need it, depending on technology. There's a few shows being held there in the summer that I'd personally like to attend. It'd be an iconic venue to say the least. The staff are lovely there. It's off the beaten track from St Albans itself so to speak, but not by that much. Definitely visit. You shan't regret it.

This is a wonderful historic place, the setting is so quiet and peaceful and the views of the fields surrounding are lovely. It is so clean and tidy and a good fair price to enter here. At some points you are able to get up close to the ruins , the rocks and stones used in constructing this wonderful building. There are benches around this place so you can sit and relax, It takes you back to a different time than we know today and makes you think about how life really was then. There is still some new discoveries here which i never knew about and they are still working of different parts of this site including having just unearthed a row of shops which i found wonderful to see. There is also a underground shrine that looks lovely but you can't go down there just can look from the top. Really enjoyed this visit and made a great day out in St Albans.

St Michael's Church, located in the heart of St Albans, is a historic site with early-medieval features. The church stands on the former Roman basilica and offers a glimpse into England's past. Surrounding the church is St Michael's Village, a picturesque area with narrow lanes, historic buildings, thatched cottages, and traditional pubs. The church itself was constructed in the 14th century and showcases a stunning Gothic exterior with large stained glass windows.
Much of the building is late 10th or early 11th century, making it the most significant surviving Anglo-Saxon building in the county. St Michael's is built on the site of the Roman basilica of Verulamium.

Such nice people here. I was made up feel very welcome when I visited as a stranger. They were even kind to my pet who tagged along and asked no questions. I really appreciated this. If anyone could win the most like Jesus behaviour of love and kindness without prejudice or question, it would be here. I would have been open and explained why I must bring my pet along, but it meant more then I can ever Express to just be accepted in without questions or nosiness. It’s the first time my privacy has been respected in my travels. We attended one of the Easter week services and it was the best I’ve ever been to. Not because of any profound sermons or productions, but because of the smiles to a stranger, the love shown to my animal, the silence of so many people for 45 minutes total silence. People outside in the world make some much noise and want to be heard. But here was the kind of place I need. Silence with nonverbal communication via kind eyes, sweet smiles, childlike glee when meeting my pet, warm welcome to someone who is unknown

An oasis of peace, Architecture, beautiful place, there is a piano and restroom convenient for disable and non disable people inside very clean. You can leave a donation with credit/debit cards or cash. There is an area for children which mean they have an session with mothers/children from 10am to 12 am.

Picturesque little church in a peaceful setting amongst trees. Parts of the building date back to before the Norman period, and inside the church has a light, airy atmosphere. The 19th century stained glass windows are striking, and one is surrounded by ornate wall paintings. Regular services are held at the church; when these are not taking place it is usually open to visitors between 09:30 and 17:00.

A beautiful church, with lots to recommend it. Final resting place of Francis Bacon.

A wonderful Church with so much History. This is a amazing Church and grounds. I loved every minute of being inside. So much to see here from the wonderful story telling windows to all the paintings on the walls and side of the windows. The walls are even breathtaking in here. The floor looks splendid and pretty too and i was just amazed how how peaceful and relaxing it was in here. The grounds outside are in perfect condition with no litter or mess anywhere to be seen, Also some lovely big tress giving the grounds and Church some nice shade. I really loved being here, a amazing place .

Very quiet and private. My children loved the I Spy game provided to find things around the church. I particularly enjoyed the old painting and the sign showing how the building had changed over the centuries from the 900s to present day.

An Anglo-Saxon church founded in the 10th century with later additions but without any major 19th century alterations. Day of Judgment on panel from the 15th century. Large, mature yews in the churchyard signify the continuity of worship through the ages.

