The Museum of Human Evolution in Burgos is a fascinating paleontological museum showcasing remarkable human fossils discovered at the Atapuerca archaeological site. The museum features exhibitions on early human intelligence, Charles Darwin's work, and educational displays on the process of human evolution. Visitors can also take a shuttle bus from the museum to explore the Sierra de Atapuerca archaeological site, known for its caves, fossils, and stone tools.
I like the building, it's modern, bright, open, it feels good to take a scientific walk in a light and bright atmosphere, in a city such as old style like Burgos. It gives us a bit of hope. And Mei likes " the treasure map", it really helps the kids get through the visit without getting too bored. Thanks!

Simply spectacular. Most of the exhibits (apart from the very top floor) are bilingual (Spanish & English) whilst some of them are interactive. The original fossils are simply stunning. We highly recommend that you take the trip to the archeological site too & see some if the demonstrations. It was a first class day...

A very interesting and educational museum for all ages. One can learn a lot about the history of human civilization. Some exhibits are digital and interactive, which makes the experience even more engaging. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. Definitely a must visit if you are in Burgos!

Incredible, elegant and creative display that synthesizes a ton of wild material. English translations of about 90% of the exhibits. Highlight is definitely the French-made models of hominids. Many of the items on display are replicas, but the replica quality is high.

I think at least a full morning or afternoon is needed as there is so much incredible information and displays to take in.

To find this incredible museum in a fairly small city was a revelation. The displays were informative and inspirational, you must visit Burgos to see this museum and all the other wonderful places within its vicinity!

Arco de Santa María is a medieval gate that was restored in the 16th century and features intricate carved figures. It has been repurposed for art exhibitions and cultural events. The gate is one of the twelve entrances to the city from the Middle Ages, showcasing its historical significance.
Very scenic place including river, walking area , park and cathedral. All together with Gate of Santa Maria makes thus place kind a magical. You need to see it yourself to appreciate the views and beauty of area. Don’t forget about Italian cream on the right side !

We traveled from USA. From Madrid airport we rented a car and drove to here. It’s spectacular and very impressive architecture, the Arch of Santa María is one of the most emblematic monuments of the city of Burgos. This is in the autonomous community of Castile and León, Spain. It is one of the twelve ancient access gates that the Burgos wall had in the Middle Ages. It connects the Santa María Bridge, over the Arlanzón River, with the Plaza del Rey San Fernando, where the cathedral is located.
Carolina J — Google review
What an entrance this Arch makes. I have seen many arches and this is one of the best. The historical detailing and completeness of this arch is impressive. Its location is just across a short walking bridge, where a lovely walking path runs parallel to the city wall. It leads right into the Cathedral square and makes for a fantastic lead up to the Cathedral. Also makes.for a great meeting place as it is hard to miss.

Super nice, including the bridge behind it. Worth a visit.

Burgos Cathedral is a magnificent Gothic structure in Burgos, Spain, known for its rich history and stunning architecture. It played a significant role in introducing the Gothic style to the country during the Middle Ages. The cathedral features 38 altarpieces, numerous chapels, and intricate religious artwork. It also serves as the final resting place of El Cid, adding to its historical importance.
I echo everyone else 's comments - this is simply a beautiful cathedral that you must visit! Download the audio BEFORE you arrive at the Cathedral! We were able to have Mass in a side chapel. In addition, there are 21 side chapels, each more beautiful than the other. The architecture and the stonework and the various carvings are simply exquisite. It is hard to believe what stonemasons and woodcarvers built hundreds of years ago with simple tools. We did not take the tour- due to time constraints- enjoy the grandeur of this magnificent cathedral. Construction on the Cathedral began in 1221 and was completed in 1567. It is a comprehensive example. The Cathedral of Saint Mary of Burgos is a Catholic church dedicated to the Virgin Mary located in the historical center of the Spanish city of Burgos. Its official name is the Holy Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica Church of St Mary of Burgos. It all began in the year 1080, when Alfonso VI, who was king of the ancient kingdom of Castile, ordered the construction of a Romanesque cathedral in the city of Burgos: the Church of Santa María de Burgos. In 1219, this church hosted a ceremony of great importance for the kingdom of Castile, the wedding of the then King Ferdinand III of Castile and the Germanic princess Beatrice of Swabia (daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II of Swabia Hohenstaufen).

