Art museum
Museums
The Museo del Barro is a unique museum that showcases a diverse collection of Latin American and Paraguayan art, including pottery, ancient relics, contemporary art, indigenous artifacts, and rural crafts. With over 4,000 artworks and artifacts on display, the museum offers an immersive journey through 500 years of Paraguay's history. Visitors can explore intricate lace weavings from the 18th century alongside well-preserved examples of Franciscan religious art.
Amazing museum! Better than some state museums. Visit it , if you want to know about Paraguayan/guarani material culture.
Ieva O — Google review
Well worth stopping by, full of interesting Paraguan art, from all cultures in the country. Lots and lots to see
Alex D — Google review
Very, very nice! Quillermo explained us many things and is a wonderful ‘host’ and artist himself! Many thanks, we had a wonderful time!
Remco V — Google review
Great place with a lot of culture in Asunción, amazing pictures and old newspapers that showcase the history of Paraguay. Furthermore we can find a rich collection of different native tribes and religious artifacts and more
David C — Google review
Okay museum, rather disappointed after all the hype. Great pre-Columbian collection, probably the best in the southern cone and very well labeled. Large collection of colonial religious art, but very poorly labeled. (If interested in art from the Jesuit and Franciscan missions in paraguay, much better to visit the Sacred Art Museum downtown, beautifully done.) The contemporary collections were disappointing. The indigenous collections just seem like tourist trinkets commissioned for the museum. (If interested in indigenous artifacts, much better to visit the ethnographic museum downtown - it has one of the best collections in all of LATAM.) Make sure to visit the bathrooms, which are filled with exhibits. If you only visit one museum in Asunción, I guess this one is okay. But besides pre-Columbian art, the many specialty museums downtown are better.
Josiah W — Google review
A whirlwind of South American art, from pre-Columbian to contemporary and spanning pretty much all media (sculpture, painting, textile, photographic and so on) and genres, from figurative to conceptual. The museum is not huge, but it is brimful of art objects. To me it lacks some organization of the exposition, there is no clear logical path from a room to the next and some more explanation of what's on display. I found the pre-Columbian sculpture to be the most interesting, but the overall feeling of being immersed in an ever changing kaleidoscope of art was also thrilling. The entrance ticket of about 7 US Dollars equivalent is more than fair, but it is even better on Fridays and Saturdays, when the entrance is completely free! Judging from the visitor logbook it would seem that the museum is more popular amongst foreigners and tourist than the local Paraguayan, and it is in fact an excellent way to have a 360 degrees glimpse of Paraguayan art through the centuries and up to the XXI century. Highly recommended!
Niccolo' B — Google review
Great place. A beautiful and interesting exhibition. Very well presented exhibits of traditional Indian and contemporary art. The service was very nice and helpful. You can communicate in English. I highly recommend this place to everyone.
Nowicka G — Google review
If you want to know Paraguayan old and new culture, Museo del Barro is the best place to visit. We went there by walking from Paseo La Galeria. It took 10 minutes. There were a lot of exhibits. We spent time around 1 hour and half there. Their opening hours are limited but it’s worth to visit if you go Asunción.

Cafe
Bolsi is a renowned restaurant in Asuncion, known for its superb menu and welcoming atmosphere. It stands out with its extensive opening hours, serving customers until the early hours of the morning and reopening for breakfast. The restaurant offers a variety of dishes including Paraguayan, Brazilian, and Argentinean cuisine.
Review of Bolsi – Asunción, Paraguay What a great spot! Our servers, Cynthia and Isabela, were both very friendly and charming. We used Google Translate to bridge the Spanish–English gap, and they made us feel welcome throughout the meal. Food Highlights: Bife de Chorizo (400g): A delicious sirloin strip steak marinated with butter, herbs, and sea salt. Served with rustic mashed potatoes, garlic confit, and crispy shoestring onions. This was recommended by Isabela, and she was right—it was fantastic! For lunch, the portion was huge—I only managed half and took the rest to go. Vori-Vori: A traditional Paraguayan chicken stew with cheesy corn flour balls. The chicken was moist, and the broth was rich and flavorful. A must-try local dish. Empanadas: We shared two—Carne and Chilean style. Both were excellent. Drink: I tried the local Sajonia “Naranjito,” a refreshing light lager with a subtle citrus twist. Perfect for the warm afternoon. Overall Experience: An excellent restaurant with a mix of local and international dishes, great service, and generous portions. We found it especially nice for lunch—at night, the area around the restaurant can feel a little quiet and less lively compared to newer parts of town. Highly recommended if you’re visiting Asunción!
David L — Google review
It's a fun place to hang out and cheap. I advise you to get empanadas in a beer. They overcooked my last day otherwise I would have given it a higher rating.