The Clock Tower in St Albans is a 15th-century belfry with a 19th-century clock and an observation area accessible via 93 steps. It stands as the only surviving medieval town belfry in England, symbolizing the resistance of the people of St Albans against the abbot's power. Visitors can explore its history on guided walking tours, which also include visits to St Albans School, one of the oldest schools globally.
I enjoyed the view from the top after climbing 93 steps. The staircase is very tight so if you're claustrophobic, it may not be ideal for you. But worth giving it a try for the view.
Nonhlie E — Google review
It is worth the stairs for the best view in town, but be aware it is a very narrow spiral staircase.
James D — Google review
We were very lucky to be up the clock tower at an exact hour and I was very impressed. If you like history, if you like to see how things work and how they used to work, you will love this just as much as I did. It's only £2/person and you get to also enjoy the top view from the tower. The way up is narrow and quite steep but so worth it. The two gentlemen volunteering at the entrance were so nice and I will definitely visit again. If you are happy with your experience, at the end you can make a very much appreciated donation towards keeping the tower open for the public. Strongly recommend! 10/10
Ionela O — Google review
The Clock Tower was built between 1403 and 1412, and is believed to have been completed in 1405. It has been claimed to be the only remaining medieval town belfry in England. Its construction has been seen as a protest against the power of the local abbey to regulate time-keeping in the town. The Tower was built close to the site of the Eleanor cross. Twelve Eleanor crosses were constructed throughout eastern England under the orders of King Edward I between 1291 and 1294 in memory of his wife Eleanor of Castile. The site of each cross marks the nightly resting place of Eleanor's funeral procession. Unfortunately, it was shut on the day we visited.

Did an impromptu trip up tower. £2 each. Seemed to be staffed by friendly volunteers. Limited space so they have to moderate the entry . Very narrow staircase - don’t forget to duck!
Dave K — Google review
The clock tower is an impressive landmark that is definitely worth a visit. Its architecture is stunning and the clock itself is a marvel. The tower is located in a bustling area with plenty of shops and restaurants nearby, making it a great spot to spend an afternoon. The view from the top is breathtaking and offers a unique perspective of the city. Overall, I highly recommend checking out the clock tower if you're in the area.

Lovely views at the top and really interesting history. There are 93 steps that are quite steep and narrow... however you can stop at each floor to read history or to let people pass up/down. The volunteers were very informative and fun, would definitely recommend.

Nestled within the bustling St Albans City railway station, the St Albans Signal Box Preservation Trust offers a delightful glimpse into the world of vintage railways. This charming attraction is home to a Grade II listed signal box, originally built in 1892 by the Midland Railway, making it one of the largest preserved signal boxes in existence. Managed by dedicated volunteers, visitors can explore an impressive collection of railway memorabilia including signs and model trains that will surely ignite nostalgia for train enthusiasts and curious travelers alike.
A place worth recommending. The people working here are exceptionally polite and do their work with incredible passion. Admission is free, but it's worth donating. I got there when it was closed and yet I was shown around the entire signal box. You can see a lot of interesting equipment used on the railway in the past, and even move the switches and set the semaphores.
Joanna K — Google review
Fascinating place, to be able to step back in time and see how the trains used to run. My grandchild loved it nearly as much as I did.
Noway J — Google review
A great little gem of a signal box and gardens alongside the railway. The staff there are very friendly and will show you around the working signals that are in the garden. The highlight is a demonstration of signal working from the signal box from a very informative gentleman. Refreshments are mugs of tea and free biscuits and you can keep the mugs for a nominal fee. You can also watch the mainline trains from the garden or from the signal box. A big thankyou to all the staff and including the lady that sold me a DVD of past lines in Hertfordshire. Highly recommended for all ages even adults. Free entrance but do please give donations to the running of this amazing place in St Albans

Lovely bunch of volunteers who have restored an old and derelict signal box and made it into a community asset. Open around twice a month and worth visiting. Lots of good stories about the railway, and demonstrations that would be good for children. Nice little garden as well. Book shop and tea and biscuits on offer.
David B — Google review
This was a brilliant couple of hours. The people running this place have so much knowledge about the history of the signal box, local area, trains running on the tracks right now, physics and engineering of the signal operations. They were excellent at engaging my 9yr old son with both knowledge and hands on operation of the signals. They shared their enthusiasm for railways and history and connected with him in a way that other museums have not been able. Just brilliant.
Boudica W — Google review
To see the work that has gone into the restoration of the building you can understand the devotion everyone had and has to keep the Signal Box up and running for people to see. It may well be free entry but I'm pretty sure every penny donated by visitors is used to the last penny in the upkeep or to purchase more historic items before they are lost.

