Porto Flavia, a port built in 1925 into a cliff above the sea near Nebida in southwest Sardinia, is an impressive feat of mining engineering. It served as a loading dock for zinc and featured two tunnels connecting it to the nearby mine for efficient mineral transportation. Today, visitors can tour the site by appointment with a guide due to safety reasons. The port's dramatic location and stunning views make it a must-see attraction on the Iglesiente coast.
Interesting place with interesting history why it was build the way it was. Great tour guide with fluent english explaining everything about the history of the place.
Henk S — Google review
The tour is actually about 40 minutes, 20 of which are waiting for another group to pass. Not much to see, but i love the idea of being inside one of the most interesting engineering sites. Also the lower level is inaccessible unfortunately.
Galina L — Google review
Unusual: not a mine per se but the tunnel used to transport lead, zinc and silver from the mines to the ship (lady guide with the Bansky tattoo could be less sarcastic with her replies, otherwise it was a positive experience )
Toine M — Google review
Porto Flavia is a unique and impressive site where history meets nature. The old mining port carved into the cliff offers stunning sea views and a fascinating story of engineering. A must-see for anyone visiting the area.
Nidhal Z — Google review
Interesting spot and part of Sardegna history. Also really beautiful views. The guide was very nice. I just would love to learn a bit more as information provided was very simple and I learnt more from AI after the trip
Magdalena W — Google review
What an amazing place the history and the work that went into carving a bulk shipping and handling facility into the centre of mountain of rock. Well worth the effort to get here and check it out❤️
Paul W — Google review
A bit expensive for what you are getting to visit. The site itself is unique but the tour was underwhelming. The guide seemed like they were reading off a script instead of being actually knowledgeable. It's worth the experience if you enjoy doing your own research.
Felix C — Google review
You can park near to Porto Flavia. But notice it’s a dirt road. The guided tour was very interesting. You walk through the tunnel and see how it was build. At the end you are standing in front of the sea and enjoy a beautiful view.

Salvaterra Castle, also known as the castle of San Guantino, is a medieval fortress located on Salvaterra hill in Iglesias. It was likely built by Count Ugolino Della Gherardesca after 1258 and served a strategic role in overseeing the city and communicating with other castles in the Republic of Pisa's territories.
We really enjoyed the tour. The building wasn’t too impressive, the texts were all in Italian and we practically did not understand a word the guide was saying, but his infectious impeccable energy had us hooked. Also, we learned a new Italian word; Questo. Brilliant!

We went online to check the opening hours and drove 45 minutes from where we were to find it was closed. That aside, the views from the top of the hill overlooking Iglesias were stunning. Alas we could not enter the castle grounds itself as it was all closed up. What a disappointment

Historic Walking Areas
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Centro storico, the heart of Iglesias, is a quiet neighborhood with a rich history that transports visitors to ancient times. Walking through its narrow alleys feels like stepping into an Iberian village, evoking childhood memories for some. The area is adorned with colorful houses, decorative altars on facades, and charming wrought iron balconies, creating a picturesque atmosphere reminiscent of towns in Extremadura.
(Translated by Google) The soul of Iglesias opens up in the silent neighborhood of Sa Costera. And in silence you walk through the alleys that exude ancient Iberian air. Some Spaniards say that images of towns in Extremadura pass before their eyes, reminiscent of when they were children. Thus you come across colorful houses, votive altars on the facades, wrought iron balconies. And together with the love request of a well-kept historic center there is the castle garden which leads to the unfortunately non-functioning lift. Hospitality also means embracing everyone, because Iglesias is a place of brotherhood. The neighborhood can be visited on foot, without haste, starting from the central square or from Piazza Municipio towards Sa Costera and the medieval walls of the castle.

