Narigama Beach, located about 2 km south of the main beachfront in Hikkaduwa, is a long stretch of golden sandy coastline offering stunning sunset views and excellent surfing opportunities. This picturesque and peaceful beach is known for its ideal surfing conditions and is far less crowded than the main Hikkaduwa beach.
Beautiful long clean and quiet sandy beach, about 5km long. Southern end is peaceful, northern end has several Surf Schools, beach bars and restaurants. Waves can be fun to enjoy, but you have to learn how to handle them. When you know when you can enter the ocean, you can also swim (for experienced swimmers!). You can find some beach bars with sunbeds and sun-umbrellas - free upon consumption. Or hotels on the beach have their own sunbeds and umbrellas. Amazing place. Not crowded like Mirissa or Unawatuna. Recommended. Many restaurants by the road also.

My first beach experience in Sri Lanka.. it was decent. The beach itself was pretty clean and a little crowded but not too bad. Several restaurants with beach loungers for rent. Some will try to take advantage of you so be careful. I found a restaurant that said as long as I buy at least a drink (300 LKR) I could use their lounger all day. Surfboards for rent for an hour or all day at good rates. Plenty of free parking and no entry fees. The water was clear but cloudy and vey choppy. Not the best for swimming but awesome for surfing. Recommended
Lovely long sandy beach with good surf. North part of the beach is busy and has lots of bars, restaurants, hotels, surf schools and lifeguards. South end of the beach is much quieter with rough seas, less facilities and no lifeguards. Photos are from the southern end of the beach. The bottom end of the beach is sheltered and good for swimming. TIP: DO NOT buy corn-on-the-cob from the beach seller at the north end of the beach as it is inedible and a rip-off.
Less beach than I remember. More sun beds though. Probably the safest place for swimming in Hikkaduwa - though you still need to be sensible.
Sooooo much nicer then Hikkaduwa beach! This beach is enormous and and top great for surfing. Lots of bars, restaurants and hotels along it. We recommend Neelas :)
Great place to be and learn to surf. Narigama has two main surf breaks and the beach break is good for beginners to intermediate and the main break mostly pumping barrels for pro levels.
Not one of the nicest beach in srilanka but quite local. It’s kind of dirty and a lot bugs mosquitoes.Stayed here last day of the trip because it was close to Colombo.
The best beach we found in Hikkaduwa. Has very large sandy beach. Not busy, very quiet. The sunset is beautiful. But it's hard to find shade during the day. Also it's very wavy, which is awesome for surfers, but not that friendly for swimmers.

Really impressed with this dive shop. My girlfriend got Open Water Certified this week and our instructor (shoutout Silvia) was so kind, thorough and excellent at explaining the concepts and making us feel comfortable. They also care a lot about safety compared to some other Sri Lankan dive shops and the equipment is in good shape. Highly recommend!

Superb diving experience with dive for you. They have very coperative , professional and helpful staff. I was diving after gap of almost 4 yrs but they helped me refresh my diving skills in pool and then I completed 4 open water dives in next 2 days. Also they were very flexible in choosing dive sites for me as per my requirement.
I had a blast diving with them. We went on a two dive wrack dive trip to see an old cargo ship a historic wooden vessel. Also, there is another dive site on a reef. By the way, there are really huge turtles floating in the water right in front of the dive shop - really cute.
Amazing experience of diving with them. It was our first dive, and we were really nervous, but Malinda really helped us in being comfortable with the diving and pushed us when we were almost giving up 🤣. It's located on the beach side of Hotel Hikka Tranz. First, they make you practice in the pool, and once you are comfortable, take you to the diving location in the boat. Perfect experience for a first-time divers like us. Go for it.