My bill was 236,000 guaranies. We did not have a good experience at this well known place. We arrived around 11:15am, before the lunch rush. The staff kept passing by us, and we had to keep getting their attention. We were there more than 20 minutes before getting even a drink order in. Then a total of an hour before our food arrived. I saw it just sitting in the window, and had to ask for it to be picked up. When my wrap arrived it was under seasoned, the lettuce was soggy and brown and the meat a light brown or grey color. We tried to get the attention of supervisor, she was on her phone for the entire time we were there. Literally the entire hour, at the register on her phone. She just looked at me and then ignored me. We counted 9 employees standing around not doing anything. It looks like they are overstaffed and underdeliver. No one came to ask how our our meal was. I usually give a large tip, but could not in this case. I will not be returning and cannot recommend this place. Oveja Negra, or Mariscal Shopping are much better restaurant choices. The sushi was delicious. But overall very dissapointed.
Jay — Google review
We had the Cesar salad, and the canastita de comidas típicas, as well as a chop and piña colada (I did not like it). the food was very good! The best part was the service, our waiter Cesar was extremely kind and helpful.
Ash — Google review
Interesting place. They have a huge variety of dishes, baked goods, and drinks including nice draft beer. Server was nice to us despite language barrier caused by us. But they did not have any of the items I ordered to eat e.g. several seafood items, so to me it looked like the extensive menu was more of a wish list versus something they actually have to eat, which I find frustrating, as they let me order beer and requested food but took 10 minutes to tell us we don’t have your food. Still I rate them well because other customers seemed to be enjoying their bakery case items which I did not care to eat for lunch. Anyways the beer was cheap and good.
GT H — Google review
My place in Asuncion. Been there many times. Loved (almost) everything. The only reason for the 4 not 5 stars, is that there no prices (which are reasonable) on the menu. Come on guys! And some music will do as well.
Gad T — Google review
Nice café in a convenient location, just around the corner from the Panteón. The service was good and the atmosphere pleasant. There’s a lovely outdoor seating area to enjoy your drink. Even if the views aren’t the best (except for the mural on the building in front of it) it is a nice spot to stop and relax.
Natalia B — Google review
I’ve been traveling through Central and South America for the past four months, and I’ve learned that great restaurants can truly elevate the entire journey. On my visit to Asunción, my hotel manager recommended this spot — and I ended up dining here two nights in a row. It’s a fantastic place, especially if you’re traveling solo like I am. The restaurant features a beautiful U-shaped table encircling a central area, giving it a warm, Spanish-style charm. The staff were exceptional: well-trained, genuinely friendly, and wonderfully attentive without being intrusive. The food? Consistently excellent — every dish was a hit. I can wholeheartedly recommend making this restaurant part of your Asunción experience.

