The Praetorian Palace, a 15th-century Venetian Gothic castle, is a prominent landmark in the charming Old Town of Koper. It houses tourist information and government offices. The town boasts an array of architectural landmarks such as the Koper Tavern, Muda Gate, Loggia, Fontica, De Ponte Fountain, Casa Veneziana, Carpacci House, Foresteria and Armeria.
Koper's main square. Beautiful buildings, coffee, ice cream near the gate. The old pharmacy is free in the building.

We were on an NCL cruise from Venice to Portugal last summer and the first stop was Koper, a beautiful old medieval city. We had a great time just walking around and found maim square with the Bell Tower and the Palace. Well worth the visit.

Place of worship
The Bell Tower in Koper is a prominent landmark that stands at 54 meters tall and offers stunning views of the city and its surroundings. Originally part of a Roman fortification, it has been transformed over the centuries and now serves liturgical purposes. Visitors can climb 204 steps to reach a platform 43 meters high, where they can enjoy panoramic vistas. The tower also houses the oldest functioning bell in Slovenia, which was cast in Venice in 1333.
€5 for an adult to climb up (discounts available for some groups, see photo), and it's worth it for the lovely views across the town and out to sea as well. There are bells at the top, but the highlight is walking outside on to the terrace which goes all the way around the top. It was quiet on our visit so very easy to relax and spend time taking in the views.
Daniel M — Google review
The tower recently underwent refurbishment. Is now open again and cost €5 euro to enter. Maybe is worth €3. A good climb up a metal stairway, which turns into a very small spiral stair and then out of a closed door at the top. A jelly legged view. Very safe but if you don’t like heights nothing feels safe!
Shirley G — Google review
We went on an NCL cruise last summer from Venice to Portugal. One f the first stops was Korea, a beautiful old city. We walked all around the medieval old town. The Bell Tower is just beautiful. We did not climb the stairs due to my wife’s health problem. But we did visit the palace next door and had coffee and pastry across the square. Really nice.
Perry H — Google review
Impressive old tower with working clock, you can climb up inside to see the bells and walk around the top for a view of the town
Peter M — Google review
The bell tower offers excellent views of the Koper. Well worth the cost of €5pp. Highly recommend it.
Aidan Q — Google review
Definitely one of the best attractions in Koper. Highly recommended to visit if you are in the city. Worth paying the entrance fees to go all the way up. Great views from the top of the tower. 200 steps would take you all the way up.
Rahim A — Google review
Typical Italian looking clock tower located in the heart of Koper (Capodistria in Italian). It's 5 eur for adults to climb up the 241 stairs. Along the way there are some descriptive boards with various historical information about Koper. The views from the top are phenomenal, with views of the Adriatic, the Alps and the Italian coast.

Fountains
The Da Ponte Fountain is a stunning historical monument located in the Old Town of Koper. Constructed in 1666 by the Venetian architect Antionio da Ponte, it stands as one of the most impressive attractions in the area. This Baroque-style fountain serves as both a decorative piece and a functional water supply for the city's residents. Its octagonal basin features an arch that symbolizes a bridge, giving it an appearance that resembles a bridge at first glance.
Beautiful town right on the marina. A lift takes you up to the old part of koper..very clean, very friendly and extremely quirky. Lots of narrow streets and unusual shops for that something different.. Had the most amazing tasting coffee just off from the square. If you are on a cruise, be advised you will need to carry your passport with you and its about 10 min to get back through security.....standing in 31 degrees heat...but well worth a visit 😀
Tracy H — Google review
We were on a long cruise with NCL last year and one of the early stops was Koper. We got off the ship and self guided around using google maps. We found this fountain just walking around. Not much to see but just admire the old workmanship
Perry H — Google review
A beautiful fountain located outside the central area of town. There’s a large square where the locals hang out. There are a few restaurants nearby.
Melanie E — Google review
The fountain dates from 1666, replacing an older one on the same site. It's in a shape of a bridge, surmounting an octagonal water basin surrounded by fifteen columns, each bearing the arms of local noble families who had contributed funds toward the fountain. The fountain was used as a source of potable water until 1898.
Vadim S — Google review
This place was beautiful.. With influences predominately from Italy, it reminded me of being in a mini Napoli.. Surrounded by still water which glistened in the 33 degrees heat the narrow side streets led to a medieval courtyard with a mixture of Gothic and renaissance architecture.. A gorgeous place to visit and only about an hour or so away from ljubljana..