If you're looking for an unforgettable underwater adventure, look no further than Blue Deep Diving Centre. This family-friendly dive shop in Hikkaduwa goes above and beyond to ensure a memorable experience for everyone, including those with little ones. They prioritize customer satisfaction over profit, even rescheduling trips for better conditions. With a dedicated team that includes two guides for families with children, they provide personalized attention and care.
There are seven dive companies in Hikkadua and I visited four. By far the most professional, friendly, informative and most importantly safety conscious was this one. As you enter you are greeted with a wonderful simile from Sonika. She then introduces you to John one of the diving instructors there. He then will discuss dive sites, availability, costs and experience level. It’s all very bespoke and refreshing compared to other companies in the area.
The dive shop is fully equipped and all staff wear uniform so they’re easily identifiable. There’s a map of the area, dive sites, whiteboard and desk that is managed by Sonika. There’s dive briefings which are thorough, diagrams and in English. All nationalities are diving here and they cater for this. A lovely man (instructor) from Russia, Valery I immediately struck up a friendship with.
Onto the morning of the dive, I arrived at 07:25, fill out the necessary paperwork and got my equipment allocated to me. The previous day, John had taken care of this so to save time. I planed to have two dives that morning. My dive buddy Philip was new to diving and he was very confident. Once aboard the speedboat it was off to the first dive site.
The skipper was Hikka, great guy who has vast experience. The boat team were very friendly and helpful. Onboard were dive instructors Valery and John, dive masters Sukri, Saman & Saeun. All were professional, assisted you and joined in with the camaraderie. I hadn’t dived in 18 months so after a quick buoyancy check, three of us went on our first dive. The site name was Kirala Gala . We reached it in approximately 8 minutes.
I requested a 15 litre tank as I do use more air than the average diver. This was assigned to me at no extra cost. The visibility was 25-30 meters, temperature approximately 28/29 and maximum depth was 35 meters. I had no dive computer, my dive buddy did. We saw a jackfish, several bat fish, a puffer fish, a huge moray eel, butterfly fish, groupers, snappers, a lobster, to name but a few. I was rusty at first but after 5 - 10 mins soon settled into the dive. Fish identification laminated charts would have been nice as a reference of what to look out for during the dive. When back on the boat would have been nice to say “ did you see….?”
After our safety stop, return to the boat and some crackers to eat ( from Valery ) it was time to return to the dive shop for our surface interval. The clientele onboard were four Russians, a German, Indian, Chinese and myself (Welsh). We all shared stories and got on very well. All sharing a passion for quality diving. After half an hour, it was time to head out to the second dive site.
The second site was roughly a 35 min boat ride. The wreck was SS Conch. The Conch is a steam-powered oil tanker. One of the first oil tankers in the world, it was built in 1892 and sank in 1903. Visibility was fantastic and we enjoyed a dive time of 50 minutes. Important to note that not many other dive companies over crowd the dive sites at the same time. There must be a general code of conduct not to saturate the area thus ruining the experience.
I initially only wanted to participate in two dives but was persuaded to do three. Third dive site was The Earl Of Shaftesbury, a four masted sail ship from England which sank in 1878. Though not as exciting as the Conch, we did manage to see a blue spotted stingray hiding under the wreckage. Upon returning to the dive shop, unloading the boat and returning our washed wetsuits, courtesy tea was provided. We reflected on the dives and basked in the glorious Sri Lankan sun after taking a fresh water shower.
There’s a restaurant adjacent to the dive shop. Lockers are provided for your valuables and there are waterproof boxes to take your phone for photo opportunities onboard. I highly recommend this company, a well deserved five stars. Look for the PADI logo outside when comparing dive shops. This way you know they’re approved and credible. 🌟