Nestled in the heart of Asuncion, the Costanera de Asuncion is a captivating waterfront promenade that runs alongside the Paraguay River. Despite being landlocked, Paraguay boasts its own beach at Playa de la Costanera, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and leisure activities. Visitors can indulge in delightful Asian fusion cuisine at the vibrant on-site restaurant or take a leisurely stroll along this picturesque walkway.
Great place to cool down a bit, the beach is nice with a great atmosphere early evening's on the weekends, try the churros👍lots police to keep everything safe but, once the crowds have left i wouldn't stay around as it can de a bit dangerous later on, liked it very much, a must do thing in Asuncion.
Bruce W — Google review
Presume this places is livelier on the weekend and evening, otherwise not a place you need to bother visiting. The “beach” is not a beach and there are no amenities to speak of. The costanera in Encarnación is 100 times better!
Rob C — Google review
We were there for the Independence day celebration International food festival. At least 10 countries represented had food and information about each country. Excellent food. Also each country did a presentation of dancing, music, singing. So much fun!
Bill A — Google review
Pedestrian zone by the river shore, popular at evenings and weekends. Some simple food stands, boat trips on the river, swimming not allowed.
Gernot R — Google review
Great for jogging, running or just riding a bicycle. Nice views of the bay and Palacio de los Lopez. Lots of vendors offering water, sodas, ice and our traditional drink terere. There's parking in both ways of the street and police control.

Beautiful place to go for a walk and spend some

Perfect, but could be cleaner, there is a lot of trash in the canals and the bay, it stinks. We feel pity for flora and fauna there, there's not even a hint of a national park, the locals have polluted everything.

The Botanical Garden of Asunción is a sprawling park that houses a botanical garden, a small zoo, and a museum of natural history and regional culture. It's an ideal outdoor activity for families with children, offering the opportunity to enjoy both attractions within the same enclosure. The zoo is home to around 70 animal species, including birds, rodents, and reptiles native to South America.
Prepare to be reminded about your health! (Look at pictures attached). Awesome park, recommended. Very well maintained.
Carlos G — Google review
The price is very cheap. I did see a few animals I wouldn't see in Canada. The pathways are rough and the way finding direction signs are almost non existent. It's worth visiting for sure. Some of the monkeys run wild.
Tyler P — Google review
A very nice park and possibility to see native and foreign animals in the middle of the city. It is a very nice destination, not only for children. One important recommendation I can give. Take with you means against mosquitoes or buy is directly at the cash desk. Without mosquito repellent, the fun is very limited.
Gingerfilm L — Google review
Nice park close by the city to relax. Plenty of benches available and a free museum of natural history it has lots of exposed animals and an air conditioning! Which is great for the hot summer days
Wouter L — Google review
A great place to visit with kids. The tickets are cheap (11.000 Gs for an adult, and 4.000 Gs for a kid), the animals are a sight to see, and a bus stop is near. What I would improve is a few more stalls where you could buy water or snacks (there is 1 gentleman selling these things near the entrance) and clearer signs where different types of animals are. We could not find capibaras although we looked for them everywhere. Also, do not forget to take anti-mosquitos repellents with you.
Olga S — Google review
They don't accept card... only cash... I felt discriminated because my means of payment was not accepted. Animals before the entrance looked hungry... they were eating dry leaves and sticks. I only pray the people there ake care of them. I did not get to go in. Honestly not sure about this place. Not sure what I would have seen inside.
Irina S — Google review
Probably nice 100 years ago. No plant labels like a real botanical garden. It's more of a historic park.