The Roman Wall of St Albans, dating back to around 250-270 A.D., is a remaining portion of the protective wall that surrounded the city of Verulamium. Located in Verulamium Park, this ancient structure showcases recognizable Roman building techniques. In its prime, the wall spanned over 3km (2 miles), safeguarding the Roman city. Today, only small sections of the wall remain for visitors to explore.
Ancient wall remains. The area is beutyfull, parks, river, lake ... worth a visit. Close to St Albans cathedral, city centre - walking distance. Parking is a bit difficult to find.
Florin D — Google review
This wall has deteriorated alarmingly over the past few years, it has discoloured to the point where the red brick has become distinguishable from the rest. It has a large bush growing right next to wall, and inside the fenced area is overgrown with grass and leaves, it just comes across as unloved, which I'm sure is not the case!
Adrian P — Google review
Amazing place to take families and learn about the history. Formerly the tribal capital of the native Catuvellauni tribe, Verulamium was conquered by the Romans during their invasion of Britain in 43 AD. By 50 AD, Verulamium had become a major Roman town, and as such was a prime target during the revolt of Boudica in 61 AD, when it was burnt to the ground. From Verulamium Park there is a magnificent view of St Alban’s Cathedral and Abbey Church, constructed in 1077, and said to be located on the site of St Alban’s execution. Things to do playground with swings, climbing frames, trampolines, mini golf, splash park, a cafe, outside gym, volleyball courts. A great day out for the whole family.
N W — Google review
Beautiful parkland near lake. Roman walls, mosaics and museum. Recommended
Kim K — Google review
The Romans got so comfortable in the area that it was actually the Iceni tribe that destroyed the area around 61AD. Subsequent rebuilds and fortifications had to be to do with local BRITISH tribes mostly at war with each other or at war with anyone who accepted the Romans as neighbours. People forget that the Romans left with good reason. We were a rough neighbourhood.

A truly memorable place to visit. Find a film you like, book a seat (downstairs if you can), and enjoy the experience. This is so far removed from modern mainstream, multiplex cinema experiences that you just have to live it to know.
Mark O — Google review
We had a terrible experience with Odyssey - we could not attend our booking due to factors beyond our control, and despite taking the time to physically visit the cinema earlier in the day, and speak with a member of staff, they were unwilling to compromise their ‘strict no refund’ policy. I was advised to see if any family or friends could take our tickets, or failing that - try to sell them on Facebook Marketplace?! I requested that a gift voucher could be issued, as we still wanted to attend the cinema & experience a showing, but even that reasonable request was refused point-blank. Now our 2 seats will supposedly be left vacant, potentially causing other attendees to this evenings showing to not be able to get in - it’s short sighted, and really poor customer service. Given the lack of compassion on the part of the staff, the cost of our tickets, and overall bad impression, we will not be encouraging anyone to risk their evening attending the Odyssey.

You can explore iconic locations like Hogwarts, Diagon Alley, and Platform 9¾ while learning about special effects and seeing authentic props from the films.
Had an amazing day out. Relatively easy to drive to, but a fair way out of London. Book well in advance and definitely go early in the morning. At 8:30 I got to view up close and personal. Once 11:00 came, it was packed. All the staff were wonderful apart from one in the shop who ruined the experience a little. However everyone else was super friendly, willing to help out and answer any questions. Well worth the money and food prices were reasonable. Loved that they had water fountains, free WiFi and a baby change room and sensory rooms. Stroller and disabled person friendly. Some bits might be scary for little kids. There is plenty of parking.