They took real good care during our basic discovery scuba course. First 20 minutes theory and equipment handling. Then good 30 practice session in shallow water. Then they take you to practice spot and train you for 30 to 40 minutes under water at around 12m depth. Overall 3 hours session including boat ride.
Only suggestion is, their photography handling can be better 😋. For additional $30, you can see the quality of photos yourself and won't say it's top job, isn't it?
But equipment, actual diving training, patient instructor, those are really good, no doubt. Highly recommended to explore the diving options here.
We booked a snorkelling trip with blue deep as a family of 3 with a 5 year old.
I couldn’t recommend Blue deep highly enough.
Firstly, we had booked with them for one morning but they asked to rearrange for better conditions, which I felt showed consideration for the customer over profit.
Secondly, our 5 year old daughter can’t swim, but was desperate to see the fishes and a turtle. We were allocated 2 guides, so one could supervise our daughter. They couldn’t have been more loving, caring or patient. They spent time with her to acclimatise her to the water and learning to snorkel, and she got to see the turtles. They even carried her down the beach like she was family. It was actually lovely to watch. She was absolutely delighted and was a real core memory for us.
We were so grateful to have had such caring guides for the morning! Thank you so much!

Of course i was about to do the same mistake like most of the people trying to dive in sri lanka and that was “looking for cheapest service around”. Not a good idea.
I got the recommendation from my friend to go here, because she did regret she used cheaper service instead of this.
This is very reasonable and fair friendly priced dive company - money are worth of every penny. U will understand when u try.

Since the first moment i got in touch with agency and manager Sonika actively replying in WhatsApp company number i had a good feeling. And i knew that now i found it and dont need to make bigger research.
We spoke about everything important, i told them about my squeezed schedule and they allowed my calendary to fit into exact amount of time spend above and under the water. It took a place between 30.3 until 2.4.
And trust me, nothing is better than good quality service you paid for and its worth. In Sri Lanka there are many scammers, guys be careful and think twice.

Very friendly staff, explained everything understandably. There’s option to rent necessary equipment and they have everything so you only need your swimsuit. Also there are showers so you can wash yourself with fresh water. Between dives, on board they provide you water bottles and snacks. I recommend this diving centre strongly.
We had a fantastic time snorkeling with Sandaru. The water was clear, the fish were colorful, and he made sure we felt safe and happy the whole trip.

Easily the best food, service and location we have experienced in Hikkaduwa. All meals are prepared fresh each day with all ingredients sourced locally and cooked with love by the chef, Runga. All of the staff are so kind, caring and attentive, ensuring that you are always comfortable. We have been multiple times and can highly recommend the breakfast, sunset barbecue dinner, cocktails and a king coconut on their beautiful sun beds. The whole experience made extra special by resident dogs, Sonny and Sandy. Do not miss this place on your stay in Hikkaduwa 💛

We stumbled along to Thambili through the desire to get ever-so-slightly away from the bottleneck one km up the road. We were in search of something peaceful and found the perfect spot with Chamika and family. We made ourselves at home on their comfy bean bags after a couple of drinks and enjoyed watching their two floofy dogs living their best lives all afternoon. A lovely Italian tourist encouraged us to try out body boarding on Thambili's free-to-use boards and we hung out and watched their little christmas decorations spin in the breeze. The stuff dreams are made of! During the afternoon we were invited to stay for their bbq and the smiling staff took our fish order. As the sun went down we moved inside to a table and had a delicious feast and a few drinks including a decent glass of white wine. This is a cosy beach nook and a total treat! Our Italian friend told us he thought it was the best fish he'd had on the beach - but if you've missed their pre-order then go to the green cafe just next door which is great too!
A wonderful place to have your breakfast, just in front of the sea. Fresh food and brilliant service, I will miss it but keep the scenery in my mind.

What a gem! The owner and staff are absolute legends, great service, beautiful food, and I fully recommend the beach BBQ which my friends and I devoured on our last night. A real oasis in Sri Lanka. Also if you are into snorkelling the owner will get you a fantastic deal with some local contacts that was way better than what was being offered on the official tours.
My wife and I came here for an early breakfast. It was such a nice experience. We were the only guests and watched the waves breaking on the sandy shore. The food was delicious and there is a nice variety on the menu. The prices are reasonable and the staff were really nice and attentive. I would definitely recommend coming here to start your day.