Park
Ñu Guasú - Humberto Rubín Park, located between the eastern edges of the city and Silvio Pettirossi International Airport, is one of Asuncion's largest green spaces, covering 25 hectares. The park offers various recreational and sports facilities such as soccer fields and a five-kilometer jogging pathway. Additionally, it provides free bicycle rental services for visitors to explore its extensive network of bicycle lanes.
They are trying :) it would be nice to have some bicycle or kick scooter rental facility here. The geese are fantastic, we love them.
Cybervintage I — Google review
Nice place to walk or run. Lots of green spaces and it also has some ducks and many native bird species
Sakata G — Google review
Biggest park around Asuncion. Lots of nature trails, good for running. Toilets at the entries. Some other activities like renting bike, cafe, children playground. There is a pond, more like a small lake. It's good for an afternoon stroll
Irena S — Google review
In many sources, the park is listed as dog friendly, but the truth is that they won't let you and your dog into the park.
Bbbbbb8us — Google review
Really nice park that’s safe to walk and run in as a woman by yourself. Lots of security available. But please update your bathrooms! They’re always filthy, never have toilet paper, and aren’t accessible with a stroller, which causes it to be very difficult to take my 3 young kids to the bathroom when my oldest needs to go.
Kelsey B — Google review
Thank GOD for this place! Paraguay is already landlocked but a wide open park is what you need to escape sometimes. You 'will' need a car to get there though. Has a few workout pieces & cheap bicycles to rent (Bring your ID!) if you like but most people just go there to walk it's length then go. It could benefit from a garden & a .ore ambitious play area for kids.
Dan T — Google review
Great place to walk, ride a bike o practice a sport, there are basketball and tennis courts, football fields. All of the courts are free to use but there's almost always people using them!
David N — Google review
Best park to run at in Asunción! It’s a nice flat 5km loop with markings every 100m so you know how you’re tracking. The bike park next door also allows you to rent bikes for free! You just need to leave some ID. Only issue is that it can get crowded after work or on weekends, so recommend going early in the AM.

A large, well-maintained park with a shaded walking/biking trail and playground. It's perfect for a leisurely walk or jog in the shade.
What a wonderful place. Nice paths through shades. Benches along the way for resting, kids playground. The 1.5km circuit is filled with encouraging words and helpful suggestions. Joggers and walkers have great access and are well utilised by the locals. There is a library in the park which is my favourite!

A wonderful patch of natural peace within walking distance of Asuncion's new City central districts. The Park's wide walking paths are lined with lush plants and overhanging tree branches provide plenty of cool shade. It took me around a half hour to walk the Park's outer circuit and I left feeling calmed and refreshed. I will be back.

Great walking place with many trees and flowers lots of shade on hot days to protect you from the sun. Slight inclines increase the difficulty of your walk. Plenty of parking. Only negative is ID control police. It's a park not a military installation. Where's my freedom to go where I want to without government interference?

⸻ An Ideal Place for Walking and Running This park is a perfect escape for anyone looking to walk or run in a peaceful environment. Entry requires either a physical ID or a photo of it. Since it’s reserved exclusively for pedestrians, you don’t have to worry about cyclists. The park is spacious enough that city noise fades away, allowing you to enjoy the calm and focus on your activity. The people here are respectful and friendly, creating a positive atmosphere. Many thanks to those who maintain and care for this wonderful place.
Erhan Y — Google review
I visited Parque de la Salud during my stay in Asunción and was truly impressed. The park is located in a calm, secure, and beautiful district — the perfect setting to relax and reconnect with nature. Entry is free, and you simply register when you enter and again when you leave, which adds a sense of safety and organization. There are clean restrooms for men and women right at the entrance. Inside, the park is beautifully maintained — green, peaceful, and full of life. You’ll find many small paths winding through the trees, offering different routes each time you visit. Hidden benches and quiet corners invite you to sit down, reflect, or just listen to the many birds around you. A lovely surprise is the small open library, where you can borrow a book and read surrounded by nature — a perfect detail for those who like to disconnect and slow down. Everywhere you look, there are colorful butterflies, birds, and insects, giving the park a vibrant, living atmosphere. One small tip: if you’re sensitive to mosquito bites, it’s good to come prepared, as there can be some around — especially in shaded or humid areas. Overall, Parque de la Salud is a real gem in Asunción: peaceful, safe, and beautifully cared for. I can highly recommend it and will definitely return to stroll around and find some peace again.

Best park in Asuncion to take a walk. The path is about a mile around. It’s shaded and the mosquitos aren’t as bad as at other parks. There’s a small park for the kids to play on.

