Matsopoulos Mill, also known as the Mill of the Elves, is a historic flour mill complex in Trikala with a rich history dating back to 1884. Once a functioning industrial monument until the 1980s, it has now been transformed into a cultural center featuring a cinema, theatre, and local history museum. During Christmas, it becomes a vibrant grotto of lights attracting families from nearby towns and villages.
Lovely place for the youngest, so many interesting things to see, looking like a real christmas village, do not miss this place during the christmas time.
Bisera C — Google review
Very interesting museum that show all the info regarding the mill as also the procedure of grinding the seeds. Also, in the premises of the mill, there is a nice park, cafeteria, cinema.
Marios A — Google review
Around Christmas this park is transformed into a beautiful theme park with lots of food, games, activities for children & not only! Negative aspects is the fact that usually is overcrowded and you should be careful with children, not to get lost, and also it is necessary to have much more toilet places and much cleaner!
Z. N — Google review
Beautiful utilization of the place. Great xmas decorations. Bit on the overpriced side though. Worth a visit. Not worth buying anything.
TheTommyKay — Google review
The history and triumph of the family that brought the mill and updated is a very inspiring story.
MrDigious — Google review
This is a nice museum for a short visit and on the day we visited, it was free (may always be free, not sure?). While there are digital learning devices, there is not any real practical exhibits to speak of, that would have made it better for our son.

The Christmas Park is spectacular. It's an easy ride there from the Meteora area. Free admission

Mosque
Osman Sah Mosque, also known as Kozum or Kursum Mosque, is a significant landmark in Trikala, Greece. Built in the 16th century by a Turkish prince named Osman Shah, it stands as one of the few remaining remnants from the Ottoman empire. The mosque was constructed as a gesture of gratitude to the locals who had helped the prince recover from an injury.
This 16th century mosque is one of the few remnants from the Ottoman empire and one of the landmarks of the town. It was built by the famous architect Sinan Pasha for the prince Osman Shah, son of Sultan Suleiman. According to legend the mosque was built as a thank you when the prince was healed from his ailing illness in Trikala. Among the many mosques that the city used to have, this is the only one left standing.
Marc R — Google review
It's closed we could not get inside. It's a great example of Greek respect for religion. It could be used as a museum

The Koursoum Mosque is one of the most preserved Ottoman sights in Europe. The most interesting part is that the design was by Sinan Aga, a born christian.

Theme park
"The Mill of the Elves" is a festive destination that attracts over a million visitors from November to early January. This old water mill has been transformed into a magical toy and confectionery factory, where Santa Claus and his Elves welcome guests to their enchanting kingdom. The park offers rides, live entertainment, food stalls with various treats, an ice-skating rink, and the opportunity to purchase New Year charms.
Christmas spirit all over the city. Once entering the theme park you can fee the strong Christmas vibes refreshing your child memories. There are decent options to eat and drink according to any preferences. One visit is not enough to enjoy . Definitely will visit again
Panagiota K — Google review
Excellent for Christmas! Either you're a kid or a grown you'll have the best experienced fun. Many many little shops for your coffee, chocolate or even sausages and beer! Easy access and not so expensive
Alex A — Google review
If I could give 6 stars for something, this would be it! Above all expectations! World class! Starting from the smallest details, up to the whole picture, everything is made with style and crafted exceptionally. The whole town is living for this event: new open parking spaces all around the mill. About the mill: classic schoolbook example how to revive an old building, wrap it around a story, and sell it to the masses. Well done people of Trikala! Hats down!
Petar S — Google review
The best Christmas 🎄 thematic Park in Greece. It has a lot of food and winter activities for families and young couples. Its an ideal destination for everyone to enjoy. I enjoyed the vast selection of sweet and pastry along with burgers hot dogs etc. Recommended for everyone during Christmas, its such an ideal destination, marvelous work by the municipality of Trikala. Also Meteora a world heritage sight is few kilometers away, so you could travel for a full weekend of fun.
Panos T — Google review
The best Christmas themed park in Greece! No entry fees, cheap food, ample sweets! Very secure and clean with plenty of attractions. The old mill has a great tour with all of its history! The atmosphere is so Chirstmasy that it makes you feel like a little kid again! I wouldn't change a thing in there, and best of all it is 10 minutes walkjng distance from downtown Trikala which is breathtaking during the Season! Trust me, it is worth the drive wherever you live in Greece!!
Demosthenis A — Google review
The park is amazing and superior to anything in Greece. If the ice skating area was bigger, then the entire park would be equivalent to (if not better than) Vienna Winter Park.
Demetrios Z — Google review
Best Xmas theme park in Greece! Lots of happy people around. Stuff was super prepared to welcome visitors and ready to help. Well trained to deal with children and navigate adults. Absolutely recomended for family with kids, plus adults who still feel kids :) Bonus point: free entrance. Prices inside the park were also normal. Congrats to the municipality for its great effort!
Bubble G — Google review
I wonderful experience for children and adults alike - so magical. Food and rides are quite pricey but given that entrance is free and the atmosphere is lovely - a few extra euros are well worth it. Allow between 10 euros per person to eat and drink - and another 10-20 per person for rides or other treats…. All the people working were friendly and welcoming- all spoke English (thank you) - some fluently (the lady in the biscuit wheel spoke excellent English as did Father Christmas’ helpers and in the photo shop). We are learning Greek as best we can but are still pretty terrible at conversation. I worked in a tourist attraction in Australia and so appreciate the effort it takes to be happy, smiley and welcoming all day. The toilets were all very clean and the workers there were friendly too. Would 100% recommend