They got the best full body massage in town. Headed over with my wife and kids and we got 60 minutes full body massages. So good and relaxing after the massage. Highly recommended

Awful massage - the worst we have ever experienced! We were tempted by the 1800 rupee for an hour full body massage.. The 2 young men masseuses were nice enough and tried hard but it was as if they were making it up as they were going along. Part of the massage involved being punched in the heel, rubbed with a rough dirty towel and it was like we were in a medieval torture chamber. None of it was particularly enjoyable and didn't in any way conform to western massage 'etiquette'. According to the Internet there are much better places for a massage on this road. Look around.
Massage and facial was rubbish.
The owner lied to us saying that we would get a steam facial.. turned out they used a scrub and some moisturiser. Could have done this at home. Then when we ask why they didn't do it.. he said unapologetically, they must have forgot.... the massage here was poor in comparison to all the places we went to in the other areas.

Very very bad experience. Worste massage ever. Do not recomend this place to anyone. Unexperienced people pretending to be massuse that leave exposed naked. Fan on, no music, noise from the street and not eve a glass of water offered. We travel a lot and had loads of massages throughout Asia and never complained. My girlfriend left very upset an felt violeted. Everyone AVOID this place. There is a lot of options here....shop around !

We had a wonderful kayaking experience. Before coming to this place we hadn't tried kayaking. But that was not am issue for us because they gave us a proper kayaking lesson. This is a family business and all the members were very friendly. Lahiru's father was guiding us and he explained many things about the surrondings. The price is also very reasonable for that kind of an experience. The best thing is, after the kayaking tour we were served some black tea by Lahiru's mother. I can recommend this place to anyone who is willing to have a perfect kayaking experience. 🚣♂🌊🍃

We had an amazing kayaking experience at Hikkaduwa Lagoon Safari and Kayaking Adventure by Lahiru’s Place. 🌿🚣 It is a lovely family-owned, eco-friendly business that truly cares about nature and their guests. Our guide was Lahiru’s father, who was so warm, knowledgeable, and passionate about the lagoon. He took us through beautiful, peaceful spots that we would have never discovered on our own.
The whole experience felt very personal and authentic – not rushed, but relaxed and enjoyable. We also loved that they focus on eco-friendly practices, making us feel like we were contributing to protecting this beautiful environment while enjoying it.

This was my first time camping and kayaking and I'm so happy that it was with Hikkaduwa Lagoon Safari and Adventure. We got to camp on a boat which was absolutely amazing. They provided us with clean tents, washroom and changing facilities. The owners of the facility were very friendly and caring. We got to kayak for 3 hours and it was a lot of fun. Our guide was very friendly and took good care of us. He was patient when we fumbled with the kayaks sometimes and was very helpful. Also he took a lot of photos for us (which is one of the main requirements for me on a trip 😂) Overall loved the experience and will definitely recommend these guys' service.
We went kayaking on 26th October, and it was honestly one of the best experiences we’ve had.
Lahiru, the owner, was super friendly and easy to talk to. He guided us through the whole tour showing every beautiful spot around the lagoon and making sure we were having a great time. His mother was so kind too! After our ride, she even served us plain tea and biscuits, which felt so homely and sweet.
We spent about 2 and a half hours kayaking, enjoying the calm water and an amazing sunset view. It was 1000% worth it — truly relaxing, peaceful and fun.
Highly recommend Lahiru’s place if you’re ever in Hikkaduwa ,you’ll love the experience just as much as we did.

We had a very peaceful and interesting day! The guide had a lot of interesting knowledge about different plants and animals and his English was very good! We liked that the tour was done with paddles instead of engine since it offered a more peaceful experience and helped us get closer to wildlife!

If you are in Hikkaduwa, you should definitely get a bikini tailored! I had two made and they fit perfectly and are so beautiful! You can bring inspiration pictures and choose from many beautiful fabrics. After 24 hours (sometimes even sooner) the bikini is ready! And the tailor is an incredibly nice man!

