Castello della Magione is a medieval castle located near Poggibonsi. Initially built as a hospital for pilgrims on the Via Francigena, it was once owned by the Knights Templar before being passed to the Hospitallers of San Giovanni di Gerusalemme. Despite suffering destruction over the centuries, it remains well-kept and clean, with brochures and maps available for visitors.
(Translated by Google) A place full of sacredness, and full of authority. The image of the Templars is of the living order. From the past and stands out with the new associative activities in the future, immersed between the library and the memories, to the images of those who lived their lives entirely dedicated to the order, I recommend the visit on Sunday morning after Mass, and I recommend give a small smile to Sky who welcomes you with his tail wagging even though he has lost his beloved owner, by the way Sky is looking for a new owner, so far no response yet... snimslk allowed with discretion, it is still a historic place. super recommended (Original) Un luogo denso di sacralità, e piena di autorevolezza . It's called castle but is actually a church which was closed when I was there.

It's ok of a castle to look at. It has more of history side than a wow factor. There are better castles within 2km vicinity.

During my visit (outside only), there were a lot of mosquitoes, so be prepared. The Palazzo Comunale, Pinacoteca, and Torre Grossa are must-visit attractions in the city. The Palazzo del Popolo houses the Museo Civico, which features a remarkable collection of artworks dating from the 13th to 17th centuries, including medieval court frescos and masterpieces by renowned artists such as Lippo Memmi and Filippino Lippi.
Very interesting exhibition and the views from the tower are well-worth the climb. It is a bit of a challenge if you are scared of heights like me. The ticket is also valid for the Duomo right next door. Full recommendation.
Espial1348 — Google review
One of the "must try" when in Gimignano, climbing the Torre Grossa will offer the best views over this superb medieval city, but also over the Tuscan fields. It is indeed hard to climb the stairs, especially the few ones at the top, but it is worth it.
Ana-Maria A — Google review
Great place to visit when in San Gimignano. We went in when it opened at 10am so it wasn’t busy. They have redone the stairs so it’s quite an easy walk up - if you are tall you will need to duck your head at the end. The views are breathtaking! You then get to descend and walk into a great little museum. Would greatly recommend when visiting San Gimignano.
Ruth R — Google review
This city is like a hidden jam of Tuscany. We just looked at the map and randomly decided to come, and you become a cross this amazing museum and the city itself was very beautiful and old however, it wasn’t busy at all not very risky which is nice I would highly recommend to come and check it out if you haven’t.
Haleh M — Google review
A great place with a great view of the city. I definitely want to mention the very kind and helpful man at the ticket office. I have poor eyesight and my English isn't very good, but he patiently explained everything! Thank you, this is exactly what helps you develop a wonderful attitude towards the country! The people in Tuscany are incredible!
Екатерина Р — Google review
Great place with beautiful view, you can buy tickets in full city pass. That grant's you access to tower, tower museum and museum next to tower, it all costs only 15 euro
_igor_028_ — Google review
Lovely place. A must see when in San Gimignano! I suggest you get the San Gimignano pass, since it does save you money if you visit more than two attractions

Nestled in the heart of Tuscany, the Fortezza di Poggio Imperiale is a captivating destination that offers visitors a delightful blend of history and natural beauty. This stunning site is perfect for leisurely strolls, invigorating exercise sessions, or simply enjoying a picnic while soaking in breathtaking views of Chianti, San Gimignano, and the picturesque Val d'Elsa. It is an interesting place with decent views. The best adventures are the unexpected ones. Watch out for figure on the wall.
C ( — Google review
Main part of site is sparse public park. The citadel is open for free. Hours might be 10-19 in Sep, but it closed at 17 in early October. Lots of information boards around in Italian and English. Not wildly exciting

One of the nicest place in Poggibonsi to visit :) The best view is during the sunset!
Karolina L — Google review
A beautiful place to go for a walk, do exercise, have a picnic, and take in views of Chianti, San Gimignano and of course, the Val d'Elsa. You can ramble around the archaeological site as well as the recreation of an ancient village.
Dervla L — Google review
This place is really quite. I liked that there are often these original old things next to some restored ones. Plus of this place: You will get a really good panoramic view.
Maik W — Google review
Nice place but I expected more. The Retaurant seems to be a nice option to have dinner at sunset. Maybe nice place for open concerts but I do not know if this happens there.

