Cathedral

Nestled in the heart of a medieval landscape, the Santa Maria Cathedral stands as a stunning testament to Gothic architecture. Often referred to as the Old Cathedral, its construction began in 1202 after a devastating fire claimed the previous church. This monumental structure features an intricately sculpted facade and soaring vaulted interiors that transport visitors back in time.
The only language available for the guided tour when I went was Spanish, but they provided audioguides in English (and French and German, if I remember correctly). The tour guide was very friendly and always made sure to give some explanation in English for me. He also answered any questions I had. The church itself is really interesting, and I recommend going up the tower especially around sundown. Better to reserve a slot for the tour in advance; mine was full on a Tuesday.
Cait C — Google review
Truely terrific place. A combination of a chruch and city walls on an uneven ground. This lead to constructual problems that have been bugged the building for ages. And then in the sixthees a desasterous decision to remove internal buttresses. in english a very good guide through the building, from underground to the tower with views over the country side. You have to make a reservation through Internet or in person. In the end they show the true colours of the building, from now to the 16th century Closed between 1400 and 16.30m Worth the trip
Jan L — Google review
We had a tour in Spanish, but with audioguide in English. We never had such a great, complete experience from enormous foundations to the roof, and everything in between. The restoration is well done. Tour guide was friendly and helpful. The Cathedral is not so over-decorated as many others in Spain, but very interesting non the less. Highly recommend tour!
Louis S — Google review
The building was closed for renovation when we visited. Beautiful architecture in a very friendly town.
Mary C — Google review
As the Cathedral is still in a period of extended restoration you have to visit with a guided tour, so the entrance fee will set you back around ten euros, unless you qualify for a concession. However the tour is detailed and exhaustive, including a trip down through its crumbling foundation pillars, then into its spectacular romanesque interior before going up to the Tower. The journey there, along a narrow ledge that overlooks the cathedral interior, before acsending up a spiral staircase, is almost as exciting as the views it offers of the surrounding city.
Stuart M — Google review
It is certainly not the prettiest or the mos architecturally inspiring cathedral in Spain. However, it has an interesting story of trying to withstand the original construction errors. Fortunately, the cathedral has been saved from an imminent collapse after the last restoration. The guided visit is super interesting, as it takes you to places that are usually not accessible to the public, including the foundations.
Daniel F — Google review
A must visit in Vitoria-Gasteiz! Guided tours are very good...best option is: Cathedrale Tour + Tower! View from there above the city is awesome! They have guided tours in English...but also audioguides in different languages! This is a sure must visit if you are in town. Check out the tours on their official site! Never had a guided tour like this...for that price...anyway in this world! The Tour ends with projection show of how the coloring of the church was ages ago...never saw something like this before...even in Rome or somewhere else! So much love and affection to history combined with modern technology!
Don E — Google review
The work done of restoration of this Cathedral is amazing. It seems that construction was not very well done, and during the time the attempts to repair it were not very successfully also. From a few year now, was done a huge work to understand was was wrong and what exactly had to be done to save the building.

Cultural center
Artium Museum, located in Vitoria, is a modern and contemporary art museum that opened its doors in 2002. It boasts an extensive collection of over 1,500 works from the 1970s to the present, featuring Basque, Spanish, and international artists. The museum's focus on Basque authors and artists from the mid-1950s onwards sets it apart as a significant cultural institution in northern Spain.
aka - Museum of Contemporary Art of the Basque Country. Permanent collection holds works by numerous artists, including Eduardo Chillida, Manolo Millares, Pablo Palazuelo. The museum offers free entrance options (e.g. afternoons). The exhibition called Adına, Oteiza, Palazuelo - Shaping the Transcendental was my favorite!
Oguzhan Y — Google review
The entrance was free, and the lady at the reception was very kind. We had visited this museum a year ago, and we really enjoyed the exhibitions back then. However, today we didn’t particularly like the four different exhibitions on display. This place has a lot of potential to host great works and showcase new artists. The fact that entry is free in the afternoons and on Sundays is fantastic, as it allows access to culture for those who may not have much money. I still recommend this museum because it’s likely you’ll find exhibitions that suit your taste in the future. Just make sure to check the current exhibitions before visiting.
Tom — Google review
Beyond the city's free museums, this contemporary art space provides an enjoyable atmosphere for relaxation and reflection. Its expansive exhibits make it a fair choice for families or those seeking a peaceful cultural experience.