Our first visit to the Harry Potter Studios in London was truly magical! The staff were so friendly and everyone wished my little girl a happy birthday after noticing her badge from the information desk, which made the day extra special. The sets, costumes, creatures, models, and special effects were absolutely incredible. The information throughout was fascinating, and the memorial to one of the artists who passed away was a beautiful and heartfelt touch. You can really feel the spirit of the films here with the dedication, creativity, and family bond between the cast, crew, and production team shines through every display. The shops, café, and food were fantastic too!We travelled three and a half hours to visit, and it was completely worth it. A wonderful, magical experience we’ll never forget! ✨

Amazing place! Its been many years since I was last there and its nice that more things have been added in that time. Went during the dark arts time and was fun to see the death eather preforming at different locations around the studio. Would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys Harry Potter! The lay out is brilliant and just getting to see how it was all made is amazing.

What a brilliant experience. My daughter and I are both very much into HP. We have always wanted to visit the tour but felt it was expensive. Upon looking properly it wasn’t as much as I thought and it worked really well as a birthday present for her. When we arrived we were both in awe at how amazing it was, from the dragon hanging from the roof, to the tour itself. I thought we would be there about 2 hours and get bored! We were there close to 4 and loved every second of it! It really brought the books and films to life and we both had a great day out. We would Definately come again! P.s. the butter beer is kinda sweet and strange tasting, def try it, but don’t go buying 6 pints of it in one go!

We had arranged a visit to the Warner Bros. Studio for our daughter’s birthday, as she’s crazy about Harry Potter. We were greeted by Menaka at the ticket collection counter. She was incredible!! 😃 Super friendly and charismatic in every way, and a true potterhead too! Our daughter was fully engaged in conversation with Menaka who shared all the wonderful things to look out for whilst on the tour. We gained tips on how to manage our time during the tour, which took 5 hours in total, including a break at the Butterbeer Bar. Menaka also gave our girl a birthday badge and several other goodies, which truly delighted her. We were amazed by the genuine kindness shown to make our daughter feel special 💓 We had arrived over an hour earlier than our scheduled tour time, so Menaka encouraged us to enjoy lunch in the Food Hall. We loved it! All dishes were very tasty and generous in portion, so we were fully prepared for the grand tour 🤩 As a birthday girl, our daughter was given the special privilege to open the door to Hogwarts! 🎉 From then on, the tour was outstanding. Spectacular sets, fun green screen experience and entertaining death eater performances. Beware of the Dementors and Acromantulas in the forbidden forest! 😨 Overall, a superb day out made extra special by all staff members, though Menaka was our favourite!! 🌟

Hatfield House, Park and Gardens is a grand Jacobean stately home located on the site of Elizabeth I's childhood home. The house was built in 1611 by Charles Cecil and is set within the picturesque 42-acre Great Park. It features stunning examples of Jacobean artisanship, including the famous Grand Staircase and Great Hall where members of the Royal Court were entertained.
One of the most beautiful houses we have ever visited. The trip here was made so much more special by Dermot. A huge thank you for making us feel so welcome Dermot. We felt like we got the VIP treatment, you are a wonderful asset to such a magnificent house, it was a pleasure to meet you. The staff make this place. They are incredibly kind and have a wealth of knowledge. It was not busy at all when we visited which added to the charm. It’s also impeccably kept. We did the wood walk after we visited the house which I would also recommend. I was so impressed I’ll be telling everyone to visit.

What a wonderful place this is your visit, especially if you're a history lover or architecture enthusiast! I absolutely adored the rambling Gardens with a choice of different length walks, the cafe was very relaxed with a range of food and drinks but the highlight for me was the incredible tour of the old Elizabethan building by very knowledgeable and friendly Dermot! What a pleasure it was to enjoy such an in depth and interesting talk by such an experienced gentleman. We would definitely visit again!!