(Translated by Google) It was built at the end of the 19th century next to, if not against, the decidedly older church of Valverde (13th century), which until the mid-1900s was more than half a kilometer away from the city. The ancient part of the cemetery is monumental, and preserves some tombs with statues by Sartorio (the same author of the war memorial in Piazza Oberdan). In recent times, the same "historical" part has been crowded with excessively modern tombs, somewhat ruining the atmosphere of the place. The remaining contemporary part is like all other cemeteries. (Translated by Google) The church of S. Saturno, later dedicated to S. Chiara and then to the Madonna delle Grazie, is in the historic center of Iglesias, a short distance from the cathedral. There is a lack of documentary information on the layout of the church, attributable to the end of the 13th century. Of the Gothic building with a single nave, rebuilt in the 18th century century, the facade remains (perfectly to the west, 8 m), mutilated of the terminal today in late Baroque forms. The facing is made of medium-sized limestone ashlars, cut with accuracy. From above, shoe-shaped plinth the robust corner pilasters and the two flat pilasters with a semi-hexagonal section rise up, enclosing the architraved and lunette portal, connected by horizontal arching; the lower part of the façade is thus divided into three mirrors. The portal has a semicircular relief arch with eyebrows. The architrave with classical phytomorphic branch decoration rests on capitals decorated like those of the pilasters. The bows have semicircular ring nuts cut flush and wide corbels mostly with flat leaves with a sharp top. In line with the portal there is an ogival window with a hanging eyebrow and light originally mullioned window.

(Translated by Google) Church owned by the Archconfraternity of the Virgin of Pietà del Santo Monte. The building, whose façade was never completed, was built between the end of the century XV and the beginning of the following century, it offers the usual characteristics of late Catalan Gothic: a hall divided into spans by pointed transverse arches and a presbytery covered by a cross vault. On the back wall a curved niche houses the simulacrum of the titular saint. The stoup located to the left of the entrance can be traced back to the original structure. The pile is supported by a truncated pyramidal base which supports the stem decorated with a skein decoration and pods, and which tapers to a narrow collar from which it begins to widen up to the connection of the basin. On the outside the latter has a decoration that recalls the ovule and palmette compositions of ancient tradition. Inside the basin there are four large fish carved in high relief, scattered haphazardly. Subsequently, in the 17th century, a side chapel with a "barrel" vault was added to the original building. In it are kept the simulacra which are carried in procession during the religious rites of Holy Week. Riconducibile all'impianto originario è l'acquasantiera posta a sinistra dell'ingresso.

The Mineral Art and Mineralogy Museum, housed in the Istituto Minerario Asproni, is a must-visit to understand the city's mining history. The museum showcases minerals, fossils, and industrial archaeological finds in three large halls. Visitors can also explore the abandoned Monteponi Mine for a deeper insight into Sardinia's mining heritage. Additionally, the Salvaterra Castle offers a permanent exhibition on Medieval History and Torture for those interested in historical artifacts.
The museum is located in the very center, where free parking is quite difficult to find. That's why we chose the parking lot of the retail chain and with some luck found the entrance to the museum. The museum consists of three large halls, in which showcases with specimens of minerals, fossils and industrial archaeological finds are exhibited. The museum collection includes almost 3,800 mineralogical, petrographic and fossil finds from all over the world, enriched by a collection of around a hundred archaeological finds originating from mining activities, from the Nuragic, Phoenician-Punic, Roman, Pisan and Aragonese medieval periods. A collection of finds that represents the identity of the Iglesiente area and brings together didactic, mineralogical and paleontological collections composed of local minerals and fossils and specimens from deposits spread over a regional, national and global territory. OK, it's "information from the web", so I'm not adding my own knowledge. Thanks for the info. Worth a visit. VERY, VERY, friendly staff!!!! Thank you for your engagement and effort. In any case, everything was OK. We recommend!!

Spiaggia di Masua is a small but stunning beach located near Fontanamare, known for its famous natural monument, the Pan di Zucchero Islet. The area was once a thriving mining center and still offers attractions related to its mining heritage, including guided tours of the mines at Masua and Monteponi. Visitors can also explore the mining museum in town and the Machinery Museum in Iglesias.
Very pleasant little sandy beach with a stunning view and warm water. There are some ciosc restaurants and beach service which offers also boat trips to see the rock Pan di Zucchero little closer and the Porto Flavia which is constructed in the rock and can be seen only from the sea

This place is out of this world. Looks like an underground cathedral, made of alabaster columns, and topped with ivory pinnacles. There are stalactites and stalagmites everywhere, along with other formations. And, to top it off, an amazingly clear and turquoise lake sparkles at the bottom of the cave. Unbelievable...