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
La Rocca di Staggia is a historic stone castle with towers that dates back over 1,000 years. It offers guided tours and art exhibits, making it a great visit for families. The area is quiet and not crowded like many tourist places, with free parking available nearby. As a private castle, visitors must take a guided tour to explore its history and architecture. The knowledgeable guides provide engaging tours with details about the region's history and the construction of the castle in the Middle Ages.
They area is completely tourists-free. There's a free parking very close to the castle. As it is a private castle, you have to take a guided tour. A museum would seem appropriate. Cute little city with some interesting buildings and lots of parking. Very nice fortress town with full castle at one end. Very beautiful castle, both outside and inside to visit. Their home was a protected but precarious nest in the hollow trunk of a Tower. Like a summer tree. La Rocca di Staggia, also known as the Franzesi Castle, is a medieval castle in the walled town of Staggia, Tuscany, Italy. It's located in the commune of Poggibonsi, near the exit "Colle Valdelsa Sud" of the Florence-Siena speedway. The castle's history is intertwined with the Abbey of Abbadia ad Isola and is situated along the Via Francigena.

Fascinating medieval structure, but no effort seems to be in place to take advantage of its existence. A museum would seem appropriate. Cute little city with some interesting buildings and lots of parking. Apparently, you need to buy tour tickets to enter, but there was no sign of this when we were there.
Warren H — Google review
A great visit for all the family a really enjoyable visit. The area is quiet and not crowded like many tourist places. There's a free parking very close to the castle. It is a private castle and you have to take a guided tour, but the price is good value. We had an amazing guide who was very engaging and tried to make the visit fun and gave a lot of details on the history of the region, why and how the castle was built, details about living on the border of Sienna and Florence in the Middle-Ages. There is a permanent Art exhibition around the castle. A great place to go!
Phil M — Google review
Unfortunately it was closed when we got there, would have loved to visit it.
Rares M — Google review
Nice castle to visit. Beware that you need a guided tour to be able to enter. I did not enter, the outside was beautiful as well. And the drive to the castle is also recommendable.
Koen H — Google review
We really enjoyed our visit there. I was in charge of locating a small medieval castle to visit while traveling between two cities and picked this one pretty much randomly. They area is completely tourists-free. There's a free parking very close to the castle. As it is a private castle, you have to take a guided tour. We were very lucky to be there the day the only French-speaking guide was on call. We got an amazing visit with a lot of details on the history of the region, why and how the castle was built, and tons of little details about living on the very border of Sienna and Florence in the Middle-Ages. Instead of filling the rooms with old furniture, there is a permanent exposition of modern Art based on the story of the castle. For those interested in ancient architecture, the round tower is one of the only 4 surviving ones with such an ancient stone dome.

In the charming town of Certaldo, the Palazzo Pretorio stands as a symbol of political power. Situated on Via Boccaccio, it is accompanied by the church and the Logge del Mercato, once a bustling trading spot. The area that now appears as squares used to be simple vegetable gardens in the past. Visitors can explore this medieval gem and admire its frescoes and dungeon inside the main building.
The most preserved pre-medieval castle I have ever seen. Even the frescos are 75% original. Be sure to go up to the bell-tower from the little garden, for amazing views! Located on top of a hill in Alto Certaldo, like all of the old cities in Italy. Same garden has paths to the church and the toilets. If you look to the left side of the castle, you will see San Gimignano in the distance! Be sure to buy the combination ticket for the three different properties they offer you, is there all worth seeing, and make sure you don't miss the dungeons in the cloister and the Castle.
Angella R — Google review
Well worth visiting, so much to see here, for 5€ each you get access to this and 2 other museums. There's plenty of rooms too visit in, all with information, plus you can go up to the top of the clock tower and get great views of Certaldo Alto. Not busy at all when we visited on a weekday morning.
Jamie P — Google review
This is the highlight of the medieval town. You can enter the main building to see frescoes and the dungeon. Exit through the back to visit an old church. The best part is the climb to the top of the bell tower, which you access from the garden next to the church. At the top you get some fantastic views of the old town and surrounding countryside. You have to pay for at least 2 museums, although the cost is only €4 per person. The bonus was a visit to the house down the main street, with another tower, which has good views as well
Dan W — Google review
An interesting place with a long of history. Some really nice frescoes. Well done presentations, and a cheap ticket (€5) for 3 small but interesting museums. Worth a visit for sure.

