Samaria Gorge is a popular destination in Crete, known for its rugged routes and stunning natural scenery. It's one of the largest gorges in Europe and attracts nature and fitness enthusiasts from around the world. The 16-km hike starts at Xyloskalo on the Omalos plateau and takes about 6 to 8 hours to complete, ending at the southern coast of Crete.
We went out of season and didn't research properly so we were unaware of extra costs. Where you park in the mountains at the start of the Gorge walk you will need to pay for parking €5 cash. We knew this but didn't have cash. There is a cash machine or you can pay in the cafe by contactless, also you can buy your bus ticket and toilet ticket here €7 & €0.50. To enter the park contactless at the gate. The staff are lovely and the Gorge is stunning! We are both physically fit, it took us just under 5 hours, to leisurely walk and admire the beautiful surroundings. If you are not fit you can still do it but take into account the heat etc. There are regular toilets and drinkable spring water points. The route is almost entirely downhill, steeply at the start. Hang on to your entry ticket as you will need to to exit the park. Here there is a bar but be aware you still have a little more walking to do to then either get a €2 euro bus or walk another 2k to the boat. As we were out of season, there was a 3.5 hour wait for the ferry €32. We had ice cream and drinks, it was very expensive. The beach and sea were a welcome sight, black sand and pebbles were very pretty. After the ferry, the bus was waiting for us, this took over an hour of switchbacks. We absolutely loved the Gorge itself and still would have done it knowing all the extra costs but wanted to highlight that for other travellers like us who half arse stuff! 🤣 10/10 epic place!

Gorge was amazing, great views and nice weather for hiking. Was told it would take 5 hours, and that was almost exactly how long took. Ferry to Sougia was 16euro and bus was 7euro. Minus star because it was not clear which bus you were supposed to take and I got on the wrong one! Extra 3 hours and a 75euro taxi ride to get back to my car. Bus signage needs to be more clear!!!!!!!

This place is worth to see! It was very crowded in August and the whole route had to be walked fast because of the schedule, so this was a real sporting. There was someone near you all the Time and you couldn't get any peace. We did this in 6,5 hours with all brakes. 🗻 Take enough snacks so you have energy to hike. You can fill your water bottle in many places so you only need one bottle per person and I recommend a big bottle! Village after this gorge has good restaurants to eat and drink without forgetting the clear blue sea. Take a bathing suit and exchange clothes or even just a clean shirt with you and dive to the refreshing sea after a long walk. Feels so damn good! 🌊 Ferry ride away from this village is beautiful! Make sure you'll get on the right side of the ferry, so you'll see all the mountains.

Gorgeous gorge :) Hiking shoes, trekking poles are a must in all seasons. A warm long-sleeved top is needed for October (on October 16th, at the breakfast point it was 6 degrees with a fog. All in the gorge is excellently organised. Water and wc during the whole route. October: many people, very crowded at the star (like you are in a shopping mall), but along the way you could be having some piece walking by yourself. Loved the ferry part on the way back as you see the island in its pre-sunset beauty. I'd say summer months are not a good time, better visit in beautiful autumn.

Amazing hike ! 13 km down hill and an extra 3 km to a beautifull ceistal cleah wtr beach ! Bring good shoes wtr and pace youre self . Theres no need to rush . At the beach make sure u get youre ferry ticket and then bus ride back to youre car its a whole day activity i think . Totaly worth it

Must do when you're in the region of Chania. Would recommend to go as early as possible. At the last part you're fully exposed to the sun without shade. Make sure you got a decent condition and good hiking shoes. Take a bottle with to refill with the spring water. I also recommend to get some fresh orange juice at the end of the trail, it's very refreshing and tasty!

So beautiful! Details below but to summarize: -Be prepared and wear comfortable shoes (preferably hiking shoes with ankle support as you’re hiking downhill on loose rocks) and it’s 16km so easy to roll an ankle if not wearing appropriate footwear -Bring a water bottle as you can refill for free along the hike from fresh water taps -bring lots of food -free washrooms all along the hike -bring cash -hiking in October was awesome. Sunny and 23 degrees. The park closes at the end of October so do it now!! We went on a Thursday in mid October. We left from the city of Chania and got the 7:45am public bus (KTEL) from the Chania bus station heading to Xyloskalo. We got to the bus station 30 minutes early which was good because it was very busy. We bought a ticket in person at the booth for both the bus (to Samaria and back to Chania) and for the boat as well. For those who are unfamiliar, you must pay for the bus to take you to the village of Xyloskalo which is where the start of the hike begins and also for a boat ticket for later on (I’ll explain shortly). You can buy a boat ticket later at the port but I found it easier to purchase one while we were at the bus station. You will see a sign for queues to either buy just a bus ticket or a bus + boat. When you start the hike, you then must also pay an entrance fee to the national park which ends up being about 10 euro. The attendant will give you a ticket for entering the national park. Keep this ticket as there will be a ticket booth at the end of the hike that you have to pass by and give it to them (I misplaced mine but found it!) Bring cash as well as they accept card at the entrance but it didn’t always work. Then you start the hike! We started around 9:30am. Enjoy the bus ride from a chania to the hike entrance. It’s incredible! So many goats (the bus had to stop for them to cross the road many times) and the views of the mountains are amazing. The road gets to be very winding so if you get car sick, prepare ahead of time. The hike took us about 6 hours total but that’s because we were taking our time as we knew we didn’t have to rush. Bring lots of food and snacks as there isn’t much when you arrive at the top of the hike (a simple coffee shop that also requires you to pay 0.50 euro to use the washroom). There is fresh drinking water from the river and taps along the hike so just bring a bottle! Near the end of the hike, you’ll reach a cafe which will be about 2km away from the port of Agia Roumeli which is where you take the boat back to the bus. There will be a smaller bus waiting about 5 minutes after the cafe and offering to give people a ride to the port for 2 euro. If you’re tired, take it! Otherwise the 2km walk will only take about 25 minutes. What’s another 2km on your walk! Once you get to the port of Agia Roumeli, you should have plenty of time to get something to eat, swim and chill before catching the ferry back at 5:30pm. There is one time slot for the ferries and there are 2 ferries at this time so make sure to check your ticket and know which one to catch. The one we got was to Chore Sfakia but the other ferry goes to Sougia. We almost got on the wrong ferry so just double check! After the ferry, you’ll catch your last bus back to Chania. The ferry ride was smooth and beautiful. It was sunset and one of the prettiest boat rides I had been on. The ferry has one stop before your stop (Sfakia). Our boat and bus tickets we purchased earlier in the day and so our final bus heading back to Chania said it was to depart at 6:30pm, however our ferry was delayed in leaving so we were going to be late for that. I ended up asking a ferry crew member if the bus waits for the ferry and they said yes so don’t worry if your ferry is late as the bus will wait since so many people on the ferry will be needing to get back to Chania! The bus ride back was about an hour and a half and we got back to the bus station around 8:45pm. Overall, an incredible day and so worth it. I was sore for a few days after but just because I’m not used to hiking mostly downhill!
Kaylie I — Google review
I’m so glad we hiked the Samaria gorge! The week we were in Chania was quite rainy so we almost missed out but miraculously the gorge was re opened on our last day. Not for the unfit or faint hearted the difficulty level was medium to hard. Most of the time you’re going downhill which plays on your knees and hips after a while but once down in the valley the effort becomes much easier. But wow, we felt every one of the 15km or so for several days after. It took us 4.5 hours to complete but we were at the head of the pack and had a quick pace. I can’t imagine what summer must be like…more people and higher temps would make it quite unpleasant in comparison to the autumn conditions we were blessed with. The gorge is so pretty and it feels like you pass through multiple different landscapes along the way. Make sure you plunge into the beautiful aquamarine water at Agia Roumeli at journeys end! There’s lots of nice places to eat while you wait out the several hours until the return ferry.

Imbros Gorge is a stunning 11-kilometer rocky canyon located in the breathtaking White Mountains of Crete, also known as Lefka Ori. This popular hiking destination offers an easy 8-kilometer trail that begins in the charming village of Imbros and leads adventurers through narrow paths flanked by towering cliffs and picturesque landscapes. The hike typically takes around 2.
Nice and pretty easy walk for everyone You can start at the Imbros village where there's places to park. One is at a restaurant where the parking is free if you order at least 1 thing like a drink. Which is what we did. You can then do the walk down the gorge. Pretty easy and nice walk. At the end there were busses to go up, you pay 5 euros per person to go back to the village which is what we did.
Joppe — Google review
Nice walk for about 2,5-3 hours. Good walking shoes are necessary. The 'Gorge' was very dry at the moment. No water in the environment. Halfway there was a food and drink stall. At the end too. 5 euro entrance for adults, children free. 5 euro per person to get you back to the starting point by mini bus.
Bert D — Google review
Really glad we went to hike the gorge, a stunning experience! €5 per person entry fee - very reasonable. Just be warned, the paths throughout the entire gorge are extremely rocky and you'll need to be able to navigate some tricky areas. Many said its "beginner/easy" but note that its still a trek and you need to be very careful where you're walking. Hike took us (a couple) about 3-3.5 hrs and that was with very limited stops (maybe max of 15 mins total) because you need to go so slow in some areas. If you have hiking shoes highly recommend using, I was slipping a lot wearing trainers and you can also feel the rocky stones on the bottom/sides of your feet depending on the footwear). Bring plenty of water and a hat too. There is a shop halfway but it's a long way to get there. If you start at 9am during the summer you'll be in shade for most of the time but still very very hot. Sights were still lovely! You will also see a sign towards the end of the hike that says beach is 7km away, don't worry there's a cafe shortly after the sign where you can get the shuttle bus up to the start where you would have parked. You're highly likely to have people to share the shuttle with (the cafe staff just give you a ticket for €5 per person) and they arrange it all. There's plenty of parking spaces at the start, recommend using the toilets nearby as there doesn't seem to be any actual toilets along the way.