The Koper Regional Museum, located in a stunning 17th-century Venetian building, offers an extensive exhibition that will captivate history enthusiasts and art aficionados. It provides a fascinating insight into the opulence of the Koper Renaissance and the Venetian era. The museum's permanent and temporary exhibitions delve into the city's history, particularly during the Venetian and Renaissance periods.
I really liked this museum. There are NFC-tagged audioguides all over the museum, which allowed me to really dive into the content provided. The different floors have many different topics and everyone should find something interesting. Especially check out the outer building in the back of the garden, where you will find the lastest history of the region. Very interesting! The whole thing is also really cheap for students!
Marvin T — Google review
Do nit buy the combined ticket. Only one eur more, but for the last museum, nah. This worth it only
Ádám T — Google review
Very interesting museum with lots of artifacts spanning the region's history. Many displays have English translations and there are QR codes to access online audio guides. The building, a former palace, is large and worth a visit.

Impressive museum. There is a contemporary history wing which goes through WWI to present times, an excellent reminder of the recent struggles of the people. The rest of the museum is quite large and full of artifacts! Definitely worth a visit and the 9€ entry fee. It is laid out by historical era, so you can really get a feel for the evolution of the region!
Emma W — Google review
The garden is very beautiful! The exhibition could be better guided/labeled etc.

Fantastic Museum - densely packed documentation of history, culture of Koper. QR code with English/Italian/Slovenian audio guide on many of the exposed objects, with rich explanations, revealing details and interpretation to the objects. This is very well worth time. Amazing.
Thomas R — Google review
Worth visiting, cheap tickets, great offer (the student ones cost just 2,5€!). Exhibits on several floors, there's also a small backyard as part of the museum. Feels as if it's kind of underrated, considering how rich in rarities, art and culture it is

The magnificent Praetorian Palace stands on one side while Loggia, an intriguing edifice where significant civic discussions used to occur, occupies the other. Today, visitors can delight in a café that offers a remarkable vantage point of the square. Adjacent to it lie the 'Foresteria' and 'Armeria', which once served as guesthouses and armories respectively.

Originally a trading place and meeting place, then a coffee house. Now it's a very nice restaurant, a great place for a meal or a few beers or a bottle of local wine.

Entering the Slovenian city of Koper evokes special emotions as you pass through a series of beautiful streets with the seal of a former Venetian look. The center of Koper, which exudes a special relaxing energy, is dominated by Tito Square. There are many beautiful and historic buildings in this historic picturesque Mediterranean square. Among them is the Town Lodge. This lodge is located in front of Praetorians Palace at Titov Square. Interesting is the historical role of such buildings in Istria. The Town Lodge, a medieval public purpose building, is an essential element of living within urban settlements. The Lodge was any space where direct contact between citizens and authorities was made. From the very beginning it was the meeting place of the inhabitants of Koper. Built by Venetians in the 15th century, it is always offered to be an interesting place for social life. This Lodge is now an exhibition gallery on the first floor, and an interesting ground floor cafe with a beautiful setting and views of the entire Tito Square.

