The Margit Kovács Ceramic Museum in Szentendre, Hungary is a must-visit attraction for art enthusiasts. It features over 300 figural sculptures created by the celebrated 20th-century Hungarian ceramic artist Margit Kovács. The museum, opened in 1973, proudly displays the versatile and timeless creations of Kovács, a Kossuth Award-winning artist.
So glad I got to see this exhibition. The opening hours are the best by far as well so it’s hard not to miss. Many rooms of incredible ceramic art - she was a true artist!
Louise C — Google review
The lady on the entry apologised for us having to pay full price (non EU) but our tickets covered a number of museums and galleries. We had never heard of Margit Kovács but absolutely loved her work. We spent a long time wandering slowly around this small museum. I would say this place alone is enough reason to come to Szentendre, even just for the day from Budapest. Very nearby is the excellent Café Christine, looking over the Danube.
Eric B — Google review
I like the way Szentendre has so many small museums each one dedicated to just one artist/craftsman. Here you can see a great collection of Margit Kovacs ceramic works. The entry price of 1700 HUF will also give you access to other museums around the town, so make sure you keep the receipt. There's a particular one way circuit around this exhibition. I nearly missed some of it as I couldn't understand Hungarian and the staff couldn't understand English. But with a bit of gesturing, I found the right way around.
Miles M — Google review
What a lovely magical place! I am glad to have discovered the beautiful and strong works of this great ceramic artist. I loved the Madonnas, the mourners, the women, the animals... all in fact 🙂. There is even a space to touch some pieces. Nice ladies in the exhibition explain and show you.
Isabelle R — Google review
Go and see the fantastic Margit Kovács Ceramics Museum. It is strange to discover an amazing potter from before and during the Communist era here in Hungary. One of her works is a round ceramic 3x3 meter world map with the USSR in the middle. We lived side by side in Europe but each with our own center of the world. Margit Kovác's ceramics are some of the most expressive I have ever seen.
Karsten L — Google review
A must to see place while visiting Szentendre. Just down from the main square. One of the most famous Hungarian artist Margit Kovacs lived and worked there. Great cut through her work. Outstanding pieces of art. Little shop, Cafe and WCs available too.

The Marzipan Museum, located in the charming town of Szentendre along the Danube River in Hungary, is a popular attraction for both locals and tourists. The museum showcases intricate marzipan figurines on its first floor, including sculptures depicting scenes from Disney films and famous buildings. Founded by Matyas Szamos, the museum offers insight into the world of confectionery and is a worthwhile visit while exploring Szentendre.
I was amazed by what can be done with marzipan. The artistry is incredible. I liked that it says who created each piece and how many hours were spent on it. The price is 9,000 forints, and 30,000 with a guided tour – a fair price. It's a shame there isn't a workshop for children.
Ziv T — Google review
Amazing little shop with a wide variety of Marzipan. This was the first time I had a marzipan and it was amazing. They have wide variety of pure marzipan with flavors and a lot with chocolates, but my favorites was the pure almond marzipan. Definitely a unique stop for me. Just wish I could order more online. Definitely a must go place if you stop in this cute little town.
Anand — Google review
I had a wonderful experience at Szamos Confectionery! The atmosphere is warm and elegant, with that classic charm that makes you want to stay for hours. I ordered a slice of chocolate cake, and it was absolutely perfect - rich, smooth, and beautifully balanced in flavor. You can really taste the quality ingredients and the craftsmanship Szamos is famous for. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the presentation was lovely. It’s the ideal place to relax with a coffee and something sweet. Highly recommended for anyone who loves authentic Hungarian desserts and great service!
Daniel K — Google review
Very nice marzipan museum. Ground floor is shop, first floor is museum - about 6 smaller rooms full of sweet sculptures. We like it.
Radek D — Google review
It’s definitively worth a visit but it should be called a gallery rather than a museum. There are some impressive pieces of art but I would have liked to know more about how the marzipan is made and how the sculptures are made.
Christer L — Google review
Beautiful restaurant ambience and collection of cakes was mind blowing. Staff was very friendly and speaks English. Other items too looked delicious over the counter, need more visits to try all of them. Hot chocolate was yum! Due to time and other plans couldn’t visit the museum. But had one of the best cakes ever. This is must visit shop and try some cakes , hot chocolate and infused teas when you visit Szentendre. To get access to toilets speak to the member of staff as you would need coupons.