It was very lovely place to visit. Free parking and only short walk to the house and gardens. Very brilliant, smiley and pleasant people work there, it was not a problem for them to help us use the lift a few times,so thank you.! It makes the visit so much easier and nicer. It's not easy to get around everywhere if you have a buggy or especially the walker.. Very recommend this place to visit!

What a gorgeous hidden gem just north of London crammed full of history. Very knowledgeable and helpful guides in each room. Check out their website as they put on ‘festival’ type events. The grounds are well kept. Only downside for me was you have to pay extra to go into the palace (£8 I believe). The ‘marmite’ fountain at the back of the house is interesting. I loved it. I will definitely be back.

I don't even know where to start to describe this fantastic place! We spent about five hours there and loved every single minute of it. There is just so much to see! We first visited the Gardens, which are stunning. Then we spontaneously opted for a guided tour of the Old Palace, which absolutely blew us away. I must admit that when we had decided to visit Hatfield House, we weren't even aware of the Old Palace and its significant history, so it felt like an extra bonus. Our guide was not only very knowledgeable, but also extremely engaging - a pure joy to listen to and get lost in the stories from days gone by. And then the house itself, which is absolutely marvellous in every respect. The staff in each of the rooms were genuinely eager to tell their story and engage with the visitors, so we were able to have long chats, which we thoroughly enjoyed! A long walk to the Oak Tree and back completed our visit, which exceeded our expectations by far. It didn't go unnoticed that unlike most historic houses in Britain, the gift shop was mostly stocked with local produce, rather than the usual souvenirs. But although we couldn't find anything to buy, we didn't even mind that. I got the feeling that despite all its fascinating history and splendour, Hatfield House doesn't seem nearly as commercialised as many similar places (we were surprised about the small number of visitors in the middle of summer), and that would actually seem a good thing. As a result, our visit had a very intimate touch, and we felt individually valued, rather than being a part of big masses of tourists passing through. Our visit turned out to be the highlight of our 10-day holiday in the UK!

Huge gardens & park with multiple routes for avid walkers / dog walking & a fantastic set up for a lovely morning / family day out. Easy parking, we visited their shops and cafe in their entry area, headed to the loo, got ice cream and made our way around their grounds in a beautiful sunny day! Might feel expensive for a walk but a worthy day out for family / friends and a great adventure location with food, facilities, and beautiful nature! Head here for a great day out when the sun is up!

You can feel the history at Hatfield house. You have the spectacular house, built by Robert Cecil, along with the old palace, where Elizabeth 1st and Edward would have been bought up. You can almost imagine them playing in the wonderful West Gardens as you walk around. The staff are full of information and love to share their wealth of knowledge, just ask. After the house, we went for a walk through the woods, down to the picturesque river. My mother is in a wheelchair, but we had no problems getting around. Everywhere is accessible. Just be prepared for some inclines in the woodland walks.

Café Rouge is a French restaurant with a retro feel in St Albans. The food is delicious, the wine excellent and the staff charming. It's perfect for those who want to experience classic French cuisine in an authentic setting.
Went for a meal out with family curtesy of Tesco Clubcard vouchers, no problem using them. Very lovely waiter Mario made sure we had everything we needed. Food very nice and enjoyed by us all.