Fab walk and scramble! There was one review on Google saying you could do this walk barefoot….idiot! Thankfully I read the other ones. Boots are better but trainers work too. It’s very rocky for the walk through the gorge but then it’s just a mountainous path on the way back to the car parking area. Some of the rocks in the gorge are quite slippery from years of footfall but as long as you take care it’s easy enough to navigate. Follow the red markers to the top of the gorge and then veer right when you see the yellow markers. The yellow markers will lead you back to the car parking area. On the yellow path you will come across some “gates” basically just fence panels being used as gates. You will need to go through these but just make sure to close them after you. We stopped for photos, a sandwich and lots of drinks of water and it took us less than two hours. We’re a medium fitness level 🤣 Well worth a visit!!
Rachel P — Google review
8Km hike through the gorge. €5 entry fee which isn’t too bad. Walking shoes/boots are recommended but it is doable in trainers (would advise against doing it in sandals, crocs, flip flops etc). Sun cream, water and snacks are recommended too. There is a small shack shop/cafe which sells soft drinks, water and beer. It also has a donkey there too!
Gareth J — Google review
Great walk/hike. Arrived at 06.30 to avoid the super hot sun, bonus - didn't have to pay the €5 fee. Option is to walk back up the gorge or pay around €25 euro for a "taxi" back to Imbros Village to get to your car. If stopping for food/drink at the end, walk right and up the hill to nice places to stop. Don't pick 1st available Taverna.
Mark S — Google review
Great place to walk ! Entry cost was 5’euro. Which was a shame. Magnificent views and definitely worth the walk . We were informed by the ticket office that the walk was roughly 5 km long but it turned out to be 10 km! We were not properly prepared with walking boots and this is definitely needed! But we managed it anyway. The ticket office told us that the taxi back would be 5 euros pp! It turned out to be 25 euros for s taxi . The 5 euros was for a bus of 10 people or more pp ! So Watch out as we were again misinformed!
Matt — Google review
Lovely hike. Moderately challenging -- about 0.5 miles of elevation drop over a 4 mile hike, but nice that there is no uphill at all. Footing is loose stones so would recommend good shoes. We started from the top after 4pm (in May), which meant most of the hike was in shadow and we didn't finish until 7:30, so I'd recommend starting earlier. There were goats and dragon lilies everywhere. Note, you have to walk a little ways along a valley from the parking lot before you get to the ticket booth where you pay, and then after the ticket booth it turns from a broad valley into a gorge. At the bottom, there are taxis you can hire to bring you back to your car (we paid 25 euro for 4 people).

Richtis Gorge, also known as Faraggi tou Richti, is a popular hiking destination in the eastern part of Crete. The 2.5-mile rugged trail leads to a scenic gorge with a stream, waterfall, and rich wildlife. The lush green state-protected park extends from Exo Mouliana village to Richtis Beach and features ruins of old water mills and cottages along the banks of the stream.
Unexpected to find such a gorge on Crete. It feels like you are walking in a tropical forest. It's beautiful. Even on a hot day it's nice to walk, due to the shade of all the trees. Be prepared for the many steps and rocks you have to pass and make sure you do not walk unoticed along the big waterfall. It's worth it to start from the main road and walk by the old bridge and do a loop through the gorge and olive fields.
Zany R — Google review
Richtis Gorge is a beautiful hike with lush scenery and a peaceful atmosphere, but I was a bit underwhelmed by the waterfall—it didn’t have much water when I visited. As for Richtis Beach at the end of the trail, it was a bit of a letdown. The shore is covered in stones, making it uncomfortable for swimming or relaxing. Worth the walk for nature lovers, but don’t expect a great beach day at the end.
Tina W — Google review
A beautiful trail I would rate at a medium make sure you have good shoes. Sandals will just make your life miserable and sneakers won’t be any better. Proper hiking shoes will be very helpful and make your life easier. Give yourself a proper two hours starting from the top about an hour if you start from the bottom, but there’s hardly any parking spots on the bottom.
MobyOne50 — Google review
Quite an easy hike towards the waterfall and the sea. There are stairs or ropes for the most difficult passes. It’s 80 minutes walk from the bridge to the waterfall. The nature is beautiful and you hike mostly in the shade of the trees. You get to see two old water mills on the way (in ruins). There is a 5-euro fare.
S G — Google review
A nice walk from the beach to the waterfall and back. The path is not difficult, but make sure to bring water. The waterfall and the lake are very refreshing in the heat.
Gonzik A — Google review
This gorge is very pretty and gentle. No real challenge for most although you can get out of breath on some parts. Approx 7km each way. Nice picnic area at the end with fresh water. A nice spot to strip off and cool down with a swim in the sea.

Her er en korrekturlæst og flydende version af din tekst. Jeg har bevaret din tone, men rettet grammatiske fejl og forbedret klarhed og læsbarhed: ⸻ Corrected Version: Quite a nice hike, but I would recommend wearing proper footwear—not flip-flops, as some suggest are okay. I managed the hike in sneakers, which was doable, but be aware that some rocks are very slippery. It was a beautiful hike where I saw different kinds of fruits, flowers, plants, and even frogs or toads. I also spotted two eels in the small lakes, which I didn’t expect at all. I started from the top, where there’s a small parking area next to the main road, and walked down to the shore, then back up again. I think you can also drive down and do the hike the other way around, but the road is a bit bumpy. A car suited for off-road driving would probably be best, although I did see regular rental cars parked at the bottom—so it is possible. All in all, it’s a good hike, but you’ll need to bring plenty of water due to the heat. It’s also somewhat challenging, so bringing a light snack might be a good idea—I managed with just water in the end. The total distance is about 10 km (round trip). After the hike, I ended up at a small taverna in a village called Η Πλατειά Στράτα (“The Broad Street” or “The Wide Road”). I definitely recommend eating here—it felt very authentic and cozy, and the prices were very reasonable.
Casper K — Google review
This is a really nice place with lots of cool spots. We visited in mid-September, and it was quite dry. Please bring good boots. I saw some people wearing sandals, which poses a risk of foot injuries in my opinion. To fully appreciate this place, it's best to arrive early when it's less crowded at the waterfall.

Agia Eirini Gorge, also known as Agia Irini, is a hidden gem in Chania and offers a quieter alternative to the popular Samaria Gorge. The hike costs 2 euros per person and features a relatively simple path lined with beautiful oleanders in the initial kilometer. As you progress, the trail becomes more challenging with stairs and varying elevations. It's important to note that some safety barriers may be broken along the way.
Superb hike. Medium to easy level. We parked downward at the Oasis restaurant (known as Oasi on Google Maps) and went up first : took us 2:30. We had a break at the cute restaurant at the top, then went down in 2:00. An other option is to park at Agia Irini, then go down and either call a taxi or walk the 5 km down to Sougia and take the bus back to Agia Irini. You'll need proper shoes, and cold water. There are 4 points where you will find toilets and drinkable water foutains - but the water there is warm. During the way up, there are lots of big rocks during the 2 km, then a really easy walk for another km, then it goes up and down with lots of irregular stairs during 2 km. Then it's a really cool path until the end.
Renaud M — Google review
The gorge was recommended to us because Samaria Gorge was closed due to heavy rainfalls the night before. Agia Erini Gorge was really beautiful at the beginning, we paid 2€ per person. The hike was mostly downhill, around 9-10km. However, the last 2km were really bad, you had to walk or climb over stones all the time, which was quite dangerous from time to time. Also, the trail markings had just disappeared, and we weren’t sure if we were still on the right path. Easy to say, we were happy to reach the Travern at the end, where we had some cold drinks and then took a taxi back to the starting point.

Wonderful walk. Ideal for 3 hours with a mixture of easy walk and some clambering over rocks. My boys (aged 10 & 11) loved it! Great cafe at bottom of gorge ..going down.

(Translated by Google) A very beautiful hike, with fairly well-marked trails. Be a bit fit because sometimes it's steep and requires some rock climbing. The Gorges are magnificent, however, we turned back because the advertised 1.5-hour hike ended up taking 3 hours. Also bring cash because a gentleman waits at the beginning of the hike, after 15 minutes of walking, to charge you 2 euros per person to complete the hike.

Beautiful peaceful gorge, you wander through oleander, pine and plane trees and see the occasional goat family. It’s about 2.5 hours each way with a cafe at each end.

(Translated by Google) A very beautiful hike in this gorgeous gorge! We were practically alone in the gorge and encountered only a few other hikers, and a few goats. There are a few picnic areas, one of which even has a toilet, toilet paper, running water, and soap. It's an advantage if you're a bit of a hiker, as you'll often have to climb over large stones and rocks. We started at the upper entrance and needed exactly four hours for the entire hike, including a 30-minute break. NOTE: When we arrived at the Oasis taverna at 5:30 p.m., it was unfortunately already closed. We couldn't call a taxi ourselves because there was no cell reception! Luckily, we ran into the taverna owner just before he left and spoke to him. This allowed him to order us a taxi. Otherwise, we would have had to walk for a long time. The taxi driver arrived after five minutes and drove us kamikaze-style back to the gorge entrance, where the taverna was fortunately open and waiting for us. All's well that ends well. Ende gut, alles gut. 😊

Less crowded than Samaria Gorge, it's open year-round and suitable for families with children.
The gorge takes you down but I didn’t go that far but the view is beautiful even though you don’t go that far. Trail was easy to walk there. I came back and went up to Fygous gorge which is quite difficult hike up, good shoes and physical fitness is needed. Hike is quite rocky. You can go down from the other side of the mountain and the way down (Palia Strata, old road) is much easier back to parking area.

It took us 2 hours and 20 minutes from the starting point (up) to the taverna oasis which is 7km. If you take a taxi from moni to drive to the starting point it is 30 euro. I expected the hike to be more difficult, I would have walked down and up next time. Hiking shoes are better to use but jogging shoes can do it. Beautiful landscape, relatively wide so you get sun from 10:30.

Very nice, easy-moderate hike,60% area is covered under trees. It's 11.5km hike, not 7km. Definitely recommend hiking shoes. Three rest areas are inside the gorge also toilets are available. Each end you can get a taxi to go back to your starting point. Taxi is 35 euro for 17km.

Great trail with soaring cliffs either side. Slow going mostly due to the rocky terrain. A taxi can be arranged back to the start from the cafe for 25€ per couple/ group.

Surely not the easiest hike, and I’m not sure how one could do it in 2,5 hours - it took us 4 hours! Some areas you even have to go crawling (through the boulders). Wear COMFORTABLE shoes, don’t forget to rest when you have a chance. During summer heat it’s quite a challenge. Despite all this, the views were incredible, real wilderness, practically no people around (we met maybe 5 other couples through all route).