Five stars, if only for the magnificent frescoed tabernacle by Benozzo Gozzoli in the adjoining church reached via the back courtyard. Throughout the palazzo there are various frescoes and terracotta works along with other artifacts of historical significance.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Fonte delle Fate is a 13th-century fountain located near Porta della Fonte in Poggio Bonizio. The fountain was buried during the construction of the fortress and rediscovered four centuries later. It features a large portico with six double pointed arches and is surrounded by a peaceful park, making it an ideal spot for a picnic. Visitors can also enjoy the permanent art exhibit and observe wildlife such as terrapins, lizards, and even praying mantises.
Spooky fun place art in a classical era fountain.

It's a little surprising to find this little interesting fountain in the middle of a small town. The park is huge and has a lot of green space, good for walking and dogs.
Emily L — Google review
Nice to see, a bit uncared for. But do go into the small square, there is a scanning device that triggers lovely music! In the pond on the side you can see turtles.
Guy D — Google review
It's an uphill walk and (too) steep for cycling. There is not much left of the fountain, and it's dry. Interestingly, it seems to be on the route of the Camimo de Santiago de C
Seimen B — Google review
Super cool. And old. Very old. And free.
Michael O — Google review
No need to buy tickets, the place is generally very beautiful, but spoilt by the litter people have left, when there are several trash bins to use. The pond with turtles had plastic straws and other plastic fragments floating in it, it needs to be cleaned. There were land workers maintaining the area, hopefully they get round to doing that. Shame people show disrespect in the first instance though.
Richard D — Google review
Worth visiting for the eerily evocative ruins with the weird (but entirely complementary) art work - and also the wildlife. There are terrapins (not turtles!) in the pond, lizards scurrying about, and I spotted a beautiful praying mantis on the handrail.

Poggibonsi Archaeodrome - Open Air Museum is a spectacular and well-maintained place that offers an excellent reproduction of a curtis from the early Middle Ages. Visitors can take a lovely walk, explore the museum, and observe interesting ruins. The site provides an immersive experience into the village's history and life during that time. Although it may be deserted at times, it remains an intriguing location for history enthusiasts to understand pre-technological era living.
An amazing open air museum showing a little what medieval life was like with a reconstructed village.

It took us two hours to find it, walking for miles! Need some decent signage but interesting insight into past when you get there. It will amaze you the extent of the settlement.

Love it! Really well done

Unfortunately, despite it stating online that it would be open, it was deserted. It was still interesting though and we were able to walk around the site and all read the information on the info boards.

A must visit location for history lovers to realize how the people was living before the era of technology.

Really nice wine! Both white and red. Take as much as you can because you will regret it later :)))

We found this place when returning from Siena to Poggibonsi. It is close to main road and has good wine and olive oil. We bought some boxes with bottles of wine and 5L olive oil. The Chianti classic wine is €9 a bottle and very good. You have to try it.

(Translated by Google) The shop is a bit spartan, more like it has a department store, the quality/price ratio of the wine is excellent. The staff is very courteous and helpful. I'll intervene in my previous reviews by commenting that: the wine is always excellent, the staff is always very kind but the shop is new and it's fabulous. I would go to live there if they wanted me. Well done excellent work. (Original) Lo spaccio è un po' spartano più che altro ha un grande magazzino il rapporto qualità prezzo del vino è ottimo. Il personale è molto cortese e disponibile. Bravissimi ottimo lavoro.

(Translated by Google) Update: I was also able to purchase remotely, by contacting the winery directly. Excellent service, very kind in providing me with the price lists and sending me the wine via dedicated courier. Excellent packaging that preserves and protects the shipment. In short, further confirmation of professionalism combined with quality products. ______________________________________________________ Purchased wine in convenient 10-litre bag-in-boxes. Bottled at home it has lost none of its aromas and body even after a year. Worthy of note is the Syrah, a truly excellent wine. The Toscana Bio is also good. Too bad they don't sell online.... I'll have to organize a new trip to Tuscany. Fattoria Di Montemorli is run by a wine-making family that has been in the business for seven generations. They are known for producing high-quality wines and organic fruits and vegetables. The winery's restaurant offers a warm and inviting atmosphere, where guests can enjoy delicious dishes that showcase the flavors of Chianti cuisine.
We didn't book a reservation, but we were in the area and decided to step by. The owner was very welcoming and kind. Unfortunately we didn't have the time to do a tour or a full wine tasting, but he still let us try some wines before we purchased a bottle. It was some of the best wines I have ever tasted, and I'm happy that we made the decision to step by. If I'm ever in the area again I'll definitely stop by again and stay longer. I recommend it to anyone who appreciates fine wine
Joran H — Google review
Me and my husband came here for a wine tasting and we were not disappointed. We got a tour of the fermentation room and were told about the differences with white and rose wine. We were then shown the cellar with a number of large wine barrels. It was followed by a light lunch which involved bruschetta, cured meats and cheese served with white and rose wine and then pasta with meat ragu which was served with 2 different red wines. We were also offered extra pasta when we had finished. We were then served tart and biscuits with dessert wine. We thoroughly enjoyed the wine tasting and we ended up purchasing a bottle of chianti wine to take back to our accomodation. On a side note, it was very much appreciated that there was also a tour group which joined us at the wine tasting and instead of being added to one large table, me and my husband were seated separately at our own table so we could enjoy the experience together instead of being merged into one loud group.