I really enjoyed this museum, especially as entrance is free/donation. Just wish it had the works by Picasso, Dali, or Miro that I had read about

Last visit : August 2014 Beautiful place to go for a walk, there are many beautiful sculptures there. The scenery there is wonderful, there are different plants and the garden is located in the center of city, close to the main tourist attractions, historical places, restaurants and shops.

Such a lovely park to visit . There are plenty of benches dotted along the pathways of this lovely well maintained park , I was and am especially impressed that the grass is not over cut allowing daisy’s and buttercups etc to flourish and they look so pretty . There are cafes in the park along with an ice cream van , there is a lovely bandstand close to the cafes . This is a lovely place to chill and so close to the town , practically in it .

The Museum of Fine Arts of Alava is a great museum located in Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital of the Basque Country. It displays paintings from the 18th to 20th centuries by Spanish and Basque artists. The museum is worth visiting for its impressive collection of art alone, but it also has some beautiful gardens which make it a pleasant place to spend a few hours.

El Portalón is a renowned restaurant in Vitoria-Gasteiz, housed in a historic building dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries. The rustic brick rooms with wood beams create an ambiance that transports visitors to another era. This establishment is celebrated for its traditional regional dishes, including natural asparagus from Navarra, exquisite fish and meat preparations, and crispy pork trotters filled with foie gras.
El Portalon offers a unique ambiance, full of charm and character, making it the perfect setting for an enjoyable meal. The staff were exceptionally attentive, ensuring that every detail was taken care of. We had the txuleta, roasted peppers, and octopus—each dish was prepared to perfection. The dessert at the end was something special, a delightful surprise to conclude our meal. Highly recommended to visit!
T K — Google review
This restaurant has a unique and special atmosphere. The staff is beyond kind and attentive. We had the roasted bell peppers, roasted cod and grilled artichoke. They have a few vegetarian options too. If you’re in Vitoria, this is definitely worth a stop for lunch or dinner.
Minh P — Google review
We had an amazing dinner during our stay in Vitoria. We got some hammon as starter and it was delicious. Later followed by two massive steaks with potatoes and peppers. The meat was cooked really well and the quality was honestly great. Desserts were good, not amazing but typical so just not really our taste. Only “bad thing” (our fault for not looking at the website) is the fact that if you want the full menu you have to book it at least two days in advance so just be prepared.
Riccardo C — Google review
I really liked the medieval style of the restaurant, the staff was friendly but very slow. I ordered the octopus dish and it was good, nothing special though. As a main we opted for the turbot (rodaballo), and this is where things started going wrong. Firstly, the waiter was confused about the dish and wasn’t able to answer my questions. Personally, I believe that waiters should have a good understanding of the menu. I wanted to order the whole fish, I was told it would be a fillet which isn’t an issue. We receive our octopus, and a while after that one of the waiters informs me that in the end they’d be able to do the whole fish, meaning that all this time they haven’t even started with cooking the fish. We had to wait for AT LEAST an hour, waiters were very politely kept telling me that it’s a “complicated” dish and that there were some issues in the kitchen. Eventually after having already lost my appetite, we are given the fish. Was it horrible? No. But was it worth 80€ and an hour of my time? Absolutely not. Our lovely day trip in Vitoria unfortunately ended with us being annoyed and feeling robbed.
D — Google review
The food was great. The bread was amazing, they make it there. The service was okay. Very recommended if you come to Vitoria.
Karla M — Google review
the place is amazing and full of history. the food is outstanding!! I think the service is a bit slow but it's such a nice place, come with time and it'll be good
M T — Google review
Thirteen of us had supper here tonight. Not only was the food very plentiful and of a very high standard but the service was over and above what we might have expected. The atmosphere is old world charm but everything else is very much up to date and the chefs know exactly what they are doing. When in Vitoria again we will not hesitate to come and enjoy another visit to El Portalón. We can not recommend this establishment more highly.