Beautiful gorge 7,5 kilometer hike which we really enjoyed. Lovely vistas and peaceful areas to rest and look at flora and fauna. No water in the gorge in early October. Some parts are easy, some parts quite craving if one has any mobility issues, so it is inappropriate to call this hike easy! We hiked from the top to the bottom which was less taxing but harder on the joints. We enjoyed spinach pies and a smoothie at the Oasis Taverna and the charming hostess called a cab for us. We started out with a coffee at the Taverna at the Agia Irini entrance. Also kind and helpful hosts.

7km hike north to south, not that hard, yet, did this in August, so it was more challenging than it should be. Though most of the trail is in shade, you still feel the heat. Ther are signposting every 1km, and at the 2nd, 3rd and 4th km there are rest areas and drinking water, though the water at the 3rd km were tea hot, and the tao at the 4th km was not working... The scenery is dramatic, cannot compare to Samaria as was not doing that trail. At the end there is a Tavern, but don't expect too much, good for a refreshment. They were kind to helo us call a taxi back to the starting point. Took us 3.5 hours of a slow walk with kids (little one is 11yo). Overall very nice trail, I assume spring time is much better, maybe there is still water in the gorge
Lior N — Google review
Probably the second best gorge hike on Crete. Starting at the tavena Porofarago in Agia Irini, the first part of the hike is really easy. But this hike has the most rocks and stones than any other gorge hike we did. It offers quite some variation, and is certainly not as crowded as the Samaria hike. Needless to say that good hiking boots/shoes and enough to drink are required. At the Taverna Oasis you can ask them to call a taxi to bring you back to Agia irini, if you don't want to walk to Sougia.

Aradena Gorge is a thrilling hiking destination in Crete, offering an uncrowded trail that leads to the early-Byzantine Church of Agios Ioannis and then descends through lush landscapes to the idyllic Marmara Beach. The beach is secluded and boasts vibrant teal waters, making it one of the best on the southwest coast. The hike is challenging but rewarding, featuring a rock face descent with a rope for assistance and sturdy ladders.
Aradena Gorge (Φαράγγι Αράδαινας) is a spectacular natural wonder in Crete, perfect for hikers and nature lovers. The gorge offers a dramatic landscape with towering cliffs, lush vegetation, and a well-marked path that takes you through its breathtaking scenery. Walking through the gorge, you'll encounter a mix of rugged terrain and serene spots, with ancient ruins and wildlife adding to the experience. It’s a challenging yet rewarding hike, and the views are absolutely stunning. Whether you start from the abandoned village of Aradena or the nearby bridge, the journey through this gorge is a must-do adventure for anyone visiting Crete.

Aradena Gorge was on of the best experience on Crete, bungee jumping was amazing, staff was very professional. Hiking was really nice and beautiful not that hard in my opinion, at the end of the Hike you get to the beautiful beach and you have restaurant to eat, there is no road to transport back so you have to take taxi boat or go back through the Gorge.
Branko N — Google review
Probability the most beautiful gorge on the whole island, it is 7 km in length it is moderate difficulty due to the path being full of stones. Also in the middle it splits on two paths an easy one and a hard one, the hard one is the most beautiful part of the gorge, but you will need to climb down two metal ladders and use rope to get down from few big rocks, the rope is already installed. The best part of the gorge is also the end point which is Marmara, extremely beautiful beach with tons of caves to explore, there is also a restaurant with very delicious food.

Lovely hike. High recommended. We walked down after getting a bus to the top. Did this in June and was hot. Took approx 6l of water and was just about enough. Some people hike up and down. Make sure you know that there is a small snack bar up the top but nothing major. Only crisps and chocolate etc.

Such a wonderful hike going the round trip starting from the bridge followikg the street and up the gorge from the beach. Impressive sounds of eagles and vultures flying close by. In the winter time you might not meet anyone else, so you might get a lonely tour as we did. This might be the best gorge to hike.

Beautiful gorge with stunning views. We hiked down and back up, which took approximately 4 hours and 45 minutes in total. The hike is not technical but requires some maneuvering around large boulders.
Marios V — Google review
Brilliant walk but not for the faint hearted! There is a rope at one point to help you climb down a rock face which I found the most difficult part the ladders in comparison were a piece of cake as they are very very sturdy. We started at 7am took a taxi from Chora Skafion which cost €50 to the Aradena village. The walk took us 3-4 hrs we took our time as we were wearing runners and some of the rocks can be quite slippery. The swim at the end at Marmara beach was deliciously cool the water there is like silk. Would definitely do the walk again.
Helen R — Google review
Amazing gorge away from the crowds. Plan to spend some time at the beach at the end, two sunbeds and an umbrella are £7.50 for the day. Don't get caught there in the heat and have a plan to get back out. Walking back up might be tricky but doable or you could take a water taxi to a different town but need to plan from there. Walking out of Loutro in the heat is NOT advisable.

Mili Gorge, also known as Myli Gorge, is a picturesque canyon located near Rethymno city in Crete. The 3.1-mile trail offers a moderate 1.5-hour hike with an elevation gain of 656 feet, showcasing old mills, rock pools, charming chapels, and a historic tavern. The path provides stunning views and unique old buildings along the way. While the uphill trek may be challenging, the downhill journey is easier and faster.
Nice old mills to see, although none is near working condition, one is nicely restored but still missing wheel and gears, just the mill stone. With (smaller) kids I'd recommend starting at Milli and go down to Banana taverna and then take back a taxi.

An impressive hiking trail that is well worth recommending. It is moderately challenging, so proper footwear is essential. Much of the route offers shaded sections, but if you hike around midday or into the afternoon, a hat and plenty of water are strongly advised. This is a round-trip trail; we started from the northern point, heading uphill first and then returning downhill. The uphill section is the more demanding part, with a total elevation gain and loss of approximately 150 meters.At both ends of the trail, you will find charming tavernas where you can rest and enjoy a meal. There are also options to call a taxi if you prefer to hike only one direction instead of the full loop.

One of my favorite places on Crete. The path through the gorge leads past ruins of mills and lush vegetation to a creek with small natural ponds. Great place for photography, hikes, and a rest from Crete’s heat.

Take plenty of water. It’s 45 mins each way. You go back the same route you came. Park on the road, the entrance is obvious. We went downhill first and then the return was all uphill. However at the end once we were almost back to the car, we went swimming in the waterfall. It was amazingly clear, cold and refreshing. Something different to do in Crete. You have to be averagely fit and be prepared in trainers. Ive never been wild swimming before so it was wonderful to do here. We went in September and there was plenty water for a dip. I was a bit worried how hard the trail would be in the heat but around 70% was in the shade. I’m also not very fit but managed it fine, taking small breaks on the way back up hill.

Nice quiet gorge, kid friendly, with a small stream of water going through it, we visited in early October so its the end of the dry season and the waterflow was good. If you are looking for short trail xlose to Rethimno, not too hard, with a little bit of water, this is for you.

Super nice hike. Amazing views.Just done it from Avrakonte in aprox 7h.If you want to reach Spathi Peak , be aware that the route is not very well marked. Balos Beach is a renowned lagoon with turquoise waters and white sandy shores, attracting visitors who can access it by boat or hike. It's recommended to take an organized coach trip to Balos from Hersonissos for a day trip. The beach is considered one of the most exotic in Crete, featuring shallow crystal blue waters and spectacular white sand.
Absolutely breathtaking place. The pictures looks exactly like this in real life. A few things to note…the road to the parking lot is unpaved. You can rent an ATV from a shop about 10-15 minutes before the entrance of the preserved area. The entrance fee is 1 euro pp, parking is 3 euros. to use the restroom near the parking lot is 1 euro pp. It takes about 30-35 minutes to drive from where you pay your entrance fee to the parking lot. It’s about a 15-20 minute walk down to the lagoon. It’s not very difficult to climb back up…if you exercise even just 1-2 times a week you can do it. The climb is not very steep. Make sure to bring a bag that closes to the beach. The goats will dig in your bag if they see food. This didnt happen to us but we saw it happens to others.

Amazing. I watched sunrise up on the hill in the car park and also the sunset half way to the lagoon. I enjoyed swimming in the many warm rock pool and walking around the rocks away from the crowd. I did. Wed comfortable walking shoes in the rocks. I used the grey sand as a mask on my face and body.

Definitely worth visiting, expected the worst after reading the reviews, but isn’t too bad getting there , the road it’s pretty bad but not impossible to get there , just have to make sure you have a good car . The walk is about 30 min going down the hill , so make sure you’re wearing good shoes, definitely not flip flops or sandals. It is a workout but worth it for the beautiful views

Stunning place, we took the ferry here from kissamos port which was far more enjoyable than taking the dirt road. We came in mid October and I must say the water was quite cold. Stunning location though, lots of space for being flopped on a towel taking in the sun. Lots of goats to keep you entertained and just lovely views.