Visited Café Rouge in St Albans for the first time and it was a good experience. Used a Groupon discount code with a special menu and the staff were helpful. Friendly customer service and waitress. The place was near empty but it was a homely and peaceful environment to sit in. The food quality was great and seasoned well. Recommend
Chris A — Google review
Food was excellent, very tasty and well presented. They had a good selection of drinks as well. The decor of the place is really cool and everything was clean. The service was quick. It is not the cheapest place to eat; however the service and quality was worth it. The only annoying thing is parking! But let that put you off, overall a very good experience, recommended.
Stephen B — Google review
Awesome Art Deco location. Very bright and sunny due to the glass panel roof. Afternoon Tea for two was spot on and was enough to carry you through the rest of the day. Staff were attentive and polite and facilities spotless. Highly recommend both the location and the afternoon tea.
Mahesh M — Google review
Lovely food and friendly service on the whole. This branch is set in a lovely period building complete with a glass roof. Service was a little slow to begin with, but the foid was excellent.
Jay G — Google review
Very nice cafe rouge, great building with full glass ceiling. We had afternoon tea with prosecco which was good value. Some confusion by staff over their own promotions, so check details and keep your whits about you! Updated as we visited a 2nd time and what a difference... no longer a nice range of sandwiches... just dry crusty mini breads with minimum amount of filling, just look at the pate of the pate on the knife that's all there was.... unlikely to go back a 3rd time.
Olac C — Google review
Had dinner here and also breakfast.... lovely old building, like sitting in a conservatory...... Food well cooked and tasty, staff helpful, and very friendly, not one French!! no waiting, excellent service.
Angela A — Google review
Food was mostly good, loved the art deco style, camembert cheese and baguette were excellent. The burger’s taste was okay though a bit plain. But it was good overall

Decided to explore away from central St Albans and found a great locsl where Madge was a star. People knew her famous Dad Flat Eric. Had Harvey's Sussex best..lovely. Food looks good. Surprisingly large beer garden.

Very good food and beers, good garden space including outside sheltered area (the dog house). Dog friendly. Quiz every Tuesday evening which is both popular and great fun.

Very cosy place with good selection of drinks and food. Apparently chicken wing are pretty hot but very tasty. Sunday roast was great with but portion and staff was very friendly. Definitely coming back

Nice place, turned up for dinner, at 8pm staff told me kitchen was closed, could not even order for hungry kids. Bit strange on a Saturday night.

The St Albans Organ Theatre is an intimate venue that features a collection of self-playing mechanical musical instruments. The museum is mostly from the 1930s and 1950s, and it's a hidden gem in St Albans. The museum offers amazing afternoon tea and a demonstration of some of the wonderful old Wurlitzers among others. This is definitely worth a visit!
Had a lovely afternoon at the Mechanical Instrument Christmas Special at the theatre.🌲
Sid N — Google review
Fantastic afternoon, with some fantastic music machines and great hosts. Family friendly. Will definitely go again.
Fraser G — Google review
Always a welcoming place to visit. I was there recently for an AGM for MOOS & the volunteer staff couldn't have been more helpful. For those who've never been before, if you like mechanical music, you're in for a treat!
Robert W — Google review
A real hidden gem. Run by volunteers who have an incredible knowledge. Open on a Saturday (for an organ concert on the Wurlitzer) and a Sunday (for a tour of the instruments to hear them all) once a month. But really suitable for children but great for adults.
John A — Google review
A most enjoyable afternoon, but, the talking by the staff in reception, whilst the commentator in the hall was talking, was a distraction. Perhaps the doors to the hall should be closed so they could still have their chat?
John B — Google review
It was an enjoyable concert although I expected classical organ music like Bach's. So I enjoyed the very last music 'Amazing grace' the most. I wish there would have been more church music or classical music. The coffe provided tasted exceptionally good!
Obesub L — Google review
Very special place. Not particularly impressive from the outside (think warehouse) but the magic lies within. I attended a Silent Film Concert, showing Messrs Chaplin, Keston, Laurel & Hardy, accompanied on piano by the excellent Keith Nichols. You are surrounded by organ history and memories gone by and there are both rare and familiar pieces. Organ Concerts are monthly, as well as other one-off and seasonal events run to preserve these wonderful pieces. I'll be back!