(Translated by Google) I visited it on the day of the San Prudencio Pilgrimage. Unbeknownst to me, I saw large crowds heading in the same direction. They explained what was happening to me, and I accompanied them on the ascent to the green meadow where the Basilica is located. It's comforting to see a large number of people, groups, or families, spending the day there. Another thing I loved was seeing how perfectly clean everything was, with not a single piece of paper or plastic rolling around due to the pilgrimage. I was able to walk around the Basilica building, but it was impossible to enter due to the crowds trying to get inside. I have one more visit, without the pilgrimage, to see the inside.

We got a spontaneous tour of the museum when we came around, it was interesting and informative. The tradition itself and the craftsmanship that went into the creation of the lanterns are extraordinary. The volunteers both inside and outside the lanterns hall were extremely friendly. Sadly we had only about half an hour, I'd have loved to stay longer!

(Translated by Google) Interesting to see, you can see it quickly because all the lanterns are in the same room. I was curious to visit it, but the man showing it wasn't very impressed with where I came from (his expression changed) and explained everything quickly and without much enthusiasm. After I finished, I met a woman who must also be showing it, and she was much more pleasant to deal with and shared some interesting facts. I'd give it five stars if I were to give it a try, because it's certainly a different experience and a unique place, and I'm sure she'll explain everything very well.

Palacio Zulueta, a stunning house-hotel built in 1903 by architect Fausto Iñiguez de Betolaza, is a must-see when exploring the southwest of the Old Town. The palace is surrounded by beautiful gardens that are free to visit. Although the interior cannot be accessed, the exterior and its surroundings are incredibly picturesque. Once belonging to a former slaver, it was later given to the city by his daughter.
With its beautiful architecture and charming garden it's well worth the visit. Unfortunately it's not open to the public.

The location is convenient, within walking distance to the old hill with its bar areas. The reception and eating room are cozy and beautiful. Although the views from the spacious rooms overlook roofs of lower houses and front buildings, the accommodations are comfortable with pleasant amenities.

I was here a month ago and the elevator made a horrendous sound that many people were complaining about but the staff said that the elevator technician was coming soon. Fast forward 1 month later my office booked the same hotel but a different room and the elevator is the same. The noise is a screeching sound that can be heard all over the hotel.

This was a basic hotel that served it's purpose. The staff were night and the rooms were clean. The AC in the building was central, so don't rely on a cold room on a hot day, otherwise I had no complaints. The only reason this isn't a 5 star review is because this was not a 5 star hotel. It was a very good 2-3 star.

(Translated by Google) The good thing is that there are not many people. On sunny afternoons it is ideal to take a book and read on one of the benches there. The only negative thing is the lack of bike parking spots. Maybe scarcity is not the word, because there are enough of them, but they are still insufficient. They are always busy and have to be tied to a post or the fence that surrounds the garden, which is uncomfortable and unsightly. Putting in about 20 more bike parking spaces would help a lot.

(Translated by Google) I left a few months ago after 10 years as a member, tired of the market-style overcrowding of the fitness room as a result of its €35/month promotion for young people. While older members religiously pay a premium rate. Apart from the insult to the most senior members, from that rate you expect what Bakh was 10 years ago. High availability of the room's equipment and a relaxed atmosphere. Not having to wait and beg for machines or weights. In the end I left after thinking about this environment, I went to a low cost that paid less and received the same. Now I pay €38/month at a well-known LowCost gym chain in the same market. The only thing I miss is the social part and the pool, although from what I see in the comments...it's too much to miss. The day they open a Metropolitan in Vitoria...I have tried it and it is premium...what an exodus of members awaits you. Not even the most Baskonista will stay and I will be there first to enroll (Original) Me fui hace unos meses después de 10 años de socio cansado de la masificación estilo mercado de la sala fitness como consecuencia de su promoción para jóvenes de 35 €/mes. (Translated by Google) The gym's state in the afternoons is a disgrace. After 4:00 PM, it's impossible to work out: all the machines are occupied, nothing is free, and if you go at 7:00 PM, the situation is exactly the same. On top of that, even if you pay the premium rate, you often have to park outside because there's no space in the parking lot. The weight room is quite messy, with the machines packed tightly together trying to make the most of the space, but all they achieve is making you bump into others while you work out. When the calisthenics students arrive, it seems like the gym is just for them: they take up everything, with the music blasting, and there are bound to be other rooms to fit them in instead of mixing them upstairs with the rest of the staff. The problem is the same in the non-premium locker room: always full, not enough space, and on top of that, several lockers are broken, so I often can't even leave my things. They're admitting a lot of new people, but the gym is small and can't hold much. I've gone several times in the afternoon and had to leave because I couldn't train at all. The gym is small, poorly organized, and the management leaves a lot to be desired. If the situation doesn't change/improve, I'll end up leaving.