After a 40 minute off-road drive ( actually not bad) among goats and beautiful mountains, you reach a place like you've never seen before. The turquoise, shallow ( and jellyfish-less) sea is just incredible having the white sand next to it. Preveli beach is a remote and well-known destination where the Kourtaliotis River meets the sea, creating a spectacular exotic setting with palm groves and stairs. It's located about 35km south of Rethymno and offers a unique family adventure with small ponds, waterfalls, and an easy trail to the gorge. The beach is sandy and not well organized due to protection regulations. Additionally, nearby attractions like the Cave of Melidoni add historical significance to the area.
Gorgeous small beach with lovely tavern and access to the palm forest. Didn’t find it ‘overcrowded’ like all the moaning reviews said - and we went on a busy Sunday. The river water is naturally murky as it’s a river but wasn’t unclean. Tavern/cafe charges €3 per soft drink can which is quite normal for a tourist trap. Cafe has toilets and a changing room too. The walk back up to the closest parking is incredibly challenging and not advised with babies or if unfit. There’s a boat that’s advised instead. Parking was very cheap - only €3! Because of where it is, it’s a very windy beach and the sand can blow up into your eyes and face. Because of this it’s best to either set up camp in the trees (this was popular) or to bring shelter such as a beach tent. The sand can also be quite hot so both suitable walking footwear for the walk and sandles is advised. Don’t regret going and the views from the walk up and down are beautiful!
Jesse H — Google review
We visited this place yesterday, and it turned out to be a reminder not to rely too much on tourist guides, suggestions, or popular tips. The beach itself is, of course, beautiful, but it was so crowded and chaotic that it really took away from the experience. The parking lot is located a few hundred meters above the beach, and to get there you need to go down very steep stairs. One definitely has to be careful, especially for elderly visitors or those with small children. I actually witnessed a little boy falling and scraping his knees badly on the way down. On site, there is a bar, some chairs, and a toilet. The scenery is undeniably stunning – the rock formations, including the famous heart-shaped rock, are impressive. However, the sheer number of people, along with the constant arrival of boats unloading tourists, completely robs the place of its natural charm. There is no harmony, no energy, no peace. Despite the undeniable beauty, the river mouth is simply overcrowded with visitors. After about two hours we left, climbing back up the steep path to the parking lot (currently €3). Afterwards, we found another beach just 7 minutes away, where we were completely alone – and as the locals say, everyone can find their own beach here.
Mateusz D — Google review
Beautiful beach. From the parking lot, it’s a short hike down to the beach, with beautiful views along the hike. It’s all downhill to the beach and all uphill back, so be prepared. The beach gets very crowded after 9:30-10 AM, especially when the boats start to arrive and drop people off.
Lisa M — Google review
A true gem to visit while in Crete! Steps are a bit steep but with care can be done. We were in our beach flip-flops and no issues! The palm tree forest, the river( can actually walk thru it upstream for scenic view) and the beach are spectacular!
Alex G — Google review
Just no. That’s what comes to mind when I think about this beach. Overhyped, overcrowded, too much effort to reach and too little reward once you get there. The famous palm grove isn’t physically blocked off, but there are signs saying you can’t enter because of fire hazard. Of course, people ignore them and walk up the river from its mouth to snap photos of the palms. The water here is also colder than on most southern beaches, which doesn’t exactly make it inviting. Getting there is another issue. It’s a solid 15-minute walk each way, with the return being steep uphill. I’m a hiker, and even for me it was effort — I timed it. Expect uneven rocky stairs and a frustrating climb back if you’re not steady on your feet. If you’re absolutely set on visiting, skip the hike and use the boat service from Plakias. Otherwise, there are so many better options for your day. Souda Beach in the south, for example, is a far more enjoyable choice.

Easily the most magical place I’ve ever been with the most unique landscape EVER! Absolutely LOVED this spot and recommend exploring here if you’re in Crete!
Sidney K — Google review
Gorgeous beach with a river and many palm trees!! We loved it here, but 2 things worth mentioning: - water is super cold - you have to hike a bit in order to get to the beach
Lulu2410 — Google review
This place has so much potential, but unfortunately, it's being ruined by tourists who don’t seem to care. There was plastic floating in the water, which was really sad to see in what could be a magical spot. It was pretty overwhelming because it was crowded. The hike up can be intense, but it’s doable if you pace yourself. At the top, there’s a guy selling fruit and water — I highly recommend grabbing something from him. If you’re not up for the hike, I noticed there’s a boat service that picks up and drops off visitors. Overall, it is a beautiful location, but to be honest, I’m not sure I’d recommend it simply because of how busy and poorly treated it is. Definitely bring water shoes — the rocks in the water are slippery.

Patsos Gorge is a stunning natural wonder located in Crete, offering an adventurous hiking experience. The 1.5-kilometer trail takes you through a narrow gorge with wooden bridges and ladders, leading to a cave sanctuary. While the path is well-marked, it involves climbing and trekking, making it feel longer than its actual length. Hikers should be prepared for some challenging moments that may feel more like climbing than hiking, including using ropes and ladders at times.
My husband and I visited with an excursion from our cruise ship. I would recommend this with good tread. We enjoyed this hike and saw the church in a cave and made it to the first viewpoint which is a great view of a gorge. It is beautiful to hike and very shaded for most of the hike. There is a spot with picnic tables but many of them were covered in bird poop. There is also a fresh water fountain. Not for drinking but good to cool off with. The water was very cold.

This has so far been our family’s favorite hike in Crete. We took our very active 11 and 13 yo with us and they loved it. It took us an hour each way and was 4 mi total round trip to the reservoir and back. Make sure you follow the “south end” trail markings. It is a much clearer path than the “north end”. This hike is difficult. It requires all 4 extremities but delivers in views, fauna and scenery. Definitely worth the effort.
Alaina B — Google review
Very fun hiking with lots of rocks, but some parts are very slippery so you need to be careful. First part is easy and second is harder but with good hiking shoes it is enjoyable like some game with leaders and alpine ropes. Never go alone and best time is in the morning. You must return same way trough the Gorge back to parking. Last part is hardest. There is a lot of parking space and cute taverna when you finish your hike.

Visited mid July and there was almost no water in the creek so made it in 1 hour and 20 minutes back and forth. Apporx 2,50 km in one side, ~100m elevation gain. I had good trail running shoes on so it made relatively easy jumping on those rocks. I assume with water it would be much more difficult. In some places I saw water marks above my head. So, quite easy without water, no idea how it is with more water. Anyway, breathtaking views, worth a visit if you are physically active and are not afraid of some challenges!
Mindaugas J — Google review
Fun hike, the start is easy and mostly flat, the second part is more adventurous but very well equipped with ropes and ladders. We took our time and made it to the end in 1 hour and then back the same way 1 hour. The viewpoint is beautiful and worth the extra effort. Recommend to go there in the morning to hike from 10am to noon.
Agathe K — Google review
Absolutely recommend this hike, but only if you’re physically fit and have good shoes. It wasn’t hot at all, even at noon. Note that you need to return the same way you came. We completed it in just under 2 hours.

*hidden gem alert* This gorge definitely deserves more positive attention! For me, it was the most enjoyable gorge in Crete thanks to the variety along the way. You’ll come across a little church, have the chance to climb over rocks, and experience more adventure compared to the well-known Samaria and Imbros gorges, which are mostly just walking. A refreshing and fun alternative for anyone looking for something different!
Kirsten L — Google review
I had a blast going down the gorge. After a short stop to the chapel and a view point, the path brings us to a series of ladders and ropes to guide us through the gorge. No point to avoid getting your shoes wet at some point the only way through is to walk through the river (the water will get to your knees). Probably wise to not go there after a heavy rain

Kritsa Gorge is a 4 km long and narrow gorge located near the picturesque village of Kritsa, about 9.5 km southwest of Agios Nikolaos. The hike through the gorge takes just over an hour with some challenging points that verge on climbing rather than scrambling, so it's recommended for nimble hikers. The trail is clean and offers shaded spots for resting, despite a lack of water in mid-October.
Lovely hike up a dry stream bed, lined with pink oleanders; for the moderately fit. There are two loops you can do, the shorter one up the gorge and after some 1.8 km up the hill following the yellow markers, and the longer one: up the gorge all the way up to the tributary entering from the left (some 3.6 km); you can turn back here or turn around ant the gate with the yellow sign and walk up the hill on the northern side of the gorge (follow the red markers). Both loops bring you back to the car park down the ancient Minoan path. Stunning scenery, lots of all kinds of wildlife.

Nice scenic loop for some morning activity. We hike frequently and did the trail in 1hr 15min in running shoes. About half of the trail is shaded. Arrived at 10am and found parking on the road. Note that the drive up to the gorge entrance is a long, narrow, windy road.

One of my favourites. Parked at WTW: ///audibly.excluder.logs This was a 'there and back' walk first time and a more scenic but challenging return via a hillside path second time. Started off down a knarly stepped path for a couple hundred meters. Turn right at the bottom and follow the signs. Eventually come to an narrow gorge entrance obstructed with a goat fence. Ease the fence to allow entry and simply follow the gorge. There are some challenging parts with a little slipping and sliding on heavily worn and polished stone. There are also one or two areas with hand and foot ironwork steps to aid access. Overall, nothing that most could not manage and kids would love. I continued through the gorge until it somewhat flattened out and followed olive groves uphill to a village called Tapi or Tapes. Returned on one occasion the sameway and another time by following a path taking a scenic route along the side and top of the gorge returning to the same start point. The out and back return measured about 7km. The return via the gorge top measuring about 8km.

Awesome, beautiful hike up this amazing series of rock carvings. Loved it first thing in the morning, we had the hike to ourselves. Worked great as an up the Gorge, then out and around back down to the parking on the road.

A very scenic path that took us around 3h by taking our time. You can park in the street just south from the entrance. Feasible for anyone with an acceptable physical condition, despite certain parts that were a bit tricky (slippery rocks). The path is clearly indicated and it's impossible to get lost. If you want to have a good time in Crete, going here is a brillant idea.
Rémi L — Google review
Good hiking, not crowded, parking places are limited by the side road, but finding place was not a problem. Longer loop of around 6 km can take up to 3 hours with moderate pace. The first 1.5 km or so are the most interesting, but scenery varies if you take longer loop. Have at least light hiking shoes and lots of vater for hydration. Farmers installed some high wire fences across the track but in many instances you can find improvised gates.
Giedrius S — Google review
Nice chilled trail with small "climbs" here and there, so even though it's not too challenging it gives you a feeling of accomplishment. Rocks are sometimes a little bit slippery but regular training shoes will do the job as you can use support of your hands. Gorge is just max 2 km path and then you go up to hike among olive trees. Don't get discouraged by the fences on the way. They are just there to keep goats inside for their grazing time. You just follow yellow marks and red arrows and can easily walk through that area, but remember to close the "gates" behind you every time.

It's not every day you get to scramble your way through a gorge, but if you're up for it, the Kritsa Gorge is a blast. Forget a leisurely stroll, this hike is an adventure. You'll be climbing over polished boulders, squeezing through tight rock passages, and at a couple of spots, you'll even need to use a rope and a small metal ladder. It's a proper workout, but in the best possible way. The scenery is just incredible. The gorge walls tower over you, so narrow at times you feel like you're in a secret passageway. And the trees and plants that have found a way to grow among the rugged cliffs just add to the whole feeling of being somewhere wild and special. We did the circular route, following the red paint dots on the way in. When we emerged from the gorge, the path back along the old Minoan road gave us these amazing, wide-open views of the Kritsa valley and the olive groves. It was a perfect way to end the loop. A few tips from our trip: Wear good shoes. Seriously, your regular sneakers might not cut it. The rocks are smooth and can be slippery. You need something with a decent grip. Don't forget water! The return path is pretty exposed to the sun, and you'll be working up a sweat. Start early. We went in the morning to beat the worst of the heat, and it was a great call. It also means you'll probably have the gorge mostly to yourself. Give yourself enough time. It took us about 2–3 hours at a relaxed pace, with plenty of stops for photos. All in all, if you're looking for a fun, active day out with a big payoff in terms of views and a real sense of accomplishment, you can't go wrong with Kritsa Gorge. And afterwards, the charming village of Kritsa is the perfect place for a well-deserved meal.