We were so fortunate to discover Montemorli and meet Vittorio and his family. I messaged them on WhatsApp to ask about a tour and Vittorio offered to give us a personal tour the next day. He walked us around the vineyard and talked about the varietals and their harvesting timeline etc. We then went to the cellars and learned about the aging and wine making processes. It was very interesting to hear the history of the vineyard and the Conforti family. Vittorio was also very patient and answered all of our questions. We then walked over to their outdoor kitchen and had a tasting with snacks and we loved all of the wines but could only buy a few to carry with us on the rest of our trip. We were there for several hours and never felt rushed or like we overstayed our welcome. The best part about all of this is that it was just the two of us and Vittorio, so we felt like we were visiting with a friend. This is a "tour" but it feels more like you are visiting family and it is much different than visiting one of the large, commercial wineries. I'd take this option any day over one of those and can't wait to visit again the next time we are in Italy!

This Italian Family winery was the most inviting, welcoming, informative tasting and tour we have ever been on. The wines were outstanding and the traditional Italian lunch was phenomenal. Vittorio and his beautiful wife were the most gracious hosts. I don’t have enough superlatives to aptly convey how unique and wonderful this experience was. Bravo!

Vitttorio was a great host! Very friendly and knowledgeable, his winery and the surrounding area was gorgeous and the lunch he prepared was delicious as was the wine. We ended up buying a case to ship home. Would definitely recommend this wine tasting tour!

If you want a truly informative wine tasting and tour, this is the one for you.Vittorio answered every question with the knowledge of seven generations passed down. The three Brothers are dedicated to the farm and vineyard and producing not only organic wine, but also produce, and are an dedicated part of the community. Truly an inspiring and satisfying experience.

The Castello di Strozzavolpe is an enchanting and historic location that beckons visitors with its allure. It exudes a timeless charm, transporting you to an era steeped in history. The castle itself is a magnificent structure that embodies the essence of the past, allowing you to immerse yourself in a bygone era. Moreover, it boasts a remarkable selection of wines, adding to the overall experience and ensuring a truly memorable visit.
What a magical, lovely experience! My family drove past this 12th Century castle on the way to our air bnb in Poggibonsi, Tuscany. My son contacted the owners via the castle's website, and Federico, who's grandfather purchased the castle many years ago, graciously gave us a tour. A very special place that would be perfect for a future event. The castle is also a winery! Thank you to Federico for the wonderful tour and the exquisite bottle of wine.
Lala K — Google review
The only reason I gave it 3 stars is because it's private property and you cannot really visit it or go on to the grounds. Despite this, I found out that it dates from the 11th century, and the parts that you can see look to be very intact, and it certainly look like it's that old. So, I got a real sense that I was looking at something that was frozen in time.

(Translated by Google) Too bad it can't be visited. It is said that on full moon nights the ghost of a fox wanders around. The soul wanders because of Boniface IV of Tuscany who strangled it with a noose because it made even the bravest knights run away by spitting flames at them (poor fox) and built the castle. The court magician predicted that the castle would exist as long as the body of the poor animal was preserved and so Boniface had her embalmed, filling her with molten gold and hid her in the walls of the tower. Another legend has it that in the red room of the castle the lovers Cassandra de Franceschi and a page of her husband were discovered and walled up forever inside the room. It is said that its presence can still be felt today.

From the Bernino area we set off on a mountain bike, climbing the road of the cypresses of Luco, arriving at this wonderful castle. We went all the way around and, passing along the road between the olive groves, we descended to Gavignano and Poggiagrilli. Breathtaking landscapes!