Very friendly staff... Nice, cosy and delicious cakes and drinks. Ice coffee and house lemonade 😋

The Ferenczy Museum, located in Szentendre, Hungary, is a prominent institution that celebrates the artistic legacy of the region. It is housed in an elegant mansion and features the works of the renowned Ferenczy family of artists, including Károly Ferenczy. The museum offers a comprehensive collection spanning several generations of the family's artwork and also hosts temporary exhibitions.
5stars valid, while the opinion 'here' missed the place :-( and therefore it was irrelevant. better look for the permanent exhibition...
Gábor V — Google review
A small museum dedicated to a single artist/craftsman. The 1700 HUF entry ticket bought at other museums will give you free access here also. The artist featured here is Tamas Melkovics, his works being modern experimental sculptural forms. For me I preffered the two other museums I visited today, viz. Kmetty Janos (Paintings) and Margit Kovacs ceramics, but this was on the way back to the station so worth dropping in for 10/15 minutes. They provide free lockers for any bags you have which is useful.
Miles M — Google review
The Ferenczy Museum, situated in Szentendre, Hungary, stands as a significant institution dedicated to preserving and showcasing the artistic heritage of the region. Named after the Ferenczy family, known for their pivotal contributions to Hungarian art, the museum plays a central role in commemorating their legacy. The museum complex comprises a variety of exhibitions and collections, displaying artworks by the Ferenczy family members—Károly, Noémi, and Béni—alongside numerous other influential Hungarian artists. These collections include paintings, sculptures, and other visual arts that highlight the evolution of Hungarian art from the late 19th century to the present day. This cultural institution serves as a focal point for understanding the development and impact of the Ferenczy family and other prominent artists associated with Szentendre. Moreover, it offers a space for scholarly research, educational programs, and engaging exhibitions, allowing visitors to delve into the rich artistic heritage of the region. Through its efforts to curate and preserve an extensive collection of Hungarian art, the Ferenczy Museum stands as an essential venue for both local and international visitors interested in exploring the artistic history of Hungary and the broader evolution of European visual arts.

Step into the past at the Retro Design Center in Szentendre, where a fascinating collection of items from the 1970s awaits. From beautifully restored cars to kitchenware, electrical appliances, furniture, and toys, there's something to captivate everyone's interest. The center offers a nostalgic journey through Hungary's socialist era with rare cars as its main attraction. Visitors are treated to a diverse array of retro items that were once part of everyday life in Eastern Europe.
Excellent idea! It brings you right back to the past with memories and emotion. I'm really amazed how the industries in Hungary and eastern Europe countries influence to so many other parts in the world. You can see again so many items that attached to your life in not so long a go, from a little toy, soap bar to a television, fridge and car. It's totally delightful to visit this center. It's fun, it's interesting, and it's memorable.
Cam O — Google review
The museum feels like a time capsule – bringing together the most iconic symbols of the past. From classic cars and motorcycles with sidecars to posters, everyday items, and life-like street scenes, everything is arranged with great attention to detail. Walking through the exhibition, you’re transported to a time when life seemed simpler, yet more authentic. I especially loved how each section of the museum tells its own story – not just through the vehicles, but also through the nostalgic decor and everyday objects. It's the perfect place for anyone who appreciates retro vibes, history, and great photo opportunities. If you love vintage charm, this place will definitely steal your heart!

I’ve cycled past this so many times and not visited, finally did - what a great museum! It’s full of retro items from Hungary and the former east, really well set up. You walk through the house with each room filled with items, then there are lots of vehicles outside - many that you can sit in. Well worth visiting if you are in the area.

The heart of Szentendre and one of the most picturesque squares in Hungary 🏘️🎨. surrounded by colorful Baroque buildings, charming art shops 🖼️, and cozy cafés ☕. The cobblestone streets and the central Holy Trinity Column give it a fairy-tale feel ✨. Great place to sit, people-watch, or start exploring the town’s art galleries and museums 🎭. Often lively with music, festivals, or market stalls—especially in summer 🌞🎶. A must-visit for that classic Szentendre charm 💛.

Coming to the artist village of Szentendre near Budapest was one of the highlights of our trip. On a very hot day, we had a demonstration of making goulash and then enjoyed goulash lunch. The artwork, food places and even a Christmas shop. I brought Hungarian wooden puzzle box, the artist carved a name on it in front of me. Highly recommended.