Sarakina Meskla Gorge, located in the village of Meskla in Chania, is a small but beautiful natural attraction that offers a relatively easy 20-minute hike. The gorge is known for its stunning natural scenery and can be accessed by driving past Agia leading Omalos. It's also close to the village Mirtos and provides a real challenge for hikers.
The hike through the gorge is quite short but very shady and especially the small canyon is very impressive. It's best to park in the free parking lot close to the Taverna Halaris. If you follow Google maps to the gorge, you will end up on a very narrow dirt road.

What a beautiful trail it is! 10 out of 10. Easy to park by the church, then follow the road up until you see a sign about the trail. On the map it says 1 out of 5 easy. The trail is not that easy at all. It has a nice elevation. There was water in the gorge when we went and we had to jump rock to rock. The kids loved it. One of the reviews said that there are no marks where the trail is. That is not true. The whole trail is marked up: on rocks or trees every few steps. We played a game who could spot the next marker and it was fun. The trail does not end when you come to the paved road. It continues on that road for a bit and then goes back to the woods. Anyway, we loved this trail. Very beautiful and fun!

This was my first gorge I went to on August and it was good! It was really quiet and we were almost alone there on whole trip. Really relaxing even there was sweating points you had to rise higher quite steep. We spent totally about 2,5 hour on this gorge. Taverna Halaris next to a church was also a good restaurant to have a lunch after a hike. 🫰 I'll do an own review of that.
Kirsikka K — Google review
After lunch at Rizinia, we drove to a church nearby and strolled back up the slope. We actually noticed that there were several couples who walked back down the slope after lunch at Rizinia. It was probably that they did the hike and ended with a sumptuous meal at Rizinia. Well, we did the opposite. Fuel up before the hike right? Following Google Map, we trekked back up the slope after parking the car and we found the entrance to the hike of Sarakina Gorge. In fact, there was an elderly couple in front of us and they were walking up the slope so quickly that we actually lost them along the way. Really fit elderly couple this. From the entrance, it was another 10 minutes before we reached Sarakina Gorge. The river was dry when we reached this time which allowed us to walk into the gorge without much trouble at all. It was actually quite exciting to stroll into the gorge and take some amazing photos. While we didn’t go through the entire gorge, it was indeed an experience and reminded us of our visit to Antelope Canyon previously – another geological structure, carved out by the meandering river... Really well maintained and marked hike! One of the best we have seen on Crete. The beginning through the gorge is indeed probably most spectacular but we really enjoyed the walk up and the views over the mountains! There was no water in the gorge beginning of march.

We love this place. It’s beautiful, peaceful and calm. A well marked path helps you along the way. We parked in the car park of the monastery in Meskla and the entrance is a short walk up the hill, along the road, from there. We went inside the monastery and left a donation. It’s a steady hike but it’s a bonus if you’re fit and wearing the right footwear! Take plenty of water!!!

Very beautiful path, perfect for those, who are looking for a short hike in the shade. Almost half of it is in the forest. The trail is easy, just last 500m is uphill. Really clean and well marked path!

Probably the best time to visit is around spring because the stream is pretty dried out during the summer. Nature is beautiful, but there’s a rocky path so proper shoes are advised! Didn’t expect to see that many flies while passing the gorge itself…

Nestled on the eastern side of Crete, Zakros Gorge is a stunning natural wonder that beckons adventurers and nature lovers alike. Spanning 11 kilometers (6.1 miles) with an elevation gain of 350 meters (1148 feet), this moderate hike typically takes around 3.5 hours to complete. As you traverse the gorge, you'll be captivated by its remarkable rock formations and breathtaking views, especially if you start from Kato Zakros via the Old Road.
(Translated by Google) A beautiful gorge with amazing rock formations. I cycled, or rather, climbed, up it on my mountain bike, but I only recommend it for adventurers. 😱🤣 So please don't try this. At the beginning of June, the gorge only had a little water in the upper reaches; otherwise, the streambed is dry. (Original) Schöne Schlucht mit tollen Felsformationen. Ich bin mit dem MTB nach oben geradelt, oder besser gekraxelt, ist aber nur für Abenteurer empfehlenswert. 😱🤣 Also bitte nicht nachmachen. Die Schlucht hatte jetzt Anfang Juni nur etwas Wasser im Oberlauf, ansonsten ist das Bachbett trocken.

We did it following a route we found in the All Trails app. The first part is fun following the gorge path. There is some rock climbing and you need to be careful if you're not experienced as is a high climb. On the way back, the route took us through the upper side of the mountain where there is no shadow, so you'll need to take plenty of water and be prepared with a good hat and good shoes for the descent. Overall, is a moderate hike with beautiful views.

(Translated by Google) Perhaps a bit overrated?! It's very manageable, for all ages, not particularly spectacular or varied, and well-marked...!!! It's worth bearing in mind that the gorge faces west-east (or vice versa), so the sun 🌞 shines on it all day, and the temperatures are accordingly high! The beach and its tavernas are definitely a worthwhile destination... (Original) Vielleicht ein bisschen überbewertet?! Gorge Rouvas start point is a challenging 7-hour hike available from April to November, beginning at Lake Votomos and ending in Rouvas forest. It's not recommended for children. Some hikers prefer starting the trek from Zaros Lake, enjoying the manual waterfalls along the way and envisioning a refreshing swim during summer.
Wonderful hiking trail. I took the black/yellow route up north. 5 hours in total. Don't rush this hike since there is so much to see.

Did this hike but started from zaros Lake! Great Gorge hike 🚶‍♀️ manual waterfalls. Would be amazing to swim in the summer
Amber D — Google review
Beautiful hike, extremely happy we did it. Parking is easy near the start, and the level is rated ‘4/5’ but 95% was very doable, with some small challenging parts. We saw a whole group of retirees effortlessly Nordic walk past us, as well as a couple with kids. At around 600m climb you are rewarded with a forest with a stream and picknick tables, which took us a bit over 2h to get to. After that the quality of the path was worse and difficult to find, so we just headed back down. Be aware that the black/yellow signs quickly disappear and you should follow the red and red/white dots. There is also a misdirection (see image) in the beginning, don’t follow that but instead continue along the gorge. Take enough water with you - in June (30 degrees C) we went through about 2.5L per person.

Exploring the «Rouvas Gorge» is done on foot. North of the town of Zaros in the south of Crete, the walk starts in a northerly direction. You can choose where to start: many people start from Zaros at Lake Votomos, but we drove to the monastery «Agiou Nikolaou» by car. This is where the actual gorge begins, which was coloured pink in the first part by the countless flowering oleanders. The path is not very well marked. But it is quite busy with walkers here, so you can easily follow the other walkers uphill. The walk first goes through a gorge, but in between it is an easy walking path along a mountain slope and the view becomes increasingly beautiful and wide. The walking path slowly climbs further and the slope becomes increasingly steeper. For people with a fear of heights, it may be time to turn around. And then the path dives back into the gorge to the chapel «Agios Ioannis». But here at the beginning of the second part of the gorge the walk ended for us. The rocks were too slippery and too big for us and we are not good climbers. After more than half of the walk we returned via the same path we had come to the monastery «Agiou Nikolaou». But we do not regret at all that we did not walk the entire walk. The first half was already wonderfully beautiful. And we would rather come home in one piece than break a leg.

(Translated by Google) Although most of the stream dried up due to the gorge in our case, the hike is absolutely recommended! We drove to the monastery a little further up to start the hike. From there it is a 6 kilometer route to the end point of the gorge. Almost 600 meters in altitude have to be overcome on narrow paths. Please be sure to wear sturdy shoes and plenty of water! Anyone who dares to take the tour will be rewarded with beautiful oleander groves and protected oak forests as well as incredible views.

(Translated by Google) After reading a review a few days ago, we were scared. The hike is about 12km round trip. However, having completed the entire hike today, we're leaving delighted. We are from Alsace and are used to steep mountain paths. Admittedly, we don't recommend this hike at all for families because it's dangerous for children. The safety barriers are almost non-existent because they're too old. We also recommend good hiking shoes and plenty of water in case of extreme heat. I drank 2 liters of water at 21 degrees. Be careful, the trail markings are aging; we took the wrong starting point at first. When you're facing the porch of Lake Votomos, walk along the lake on the left and pass the bar. The entrance to the trail is on the left (wooden signs). After the first iron gate, head left. Then follow the red dots on the ground or on the trees to avoid making a mistake. You'll pass the chapel of Agios Nikolaos, past iron gates, to reach the gorge, the goats, and then the forest. Halfway through the forest, you'll come across an area filled with tables. Simply go to the chapel and follow the signs, which will lead you back on the almost identical path to the outward journey. We hope you enjoy your hike, as the landscapes, flora, and fauna are magnificent, even if the journey is tiring.

(Translated by Google) 🚨 Attention! The path is extremely dangerous in some sections!! 🚨 We are experienced hikers with a good level of fitness, but we did not expect the path to be in such poor condition. There used to be railings, but they are now broken and rotten. So you have to look carefully where you are stepping. Hiking poles are mandatory. If you set off from Zaros towards the Rouvas Forest, the first half of the route is strenuous but easy to do. After that, however, there are long passages where you walk on slippery gravel directly along the slope. There is NO safety, NO ropes, NO railings. Some of the paths directly on the slope are about 30 cm wide and you have to squeeze along the rock. We found it very tiring and will never do the hike again as one wrong step is enough to fall hundreds of meters!! We were happy that we got home safely. The Rouvas Forest is beautiful, but to see it I would recommend driving up and walking into the forest. (Original) 🚨 Achtung! Sodass man genau schauen muss wo man hin tritt.

The lighthouse is so beautiful!! Built in the late 1800s, the site has been preserved and maintained and is now a great tourist attraction. Would 10/10 recommend visiting at dusk to see the sunset on the village! The lighting is incredible! Lots of little windows to look out and see the sunset as well!

Nice enough for a spot of lunch or a glass of wine. Maybe a quick walk around the town. 15min on top of lunch is plenty if you eat in the harbor area. Pretty much all the pics were from the table or close to. Note the blue car with no plates....! We were very lucky a kind local explained the parking rules. In short you can't park anywhere convenient, round red/blue sign is resident only. No clue how you get your plates back. The map is athe only useful parking we found.