I got two bikinis made here (ordered one first, then liked how it turned out so much I ordered a second). It didn't look like he made board shorts although the card said "bikinis and short, it looked mostly to be bikinis and casual one piece swim suits.
The process was super easy. Walked in around 6pm, picked which style I liked from the example photos or o (and could have altered them some too), select my fabrics (good selection and quality), he measured me, I paid a deposit and he told me to come back the next day around noon. When I ordered the 2nd he told me it could be done in about 2 hrs but I had plans so I told him I would come back the next day). Price is very reasonable (at this time it was, 5000 lkr total, 3000 lkr as a deposit and the rest upon pick up).

The owner is friendly and explains the process of making batik while showing his garden and explaining the plants used for coloring. The batik designs are unique and partly colored with organic colors, available at reasonable prices based on effort.
We are so happy we made this stop on our last day in Sri Lanka. We loved meeting Hirantha and his wife. They were so kind and welcoming. Hirantha gave us a tour of his batik workshop and property. He explained the process of making each piece (which can take 4-5 weeks to complete) using cotton/silk, wax, dyes, and various tools. His work is absolutely beautiful and each one tells a different story. We had such a hard time choosing which one to bring home.. so we ended up with three. Truly amazing art work. We cannot wait to display them!

I arrived because of lonely planet suggestion, was welcomed wholeheartedly by the owner and his family. Not only did he show me the procedure of batik, but also his beautifully lush garden with avocado, banana, mango, lemon and mamy other types of trees.
I knew nothing about batik except that it's something made in Sri Lanka. He gave me a fantastic overview about the art, and his pieces are pure craftsmanship and art to me.
Prices range accordingly to size, complexity, details and colours used. There is also a selection of shirts, scarfs, dresses.
Such beautiful and breathtaking work, and once again amazing hospitality, even if it is a business. Especially in such a touristic place as Hikkaduwa, I was happy to discover this hidden gem.

We were also invited to wander through the lush garden, where we got to meet his lovely family. They made us feel right at home, sharing stories, laughter, and their deep-rooted traditions. As it happened to be New Year’s season, they even treated us to some local sweets and the most delicious bananas we’ve ever had—fresh from their garden. It was such a generous and thoughtful gesture that added a truly personal touch to our visit.
This wasn’t just a shopping stop—it was a rich cultural experience, full of warmth, beauty, and connection. We left with a few batik pieces that we will treasure, not only for their craftsmanship but also for the memories attached to them.

The kind boss welcomed us and we took a look at his lab. We were very well entertained with his explanations. He knows perfectly how to use the batik technique on cotton and silk. My friend decided to buy one of his masterpieces!
It was lovely to meet this passionate artist and see his traditional batik making passed on through three generations. We were treated like guests at his home, while waiting for him to come back from Galle just to explain his work - his lovely wife made us slime apple juice! The showroom had so many beautiful works - wall hangings, sarongs, shirts, tablecloths, bed covers etc. Everything is using top quality unpolished cotton, and dies sourced from countries including Germany, China, sometimes Korea etc. and he mixes to get the colours he wants. Designs he draws with some done by a designer friend and range from traditionally inspired to more abstract. All waxing is done three times and on both sides of the fabric by hand by J. Hirantha Wimalaranthe himself.
We bought three finished pieces and one that needed the final black done and we will pick up in two days. They are unique reminders of this culturally rich country. Prices were reasonable for the quality too!
This is a must visit place, and really where you should buy batik in the South - each one is a unique individual creation. Don't bother with any of the many tourst shops in Hikkaduwa or other places...

Owner showed the process and had a little shop too. Better to buy authentic handmade Batik, then the commercial ones in all the main shops. Such labour intensive craftsmanship. Owner also showed his garden full of pineapple, avocado and papaya. Definitely worth a visit!