The Alban Arena is a vibrant cultural hub in St Albans, offering a diverse range of events throughout the year. Visitors can enjoy special events such as the Peace Doves art installation and the impressive Alban Pilgrimage, which features a procession of carnival puppets and re-enactments of historical events.
I always look forward to shows here! Drinks prices are very reasonable, as are the ticket prices and the staff are all very friendly and welcoming, this time round the visit was for the rock orchestra and as ever the show was stunning!
Alex — Google review
Good location Stage was big with ok lighting, too much blue made it hard to see the act. Sound was good but the in house soundmen should have had more brass. Once again the bar couldn't cope with the amount of people attending the gig. Security ushered people out very quickly after the show. Would attend again but unfortunately would expect the same next time
Clare — Google review
Very accessible with the adjacent car park being just a minute walk. Bar staff were friendly and efficient. The view appears to be good from all parts of the theatre. The seats and general amenities are starting to look a little tired but overall I had a good experience.

Wizard of Oz, Brilliant arts - What a great show this team literally out do there self's every year. This is my all time favourite show and I felt like I was 6 again when I first watched it. Cast was amazing and loved the costumes a great retake on a very popular show. Well done everyone you all deserved those standing ovations 👏

Another great night at the Alban Arena. Comfy seating. We were on off to one side so got a slight neck ache from looking slightly sideways for two hours. Decent bar for interval drinks and snacks.

Nestled in the heart of St Albans, Vintry Garden is a hidden gem that offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. This tranquil oasis features numerous benches where visitors can sit back with a coffee and enjoy stunning views of the iconic St Albans Cathedral. With its lush greenery and towering trees providing ample shade during warmer months, this garden invites quiet reflection and relaxation.
Nice garden, not too many flowers in late winter, but must be a good cool place during summers
Manthan R — Google review
The garden has beautiful spots to take pictures of the landscape and cathedral. It's quite busy so I wouldn't go there to enjoy some peace and quiet but maybe read a book or listen to a podcast.
Nonhlie E — Google review
Some reviewers here appear to have mistakenly reviewed the wrong place, judging by the pictures they’ve posted! So to clarify ... this is a walled garden lying in the shadows of St Albans Cathedral - not the walled beer garden of a nearby bar! This garden is part of the cathedral grounds, and back in the 14th Century the monks cultivated this land, turning it into a fruitful vineyard - hence the origin of its name. Ancient oaks and yews looks down on the many benches where you can sit, relax and listen to the wind blowing through their leaves. Mulberry, lavender and rosemary bushes add colour and fragrance to this calming oasis. Despite being so close to the High Street, it feels private and secluded. A Christmas Market occupies this space in winter but, for me, I much prefer it when it’s calm and tranquil.
David S — Google review
A lovely place of calm within the city. Great for picnics.
Claire S — Google review
A nice little find right up close to the gardens near the cafe. A wonderful historical story here and worth the visit as you pass by from the shops.
ONwoods U — Google review
Lovely green place, Benches, lawns and lots of trees. Good place to eat a packed lunch. Quite well used by people eating sandwiches or meeting friends. And some great views of the Cathedral as well. The space is walled and is a bit hidden away even in the centre of the town.
David B — Google review
Lovely food and great staff. My eldest son has allergies, and their policies and understanding of this was excellent. Made us feel at ease to eat. 5 stars!
E W — Google review
It's a walked garden and a nice place to sit outside and have an Al fresco lunch. Convenient for St Alban's market with its street food stalls and many and diverse cafés doing takeaways. Take your own camping stool or sit on the grass. It's right next to the Cathedral which has a public access toilet.