(Translated by Google) Incredible and comprehensive facilities. I was pleasantly surprised by all the amenities. (Translated by Google) Premium facilities are what they sell you. The reality is that low-cost prices for those under 30, everyone else has to pay as if they were a premium facility. The gym has machines with cracked pads and also cracked weight benches. The locker room is poorly cleaned. Occasionally, the showers don't work. And you pay for parking, but many days you'll arrive and it's full, so you pay for it but have to park on the street. In August, the spa and indoor pools are closed for 15 days, and if you're lucky, they don't close part of the gym for renovations. Of course, you still pay the full monthly premium fee. In other words, the rate you pay is premium, but the service you receive isn't. The best thing about Bakh is the employees.

(Translated by Google) I've been a member for a long time, and unfortunately, I'm increasingly disappointed. While long-time members continue to pay the highest rates, they constantly launch promotions for new members, with no benefits for those of us who have been here for years. The atmosphere has also worsened: many new members don't respect the rules, leave equipment everywhere, and don't pick up anything, which makes it difficult to work out normally. Parents with small children enter the premium locker room, which is supposed to be for adults only, which causes discomfort for those of us who want a quiet space that's commensurate with the price we pay. And parking is impossible in the afternoons. Many people leave their cars there without using the gym, and finding a spot is an odyssey. The only real positive are the instructors: attentive, professional, and always giving 100%. They are the best part of the gym. It's a shame the rest aren't up to their level. I loved everything I saw, although I would have appreciated a little more lighting in some display cases. From the Iruña-Veleia site, I would highlight: the Lady of Iruña, the milestone, the Veleia inscription (you'd expect it to be larger), the market measuring weights, and other sites such as those from the thermal baths of ancient Suestatium (now Arkaia). It's located in a beautiful building that also houses the playing card museum. I highly recommend it. Admission is free.

(Translated by Google) Honestly, we were not surprised by the arches. Except for the access it has to the upper part of them that takes us to the famous Celedón. I understand that on cold and rainy days it will be a very appropriate place to take shelter, as happens in other cities that have portalillos. However, it is a place of passage and it is worth seeing (Original) Sinceramente no nos sorprendio los arquillos.

Historical landmark
Nestled in the heart of Vitoria, the Palacio de los Álava-Esquivel stands as a testament to the city's rich history and architectural beauty. Constructed in 1488 and later renovated in 1535 and 1865, this magnificent palace boasts Neo-Gothic features that add to its charm. Visitors can admire its two distinct facades—one gracing Calle Herreria and another on Zapateria, which is notably the older of the two.
(Translated by Google) Beautiful palace, one of the most beautiful in Vitoria even though it has not yet been restored. Apparently there is already an agreement to do so, Hopefully they will leave it completely renovated soon and you can visit the interior, it will gain a lot, both the palace and the area, which is already of a very high standard.

Casa Maturana-Verástegui is a stunning palace house nestled in the historic heart of Vitoria. This architectural gem dates back to the 16th century, built during a time when the Catholic Monarchs sought to restore peace after the tumultuous War of the Bands. Originally, this site was home to a significant medieval arms forge that met its end in a fire.

It has been restored on the outside, allowing you to see the original interior of the palace through the windows and glass doors. You can see the entire interior structure of wooden beams and cobbled floors. At night it has lighting that allows you to continue seeing everything. Without a doubt, beautiful. Cordon´s House is a historic building located on the lively Cuchilleria street, where the Catholic Monarchs once stayed. Today, it serves socio-cultural purposes and is open for visits. The vault on the first floor is particularly eye-catching. This pleasant place was also where Pope Adrian VI spent the night, and while it no longer offers accommodation or meals, it's free to enter.
Do not expect something long, it is more of a walk inside the building to enjoy some pieces of medieval artworks and takes around 10-15 minutes.