The Burgos Cathedral is located in the historical centre of the Spanish city of the same name. Construction on the Cathedral began in 1221 and was completed in 1567. It is a comprehensive example of the evolution of Gothic style, with the entire history of Gothic art exhibited in its superb architecture and unique collection of art, including paintings, choir stalls, reredos, tombs, and stained-glass windows. Burgos Cathedral has the distinction of being the only Cathedral in Spain to be designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site independently from the historic center of the city it is located in. The visit of the Cathedral lasts 1 hour approx. It is very large, with many small chapels. It is worth visiting slowly. Entry fee at time of writing / visiting : from 10 Euros Free Entry: Entry to the cathedral is free on Tuesday afternoons between 4:30 pm and 6:30 pm in the summer (and 4:30 pm to 6 pm in the winter). One of the richest cathedrals I’ve ever seen! The intricate art and sculptures inside are simply amazing. There is a free audio guide that you can access via your phone. It is hard to listen though while also taking in the beauty of each chapel and artwork at the same time. 😅 This is a must-visit in Burgos!
Liza B — Google review
Espectacular cathedral with a fast and efficient check out service tickets. No matter your believes it’s a must visit. The details of all of the walls and structure is impressive. You would like to spend like at least an hour and a half to enjoy all the places inside.
Carolina J — Google review
This may be one of the most beautiful churches I have visited. St Peters in Rome may be grander but the Burgos Cathedral has so many beautiful chapels inside it, each distinct. Some of the chapels are humongous, bigger than small churches. Burgos Cathedral is awesome, a must see!
Gregory D — Google review
Huge building. We were to late to visit,as we arrived only in the evening. Impressive building and probably worth to visit also inside. Tickets can be purchased during the day at the entrance. The large squares around the Cathedral are pleasant for a drink or to stroll around with an ice cream.
Christy D — Google review
Burgos Cathedral is one of Spain’s most impressive Gothic landmarks and a true architectural marvel. From the moment you approach its elaborate façade and soaring spires, the grandeur is unmistakable. Inside, the cathedral is equally breathtaking, with richly decorated chapels, vaulted ceilings, and intricately carved choir stalls that reflect centuries of craftsmanship and devotion. A particular highlight is the tomb of El Cid and his wife, placed prominently beneath the central dome—an evocative tribute to one of Spain’s legendary historical figures. The Golden Staircase, the elaborate main altarpiece, and the stunning dome above the crossing all add to the cathedral’s majesty. The visit includes access to the Cathedral Museum, which is thoughtfully integrated into several side chapels and rooms. The collection spans medieval to Renaissance periods and includes religious paintings, fine metalwork, textiles, and illuminated manuscripts. Each exhibit is well presented and offers deeper insight into the religious and artistic history of the region. The cloister provides a peaceful contrast to the main cathedral space, and its sculpted tombs add to the sense of history. Overall, Burgos Cathedral is not only a place of worship but a living museum of Gothic art and Spanish heritage. A must-see for any visitor to the city.

Casa del Cordón, also known as the Palace of the Constables of Castile, is a historic site in Burgos with significant ties to Christopher Columbus and Spain's Catholic monarchs. This 15th-century Gothic building overlooks Plaza de la Libertad and features a carved Franciscan cord at its main door, symbolizing royal occupancy.
(Translated by Google) The Palace of the Constable of Castile, the highest office after the monarchs of the time, takes its name from the Franciscan cord that adorns and encloses the heraldic shields on the main façade. It's a beautiful sight on the outside. The interior is a museum for the Caja de Burgos (Caja de Burgos). Unfortunately, however, the majestic inner courtyard is closed on weekends and holidays, as this is a branch open on weekdays.