St Peter's Church in St Albans is a serene oasis nestled in the vibrant city center, just a short walk from the lively Market Place and High Street. With origins tracing back to around 948 AD, this historic church was initially established to welcome pilgrims heading to the shrine of St Alban at the nearby Cathedral and Abbey. The church boasts stunning architecture and well-maintained grounds that invite visitors for quiet reflection or leisurely exploration.
Beautiful historical site. you can have the tour, surrounded by greenery where one can enjoy the afternoon picnic or quiet time alone. Allow yourself enough time to walk around the grounds
Lady L — Google review
Amazing and beautiful Church and Church grounds. Everything about this Church is wonderful, pretty and peaceful. Wonderful place to pray or to visit for a trip. The grounds are well kept and looked after and the inside is stunning, pure beautiful Church. It is open i think most days so you really should pay this place a visit as you won't be disappointed. The Grounds have many old graves and there is also a garden of hope which looks beautiful also. Some lovely big old tress in here that look large and lovely.
ONwoods U — Google review
It is believed that the original Anglo-Saxon church, which would have been made of wood, was founded here around AD 948. This church, together with St Stephen's and St Michael's churches, was built at about that time to receive pilgrims and to prepare them for their visit to the shrine of St Alban within what is now St Albans Abbey. These three churches stand on the three main roads into St Albans. Whilst nothing remains of the original wooden structure, the church assumed its current form during the 13th century, with subsequent changes being necessary through rebuilding to address structural instability. The current church is beautifully proportioned and lovingly maintained. Trees consume ancient shrines in the lovely grounds which, themselves, have a lovely, peaceful feel to them.

Verulamium Lake, nestled within the expansive Verulamium Park in St Albans, is a delightful spot for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Spanning 100 acres of lush greenery, this park features charming ponds connected by quaint bridges. The lake itself offers a picturesque setting that attracts both local ducks and curious seagulls.
Beautiful park in St. Albans. It is host to the Roman wall remains. In wet and rainy weather there is flooding of the lake over the walkways. By currently since there hasn’t been any rain for a while it is ok. The water quality looks good compared to past years. Lots of bird life to enjoy and fish to see.
Ben H — Google review
A beautiful place for a nice family walk, with stacks of wildlife variety. Also, just a short walk away you can find St Albans Cathedral, which is home to resident Peregrines, which have nested there the last two years - Furthermore, if you are lucky you may see a kingfisher along the small river Ver running alongside the lake. The reason this is a 4 not a 5 star is that it sometimes gets very crowded, and also the lake can get disgustingly dirty at points.
Benji — Google review
Been coming here since I was very small (most likely around 20-25 years) learnt to ride my bike here as well. Really beautiful park to walk around, loads of space for activities and in the warmer weather a picnic, currently (25th March 2024) there is a large area of the park near the lake that is flooded, publice toilets are closed so you will need to use the toilets at the entrance (car park). Love having a walk around here and the café there is great for a coffee and food, it is dog friendly. There's a pub at the top left of the park which is a beautiful Old pub with loads of history. The play area is great for the kids (of course) would have loved it as a kid. Overall a great park!
Bradley P — Google review
A beautiful lake with so much wildlife, swans nesting in full view and when I visited there were so many ducklings. A perfect day out with a picnic or just a simple dog walk. The lake walk is easily accessible for prams or wheelchair users. There are plenty of cafes and ice cream vans dotted around so it’s never too far for a refreshment. There’s also a park and splash park which is free next to the lake for kids.
Jon S — Google review
The park is quite large, it contains the Roman wall and Mosaic and it offers stunning views of the cathedral. There are paid parking facilities at the entrances and toilets in the park. The walk around the park is pleasant and there are information plaques scattered around showing the history of the area. I visited in autumn and in summer and both times it was a pleasure. The walkway around the park is shaded which I appreciate!
Ionut N — Google review
Early March 2024. The paths both ends of the lake are flooded. The section of the park between Kingsbury Mill and the lake is virtually inaccessible without wellies (go around via the Roman Museum) Public toilets are closed (the building is flooded in any case!)
Rhodri E — Google review
A beautiful lake. It's very calming just sit around this. Really enjoyed sitting and listening to the sound of water, birds and trees around it.
Rishi — Google review
The wettest place around. An abundance of wetness with lots of opportunities to get wets. The geese, swans, ducks and small children were loving in. A nearby river adds to the overall wetness. Freezes in the winter, so swap wetness for frozen.