I recommend to buy ticket in advance to avoid long queue. I visited this place for the Easter and it was such a good experience. There were many events and I think otherwise it is very nice place to spend time with your family for a picnic. Be careful that there is only one restaurant and a bakery so waiting time could be longer. I would recommend to get a food and water along with you.

Unbelievably cool place, great historical vibes, super interesting! Strongly recommend to all who are into the rural European history, looking for a source of inspiration or just want to enjoy kinda time-traveling walk. A lot of entertainment for the children, fantastic tasty pastry, comfortable walking routes, many fruit trees — yes, you can even eat some berries, depends on the season of course. I'm absolutely happy about that visit!

Very nice place close to Budapest (half an hour drive) yet very tranquil and representing an old village of Hungary, where one can learn more about the old ways of living and cultural aspects of the Hungarians. If you don't have the whole day to spend at the site, it's recommended to take a bike from the reception area after getting in, as walking route is quite long.

Went to Szentendre with the intent of visiting this heritage museum. It is a terrific place with many buildings which were in danger of being demolished or simply disappearing. They were carefully taken apart and reassembled here. They were careful to retain the rustic nature of the buildings. Sometimes not everything is accessible due to the popularity of the space as a venue for filming movies and TV shows. Plenty of places to sit and have a picnic. Also several eating and drinking venues. Only snag I found was that on a Saturday afternoon there was no public transport back to Szentendre and I had to walk about 3 kilometres. Great place for a day out.

Built in the 18th century by Serbs, Greeks, and Dalmatians fleeing from the Turks, it showcases a unique blend of Baroque and Byzantine styles. The church is adorned with glittering icons and is adjacent to the Church Art Museum.
It's really nice and impressive. There is a small fee to get in and I suppose you can only pay cash, but I didn't visit it's interior.

A Serbian church in town. Entrance fee of HUF500 (as at Sept’24) is required in cash only, which is a lil bit inconvenient for visitors. The garden there is calm and a lot of information boards about history are presented around for those curious minds even if you’re not able to go inside the church.

Can't actually get into the main grounds of the Church and you pay 400 HUF just to step inside to see the Altar when some other churches you can visit for free in the town.

The Urban Transport Museum offers a fascinating journey through the history of public transportation in Hungarian cities. With over 60 renovated vehicles on display, visitors can explore the evolution of urban transport infrastructure. The museum features five open-air exhibition areas where guests can board and examine various modes of transportation. While descriptions are only available in Hungarian, it's a perfect destination for a short trip, especially for families with children who can enjoy interacting with the exhibits.
A surprisingly large museum on the history of public transport in Budapest. The museum is divided into 3 areas: In the first area, you can get important information about the development of public transport in Budapest from information panels and many photos, in both English and Hungarian. In the second area, you will find many original vehicles. The vehicles are in great condition, and you can even board some of them. In the outdoor area, there are more vehicles, some of which are not in the best condition due to weather conditions. The museum is within walking distance of the Szentendre train station (about a 5-minute walk). Please note: The museum only accepts cash (Forint)!

Very interesting place. It explains the history of public transportation in Hungary, mainly in the Budapest area. There are old vehicles in display. If you are interested in history, vehicles and engineering, it is definitely a place to visit.
Jason P — Google review
Very large museum with a variety of trains. Display boards had all information translated to English too for any tourists. Very empty at the time of visiting with only 2 or 3 other groups of people present. Along with the trains was a large amount of history of transport in Hungary and a collection of buses. It is sad to see many of the trains rusting with failing paint but if the money is not there, the museum is not to blame.
Jasper M — Google review
An old wish of the experts of Budapest Transport Limited came true when, at the time of the modernisation of the Szentendre suburban railway line in 1991 - 92, a permanent exhibition could be opened in one of the reconstructed covered depots displaying the transport history of the capital and its neighbourhood. The depot was built in 1914, during the electrification of the suburban railway line, but by the beginning of the 1990"s it became unsuitable for the storage and maintenance of trains with big passenger carrying capacity. The museum consisting of five exhibition rooms and two display halls opened on July 14, 1992. The theme of the first room is the history of public transport in Budapest, presenting the legal predecessors of the company as well as the lines and vehicles operated by them. In the second room the visitors can get information about the public transport of other cities (such as Debrecen, Miskolc, Szeged and Szombathely). In the third room the technological relics of public transport infrastructure, track and catenary construction, maintenance and power supply are demonstrated. The fourth room exhibits the tools of the original forge that was linked with the old covered depot in Szentendre. The fifth room focuses on the history of bus and tram transport in Budapest. The visitors can find documents and photos, various tickets and vehicle spare parts here. In the hall and the yard of the museum tram and suburban railway cars, buses and trolley buses are standing. It can be an exciting experience for the children that they can get on the exhibited vehicles.
Roja S — Google review
For a short trip on Saturday it is perfect for children and for 1~ 1.5 hours to spend. Many vehicles are open and you can go to see the interior. Not all possibilities are exhausted, it ( the collection) could be greater. Surprise: the photo ticket is more expensive than the tickets for adults. Unfortunately descriptions only in Hungarian.