Stolnica Marijinega vnebovzetja, also known as the Cathedral of the Assumption, is a stunning architectural gem located in Tito Square in Koper. The cathedral boasts a mix of Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles and features a 36-meter-tall belfry, offering visitors breathtaking panoramic views after climbing 204 stairs.
This cathedral is one of the biggest churches in Slovenia. Almost completely white and quiet interior contrasts with the lively square in front of the church. Art lovers will find some precious art pieces (main and side altars) and they will certainly apreciate the breathtaking white facade. Visit of the bell tower is possible as well.
Meta P — Google review
It's not the most stunning looking cathedral from the outside but the interior is lovely. Although the whole setting with the bell tower and palace in the surrounding square makes for some great photos and a lovely place to walk and relax. The bell tower was €3 each and has 204 steps to the top. As usual you get a good view from the top. It is also suppose to be the oldest working bell tower in Slovenia.
JASON B — Google review
We stopped in Koper while on a cruise in the Mediterranean. We took a self guided walking tour using Google maps. This square was very picturesque with great buildings to study. We had coffee at a nice restaurant overlooking the square. The church is on the square. Outside it is not much to look at but the inside is quite beautiful.
Perry H — Google review
In the main square of Koper, Tito Square, is the beautiful Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary. The cathedral was built in the 15th century in the Gothic style and later completed in the Renaissance style. In front of the cathedral is the town tower, which has been converted into a bell tower.
Lavi S — Google review
A beautiful cathedral church to visit which was open on a Sunday. There was no entrance fee. Next door was the Bell Tower to enter for a small fee. You had to walk up to the top which had a beautiful view of the area.

Taverna, located in Carpaccio square, was originally a salt warehouse built in the late 16th century. As salt panning declined in the early 20th century, the building found new purpose hosting various events and concerts. The area around Taverna offers stunning ocean views and is dotted with popular cafes and restaurants. Visitors can also enjoy international cuisine festivals here. Although it only serves snacks, this Mediterranean bar offers a delightful selection of cold bites and quality wine on tap.
We were here before 2 Weeks on Ice skating and it was amazing, place is in half-closed area which protects you for wind and direct Sunlight, it cost only 5€ per person include Ice skating shoes which are worm and good shaped.. we recommend this place to everyone! And small tip; if you want to have more space on ice go rather before 3pm ;) 👌☝️☝️

Originally called St Marks, this was a storage site for the port. It is now a very useful open venue for town festivals, concerts, performance and events.
Peter M — Google review
Returning from the main square we came to the Tavern. An international cuisine festival was held. We were delighted with the great flavors of Indian, Thai, Hungarian ... cuisine. The history of this building is more than interesting. The inhabitants of Koper were engaged in the production of salt as early as the 12th century, there are written sources which mention the salt industry in 1182. For the sake of salt storage, a San Marco salt warehouse was built, which is today called the Tavern. In addition of Tavern, there were inns, where fishermen and fishing boat owners met. When the saltpans were abolished in 1912, the building was remodeled and intended for fish market, trade, storage and catering.

Taverna winter ice experience! Great place, great ice, middle of Koper by the sea. Kind service and simbolic prices. What else do you want. Not big but big enough. You can rent the gear. They have the penguins and leo which entertain the smaller children who lose their fear after a few rounds already. Historical landmark
The Totto ex Gavardo Palace, notable for its crimson exterior, is easily recognizable. Situated a brief distance away from Carpaccio Square on Kidric Street, this historical site comprises three interconnected edifices dating back to the 18th century. Within the palace's walls are weathered murals, an impressive stone staircase, and exquisite architectural elements befitting its erstwhile lavish nature.
(Translated by Google) The palace was created by merging several palaces and town houses in the 18th century, all buildings were owned by the Gavardo family. Inside, the palace hides an atrium and an interesting representative staircase. On the first floor, there are numerous salons, where the original Baroque ceiling and wall paintings have been preserved. The exterior of the palace was marked by the architect Edo Mihevc, who remodeled the palace by opening a gallery with numerous square openings on the ground floor, which ran along the street, forming a kind of shopping arcade with numerous shops and bars. Because of this, today it is difficult to recognize the central building axes of the palace, which are two. In the first we have a central portal with the main entrance to the staircase, and in the second a portal with a lunette, where we can see a fresco of the Holy Family. Stylistically, it can be defined as a late Baroque palace, which has an emphasized central part and side wings. Its facade represents part of the Kidričeva Street, while at the back there was a large courtyard with a garden, most of which was built over in the second half of the 20th century. The palace has a classic horizontal design, in which the characteristic residential representative floor – piano nobile – stands out. Despite its inappropriate purpose, the Totto ex Gavardo Palace has preserved its representative character in the central part with decorative wall and ceiling paintings and wall profiling. Due to static problems, the palace was partially damaged, so the kindergarten that used the palace had to move out in 1992 due to the threat. Since then, the palace has been unoccupied. (Original) Palača je nastala z združitvijo več palač in mestnih hiš v 18. stoletju, vse stavbe so bile v lasti družine Gavardo.