We really enjoyed our guided tour of the Grotta di Santa Barbara. The tour guide was very friendly and open to every question, which was then answered in a conclusive manner. The tour we took was at 3.30 pm and bilingual in Italian and English. It took us overall a bit more than 60 minutes with a group of approximately 24 people and included: Ride into the mine via mine train, elevator ride (which was a bit cozy), taking the stairs up to the cave, looking around in the cave with a lot of explanations, time to take individual photos in the cave and then the way back out of the mine. The cave itself is really beautiful and very astonishing to look at. Can recommend!

I had an incredible time at Cantina Aru, where Enrico guided me through a delightful 3-hour experience. I had the opportunity to sample 5 wines and enjoy local cheese, bread, and sausage. The highlight was getting to taste wine during various fermentation processes. This vineyard boasts a charming museum and exceptional staff. Enrico and the passionate sales manager were always available to answer questions, even with the language barrier. If given the chance, I would definitely visit again!
Although we came by unannounced we got to taste a lot of their wines. We felt very welcome and bought some beautiful bottles. There is also a tradition farm you can visit. Thank you Mario!

I emailed Cantina Aru a few weeks before our visit and got a quick reply from Enrico helping to set up a visit for us. When we visited they were doing work on a new tasting space which we got to see in progress and will make a beautiful space to taste when it's finished. The tasting includes 5 wines and Enrico told us about the local producers where he picked up some cheese and salami to go with the wines. Everything was delicious and Enrico was very warm and welcoming. We took home 2 bottles and would have taken more if we had the space to travel with them!

Miniera Monteponi is an enjoyable place to visit, offering a pool and a welcoming hat making community. With numerous dining, accommodation, shopping, walking, driving, and swimming options available nearby. The close proximity to the sea provides warm beach waters due to the presence of wave breakers that prevent strong tides. It is a fascinating mine with many original characteristics still intact.
It is very very fun. And I like it because it has a pool and the hat making community is very nice and there are a lot of places to eat and drink and sleep and shop and walk and drive and swim. (Translated by Google) This place literally takes your breath away. The ruins of the former Monteponi mine are a true journey through time - raw, authentic and moving. Walking among the empty buildings, I felt like I was looking into an abandoned world, where you can still hear the echo of the hard work of miners and the industrial hustle and bustle of decades ago. Ruined halls, metal structures, rusty equipment and crumbling buildings create an incredible, almost cinematic atmosphere. Nature is slowly starting to reclaim the area, which adds mystery and melancholy to the place. For lovers of urbex, industrial history or photography, this is a must-see on the map of Sardinia. It was an extraordinary journey - not only physical, but also emotional. Maniera Monteponi is a space that will stay in your memory for a long time. I recommend it to anyone looking for something more than just beaches and resorts. (Original) To miejsce dosłownie zapiera dech w piersiach. Ruiny dawnej kopalni Monteponi to prawdziwa podróż w czasie — surowa, autentyczna i poruszająca. Wędrując wśród pustostanów, miałem wrażenie, jakbym zaglądał do porzuconego świata, w którym wciąż słychać echo ciężkiej pracy górników i przemysłowego zgiełku sprzed dekad. The Cathedral of Saint Claire of Assisi is a unique and harmonious blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, built between 1284 and 1288. Visitors should ensure modest dress before entering this historic site.

Built in the 13th century at the behest of the rulers of the Pisan dynasty, it was dedicated to Saint Clare of Assisi, patron saint of the city. The building, initially in Gothic style, has undergone numerous interventions over the centuries, especially in the Baroque era, which have modified its original appearance. On the outside, the simple but elegant façade is striking, while the interior houses works of art, marble altars and precious liturgical furnishings. The chapel of the Blessed Sacrament is particularly evocative. The Cathedral is still the center of the city's religious life today, home to solemn celebrations and events linked to the mining and cultural tradition of Iglesias. A place that combines spirituality, art and history, telling the profound identity of the city. Visiting those that in the past were places of work is impressive for all users, from the industrial archeology expert to the unaware visitor, who like me did not physically know or underestimated the preciousness of this area. The site is set in a beautiful landscape and the particularity of this industry and its techniques attract the attention of many visitors. Many areas have been subject to recovery and restoration thanks to the great work of volunteers, who managed to bring the original spaces, machinery and historical documents of essential value back to life. In fact, the contribution of the Rinasce Pozzo Sella association and its tourist guides is fundamental, who with commitment, dedication and passion provide an indispensable service for those who want to visit the site pleasantly and fully understand every aspect, retracing its history and current affairs. I recommend all users to visit this area! The Villaggio Minerario Asproni is an exceptional and captivating place where one can immerse themselves in the rich history of the people who once owned, operated, and toiled in the mines many years ago. This open-air museum offers a superior experience compared to conventional museums as it allows visitors to truly sense and understand the past. It is highly recommended to book a tour with Annalisa, who will guide you through this fascinating journey into the region's mining history.