(Translated by Google) The Casa del Cordón, in the heart of Burgos, is not just stone: it is pure history. Within its walls, one of the noblest chapters in Spanish history was written. Here, beneath its Gothic arch adorned with the Franciscan cord, the Catholic Monarchs received Christopher Columbus after his second voyage to the New World. It was in this house that the destiny of an empire that would forever change the face of the Earth was confirmed. That Spain believed in itself, built cathedrals, charted routes to the unknown, and dared to dream of the infinite. Today, one contemplates this jewel and feels both pride and sadness. Because while those stones withstand the centuries, we, their heirs, seem to have forgotten what greatness meant. There is no longer vision or courage; only a country that argues over trivialities and disowns its past. The Casa del Cordón remains there, firm, silent, reminding us of who we were and, above all, how little we are becoming. It is the stony testimony of an immortal Spain, in contrast to a society that has exchanged legacy for mediocrity and glory for oblivion.

(Translated by Google) This magnificent 15th-century building, built for the Constables of Castile, has been the scene of several major historical events: here the Royal Navy welcomed Columbus upon his return from his second voyage; the annexation of the Kingdom of Navarre to the Kingdom of Castile and León was signed; and so on. You can see the courtyard upon entering during office hours, or from the outside of the former Caja de Burgos shopping center. With the plundering of the former Bankia by La Caixa, now also in Burgos, as in other cities in Castile and Madrid, this bank, supported by the political powers, has practically gotten away with this formidable building, which should return to its rightful owners: the city of Burgos. The Cartuja de Miraflores in Burgos is a stunning Gothic palace-turned-monastery that dates back to the 1400s. Once a royal residence, it now stands as one of the most captivating monuments from the late European Gothic era. The monastery houses remarkable tombs of Isabel la Catolica's parents, crafted by Gil de Siloe, and features an ornate gold altarpiece brought from Christopher Columbus' second trip to the Americas.

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Castillo de Burgos is a medieval fortress in Burgos, Spain. It was built as a defensive structure in the year 884 by count Diego Porcelos and played an important role in the Reconquista, which was a historical process of Christian Kingdoms seeking to control the Muslim rule. Today, the ruins of the castle stand at 75m above the city and have been inhabited since prehistory.
There isn't much left however it is interesting to read the history and imagine. Looking down the well was so interesting. Excellent views of the city and the cathedral. A nice walkway set up throughout for an organized visit with lots of signage to explain each area. The visit is free! We drove and there is plenty of parking. For people not on crutches, it is a close walk, with a climb albeit. If you visit the old wall ot is at the top of the stairs. Exiting the Castillo about 100m to the left on the other side of the road is a mirador with perhaps a better view of the cathedral. Definitely worth the visit to understand the history of the city and the region.
Karen D — Google review
Not much to see since it is closed for renovation or reconstruction. Walking around the big walls leave plenty of room for the imagination to wonder how big the castle was back in the day. I hope that the reconstruction can deliver what once stood there.

Interesting historical ruins initially from 884, in 1736 destroyed by fire and rebuilt but in 1813 destroyed by the defeated French. Some panoramic views and a fascinating well to provide water. I feel more could be done to make the site more enlightening for tourists.

When visiting Burgos, Spain, make sure to include Mirador Del Castillo in your itinerary. This popular attraction offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and its surroundings from the top of Burgos Hill. Located at Castillo de Burgos, a medieval castle with remaining walls dating back to 884 AD, this viewpoint provides an excellent vantage point for planning your exploration of the city. While at the castle, take time to appreciate its historical significance as a defensive structure.
A fascinating view across Burgos rooftops as far as the 2000m Sierras to the south east. Thee a cafeteria and a very helpful diection freeze showing td main point of interest. You can continue thewalk along the foot of the castle to the old city walls to the Moorish Esteban gate and back round to the atart by the Abba Burgos Hotel Look out for small hlizards and grasshoppers along the way.

Great view of Burgos city and its magnificent cathedral. Best of all - it is free! There are many steps to go up (not wheelchair friendly, no lift/escalator) but worth it. There is a cafe/restaurant in the mirador but it was closed when I was there (Friday, 5:30pm).