In the post-war period, the ground floor of the palace was converted into shops, but today it is the palace itself. Port operating company
The Port of Koper, also known as Luka Koper, is a significant influence on the city and serves both industrial and tourist purposes. It has become increasingly popular among cruising ships and tourists, with even Royal Caribbean ships docking here. While it is the largest port in Slovenia, it is modern, elegant, and efficient. Visitors can arrange visits through reservations but should be prepared for potentially long customs processes due to its size.
Top PORT!

Not support for seamen. They force the seamen to pay 15€ if you want go to the city. And when you come back, you must also pay 15 €. They prohibit to you go from your ship to gate without car. They don’t provide shuttle bus service. You can use only one special taxi. So if you decide go for a walk, you must pay 30€ in any way. And also it’s not an official information from port regulations. You can’t find it anywhere. Only agent inform by phone, and never write it in official message . Somebody decide to make business!

The Koper port is well-located and walkable. However, coming back to the ship, when you go through the Slovenian security, you will encounter the rudest people on the planet. I don't have the name of a specific security lady, but she should not be working with people. Today, 6/22/24, my family and I went through the Slovenian security, and the way she was talking to us she deserved hands on her. One day, she will find one crazier than her. Perhaps, the cruise personnel can train the Slovenian authority on how to treat people decently. If I could give 0 stars, I would because 1 star is A LOT.

Our Royal Caribbean ship docked here. The port is fine to enter and exit. There is no Uber or Lyft in this town. So if you’re traveling somewhere, don’t take the taxis waiting outside. They will be double the price. Take the elevator across the street, to the 2nd floor - it leads to the town. Then go to the taxi stand 5 mins away.

Notable street
Titov trg is a charming and historic town square located in the Old Town of Koper. It features late medieval and early Renaissance buildings, including the Praetorian Palace, Loggia Palace, and the Cathedral of the Assumption. The square is closed to traffic and showcases Venetian-influenced architecture, with highlights such as the arcaded Venetian Gothic Loggia and the stunning 15th-century Praetorian Palace.
Koper is wonderful at any time of the year, but in December it is magical, you just have to visit it, taking a walk among those wonderful lights, Christmas atmosphere, smell of cinnamon, love it.

The Taverna is a former salt warehouse, which was also called the Warehouse of St. Mark. The Taverna probably stood at the beginning of the 17th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, salt production began to decline and large salt warehouses became unnecessary. The Taverna was thus converted and used as a fish market, shops, warehouses, a guesthouse and more. The exterior of the building did not undergo any major changes. When new shops moved in, only interventions were needed on the interior. In 2004, they began a thorough renovation of the Taverna. It was given a new purpose and almost completely emptied. Today, it is a venue for Koper events and celebrations. The Column of St. Justine once stood by the sea next to the salt warehouse. It was built in honor of the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. Ob vselitvah novih trgovin so bili potrebni le posegi v notranjosti. Leta 2004 so začeli s temeljito prenovo Taverne. Dodelili so ji novo namembnost in jo skoraj popolnoma izpraznili. Danes je prizorišče za koprske prireditve in slavja. Steber Svete Justine je nekoč stal ob morju ob skladišču soli. Zgrajen je bil v čast bitke pri Lepantu, leta 1571.

The Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Nicholas in Trieste is a stunning 18th-century church with a neoclassical facade and richly decorated interior. The layout includes three liturgical spaces, with a magnificent iconostasis dividing the presbytery from the bay. The marble floor and refined stalls add to its beauty. Although it was undergoing restoration during some visits, the interior decorations are still breathtaking.
The outside of the building is simple facade but inside will amaze. There was even scaffolding due to restoration and it was still stunning. It will be a quick stop as the church is small but spectacular.

Had the divine pleasure as a Greek Orthodox Christian from Australia to visit St. Nicholas last October when my wife and I were on vacation in Italy. Located on the central Trieste waterfront in the heart of the city with sweeping views of the sea The last time I had visited this church was in 1990 so it was quite emotional for me to revisit this holy place and light a candle for the spirit of the loved ones who have left us and say a pray for all. Highly recommended for a visit by fellow Orthodox Christians and other denomination Christians or even those that may want to join the Orthodox faith.

Francine L — Google review
It has a regular layout and it is subdivided into three liturgical spaces: the presbytery with three small apses, the bay and two balconies for the gynaeceum and the choir. The magnificent iconostasis divides the presbytery reserved to the priests from the bay dedicated to the believers. The bay has a marble floor with black and white squares and has been refined with stalls along the walls. At its core, among large branched candlesticks, the icon of Saint Nicolò is placed besides the icon reminding of the current festivity, which is on the proskinitirion provided. The great canvas portraying Christ in glory surrounded by angels covers the whole horizontal ceiling and is rich in effects of perspective, featuring balustrades and glimpses of classical-oriented architecture. The painting (oil on canvas) can be ascribed to an anonymous Greek painter, mainly educated at the Ionic Academy of Panaghiotis Doxaras (1662-1729) but also touched by influences of the Venetian School. Between the windows, there are images of the Evangelists and the Apostles. On the side walls, two large paintings of Cesare dell’Acqua from Pirano (1821) portraying the Preaching of John the Baptist to the left and Christ among the Children to the right. The painting above the right door portrays Filoxenia, which is to say Abraham welcoming angels. It can be ascribed to the same artist of the ceiling canvas.

Attractive neoclassical façade with a richly decorated interior. Sadly this summer the decorative iconostasis is covered in scaffolding.

The interior of the Greek Orthodox Church is beautifully decorated. Unfortunately it was undergoing repairs at the time of our visit.

The Cerkev sv Trojice is an ancient stone church surrounded by a defensive wall that boasts of Gothic frescoes, including the renowned 'Dance of Death.' The church is a spectacle to behold, visited annually by many due to its magical and breathtaking appearance. Visitors can get adequate guidance for a meager fee of 3 euros and even purchase bottled red wine Refosk from nearby vineyards.
The church was approached through the very narrow streets of a small village. For an entrance fee of 5 Eur, you can listen to a 10-minute narration in several languages about the church, with a detailed description of the frescoes on the walls. I recommend a visit for people interested in history.

Nice church, easy to access, even with the stoller. To enter the church, you have to call the number on the entrance. Entrance fee is 5eur.

A very interesting church surrounded by a medieval wall with a fresco of the dance of death. Worth a visit and I would gladly give 5 stars if they would offer any info on the history of the church apart from the rusty sign outside that's barely readable

This remote part of Slovenia is worth driving to for the beautiful scenery. About 25 minutes from Koper is this historical church atop a hill with outstanding views. It's quiet. Didn't go inside as you need to call a number for someone to let you in. Open 9-16 weekdays and costs 3eur. However you can walk around the outside. Some parking on site. Worth a visit.

Slovenia's hidden crown jewel. The hostess always starts an audio guide, often in your language. Even in Dutch! Be sure to buy the 2 euro brochure that includes the full dance and other info.

A usually unknown jewel for slovenian visitors and that well deserves a visit. 5 € per person but families can receive a discount. Very interesting.

Great historical place to visit. Very nice views around the church. Inside the church there are very nice wall frescoes, among those there is also well known Dance of Death. Also entrance fee isn't so expensive.