Very nice lighthouse. There is a short walk to get to the lighthouse, you walk by the wall on the one side, and sea on the other. I went there when it was quite hot, maybe you should visit early in the day, or late in the day. Access to the lighthouse at the end is locked, but you have a nice view on the city of Chania and onto the sea.

Very picturesque place to visit. The sun sets right by the lighthouse, when viewed from the boardwalk. We walked the levy all the way to the lighthouse, which was enjoyable, but also tricky once the sun went down and we walked back in the dark (pavement and bricks are uneven). We did not pay to go inside the lighthouse. We had a very nice outing just walking around the area.

Pleasant walk to reach the lighthouse. The lighthouse itself is closed for visiting, but while walking there you may walk the walls and have a nice view either towards the open sea or towards the Venetian port. Do recommend the stroll before sunset.

A bit of a walk to the lighthouse, over some bumpy cobbles, but otherwise easy walk. Nice views. You can't get access to the lighthouse as it has a locked gate but can't walk up to it and stand on walls leading to it, with breathtaking views out to see and marina.

Nudism is allowed here, and visitors can enjoy a unique tavern on an islet.
We were there today and everything is open as usual. Sun beds, Mermaid Taverna etc. Beautiful beach. Nudist too.

Very beautiful. We stayed at Loutro and took the boat taxi for 2 hours to Sweet Water Beach. We did some snorkeling which was pretty, however the gasoline from the boats make the snorkeling a bit annoying. Not many fish out there. Watch out for the lamb as they come for the food.
Meytal M — Google review
The beach is good and it’s not super popular. It can be accessed either by a hike (25-30 mins) or by a boat. There were not so many people coming by boat in the beginning of September so overall by 12:00 there were probably ~30-40 people overall on the beach (and the beach is pretty long). Part of the beach closer to Sfakia is taken by nudists. What is pretty unfortunate is that a large part of the beach is closed by a fence with tables that forbid camping there (likely due to risk of falling rocks). The set of two sunbeds and an umbrella costs 10 euro and you must pay to the owner of trattoria who pretty much took over the beach. It is possible to just lay on your towels but there is not so much space and most of the space in the shadow of the mountains/trees is closed with the fence (first tile I have seen it). Either this is a beach with a very high risk of stones falling down, or the owner of the sunbeds wants to maximise the profit. The water was pretty clear although there was a lot of garbage like tyres on the bottom of the sea. The beach itself is not very picturesque. There is a free shower. Overall it might be worth a 1-1.5h ride because the hike to the beach is beautiful but definitely this should not be your top priority to visit if you are based far away

Perfect. We areived with the boat, there are seats and shadow, a bar where dribk and eat.

Beautiful secluded beach that’s well worth a visit! You can get there by ferry, but we parked at the start of the trail and walked down. Park by the road and take some trainers or hiking shoes because the path is quite rocky. It isn’t a difficult hike but go slowly as parts of it is quite steep and you walk along the cliff. It’s about 30 minutes down to the beach. As you finish the trail, you enter the nudist side of the beach but keep walking towards Mermaid Bar at the other end and you can sit on some sun loungers away from the nudist half. Beware of the goats if you have food in your bag, we were confronted by a pretty aggressively hungry goat who chased me and my bag of food around the beach! The stones are very hot so take flip flops to walk to the sea and enjoy the crystal clear water!

A little piece of heaven hidden in a cove. Crystal clear turquoise waters. Complete serenity and calm. Only a couple dozen umbrella settings or so. You can only get here by boat or tracking a relatively easy but still very rocky trail for about 20 mins. Boats run several times a day and will offer a taxi service to drive you up to where you parked your car. Part of the beach is clothing optional.
Adam H — Google review
Very nice beach, easy to spend the whole day here with a good book, we parked at the top and made our way down on foot rather than take the boat. It is best you take a pair of trainers of walking boots with you for the hike down and plenty of water. On the beach you'll find a boat, here you can purchase refreshments and food if you don't take your own. We spent the entire day here, water is lovely, nudist beach on the left hand side of the beach.

Wow, wow, wow! One of my all time favourite beaches. The hike from the trail head is 25 minutes and it is stunning and not so difficult but be sure to wear shoes and not thongs or sandals and carry everything in your back so you have 2 hands free. When you arrive at the beach you will think it’s just ok and nothing special. The sand is greyish and there are pebbles. The reward is when you enter the water and get past the rocky entrance. The waters are some of the cleanest, most crystalline I have ever seen. As you swim further out the water changes from aqua to turquoise to azure, all the while being crystal clear as if you’re in a swimming pool. The visibility is incredible, even more than 100 metres off shore. This beach feels quite wild, it is very long and is not accessible by car, so it never feels crowded (last week of August, first week of September 2023). There are fresh water springs under the sand so you can take a fresh water shower on the beach. Umbrella and 2 chairs €10, and even arriving at 1pm there were still free beds. At the end of the beach are toilets and a very good taverna, the food is delicious and the staff are lovely. You get on and off the very on the same jetty as the taverna, in fact the taverna is the jetty. The taverna end seemed more for families. The other end of umbrellas that you come to first if you’re hiking from Sfakia is more clothing optional. I love this beach. Go if you want dramatic scenery, peace and quiet, crystalline water and a memorable experience!

Agiofaraggo Beach is a secluded and wonderful destination located 80 km southwest of Heraklion town near the village of Kali Limenes. Accessible after a 20-minute car ride and a 30-minute walk through a beautiful dried-out canyon, this rocky beach offers clear waters and is great for snorkeling. The area lacks tourist facilities, so visitors should bring all necessary supplies.
One of the most beautiful places I've been to. Quiet. Not a lot of tourists. Historical site as you walk through the gorge. The water was incredibly clear and it was a perfect day. The drive in was tricky.
Lisa S — Google review
Beautiful beach with pebbles and turquoise water. Very difficult access from the main road by car, approx. 6 km. From the parking lot on foot another 2-3 km. No phone signal. Very difficult in the heat.
Adrian D — Google review
Go prepared. Don't park under the trees "Kri-Kri" (wild goats) might climb the car to eat from the trees. At least an umbrella, water and some snacks or food and maybe proper shoes to walk through the small canyon easier. Enjoy and leave the place please clean. 😀 😃

WARNING; road in very bad shape! The road to this beach is a very bumpy, Sandy, rocky dirt road of 6+km. After which it's still a 1.5+km walk in the burning sun. There is no cell phone service, no drinks past the parking. No utilities at all. But... The beach is one of the most beautiful I've seen so far!
Landerik B — Google review
Nothing to compare with Balos beach or Elafonissi beach so it’s average compared to these but still nice to see. The road is only very bad in few places. Of course the condition of the road is terrible but it’s manageable with any car.
Kristina P — Google review
The drive to the beach was not so good, but probably better than the drive to Balos still. The walk to the beach is mostly flat but the heat made it quite uncomfortable. There’s also a cute church to be spotted along the way. The beach was quiet and clean, though a bit colder than others that I had been to during this trip. Alas, nature always gets 5 stars.
Duy H — Google review
To get to the beach there is about a 5 km drive on a dirt road, at a certain point the road splits, follow directions and go to the right. The road is very rocky but doable. Then there is parking and a little kiosk where you can buy something to eat and drink. Walk though the gorge for a km and you arrive at the beach. Not much shade so better to go earlier in the day.
Sheroo W — Google review
Not worth the way. If your are traveling from Heraklion it definetly takes a lot of time to get there and if you don‘t have an SUV, you better are an absolute experienced driver. The path there is quite rough and we had to stop around 1.5 km away from the parking lot as we could not go further with our car. Also, there is no toilette near by. View is impressive, the water nice…but nothing that you wouldn‘t be able to see in other places.

Mount Ida, also known as Mount Psiloritis, stands proudly as the highest peak in Crete at an impressive 8,058 feet. This majestic mountain is not just a feast for the eyes with its stunning sea views and unique geological formations; it also holds a significant place in Greek mythology. Legend has it that Zeus was born in one of its caves, making this site sacred to Titaness Rhea.
Not an easy hike but the view is breathtaking. We went up trough E4 trail, it is quite easy to loose the track. I would be able to do it without gps navigation. Terrain is pretty harsh the whole duration of the track.

WARNING! If you see lots of snow, don't climb without hiking poles and or crampons at the bare minimum... Climbed mid April, 2025. Incredible 360° view of the entire island, ringing the bell is awesome. People are not lying about the wind at the top. Once you're on those peaks it goes from t-shirt weather to jacket weather (below 0°) VERY fast. Anyway, onto the dangerous part. For mid April, the amount of snow and ice was unexpected and quite frankly, absurd. At points my step fell in thigh deep and I had to awkwardly dig my legs out of the snow. However, the worst part is that the trail goes overtop of a snow ridge where one slip or wrong step can lead you to a 20 metre fall to the rocks below. (See attached picture) I went through this with just hiking boots, was warned multiple times by returning hikers to maybe rethink my choices, but for reasons extremely personal to me, I did not turn back. Luckily, I was fine, I just took it slow and carefully. Anyway, I don't want to discourage anyone. Just do it with equipment or in the summer. Don't be an idiot like me and have fun and enjoy :)
Lu R — Google review
Good views, but the hike sadly goes up and down the same way, making it slightly boring. Also, lots of animal poop on the way (probably not just goats) which also attracts a lot of insects. You need almost 2 hours going up from the refuge.

I have climbed the highest peak in Crete and I can say it is worth it, but be prepared for strong wind and rocky terrain.
Balkanska T — Google review
Nice hike, it's long 9 km from Psiloritis summit trailhead (north), elevation is about 870m, it takes 5 hours normal pace. The beginning of the route has a steep climb and it is quite windy below the top.
Denda29 G — Google review
I love this place, view from Mount Ida is magnificent, you can literally see the whole region 🤩
Marko F — Google review
Definitely a great hike. Not the easiest, but absolutely breathtaking. The route is clearly marked by the red dots on the rocks and yellow arrows, in case of sharper turns. On the day of our hike there was barely any wind, but the temperature was definitely a few degrees lower than even halfway down. Bring a windstopper, layers, snacks and hydration, as you’re definitely going to need it. Also - goes without saying - hike up is easier than hiking down
Tom K — Google review
This is a great hike, it is probably more difficult than others, and requires some planing, some good hiking shoes, and clothing, but the most important is to plan the route ahead of times, there is poor cell reception, we got off trail for a bit, but were able to get back on it. On top I would give it 4.5 stars, since the shores are so far away and you cannot clearly see even on a clear day, bring some binoculars. One thing that surprised us was the amount of ladybugs on the summit, did not expect to see much life up there, but there were tens of thousands. I would go again.