Zoo
The Zoo of Asunción, established in 1914 by Dr. Carlos Fiebreig, holds significant national historical, ecological, and scientific value. Visitors can enjoy a variety of animals including parrots and monkeys in a simple yet enjoyable setting. The zoo offers an affordable opportunity to see numerous animal species and is considered a valuable heritage site for the city.
A fun day out! Not a fancy zoo but good price and lots of animals!
Nicole V — Google review
Not the greatest zoo 😔. Unfortunately, there were no many animals to see and worse than that, the few animals were in not the greatest conditons. The facilities in the zoo for the birds were rather sad, since they have to hang on the cage wire since there were so many of them in a single cage, the hippo looked tired and the water where it had to swim was dirty and smelly. There are a few exceptions like the free little monkeys that looks happy or the tigers that are in a better cage and look relaxed. One horrible thing to say is the music listened by the keepers, I'm not talking about taste here, I'm talking about the level of noise. A zoo suppose to be a sanctuary for animals to keep alive, unbothered, not a prison for human entertainment.
Raul T — Google review
Nice parrot exhibit! With monkeys running around on the tops of their cages! Basic but fun!

Plaza de los Héroes is a charming square in Asuncion, Paraguay, offering a pleasant resting spot under the shade of jacaranda trees. Despite some issues with marginal and unsavory individuals, it remains an important historical site and a beautiful place for tourists to visit. The micro center of Asuncion is significantly enjoyable due to its natural surroundings and harmonious interaction between nature, architecture, and people.

(Translated by Google) A brief history. The fascist sculptor, beloved by Francisco Franco and a participant in the Valley of the Fallen in Spain, built a syncretic monument for the dictator Stroessner during his lifetime, linking Stroessner, the Virgin of Caacupé, and Carlos Antonio López, decapitating himself on the summit of Lambaré Hill. In 1991, in a spirit of democratic fervor, the city of Asunción removed the dictator's statue. Facing the risk of its loss as an object of worship, the artist Carlos Colombino created an "anti-monument" with such powerful elements that it prevented the reconstruction of the statue and the symbol of hatred, pain, and death that today represents everything related to his conceptually pure fascist regime. Memorial activities are held in this plaza, reflecting the barbarity of the Stroessner dictatorship from 1954 to 1989. And every August 30th, tributes are held to the disappeared on the INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE DISAPPEARED, a designation proposed by Fedefam and instituted by the UN in 2010. The name of the plaza was established as an act of remembrance and a formal commitment to non-repetition by the municipality and the Paraguayan state, in accordance with the national constitution and the international pacts that the Paraguayan state has signed with the community of nations, in accordance with the international system for the protection of human rights. The Plaza de los Desaparecidos, in the city of Asunción, was named by municipal ordinance in 1994 and strengthened by national law since 2003. It is a "Memorial Space" where various memorial activities are held in honor of the more than 450 disappeared detainees from the dictatorial period of 1954-1989. The memorial space is highly visited and is a national and international landmark. (Original) La historia breve. Playa de La Costanera, also known as Costanera de Asuncion, is a vibrant waterfront promenade along the Paraguay River. It's a popular spot for locals and tourists to enjoy leisurely evening strolls, savor delicious street food, and watch street performers. While it may be named 'beach,' it's important to note that the water is contaminated. For those seeking a real beach experience, heading to Encarnacion is recommended.

Plaza Uruguaya is a vibrant green square in Asuncion, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration. This charming space is adorned with trees and monuments, offering benches and playgrounds where visitors can relax under the beautiful lapacho trees that bloom with pink flowers in spring. Once home to the Triumphal Arch built by Marshal Francisco Solano Lopez, today it buzzes with life as students gather to enjoy terere and browse through craft markets and bookshops nearby.
Nice place to sit in the shade and rest from all the walking. Fountain of drinkable water available inside the park. Families enjoying time . Plenty of shade and benches. Surprisingly realized there is a deep respect from everyone to everyone. Mother's are deeply respected.

Also - two bookstores in the park, and one across the street. Bought real PAPER maps, History of Paraguay - not for the faint of heart!, Myths and legends of Paraguay - wow. Now all I gotta do is learn español. And - across the other street is the old train station, now a museum. I think admission was 10,000 G. Worth it.