Museum
The ΚΕΝΤΡΟ ΕΡΕΥΝΑΣ- Μουσείο Τσιτσάνη (Tsitsanis Museum - Research Center) is located in the old Trikala prison building and offers a captivating journey into the life and legacy of the renowned Greek composer and lyricist, Vassilis Tsitsanis.
This is a unique place, a unique experience which has been set up with much love. It took many years - decades - to set it up and the passion of one individual, Stelios Karagiorgis, as well as the commitment of a few different mayors who believed in his vision and did everything they could to help make that happen (something that is unfortunately unusual un Greece). Collaboration and continuity can result in miracles, and this is certainly one of these! Certainly worth visiting! ❤️ If you do, don't miss the augmented reality based application tsitsanisAR: you will be able to watch Tsitsanis himself speaking, as well as other unique pieces of evidence that tell about his life. PS. You should naturally also visit the ottoman bath downstairs, as well as the remaining prison cells in the other building opposite to Tistsanis Museum.
Maria B — Google review
Amazing how a central area has changed so much throughout such a short period of time for Greek reality. Beautiful exhibition, that is open and free every day of the week. If only there was a greater mention on the former Ottoman architecture of the building. Do not miss, when in town.
Ir G — Google review
Renowned composer Tsitsanis Museum. Newly renovated, above the bathhouse/prison museum. A great place to learn about rebetika songs in a beautiful space. Information is available in Greek and English. Tsitsanis was born here in Trikala.
Oluchi C — Google review
A museum dedicated to a music legend of an era gone by. Tsitsanis was a great person who left a legacy behind that few have achieved. Really worth a visit!!
ΓΕΩΡΓΙΑ Α — Google review
Great architectural reconstruction. A building with centuries of history and significance. A pity the museum lacked the courage to face properly its darker past (its role as a Civil War prison) and open that discussion, as museums should. The Tsitsanis biography and baths exhibitions were both excellent: well set up and thoughtfully presented.
Orestis K — Google review
Really interesting Ottoman era building housing a museum and research centre. The building was recently renovated and converted to a musuem as it used to be a prison.During the renovation work, unknown old turkish baths (hamam) were uncovered on the bottom floor and work has been done to preserve them in order for visitors to be able to view and appreciate them. The first floor is dedicated to the legendary greek songwriter, singer, and buzuki player Vasilis Tsitsanis who was born in Trikala. Tsitsanis was a prolific writer and he is attributed with modernising the rebetiko sound making it more upbeat and accessible to the masses

Old Town of Trikala, also known as Varousi, is a charming district with narrow streets and traditional houses featuring sahinisia extensions. Taking a stroll through this area feels like stepping back in time, offering a picturesque experience that makes you forget you're in the city center. It's recommended to combine this walk with a visit to the castle and clock tower for an enriching historical excursion.
Great place for a relaxing stroll when the weather is good.

Matsopoulos Park, home to the historic Matsopoulos Park and Mill, stands as a significant industrial landmark in Greece. The park hosts various events, including the popular 'Mill of the Elves' event, offering both free and paid activities for children. Visitors can enjoy the festive atmosphere with Christmas markets, an Alice in Wonderland theme, labyrinth, food options, and encounters with Santa. Families can explore well-maintained walking paths while indulging in snacks and beverages available throughout the park.
Beautifully decorated, well organised, various activities for kids, nice food stalls. Fun is guaranteed! Highly recommended!

Martina D — Google review
Really opened my eyes about the Christmas fair, something you dont see in every country. Brings you close to the Spirit and puts you in the true Christmas vibe. Amazing.
Florin S — Google review
Excellent park for the little ones to enjoy the Christmas spirit. Well organised, clean and lots of garbage bins all around, and well made walking paths with a double stroller also (very rare in Greece). Only minus would come from the OVERPRICED hot wine, 6,5€/glass, which was bought from Lidl and wasn't spiced up with anything (so basically tastes like water) and wasn't even served hot as it should be. We asked to heat it up again at least, but as it wasn't warmer even after 10minutes, I gave up 😂 Despite the wine disappointment, we will go again with the kids after few years.