Ha Gorge, located on the eastern part of Crete island in Greece, is a steep and narrow gorge with technical canyoning routes and waterfalls. It is situated on the west slope of the Thripty mountain range and boasts rich flora and fauna. The gorge is quite short, around 700 meters, but falls 325 meters in that distance. Access to this geological fault is extremely difficult, making it unsuitable for amateur attempts to enter.
Visited the area when there wasn't any water. The whole side of the massive mountain is steep and provides shadow and source of water for many animals. Met few goats there. An amazing scenery of the coast. It's kinda windy there. There is also a small chapel in front of the mountain. Parked next to the chapel.

Beautiful to see, but not accessible without equipment and experience. Information panel visible, large geological fault creates the beautiful and sudden height difference between valley and plateau.

Very beautiful place. If you are coming with a car, look for a church of holy spirit and park your car there. Amazing sight much better from here than from suggested Monastiraki village.

Short and nice must see place. Nothing really special, but almost unique shape of this gorge you will hardly find somewhere else. You can climb up to 10-15 meters to the first water basin. And that's all, because further way only for alpinist. Leave the car 50 meters before small church. Btw this church is open, just pull the door.

Incredible gorge! You'll spot it from a distance as you drive on the main roads. Definitely worth a small detour and a shirt excursion to see up close. Put it on the list of things to come back to and explore by canyoneering down from above! Magnificent!
Justin W — Google review
The Ha Gorge is unusual in that it is extremely narrow, quite short (around 700 metres) and falls 325 metres in that short distance. It isn't possible to walk the gorge; this is one for abseiling and wetsuits. The narrowness and poor access makes this a difficult subject for photography, though there are spots above, below and at the junction with the Mastoras Gorge where photography is possible. For most people, the gorge will remain just a dark slice through the massif of Thripti seen when travelling to or from Ierapetra. Perhaps this is just as well: the gorge is home to several endemic species of plant not found elsewhere in Crete.

Facilities such as shops, toilets, and resting areas are available along the way.
One of the best trails on the island. Whole day trip. It took us about 5,5 hours to walk through the whole gorge. Few toilets and places to refill water on the way. Bus tickets available to buy at the bar just by the entrance.

The four stars are for the overall duration which is at least 14 hours from your hotel and back. It is up to you to decide if that worth your time. Overall it is a great hike, no doubt. Everything is well organised on the way, super safe with great, spectacular and unique views. There is plenty of fresh free water sources, trust me you will need that. But then you get trapped by the ferry and bus schedule and, worst of all, they are usually late at departure. Things to know: 16 kilomtres is a lot even on flat land so be ready for a big effort. Is getting extremely hot on the way, just be ready. Some say no need of hiking shoes, but not having them makes the descent pretty hard and unpleasant in some places. But yes,it is still possible and safe without hiking shoes. Last mile is a real pain due to the extreme heat. Luckily there is a small bus caring people for 2 euros, but you would pay even 20 to get to the port.
Ionel M — Google review
Parking was super easy – you can drive right up to the gate (departure fee €5 per family). Entry tickets to the gorge are €6 each. The hike itself was absolutely worth it! Most of the trail goes downhill, so your calves will feel it, but it’s manageable. Even our 11-year-old did the whole hike with just a few minor complaints. It took us about 5 hours. Along the way there are lots of spots to refill your water bottle and a few toilets (a bit limited, but available). When you reach the village at the bottom, it’s easy to buy boat tickets and grab some food. We had already purchased the bus tickets back up to the parking area where we left our car. Highly recommend.

We booked 2 nights at Omalos town, 5 minutes drive from the Samaria entrance. We started at 9 a.m. , we have thought, it was already late because the Hotel told Us start at 7-8. We eated breakfast first, At the entrace we have paid 10€ /person. We have 1,5 li water and some snacks. The 7 Hours journey is mostly descend, so we try our best to keep our Neck elivated from time to time. Anyway we were always on guard for falling stones in case. The Park is good organized , in every 3 or 4 km, station a medic personel. It has an abundant source of drinking water, so you will never get drought. The 1st half of the journey was only more on downhill rough dusty path. The best highlights are the Iron gates and the Old Samaria Village on the 2nd half of the journey. My partner's Hands became swollen because of the walking position and the Saniter told Us to cool off the Hands with cold water of Samaria. Once we reached the exit gate, We walked a bit until to the Bus stop and bought the Bus ticket to the Pier area. From the Pier we took the fastcraft boat to Sougia 40mins and from Sougia we took the Bus 1,5 hours back to the Parking area of Samaria National Park to get to our Car. At the End of the Day, we rewarded our trip to a satisfying Dinner.

The most beautiful hike we’ve ever had! You should be in an ok shape to do this hike, we saw people that were struggling to complete it. The park is well planned, had rangers at every pit stop (had one every hour) and fire hose in case of a fire. There are water along the trail for drinking. It took us 7 hours to complete. Important things they don’t tell you: 1. The road there is as beautiful as the hike! I recommend arriving around 6 am so you can make stops on the observatories. 2. It’s freezing at the top. When we hiked it was actually warm with a nice breeze. 3. I cannot stress this enough: wear hiking shoes! I wore palladium as I thought it will do. It didn’t. My feet killed me. 4. We arrived on time for the 17:30 ferry but it was sold out! Maybe that day was busier than usual, but we had to wait till the 19:10 ferry which was tiring.

Endlessly spectacular scenery, a long walk and your legs might ache for a few days, but it's worth it. We got the 5am public bus from Chania, which was maybe a bit early as it's quite chilly in the mountains (take a jumper), it was a cold hour in the dark waiting for the cafe to open / park gates to open at 7am. Then it's about a 6 hour walk with many water refill stops. Not hard a hard walk, all basically down hill, we wore running trainers for the thicker soles, but saw people walking in jeans and normal trainers. Take swimming stuff to get in the sea at the end! Then the ferry to Agia Roumeli and the public bus back to Chania.

What a hike!? The sights were absolutely stunning 🤩; beautiful mountains and beautiful Gorges buttt it was a very very long (18KM+), very very dusty and very very tiring hike… not to mention a bit dangerous too! At the start of the hike there are helmets that you can use for free, as well as signs everywhere along the way that you need to be careful for rocks falling down. What did we like about the hike, I must definitely say the sights of the Gorge, with lots of beautiful nature but what we didn’t like was that we didn’t really see much of those sights since we had to look down with basically each step you take, this is because of the very very rocky road that made it super tricky. There are a few resting spots but nothing that you can buy there, so make sure you bring plenty of water and food! Nice thing is, the mountain water that is drinkable and very cooling; but note that you cannot swim in it! We were the first to be picked up by the touring company, (06:15u) and the last to be dropped off (21:00u).. so it was a very long day.. and then Recovery started! Our calve muscles were super sore for at least days.. All and all, a great experience but not one for the faint hearted!

Katholiko Bay is a stunning destination in Crete, offering crystal clear waters and breathtaking scenery. The hike to the bay begins at the Gouverneto Monastery and passes by the Memorial Tomb, providing an easy-to-follow path with rewarding views. While the descent to the water can be challenging due to steep rocks, visitors are captivated by the beauty of the bay. Although swimming is officially prohibited, many still indulge in snorkeling and cooling off in the water.
Photos look amazing. Get there early ,as gate access will close at 630pm. Take good footwear as the track is steep and has loose gravel. Water is a must. Tickets are $2.50 euro and signs not recovering swimming. Beware if you don't turn left at the small town, you will end up a military base that's fill of goats and hordes of cats. Access and photos are frowned upon.

The cove is stunning and absolutely worth the visit. The hike down the gorge is a bit demanding but rewards you with amazing viewpoints – allow around 30/40 minutes down and the same back up. At the entrance (€2.50), it is clearly stated and reminded that swimming is forbidden, out of respect for the spirituality of the place and the nearby monastery. It’s a pity that many visitors choose to ignore this rule. Make sure to admire the color of the water – it’s breathtaking.

A great place to relax have a swim and to do some cliff diving. The water was clean and enjoyable but the thing you have t be aware of are the goats. They will definitely eat everything you have and poop on your towels. But all in all we had a great time there

A challenging but fun hike to the beach. Flip-flops and sandals are not recommended. Parking is easy. The beach is beautiful, but if it’s windy, swimming is impossible.
Emil A — Google review
Visiting Katholiko Gorge was an amazing experience! The gorge is surrounded by rugged cliffs and lush vegetation, making it a peaceful and picturesque destination, not to mention the crystal-clear water bay at the end of the trail. It's about 20 km from Chania, and the drive there was beautiful, with winding roads offering lovely views along the way. The road was in good condition, making the trip easy and pleasant. Something worth mentioning is that there is no phone signal in the area! We didn’t mind, as this made us focus and enjoy the experience even more. But it’s good to keep in mind if you’re planning a solo trip there. When we arrived at Katholiko Gorge, we found plenty of free parking spaces near the entrance. There is an entrance fee of 2.5 € per person; we paid 5 € for both of us. From the parking area, it’s just a short walk to the first viewpoint, where you can start your hike down into the gorge. There are several viewpoints along the path where you can stop, catch your breath, and take stunning photos of the surrounding landscape. The hike is suitable for all ages, though some trails might be a bit challenging for very young children or seniors, especially the part leading to the bay. I wouldn't recommend this for kids or those not in good health, as some parts are quite difficult. Most people stop at the old monastery. The first stop is at the new monastery, only a few minutes' walk from the parking area. Next, we continued to the cave, a 15 mn hike from the monastery. The trail is an easy, well-marked path, paved for the most part, and manageable for most people in good health. The cave was fascinating, with a cool and refreshing feel, and you can spot the “bear” rock formation here. After the cave, we took the trail leading to the old monastery. This hike takes about 40 mn and consists of paved stairs for the most part, though without handrails. It’s not very difficult as long as you stay on the path and avoid getting too distracted by the scenery and photo opportunities, and get lost as we did. 😂 However, the effort was worth it. The old monastery, nestled in the cliffs, had an ancient, mystical vibe and offered incredible views of the gorge below. Finally, we continued to the bay at the end of the trail, which took about 60 minutes from the old monastery. This part of the hike was the most challenging, with uneven terrain and a few steep sections. Proper footwear is essential here, as the trail becomes rocky and slippery. I wouldn’t recommend bringing kids on this part of the trail. The bay at the end of the trail was absolutely stunning. The crystal-clear turquoise water was perfect for swimming, and the serene atmosphere made it a perfect place to relax. This spot is really Instagrammable, so make sure to take plenty of pictures. Swimming in the cool, refreshing water was a highlight of our visit. Bringing water shoes was a great idea, as this is a rocky area. It's important to note that Katholiko Gorge does not have any facilities, so you should pack your own food and snacks. There are not many trees for shade along the trail, and no shade at all around the bay. Additionally, there are no places to get water, so make sure to bring plenty. We were able to get some water at the entrance where we paid the fee. The staff were really nice and refilled our bottles. Make sure to come prepared with enough water and snacks. It also gets really hot during the summer months, so it might be a good idea to start this hike very early in the morning. Overall, our visit to Katholiko Gorge was amazing. The mix of natural beauty, historical sites, and the serene bay made it a memorable experience. If you're ever in Crete, especially around Chania, I highly recommend visiting this beautiful gorge. Just be prepared for the hike and take your time to enjoy the breathtaking scenery along the way. Don’t forget to bring plenty of water, a hat, proper shoes, and sunscreen! See our experience and check out the gorge before visiting, we made a video about it on YouTube.➡️ https://youtu.be/H0R87rnyuGA?si=ju-gEtR0df7M42w2