Saint Nicolás of Bari church is a must-see in Burgos, offering visitors a unique experience to learn about the city's emblematic monuments. The church is located near the Castle of Burgos and provides stunning white stone carvings inside, making it stand out from other highly embellished churches in the area. Additionally, visitors can explore the small museum and sacristy at the back of the church as part of their entry fee.
Small church near the Cathedral. Highly recommend. Entry fee is €2/pax, no discount for pilgrim. Worth it. Looks simple and unassuming, but stunning white stone carving inside. I find it a refreshing “break from all the Baroque and highly embellished churches seen along the Camino Frances so far. There’s also a small museum & sacristy at the back of the church (inclusive of fee).

Interesting museum, but needs an update. There is no restaurant to sit or shop to buy a card. I was happy to rest on one of the chairs. Also everything is in Spanish, no english used. This former church, now transformed into a museum of altarpieces from the Diocese of Burgos, is a hidden gem. The building itself is magnificent, and the collection includes remarkable altarpieces from various towns across the region, representing different artistic periods. In addition to the altarpieces, the museum also features small statues and a collection of religious goldsmithing. Definitely worth a visit!

This seems to no longer be a working church, but is instead used as a makeshift museum for religious artefacts rescued from around the Burgos province. There is an information video about the restoration work carried out on the pieces brought and housed here, after their previous buildings had fallen into disrepair. Again it is one of the four churches you can currently visit (Burgos cathedral included) for 8 euros.

The only drawback I have are the comments from people who do not understand that selling pasta and similar products does not give them the status of a regular store. It is a place of prayer. The rest is secondary. Therefore paying by card and finding the store closed is not important. The pillars and the walls resemble the historical nature of the building. Make sure to check the opening hours, since it closes in early afternoon (around 2pm). You can take pictures in the internal lobby only, and the upper two floors are not open to the public. Still highly recommend to stop by while visiting Burgos.

We have been at mass at 12:30 p.m. today was Sunday and it has been unbearable, I have never been so cold in my life, I understand that they don't turn on the heating (more than understanding it I accept it) but that I go out into the cold air means for me to return, it is more than embarrassing to leave there contracted. Not like that without things. (Original) Buenas tardes. 36Palacio de la Isla

Historical landmark
The Palacio de la Isla, situated in Burgos, Spain, was constructed in 1883 by Juan Muguiro y Casi. This romantic-style palace with neo-Gothic influences became an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1942. The palace houses the Centro de Conocimiento Origenes del Espanol, which contains over 25,000 cards documenting Latin inscriptions from the Roman Age on the Iberian Peninsula.
Highly recommend! Free and the guy at the front was so nice to show me around. There was a poet exhibit from the 50s. I love how accessible this is to the public, and full of history.

We were just wandering and came across this place. It's pretty cool just to walk through for 30 minutes. It was originally a Summer home but used by Franco for a time. Now it houses material regarding the origin and study of Spanish/Espanol. Books as old as 900 on display. Staff is cool too.

(Translated by Google) A building with a unique and carefully curated architecture that gives it a stately and elegant appearance. Although its current uses are very different from those of the not-so-distant past, it's a shame that it doesn't even have a sad sign indicating that during the Civil War it was the residence of General Francisco Franco and that an extremely momentous event took place there, such as the preparation of the final war report of April 1, 1939.

(Translated by Google) The Palacio de la Isla is one of those places in Burgos that surprises and captivates in equal measure. Many are unaware of the great historical importance of this building, a witness to key moments in Spain's contemporary history, which today still retains all its stately charm surrounded by a privileged natural setting. But if anything deserves to be highlighted above its beauty and historical value, it is the friendliness and helpfulness of its staff. From the moment you arrive, the treatment is warm, attentive, and professional; always willing to help and make the visit or stay as pleasant as possible. A place that combines history, elegance, and human warmth. Without a doubt, a Burgos gem that deserves to be better known and visited.

(Translated by Google) A huge disappointment. Absolutely nothing remains of the history of those who lived there (Franco included). Nor does anything remain of the years when she was Commissioner. There are only modern classrooms and offices, as it is the headquarters of the Institute of Castilian and Leonese Language. You can read the history online. It's not worth visiting at all. You can take a few photos of the façade and little else. It was Burgos's history, and today it's nothing 🤷🏼 (Original) Una gran decepción.