Holiday apartment rental
Varousi, a traditional house located in the old town of Trikala, offers a leisurely stroll through ornate architectural styles and historic churches. The surrounding area boasts tempting taverns and cafe-bars for a delightful dining experience. The fully equipped, clean, spacious apartment is conveniently located within a 15-minute walk from the city center. The friendly and responsive owners ensure a pleasant stay despite minor issues like one room's door not closing due to a large bed.
Great stay at very cosy and clean house. Thank you for having us, definitely will recommend to all of my friends :))

Overall, is very good. The apartment is as it described in the adv. It is fully equipped, clean, quite and spacious. The location is 15 mins walk from the city centre. Both owners are friendly, helpful and responsive. The door of the one room can't close as the bed is big and block it - however, not an issue. It is recommended for staying in Trikala.
Antonis A — Google review
This is an ok property for a small group we were 8 and it was too small for us, there is only one bathroom and the kitchen is very small. We dint like the towels but it could be just out taste, it may be ok for some people. The neighborhood looks a little scary for us and is in the oldest part of town, the historic part. We liked the city center better, more nightlife and restaurants. But I understand that some people may like this side of town better.

The Central Bridge of Trikala is a beloved spot for romantic walks and scenic views of the Lithaios River. It offers a surprising green jungle on the hill of Prophetes Helias, just a stone's throw away from the city. Nearby, visitors can enjoy an exotic twist on nature at the neighboring zoo, where kangaroos, llamas, and deer await.
Beautiful bride that connects booth sides of the city. You can a small artificial cascade on the next bridge. Looking forward on my next trip in the city 🤗

Place looks nice but when we went for a stroll down by the river bank, we noticed that the water stinks like sewage. Doesn't this place have a sewage process plant? Also the river bank was full of trash and rubble. I think Trikalians should have a chat with their town's authorities. Greeks are a wonderful people and they deserve better.
Blablatron B — Google review
Trikala is one of my favorite, if not my favorite, city in Greece. It's clean, its people are very nice and friendly but above all they are very, very, very polite. I was shocked to see that the young people there are so polite that I could not omit to mention my and my daughter and I. Went into a crouded of souvlaki restaurant to have something to eat and without any hesitation two young people just got up and offered their seats to us! It IS THE PLACE to visit at Christmas with the kids.

GREECE | Trikala! Wonderful view to the river!
Val B — Google review
An architectural jewel and a symbolic bridge. The central pedestrian bridge of Trikala is the main connecting point of the city, uniting the trikals, making it the reference point, functioning as a point of unity. Since the end of 1888, when the construction was completed, the bridge was the trademark, precisely because it was the one, the large, the central bridge. French engineers, from the company that built the Thessaly Railroad, edited design, study and construction, apparently inspired by bridges projects on the Seine. The minerals were shipped from France. In the middle of the route of one of the two axes of the city, on the north – south axis, the bridge has connected the old with the new city. Having already been incorporated into the new Greek state (21 August 1881), Trikala began to form a new perspective, based on a new perspective. On a financial level, the city was – and constitutes – a rural and commercial road, a production site for agricultural products and a hub of four-axes: Giannena – Larissa, Lamia – Grevena. Moreover, the city of Trikala constituted a western and northern tip of the bridgehead against the armaments of Aspropotamos, Agrafa and Hassia during the Ottoman domination. Since 1881, this role has been officially changed (although its importance has been diminished since the mid-18th century, with the transfer of the capital of Thessaly, from Trikala to Larissa). Nowadays, Trikala is the main shopping street, the main road connecting four (current) regions: Thessaly, Epirus, Sterea Ellada, western Macedonia. The bridge gives the feeling of airy construction and at the same time rests on solid foundations. In 1941 he escaped the blast of the retreating British troops. In 1996 it was declared a historic listed monument. In 1997 it stood up, becoming a reference point with its new look. In 2015 it was renovated, while architectural lighting was installed. Its originality lies in its function, as it is used as a square, as a place of rest, as a meeting place for the youth. It is a pole of attraction for visitors and trikals, as it “communicates” with the wet element and talks with Asclepius, which looks at the city.