(Translated by Google) The story of the synagogue in Szentendre is linked to the deportation of Jews from the town and its surroundings in 1944. A total of 250 Jews arrived at the death camps, only 35 of whom survived the Holocaust. Among them were Lajos Szanto and his wife, who returned to live here. Their son, Gyorgy Szanto, decided to build a synagogue in the courtyard of their house in memory of relatives who lived here and perished in the Holocaust. He died suddenly, before he could finish the project, but his son Andras Szanto finished the work. Today, no Jews live here and a local woman owns the place. (Translated by Google) I warn everyone against buying anything in this gallery, because it is full of fake paintings, as I was able to see for myself in a company of experts. The owner of the gallery does not have any art history education, which of course he does not brag about, maybe some high school. However, this does not entitle him, outside of his practice, to issue certificates of paintings, which we assume are often fake. A conman and a fraud at his best! Beware of the dwarf! The gallery's motto is typical, I quote: While the ant worked diligently, the cricket kept making music. They both died in the fall. This is quite an eloquent example of what an immeasurably limited, incredibly primitive person László Erdész is. It is clear that his narcissism is what satisfies him in this activity, running the gallery. This in itself would not be a problem if he understood it, but he continues to do a lot of very dangerous and of course illegal things, and has been doing so for decades. It would be time to look at your nails and close your gallery after a proper investigation by the authorities. Óvakodj a törpétől!

The Japanese Garden is a tranquil oasis located on Margaret Island, surrounded by the Danube. Established in the 1970s, it features lush greenery, meandering walkways, and a picturesque koi pond adorned with lotus blossoms. Visitors can experience a blend of Japanese and Hungarian cultures while strolling through this serene space. The garden also boasts a Musical Fountain that plays a medieval Hungarian tune composed specifically for it.
The Japanese Garden on Margaret Island is such a peaceful little spot. It’s not huge, but that’s part of the charm—it feels cozy and calm. The pond with the koi and lotus is super pretty, and the whole area is perfect for just wandering around or sitting and soaking up the peaceful vibe. Great place for a quiet break if you’re already exploring the island. Loved how chill it was.
Laurence H — Google review
Very nice garden not far from the city, well maintained, water fountain with music is quite entertaining, popular English songs are played, rose garden is beautiful, few good and drinks vendors, no admission fees, need few hours to cover the whole garden.

Michal S — Google review
Nice scenic Japanese garden, ideal for relaxing after a busy day. Was quiet when visited as was in November. I would highly recommend a visit if In the area
Rob Y — Google review
Tucked away on Margaret Island, it’s like walking into a dream that whispers softly in cherry blossom tones. As a romantic, I found it less a destination and more a tender pause — a breath between city and sky. The koi pond reflects more than trees; it mirrors feelings we often keep folded inside. The little red bridge is the kind of place you’d want to kiss someone slow, like you have all the time in the world. You won’t find grand declarations here — just subtle grace: the way bamboo leans, the way water flows over stone. It’s a place where love doesn’t need words, where silence speaks fluently. Bring someone you want to hold hands with and not say much. Or come alone, with a book of poems and a heart that still listens. It’s not just beautiful — it’s beautifully quiet. And in that quiet, something timeless happens.
Galina C — Google review
Beautiful and peaceful, totally magnificent in autumnal colours, aust visit if you are on the island

(Translated by Google) The exhibition of folk artist Rózsa Guba is a captivating journey through time and style through several countries and eras. From Marie Antoinette to Hungarian folk costumes, Einstein to the fairy-tale Pumukli, the artist's very careful, thorough, time-consuming and labor-intensive work is visible in numerous wonderfully designed and dressed dolls. She has been making the dolls and the clothes herself for more than 40 years. Her dolls have been exhibited several times around the world, including in Japan, and have been given as gifts by famous people such as Fidel Castro or Helmut Kohl. It is worth taking the time to see the exhibition.