One of the most beautiful places on earth! The 1 hour hike from the monastery to the cliff bay (it's NOT a beach) is exhausting, but totally worth it. Entry fee is 2,5€ per person. After the ruins of the old St. John's monastery the path requires surefootedness and good footwear. Officially, swimming in the bay is forbidden, but people do it anyway. And let's be honest: The monastery is kilometers away, there are no monks who could be offended by it and if God made this beautiful place, I'm sure he wanted people to enjoy it 😉

Katholiko Beach, located in Crete, is a hidden gem that offers a truly remarkable experience for nature lovers and those seeking a tranquil escape. With its awe-inspiring scenery and rich historical significance, this beach is definitely worth a visit. Getting to Katholiko Beach requires a bit of an adventure. It is tucked away in a secluded cove and can be accessed via a scenic hiking trail. The journey itself is part of the charm, as you'll be surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and lush vegetation. The trail takes you through rugged terrain and ancient ruins, adding an element of exploration to your visit. One of the best things about Katholiko Beach is that it is relatively untouched by mass tourism. As a result, the beach maintains its pristine beauty and serene atmosphere. The crystal-clear turquoise waters invite you to take a refreshing dip, and the soft golden sand is perfect for lounging and sunbathing. It's an idyllic spot for relaxation and unwinding. Travel time to Katholiko Beach can vary depending on your starting point. If you're staying in Chania, it typically takes around 45 minutes to an hour to reach the beach by car. The drive itself is quite scenic, offering glimpses of the stunning Cretan landscape along the way. Alternatively, you can opt for a guided tour or arrange transportation to ensure a hassle-free journey. In terms of access, it's important to note that reaching Katholiko Beach requires a moderate level of physical fitness. The hiking trail can be steep and uneven in some sections, so wearing comfortable shoes and bringing plenty of water is recommended. However, the effort is well worth it, as you'll be rewarded with the beauty and tranquility of the beach once you arrive. While there is no entrance fee to access Katholiko Beach, it's important to be mindful of the surrounding environment and respect its natural preservation. Remember to take any trash with you and leave only footprints behind to help maintain the beach's pristine condition. In conclusion, Katholiko Beach in Crete is a true hidden gem that offers a unique and rewarding experience. Its secluded location, natural beauty, and historical significance make it a must-visit destination. Just be prepared for a bit of adventure and make sure to respect the environment during your visit.

Really nice experience. The path is very rocky and you should wear stable footwear, but we were absolutely flashed by the caves and the nature. The way down was exhausting for the joints, the way up for your cardiovascular system, especially in summer 😁 but still… the nature.. the water in the bay.. would recommend. Even if it’s forbidden to swim in the bay… I guess nobody cares. Perfect for snorkeling. The caves are also nice too cool down a bit.

Embark on an unforgettable adventure along the Hiking Trail Chora Sfakion Sweet Water Beach Loutro Aradena Gorge, a stunning 7-kilometer trek that showcases the breathtaking beauty of southwestern Crete. Starting from the charming village of Aradena nestled in the majestic White Mountains, this moderate hike features an elevation gain and loss of 600 meters, making it both challenging and rewarding.
This hiking route is close to the coast line and relatively easy to walk if you are used to walk rocky pathways. It requires a little bit of balance at some places and rewards with stunning views. I walked the track from Chora Sfakia to Loutro and took the boat back to Chora Sfakia. The car was parked at the entrance from the road.

Great path to the beach. Sometimes a little bit difficult to find the correct path. After all there are rocks everywhere so it doesn’t matter if you are on the path or „offroad“. There is no handrail or any kind of border so there is some danger walking with you all the time.

I hiked from Sfakia to Sweet Waters to Loutro and from Loutro back to Sweet Waters to Ilingas beach to Sfakia. This was a 9.5 mile hike in total, and it takes around four hours of walking to complete. The hike between Loutro and Sweet Waters is well defined and easier compared to the trail between Sweet Waters and Sfakia. The first 1.5 mile from Sfakia to Sweet Waters is on asphalt - the beach of Ilingas is on this section. Ilingas is a pretty beach with caves, umbrellas, a cantine and a restaurant; I enjoyed my swim there. The beach of Sweet Waters is longer and more remote. Most people get there by regular boat trips from Sfakia and from Loutro - one end of the beach is nudist while on the other end where the boats arrive, there is a restaurant, toilets, and umbrellas on the beach. An amazing beach to stop for a swim.

Free parking for Sweet Water Beach and Loutro. Room for about 10 cars. We left ours for 3 nights, pretty far up the road, and no problem

A picturesque medium difficulty hike. Be sure to wear proper shoes (any sneakers would suffice) and not flip flops. It is definitely a trail with a lot of human effort put into making it stable and easier. They have improvised handrail in the most difficult parts for your safety. It takes around 25-30 minutes and along the way you will see beautiful sea water and nice landscapes. Parking is easy on the road - there were just about 5-10 cars in the beginning of September

Ao the hike is easy, we did it with sandals but chose the time in the day wisely, we where dripping, gettin to the beach is worth the sauna anyways
Martin B — Google review
Very nice walkway next to beautiful sea. You can walk to Loutro but return by boat if you wish

This was a wonderful hike! The view from the path is stunning! Although its not for the weak-hearted. The path is narrow and it has some safety features installed. The beach is about 25 minutes hiking that path. And its definitely worth taking the time. And maybe the sweat

Scenic spot
Richtis Waterfall is a stunning natural attraction located in Crete, offering a picturesque 3-kilometer trail with a 350-meter elevation difference. The journey begins at the charming stone arched bridge of Lachanas and leads through a lush riverside landscape adorned with plane trees, oleanders, and sage. Visitors can enjoy the refreshing oasis-like ambiance during hot summer days. The waterfall itself is described as beautiful, though water flow may vary depending on the season.
The most exotic place in crete I write this and went there beginning of September, while the weather is hot and Crete super dry, this waterfall still runs Just think you need a 30 min hike (not difficult), 30min back as well If you need some rest from the beaches and sun, come here

Beautiful and impressive even during summer when there is little water!

Traveling from London to Crete, I had been told about the waterfall, and the walk there. I wasn't keen on the long walk, but was told it was well worth it. After some research, we found that if you park at the beach, it is a 20ish (we did it in slightly less time) minute walk to the falls and then the same back. Not too busy, but we were there on a weekday. Water was cold, but lovely :)

Great walk to a gorgeous spot. Don't forget your swimming stuff to enjoy free spa under the waterfall. We did the bottom section from the beach parking. About 40 minutes walk slowly and not too difficult. You need to pay 3€. Ignore Google to find the parking follow the signs for Richtis beach, and trust your instinct and follow Geo17 signs. Very narrow road so go with small car and use low gears. The upper part is about 2 hrs walk from the parking down to the waterfall apparently. You need decent shoes.

Beautiful gorge. Beautiful waterfall (though water debit was rather small in October 2016). Really cold water but a quick bathing is fun :)). The "lazy way" (check Wikipedia for all options to reach the waterfall) of seeing the waterfall is to drive don the beach and walk up towards the waterfall. The road from Exo Mouliana village is paved with steep and narrow. The walk from the beach parking towards the waterfall is rather short (1.5km) and easy (only 2-3 boulders to pass over, but this is manageable) and one metal ladder(8-10steps) to pass over a bigger ridge. The path goes through some portions that look like a subtropical jungle! Beautiful walk! Do not take the dirt road outside the village!!! Take only the paved road that starts from the village, a blue sign shows the way. Conclusion: the walk from the beach was beautiful and rather easy (about 20-30minutes of slow walking), accessible to children and all ages.

Beautiful, small waterfall - swimming allowed but avoid sunscreen. About 30m walk up from the lower entrance to the gorge (after driving down from the village), alternatively walk the entire way down (and up again). At the beach there seems to be various ads placed for taxis that will drive down and fetch you, as well.

Perfect for kids from 5/6y. From the parking on the street after Exo Mouliana, it take around 20 min to reach the main entry. I choose to park the car up on the parking because of the review, but in fact the smal road down is ok if you don't cross to much cars. At the main entry, a guard will wait you to give some recommendations. 6€ per adult, children are free. Approx. 1:15 min from there down to the waterfall. It was quite dry when we did it, so just a few muddy steps at the beginning then a nice track down. We went down to the waterfall and took a swim in the refreshing water, checked the crab hidden under the waterfall... Then went up the same way. End of October, not crowdy at all. We were based near Agios Nikolaos, 1h drive. I recommend

Beautiful waterfall. 30 min hike from Richti Beach park. Road to beach park is quite steep and narrow so be prepared for careful driving. Clear and chill water. Definitely worth a visit!