Bridge
The Arched Bridge of Portaikos River at Pyli is a historic site located in the village of Pyli, just 20 km from Trikala. This ancient commercial station has retained its significance over the centuries and remains a lively and populated village today. The bridge itself is a testament to the region's rich history and engineering prowess, with weathered stones that bear the marks of time and recent storms.
It was a relatively modest stone bridge dating from the 1500s. ( The exact date varies depending on which signage you read) . There are picnic benches on the riverbank to make for a pleasant picnic spot. . A trip might be best if combined with visits to other nearby destinations.

A nice place to stop. When we were there, there was barely any water. If you walk over the bridge, there is a nice walking trail on the other side too. Cafe is available there as well.

A traditional monument of the mountainious sceenery of Greece.. Mountains and rivers come along with those kind of bridges which usually where build since last 200 years... Where ever I travel in Greece I always admire the architecture of those bridges, and we can found them almost everywhere, and each one has its own story!!! Worth visit one every time!
Giovanni — Google review
Truly amazing place to visoy. To be clear bridge is nice, but real beauty is whole experience here. You got stone bridge, river, and two trails. First left, going mainly up, with gorgeous views. Its markt and split to normal one, and route to climbing place. Go climbing one (yellow) even if you are not climber - just to see sharp edhes of climbing cliffs, there is nice water stream and old trees there. Second, easier and more interesting trail is on right from bridge. You can go 1km on one side of river, and then second bridge to cross. On way on starting side of river are green heaven forest with lot of very old trees. One of then will give you lotr like experience (hidding in tree roots from ghoul rider). Have fun

Trikala City Center Square is a delightful hub that perfectly captures the charm of this picturesque town. As you stroll through the square, you'll be greeted by a lovely historical monument and well-kept gardens, creating an inviting atmosphere for relaxation. The area features a serene artificial lake where families can enjoy some quality time together. With plenty of cafes, restaurants, and shops nearby, there's no shortage of options to satisfy your cravings or indulge in some retail therapy.
A nice place for a family/ couple /friends visit. When you first enter seems amazing but as you walk through the park seems like a cheap luna park. Children will definitely enjoy it. Most games cost around 3€. There is no entrance fee. If you dont play any games, it takes less than 1 hour to walk around with slow pace. There is a free parking nearby. Tends to be busy during christmas time.

Castle
The Byzantine Castle of Trikala, dating back to the 6th century, offers a glimpse into the city's history. The site features remnants of a Roman bath, mosaics, and a Byzantine temple. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the city and surrounding area from this hilltop location. While exploring the castle grounds, keep an eye out for Greek tortoises in the gardens.
Nice center placed in city, free to access. You can climb on clock tower to have best around city view / panorama. Central citadel bulding itself is close (in 2022) but You can see some parts outside. There is additional trail around whole citadel.
Outsider K — Google review
Built by emperor Justinian upon -and with the use of- the ruins of the ancient Greek city of Trikki, among the most prominent in Thessaly, this castle was kept in service ever since. The Byzantines used it to monitor and control the rich farmlands of the region. This function was continued by the Ottomans, who maintained it with minor modifications, namely the adjustments on the ramparts to accommodate cannons and (much later) the clock tower. Its location is ideal for the aforementioned purposes, yet its natural defenses are not as forbidding as usually seen at many a Greek acropolis. An additional enclosure of a secondary wall and large towers at the most strategic positions remedy this imperfection quite effectively. If you happen to be around, it is well worth a visit. The castle is well maintained and offers an interesting and easy visit, which can easily be combined with a refreshment or a meal at one of the many restaurants and cafés to be found in the city just outside the walls.

The Byzantine Castle of Trikala is definitely worth a visit! you can really feel the atmosphere of the past while walking around the ruins. The view from the top is amazing, overlooking the whole city and the surrounding area. Everything is well preserved, and the area is clean and maintained. I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Trikala!

Pretty nice historical Byzantine castle at the top of a hill in Trikala city. There is a cafe restaurant at the castle and the beautiful landmark of the city, the clock tower. Clean place, with beautiful view of the city and the area around, many nice spots for memorial photos.
Pierros Z — Google review
Nice view over town and to the mountain top snow and some old ruins. Free entry. There are a few parking spots inside the walls that were free even though the big car park at the base was full. No access inside inner castle or clock tower when we were there.
Michael D — Google review
It is a great monument nicely preserved on the inside. but neglected on the outside. A part of it is covered in graffiti. But worth a visit. The cafe inside is amazing.

Nestled on the northeastern side of Trikki, you'll find a remarkable castle that dates back to the 6th century AD, originally constructed by Byzantine Emperor Justinian atop the ancient Acropolis. This historical fortress has withstood the test of time, having been restored during Ottoman rule and featuring five impressive towers along with several battlements. The structure is thoughtfully divided into three distinct blocks, making it a fascinating site for history enthusiasts.