Nestled on the outskirts of Iglesias, the ancient church of Our Lady of Valverde stands as a testament to history, dating back to the late 13th century. This Gothic structure, while simple in its decor and furnishings, exudes a serene charm that draws visitors in. Adjacent to it lies a Franciscan convent from the 1600s, remnants of which can still be seen today alongside a well that once served its cloister.
(Translated by Google) The Church of Our Lady of Valverde, located on the southern outskirts of Iglesias, is a fine example of medieval religious architecture that combines Romanesque and Catalan Gothic elements. Built at the end of the 13th century, probably during the domination of the counts of Gherardesca, it originally stood outside the city walls, near one of the main access roads to the city. The facade, made of pink trachyte ashlars, is divided into three orders by horizontal molded frames. The first order has a portal with a round arch, surmounted by a molded eyebrow and decorated with corbels representing a lily and a bear. The second order houses a Gothic mullioned window with polychrome stained glass windows, while the third is decorated with trefoil arches that follow the shape of the gable roof. The interior, with a single nave, underwent significant transformations in 1592: the original trussed roof was replaced by pointed diaphragm arches that support the wooden roof, and the quadrangular presbytery was covered with a star cross vault with pendulous gems. The central gem depicts the Madonna and Child, while the four smaller gems bear engravings with the name of the author of the work, Melchiorre Serra, the date of execution (1592), the name of the curator of the factory, Antioco Spada, and the monogram of Christ JHS. The Church of Our Lady of Valverde represents an important historical and artistic heritage of Iglesias, testifying to the cultural and spiritual richness of the city.

(Translated by Google) The church of S. Maria di Valverde, in the Middle Ages extra muros along one of the access roads to Villa di Chiesa for the Castle gate, still remains isolated today on the immediate outskirts of the city of Iglesias along the old road to Cagliari. There is a lack of documentary information on the Gothic building, which can be dated to the end of the 13th century century. Of the layout structures of the single-nave hall, rebuilt in 1592, only parts of the sides and the facade, facing south-west. The former are built in clay bricks, with terminal arches in trachyte; The semicircular arches have a ring carved with phytomorphic motifs. The facade is installed with cantons medium-sized trachytics. From bottom to top, the corner pilasters are connected via the plinth with molded shoe, two thin frames dividing into three orders and the arching parallel to the slopes of the pediment. The portal has jambs and architrave woven into the wall facing, with flush capitals. The external profile of the relief arch is riveted (also along the diameter) by a bullnose frame. In the middle order one opens large ogival window with compensatory mullioned window. The eyebrow extends seamlessly into the frame at the base of the pediment. Here the thin molded piers extend, concluded by trefoiled arches with multiple bezel. (Sardegna Cultura)

Teatro Electra is a beautiful Liberty style theater located in the center of Iglesiente, making it of great historical value. Although the structure may not be entirely comfortable in terms of seating and usability, it has been restored and returned to the community for various cultural events. The theater offers good acoustics and acceptable visibility, although some have noted the lack of air conditioning as a downside.

A riot of useless wrought iron, even difficult to reach your seat given the small space. Only the memories and the beauty of the square on which the building overlooks remain of the cinema theatre. To be torn down and redone....even reaching the bathrooms is a challenge. I said it all! For me, Electra has remained a place of my heart. But in Iglesias there was another splendid theater: the Olimpia. That too is a memory now. Too bad, too bad, too bad! (Original) Peccato peccato peccato!
